WINDSHIELD WIPERS WORK THAN STOP. I WIGGLE WIRE CONNECTOR TO MOTOR THAN THEY WILL WORK FOR A SHORT PERIOD. IF I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THEY WILL STOP WORKING AND SOMETIMES START WORKING AGAIN. I FOUND OUT THAT 1994 SUBURBAN 4X4 ARE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST FOR THE CARD THAT HAS A FAULTY SOLDER. I HAVE ALSO REPLACED MY DRIVERS SIDE CALIPER 4 TIMES SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2003. I ALSO REPLACED THE BRAKE HOSE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THE CALIPERS SEEMED TO GET STUCK AND WOULD NOT RELEASE. *JB

I HAVE HAD TWO ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE: 1. WINDSHEILD WIPER INTERMITTENT FAILURE. THIS STARTED TO HAPPEN AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRED. I WAS INFORMED BY A CHEVROLET DEALER THAT THE RECALL(S) ISSUED THAT MATCH THIS BEHAVIOR EXACTLY DO NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD INCLUDE MY 1994 CHEV. SUBURBAN C-1500 VEHICLE, AS IT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THIS EXACT INTERMITTENT BEHAVIOR. BEYOND INQUIRING RECENTLY WITH MY LOCAL DEALER, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. 2. POOR ABS BRAKE PERFORMANCE. THIS SYMPTOM HAS EXISTED SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. I COMPLAINED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT NO PROBLEMS WERE FOUND AT THE TIME OF COMPLAINTS AT THE DEALERSHIP. I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYMPTOM, BUT I HAVE NOT YET INQUIRED WITH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THE ISSUE CAN BE CORRECTED. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL "NEAR MISSES" WHEN HAVING TO STOP SUDDENLY AND ALMOST HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO POOR ABS PERFORMANCE AND INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE.*AK
CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ABS BRAKES MALFUNCTIONED. HAD DIFFICULTY IN STOPPING THE VEHICLE. CONSUMER CALLED DEALER, AND WILL TAKE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR AN INSPECTION IN A WEEK. CONSUMER CHECKED THE INTERNET, AND FOUND THAT THERE HAD BEEN RECALLS ON ABS BRAKES ON THIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. *AK
BRAKING SYSTEM INTERMITTENTLY FAILS DURING PANIC STOPS OR WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES OVER BUMPS AT A SLOW SPEED. *NLM
ABS FAILURE, WET WEATHER, TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNED GREEN, TRAFFIC FLOW BEGAN THEN STOPPED FOR AMBULANCE ON CROSS STREET, BRAKES LOCKED, MY VEH. SLID FORWARD, CUT WHEELS AND RELEASED BRAKES TO MOVE INTO TURN ONLY LANE, CLIPPED CORNER BUMPER OF VEHICLE AHEAD, I AND MY TWO CHILDREN (5 & 8 YRS) IN BACK SEAT WEARING SEATBELTS, FORTUNATELY NO ONE INJURED, BRAKE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES, THIS WAS THE FIRST COLLISION, MFR. DEFECT, DEALER SHOULD REPAIR.

I AM EXPERIENCING TROUBLE WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES. TODAY I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP AT A YELLOW LIGHT AND THE BRAKES STOP ABOUT HALF WAY, MAKE A STRANGE NOISE AND I FAIL TO STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME MANY TIMES. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS FRIGHTENS ME EVERY TIME IT OCCURS. I AM SCARED OF REAR ENDING SOMEONE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT WILL OCCUR, WET OR DRY WEATHER MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. IF I AM ATTEMPTING TO STOP ON GRAVEL THE SAME THING HAPPENS, THE CAR JUST SLIDES OUT INTO THE ROAD. BRAKESWORKED ON SEVERAL TIMES BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE RECALL NOTICE WAS ONLY COSMETIC AND DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I EXPLAINED EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG. I HAVE READ MANY REVIEWS ON THE INTERNET AND PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. ONE WOMAN SAID HER BRAKES LOCK UP AND GROAN ALSO. ANOTHER ,MAN REAR ENDED SOMEONE. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THESE ABS SYTSTEMS HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED, DURING A PANIC STOP THE SYSTEM FAILS, PEDAL DROPS TO THE FLOOR AND PULSATES, AND LEAVES YOU WITH NO BRAKING. HAD ONE ACCIDENT AND SEVERAL NEAR MISSES. IN A VEHICLE THIS SIZE AND WEIGHT THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE RECALLED BEFORE MORE FATALITIES ACCUR. *AK

THESE 3 CASES OF AN ABS FAILURE OCCURRED ON DAMP ROADS. TWO CASES INVOLVED THE RIGHT FRONT TIRES BEING OVER LEAVES ON THE ROAD WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. ALL THE CASES INVOLVED TRYING TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN. NORMAL PRESSURE(NOT A PANIC STOP) WAS APPLIED TOBRAKES, AND ALL 3 CASES WERE AT A SPEED OF 5MPH OR LESS. WHEN THE ABS SYSTEM KICKED IN, THE CAR BASICALLY WOULD NOT STOP WITHIN ANY REASONABLE DISTANCE. WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS ABS SYSTEM(KELSEY-HAYES) EVER SINCE WE PURCHASED VEHICLE IN 1994. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK!!!! IF THE ABS EVER KICKS IN, YOU ARE IN TROUBLE. WE HAVE HAD ONLY 1 ACCIDENT SINCE 1994(CAUSED BY THE ABS), BUT HAVE HAD NUMEROUS NEAR-MISSES. I HAVE EVEN LOOKED INTO DISCONNECTING THE ABS, BUT THERE IS SIOME INTERLOCKING OF THE ABS TO THE TRANSMISSION OR OTHER SYSTEMS THAT PREVENT YOU FROM DOING THAT. I HAVE TALKED TO THE DEALERS, MANUFATURER, AND THE NTHSA. THE DEALERS AND THE MANUFACTURERS ARE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT WOULD INVOLVE REPLACING THE WHOLE KELSEY-HAYES SYSTEM NOT JUST A MODIFICATION.*AK

THE TRUCK HAS POOR BRAKING ABILITY, WHICH MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO STOP WHEN NEEDED. ONE ACCIDENT HAS RESULTED AS DESCRIBED, IN 3/1999. MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS AND SERVICE ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN DONE WITH NO RESULT. MULTIPLE COMPONENTS HAVE BEEN CHANGED AT MY EXPENSE, WITH NO CHANGE. THE DEALER (JOE HOLLAND IN CHARLESTON, WV) STATES THE BRAKES ARE FUNCTIONING AS DESIGNED. THE TRUCK IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP IN SITUATIONS WHERE A QUICK STOP IS NEEDED. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN CHRONIC SINCE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED. IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN. MANY CLOSE CALLS HAVE HAPPENED. POOR BRAKE PERFORMANCE.*AK

SEAT BELT RETRACTION SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK ON DRIVER SEAT, AND OCCASIONALLY FAILS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE PART THAT FAILS IS THE RETURN OF THE SHOULDER BELT. LEAVING THE SHOULDER BELT LOOSE AND OF LITTLE VALUE. ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE, THE SHOULDER HARNESS SOMETIMES FAILS TO TIGHTEN UP BUT THEN DURING THE RIDE IT WILL MAKE A ZIPPING SOUND AND RETRACT AND TIGHTEN TO A PROPER FIT. AS FOR THE ABS, THEY KICK IN AT TIMES WHEN NOT NEEDED, AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO TELL, BUT SEEMS AS IF THE BRAKES DO NOT GRAB AS THEY MIGHT. WITH RESPECT TO THE ACCIDENT NOTED ABOVE, I WAS ON A FREEWAY ACCESS ROAD GOING ABOUT 45MPH WHEN TRAFFIC UNEXPECTEDLY CAME TO A HALT, AND I, ALONG WITH MOST OF THE OTHER DRIVERS, HAD TO JUMP ON THE BRAKES HARD. I WAS BRAKING WELL AND STOPPING SHORT OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME, BUT WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE INCREASED TO THE POINT OF ENGAGING THE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM, THE BRAKES ACTUALLY RELEASED CAUSING ME TO LUNGE FORWARD INTO THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. ALTHOUGH MANY CARS WERE SCRAMBLING TO STOP, MINE WAS THE ONLY ACCIDENT. I AM AN EXPERIENCED DRIVER AND I CONSIDER MYSELF A GOOD AND SAFE DRIVER. I DID NOT RELEASE THE BRAKES--I KNOW HOW ANTI-LOCKS WORK AND I KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. MY OTHER CAR HAS ANTI-LOCK BRAKES, SO I ALSO KNOW WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES THAT WORK WELL. I RAISED HELL AT THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THEIR HEAD BRAKE GURU TEST THE BRAKES. THEY CLAIMED THEY WERE FINE AND WORKING PROPERLY. THEY ARE WRONG. I RECENTLY READ THAT THE NTSB HAS AN OPEN LONG-TERM INVESTIGATION INTO THESE BRAKES, SO I THOUGHT I WOULD PUT IN MY TWO CENTS TO HELP YOU. I BOUGHT A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED. I HAVE HAD SIMILAR INSTANCES IN THE PAST, WITHOUT AN INCIDENT OCCURING. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE INSUFFICIENT BRAKE POWER TO STOP THE VEHICLE ADEQUATELY. WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED IN AN EMERGENCY CONDITION, THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATES, BUT THE STOPPING DISTANCE IS VERY LONG. THIS ABS REACTS VERY DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER I HAVE EXPERIENCED. THE STOPPING POWER IS ACTUALLY VERY DIMINISHED WITH THE ABS ACTIVATED THAN WHEN IT IS NOT ACTIVATED. ONCE THE ABS COMES INTO PLAY, THE VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT SPEEDS UP. I REALIZE THAT THE ABS IS SUPPOSED TO KEEP THE WHEELS FROM LOCKING UP AND THAT ONE SHOULD HOLD A CONSTANT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL RATHER THAN PUMPING THE BRAKES. HOWEVER, IN DRY CONDITIONS, I CAN STOP THE VEHICLE QUICKER AND IN A SHORTER DISTANCE IF I DO NOT ALLOW THE TO ABS ACTIVATE. OF COURSE ONE DOES NOT HAVE THAT CHOICE IN A PANIC STOP SITUATION. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO RELY ON THE SYSTEMS ENGINEERED INTO THE VEHICLE. I RECENTLY READ THE TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON THE 2000 SUBURBAN AND I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT GM DID NOT PROVIDE THE SAME 4 WHEEL DISC BRAKE SYSTEM INTRODUCED IN THE '99 PICK UP MODELS. THE ACCIDENT I RECENTLY EXPERIENCED COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED HAD THE BRAKING SYSTEM OPERATED AS IT SHOULD HAVE.

I HAVE HAD PROBLEMATIC ANTI-SKID SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE, AND HAVE HAD DOZENS OF NEAR ACCIDENTS AND ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN FORCED TO VEER INTO SHOULDERS AND DITCHES TO PREVENT DISASTER. WE ARE AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND WANT TO GET RID OF IT. THE ABS BRAKES SYSTEM ON THE 1994 SUBURBAN WAS UNRELIABLE SINCE THE FIRST MONTH AFTER ORIGINAL PURCHASE. A TYPICAL SCENARIO IS COMING TO A STOP AT A STOP SIGN OR STOPLIGHT. THE BRAKES OCCASSIONALLY START PULSING, ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO TRAVEL AN EXTRA DISTANCE BEFORE STOPPING. HERE IS AN EXCERP OF THE LETTER I GAVE MY DEALERSHIP REGARDING ABS POTENTIAL PROBLEMS ON 2 OCT 1995. DEALERSHIP SAID BRAKES WERE FINE. INSTEAD OF THE NORMAL STOPPING, IT FELT LIKE THE ABS "KICKED IN" AND I COULD FEEL THE HEAR AND FEEL THE CHARACTERISTIC PEDAL VIBRATION. WORST OF ALL, MOST OF THE BRAKING FORCE WAS GONE. THE ABS SHOULD NOT HAVE KICKED IN SINCE THIS WAS NOT A PANIC STOP OR A WHEEL LOCK UP SITUATION. I KEPT THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED AND WITHIN ONE OR TWO SECONDS THE ABS TURNED OFF AND NORMAL BRAKING RESUMED.. I KNOW WHAT NORMAL ABS FUNCTIONING FEELS LIKE SINCE I HAVE TESTED THEM UNDER A CONTROLLED PANIC STOP SITUATION. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS FAILURE HAS HAPPENED TO ME UNDER A NORMAL BRAKING SITUATION. BOTH INCIDENTS WERE ALMOST IDENTICAL. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES PER HOUR OR LESS AND HAD THE NEED TO STOP QUICKLY DUE TO OTHER VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK MY SUBURBAN TO GREY CHEVROLET TO HAVE THEM CHECK OUT THE BRAKES, AND THEY SAID ALL THAT ALL THEY COULD FIND WAS THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS OVERFULL, AND BROUGHT THE LEVEL DOWN TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE. AND HAS STATED FACTORY REP. WILL CONTACT US THIS WEEK TO DRIVE VEHICLE FOR EXTENDED PERIOD. CURRENTLY WAITING TO HEAR FROM FACTORY REP., BUT DEALER DOES NOT EXPECT HIM TO FIND ANY PROBLEM. IT IS OUR OPINION THAT VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO OPERATE DUE TO THE RANDOMNESS OF APPLYING BRAKES AND HAVING VEHICLE GO INTO "COAST" MODE. DUE TO NUMBER OF TIMES THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RETURNED TO DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM AND THE FACT THAT IT FINALLY RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH INJURIES, WE FEEL THAT GMC SHOULD TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILITY. FIRST, NECESSARY REPAIRS SHOULD BE MADE TO MAKE THE VEHICLE SAFE. SECOND, GMC HAS A FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPENSATE FOR DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE MALFUNCTION OF THE FACTORY EQUIPMENT. THREE CARS IN FRONT STOPPED SUDDENLY, I APPLIED BRAKES WITH FULL PRESURE FROM MY FOOT (I DID NOT RELEASE PRESURE AT ANY TIME), MY SUBURBAN DID NOT SLOW DOWN AND ENDED UP IN A DITCH WITH EXTENCIVE FRONT END DAMAGE. THE ROADWAY WAS WET AND THE SPEED WAS 35 MPH. DRIVER WAS ONLY OCCUPANT AND WAS WEARING A SEATBELT, MINOR NECK INJURY.

DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY SUGGESTED TO REPLACE THE FOLLOWING PARTS IN ORDER AS A PROCESS OF ELIMINATION. THE FRONT BRAKE LINES REPLACED, NO CHANGE. FRONT CALIPERS REPLACED, NO CHANGE. REAR BRAKE KIT AND PROPORTIONING VALVE ASSEMBLY CHANGED, THE UNSAFE SWERVE PROBLEM WAS ELIMINATED. TOTAL COST $ 1000.00
