VEHICLE SHUT OFF FOR NO APPARENT REASON WHILE ENTERING ONTO AN EXPRESSWAY. LOSS OF POWER STEERING MADE VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO CONTROL TO SAFELY GET ONTO THE SHOULDER. SUDDEN LOSS OF SPEED MADE THE VEHICLE A FURTHER HAZARD. ONCE ON THE SHOULDER, THE VEHICLE COULD BE PHYSICALLY KEYED OFF, THEN RESTARTED WITHOUT ISSUE. CAUSE OF FAILURE IS UNKNOWN.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO A FRACTURED TIMING CHAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOO OLD AND HAD TOO MANY MILES; THEREFORE, THEY COULD NOT ASSIST. THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO CALL NHTSA. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.

I BEGAN ACCELERATING ONTO A RAMP TO ENTER ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY AND MY ASPEN COMPLETELY LOSS ALL POWER SUDDENLY. THE ENGINE JUST SHUT DOWN INCLUDING POWER ALL ELECTRONICS. I HAD TO LET THE CAR GLIDE TO THE SHOULDER, PUT IT IN PARK AND RESTART THE CAR, WHICH IT STARED AS IT ALWAYS HAS. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE NOR DID IT HAPPEN AGAIN.
