To the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting this letter as a **formal safety complaint** regarding repeated transmission failure in my **2019 Chevrolet Traverse**, which poses a potential risk to vehicle safety. In **December 2024**, while the vehicle was still covered under General Motors’ factory powertrain warranty, an authorized GM dealership diagnosed a serious transmission defect. Due to parts being on national backorder, the repair was delayed. When the repair was eventually performed, only partial components (torque converter and valve body) were replaced rather than the full transmission. Despite this repair, the transmission **failed again less than one year later**. In **November 2025**, a second authorized GM dealership confirmed that the transmission now requires **full replacement** and that the prior repair did not correct the underlying defect. The transmission failure has resulted in **slipping, hesitation, and loss of proper power delivery**, which creates a **potential safety hazard**, particularly during acceleration, merging, and highway driving. A loss of propulsion or delayed response in traffic significantly increases the risk of an accident. This issue was identified while the vehicle was under warranty and was not properly resolved. The repeat failure suggests a **systemic defect** rather than normal wear. General Motors has declined further assistance. I am requesting that NHTSA review this complaint as part of its monitoring of potential **powertrain defects** affecting vehicle safety. Vehicle Information: * Make/Model: 2019 Chevrolet Traverse * Manufacturer: General Motors * Component: Transmission / Powertrain Thank you for your attention

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the contact was advised that there was an oil leak, but the source of the leak was undetermined. Additionally, the mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that there would be a charge for the transmission disassembly and replacement. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V668000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

I noticed that there was oil on the bottom of the transmission. I took it to a mechanic and he said that it was the rear crankshaft oil seal. He replaced it and a month later, it seems to be doing it again. I have instances where it will be in drive and I will hit the gas but it doesn't go anywhere.

I purchased a 2019 Chevy Traverse brand new off the lot as single owner and kept up with maintenance. The transmission just went out while I was on the highway and abruptly begin reducing speed and I was unable to accelerate. This was dangerous as no warning lights came on prior to this happening to warn that there were any engine issues. This could have caused an accident on the highway due to me not having control to accelerate and vehicle de-accelerated without warning. Also the passenger seat belt stop working and would not click. There was a Shift to Park warning that kept coming up on the car about 1.5 years ago that should be a recall as the car would not go off when turned off. The radio and lights in the vehicle would continue to run while the engine was off. I am concerned about all of the issue with this car that makes me question the quality and build of this vehicle. The first 4 years this vehicle was great and then all of a sudden it begin to breakdown in parts. The dealership confirmed all of these things and I asked if warranties were on these items and it was not.

When I shift the car to park and press button to turn car off, I am alerted "Shift to Park". The shift lever or gear control is not recognizing that I have already put the car in park. I have to repeatedly push on the gear shifter until the alert clears and the car engages in park. This issue happens quite often and is an inconvenience.

We bought a 2019 Chevy Traverse High Country in 2018. Oct 2021-Jan 2022 Chevy held the car to put a new transmission in, at no cost to us, with no explanation, no paperwork. Now we are in September 2025 and the car needs another transmission. In Oct 2021 I was accelerating through an intersection and the car stopped in the middle of the intersection, it was TERRIFYING. Luckily people around me realized the situation and help me get the car to safety. I had my two children in the car under 3. Fast forward to Sept 2025, I am merging on the highway accelerating and my car is SLOWING DOWN. I had the car towed to a dealership and the transmission has gone into self protect mode, identifying a gear shift problem between gears 3-4. Three transmissions in a car from end 2018-sept 2025.

The "shift to park" alert keeps coming on even when car is in park gear. One has to either put car in reverse and then shift slowly to park more than a few times for it to finally recognize it is in park. Otherwise, one cannot turn car off and brake stiffens and hard to turn car on again. This is frustrating and poses a hazard. This has been ongoing for months.

My 2019 Traverse has approximately 27k miles. I have taken the car in to a Chevy dealership for repair. The car is shuddering at around 20 mph. The dealer told me this is a common issue and after review of hundreds of complaints it appears it is. It is out of warranty by a year. Apparently the issue is likely the torque converter. However GM, requires I do a transmission flush and reprogram followed by driving 500 miles. If it does not work then I have to replace the torque converter. The transmission flush is $980 dollars and a torque converter is quoted at $3,400. If this is a known issue and no fault of the driver it should be covered by GM. Why would I pay 1,000 dollars to then pay another 3,400 for a total of $4,400 dollars for a repair for a car with 27k miles. I feel like this should be a recall based on the number of complaints and cost to buyer. This seems ridiculous. I have agreed that the initial 980 dollars as I have no choice. I am requesting someone look into the GM transmission issues from the 2017 to 2020 year vehicles.

Shift to park and warming beep saying vehicle not in park also a bad smell coming from vents when start the engine makes me dizzy and also paid over $600 for repairs to AC still not fix Freon leaks .

Jul 20, 2025

On [XXX], my 2019 Chevrolet Traverse (VIN [XXX] ) experienced a complete transmission failure. The vehicle began to hesitate, jerk during acceleration, and then completely lost the ability to shift or drive. It had to be towed, and the dealership confirmed that the transmission must be replaced. This is extremely concerning because GM previously issued Recall 20V668000 involving missing bolts in the start-stop accumulator of the transmission, which can cause fluid leaks and loss of propulsion—a potential safety hazard. Although my VIN does not show this recall as active, the symptoms and failure seem directly related to this known defect. I am requesting NHTSA investigate whether this recall should be expanded or reopened to include more affected vehicles. In addition to the transmission failure, I have had to replace the purge solenoid valve three times due to persistent check engine lights and fuel system issues, which suggests deeper reliability issues with emissions and vapor management. Lastly, there is now a hole in the exhaust pipe, which is affecting performance and may pose a safety or environmental concern due to potential carbon monoxide exposure. These multiple powertrain and emissions-related failures within the same vehicle raise serious concerns about the long-term safety, reliability, and manufacturing quality of the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this model year and VIN range further. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Upon shifting to park, an error message prompts us to "shift to park". The shifter is in park position, however the vehicle says it is not. The Chevy dealer recreated the issue and advised to repair because it will lead to not being able to turn off the engine, or not being able to start the engine, or it will drain the battery. Any of the above could lead to a safety issue depending on where the failure could occur. I had the veicle repaired at the expense of $501.29.

The Shifter Control Assembly keeps malfunctioning 3 times in the last 4 years on our 2019 Chevy Traverse. When my wife puts the shifter in Park and proceeds to shut down the vehicle, the Traverse will not recognizes that she is in park already, and will not let her shut off the vehicle. She must then reverse and forward the care several times until the sensor or solenoid engages and recognizes it is in park. This creates a dangerous and frustrating situaiton. The dealership has confirmed this is an ongoing inssue with the Traverse, and Chevy Customer service also confirmed on the phone that this is a weel known issue and she was not sure why they did not recall or take care of this issue already. Official problem is "Internal Failure to Shifter/Solenoid Assembly". This has caused issues 3 times and our vehicle is not even at 90K miles. This is not a wear ant tear part, but a core functional item that should not go bad repeatedly in such a short period of time on a newer vehicle. Chevy Customer care has encouraged me to file this complaint and get this on record and have the NHTSA begin to work with the manufacturer.

May 13, 2025

When placing the Traverse in park the car will not shut off and warns that the car is NOT in park while other indicators show that it actually is in park. Confusing and worried that it is not in park and that the car con not be safely shut off. Flipping the shift knob and button numerous times has, so far, finally allowed the car to shut off safely.

Transmission continually failing. Judders under acceleration. Metal in transmission fluid and leak in transmission

May 2, 2025

The transmission shutters and malfunctions at various times during driving. This puts not only the driver and passengers at risk but other vehicles and drivers on the road because it’s an abrupt malfunction. At one point it failed In the middle of traffic and we couldn’t move. I have had the issue diagnosed by a transmission shop. They diagnosed it as a failing transmission, which is common. They told us with these nine speed transmissions, and Chevy traverse. They also advised that it the cost is $10-$15,000 to repair. And they say they have a lot of experience with these failing. Which is why we believe it should qualify for a recall. My vehicle is available for inspection at any time. I was told over the phone by a Chevy dealership that that was the likely caused by just hearing the symptoms over the phone because they’ve had experience with so many failures like this. During the failure in traffic my check engine light showed up and there was an error shown but it disappeared when I restarted the vehicle and failed to take Note of what it was.

In 2020 or 2021 my car started annoying not recording that is was shifted into park. I got it fixed in Spring, Tx. Actually it should be recalled because it is all over the message boards.

Frequently receive warning message “Shift to Park” while the car is already at a complete parked state. You have to engage brake and wiggle the shifter to allow car to shut off. Another issue, the car display comes on and the car alarm beeps regarding the Stabilitrak. This happens on colder days usually below 40 degrees. Dealership wants $200+ to evaluate but states common concern they receive.

The power train on 2019 Chevy Traverses are horrible! There was a recall back in 2023 that caused me to get a replacement transmission. It hasn’t even been a full 2 years and the transmission is out AGAIN! Even with recent safety issues for the emissions purge valve and transmission defects on these cars, NO ONE HAS INITIATED ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE POWER TRAIN SYSTEM. This is frustrating, inconveniencing, and infuriating. I hope GM makes this right!

Jan 3, 2025

Periodically over the last 2 weeks my 2019 Chevrolet Traverse AWD has shown the "Shift to Park" message on the display. I took it to my local Chevy dealer about a week ago, after I was in the Walmart parking lot and it happened again. The dealer scheduled an appointment to check the part number yesterday. When I went to leave my car at the dealer's lot on New Year's Day for the scheduled appointment, I couldn't get the vehicle to shut down at all. I tried driving around the building and lot for about 10 minutes and tried to park in different level spots. I finally gave up and left it in a position that I figured they would be able to charge the vehicle, because a warning buzzer goes off as long as the "Shift to Park" message displays. I worried leaving the vehicle in the dealer's lot, not knowing for sure if the car would roll away into their new cars, because it might not be in park. There are numerous similar complaints on your website about the "Shift to Park" problem. Not sure why no one thinks this problem is bad enough for a recall. (Of course, my vehicle is under 36,000 miles, but over the 3 year warranty.) I am a 72 year-old woman and our area is in the midst of a frigid winter storm...not the time that I want to worry about whether my battery has been drained or whether I can safely park my vehicle, when I go to the grocery store.

The shift to park constantly appears when you go to park the vehicle only to be resolved with shaking the stick and clicking the button to get it to park fully. Additionally this car has had to have the alternator replaced after only 4 years of having it which I find to be ridiculous and have heard many other customers have had the same issue of it failing early on I think there must be something deeper to that.

The dealership has confirmed the problem along with my auto insurance company as well. Prior too there was smoke with a bad odor coming out of the vents in the vehicle that could have caused me and my kids health issues dealing with breathing had we continued to drive the vehicle. There was no lights to indicate what the issue was. Only the fumes. The fumes came out from what the dealership stated was because of the clutch burning in the torque converter. This is a major issue that could kill someone if they inhaled to much of the fumes.

When the vehicle was turned off, a message appeared: Shift To Park. The red light on Park also remained on. I had to shut down the vehicle multiple times before the message disappeared. One time I just "jiggled" the shifter and the messaged disappeared. The message did not appear whenever I turned off the vehicle, only sometimes. However, it appeared more often than not. It did appear when the service representative at the dealer moved the vehicle and turned it off. The remedy was to replace an SL-N-Switch (04054-CT) and a N-Harness (02480-CT). The cost to remove the shifter and installed these parts was $360.26. The service representative advised me that this problem could run down the battery. It is a safety issue since the battery could run down if the car was exited and the message stayed on. I found a technical bulletin from GM ([XXX], September 2019, entitled "Intermittent Shift To Park Message Displayed While Vehicle in Park for a 2018 Traverse and another technical bulletin with the same reference for May, 2021. I believe that the 2019 and 2018 Traverse share the same drive train. I also found a forum online: [XXX] that describes what other customers have found with their vehicles. My Traverse intermittently displays 'shift to park' message and I was not able to shut the SUV all the way off. I would have to play with the shift gear in order for it to turn off. I am under 50k miles.

When shifting into park, the vehicle does not recognize the shifter has been moved to the "park" setting. An alert will sound stating the vehicle must be shifted into park position. We then have to shift out of park and back into park...sometimes multiple times, before the vehicle recognizes that the shifter is in the Park position.

Car won’t turn off. Frequent shift to park messages when already in park. This appears to be common known problem and should be recalled immediately.

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while parking the vehicle, the gear shifter was shifted into park(P); however, the “Shift to Park” message was displayed. The contact shifted the gear shifter back and forth and then firmly shifted into park(P) before the proper gear was recognized. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 34,950.

The shift to park error message has been appearing on my Chevy Traverse. It first started to appear 3 months ago. I've always been able to get rid of the error by moving the shifter harder and wiggling it a little. But, one day last week when I came home and started to park my car, the shift to park error once again appeared. I have tried the trick that I have done in the past numerous times, but this time around it won't work. I called my Chevy dealership and made an appointment that same day since I can't even get out of my car since it will not let me turn off the vehicle. Even though I only have 22, 500 miles on my vehicle, but since my car is a 2019, it's no longer covered by the warranty, so I had to pay $740.00 to get my vehicle repaired. I researched online and found out that there has been a lot of cases like mine and there has been some class action lawsuit against Chevy. Chevrolet should issue a recall on all the models that has this same problem. Apparently they've known about this problem for years. If I have known that they have this issue, I would not have purchased my car.

Our Traverse shows a message “shift to park”. This happens after we have already shifted in park. This causes a continuous ding until we are able to trick the vehicle into park. The after concern is we leave the vehicle because we can’t get it to shift to park and it rolls damaging property or another person. This problem has left us stranded because we can not shift it.

VEHICLE WIL NOT SHIFT TO PARK AND WILL NOT SHUT DOWN

Oct 2, 2023

Vehicle does not recognize when it is in park. When i place the vehicle in park and try to turn off the vehicle there is a warning on the dash that says "shift to park" even though the vehicle is already in park. I had this same issue 2 years ago and the dealership fixed the issue. This issue has come up again and this time I had to pay almost $500 for the fix. Dealer says this may occur again and next time will be an $800 fix. This is not a normal wear and tear issue this is a manufacture defect and should be covered by the manufacturer.

Sep 22, 2023

Listed on a Chevy website as a recall for 2018-2019 Traverse “shift to park”. It isn’t listed on your website or with the dealership. Over 170 complaints for the car not recognizing that you put it in park, which can drain the battery or worse cause your vehicle to move when it shouldn’t. I just paid $100 (luckily I had coverage), but this should be recalled. Dealership stated the part was on back order, which means a lot of people are having the same issue. This should be recalled and money refunded to customers.

Sep 12, 2023

After putting it in park, turn off car and it stated it’s not in park! Sometime I can get it to shut off by messing with shifter. Sometimes just let it run until it shuts off!

Sep 11, 2023

I'm joining all the other people that have the shift to park issue on their 2019 Chevy Traverse. When you put it in park it does not register that it's in park so you can't turn off the car. If that's not a safety issue not sure what is? GM needs to have this part recalled asap before something bad happens. I'm also scared it's not in park when it says it is because who knows what's going on.

Shift to park error message after shifting into Park. Required replacement of wire harness which dealer was aware. Seems to me that should be a recall item.

Aug 23, 2023

After one shifts the car in park and stops engine, a display warning and beeping sound starts stating "shift to park". Even though car is already in park. The beeping sound and message does not go away or quits. One cannot exit vehicle. Incorrect error and display messages and audio warnings are misleading and can lead to unknown safety concerns... The problem is repeatable and is occuring more frequently. The only way we have been able to "leave/stop" the car, is to repeatedly start car, shift into gear, shift into park and stop car engine. After 4 or 5 times, the car finally stops with no incorrect safety warning and beeping, and we can exit the car. Sometimes we have to drive a short distance to clear up this safety concern/issue.

Transmission says it’s not in park, but it is. This is an ongoing issue with GM vehicles but my vehicle is out of warranty and “doesn’t fit in the vin break” of the TSB. If this is a known issue, and it’s a safety issue, there needs to be a recall

Jul 25, 2023

The car has continued issues with the “Shift to Park” defect that prevents drivers from shutting off and locking their vehicles. This keeps happening when the car is in park and for some reason doesn't read that it is. This a tremendous issue with this vehicle that GM should be covering because it's for multiple models and a huge safety concern. Customers should not be spending any money out of pocket for this safety concern that needs to be rectified by GM. Car currently at the dealer to get issue fixed to be told that this is a huge known issue that GM refuses to issue a recall on and that they have seen many vehicles come in and they have to replace the unit at the customers cost which is not fair. I've only had this vehicle for one year and no reason I should have had this many issues with this vehicle and such a big one that isn't covered.

Jul 9, 2023

Shift to park feature has starting failing. Causing several issues, the vehicle won’t let you turn it off or lock it. It is does not register that it is in park making it a hazard. There has been a high rise of this exact issue.

Jun 20, 2023

My vehicle has been displaying a ''shift to park" message. The message appears when I put the vehicle in park. When I go to turn off the car the vehicle will not turn off. Sometimes If I giggle the gear shifter violently enough the car will turn off. I have had leave my car running on multiple occasions. Woken up to dead battery's because my car WILL NOT TURN OFF. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership on 3 occasions to be looked at. The first time it was noted and I was told they couldn't look at it. The second time My vehicle needed all new transmission work ( on a 2019 model car) but was told since they couldn't recreate the shift to park message they couldn't do anything about it. The 3rd time they were able to recreate the issue but wanted me to pay $1k+ for ''fix'' the problem. But the fix was just to turn off the display message. My vehicle will not turn off.

The vehicle has a bucking motion while accelerating from stop up to speeds in excess of 25 mph . The bucking only occurs while shifting. The cars RPMs drop during this bucking and the vehicle comes close to stalling. The vehicle has 42,000 miles on it. Dealership is saying this is common in all traverse Ciocca dealership Lawrence township NJ but changed transmission and still bucking they said they cant do nothing and keep driving it till 1500-2000 miles

May 17, 2023

Put the car in park and turn off and I get a Shift To Park message although the car is already in park. After researching, this appears to be a very common problem on these vehicles. Why is there not a recall to have this fixed? Although my car only has 28,000 miles, it is outside of the 3 year warranty. I transport children every day and it's frustrating when I can't get out of my car until I figure out how to get the message to go away. Shame on Chevrolet! Have an appointment with dealership in the morning!

When you put the transmission into park, but the Driver info screen comes on and asks you to shift to park as your shutting the Traverse down. I did have it to my mechanic for an oil change and he checked the tranny cable and said it was ok. He had to like wiggle the shifter to get screen to clear. He said it may be electrical. I have a appointment at a transmission shop but it isn't for a couple weeks yet.

Sep 19, 2022

When the car is idling and you place the car from drive to park, it gives you an error message "shift in park" and and will allow you to kill the engine but the alarm goes off. You don't know if the car is still in drive or still in park. There are two service bulletins on this. 19-NA-206 is one. GM knows there is a safety defect and should issue a recall for a car that can't tell you safely if it's in park or drive. my car is being worked on for this at Hendrick Chevrolet in Cary nc. happens multiple times a day.

Sep 14, 2022

The issue is that after driving the vehicle when it is shifted into park the transmission fails to recognize that it is in park and sends a message to the screen to shift into park. It appears to be related to a buildup of material on the contacts for the sensor. The situation can usually be overcome by wiggling the shifter until the contacts make a proper connection.

2019 Chevrolet Traverse having "shift to park" error when shifted into park and it will not turn off. I am not able to shut down my vehicle occurs, which is at random but with more frequency lately. I often have to turn car on, put into reverse and repeat the process, or jiggle the gear shifter to get it to turn off. I have read this is a common issue and GM is being sued in a class action lawsuit because of it. My dealership isn't acknowledging it and wants me to pay to have it completely replaced. I have also read it gets worse in most cases and in some cases causes the vehicle to shift into gear accidentally or drains the battery completely because it thinks the car is in drive and stays on. Possibly related, the vehicle is starting to "buck" when in slow acceleration/shifting automatic gears.

About one month ago, I began receiving a "Shift to Park" message in error when powering off my car and in park. There is no way to override the message, during which the car remains on and there is a loud beeping noise. I have to power the car back on and manipulate the sensors to make the "Shift to Park" message go away - and this doesn't always work or takes several times. In addition to the obvious concern, I'm also concerned about my car's battery every time this happens. I have young children and am afraid to drive my car right now because of this issue. We bought out our lease in May and our Warranty expired about three months ago and Chevy is refusing to fix the defected part. Chevy is aware of this problem in older and other 2019 vehicles, they have yet to recall the 2019 Traverse. I took my car to a local mechanic to replace the faulty wire, with the same wire which will likely cause the same issue in a matter of time. Consumers should not be responsible for unethical practices. Please hold Chevy accountable for their poor choices!

When car is shifted into park, there is an error saying that the vehicle is not in Park and the lights and warning chime turns on. It happens 90% of the time. I can move the shifter back and forth and some times it will stop and work properly. I can also try to move the shifter while in park without moving into another gear and that might work but it may take 5 -10 tries. Do a google search and you'll find lots of threads on bad Gen 2 shifters for this year and Make/Model. No warnings prior to malfunctioning. Shift to Park Issue with warning light and message error - shift to park.

The vehicle gives a message of "Shift to park" but the vehicle is in park. This is a safety issue and could cause harm to somebody if the vehicle does not think it's in park and start's rolling. It also doesn't let the vehicle shut completely off because it thinks its still in drive! There are alot of forums and complaints on this issue. Local dealership states yes we have heard of this issue BUT "It's not on a recall list yet and also not covered under warranty" This should be a recall and fixed by Chevrolet without charging customers $400-$1,000 to fix a BIG issue with numerous vehicles. PLEASE HELP WITH THIS KNOWN ISSUE

Jun 27, 2022

We constantly got the message to "Shift to Park" even though the indicator showed we were already in Park! We had to shift to Drive and back into Park several times before our car recognized that we were already in Park. We could not turn the car off until the system finally realized that we were in Park.

The gear shift won't register as being placed into park. It often requires multiple on/off cycles of the vehicle along with repeated shifting into drive/park. Preliminary research showed it as a unique problem to this setup. I believe the safety risk is present by the inability to confirm successful changing of gears.

Jun 7, 2022

I get ‘Shift to Park’ message and constant dinging when car is placed in park and turn off ignition. After doing some research, this seems to be a common issue with various 2016-2020 Chevrolet vehicles. I am hopeful that this will be covered under my vehicle warranty from the dealer, but we should not have to hassle with that if GM is well aware of the issue in many vehicles. A recall should be issued and GM should cover to replace and repair back to proper working order. When many people spend a year's salary or more on a brand new vehicle and it doesn't even last them two years, that is not right. I only have 24,000 miles on my vehicle and this should not be an issue I am having to deal with right now. GM needs to step up and take care of this issue immediately.

The electronic cord in the shifter showing the "shift to park" message code caused my car battery to die and be unable to shut my car off and on for MONTHS. This electronic problem was nothing related to anything I did but the vehicle itself causing me to finally take it in because it was not safe for me and my kids to go far in case the battery would die. It costed me almost $500 and 6 HOURS of wasted time at the dealership. I would HIGHLY recommend and appreciate a recall reimbursement on this issues- I am not the first to have this happen.

Feb 17, 2022

The transmission is shifted into park mechanism does not work and is available for inspection. The Shift Into Park notice in the Driver Information Center lights and chimes as long as the system does not believe the transmission is not in park. This will cause the battery to go dead, or in some instances you can't turn off the engine nor leave the vehicle until this error is cleared. It has been confirmed by a dealer (Henna) whose service contact said they had the same problem on their 2019 Traverse plus many, many comments about this problem for this and other GM models which have been posted on the Internet. The vehicle nor the component have been inspected by others, but another dealer will be attempting to fix the problem under one of serveral TSBs created by GM. No other warnings nor symptoms happened before this started.

Intermittently after I put the Trans. in park and shut off the engine I get a message to shift trans. to park. My 2019 Chevrolet Traverse LT with ~28,600 miles on it within the past month has been providing me with a 'Shift to Park' error on the Driver Information Center (DIC) when I have already shifted it to Park and shut the car off (engine no longer running). The shifter assembly is not recognizing that I in fact do not have it in gear and the car is in Park. The error does not go away until I re-start the car, put it in gear, shift back to park, wait a few seconds, and then shut the car off again.

Intermittent "Action Required" alert on the display to "Shift to Park" after already shifting into park and turning off the car. Sometimes after jiggling the gearshift it will stop. Sometimes have to turn the car back on and shift into reverse and park again. Sometimes have to do this several times. Appears, after research online, this is a known issue under TSB 19-NA-206, September 2019. I have scheduled to take to the dealership for inspection. But it also sounds like the recommended repair is only a band-aid that will require a further repair.

Sep 7, 2021

When car is put into park and I turn off the car with the push button, I get a message of “shift to park”. The car is in park but the car doesn’t think it’s in park and won’t fully shut down. Warning chimes continue. Tapping the shifter control forward to the radio seems to kick it back in and the car shuts down with no more warning chimes. Looked this up online and there are numerous people complaining about this and it happening to them. Sounds like the whole shifter assembly needs replacing. It doesn’t matter if I’m close to home or a thousand miles away, what happens when I can’t tap the shifter to get it to shut down completely? Safety and mechanical issue that has to be addressed and fixed. Thank you.

Car began to not shift to park when attempting to park. Dealer said it was a common problem and it is a huge safety issue as if the car is not engaging in park it could be in an unsafe condition on an incline and begin to roll. There maybe other issues I'm not even aware of but I feel gm should recall this defect if it especially a known issue among many vehicles.

The problem appears to be a shift relay that is not making contact with the metal tab that depresses the sensor telling the computer the vehicle is in fact in park. Not thinking the car is in park can cause a driver to panic the car is going to roll into another car, fixed object or another person. This problem has been confirmed multiple times and there is currently a GM bulletin out on the problem. The fix is to replace the entire shift assembly at the owner's cost - $500. The only warning message received is '"shift into park".

2019 TRAVERSE WAS TRAVELING DOWN ROAD ABOUT ONE MILE FROM STARTING LOCATION CAR SHUT OFF AND ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON THAN NOTICED SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT., FLAMES SHORTY AFTER. FD WAS CALLED AND ARRIVED AND PUT OUT FIRE. A FLUID TRAIL WAS NOTICED BEHIND CAR LEADING TO OUR HOUSE (1 MILE AWAY). NO ISSUES WITH THE CAR UP TO THIS POINT. CAR WAS TOWED AND INSURANCE CALLED, NOTIFIED GM THE NEXT DAY AFTER SEEING A RECALL ON LEAKING TRANSMISSION (THIS VIN IS NOT ON THAT LIST). GM BASICALLY SAID THAT ONCE WE CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR US. INSURANCE COMPANY (ALLSTATE) SAID THEY WILL LOOK INTO THIS. CAR WAS A LEASE AND WE HAVE NO RECOURSE. IT SEEMS FISHY TO ME THAT SOME MODELS HAVE A RECALL AND THIS APPEARS TO BE SOME KIND KIND OF LEAK FROM THAT AREA. IF GM DOESN'T CARE HOW WILL THEY KNOW IF THIS RECALL NEEDS TO INVOLVE OTHER MODELS AND VIN'S OF THIS CAR. I UNDERSTAND THAT WE LEASED THE CAR SO WE LOSE AND CAN'T RECOUP ANYTHING NOR WILL THEY WORK WITH US TO LOWER THE COST OF A REPLACEMENT. WHAT IF MY YOUNG CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR OR MY MOTHER IN LAW WHO HAS A TOUGH TIME GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE CAR, SOMEONE COULD OF BEEN INJURIED OR WORST. SOMEONE NEEDS TO CAER ABOUT THIS. THIS HAPPENED IN NORWALK CT ON EAST ROCKS RD 06851. SUNNY CLEAR DAY CAR WAS MOVING FORWARD WHEN IT LOST POWER. NO RECENT WORK ON CAR, NO ACCIDENTE NORWALK CT FIRE INCIDENT REPORT 21-001007

WHEN I PUT THE STICK SHIFT IN PARK, IT SIGNALS THE VEHICLE IS NOT IN PARK. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TRAVERSE. THEY PUT IN A BRA TO HELP IT STAY IN PARK, THE BRA FAILED AND THEY ADJUSTED IT AGAIN. I CAN START AND STOP THE CAR BUT CAN'T TURN THE CAR OFF. THIS HAPPENS IN ANY ENVIRONMENT, ON A HILL, FLAT LAND IN/OUT OF GARAGE. IS TIS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE

WHILE DRIVING MY 2019 TRAVERSE, WHEN I AGGRESSIVE BREAKING AND DOING A U-TURN I CANNOT ACCELERATE AFTERWARDS, WHEN I PUSH THE GAS PEDAL DOWN TO THE FLOOR IT DOESN'T ACCELERATE. I'VE BEEN ALMOST HIT MULTIPLE TIMES BECAUSE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE AFTER DOING A U-TURN. I HAVE MULTIPLE VEHICLES AND I KEEP FORGETTING ABOUT THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT WHEN I'M DRIVING IT. HAS HAPPENED SINCE THEY OWN THE CAR ABOUT EIGHT TIMES.
