WHILE ROUTINELY DRIVING MY 03 CHEV SILVERADO TRUCK, THE BRAKES FAILED. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY STOP AND MOVE TO A SAFE PLACE, I LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND SAW BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES WHICH HAD FAILED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. AS A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER, I HAVE EXCELLENT DRIVING SKILLS WHICH HELPED ME TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED!

BRAKE LINES, GAS LINE, TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES ALL RUSTED/CORRODED BEGINNING AT UNDER 50,000 MILES. * HAD NEAR ACCIDENTS AS THE BRAKE LINES BLEW WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND WAS DECELERATING IN AN ATTEMPT TO COME TO A STOP..PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, I CONTINUED ON (FOOT OFF THE GAS) UNTIL THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN ENOUGH ON IT'S OWN, SHIFTED INTO LOW GEAR & WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP AND GET TOWED. * SHORTLY AFTER BRAKE LINE INCIDENT, THE SAME THING WITH THE GAS LINE, RUSTED/CORRODED AND LEAKED GASOLINE WHEN IGNITION WAS ON AND PUMP WAS RUNNING... TOWED * A FEW ,MONTHS LATER, I WAS PARKING THE TRUCK AND FLUID STARTED SPEWING FROM UNDER THE TRUCK - AFTER CLOSE EXAMINATION I DETERMINED IT WAS TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE LINES HAD RUSTED/CORRODED - AGAIN,TOWED. * REAR BUMPER ROTTED OUT COMPLETELY BEFORE HITTING 35,000 MILES- I HAD IT REPLACED, NOW THE WHEELS AND SIDE QUARTER PANELS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN ARE ALSO ROTTING OUT. * CURRENTLY THE DASH LIGHTS/PANEL WILL INTERMITTENTLY BEGIN TO FLASH - THE WHOLE DASH GOES BLANK, LIGHTS OFF, THEN THEY COME BACK ON, WHILE DRIVING! **MY MECHANIC RECENTLY TOLD ME AFTER STATE INSPECTION, THAT THE FRAME IS THE NEXT THING TO GO, IT IS RUSTING OUT MORE THAN EXPECTED FOR A VEHICLE OF IT'S AGE/LOW MILEAGE. PERSONALLY, I FEEL THAT INFERIOR PRODUCTS WERE USED WHEN THE TRUCK WAS MANUFACTURED ONLY BECAUSE I HAVE ANOTHER CHEVROLET PRODUCT WITH TWICE THE MILEAGE AND 6 YEARS OLDER WITH BARELY ANY RUST/ROT/CORROSION.

FRONT BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH AND SPILLED BRAKE FLUID WHILE MOVING AT SLOW SPEED. HAD FRONT BRAKE LINES REPLACED. SIX MONTHS OR SO LATER, REAR BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH AND SPILLED BRAKE FLUID WHILE MOVING AT SLOW SPEED. HAD REAR BRAKE LINES REPLACED. ABS IS NOW CONTAMINATED AND IS CAUSING STOP TIME DELAY, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH SPEED. ALMOST CRASHED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHERE MY HEART DROPPED TO MY STOMACH. DECIDED NOT TO DRIVE TRUCK ANYMORE UNTIL I CAN REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM WITH RUST FREE COMPONENTS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO ENGAGE THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP. THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS USED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING ABOVE THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE BRAKE LINE OVER THE FUEL TANK RUPTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,000.

PEDAL IMMEDIATELY WENT SOFT. HE BARELY AVOIDED COLLISION AND HAD TO PULL OFF INTO A NEARBY CHURCH PARKING LOT. NOW WE ARE OUT THE EXPENSE OF HAVING THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. THE RUST ISSUE, WHICH HAS BEEN COMPLAINED ABOUT IN ALL OF THE OTHERS, IS THE SAME HERE THAT LED TO THIS. THOUGH IT HAS HIGH MILEAGE, THE TRUCK HAS BEEN VERY WELL TAKEN CARE OF AS IT IS A REGENCY EDITION SILVERADO.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP BY ENGAGING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE LINES CORRODED, CAUSING THE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK. AS A RESULT, THE BRAKE LINE AND THE MASTER CYLINDER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

BRAKE LINE BURST AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. AT ONLY 15 MPH I HAD SOME STOPPING POWER BY PUMPING BRAKE PEDAL AND GOT THE TRUCK STOPPED. THANKFULLY, I HAVE A VERY LONG DRIVEWAY AND WAS STILL ON MY PROPERTY. I WAS PULLING A HEAVY TRAILER AND DO NOT WANT TO IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WITH TRAFFIC AND AT A GREATER SPEED. I INSPECTED THE BRAKE LINES AND NOTICED THEY WERE ALL BADLY CORRODED. I AM HAVING ALL BRAKE LINES REPLACED TOMORROW. I SEE NO RECALL NOTICE AND HAVE SINCE READ ABOUT OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I AM 66 YEARS OLD AND HAVE HAD ONE BRAKE LINE FAILURE MANY YEARS AGO ON A 1963 PLYMOUTH WITH VERY HIGH MILEAGE. THIS TRUCK HAS JUST OVER 50 THOUSAND MILES. I WAS SHOCKED AT THE CONDITION OF THESE BRAKE LINES. WITHOUT COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE LINES I DO NOT CONSIDER THIS VEHICLE SAFE TO DRIVE. *TR

WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY DROPPED TO FLOOR AND BRAKES FAILED. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT AND ALL FOUR BRAKES FAILED. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED. TESTING THE BRAKES, I FOUND THERE WAS A LITTLE BRAKING CAPABILITY, BUT VERY LITTLE. I HAVE SINCE FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED THROUGH AND THE BRAKE FLUID SPRAYS OUT THE LINE BELOW THE DRIVER'S DOOR HINGE. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE RISK. THANK GOODNESS IT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY! MY WIFE AND I GOT INTO THE VEHICLE TO GO SOMEWHERE AND AS WE STARTED TO MOVE I TRIED TO STOP AND THE BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP THE VEHICLE. I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IN ORDER TO STOP. I RETURNED TO MY DRIVEWAY USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. I CHECKED AND FOUND THAT I HAD NO BRAKE FLUID. I GOT UNDER MY TRUCK AND FOUND THAT MY BRAKE LINES ARE CORRODED AND ONE HAD A SEVERE LEAK. I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE SIMILAR INCIDENTS WHERE THERE HAVE BEEN CRASHES. I HAVE TALKED WITH A CHEVROLET REP AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY DO NOT CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE. ALTHOUGH THEY KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM THEY DO NOT PLAN A RECALL. ON JANUARY 20, 2015, THE BRAKES ON MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO FAILED. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO MAKE A NORMAL TURN, ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AROUND THE CORNER FROM MY HOUSE, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. I WAS EXTREMELY FORTUNATE THAT NO CARS WERE COMING THE OTHER WAY & I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE TRUCK OUT OF HARMS WAY UNTIL I CAME TO A SAFE STOP. I NOTICED A TRAIL OF LIQUID ON THE GROUND & ALSO DRIPPING FROM UNDER MY TRUCK. THE LIQUID COMING FROM THE TRUCK WAS BRAKE FLUID. A LATER CHECK PROVED THE BAKE FLUID WELL WAS EMPTY. OBVIOUSLY THE BRAKE FLUID THAT WAS IN THE RESERVOIR WAS NOW ON THE GROUND CAUSING THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE. WELL IT WAS OPERABLE, IT WAS ALL GOOD TO GO. STOPPING THE VEHICLE WAS ANOTHER MATTER. THANK GOODNESS I WAS DRIVING IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE SHOP NOTED THIS WAS A COMMON DEFECT OF THE CHEVY SILVERADOS. THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ISSUE ESPECIALLY IN COLD CLIMATES WHERE SALT AND SNOW ACCUMULATES. I DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL TO SHIFT THE TRUCK FROM PARK, AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR! PUMPING THE BRAKES DID NO GOOD. I LOOKED UNDERNEATH, AND BRAKE FLUID WAS RUNNING DOWN FROM UNDER THE DRIVER'S SEAT AREA. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION, ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES COMING OUT OF THE ABS MODULES HAD SPRUNG A LEAK AT THE POINT WHERE IT BENDS OVER THE TOP OF THE FRAME RAIL. IF THIS HAD OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, AN ACCIDENT IS LIKELY, AS THERE WAS NO BRAKE, DESPITE THE DUAL MASTER CYLINDER! ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED, ESPECIALLY WHERE THE OEM FACTORY FORMED BENDS ARE. THE BRAKE LINES ARE ACTUALLY AT THE POINT OF CRUMBLING IN PLACES. TO COUNTER ANY CLAIMS ABOUT SEVERE CORROSION ENVIRONMENT CAUSING THE PROBLEM, CONTRAST THE BRAKE LINES TO THE FUEL LINES ON THIS VEHICLE WHICH HAVE NO TO VERY MINIMAL CORROSION. I ALSO OWN ANOTHER 2003 GM VEHICLE WITH FAR MORE MILES, AND IT ALSO HAS VERY LITTLE BRAKE LINE CORROSION. I HAVE OWNED BOTH THESE VEHICLES FROM NEW, AND THE SILVERADO HAS LESS MILES, AND LESS WINTER SALT EXPOSURE THAN THE OTHER VEHICLE. I HAVE ALSO OWNED OTHER VEHICLES FOR MANY MORE YEARS AND MILES THAN THIS SILVERADO, AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING LIKE THE HORRIBLE CRUMBLING OF THIS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE BRAKE LINE MATERIAL USED ON THE SILVERADO. THERE WAS NO PRIOR INDICATION OF A PROBLEM AND NO WARNING LIGHT SIGNALING AN ISSUE. SWERVED INTO THE LEFT BERM TO AVOID HITTING CARS AHEAD. THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ON THE DASH ILLUMINATED, A WARNING CHIME SOUNDED, AND THE MESSAGE CENTER FLASHED AN ALERT TO "SERVICE BRAKES SOON". I HAD ALMOST NO RESPONSE AT FROM THE BRAKES; FORTUNATELY THE STREET WAS LEVEL SO I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY COAST TO A STOP. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE TRUCK BACK INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND PARKED IT. WHEN I GOT OUT TO INVESTIGATE, I IMMEDIATELY NOTICED A SMALL POOL APPROXIMATELY A FOOT IN DIAMETER OF BRAKE FLUID ON THE DRIVEWAY SURFACE JUST BEHIND THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT TIRE, ALONG WITH A TRAIL THAT LEAD BACK TO THE STREET. BRAKE FLUID WAS DRIPPING FROM THE LINES AT THE FRAME WHERE IT MAKES THE BEND UPWARD AT THE FRONT EDGE OF THE CAB. CLOSER INSPECTION WITH A FLASHLIGHT REVEALED THAT ALL THE BRAKE LINES ARE EXCESSIVELY RUSTED AND ONE OR MORE OF THEM APPEARS TO HAVE BURST WHERE THE LINES GO OVER THE FRAME RAIL INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. ALL LINES WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED BEFORE THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE AGAIN. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED USED (60K MILES) IN FLORIDA IN 2006, MOVED TO WASHINGTON STATE (SEATTLE AREA) IN 2008, AND THEN MOVED AGAIN TO NORTHERN VIRGINIA IN LATE 2009. WHILE DRIVING DOWN RTE. 188 IN SEYMOUR, CT (STEEP DECLINE) A DEER CROSSED IN FRONT ON ME CAUSING ME TO APPLY THE BRAKES VERY FIRMLY. I STARTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES PRETTY SOFTLY AS THE LIGHT WAS SOME DISTANCE AWAY. ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES ON THE DASH STARTED GOING OFF. I REALIZED I HAVE NO BRAKES. I START TO PANIC AND THEN DECIDE I BETTER TRY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AS I DO NOT WANT TO RUN THE RED LIGHT AND GET INTO A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT. I AM FURIOUS THAT THIS $30,000+ VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY RUSTING ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. IN MY OPINION GM SOLD US A LEMON. I PLACED THE TRUCK BACK INTO PARK AND PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL NUMEROUS TIMES ATTEMPTING TO RECOVER MY VEHICLE BRAKES, TO NO AVAIL. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT I WAS PARKED FACING A DOWNWARD ANGLE WHEN I EXPERIENCED THIS TERRIBLE BRAKE FAILURE. AND HAD I NOT EMPLOYED THE PARKING BRAKE IN ADVANCE THERE SURELY WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISION RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE. AFTER MY ATTEMPTS TO RECOVER MY TRUCK BRAKES PROVED FUTILE, I DISCOVERED A LARGE PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID ON THE GROUND DIRECTLY UNDER MY DRIVER'S SIDE COMPARTMENT. IT WAS DETERMINED ALL STEEL BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED AND THE TWO (2) BRAKE LINES RUNNING FROM THE TRUCK'S MASTER CYLINDER TO THE ABS MODULE HAD A NUMBER OF RUST DETERIORATION HOLES IN THE STEEL LINES RENDERING THE TRUCK UNUSABLE AND UNSAFE. MY TRUCK HAS ONLY 36,095 MILES ON IT . I CAN NOT COMPREHEND HOW THIS "LATENT DEFECT" IN THE 2003 YEAR CHEVY SILVERADO TRUCKS BRAKE SYSTEMS COULD GO UNRECOGNIZED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND A RECALL NOT INITIATED AND CORRECTIVE ACTION NOT TAKEN. AN IMMEDIATE RECALL IS WARRANTED AND ADEQUATE REPAIR COMPENSATION TO ME IN PARTICULAR IS CERTAINLY JUSTIFIED, ALONG WITH ALL OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME "LATENT DEFECT". MID AUGUST 2012 APPROXIMATELY 5 PM AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 76 DEGREES AND ROADS WERE DRY. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 83 SOUTHBOUND NEAR HARRISBURG PA AT APPROXIMATELY 5PM I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES THE (BRAKE) PEDAL TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY LOST SAFE BRAKING DISTANCE. I ATTEMPTED TO PUMP THE BRAKES TO UTILIZE WHAT BRAKE POWER I HAD LEFT WHILE DOWN SHIFTING TO USE THE ENGINE TO ASSIST IS SLOWING THE VEHICLE DOWN. I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN APPROXIMATELY 2/10 OF A MILE. I THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. UPON INSPECTION, I FOUND ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD RUPTURED THUS RELEASING BRAKE FLUID AND CAUSING BRAKE LOSS. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES HAVE SIGNIFICANT CORROSION. A TEMPORARY REPAIR WAS MADE TO THE RUPTURED LINE HOWEVER IT HAS BEEN RECOMMENDED BY A LOCAL CHEVY DEALER THAT ALL THE LINES BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD (BY THE SERVICE MANAGER) THE CAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE CORROSION IS FROM THE TREATMENTS USED ON HIGHWAYS FOR WINTER DRIVING. WHILE SLOWING DOWN JUST PRIOR TO COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE WARNING LIGHT/SIGNAL CAME ON. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, BRAKE FLUID WAS SEEN BELOW AND TO THE FRONT OF THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOORBOARD. WHEN TRYING TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AT LOW SPEED (IDLE) TO A SAFE LOCATION, I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKES. CHEVY'S CLAIM THAT THE "OTHER HALF" OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD FUNCTION WITH INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES IS NOT TRUE IN MY CASE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRABLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN CORPUS CHRISTI TEXAS (ALLEN SAMUELS CHEVROLET, 361-884-5234). UPON DIAGNOSIS, VICTOR LANDA (SERVICE ADVISOR) INFORMED ME THAT THE BRAKE LINE FAILED DUE TO RUST/CORROSION. FURTHERMORE, HE STATED THAT THIS A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM DUE TO THE SALTY ENVIRONMENT (GULF COAST OF TEXAS) AND THAT HE HAS A MECHANIC THAT IS GETTING REALLY GOOD AT MAKING REPLACEMENT LINES. UPON INSPECTION, [XXX] INDICATED THAT ALL THE BRAKE LINES ON MY VEHICLE SHOWED EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND SUGGESTED REPLACING THEM ALL FOR SAFETY ALONG WITH THE "CONTROL VALVE". ALL THE LINES WERE CONSTRUCTED BY THE MECHANIC AT A COST OF REPAIR EXCEEDING $1800.00. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY BEEN ON THE BEACH LESS THAN 8 TIMES TOTAL IN ITS LIFE AND HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY WASHED AFTER EACH VISIT. IT APPEARS, BASED ON INTERNET RESEARCH AND DISCUSSIONS WITH STAFF AT ALLEN SAMUELS CHEVROLET, THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. SO COMMON THAT THE NHTSA HAS OPENED AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS ON THE PREMATURE BRAKE LINE FAILURE. I HOPE THAT THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED BY ISSUING A RECALL SO THAT UNDUE REPAIR COSTS ARE NOT PASSED ON TO THE CONSUMER FOR "FAULTY" BRAKE EQUIPMENT. CLOSER INSPECTION REVEALS OBVIOUS BURST BRAKE LINE BUT WITHOUT REMOVING INNER FENDER OR WIRING HARNESS I CAN NOT ACTUALLY SEE THE RUPTURE AND IT MAY BE CONCEALED BY THE CLIPS ATTACHING THE LINE TO THE FRAME. ODDLY THE LINES HAVE SOME RUST BUT NOTHING WHICH LOOKS LIKE IT IS SO SEVERE TO HAVE ALLOWED A RUPTURE. THE ATTACHING HARDWARE MAY BE ALLOWING SOME MOVEMENT IN THE LINES ALLOWING ADDITIONAL RUST TO TAKE HOLD. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK NEW IN 2003 IN OCTOBER I THINK AND ONE THING ABOUT IT THAT WAS DIFFERENT THAN THE TWO PREVIOUS NEW CHEVY TRUCKS I BOUGHT WAS THE REAR BRAKES NEVER SEEMED TO APPLY AS HARD AS THEY SHOULD AND NOTHING EVEN CLOSE AS THE 2000 TAHOE OR THE 1994 SILVERADO. THE "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT SUDDENLY POPPED ON WITH A RINGING BELL. I WAS LESS THAN TWO MILES FROM HOME, SO I CONTINUED MY DRIVE, DOWNSHIFTING TO 1ST AS I APPROACHED A STOP SIGN. AT A RED LIGHT, I SHIFTED INTO PARK TO AVOID ROLLING INTO TRAFFIC. AFTER RETURNING HOME, I NOTICED A LINE OF FLUID DRIPS ON THE DRIVEWAY. I PUT A DISH UNDER THE AREA THAT SEEMED TO BE LEAKING (UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR) AND MY HUSBAND LATER CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS BRAKE FLUID AND THAT A LINE HAD RUPTURED. TWO SEPARATE REPAIR SHOPS CONFIRMED THAT FIVE BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED OUT AND ONE HAD RUPTURED. WE PAID OVER $1000 TO REPLACE PARTS THAT WOULD NOT HAVE RUSTED OUT IF THEY HAD BEEN MADE WITH A RUST-PROOF MATERIAL RATHER THAN STEEL. IF THIS BRAKE LINE RUPTURE HAD OCCURRED ONE DAY EARLIER, THE SCENARIO COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH UGLIER: I HAD BEEN DRIVING TO THE BEACH, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WITH MY TWO YOUNG DAUGHTERS AS PASSENGERS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A STOP, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM ACTIVATED BEFORE THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE PADS WERE FINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE HOWEVER NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 106,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000.

BRAKES WENT TO FLOOR WHEN DESCENDING HILL TO HOUSE. UNABLE TO STOP MY WIFE DOWN SHIFTED TO FIRST GEAR TO TRY TO SLOW TRUCK DOWN BUT STILL COULD NOT GET IT TO SLOW DOWN. END OF ROAD IS CUL-DA-SEC (LUCK IT WAS EARLY MORNING AND KIDS WEREN'T OUT PLAYING YET) WITH A WALKING TRAIL TO WOODS AT THE END. SHE FIGURED THAT WAS BEST WAY TO SLOW IT DOWN SO AIMED TOWARDS TRAIL. AFTER ENTERING THE WOODS 75 FEET THE TRUCK FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS NOT HURT AND ALSO THE TRUCK WAS NOT DAMAGED, BUT NOW MY WIFE IS AFRAID TO USE THE TRUCK. MECHANIC TOLD ME BRAKE AND FUEL LINES ARE NO LONGER STAINLESS STEEL. WHO'S BRIGHT IDEA WAS IT AT GM TO CUT COST BY MAKING THE BRAKE AND FUEL LINES NOT BE STAINLESS STEEL. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF LINES NOT BEING STAINLESS AND SHAME ON ANY SAFETY INDUSTRY PERSONAL THAT DECIDED THIS WAS OK. I WOULD GLADLY PAY THE EXTRA $20 ON TRUCK COST TO HAVE IT STAINLESS. HERE IN THE NEW ENGLAND AREA THEY USE SALT ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER AND EVEN IF I RINSED OFF THE TRUCK EVERY DAY IT WOULD STILL CORRODE OUT THE LINES. GM GOT LUCK WITH THIS ONE THAT NO ONE WAS HURT, THEY OFFER RECALLS FOR OTHER ITEMS WHICH ARE WASTEFUL, BUT FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS THEY DON'T. I HAVE BEEN A GM OWNER FOR A LONG TIME BUT IF GM IS GOING TO TAKE RISKS WITH ME AND MY FAMILIES LIFE, THIS MAYBE THE LAST GM PRODUCT I OWN. *TR

WHILE TOWING A BOAT AND TRYING TO COME TO A STOP, BY BRAKES HAD GONE OUT (AS INDICATED WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKES TO THE FLOOR AND WARNING LIGHT CAME ON). I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE IMMEDIATELY AND DOWNSHIFTED, BUT THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH TO STOP ME AND I NARROWLY MISSED ONCOMING TRAFFIC TURNING LEFT AT A RED LIGHT. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I HAD FOUND ONE OF MY BREAK LINES WAS COMPLETELY CORRODED BY THE ABS UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR BEHIND THE FRONT LEFT WHEEL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 7 MPH AT A STATE INSPECTION STATION, THE CONTACT DROVE OVER A SKID PAD FOR THE INSPECTION OF THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DROPPED TO THE FLOORBOARD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, BUT EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTIES STOPPING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS LEAKING BECAUSE THE BRAKE LINE HAD FRACTURED DUE TO CORROSION. ALSO, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE'S REAR DUST SHIELD WAS CORRODED AND HAD DISINTEGRATED PRIOR TO THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. BACKING BOAT TRAILER ON BOAT RAMP, SUMMITT LAKE, TEKAMAH, NE. SUDDEN BRAKE FAILURE (PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR) WITH NO WARNING OR WARNING LIGHT. MANAGED TO GET TRUCK INTO DRIVE, AND PULL OUT BEFORE I WENT IN THE WATER. THE BRAKELINE UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HAD RUSTED THROUGH, AND THERE WERE NO BRAKES WORKING. HAD THE TRUCK TAKEN TO BLAIR, NE, AND REPAIRED AT PRIVATE SHOP. BEFORE REPAIR, I CONTACTED THE SERVICE MANAGER AT DILLON CHEVROLET IN BLAIR TO ASK IF COVERED, WAS INFORMED NO WARRANTY WAS AVAILABLE DESPITE LOW MILES, AND COST OF REPAIR WOULD BE APPROX $1000 TO $1500 DEPENDING ON AMOUNT OF CORROSION PRESENT. THE INDEPENDENT GARAGE REPAIRED FOR ~$800. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS NOTED ON VARIOUS INTERNET WEB SITES, AND I AM AWARE OF CURRENT INVESTIGATION DUE TO OTHER CATASTROPHIC FAILURES.
