TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, MAKING LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS AT LOW SPEEDS, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED UNWANTED ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM ACTIVATION WITHOUT WARNING. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT DIAGNOSED THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR MOUNTING SURFACE ON THE BEARING NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000.

MY WIFE HAD DRIVEN THE SUBURBAN LIKE ALWAYS AND WITHOUT ANY ISSUES. AT THE END OF THE DAY SHE PARKED IT AND IT SAT UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING. I WALKED OUT TO IT AND FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE I SAW A LARGE PUDDLE UNDERNEATH MY DRIVERS SIDE. WHEN I TURNED ON MY TRUCK THE BRAKE LIGHT WAS ON AND WHEN I SHIFTED INTO GEAR I NOTICED THE BRAKES WERE OUT. I CONTACTED GM AND GAVE THEM THE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER (EA11001) BUT SINCE THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING IN THEIR SYSTEM THEY CANNOT COVER ANYTHING. I SEE THAT THIS ISSUE IS THE SECOND ONE OPENED AND THIS ONE HAS BEEN OPENED SINCE JAN 5, 2011. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH SHE ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE AT AN INTERSECTION AND HEARD A CRANKING NOISE BEFORE THE BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSE THAT THERE WAS RUST DAMAGE ON THE BRAKE LINES. AS A RESULT, FRONT BREAK LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THREE MONTHS LATER THE REAR BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE RUST DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 177,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 179,000. WHENEVER THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED THE ABS VIBRATED EXCESSIVELY CAUSING THE OCCUPANT TO APPLY MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 05V379000, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTI-LOCK WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE WHICH WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER REMOVED THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND THOROUGHLY CLEANED THE SENSOR MOUNTING SURFACE ON THE WHEEL BEARINGS, APPLIED RUST INHIBITOR AND GREASED THE MOUNTING SURFACE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HER THAT SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO REPAIR IT A SECOND TIME. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000. REPAIR IS DIFFICULT, COSTLY, AND GENERALLY INEFFECTIVE. VERY DANGEROUS. NOT ONLY WILL THE E-BRAKE TYPICALLY NOT HOLD THE VEHICLE FROM A STAND-STILL. IT WAS NEVER DESIGNED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE WHILE IT IS MOVING IF THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM FAILS. MOST DRIVERS EXPECT AN E-BRAKE TO DO BOTH. CHEVROLET SHOULD DEVISE A FIX AND ISSUE A RECALL.

MY 2002 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN LEFT ME AND MY THREE CHILDREN STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WHEN I LOOKED AT MY TIRE, I SAW A SMALL FIRE INSIDE THE TIRE. MY CAR WAS TOWED 55 MILES TO NEAREST CHEVROLET DEALER. I HAD MY LEFT FRONT BRAKE CALIPER, HUB, ROTOR, BRAKE HOSE, BRAKE PADS AND RESURFACED ROTORS. A NEW LEFT FRONT TIRE AND $2,700 MY CAR WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AGAIN. ALL THE TECHNICIANS THAT SAW MY CAR WERE AMAZED THAT I DIDN'T LOSE THE TIRE. THEY WERE AMAZED TO SEE IT HANGING ON BY A THREAD. I UNDERSTAND THAT GM HAS SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THEIR BRAKE CALIPERS AND HUB. I DO NOT TRUST THE RIGHT SIDE SO I AM REPLACING THAT CALIPER AS WELL. I DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE, ESPECIALLY A MOM DRIVING ON A TRIP WITH HER YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR. THIS IS A DEFAULT IN HE CAR AND ITS BRAKES AND I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS INVESTIGATED.
