Components related to timing chain failed, and vehicle is currently available with plans to sell to a salvage yard by 10/25/24. My 9 year old and I were at risk of collision when the vehicle failed. I was driving approximately 70-75 mph when we started to lose power. At 65 mph, I managed to cross 2 lanes of highway traffic and stopped on the shoulder. I turned off my vehicle and waited several minutes, hoping it would help reset or cool off a component or something. I had to try a couple of times before it started, and I attempted to drive as safely as I could, made it to 60 mph before it stopped running completely. I had to pull hard on the steering wheel to get to the shoulder again, only this time, the shoulder was pinched off in front of us and around a small blind spot behind us. I had my daughter move to the side closer to the cement barrier while waiting for a tow truck. She became very nervous about how close some of the other vehicles got. Afterwards, the error codes indicated several components pointing to a timing chain problem. I had the timing chain repaired around April or May of 2023 by a certified mechanic. I watched the oil life percentage and oil temperature gauge consistently. Everything indicated as normal, but I had difficulty pulling out the dipstick to check the oil level. Since it was hard to get a good reading, I tried to add some oil and recheck. The oil cap was nearly impossible to open, so I decided to wait for an oil tech to do it. Around 40-50% oil life, I had planned to have the oil changed. In spite of my efforts to maintain proper oil quality, the oil cap had to be opened with a wrench. Smoke rose out and dried out oil residue lined the inner walls. It was about a quart low. I don’t drive hard on it and it had only been around 3,000 miles between oil changes. It had been one year since the timing chain was replaced. Error codes remain and the vehicle runs rough if it stays on long enough after much effort to start it.

THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLITON ON THIS VEHICLE SB-10056456-3388 IT HAS TO DO WITH THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND SOME RACK AND PINON STEERING PARTS. IT IS HARD TO TURN WHEN YOU ARE FIRST STARTING OUT GETS EASIER AS YOU ARE DRIVING THOUGH BUT IS STILL A MAJOR CONCERN AND PROBLEM AS IT COULD HAPPEN TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AT SOME POINT WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS PROBLEM GET A RECALL ON IT

I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY STEERING WHEN I DRIVE AT A SLOW SPEED. WHEN I GO TO TURN THE WHEEL YOU HAVE TO USE A LOT OF FORCE TO TURN, IF NOT YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE GAS TO GET THE STEERING TO WORK. I HATE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR. I HAVE ALMOST WREAKED IT A FEW TIMES. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON. WHEN IT STARTED HAPPENING LAST MONTH I GOT MY POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED AND THEN A WEEK AFTER I GOT IT PUT IN, IT'S NOT WORKING PROPERLY AGAIN. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I HOPE THIS ISSUE GETS FIXED. I AM GOING TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP ONE MORE TIME IF IT DOES IT AGAIN.

SO FAR I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT ISSUES WITH MY SUV, BOUGHT A 2009 FOR 6,000 AND HAD TO PT 7,200 IN IT TO GET IT RUNNING RIGHT. I TRADED IT IN AT THE DEALERSHIP IT WAS BEING DIAGNOSED AT THANKFULLY. NOW I HAVE A 2011 AND STARTING TO HAVE MANY ISSUES UNFORTUNATELY. FIRST IT STARTED 3700 MILES AFTER I GOT MY 2011 BY LEAVING ME WITH NO POWER STEERING WHILE TRYING TO MAKE A TURN AND ALMOST WRECKED 3 TIMES GOING TO THE HOSPITAL. I WAS ABLE TO PUT POWER STEERING FLUID IN AND GOT MY POWER STEERING BACK BUT IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID IF I CAME IN AT 3500 MILES THEY WOULD HAVE REPLACED THE PUMP AND WHOLE RACK UNDER WARRENTY, BUT THEY DIDNT. SO I GOTTA TOP IT OFF EVERY FEW MONTHS, NO BIG DEAL. SUSPENSION HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, ROUGH IDLE, TUNED UP 3 TIMES IN 42,373 MILES. A/C ONLY BLOWS COLD ON DRIVER SIDE NOW, IT MAKES A DIFFERENT NOISE EVERY DAY AND THE DEALERSHIP SAYS I NEED TO HAVE THE ENGINE DROPPED AND TIMING CHAIN REPLACED. I CANT DROP 2400 BUCKS ON SOMETHING THAT DOESNT FIX THE PROBLEM! WAY TOO MANY NEGATIVE OUTCOMES THAT I'VE READ ON THE TIMING CHAIN ISSUE. PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED HAD BETTER LUCK THAN A REBUILD. THIS IS ABSURD BECAUSE IT'S A GREAT FAMILY VEHICLE BUT WITH THESE ISSUES I REALLY DONT WANT TO BUY AMERICAN MADE CARS ANYMORE.

AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE IT APPEARS THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF TRAVERSE OWNERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED SIMILAR PROBLEMS.

I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2017 WITH ONE OWNER HAVING HAD IT. HERE IT IS NOW 2 YEARS LATER AND I HAVE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH MY VEHICLE. SOME OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD BUT IT STILL ISN'T PART OF A RECALL. THE PAST YEAR I HAVE ALREADY SPENT OVER $1000 TO FIX IT. ITEMS ALREADY REPLACED INCLUDE SEVERAL SENSORS, WHEEL BEARING, POWER STEERIG PUMP AND A BATTERY. WHAT STILL NEEDS REPLACING: RACK AND PINYON, SHOCKS AND STRUTS, AND I HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM. CURRENTLY, MY WINDOWS GO DOWN BUT WON'T GO UP BECAUSE THERE IS AN INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND MY RADIO CUTS IN AND OUT. I AM STILL PAYING FOR THE CAR AND NO ONE IS HELPING. OTHER USERS HAVE REPORTED SOME OF THE SAME THING. IF I GO TO MY MECHANIC HE TELLS ME THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS. ITS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR A VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY AND I WASN'T WARNED THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS THIS KIND OF HISTORY AND GM DON'T RECOGNIZE THIS IS A PROBLEM!

IT WAS A RAINY DAY AND HEADING DOWN A LOCAL STREET AT ABOUT 40 MPH AND THE STEERING LOCKED UP WITHOUT WARNING FOR A PERIOD OF 5 SECONDS. I'M 190 LB MALE, AND I COULDN'T BUDGE THE WHEEL HEADING FOR A TREE. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID THE COLLISION BUT I CAN GUARANTEE THAT IF MY WIFE WAS DRIVING, SHOULD WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL. IT HAPPENED TO ME TWO MORE TIMES THAT DAY BUT FOR SMALLER INTERVALS OF TIME. LUCKILY MY KIDS WERE NOT IN THE CAR BUT I AM NOW FEAR THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN WITHOUT WARNING. I WON'T LET MY WIFE DRIVE IT, AND I HAVE TO KEEP BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL READY TO USE ALL MY STRENGTH. THIS CARE CAN NOT BE CASUALLY DRIVEN. THIS HAS SERIOUS LIFE SAFETY CONCERNS.

I STARTED MY SUV AND PUT IT IN REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. UPON TRYING TO TURN, NOTICED MY STEERING WHEEL WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. TRIED BRAKING SO I WOULDN'T ROLL INTO THE STREET WITH MY CHILDREN. BRAKES WERE EXTREMELY RESISTANT AND HARD TO PRESS DOWN. I THEN PUT IT INTO DRIVE TO TRY TO GET OUT OF THE STREET AND MY GAS PEDAL WAS NOT WORKING. I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE FORWARD, UNABLE TO STEER, AND BARELY ABLE TO BRAKE. TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. TRIED AGAIN 2 MINUTES LATER, SAME PROBLEM PERSISTED. TURNED OFF VEHICLE AND EXITED WHILE CAR WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD STREET. 15 MINUTES LATER THE ISSUES SEEMED TO NO LONGER BE A PROBLEM AND I WAS ABLE TO MOVE MY VEHICLE BACK TO THE DRIVEWAY.

I ADHERED TO BULLETIN AND TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER. THEY CONFIRMED SB APPLIED TO MY VEHICLE. LATER RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE STEERING GEAR WAS ALSO AT ISSUE BUT NOT COVERED BY BULLETIN TO THE TUNE OF~ $1200.00 FOR "NECESSARY" REPLACEMENT.. I TRIED TO GET LOCAL DEALER SERVICE MANAGER AND AGENTS FOR GM CARES TO EXPLAIN HOW EITHER ORIGINAL PART WAS NOT POORLY DESIGNED OR MANUFACTURED OR THE FLUID WAS NOT ADEQUATE FOR THE STEERING ASSEMBLY TO HAVE NOT CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL IN DISCUSSIONS WITH THEM. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING GM IS AVOIDING RESPONSIBILITY FOR. WHILE NOT HAPPY ABOUT BEING OUT $1200 FOR ASSOCIATED REPAIR ON A GM SERVICE BULLETIN, I AM MORE CONCERNED THAT THE STEERING ASSEMBLY OF THE VEHICLE IS FAULTY AND PLACES MY GRANDCHILDREN AT RISK. ONLY ON THE LAST DAY BEFORE DROPPING OFF AT DEALER WAS THERE ANY ISSUE WITH DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY OF THE STEERING. I REQUESTED THE STEERING GEAR THEY REMOVED AND HAVE IT IN MY POSSESSION. I HAVE AN EMAILED SUMMARY STATEMENT FROM GM CARES ON MY COMPLAINT AND A COPY OF THE INVOICE ON THE REPAIR.

I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM DINNER WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED REVVING ON IT'S OWN AND THE CAR BEGAN JERKING. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE ENGINE KILLED. I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTED THAT THE BATTERY WAS SUPPLING ENOUGH POWER AND THE TEMPERATURE GAGE WAS NORMAL. AT THIS TIME, THE LIGHTS STARTED TO FLICKER, THE RPMS WERE GOING UP AND DOWN FAIRLY QUICKLY AND THE WINDOWS AND LOCKS WERE CLICKING. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE HOME (5 MILES), BUT THE PROBLEMS PERSISTED THE ENTIRE DRIVE. THE SECOND I WOULD LET ME FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL, THE ENGINE WOULD KILL. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND HE SAID WHEN HE HOOKED IT UP TO THE MACHINE TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, THERE WAS SO MUCH WRONG HE COULDN'T ACTUALLY TELL WHAT WAS CAUSING WHAT. THE COMPUTER AND ENGINE BOTH WERE RECOMMENDED TO BE REPLACED. I LET HIM KNOW AS WELL IT HAD BECOME MORE DIFFICULT IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS TO TURN THE WHEEL WHEN GOING AT A SLOW SPEED AND VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PARK. HE STATED IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR. THE STEERING, THE COMPUTER AND THE ENGINE HE HAS SEEN MULTIPLE CUSTOMERS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH.

I OWN A 2011 CHEVY TRAVERSE WITH JUST OVER 80,000 MILES. I WAS DRIVING ALONG THE STREET AND STOPPED TO MAKE A LEFT HAND AGAINST TRAFFIC, AS I MOVED MY POWER STEERING LOCKED. I MANAGED TO COMPLETE THE TURN WITHOUT THE POWER STEERING. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP HAD FAILED AND THAT THERE WAS ALSO A LEAK IN THE STEERING RACK. THEY ADVISED ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER AS IT WAS A KNOWN FAULT AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED FOR FREE. I TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALER WHO SAID THAT AS THERE WAS A LEAK IT WAS NOT COVERED BY GENERAL MOTORS AS THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE STEERING PUMP BY THE DEALER. IF IT IS A KNOWN FAULT GM AND DEALERS SHOULD DO A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED.

CURRENTLY I HAVE ABOUT 27K MILES AND 6 MONTHS AGO I MENTION THAT WE HAVE SOME NOISE COMING OUT WHEN WE TURN THE STEERING, DEALER CHECKED DURING MY OIL CHANGE VISIT AND SAID ITS ALL NORMAL. UNFORTUNATELY I DID NOT HAVE THE PRESENCE OF MIND TO ASK FOR THE PARTS OR TAKE PICTURES OF THE FAILED PARTS.

I FIND IT VERY CONVENIENT THAT THESE TWO PARTS WHICH DO NOT FAIL ROUTINELY IN VEHICLES FAILED WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD BUT IT WAS NOT CAUSED BUT THE WARRANTY ISSUE. UNLESS I RECEIVE THE $2000 THIS REPAIR COSTS BACK OR IT IS PROVEN TO ME EMPIRICALLY THAT THIS WAS NOT CAUSED BY THE WARRANTY I WILL CONTINUE TO PURSUE REPAYMENT OF THE MONEY OWED TO ME. AFTER OVER A WEEK THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE "GEAR" OR "WRACK". THERE IS A SPECIAL AMENDMENT TO THE SPECIAL POLICY BUT, APPARENTLY MY CAR DIDN'T QUALIFY. NOT SURE WHY? MY CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED AND TAKEN CARE OF. THIS IS A NONE ISSUE WITH GM AND WE ARE CURRENTLY FIGHTING WITH THEM THAT THEY SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THE GEAR. CLEARLY, THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THE TRAVERSE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS A LOUD ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL WITHOUT WARNING. WHILE DRIVING TO WORK EARLY JANUARY 18,2016 MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND STABILITY CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON, NOT A MINUTE LATER MY STEERING WENT OUT AND I HIT A ROAD SIGN. I HAD TURNED OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL BEFORE LEAVING MY HOUSE AS INSTRUCTED BY MY SERVICE ADVISOR AT THE CHEVY DEALERSHIP. I BELIEVE GM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE. TOOK MY 2011 TRAVERSE TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT SAME DAY. LIGHTS STILL ON, AND BY THE TIME I GOT IT THERE THE VEHICLE WAS SHAKING TERRIBLY, THEY DIAGNOSE IT AS THROTTLE BODY CODES PO221-PO121 & PO300. THEY FIXED THAT PROBLEM, BUT TOOK NO RESPONSIBILITY GM TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS PROBLEM. I WANTED A SAFE VEHICLE FOR MYSELF AND MY FAMILY, NOW I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS SAFE EVEN WITH THE REPAIRS THAT WERE DONE.

IF YOU CHECK "CARCOMPLAINTS.COM" UNDER 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE STEERING PROBLEMS YOU WILL SEE THAT THE MAJORITY OF COMPLAINTS ARE THE SAME AS OURS. NOW AT THIS TIME DEC. 2015 WITH 68,906 MI ON THE OD, I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. DIFFICULT TO STEER AND TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, CLUNKING SENSATION/FEEL IN THE STEERING WHEEL, AND A PUMP WHINE SOUND. HARD TO TURN WHEEL FROM A STARTING POINT OR STOP. WHEN ACCELERATING STEERING WHEELS IS EASIER TO TURN. WHEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, THE STEERING IS LOOSE. THERE WAS NO PRECIPITATING FACTORS TO THE START OF THIS PROBLEM YESTERDAY, I FIRST NOTICED THE PROBLEM AFTER ATTEMPTING A LEFT TURN AT A SS ON MY WAY HOME. I COULD HARDLY MAKE THE LEFT TURN, THEN I STARTED TO HEAR THE WHINE NOISE. FLUIDS ARE ALL GOOD IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN THIS BE AGAIN? THERE MUST BE AN INTERNAL FLAW. TO HAVE THIS OCCUR TWICE NOT ONCE ON A VEHICLE LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD WITH LESS THAN 70,000 MILES ON IT IS VERY TROUBLING AT BEST.

DECEMBER 2015 DROVE THE 2011 TRAVERSE TO THE GROCERY STORE. AFTER PARKING THE COOLING FAN WAS ON AFTER ENGINE TURNED OFF. VERY LOUD FAN NOISE HAD ME CONCERNED. AFTER DRIVING HOME I NOTICE NO FAN NOISE SO I FELT IT WAS AN ISOLATED INCIDENT CONSIDERING IT IS COOL WINTER WEATHER OUTSIDE. NEXT A.M. WE WENT TO CHURCH APPROX 7 MILE TRIP AND FAN WAS RUNNING WHEN WE TURNED OFF CAR AGAIN AND SAW PUFF OF STEAM OR SMOKE COMING OUT FROM FRONT OF HOOD. REASONED IT WAS MORNING FOG? OR EVAPORATING WATER! ON THE WAY TO DO ERRANDS 2 DAYS LATER ENGINE WAS RUNNING ABOUT 260* ON GAUGE ON DASH. FAN CAME ON WHEN I PARKED AND RAN VERY LOUDLY. I WENT STRAIGHT TO DEALERSHIP WHICH IS ACROSS THE STREET AND MET CHEVY SERVICE REP. HE SAID IT WAS JUST THE CAR REACTING TO RUN THE DEFROST MODE ON THE AC SYSTEM AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. BEFORE I REACHED OUR HOME THE TEMP GAUGE WAS AT 260* OR HIGHER BECAUSE IT WAS ON THE HIGHEST POINT ON GAUGE. RETURNED THE NEXT DAY TO DEALERSHIP AS CAR HAD NOW OVERHEATED AGAIN, NO FAN COMING ON AT ALL, AND SERVICE WRITER SAID TURN IT OFF BEFORE IT DOES DAMAGE. WOW! LEFT CAR AND WAS CALLED THE NEXT A.M, WITH DIAGNOSIS AS BAD WATER PUMP COVERED BY RECALL. WORK WAS DONE AND THEN I WAS INFORMED THE RACK AMD PINION ASSEMBLY WAS LEAKING AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THE ENGINE MOUNT IS BROKEN. I AM SURE THE LEAK ON THE RACK AND PINION IS DUE TO OVERHEATING AND EXTRA PRESSURE ON THE GASKETS. NO LEAKS EVER NOTICED BEFORE THIS VISIT DURING MULTIPOINT INSPECTION PERFORMED BY DEALER ON 9/10/15. AREA OF FLUID IS FRESH ON RACK AREA. ESTIMATE AT $1745.00. I'M SURE THIS RECALL WILL BE HAPPENING SOON. I JUST RECEIVED THE NOVEMBER 2015 RECALL ON FAULTY THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR REPAIR. I CAN ONLY HOPE THE RECALL FOR THE STEERING SYSTEM LEAK AND FAILURES WILL COME SOON. . THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

WAS TOLD THAT THE "POWER STEERING BOX" WAS LEAKING AND GIVEN A PRICE QUOTE OF OVER $1800 FOR PARTS AND LABOR TO FIX. WAS ALSO TOLD THAT MULTIPLE OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE BUT GM IS DOING NOTHING. TOOK IT TO LOCAL SHOP WHO REPLACED RACK AND PINIONS, PLUS ALIGNMENT COSTING $1025. DURING RESEARCH ONLINE, HUNDREDS OF 2009-2011 TRAVERSE OWNERS ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE. AS OF NOVEMBER 15, 2015 IT BECAME HARD TO TURN WHEEL RANDOMLY AT LOW SPEEDS UNLESS APPLYING ACCELERATION. APPEARS IT MAY BE THE PUMP THAT THEY ISSUED A "CONCERN" FOR. I FEEL THE WHOLE POWER STEERING SYSTEM NEEDS REPLACED, AT GM'S EXPENSE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD FOR MYSELF, FAMILY, AND OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD. A VEHICLE ONLY 4-6YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT BE HAVING THESE ISSUES-- IT IS OBVIOUSLY FAULTY PARTS AND/OR PRODUCTION.

THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING STEERING ISSUES FOR A COUPLE YEARS - LOUD MECHANICAL NOISES AND POPPING. I HAVE TOPPED OF STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR SEVERAL TIMES AND THAT QUIETED THE NOISE, BUT THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A LEAK ON MY GARAGE FLOOR UNTIL OCTOBER 2015 (AFTER SERVICE EXPLAINED BELOW). THE POPPING BECAME A NUISANCE AGAIN AND I TOOK INTO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER TO INSPECT. THEY FOUND SEVERAL ISSUES IN THE FRONT END THAT NEED REPLACED: RACK AND PINION (LEAKING), POWER STEERING PUMP, END LINKS, BUSHINGS, TRANSMISSION MOUNT, STRUTS (LEAKING). STEERING COMPONENT FAILURE IS A POSSIBILITY IN THESE ISSUES AND CAN CAUSE LOSS OF POWER STEERING IN THE VEHICLE. LOSS OF POWER STEERING WOULD LIKELY END UP IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO INABILITY TO TURN VEHICLE AS INTENDED. GM SHOULD ISSUE A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR RACK AND PINION REPLACEMENT AND STRUT LEAKS AS THESE ARE VERY WELL KNOW SAFETY/DESIGN FLAWS. I KNOW 3 PEOPLE IN MY AREA THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE LT WAS FIRST TOLD AROUND APRIL 2014 FOLLOWING AN OIL CHANGE AT MY LOCAL GM CERTIFIED DEALER THAT THERE WAS A LEAK AROUND THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM (I CANNOT REMEMBER THE EXACT TERM USED). ANYWAY, THE SERVICE TECH SAID THAT IT WAS CLEARLY A SLOW LEAK AND NOT CAUSING ANY URGENT PROBLEMS, BUT THAT I SHOULD PAY ATTENTION TO IT SHOULD THINGS CHANGE. THE NEXT 2 OR 3 OIL CHANGES, THE SAME ISSUE WAS NOTED. DURING A ROUTINE OIL CAHNGE MAY 2105, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A SEAL LEAK TO THE ENGINE OF SOME SORT BUT IT WAS 'WARRANTIED'. SO, I AUTHORIZED THE REPAIR, OF A LEAK THAT I NEVER NOTICED/HAD ISSUE WITH. FAST FORWARD TO JULY 2015 (68,000 +/- MILES) AND MY POWER STEERING IS LEAKING PUDDLES, THE RESIVOIR REMAINS FULL, AND SUDDENLY LOSE ALL POWER STEERING CAPABILITIES. CALL SAME GM DEALER I ALWAYS USE, AS I NOTICE ON THE UNRELATED REPAIR IN MAY, THE POWER STEERING COMPONENTS WERE MESSED WITH, FLUSHED, ETC. TO ALLOW FOR PROPER REPAIR OF OTHER ISSUE. I WAS TOLD ABOUT A 'WARRANTY EXTENSTION' FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND TO BRING IT IN, IT SHOULD BE A COVERED REPAIR BASED ON THE NOTES THE SERVICE TECH COULD READ PERTAINING TO MY VEHICLE. CALL BACK TODAY (8/3) AND AM TOLD THAT WHILE THE PUMP IS COVERED, NOTHING ELSE IS (DESPITE FROM MY RESEARCH THE PUMP FAILURE IS LIKELY CAUSING THE OTHER NOTED ISSUES) AND THE REPAIR FOR THE RACK/GEAR BOX + ALIGNMENT + FLUSHING + WHATEVER ELSE HE RATTLED OFF TO ME, WOULD BE AT MY EXPENSE, WITH A QUOTE OF $2100+/- FROM EVERYTHING I HAVE READ AND RESEARCHED, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON ISSUE THAT GM REFUSES TO ADDRESS IN ORDER TO PROPERLY REPAIR AT THEIR EXPENSE VS. I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LOW GROWLING NOISE THAT SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM THE STEERING WHEEL AS I TURNED CORNERS. IN APRIL 2015, I WAS HAVING THE DEALERSHIP PERFORM THE 30,000 MILE MAINTENANCE AND ASKED THEM TO CHECK TO SEE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE NOISE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE STEERING GEAR WHICH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD CAUSE THE POWER STEERING TO FAIL TO WORK IN WHICH CASE I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO STEER AND IT WAS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR--ABOUT $850 FOR LABOR AND $700 FOR THE PART AND THEY DID HAVE THE PART IN STOCK. THE TRAVERSE HAD 31,110 MILES ON IT. BUT, WAS OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE I HAD BOUGHT IT IN SEPT. 2010. I DECIDED TO HAVE IT FIXED. THIS SHOULDN'T HAPPEN AT 31,000 MILES. IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGEROUS SITUATION IF I DIDN'T HAVE IT REPAIRED. I CALLED THE GM CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER IN THE OWNERS' MANUAL AND A CASE WAS FILED WITH THEM. A SENIOR ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT SHE WOULD CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT IT. BUT, THAT THE WARRANTY TIME HAD PASSED AND THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY DIDN'T COVER IT. THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE PART IN STOCK IMPLIES THEY SEE THESE FAILURES OFTEN. THE LABOR WAS 8.6 HOURS IMPLIES A POOR DESIGN. SHE SAID THE DEALERSHIP WOULD CALL ME. THEY DID FINALLY CALL TO REITERATE THAT IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THE SENIOR ADVISOR I SPOKE WITH AT GM SAID SHE WISHED I HAD CALLED HER BEFORE I HAD THE REPAIR MADE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANT. DID SHE MEAN THEY WOULD HAVE COVERED PART OF THE COST? DID SHE MEAN THAT I SHOULD WAIT UNTIL I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND HAD OR CAUSED AN ACCIDENT? I DON'T KNOW. MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE PURCHASED MANY GM VEHICLES SINCE 1969 AS SHE NOTED. WE BROUGHT IN THE TRAVERSE TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE STEERING ISSUE AND COMPLAINED ABOUT IT EVERY TIME WE BROUGHT THE TRAVERSE IN FOR OIL CHANGES. WE WERE TOLD TWO DIFFERENT RESPONSES, EITHER THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE ISSUE OR THAT IT WAS NORMAL AND THE SOUND WOULD HAPPEN WHEN THE WEATHER CHANGES. YEARS LATER THE PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING SEEMED TO GET WORSE. LAST MONTH, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS AND AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD, THEY ACTUALLY TOOK THE TIME TO DISCOVER THAT THERE WAS INDEED AN ISSUE WITH OUR STEERING AND IT WAS CAUSED BY A LEAK. THEY WANTED TO CHARGE $1800.00 DOLLARS TO FIX IT. I TOLD THE GENTLEMAN WE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE FOR YEARS AND NOW AFTER THE WARRANTY, YOU TOOK THE TIME TO FIND THE ISSUE. THEY CHARGED ME $85.00 TO FILL UP THE POWER STEERING FLUID. I DECLINED HAVING THE REPAIRS BEING DONE AND TOOK MY CAR OVER TO A TRUSTED MECHANIC. THE ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT ALTHOUGH I CAN AFFORD TO FIX MY VEHICLE, WHICH I DID PAY TO FIX, I FIND THAT THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE AMOUNGST MANY CONSUMERS WHO OWN ANY OF THE VEHICLES ON THE LAMBDA LINE WHICH INLCUDES GMC ACADIA, CHEVY TRAVERSE, BUICK ENCLAVE AND SATURN OUTLOOK. WHEN DRIVING MY TRAVERSE AT LOW SPEEDS AROUND 5 MPH WHILE TRYING TO PARK, MY STEERING GETS VERY TIGHT AND IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MAKE THE TURN INTO A PARKING SPOT. IN ADDITION THE VEHICLE IS MAKING A WHINING NOISE. WE CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND IT IS AT THE CORRECT LEVELS. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL REPAIR MAN AND THEY STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING PUMP WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I THEN CONTACTED MY LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THIS WAS COVERED UNDER MY MANUFACTURES WARRANTY AND HE STATED THAT IT WAS NO LONGER COVERED AND THE WARRANTY RAN OUT AT 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES WHICH EVER COME FIRST. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE, WHEN I SPOKE WITH THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS NEVER INFORMED ABOUT THE SERVICE BULLETIN RELEASED IN DECEMBER 2014. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT IT WOULD COST BETWEEN $1000-$1500 TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING PUMP. MY LOCAL REPAIR MAN HAD QUOTED ME AROUND $750. THEREFORE, I PAID HIM TO REPAIR MY VEHICLE BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY AVAILABLE FOR THE DEALER TO DO THE REPAIR AND WAS VERY CONCERNED WITH DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. WHEN I RETURNED TO PICK UP MY CAR I FOUND OUT THAT THE RACK & PINION IS LEAKING AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED ALSO! THESE ISSUES SEEM TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I BELIEVE IT POSES A BIG ISSUE ESPECIALLY IF I AM DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND MY STEERING GOES OUT. ON AUGUST 6, 2014 WE HAD OUR VEHICLE SERVICED BY THE DEALER DUE TO AN AIRBAG RECALL AND AT THE TIME THE VEHICLE HAD 38,000 MILES. TODAY WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE THIRD RECALL THIS BEING THE POWER STEERING PUMP. WE WERE INFORMED THAT THIS WAS COVERED BY GM BUT WE ALSO HAD A LEAK IN OUR RACK AND PINION AND IT WOULD COST $1200 TO REPAIR. WE INTEND TO FIGHT THIS SINCE IT APPEARS IT MAY BE LINKED TO THE STEERING RECALL. WE ALSO HAVE NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT HAS CUT A GROOVE INTO THE PLASTIC SEATBELT COVER NEAR THE SHOULDER HARNESS. ON FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2014, MY 2011 CHEVY TRAVERSE STALLED/SHUTDOWN WHILE DRIVING. I PULLED OUT OF A LOCAL GAS STATION AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY THE CAR BEGAN TO STALL/SHUTDOWN. I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER (FORTUNATELY THERE WAS ONE). I TURNED THE AC UNIT AND RADIO OFF. I STARTED THE CAR WITHOUT ANY NOISE. I DROVE APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE, TURNED THE AC BACK ON AND THE CAR STALLED/SHUTDOWN ONCE AGAIN, THIS TIME AS THE CAR WAS GOING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH. TO SAY THE LEAST, I WAS EXTREMELY DISTRAUGHT AS THE CAR LOST POWER AND STEERING. FORTUNATELY, (FOR MY FAMILY AND CHEVY), THERE WERE NO CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS RELATED TO THE AC UNIT AND WANTS TO CHARGE ME ALMOST $2,000 TO FIX! THE AC UNIT WAS "FIXED" BACK IN JUNE 2013 WHILE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY. IT IS NO LONGER COVERED BY WARRANTY. MY ISSUE IS THAT THE CAR STALLED/SHUT DOWN. A CAR SHUTTING DOWN AT ANY SPEED IS A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. TRAVELING AT 35 MPH CREATES AN EVEN MORE DANGEROUS SITUATION. IF THE AC UNIT CAN STALL A VEHICLE THEN THIS HAS TO BE AN INHERENT DESIGN/PRODUCTION ISSUE. THERE IS NO ACCEPTABLE WAY THAT AN AC UNIT CAN FAIL AND THUS CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO SHUT DOWN PUTTING PEOPLE'S LIVES IN DANGER. THERE IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN THE STEERING AND HOPE THAT GM EXTENDS AND ISSUES A RECALL FOR THE 2011 TRAVERSE BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OCCURS. I PURCHASED MY 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE AWD IN APRIL 2014 AND WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK I NOTICED A SLIGHT SHUDDERING IN MY STEERING AS I WOULD MAKE A TURN TO EITHER MY RIGHT OR LEFT. IT FEELS LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE A WARPED ROTOR EXCEPT THAT WHEN THIS SHUDDERING OCCURS I AM NOT APPLYING THE BRAKES. ALSO, I HAVE BEEN NOTICING A WHINING NOISE AS I AM MAKING TURNS IN EITHER DIRECTION. THIS IS DEFINITELY COMING FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP. I CHECKED AND ADDED STEERING FLUID AND THE NEXT DAY THIS STILL CONTINUED. VEHICLE IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY FOR THE IN-SERVICE DATE BUT NOT FOR THE 30,000 MILE BUMPER. I HAVE A THREE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND SAFETY WAS A MAJOR FACTOR IN PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE KNOWING THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTS. I HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AT MY OWN EXPENSE. LATER IN THE DAY A PERSON CAME TO ME AND SAID MY LIGHTS AND RADIO WERE ON, DUE TO THE FACT I HAD DIFFERENT PEOPLE TRY TO GET THE KEYS OUT OF THE IGNITION THOUGHT OUT THE NIGHT I KNOW THE RADIO WAS OFF WHILE WE TALKED ABOUT HOW TO GET THE KEYS OUT. THE NEXT MORNING I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE DEALER TO BE FIXED. I HAVE A WARRANTY AFTER MARKET ON THE CAR. THE DEALER SAID THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL NOT COVER REPAIRS. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER ON WEDNESDAY 06 / 05 / 13 SQUEAKING NOISE / WINING / IT SOUNDS LIKE COMING FROM STEERING WHEEL WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT. CHEVY DEALER FURTHER INSPECTED AND FOUND NOISE TO BE COMING FROM STEERING GEAR HOUSING. RECOMMENDED PUTTING ON REVISED HOUSING TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION AND RECOMMENDED TO BE INSTALLED AND FLUSH SYSTEM TO CONVERT TO ATF. TOLD MUST PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE TO GET RID OF NOISE. AROUND MAY 11, 2012, ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE, ACCELERATING TO 65 MPH, MY CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A LOUD REPETITIVE NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. AFTER A FEW MILES, A BATTERY SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR BEGAN TO OVERHEAT AND BECOME DIFFICULT TO STEER. AS I REACHED A PULLOVER, THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND EVERYTHING ELSE QUIT WORKING (RADIO, LIGHTS, ETC.) I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND COULD NOT TURN IT BACK ON. WHEN THE CAR WAS TOWED, WE FOUND THE BELT WAS SHREDDED AND DRAGGED BEHIND THE CAR. I WAS TOLD THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE WATER PUMP. THE CAR WAS ABOUT 11 MOS OLD AND HAD ABOUT 11,000 MILES ON IT. ON JUNE 2, 2013, DEJA VU. AS I LEFT A STORE AND ACCELERATED TO 45 MPH, MY CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A LOUD REPETITIVE NOISE UNDER THE HOOD. AS I ACCELERATED, THE NOISES WERE LOUDER AND FASTER. I DROVE ABOUT 5 MILES TO WALMART, THE NOISES CONTINUED, SO I DROVE HOME, ABOUT 5 MILES. IN THE MORNING, I DROVE THE CAR VERY SLOWLY BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE BELT WAS SHREDDING AGAIN, AND AS I DROVE MORE SLOWLY, THE NOISE (FROM THE PIECES OF THE BELT SLAPPING AROUND THE ENGINE) BECAME LESS AND I HOPED I COULD MAKE THE BELT LAST UNTIL I GOT TO THE DEALER. THE SERVICE BATTERY LIGHT CAME ON AND WHEN I TURNED LEFT AT AN INTERSECTION NEAR THE DEALERSHIP, THE CAR WAS VERY HARD TO STEER AND I COULD BARELY TURN INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DRIVER FOLLOWING ME SAID HE COULD SEE THE SHREDDED BELT DRAGGING. I LEARNED THERE HAD BEEN OTHER CARS ON WHICH THE BELT HAD SHREDDED AND THAT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN TO PUT A LINING IN TO PROTECT THE BELT FROM DAMAGE, NOT SURE IF THIS HAD BEEN DONE ON MY CAR I LEARNED THERE IS ALSO A RECALL RELATED TO THE WATER PUMP. IN BOTH CASES, I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO BE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, NEAR TRUCKS, OR PASSING ON A COUNTRY ROAD. THIS SEEMS VERY DANGEROUS TO ME. *TR

HIGH PITCHED SQUEAL/SQUEAKY NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHEN TURNING EITHER LEFT OR RIGHT AT ALL FORWARD SPEEDS, REVERSE AND STATIONARY. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW SAYS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE "RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY" AND HAS BEEN A RECALL ITEM ON 2009 & 2010 TRAVERSES, BUT NOT ON THE 2011-2013. THEY EXAMINED THE VEHICLE (FOR A COST OF $39.95) AND SAID THEY COULD REPAIR IT FOR $435.54, BUT SAID IT WOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM TO DRIVE IT AS IS UNTIL IT GETS WORSE OF AFFECTS THE STEERING OPERATION. THEY HAVE DONE 2 SUCH REPAIRS ON 2011 MODELS. I BELIEVE THAT AS THIS IS HAPPENING AT 29 MONTHS (SINCE NEWLY PURCHASED BY MYSELF) AND AT SUCH A LOW MILEAGE TO HAVE STEERING ISSUES, I WOULD THINK THIS MUST BE A PERSISTENT DESIGN/ENGINEERING DEFECT. I HOPE THE NHTSA AND SAFERAR.GOV WOULD INITIATE A RECALL. MY WIFE DRIVES 140 MILE TRIPS OFTEN TO VISIT OUR DAUGHTER'S FAMILY AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN OFTEN RIDE WITH HER IN THE TRAVERSE AND WE HAVE DRIVEN THE TRAVERSE TO MYRTLE BEACH, KITTY HAWK, NC, PENNSYLVANIA AND MISSISSIPPI AND I AM CONCERNED FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. CHEVROLET USA SHOULD STEP UP TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AT THEIR COST. I HAVE NOTED ONE OTHER REPORT OF THIS STEERING PROBLEM ON THIS WEBSITE AND THOSE WHO MY DEALERSHIP SAID PAID FOR THE FIX ON THEIR TRAVERSES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE BRAKE FLUID WAS LOW AND THE FRONT PASSENGER'S SIDE BRAKE CALIPER WAS LEAKING. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BRAKE HOSE GASKET, ADDED BRAKE FLUID, AND REPLACED THE BRAKE CALIPER ON THE PASSENGER'S SIDE. THE DEALER ALSO NOTICED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD WORN TIE-RODS AND REPLACED THEM BOTH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER THE REPAIR, THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SQUEAK WHEN BEING TURNED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING HOUSING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,823.

I FIRST TOOK MY VEHICLE INTO JIM BALL PONTIAC A GM CERTIFIED DEALER IN ORCHARD PARK, NY BECAUSE OF A WHINING NOISE BY ENGINE. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A LEAK IN POWER STEERING BOX AND SERVICED IT. THE. EXT DAY AFTER I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE I WAS DRIVING UP TO AN INTERSECTION TO MAKE A LEFT AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN WHINING REALLY LOUD. MY STEERING LOCKED UP DURING MY LEFT HAND TURN CAUSE ME TO DRIVE HEAD ON WITH 2 OTHER VEHICLES THAT WERE TRAVELING ABOUT 50 MPH. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID ACCIDENT AND AFTER I PULLED OVER THE STEERING WAS NORMAL IN ABOUT 20 SECONDS. THE VEHICLE WAS RELOOKED AT JIM BALL AND THEY BLAMED IT ON A BUBBLE IN THE LINE. I OPENED A CASE WITH GM REGARDING THIS AND I'M NOT GETTING MUCH HELP. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 10 MPH AND MAKING A TURN WHEN HE HEARD NOISES COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. PULLLING UP TO THE AIRPORT PARKING AS I WAS GETTING MY TICKET TO ENTER THE PARKING LOT THE GATE OPEN AND I STEP ON THE GAS TO CONTINUE WHEN THE TRUCK SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT BEING IN BETWEEN TWO BARRIERS THE TRUCK DID HAD MINOR SCRATCHES ON THE RIGHT BUMPER WHEN IT SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT I COULD NOT GO FORWARD OR REVERSE I GOT OFF TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG AND I SAW SOMETHING UNDER THE RIGHT TIRE I GOT BACK IN THE CAR BUT COULD NOT MOVE I GOT OFF AGAIN AND TOOK A GOOD LOOK AND I SAW THE TIRED ROD WAS BROKEN THE INSIDE LOOK LIKE AN EXPLOSION ON THE INNER RIGHT SIDE I CALL ONSTAR AND THEY PROVIDED ME WITH A TOW TRUCK WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS BOUGHT ON MONDAY MY HUSBAND CALL AND THEY SAID THEY COULDNT COVER IT CAUSE IT WAS DUE TO A COLLISION WE SAID BUT WE DIDNT CRASH OR HIT ANYTHING ONLY WHEN IT SHIFTED BUT HAD NOTHING SEVERE ON THE BODY THEY SAID NO CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE WE CALL CHEVROLET CORPORATION AND THEY SAID THEY BELIEVE THE MECHANICS AND THEY WERE NOT GOING TO FIX ANYTHING SO THEY MADE OUR INSURANCE PAY FOR THE DAMAGE WHICH WE BELIEVE ITS VERY UNFAIR HAVING A WARRANTY WE GOT THE VEHICLE BACK AND WE HEAR A NOISE THE TIRES HAS 2 GASHES IT TOOK THEM 2 DAYS TO CALL BACK AND SAID NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND THE TIRE AT THE MOMENT THEY CHECK IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT BUT NOW THEY NOTICE IS DAMAGE AND THEY MADE US CALL OUR INSURANCE AGAIN BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT GOING TO PAY FOR ANYTHING OR FIX IT.
