I WAS HAVING THE EXHAUST CHANGED WHEN I WAS NOTIFIED THAT ONE OF THE CROSS MEMBERS FOR THE FRAME HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. IT HAS BEEN REPAIRED, BUT I WAS INFORMED THAT EXCESSIVE RUST IS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS ON THE REAR OF THE FRAME AND WILL NEED TO BE WATCHED CLOSELY. KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE CROSS MEMBERS SUPPORT THE FUEL TANK AND IF ONE WOULD BREAK, IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD CASSETTE FUEL TANK TO FALL OFF. THE TRUCK HAS 100,500 MILES ON IT, WHICH IS NOT EXCESSIVE FOR THE YEAR. THE TRUCK SPENT MOST OF ITS LIFE IN MICHIGAN, BUT NOW RESIDES IN ILLINOIS. I HAVE READ SEVERAL FORUMS HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THE 99-2007 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES. THERE ARE SEVERAL HOLES PLACED ON THESE CROSS MEMBERS BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT ALLOW MOISTURE IN, WITH NO PLACE FOR THE MOISTURE TO GO ONCE IT IS PLACE. I AM SURE THERE IS ALSO A LACK OF PROPER PAINT APPLICATION AND EVEN POOR STEEL THAT IS LIKELY CAUSING THE ISSUE. JUST AS TOYOTA HAS DONE, CHEVY SHOULD OFFER A RECALL FOR EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE TOYOTA TUNDRA RECALL OFFERS A NEW FRAME FOR ANY TUNDRA WITH A RUST HOLE 10MM OR LARGER. WHY ISN'T THE NHTSA INVESTIGATING THIS FURTHER? THIS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN AND ALSO CONSIDERABLY LOWERS THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. GM AND CHEVY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DECISIONS WHEN DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING THESE VEHICLES, JUST AS TOYOTA TOOK ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR DECISIONS.

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT LOW MILEAGE, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRED BLEW OUT. THE TIRE WAS TAKEN TO A SHOP AND REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION THAT MAY AFFECTED THE TIRE. THE MANUFACTURER OF THE TIRE WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE WAS 42,000.

THE SPARE TIRE HOIST CABLE BROKE, AND THE SPARE TIRE DROPPED ONTO THE HIGHWAY. IT BOUNCED AT LEAST 10 FEET IN THE AIR, NARROWLY MISSING CARS DRIVING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. LUCKILY IT ROLLED TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. I HAD NEVER USED THE SPARE, NOR LOWERED THE HOIST MECHANISM. THIS TIRE WEIGHS ~75 POUNDS AND COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED A PASSING MOTORIST. *JS

I LIVE IN CONNECTICUT AND I HAVE A 2000 CHEVY SILVERADO K1500 EXT CAB 5.3L TRUCK WITH 198000+ MILES ON IT. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN GARAGED JUST ABOUT ITS WHOLE LIFE SINCE I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW. LAST WEEK MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE TRUCK TO THE STORE. WHILE COMING TO A STOP SIGN JUST DOWN THE STREET THE BRAKES FAILED. FORTUNATELY SHE WAS COMING TO A STOP AND WASN'T GOING FAST WITH NO ONE IN FRONT OF HER. SHE WALKED BACK TO THE HOUSE AND I WENT DOWN TO FIND THAT A BRAKE LINE HAD BUSTED BEHIND THE DRIVERS WHEEL ON THE FRAME RAIL BEFORE IT GOES OVER THE FRAME TO THE ABS MODULE. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED BACK TO MY HOUSE AND PUT IN THE GARAGE TO INSPECT IT. I AM AMAZED ON HOW MUCH THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE RUSTED. SOME AREAS OF THE LINE WHEN I TOUCHED IT JUST FELL APART IN MY HANDS. I HAVE BEEN HEARING THAT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE I KNOW WHO OWNS 1999-2003 CHEVY TRUCKS ARE HAVING BRAKE LINE FAILING DUE TO CHEAP STEEL RUSTED LINES. WHILE I WAS UNDER THE TRUCK I ALSO NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE CROSS MEMBERS THAT SUPPORT THE RIGHT REAR SHOCK PLUS THE GAS TANK IS SUPPORTED OFF OF IS RUSTED WITH ONLY HALF A TUBE LEFT. PLUS JUST ABOUT ALL OF MY GAS LINES HAVE SERIOUS RUST ON THEM. MY OTHER ISSUE IS THAT THE ROCKER PANELS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAB ARE RUSTED THREW TO A POINT THAT YOU CAN STICK YOUR HAND IN THEM. WHEN IS CHEVY GOING TO GET OFF THEIR BUTT AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. THE BRAKE LINES, FUEL LINES & CROSS MEMBER CORROSION ARE SAFETY ISSUES THAT SHOULD BE DEALT WITH BEFORE PEOPLE GET HURT OR WORST KILLED. *TR

STARTED TO THINK THERE NO WAY THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO THIS TRUCK. ONLY 140000 MILES THIS HAS GOT TO BE A CASE OF POOR QUALITY. NOT ONLY IS THIS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CHECKED ON BUT IT IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX. I DID SLIDE OFF THE ROAD BUT I CAME TO A SAFE STOP IN A FIELD LUCKILY MY E-BRAKE WORKED AND NOBODY ELSE WAS AROUND. COULD YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS AND TAKE CARE OF IT. THE DEALERSHIP TOOK DIGITAL PICTURES OF THE CRACKED FRAME. THE CONTACT IS ONLY TOWING 3,875 POUNDS WHICH IS UNDER THE MAXIMUM TOWING SPECIFICATIONS OF 8,000 POUNDS. GENERAL MOTORS HAS AGREED TO GIVE THE CONTACT A LOANER VEHICLE; AWAITING THEIR DECISION TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM WITHOUT CHARGE. UNTIL WE WENT IN FOR THE AIR BAG RECALL WE HAD NEVER BEEN INFORMED ABOUT ANY RECALLS. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER IS 04V129000 THE SUMMARY FOR THE COMPALINT IS AS FOLLOWS: ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE GALVANIZED STEEL TAILGATE SUPPORT CABLES THAT RETAIN THE TAILGATE IN THE FULL OPEN (HORIZONTAL) POSITION MAY CORRODE, WEAKEN, AND EVENTUALLY FRACTURE. IF BOTH CABLES FRACTURED, THE TAILGATE WOULD SUDDENLY DROP AND STRIKE THE TOP SURFACE OF THE REAR BUMPER. THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM THE CONTACT IS HAVING WITH HIS VECHILE. ROAD SALT APPEARS TO HAVE PENETRATED TO THE WIRES THAT COMPRISED THE CABLE AND CORRODED THEM TO THE FAILURE POINT. CABLE BROKE WHILE LOADING A LAWN TRACTOR <> 700 POUNDS. AT APPROXIMATELY 25K MILES, BOTH TAILGATE STRAPS BROKE; THE RUBBER CASE OVER THE CABLES ALLOWED WATER IN, AND THE CABLES RUSTED. BOTH CABLES WERE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT THAT TIME. AT APPROXIMATELY 52K MILES, ONE OF THE "NEW" CABLES BROKE; EXPECTING THAT THE OTHER ONE WOULD FAIL SOON, I BOUGHT TWO NEW CABLES. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS INJURED WHEN BOTH CABLES BROKE THE FIRST TIME. FROM NOW ON, I INTEND TO REPLACE BOTH WHEN EVEN A SINGLE CABLE BREAKS. I DON'T BELIEVE THE CABLES SHOULD BREAK SO FREQUENTLY. THE OLD BRAKE LININGS WERE REPLACED WITH NEW ONES. THE ROTORS WERE LITERALLY FALLING APART-INFERIOR METAL. DEALER STATED THIS WAS THE RESULT OF THE VEHICLE NOT BEING DRIVEN ENOUGH. THERE WAS A TERRIBLE "KLUNCKING" SOUND IN THE REAR END OR DRIVE SHAFT. THIS HAPPENED IN A DOWNSHIFT OR UPSHIFT. THE DEALER STATED IT WAS NORMAL PLAY IN THE DRIVETRAIN. ALL FOUR WHEELS HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 6000 MILES BECAUSE THEY WERE RUSTED. TAILGATE STRAP BROKE AT 17000 MILES. THE FOURTH DOOR WOULD NOT CLOSE WHEN THE WEATHER TURNED COLDER, THEY HAD ME WAIT TWO WEEKS FOR AN APPOINTMENT. WE TOOK IT IN AND THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE LATCHES AND LUBED THEM. THE PROBLEM RETURNED IN JANUARY AND THE DEALER ORDERED NEW LATCHES AND UPON RETURNING TWO WEEKS LATER, THEY WERE INSTALLED. BY THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY, THE PROBLEM WAS BACK. THIS TIME THE DEALER ADJUSTED THE STRIKER TO LESSON THE WIND NOISE. ON FEBRUARY 23, 2001, THE DEALER REPLACED THE WEATHER STRIP IN THE DOORS FOR THE WINDNOISE AND SHUTTING ISSUE. ON MARCH 6, 2001, THE DEALER ONCE AGAIN ADJUISTED THE INNER LATCH IN HOPES THE DOOR WOULD CLOSE PROPERLY AND ORDERED MORE NEW WEATHER STRIP. THERE ARE TWO OTHER VISITS WE HAVE MADE TO THE DEALER FOR WHICH WE WERE NOT GIVEN A COPY OF THE WORK ORDER. OUR LAST VISIT TO THE DEALER WAS ON JULY 24, 2001. AT THAT TIME THEY WANTED TO REPLCE THE INNER DOOR SEAL AND AND REPAIR ALL THE SCRATCHES THEY HAVE PUT IN THE PAINT. FROM NOT SHUTTING CORRECTLY, THE UPPER REAR CORNER OF THE DRIVER'S DOOR BENT OUT AND PUT A CREASE IN THE DOOR. THE DRIVER'S DOOR IS HIGHER THAN THE FOURTH DOOR AND STICKS OUT WHEN SHUT. WE HAVE HAD WIND NOISE AND WATER LEAKAGE AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THE DEALER, WITHOUT OUR PERMISSION, BENT THE UPPER CORNER BACK DOWN AND USED A PRY BAR TO BEND THE WELDED ON HINGES. OUR TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT, BUT LOKING AT YOU WOULD THINK IT HAS!
