I bought the car in August of last year and drove it for about 3 days before it started giving me problems. First incident I was driving my children home from the hairdresser and the car completely went out us on the highway, after repeated attempts for a half hour or so I was able to start it and drive it back home very slowly..this happened twice I went to get it diagnosed and codes came up for crank shaft sensor and o2 sensor, before I could even get that fixed more problems came up, the steering wheel began to become stiff and almost impossible to turn, while picking my son up from school I was trying to pull away from the curb in the drop off spot and almost hit another car and a child because the steering wheel stiffened up on me!!! I was told I would need an entire steering rack!!! ...also the key has gotten stuck in the ignition and wouldn't start and I had to have it towed to a mechanic for that as well. Driving up hill one day I lost power that made it seem like it was stuck in low, then we lost reverse altogether as well as the ability to climb hills. I got the transmission repaired, barely made it home before it started doing the exact same thing, no reverse and won't go up hills, so I had to get it towed back to the shop to fix it once again, now I find out that the computer went bad as well and was causing the car to perform in neutral. This car has given me nothing but problems since I bought it! It is very dangerous to be on the road! I don't understand how they're even still in circulation!! This is by far the worst experience I've ever had with a vehicle! Upon doing research online I seen that there were HUNDREDS of people with these cars experiencing the same problems. Something has to be done!! I had the car almost a year and only got about a week's worth of use!!
A year a go the steering at low speed would act like the power steering just stop working, very hard to turn. but not all the time, but now it more often. when a kid ran out between two parked cars I went to turn and hit the brakes the steering went out. Luckily he stop in time, but after that I needed it repaired. Went to GM web site and was amazed of all the people with this, called chevy dealer about repairs and was told its my problem and it would be $ 2100.00 to replace a faulty power steering pump, how is this not a safety problem. Try turning in a parking space and the wheel locks up its hard not to hit the car beside you. WITH NO WARNING
VEHICLE IS HARD TO TURN AT LOW SPEEDS. (POWER STEERING) HIGHER SPEEDS IT STEERS NORMALLY. THEY APPARENTLY KNOW ABOUT THE ISSUE.
WAS DRIVING FINE AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WITH NO WARNING CAR WOULD NOT GO FASTER THAN 15 MPH. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON THEN TRACTION CONTROL WENT OFF. ACROSS THE DASH IT SAID "SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL, SERVICE STABILITRACK AND REDUCED ENGINE POWER" THE CAR STARTED SHIFTING BETWEEN 2 DIFFERENT GEARS MAKING IT EXTREMELY SCARY TO TRY DRIVING TO A SAFE SPOT WITH 3 YOUNG KIDS.

MY WIFE AND I OWN A 09 CHEVY TRAVERSE AND HAVE HAD FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS. WHEN WE FIRST BOUGHT IT IT DROVE LIKE BRAND NEW BUT OVER THE PERIOD OF A YEAR OR SO WE STARTED TO FEEL A SIDE TO SIDE SWAYING (SUCH AS ROCKING IN A BOAT) WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH. SINCE WE'VE GOT 4 KIDS AND MY WIFE USES IT AS A DAY TO DAY VEHICLE I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM TELL ME IT WAS STRUTS (WHICH I HAD REPLACED) AND AFTER BEING REPLACED IT STILL HAD THE SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT. IT HAS GOTTEN TO THE POINT I DON'T ALLOW HER TO DRIVE HER NOR THE KIDS BECAUSE OF THE DANGERS. I'VE HAD THE RACK N STEERING, FRONT UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS THE REAR UPPER CONTROL ARMS, STABILIZER BAR BUSHINGS ALONG WITH NUMEROUS OTHER BUSHINGS AND ALL 4 BRAND NEW TIRES. THE DEALERSHIP NOR OTHER INDEPENDENT SHOP KNOWS WHAT ELSE TO REPLACE.

I HAVE BEEN BATTLING MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALL 2018 AND NOW 2019. NOT TO MENTION THE STABILIZTRAK AND HARD TO TURN STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE BEEN GETTING A MISFIRE IN ALL MY COILS. THIS ISSUE HAS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STUTTER, DRINK HIGH VOLUMES OF GAS AND ALMOST SENT ME BROKE. I HAVE CHANGED EVERY COIL, EVERY PLUG, CHANGED THE STABILIZER, TENTIONER, BEARINGS, SWAYBAR LINKS AND MUCH MORE. I AM COMPLETELY DONE WITH CHEVY. THEY KNOW THIS MAKE AND MIDEL IS HORRIBLE AND WE AS CUSTOMERS NEED TO DO A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. THIS VEHICLE SOUNDS LIKE A TIN CAN WHEN IT STARTS. IT RATTLES AND STUTTERS WHILE DRIVING AND IT SHAKES WHEN STATIONARY.

I WAS DRIVING WITH MY KIDS GOING ABOUT 30MPH AND SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AROUND A CURVE WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR. THANK THE LORD NO ONE WAS HURT AND NEITHER WAS THE VEHICLE. I TRY TO TAKE OFF FROM A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AND IT'LL EITHER TAKE OFF SUPER FAST AND ALMOST HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME, OR TAKE OFF SLOW WITH NO POWER AND ALMOST GET REAR ENDED. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED 6 MONTHS AGO AND THE LAST 3 MONTHS HAVE BEEN VERY FRUSTRATING WITH ISSUES OF THIS VEHICLE. I'VE ALREADY PUT $300 INTO IT AND NOW IT'S SAYING TO CHANGE THE CAT CONVERTER. I CALLED THE #1 LOCAL SHOP TO GET A QUOTE AND HE ACTUALLY SAID HIS NUMBER ONE SUPPLIER HAS STOPPED ISSUING THIS PART TO CHEVY TRAVERSE BECAUSE OF ALL THE RECALLS! SO WHAT DO I DO NOW????? I AM A MEDICAL COURIER AND THIS TRAVERSE IS MY SOURCE OF INCOME. I'VE ALWAYS LOVED CHEVYS AND DON'T BUY ANY OTHER BRAND, BUT C'MON. I DON'T HAVE $3000 TO FIX ELECTRICAL ISSUES!! THE CONTACT CALLED GERRY LANE BUICK GMC (6615 FLORIDA BLVD, BATON ROUGE, LA 70806, (225) 341-5413). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED, BUT THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. NOW, THE DEALER FINALLY ADMITS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG - NEEDS POWER STEERING PUMP AND RACK & PINION. BUT IT NOW HAS 94,000 MILES, SO THEY WON'T REPAIR IT.
TRAVERSE STOPPED AT A CITY INTERSECTION AND FAILED TO MOVE OR START AFTER THAT. TIMING CHAIN BROKE AT 158,000 CAUSING DAMAGE TO CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. FAILURE OF POWER STEERING WAS AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR MONTHS THAT CAUSED WHEELS TO LOCK UP DURING TURNS AND THEN SUDDENLY RELEASE CAUSING MUCH OVER CORRECTION BECAUSE OF HAVING TO PULL SO HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN IT WOULD GO OUT.

WE HAVE REPAIRED/REPLACED ABOUT $6900: IN 2017 EVAP PURGE VALVE, IN 2017 UPPER COOLANT HOSE, 2016 WATER PUMP GASKET, TIMING CHAIN, 2014 CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND GASKETS, 2014 WATER PUMP AND FRONT MOTOR MOUNT, IN 2009 REVERSE CLUTCH PLATE. NOW THE STABILITY TRAC AND TRACTION LIGHTS BOTH CAME ON STATING TO SERVICE THE BRAKE SYSTEM WHEN YOU ARE IN MOTION AND COME TO A STOP. PLUS TODAY, THE AC DOES NOT COME NOW. ONE VEHICLE WITH ONE OWNER SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS MANY PROBLEMS. CHEVY HAS GOT TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS 2009 MODEL. CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE.

AFTER THE DEALER'S REPAIRS, THE VEHICLE WAS RODE ROUGHLY AND THE ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED TWO DAYS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER WHO INDICATED THAT FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WAS REQUIRED. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN AT THE DEALER FOR LONGER THAN TWO WEEKS WITH NO RESOLUTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND REFUSED TO PROVIDE A REMEDY FOR THE SEVERAL EXTENDED WARRANTY CAMPAIGNS, OF WHICH SOME WERE NOT COMPLETED, BUT THE DEALER SPECIFIED ON THE INVOICE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND WAS UNABLE TO BE DRIVEN. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET I CAME TO A STOP. AS I BEGAN TO GO I TRIED TO TURN RIGHT AND I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEEL IT WAS SO HARD. REMINDED ME OF MY FIRST CAR I HAD WHEN I HAD A LEAK WITH MY STEERING FLUID. SO AT THAT POINT I TRY TO BRAKE AND MY BRAKES FAILED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED I BEGAN TO ROLL BACKWARDS AND THE FIRST THING I THOUGHT OF WAS TO PUSH DOWN AS HARD AS I COULD AND SLAMMED IT INTO PARK. WHILE ALL THIS WAS GOING ON NOT ONE SINGLE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON OR BRAKE LIGHT NOTHING. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING. I TURNED THE CAR OFF THEN BACK ON AND IT WAS AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED. LUCKILY IT WAS ON A VERY QUITE AND NON-BUSY STREET AND MY KIDS WEREN'T WITH ME.
ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS WITHIN THE PAST YEAR, THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT IN MY 2009 CHEVY TRAVERSE WHILE I AM DRIVING. ON TWO OCCASIONS, IT WAS RAINING AND MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT AS I WAS TURNING - BOTH INSTANCES ON A CITY STREET. THE THIRD INSTANCE WAS ON A CITY STREET (IN A NEIGHBORHOOD) AND THE POWER STEERING AGAIN WENT OUT AS I WAS GOING AROUND A TURN. THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER ON THE ROAD BUT IT WAS NOT RAINING AT THE TIME. IN ALL THREE INSTANCES, THE VEHICLES WAS IN MOTION, TURNING, AND ON A CITY STREET. IT IS UNKNOWN TO ME WHAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS, BUT QUITE SCARY WHEN THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. THE LAST TWO INCIDENTS WERE CLOSE TOGETHER AND WITHIN THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS (DURING JULY 2017).

THIS ISSUE IS KNOWN TO THE AUTO-MAKER AND THEY ONLY WANT TO REPLACE POWER STEERING PUMP AND FLUID. THE POWER STEERING GEAR IS LEAKING AND GM SHOULD RECALL THIS UNSAFE PART. THE STEERING FUNCTION OF AN AUTOMOBILE IS CRITICAL AS HUMAN LIVES ARE AT THE MERCY OF THIS COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE TO OPERATE AS DESIGNED.

GOOD AFTERNOON. I HAVE A 2009 CHEVY TRAVERSE LS. I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY POWER STEERING AND RECEIVED THE SPECIAL COVERAGE NOTICE NUMBER 14329 TO HAVE THE REPAIRS DONE. ACCORDING TO NOTICE, THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FLUSHED, THE STEERING PUMP REPLACED AND A NEW STEERING GEAR INSTALLED. I RECENTLY WENT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN LOWELL AND CAME ACROSS SOME ISSUES WITH THE STEERING. THERE WAS FLUID LEAKING FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND GEAR. IT HASN'T BEEN A YEAR AND IF THESE WERE REPLACED LAST JULY THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE OCCURRING AGAIN. HOW DO I GO ABOUT HAVING THIS PROBLEM RESOLVED? THANK YOU

HAVE TO STOP AND REVERSE TO STRAIGHTEN OUT. BEEN VERY CLOSE TO HITTING VEHICLES BECAUSE OF IT. FROM WHAT I AM RESEARCHING, I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL TO FIX IT. I GUESS THE INDUSTRY DOESN'T SEE IT AS BIG ISSUE SINCE THEY AREN'T THE ONES DRIVING THESE CARS AND PUTTING THEIR OWN LIVES, FAMILY'S LIVES AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD AT RISK. IT'S EASY FOR THEM TO SAY "FIX IT ON YOUR OWN" OR "JUST BUY ANOTHER CAR". BUT FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T AND DEPEND ON THEIR VEHICLE DAY IN AND DAY OUT, IT'S A BIG PROBLEM. A PERIODIC FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING HAD OCCURRED FROM WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. SOMETIMES 2 TO 3 TIMES A MONTH BUT SOMETIMES NOT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. DEALER "UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM. BRING IT IN WHEN IT IS DOING IT". ONLY LASTED THROUGH 1 TO 2 TURNS AND THEN IT WAS FINE. IT HAS DONE THIS SENSE NEW. A MONTH AGO IT STARTED DOING THIS ALL THE TIME. 8 OUT OF 10 TURNS YOU WOULD LOOSE STEERING. MY WIFE RAN OFF INTO THE GUTTER SEVERAL TIMES. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL TRUSTED REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SAME PROBLEM AND G.M HAS NOT ADDRESSED IT. REPAIR COST $900.00 . I LOOKED ON-LINE AND IT WAS TRUE. THERE IS EVEN A CLASS ACTION SUIT FILED DUE TO THIS ISSUE. (MAINLY AT LOW SPEED TURNS BUT NOT ALWAYS).

PRICE QUOTED TO FIX EVERYTHING WAS $2500. I ASKED FOR PRICE RELIEF GIVEN THE HISTORY OF THE POWER STEERING PROBLEMS, I HAD RAISED THE ISSUE WHILE UNDER WARRANTY, AND THE SPECIAL COVERAGE. DEALER AND GM REFUSE TO OFFER ANY REIMBURSEMENT. NOT EVEN FOR THE PUMP WHICH IS COVERED UNDER SPECIAL COVERAGE 14329. I AM NOW OUT $2500. THIS STEERING SYSTEM WAS A LEMON FROM THE GET GO. STEERING IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECALLED FRO ALL VEHICLES IN THE 2009-11 RANGE FOR TRAVERSE/ACADIA/ENCLAVE. IT IS NOT ONLY IRRESPONSIBLE, BUT GROSS NEGLIGENCE NOT TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM AND PASS THE PROBLEM TO THE CUSTOMER.

I HAVE HAD THIS OCCUR WHEN ATTEMPTING TO PULL IN OR OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, TURN IN A PARKING GARAGE, TURN IN A STORE PARKING LOT, MAKING A TURN AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, ETC. I HAVE MENTIONED THIS ISSUE TO THE DEALER BUT SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING. I HAD THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO BUT IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP WAS MAKING OTHERS REPAIRS AND NOTED THAT RACK AND PINION NEEDED REPLACEMENT. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THIS ISSUE. I NOTICED THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE STEERING. WHY IS THIS PROBLEM NOT A RECALL? THE RACK AND PINION STEERING REPLACEMENT COST IS $2100, WHICH I NEED TO PAY. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE RACK AND PINION STEERING IS NOT PART OF THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT, WHEN IT IS THE CAUSE OF THE PART REPLACED AS A RESULT OF THE SPECIAL COVERAGE ADJUSTMENT. I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT THIS IS NOT A RECALL. WHEN THE POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING, IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. IF THERE HAS NOT BEEN AN ACCIDENT OR DEATH AS A RESULT OF THIS PROBLEM, THERE SOON WLILL BE, IN THE PAST YEAR I HAVEE SPENT $6,000 ON REPAIRS FOR THIS CAR, WHICH HAS 82,000 MILES. I HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKE LINE FOR $1500, $2000 FOR REPLACEMENT OF 3 IGNITION COILS AND 3 SPARK PLUGS AND A GASKET. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE A SPARK PLUG. NOW, I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO SPEND $2100 TO REPLACE THE RACK AND PINION STEERING. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, I AM TRADING IN THIS CAR BEFORE ANOTHER VERY EXPENSIVE PROBLEM DEVELOPS. THE LABOR COST FOR REPAIRS IS VERY EXPENSIVE BECAUSE THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED TO REACH THE SECTION THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I WAS TOLD THAT THESE PROBLEMS HAPPEN AS CARS GET OLDER, BUT THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS THE TRAVERSE HAS VERSUS THE NUMBER OF PROBLEMS CARS OF SIMILR MILEAGR HAS SEEMS TO BE LOPSIDED. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN HER ANTI-LOCK BREAK LIGHT AND STABILITRAK LIGHT GO OFF WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ON A MAJOR SURFACE STREET (50MPH). TAKE IT IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, THEY FIND A SENSOR IN THE BRAKE CYLINDER IS BAD, AND THE CYLINDER IS GUSHING BRAKE FLUID. $800+ TO FIX. PLUS OUR POWER STEERING IS GOING BAD. THERE IS AN INTERNAL LEAK IN SOME BOOTS THAT ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY. $1200 TO FIX. IT'S LIKE THEY HAD A BUNCH OF PARTS LYING AROUND, AND THEY SLAPPED THEM TOGETHER TO BUILD A VEHICLE, EVEN THOUGH NONE OF THE PARTS WORK TOGETHER. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NEVER HAVE WASTED THE MONEY TO PROP UP A HORRIBLY INEFFICIENT COMPANY.

THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THE TIMING CHAIN AND PUMP BUT NOT THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 50,000 MILES ON IT. CHEVY KNOWS THAT THE STEERING HAS BEEN DEFECTED BUT WOULD NOT COVER THE GEAR ASSEMBLY SO IT COST ME $934.19 TO FIX. CHEVY SHOULD COVER THE COST FOR EVERYTHING!!

I COULDN'T EVEN GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT BECAUSE I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEEL IT WAS VERY HARD BOTH RIGHT AND LEFT. I GOT SCARED BECAUSE I AM PREGNANT AND I WANTED TO GET BACK HOME SAFELY. I MANAGE TO GET OUT BUT ON OUR WAY HOME EVERY TIME I STOPPED AND HAD TO MAKE A TURN IT GOT REALLY HARD AND HAD TO PUT MY EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON BECAUSE I HAD TO MAKE SLOWER AND WIDE TURNS AND SOMETIMES BACK UP AND TRY AGAIN TO TURN. THE LETTER STATES THAT GM WOULD COVER THIS MALFUNCTION WITHOUT CHARGE. WHEN MY CAR STARTED HAVING THE IDENTICAL SYMPTOMS THAT ARE LISTED IN THE LETTER, WE CALLED GM AND TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. PER THE DEALERSHIP AND GM ALTHOUGH THE SYMPTOMS ARE IDENTICAL THE ORIGIN OF THE PROBLEM IS DIFFERENT; THEREFORE, THEY REFUSED TO COVER THE $1,200 REPAIR. IT IS UNCLEAR WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS AND WE HAVE APPROACH GM AND THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES CONSIDERING THE REPAIR. I DO STILL HAVE THE LETTER.

I HAVE HAD DEALER REPLACE PARTS, BUT PROBLEMS RETURN. CHEVY OFFERED SOME OWNERS A REPAIR FOR VEHICLES UNDER 150000 MILES OR 10 YEARS, BUT NOW I HAVE GONE PAST THAT THEY REFUSE TO COVER REPAIR. THIS LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL IS UNSAFE AND A MORE PERMANENT REMEDY SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF ON THIS MATERIAL DEFECT FROM GM.

YESTERDAY, I WAS IN FOR ANOTHER OIL CHANGE AND AGAIN I ASKED MY MECHANIC TO TEST DRIVE IT, BUT THIS TIME HE DID HEAR THE CLUNKING SOUND AND ULTIMATELY FOUND THAT THE RACK & PINION STEERING UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BOTH PROFESSIONALLY AND ON COMPUTER "ON-LINE" WEB SITES, THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF EARLY FAILURES OF THE RACK & PINION STEERING, ON THE GMC ACADIA, BUICK ENCLAVE AND CHEVY TRAVERSE, SUV TYPE VEHICLES. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL VEHICLES OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS AND NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE RACK & PINION STEERING UNIT ON A VEHICLE THAT WAS LESS THAN TEN YEARS OLD (ONLY SIX, IN THIS INSTANCE) AND HAD SUCH LOW MILEAGE (RECENTLY PASSED 60,000 MILES). OBVIOUSLY, THERE IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN OR IN THE PRODUCTION OF THIS STEERING MECHANISM. THERE ARE TOO MANY PREMATURE FAILURES ON THESE SERIES OF VEHICLES. GM SHOULD OWN UP TO THEIR MISTAKES, BUT AS WITH THEIR IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEMS, THEY WOULD RATHER IGNORE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL GM VEHICLES AND HAVE MOSTLY BEEN SATISFIED WITH THEIR PRODUCTS. IF I HAVE TO SPEND ALMOST $2000 TO FIX THEIR MISTAKE, THIS WILL BE THE LAST NEW (OR USED) GM CAR I PURCHASE. THE ORIGINAL STEERING GEAR WAS REPLACED AT 46,000 MILES IN 2011 AND MY VEHICLE REQUIRES A NEW UNIT APPROXIMATELY 43,000 MILES LATER. FAILURE TO REPLACE THE COMPONANT WILL RESULT IN STEERING DIFFICULTY THAT CAN LEAD TO A CRASH. TO PUT THIS IN PERSPECTIVE, I AM REPLACING THE STEERING GEAR AT THE SAME FREQUENCY ONE WOULD NORMALLY BUY NEW TIRES FOR VEHICLE. THERE ARE SEVERAL INDICATIONS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH GENERAL MOTORS' LAMDA PLATFORM. VIA A 2012 SERVICE BULLETIN, GM MODIFIED THE STEERING GEAR PART NUMBER AND MADE CHANGES TO THE REPLACEMENT PROCESS TO PREVENT STEERING GEAR SEAL FAILURES. SECONDLY, A SERVICE MANAGER AT AN INDEPENDANT CHEVY DEALERSHIP CONFIRMED THAT HE HAS SEEN A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN STEERING GEAR FAILURES AT HIS FACILILTY. LASTLY, THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF DOCUMENTED COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA SITE AND CHEVY INTERNET FORUMS DESCRIBING THIS EXACT PROBLEM. DESPITE THE EVIDENCE ABOVE, GM WILL NOT REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR AND COVER THE COST 100%. WE HAD THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED (6 MONTHS AGO) AND THE POWER STEERING FLUID UPGRADED WITH LIMITED SUCCESS. THE TRAVERSE FEELS LIKE IT HAS NO POWER STEERING AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO TURN. WE HAVE HAD THE TRAVERSE CHECKED AT THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS TIMES AND FINALLY PAID A LOT OF $$$ TO HAVE THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED. IT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT BY TURNING THE VEHICLE. YOUR ONLY OPTIONS ARE TO STOP AND "MAN HANDLE" THE TRAVERSE INTO POSITION. AN ELDERLY PERSON OR A SMALLER PERSON WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AT ALL. I AM TAKING THE TRAVERSE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS IS AN ON-GOING ISSUE FOR THE PAST 3-4 YEARS. THERE ARE A LOT OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. GM HAS RE-DESIGNED THE NEWER TRAVERSE/ENCORE/ACADIA STEERING SYSTEMS, SO THEY KNOW A PROBLEM EXISTS. ONE DAY SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED FROM THIS STEERING PROBLEM AND EVERYONE WILL WONDER WHY A RECALL WASN'T ISSUED. SOME TYPE OF ACTION NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE WITH THIS PROBLEM. TOWARDS THE END OF 2013 MY WIFE AND I STARTED NOTICING THE STEERING BEING REALLY DIFFICULT AND LOCKING UP ON SOME OCCASIONS PULLING INTO PARKING SPACES AND PARALLEL PARKING. WE EXPERIENCED SOME NEAR MISSES WHERE THE STEERING LOCKED AND FELT LIKE WE WERE GOING TO COLLIDE WITH THE VEHICLE IN THE NEXT PARKING SPACE. WE TOOK OUR CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP IN JUNE 2014 TO HAVE THE AIR BAG RECALL DONE AND A STATE INSPECTION. WE ALSO TOLD THE DEALER THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS CONSISTENTLY STAYING LOW AND THE STEERING ALMOST LOCKS UP AT TIMES. THE DEALER SAID THE STEERING GEAR (OR RACK AND PINION) WAS BAD. THE DEALER WOULD NOT PASS THE INSPECTION. STATE INSPECTIONS ARE PERFORMED TO ENSURE SAFE VEHICLE CONDITIONS. IF A GM DEALER IS NOT WILLING TO PERFORM A STATE INSPECTION THEY ARE ADMITTING THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE DEALER PERFORMED THE AIR BAG FIX, AND REPLACED THE WATER PUMP (FROM THE COOLANT LEVEL COMPLAINT, PRIOR TSB). THEY SAID THE STEERING GEAR FIX WOULD HAVE TO BE SCHEDULED THE FOLLOWING WEEK. AFTER TWO DAYS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON (C1100 AND P00008). WE SCHEDULED THE APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE STEERING GEAR REPLACED BECAUSE WE WERE UNSURE IF THE STEERING WOULD LOCK UP ON A NORMAL TURN WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALER SAID THE C1100 WAS A LOOSE CABLE AT THE CONTROL BOARD AND THE P00008 WAS A BAD TIMING CHAIN (REPLACED UNDER A PRIOR TSB). THE STEERING GEAR WAS REPLACED AND THE COST WAS $1,552. AFTER READING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS OF CHEVY TRAVERSE VEHICLES THIS IS A SYSTEMIC ISSUE DUE TO A POOR DESIGN STEERING GEAR. 2009 CHEVY TRAVERSE LOST STEERING CONTROL ON THE FREEWAY ALMOST MAKING THE VEHICLE UNCONTROLLABLE AS EXITING THE OFF RAMP. HAD CARE BEEN DRIVEN BY MY WIFE, SHE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE STRENGTH TO GET THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL AND LIKELY WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION ON THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME MALFUNCTION. THE SUV JUST BARELY TURNED 5 YEARS OLD AND HAS ONLY BEEN USED IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS COMPONENT DEFECT THAT WILL ULTIMATELY COST LIVES, IF NOT ALREADY. ASSUMING THE PROBLEM WAS A LACK OF STEERING FLUID, I WENT TO A LES SCHWAB TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND FILLED, BUT THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND THE MECHANIC BELIEVES THE PROBLEM TO BE THE POWER STEERING SENSOR?? THE CAR IS THERE NOW SO I DON'T KNOW THE RESULTS YET. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AND WHEN CHANGING LANES THE STEERING STIFFENED AND RESISTED ALMOST CAUSING ME TO HIT THE MEDIAN. READING THE OTHER POSTS, I AM GUESSING HE KNEW RIGHT AWAY WHAT THE NOISE WAS FROM WITHOUT REALLY HAVING TO INVESTIGATE. AFTER THEIR "INSPECTION", THE GM SERVICE REP GAVE ME A CALL AND INDICATED THAT THE STEERING RACK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING FLUID. AND THIS LEAK WOULD OVER TIME CAUSE INTERNAL PARTS TO OVERHEAT AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE A LACK IN STEERING CAPABILITIES. AFTER SAYING YES TO THE REPAIRS/REPLACEMENT, I STARTED THINKING THAT THIS MIGHT BE SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY. AS WAS THE EXPERIENCE WITH OTHER POSTERS, THE GM SERVICE REP INDICATED GM IS CURRENTLY NOT CONSIDERING THIS A WARRANTY REPAIR OR RECALL REPAIR. AS TAXPAYERS, DON'T WE STILL OWN A PART OF GM? OR MAYBE THEY WERE ABLE TO PAY US BACK USING THE COSTLY REPAIRS DOLLARS WE HAVE BEEN PAYING OUT FOR REPAIRS THAT I WOULD SAY DEFINITELY FALL UNDER THE RECALL CATEGORY? THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS AN "INTERNAL STEERING GEAR FAILURE (BINDING). THE POWER STEERING GEAR WAS REPLACED AND THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM BLED. THE PROBLEM SEEMED BETTER. THE SEIZING OCCURRED MUCH LESS. HOWEVER, IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS WE NOTICED A RAPID DECLINE. NOW THE PROBLEM HAS SURFACED WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND TRYING TO MAKE A TURN (LEFT OR RIGHT) ONTO ANOTHER ROAD/DRIVEWAY/ETC. THE WHEEL SEIZES SO MUCH THAT MY HUSBAND IS ALMOST INCAPABLE OF TURNING THE WHEEL. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALER ON 5/22/13 WHEN THE MILEAGE WAS 61,287. THIS TIME THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS "STEERING GEAR LEAKING". THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED BACK IN OCTOBER 2010 (WHEN IT WAS COVERED), THEY WOULD DO US A FAVOR AND COVER IT AT A PRO-RATED AMOUNT. THE REPAIR (REPLACING THE POWER STEERING GEAR FOR A SECOND TIME AND BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM) ONLY COST US $456 OUT OF POCKET. TWO DAYS LATER THE PROBLEM RESURFACED, AND EVEN WORSE THAN BEFORE. I WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE, OUT OF FEAR THAT I AM NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO TURN THE WHEEL IF THE PROBLEM OCCURS. AFTER MY APPT, TOOK MY CAR TO PEP BOYS FOR THEM TO CHECK THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEVELS. THE EMPLOYEE SHOWED ME THAT THE LEVELS WERE FINE & THAT I SHOULD CONTACT MY DEALERSHIP. I DROVE HOME BUT I HAD A VERY HARD TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN I WAS TRAVELING AT SPEEDS LOWER THAN 25 MPH. I DIDN'T ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL MONDAY MORNING WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM. I TOLD THEM WHAT IT WAS DOING & ASKED THAT THEY LOOK AT IT. THEY CALLED ME AT WORK AND SAID THAT I NEEDED A NEW POWER STEERING PUMP AND A RACK & PINION STEERING GEAR PLUS AN ALIGNMENT. ALL TOTAL I WOULD BE SHELLING OUT $1100 FOR AN ISSUE THAT I SHOULDN'T HAVE WITH A 3-YR-OLD CAR WITH ONLY 41K MILES ON IT!! I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS TO FILE A FORMAL COMPLAINT BECAUSE NONE OF THIS WAS UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY ON THE CAR. I ALSO WANTED TO FILE A COMPLAINT BECAUSE I NOTICED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AFTER I RESEARCHED IT ON THE INTERNET. UPON CHECKING, POWER STEERING PUMP RESERVOIR, IT WAS FOUND TO BE DRY. UPON FILLING PUMP, THERE WAS NO CHANGE TO THE PROBLEM. TAKEN TO DEALER, DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A PUMP BEARING FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH PRIOR, 75,000 MILE SERVICE PERFORMED BY DEALER, POWER STEERING FLUID CHECKED BY DEALER, FOUND TO BE FULL AT THAT TIME. POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED, SYSTEM FLUSHED, NO LEAKS FOUND. DEALER ADVISED OF AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH POWER STEERING PUMP FAILURE TO THIS MAKE AND MODEL, BUT NO RECALL BY GM. REPAIR COST BETWEEN $750, FOR PUMP AND FLUSH, AND $1200 WITH OTHER SYSTEM PROBLEMS. DUE TO DISABILITIES, UNABLE TO STEER VEHICLE, HAD TO TURN DRIVING OVER TO ANOTHER PERSON IN THE VEHICLE. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY RETURNED IT STATING THEY FOUND NO ERROR CODES AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. AFTER ANOTHER MONTH OF THE SAME THING HAPPENING ALMOST DAILY ON EVERY COMMUTE WE TOOK THE VEHICLE IN AGAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE "ISSUE" AND SAID THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM WAS THE MOTOR MOUNTS WHICH THEY REPLACED. THIS MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE AND SURE ENOUGH THE VEHICLE STILL HAS THE SAME ISSUE TO THIS VERY DAY. 2ND ISSUE IS THE STEERING GOING COMPLETELY OUT AS YOU MAKE TURNS GOING AT SLOWER SPEEDS SUCH AS MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN OR TURNING IN TO A PARKING SPACE. AS I STARTED MAKING A TURN IN TO A PARKING SPACE I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR NEXT TO THE EMPTY SPACE I WAS TRYING TO GO INTO BECAUSE IT FELT LIKE THE "POWER STEERING" WENT OUT AND COULD NOT TURN THE WHEEL AT ALL. WE HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND POWER STEERING FLUID AND PUMP ARE WORKING "FINE" ACCORDING TO MECHANICS. TURNING LEFT AGAINST TRAFFIC STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IN PLACE FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN RELEASED QUICKLY CAUSING A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION OF TURNING HARD WITH NOTHING AND THEN ALMOST U-TURNING WITH TOO MUCH TURNING STRENGTH. THERE IS NO WARNING OF STEERING STOPPAGE. IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND DEALER SUGGESTED CHANGING FLUID AS IT WAS OVER 100K MILES. TOOK TO INDEPENDENT SHOP AND WAS TOLD I NEED A RACK AND PINION. R & P WAS REPLACED AND PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. OEM R & P REPLACED AND PROBLEM STILL THERE. THERE IS A STEERING SOLENOID THAT WAS REPLACED BECAUSE IT WAS FULL OF DIRTY STEERING FLUID. THAT DID NOT REPAIR IT EITHER. THERE IS A PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP THAT FAILED INTERMITTENTLY AND THE WHOLE PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IT APPEARS THE TRAVERSE IS HAVING A LOT OF "STEERING ISSUES". THIS TRAVERSE HAS A LOT OF HIGHWAY MILES AND THE PROBLEM TOOK A WHILE TO DEVELOP. I HAVE BEEN TALKING TO CHEVROLET ABOUT THIS AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE A "PROBLEM". I SPENT $1200 HAVING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. WHEN THE STEERING FIRST REACTED THIS WAY, I FELT IN DANGER WITH THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC, AND THE STEERING WENT VIOLENT WHEN IT RELEASED CAUSING ANOTHER DANGEROUS SITUATION OF TURNING TOO FAR INTO MORE TRAFFIC. AS I LOOK AT STEERING PROBLEMS WITH THIS MODEL THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS AND IF MILEAGE PILES UP A DANGEROUS CONDITION WILL OCCUR AND POSSIBLE WRECKS. *TR

THE INTERMITTENT NOISE CONTINUED, SO I HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED ON 2/18/11 WITH MILEAGE OF 36,379. THE DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE NOISE. THE NOISE CONTINUED GETTING WORSE; BECAME LOUDER AND CONSTANT. I HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED ON 8/24/11 WITH MILEAGE OF 44,248. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE STEERING GEAR WAS FAILING AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, I HAD TO PAY $1212.80. IT'S VERY DISHEARTENING TO HAVE A REPAIR OF THIS MAGNITUDE ON A 2 YEAR OLD VEHICLE WITH LOW MILEAGE. I PURCHASED THIS TRAVERSE BRAND NEW TO AVOID THE COSTLY REPAIRS OF OLDER VEHICLES. APPARENTLY, I MADE A BAD DECISION. THIS VEHICLE HAS ALREADY HAD 3 SAFETY RECALLS AND THE STEERING GEAR SHOULD BE MADE THE 4TH.
