THERE IS A SAFETY/ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM WHEN FILLING UP THE GAS TANK OF OUR ASPEN. WHEN FILLING THE GAS TANK AND THE GAS PUMP SHUTS OFF, GAS SPURTS OUT ALL OVER THE PERSON FILLING THE TANK, THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE GROUND AND IS A SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM FOR THE DODGE DURANGO'S, BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO FIND ONE FOR THE ASPEN. THIS IS A SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD THAT CHRYSLER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRING. THE CAR HAS BEEN GUSHING GAS OUT OUT OF THE FILLER TUBE EVERY TIME IT IS FILLED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. THEN THE FUEL PUMP COMPLETELY FAILED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED ON 02/13/12 AT A COST OF $1137.34. THEN ON 02/28 THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON REQUIRING AN NEW EVAPORATIVE EMISSIONS SYTEM ECIM SWITCH HAD TO BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $178.17. THE CAR STILL GUSHES GASOLINE OUT AT EVERY FILL UP AND WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR A FIX FROM THE DEALER ON THIS ISSUE. *JS

EVERY TIME I PUT FUEL INTO THE GAS TANK IT FORCEFULLY GUSHES A LARGE AMOUNT OF GASOLINE BACK OUT OF THE TANK AFTER I AM FINISHED FUELING. THIS CAUSES GASOLINE TO SPLASH BACK ALL OVER THE PERSON FILLING THE VEHICLE, ALL OVER THE GROUND AND ALL OVER THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENS AT NUMEROUS GAS STATIONS, AND DOES NOT MATTER HOW SLOW OR HOW FULL I FILL THE TANK. IT HAPPENS AFTER THE PUMP HAS STOPPED FILLING AND IS TURNED OFF BUT DURING THE PROCESS OF REMOVING THE NOZZLE. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU WAIT FOR THE PUMP TO AUTOMATICALLY TURN OFF, OR IF YOU SHUT OF THE FUEL PUMP OFF BEFORE EVEN REACHING TO FULL LINE (NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR LITTLE GAS I PUT IT, IT CONTINUES TO BE AN ISSUE). IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE GASOLINE GETS INTO SOMEONE'S EYES OR CAUSES SERIOUS INJURY TO SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY, THIS CAN NOT BE SAFE.

FUEL GUSHES BACK OUT WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FILLED. THIS PROBLEM DID NOT APPEAR UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS ABOUT FOUR YEARS OLD AND HAD 36,000 MILES. I HAVE USED MULTIPLE GAS PUMPS AND IT IS NOT FUEL STATION RELATED. APPARENTLY, CHRYSLER IS AWARE OF THIS AS A PROBLEM ON THE ASPEN AND THE DODGE DURANGO, AS WELL AS SEVERAL JEEP MODELS, AS THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORUMS AND VIDEOS ON THE INTERNET THAT SHOW THIS PROBLEM TO BE WIDESPREAD. I FEEL THIS PROBLEM CONSTITUTES A FIRE SAFETY HAZARD FOR NOT ONLY THE OPERATOR BUT OTHER SERVICE STATION CUSTOMERS NEARBY. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY AN INLET CHECK VALVE FAILURE IN THE FUEL TANK. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE DEALER, THEY ACTED AS IF THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM IN ANY CHRYSLER VEHICLE, BUT SAID IT MIGHT BE HAPPENING ON THE JEEP LIBERTY. THEY REFUSED TO ORDER A REPLACEMENT TANK WITHOUT ME BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN AND THEN FILLING IT UP WITH FUEL SO THEY COULD OBSERVE THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE REP AT THE DEALER ALSO SUGGESTED THAT AFTER THEY OBSERVED THE PROBLEM, I SHOULD RUN THE TANK BELOW HALF FULL TO FACILITATE REPLACEMENT. THEY SAID THE COST OF REPLACEMENT WOULD BE AT MY EXPENSE. *TR

IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO DEALERSHIP 3 OR 4 TIMES WITH SHORT TERM FIXES BUT REVERTS TO DOING IT AGAIN. WHILE FILLING UP THE VEHICLE AT THE GAS STATION, THE PUMPS AUTO-SHUT OFF FEATURE WOULD ACTIVATE AND SEVERAL SECONDS LATER, FUEL WOULD SHOOT BACK OUT OF THE VEHICLE'S FILLER TUBE. WE JUST BOUGHT THE VEHICLE (USED) ON NOVEMBER 19,2011 AND THIS HAS HAPPENED ON TWO OTHER OCCASIONS WHILE FUELING THE VEHICLE SINCE THAT TIME. AFTER SOME ONLINE INVESTIGATION, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. NOT ONLY WITH THIS VEHICLE BUT WITH QUITE A FEW CHRYSLER VEHICLES IN GENERAL. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT IS SPILLED ON THE VEHICLE, ON THE GROUND AND ON MYSELF WHEN ATTEMPTING TO FUEL THE VEHICLE. *TR

THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR HIS YEAR MODEL VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,900 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 43,000.

THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 36,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 43,000.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHRYSLER ASPEN. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ADD FUEL TO THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT GASOLINE WOULD SPILL ONTO HIS CLOTHING. THE FAILURE WAS SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER:09V003000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY). THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER REGISTERED A COMPLAINT FOR THE CONTACT AND ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 57,000.

I HAVE A 2007 CHRYSLER ASPEN AND THE GAS TANK OVERFLOWS WHEN FILLING UP. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING NOW FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS. I HAVE TO STOP FILLING THE TANK MANUALLY BEFORE IT FILLS UP TO AVOID THE OVERFLOW. I CHECKED WITH CHRYSLER AND THEY STATED THE ENTIRE GAS TANK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO FIX IT. THE COST OF THAT REPAIR IS ALMOST $600 (NOT CHEAP). I HAVE READ OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING WITH THE ASPEN AS WELL. AND I UNDERSTAND THAT DODGE HAD A RECALL ON CERTAIN VEHICLES BECAUSE OF THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AND MY FAMILY, BUT THE FIX IS COST PROHIBITIVE. WE ARE BEYOND THE STANDARD WARRANTY PERIOD OF 3 YEARS/36,000 MILES. THE TRUCK HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR THE TANK TO START OVERFLOWING OTHER THAN A DESIGN DEFECT OF SOME SORT WITH THE GAS TANK. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD A VEHICLE THAT OVERFLOWS LARGE AMOUNTS OF GAS FROM THE TANK. THE OVERFLOW IS NOT FROM THE GAS PUMP ITSELF, AS THAT SHUTS OFF APPROPRIATELY. IT IS AS IF THE GAS BUILDS UP IN THE TANK AND THEN SPITS IT OUT. *TR

UPON FILLING FUEL TANK, AFTER THE NOZZLE CLICKS OFF, FUEL PURGES BACK THROUGH THE FILL NECK COVERING EVERYTHING IN THE SURROUNDING AREA, CAUSING A VERY SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS CONDITION. IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH OF AN IMAGINATION TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WAS NEARBY. GAS STATIONS ARE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS, BUT THIS CONDITION JUST ADDS TO THAT DANGER! WE'RE IN THE MIDST OF WINTER HERE IN THE NE, SO THE SPILLED FUEL DOESN'T SEEM ALL THAT BAD, BUT DURING THE SUMMER IN 95 DEGREES, SCARY! ITS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY BURNED OR EVEN KILLED! I HAVE BEEN IN THE FIRE SERVICE FOR OVER 35 YEARS, HAVE SEEN MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FIRES AND THIS IS DEFINITELY A CONDITION THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED ASAP. CALLED THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THE VEHICLE WILL PROBABLY NEED A FUEL TANK DUE TO A POSSIBLE DEFECT IN THE ROLLOVER VALVE LOCATED ON TOP OF THE TANK. ONE MORE THOUGHT ON THIS PROBLEM. WITH THE VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM IN PLACE AT STATIONS HERE IN THE NY METRO AREA, MAYBE THE EPA SHOULD ALSO BE INVOLVED, BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT I HAVE SPILLED ON THE GROUND IS PROBABLY CRIMINAL. KIND OF DEFEATS THE VAPORS THAT WERE RECOVERED.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 CHRYSLER ASPEN. SHE STATED THAT WHEN FUELING HER VEHICLE WITH GASOLINE SHE HEARD A CLICKING NOISE AND ALL OF THE GASOLINE CAME BACK OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND LEAKED ALL OVER THE GROUND. THE FAILURE OCCURRED EVERY TIME SHE FILLED HER VEHICLE WITH GASOLINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CHECK ENGINE VALVE AND THAT THE WHOLE FUEL SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.
