I HAVE A 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO AND THE BRAKE SYSTEM START GOING OUT LAST WEEK. TOOK IT TO MY GMC DEALER , WHERE I PURCHASE THE VEHICLE FROM. THEY STATED THAT THE BRAKE LINE ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED AND THE ISSUE IS SO EXTENSIVE THAT THEY CANNOT DO WORK TO IT. I NEED TO FIND AN INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR SHOP. I PURCHASE A PREMIUM WARRANTY FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ARE THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS BEEN PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE TRUCK FOR THE LAST 1 1/2 YEARS. *TR

MID AUGUST 2012 APPROXIMATELY 5 PM AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 76 DEGREES AND ROADS WERE DRY. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 83 SOUTHBOUND NEAR HARRISBURG PA AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE WHILE EXITING THE HIGHWAY. WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES THE (BRAKE) PEDAL TRAVELED ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY LOST SAFE BRAKING DISTANCE. I ATTEMPTED TO PUMP THE BRAKES TO UTILIZE WHAT BRAKE POWER I HAD LEFT WHILE DOWN SHIFTING TO USE THE ENGINE TO ASSIST IS SLOWING THE VEHICLE DOWN. WHILE USING THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD, I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN APPROXIMATELY 2/10 OF A MILE. I THEN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. UPON INSPECTION, I FOUND ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD RUPTURED THUS RELEASING BRAKE FLUID AND CAUSING BRAKE LOSS. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION I FOUND ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES HAVE SIGNIFICANT CORROSION. A TEMPORARY REPAIR WAS MADE TO THE RUPTURED LINE HOWEVER IT HAS BEEN RECOMMENDED BY A LOCAL CHEVY DEALER THAT ALL THE LINES BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD (BY THE SERVICE MANAGER) THE CAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE CORROSION IS FROM THE TREATMENTS USED ON HIGHWAYS FOR WINTER DRIVING. HE ALSO TOLD ME HE IS REPLACING BRAKE LINES ON AT LEAST 3 TRUCKS A MONTH. I SPOKE TO OTHER GARAGES IN THE CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA AREA. THOSE GARAGES CONFIRMED THEY ARE SEEING AN INCREASE IN GENERAL MOTORS VEHICLE BRAKE LINE REPAIRS. *TR

AFTER NOTICING A GAS LEAK, I ASKED MY FATHER TO DRIVE MY TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. WHEN HE PUT THE TRUCK INTO REVERSE HE HAD NO BRAKES AND HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BEFORE ROLLING INTO MY MOTHER'S CAR BEHIND HIM. UPON INSPECTION BY THE DEALERSHIP, ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES AND GAS LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. UPON RESEARCH I FOUND THIS PROBLEM QUITE WIDESPREAD AND EXPENSIVE, NOT TO MENTION THE CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUES INVOLVED. I DO WANT TO KNOW THAT CHEVROLET/GM IS CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SAFETY AND IS ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM.

I WAS DRIVING OUR 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA AT SPEEDS OF NO MORE THAN 40 MPH. I BRAKED AT A STOP SIGN AND NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WENT WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND YET THE TRUCK WASN'T STOPPING. WHEN I APPLIED EVEN MORE PRESSURE (AT THIS POINT I WAS UP AGAINST THE STEERING WHEEL AND PRACTICALLY STANDING UPRIGHT!) THE "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT SUDDENLY POPPED ON WITH A RINGING BELL. I WAS LESS THAN TWO MILES FROM HOME, SO I CONTINUED MY DRIVE, DOWNSHIFTING TO 1ST AS I APPROACHED A STOP SIGN. AT A RED LIGHT, I SHIFTED INTO PARK TO AVOID ROLLING INTO TRAFFIC. AFTER RETURNING HOME, I NOTICED A LINE OF FLUID DRIPS ON THE DRIVEWAY. I PUT A DISH UNDER THE AREA THAT SEEMED TO BE LEAKING (UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR) AND MY HUSBAND LATER CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS BRAKE FLUID AND THAT A LINE HAD RUPTURED. TWO SEPARATE REPAIR SHOPS CONFIRMED THAT FIVE BRAKE LINES HAD RUSTED OUT AND ONE HAD RUPTURED. WE PAID OVER $1000 TO REPLACE PARTS THAT WOULD NOT HAVE RUSTED OUT IF THEY HAD BEEN MADE WITH A RUST-PROOF MATERIAL RATHER THAN STEEL. IF THIS BRAKE LINE RUPTURE HAD OCCURRED ONE DAY EARLIER, THE SCENARIO COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH UGLIER: I HAD BEEN DRIVING TO THE BEACH, AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, WITH MY TWO YOUNG DAUGHTERS AS PASSENGERS. ON SEPTEMBER 4, 2011, I EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN BRAKE FAILURE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP AT AN INTERSECTION. ALSO, I WAS ACCOMPANIED IN THE VEHICLE BY 10 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER. I HAD TO STEER MY VEHICLE AWAY FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC AS I WAS UNABLE TO STOP AT THE INTERSECTION DUE TO THE LACK OF EFFECTIVE BRAKE ASSISTANCE. THERE WAS NO PRIOR WARNING OR DASH ILLUMINATION TO INDICATE THAT THERE WAS A BRAKE ISSUE. THANKFULLY, A TRAGIC ACCIDENT INVOLVING INJURY OR DEATH WAS AVOIDED. ON SEPTEMBER 6, 2011, I CONTACTED CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT IN REGARDS TO THIS MATTER. I INFORMED CUSTOMER SERVICE OF THE BRAKE LINE ISSUE. AT THIS TIME I WAS ASSIGNED A CASE NUMBER (71984021797) AND WAS ADVISED TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE CONDUCTED BY A LOCAL CHEVROLET SERVICE GARAGE. ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2011, A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK ON MY TRUCK AND THE RESULTS OF THE INSPECTION WERE RELAYED TO CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT. LATER THAT DAY, I SPOKE WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I WAS INFORMED THAT THE INSPECTION REVEALED THAT ALL BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED AND CORRODED. SHE FURTHER STATED THE TRUCK WAS IN GOOD CONDITION WITH LOW MILEAGE AND THAT WOULD MAKE IT AN EXCELLENT CASE FOR REPAIR ASSISTANCE. SHE FORWARDED THIS INFORMATION TO A HIGHER DEPT. AND THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED THE FOLLOWING DAY. ON SEPTEMBER 8, 2011, I WAS CONTACTED BY CUSTOMER SERVICE . THEY INFORMED THAT CHEVROLET DETERMINED THAT THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND NO ACTION WILL BE TAKEN. SHE FURTHER STATED THAT BRAKE LINES ARE A WEAR ITEM. I REMINDED HER THAT BRAKE LINES ARE NOT A WEAR ITEM AND THEY DONT FALL WITHIN THE CATEGORY OF TIRES, ROTORS, AND BRAKE PADS. I THAN ASKED TO SPEAK WITH A SUPERVISOR SO I COULD BETTER UNDERSTAND THE BASIS OF THE DECISION TO NOT PROVIDE REPAIR ASSISTANCE. AT THIS TIME, I WAS STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD SO I DECIDED TO RELEASE THE BRAKE AND COAST OVER TO A SAFE LOCATION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF MY CHILDREN. AS THE TRUCK STAYED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I AGAIN PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDDLE TO DISCOVER BRAKE FLUID SHOOTING OUT FROM TRUCK. WHEN HE GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE FLUID HAD BEEN RELEASED ON THE GROUND. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER AT THE CONTACTS EXPENSE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPAIR COSTS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 22,000. AFTER PERUSING EXCESSIVE RUST TO UNDER-CARRIAGE OF 2003 SILVERADO, RESEARCHED OTHER COMPLAINTS AND FOUND NUMEROUS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY. THIS LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO RUST PROBLEMS. ENTIRE LEFT BRAKE LINE HAD TO BE REPLACED DUE TO RUST-THROUGH. ACTUAL RUST-THROUGH OF BRAKE LINE WAS NOT REPORTED TO GM AS AT THE TIME I SAW NO CORRELATION TO WHAT LATER BECAME A RUST THROUGH PROBLEM OF BUMPERS AND CARGO BODY. THIS WAS EXPERIENCED AFTER RUST-THROUGH WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. MY CONCERN IS WITH THE RUSTING OF BRAKE LINES AND POSSIBLE INJURY AND EVEN DEATH WHEN COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE IS EXPERIENCED. THIS VEHICLE HAS UNDER 30,000 MILES. I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER FOR ASSISTANCE AND THEY WILL ONLY PAY FOR ONE ROTOR (A GOOD WILL GESTURE) THIS IS A TERRIBLE RESPONSE, I HAVE NOW FOUND THAT I AM ONLY ONE OF MANY WITH THIS PROBLEM. LAST MARCH MY VALVE STEM BROKE AT 28 THOUSAND. AT THAT TIME, I TOLD THE MAN WORKING THAT I DON'T HAVE BRAKES,SOMETIMES. HE ASKED WHEN? I DON'T KNOW, JUST AT STOP SIGNS AND IN SAN FRANCISCO TRAFFIC. HE SAID TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT. I DID AND TOOK IT BACK LAST FRIDAY TO GET IT CHECKED. I ALSO SAW THE RECALL NOTICE THAT NHTSA HAD IN THE PAPER LAST WEEK. THEY MENTIONED A RECALL IN COSTA RICA AND IN SIX STATES ON THE CHEVY SILVERADO AND THE ANTI LOCK BRAKES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HEATHER SAID THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ANY WORK. I HAVE A TRUCK LOAD OF KIDS ALL THE TIME, YET I DON'T HAVE BRAKES ALL THE TIME. ITS HAPPENED ABOUT 20 TIMES IN THE LAST TWO YEARS. HEATHER SAID THE MEN DROVE IT FOR TWO MILES AND FOUND THE PROBLEM. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY FOUND, BUT I DON'T LIKE IT WHEN MECHANICS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WOMEN. I JUST WANT MY BRAKES FIXED.

BRAKE PEDAL FEELS VERY SPONGY. WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED HARD THE STOPPING DIDTANCE IS VERY POOR. IN FACT ON DRY PAVEMENT, THE VEHICLE ABS SYSTEM WILL NOT ENGAGE. WHEN I ADD MY BOAT TRAILER (WHITHIN THE MANUFACTURES HAULING SPEC) THE VEHICLE IS SCARY TO DRIVE, IT FEELS LIKE YOU CANNOT STOP. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY HAVE NO WAY TO MAKE THE TRUCK STOP BETTER. PLEASE HELP!!

I OWN A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO THAT HAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ACTIVATING AT LOW SPEEDS BECAUSE OF RUST AROUND THE SENSORS. IT ALSO HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE ROTOR BRAKING SURFACE RUSTING AND PITTING SO BAD IN TWO YEARS THAT THE REAR BRAKE PADS WERE ONLY MAKING 50% CONTACT WITH THE BRAKE ROTOR CAUSING A LOSS OF BRAKING PERFORMANCE. YOUR CURRENT INVESTIGATION DOES NOT INCLUDE 2003 VEHICLES AND NEEDS TO BE EXPANDED.

WHEN BRAKING AT ANY SPEED BRAKE PEDAL WOULD GO TO THE FLOOR, AND THERE WOULD BE EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK ABS DISPLAYED BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED ON INCLINES. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. THE ODOMETER FAILED AND ADDED EXTRA MILEAGE. THE TIRES STARTED SEPARATING AFTER 300 MILES. THE RADIO BECAME HOT AND SHORTED OUT. THE AIR CONDITIONER SHORTED OUT. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE NEW VEHICLE CHECKLIST WAS NOT FILLED OUT NOR REVIEWED WITH HIM. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE ENGINE KNOCKS. THE CONSUMERS FINGERS WERE BURNED BY THE RADIO AFTER IT GOT HOT. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT HE HEARD A GROWLING NOISE IN THE POWER STEERING. THE CONSUMER HEARD A BUZZING NOISE IN THE TRANSMISSION. THE CONSUMER HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE VEHICLE COMING DOWN A HILL. THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT WENT OUT AND TURNED BLACK. THE HEADLIGHT WAS REPLACED WITH THE WRONG HIGH BEAM LIGHT. THE CD PLAYER WILL NOT TAKE THE CD. THE SPEEDOMETER WILL ONLY GO TO 20 MPH AT TIMES. *TC

I OWN A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO K1500 PURCHASES IN JULY 2003. WHEN TOWING A TRAVEL TRAILER (APPROX 4,000 LBS) I HAVE NOTICED WHAT FEELS LIKE A "SPONGY" BRAKE PEDAL. RECENTLY, I DISCOVERED THAT IF STEADY, MODERATELY HEAVY PRESSURE IN MAINTAINED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, IT WILL SLOWLY GO DOWN COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR. DEALER SERVICE MANAGER HAS SIMILAR TRUCK WITH IDENTICAL SITUATION. THEY HAVE NO ANSWER. QUESTION WAS DIRECTED BY DEALER TO DISTRICT SERVICE REP WHO STATED SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT THIS IS A DESIGN SITUATION AND THERE IS NO FIX!!!! I SUSPECT GM IS AVOIDING A COSTLY RECALL. HOWEVER, THEY SHOULD KNOW THAT ONE ACCIDENT COULD WELL COST MORE THAN THE RECALL, PARTICULARLY IF THERE IS LOSS OF LIFE. HOW IS ONE EXPECTED TO REMAIN STOPPED ON A GRADE FOR ANY PERIOD OF TIME WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR?
