Chevrolet Van Years to Avoid
The 1996 Chevrolet Van accumulated the most complaints, primarily concerning transmission failures and brake system issues. The 1995-1997 models experienced problematic 4L60E automatic transmissions that often failed around 100,000 miles. Fuel injection problems plagued some 1992-1996 models with the TBI system. The 1994 model year saw intake manifold gasket failures on V8 engines. ABS systems on mid-90s models proved unreliable and expensive to repair. These years require careful inspection of drivetrain components before purchase.
Best Chevrolet Van Years
The 1991 Chevrolet Van represents the sweet spot of this generation, with proven reliability and fewer reported issues. Earlier 1980s models with carbureted engines are simple to maintain but increasingly hard to find in good condition. The 1990-1991 years benefited from refined fuel injection without the later transmission problems. If you need a vintage full-size van, these earlier years offer the best ownership experience.
