The contact owns a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the charging port located between the 2nd and 3rd row seating on the driver’s side caught on fire. No warning light was illuminated before the failure. The contact pulled off a busy roadway and pulled into a parking lot, all while her 3-year-old son was seated in the 2nd row rear driver's side seat and was being surrounded by smoke. The contact stated that it took approximately 10 minutes to pull over and safely exit the vehicle to remove her son from the vehicle. The contact's son received medical attention for smoke inhalation. The Police and local Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. A Fire report was filed however, the Fire report number was not provided. The origin of the fire was the 110-Volt charging port due to an electrical failure. The contact stated that the child seat was also damaged and needed to be replaced due to the plastic being burned. The vehicle was towed to the residence, where it remained for several weeks. However, the vehicle was later towed back to the local independent dealer where the vehicle was purchased and remained at the dealer for further investigation. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.

Left Rear sliding door shut door stuck in locked position and will not unlock manually or by powering. Air bag light stays on.
Vehicle engine exploded in the middle of the night. Car would remote start on its own as I would lock the doors and walk away prior to the incident. Also the airbag light would come off and on. Notice the day of the incident that the dimmer would disappear and reappear. Very strange I thought. The house could've burned down while we were sleeping. If it wasn't for our neighbors and the quick response of those firefighters it could've possibly burned the house down while we were in there sleeping. The van was picked up by the insurance company two days ago. Not sure what happened as far as it being inspected yet. They have given me the silent treatment. Went to a Chrysler dealership, not where I bought it. This van has had one recall done in 2015. Rear quarter vent window switch.
The contact's partner owns a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country. The contact stated while his partner was driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver noticed smoke coming from the rear driver's side sliding door interior and a strong burning electrical wiring odor. The driver pulled over to the side of the road and exited the vehicle. The contact met the driver and noticed that there was a significant amount of smoke coming from the sliding door with but there was no visible flames. The contact used a fire extinguisher and extinguished the burning and smoke; however, the failure recurred after driving and parking the vehicle at the residence. The contact used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the burning and smoke. The contact the contacted the fire department who completely extinguished the burning. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V234000 (Electrical System); however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer and other unknown dealers were contacted and informed the contact that the earliest availability to inspect the vehicle was in two weeks and half. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a field investigator would be sent to inspect the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 187,000.

The steering wheel controls stopped working. Had a mechanic look at it and said it was the clock spring contacts were compromised.
Items of concern range from a sliding door that will intermittently refuse to respond to the key fob command, or it will randomly close on passengers. Additionally, the rear hatch unexpectantly closes on members of my family as they remove groceries. Lately, the time display and rear camera have ceased to function. At times, the dash screen lights up with a gray display that illuminates the cab and makes night-driving very difficult. When this happens, I cannot get it to go dark.
No check engine warning, unpredictable no start, no crank. Physical well being of grandchild, others and self at risk due to high temperatures. This also puts stress on mental well being, how to fix, can I fix, the cost and constant worry of being stranded. Have not confirmed with dealer. Did have a shop review. Battery, alternator good, starter is new. Issue is sporadic and hard to duplicate, but happening daily. Research on internet shows this is common occurrence without a definitive solution. Who has to have a breakdown, not just mechanically speaking to find a solutuon?
The passenger sliding door locked is stuck locked and the door will not open.
I was driving on I95 and the car completely shut down. The RPM went to 0. It started up again after about twenty minutes. I had the car repaired (throttle body replaced) and since that incident I have had this same thing happen four more times. The car seems to “resets” itself. I have had the throttle body replaced twice, the ignition control switch twice, the relay harness and then the relay redone. The van only does this periodically. The dealership had my van for six weeks and “couldn’t duplicate the problem “. This usually happens when driving for over an hour and speeds over 65mph. Last week I was driving to work, eleven miles from home and it happened again. The van restarted after sitting about thirty minutes.
The rear power outlet caught fire while driving today 03/05/2024. Nothing was plugged in to the outlet.
When vehicle is exposed to consistent sunlight and heat during the spring/summer months, the driver's side power sliding door will not latch properly, causing the door to repeatedly try to latch itself shut. This occurs when opening/closing the door, and also while the vehicle is in motion. For example, if the door is shut properly, and the vehicle goes over a bump or something disrupts the ride, the door will think it is open, the warning light comes on the dashboard, the interior lights activate and the electric latch motor will repeatedly activate until the van thinks the door is closed. Even when parked, I have returned to the vehicle to find the door trying to close itself
2014 Town and Country - 78,000 miles vehicle experiencing crank no start. Known issue and no recall issued by manufacturer for this model.
Driving along vehicle shut off. Back doors locked would not open had a 2 and 3, year old in car seats. Trunk wouldn’t open only front doors. Had to climb over the bucket seats to get the children out, trapped in heat, 2 year old with epilepsy. Got the children out, had to then pull their car seats over the bucket seats. Towed to garage. Was told it needed a fuse box $1500. On back order for 5 days. We are 2,000 miles from home. Repair shop tried to put part in van starts smoking Tells us to send it to the dealer who now says it needs a tipen for $2800. How does a vehicle just stop and lock its occupants in? If it was on fire, one or both of our babies could be harmed. We then had to fly home since we at the time had no vehicle and were way past our vacation. Our broken van is in Massachusetts.
Door lock buzzes in passenger side sliding door. Sometimes it will not unlock. Inability to open door could put our safety at risk someday.
Driver captain seat head rest deployed on it’s own without an accident. Fortunately, I was sitting in the parked when it deployed….no injury just scared me. Electrical: I’ve been dealing with a parasitic drain no my battery. I have these amber lights around my light switch, around my overhead console, around my inverter power outlets in the rear and around other dash controls. You can only see it at night. Dodge said it was because of a failing radio. I disconnected the radio, waited until it got dark, and the lights were still on. Pulling the M12 fuse (30 amp) the power drain stopped and the amber lights go out. I’m unclear what’s causing the additional drain. On the internet I keep running a cross bad TIPM’s for sporadic electrical issues and power drains that happen. May trade it.
I took my van in because the vents were not blowing full force when first starting the vehicle. After 5 mins the air blows normal. I looked online for potential recalls and found that 2014 and 2015 dodge and Chrysler vans had this issue and found that others had this issue and the module needed to be reprogrammed. I had the service center replace the blower motor and test the relays and wires and even with the new motor, it still has this 5 min delay to blow full force. I called Chrysler and they don't see recalls for my van but I believe this is part of the recall. I think this issue started last summer and had my whole ac system checked and the tech put dye in the system and there are no leaks. I use Firestone Complete Auto Care so they have my records if you need them. I can also give you the link of the website I found regarding the recall. You can inspect my vehicle if you would like. It happens every time I start my van. I am a quadriplegic and cannot sweat. This is a safety issue especially in the AZ summers. If this cannot be resolved through NHTSA can you please tell me how to fix the issue or give me info on where it can be remedied. Thank you! The rear hatch on my 2014 Town & Country opens randomly, without my pressing the key. It has happened about 7 times this year. It started in late January. I was out of town and my van was parked in a residential parking lot. When I came out the hatch was up. I thought maybe I had hit my key or something during the evening. Not so, now I can go out at any time and the hatch is up. I am afraid it will come open while I am driving. Today, 3/28/23, it has come open 3 times already.
Vehicle caught on fire - flames coming out of driver's tail light. Interior smoke before flames coming out. Thank God, we were home and noticed and was not in the middle of the night.. There was a 5 gallon full gas tank within 3 feet of this fire. It could have taking my whole house out and my family. Clearly there is a problem with the electrical system on the drivers side toward the rear.
In the middle of driving the vehicle steering wheel seized up and the engine shut off in the middle of driving. This is extremely dangerous and I had my two children in the car
We have had several instances where the car, while driving, just shuts off and have lost braking and control. I am pretty sure this is due to a faulty ignition switch. I have been in heavy traffic when this happens and by the grace of God have not caused a serious wreck. There is no warning when this happens and there is nothing in particular that causes the issue. Very scary and this should be recalled by Chrysler. I have not taken it to the dealer yet but plan to because it is extremely dangerous.

The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to park on the side of the road and exited the vehicle with his grandson before seeing fire coming from the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. The contact stated no one was injured nor sought medical attention. The fire department extinguished the fire and filed a fire report. The fire department deemed the vehicle totaled. The contact stated a police officer also arrived at the location of the incident and filed a police report. The vehicle was not drivable. The contact had the vehicle towed to the tow lot. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

The rear passenger-side sliding door actuator failed forcing the door in a locked position. Because of this failure the door was entirely unusable and could not be opened or unlocked in any ways from inside the vehicle. This clearly posses a safety risk in case of emergency if doors become unavailable due to a faulty part. There is not notification that the door is in a failure state until you go to try to open the door. There is an existing warranty bulletin for 2015 and 2016 models, and I believe this should be extended to earlier models as they have a high failure rate and pose a safety risk as well.

The driver side sliding door tries to open on its own in hot weather after hitting bumps. If the vehicle has been sitting in the sun, the door will try to open, the chime will sound, and the open door light indicator appears on the dash. The door will continue to try to open and close repeatedly until hitting another bump, or until getting out of the vehicle and pounding on the door. The wiring harness in the door was replaced but that did not fix the issue.
The passenger side sliding door has issues locking and unlocking. The actuator buzzes whenever the car locks or unlocks, even after a replacement part installed. When automatically closing the door, it often gets “stuck” trying to close and you can hear the door/lock motor repeatedly trying to pull the door closed and lock it even though the door is in the closed position. It will do this until the battery drains if not dealt with. To stop it, I have to manually open the door and slam it closed. Oftentimes the door is just stuck and will not open when in this stuck mode, which is the major safety concern. This has been happening for over a year now. It is especially worse in the heat, but happens all year. These doors are also frozen shut in the winter and the family has to enter the vehicle through the front driver or passenger doors.

Driver-side sliding passenger door cinch motor keeps activating when it is hot outside. Usually when above 85 degrees and the direct sun hitting the side of the van. Sometimes runs continually for one to two minutes. Sometimes after locking doors alarm will go off on its own. When driving down the road door ajar light and chime will come on also interior lights will flash. No issue in colder weather. Happens all summer long.
Twice now the vehicle has turned itself off. Once idling in a parking lot and once driving down the road. There were no warning lights that came on, the engine just died and all the electronics reset (clock, speedo, etc.).
The car was turned on and 3 children were getting buckled in both rear rows of the vehicle. Within seconds the cabin was filling with smoke. An electrical fire had started from the rear charging area which is located next to the second row drivers side seat. Everyone exited with no physical injuries, although panic was experience and a new anxiety now for driving in cars. Since then I’ve read that this year Chrysler T&C has had multiple reports of similar incidences yet no recall on file.
While traveling at highway speed 65 MPH when the engine and electrical went off without warning, causing all lights, in and out to go off, power steering to be lost and I'm sure power brakes to be compromised. Was able to put vehicle in neutral and restart the engine while coasting. This did happen at night leaving the vehicle without lights while it is coasting and loosing speed on a busy freeway. This has happened a few times previously but this is the first time on the freeway.

Passenger side door lock buzzing, fails to lock or unlock at times. This could be a safety issue with anyone especially children.
NHTSA has an open Investigation: PE 20-012. In this investigation, "Complainants allege a fire started at the charge hub mounted in the trim panel located on the driver's side of the vehicle between the second and third row seating." My 2014 Town and Country has an issue where the motor and/or latching mechanism overheats and the door starts to open and close on its own. This event only happens during the extreme heat of the summer (such as 90 degrees and above). The local dealership recommended replacing all of the mechanisms in the door. However, they have no idea why the air temperature impacts the door. Regardless, the door is subject to overheating. These mechanisms are located in the same part of the care where the fire investigation is occurring.
Charge Hub mounted between trim panel on drivers side between second row and third row seat burned. I parked and smoke started rolling in van. Strong burning smell. Had to call Fire Dept.
When attempting to close the rear sliding doors, they attempt to latch and then fail. If it's hot out the motor will randomly go off and randomly operate. The harness and motors have been replaced and yet it continues.
IN WARM WEATHER MY DRIVERS SIDE POWER DOOR WILL NOT LATCH- THE MOTOR KEEPS CYCLING. ALSO, WHEN I HIT A BUMP THE CAR WILL CHIME, INTERIOR LIGHTS COME ON AND THE OPEN DOOR LIGHT WILL ENGAGE AD IF THE DOOR IS OPEN. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 YEARS AND I CANNOT FIND A SOLUTION. IT IS ONLY AN ISSUE A WARM WEATHER (ABOVE 70 DEGREES). CHRYLSER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE. I CONDUCTED AN INTERNET AEARCH AND IT APPEARS THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY OWNER WITH THIS PROBLEM.

VEHICLE HAS STOPPED ON ME WHILE DRIVING MULTIPLE TIMES, DOESN'T OTHERWISE SEEM TO DRIVE ROUGH, IT HAS ALSO STALLED ON ME WHILE DRIVING AND I MAKE "Y" TURNS OR AM DRIVING AND STOP AT A STOP SIGN. I PUT THE VAN BACK IN PARK, AND IT WILL START BACK UP. IT DOESN'T HAPPEN WHILE THE CAR IS IN PARK. SOMETIMES THERE IS A BURNING SMELL THAT IS SIMILAR TO THE SMELL OF AN AIRPLANE. 2. ONE MORNING BEFORE WORK WHEN I STARTED THE VAN I NOTICED THE BATTERY LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE DROVE FINE AND AFTER WORK,THE LIGHT WAS NOT ON ANYMORE. THE VAN SAT ALL WEEKEND AND WHEN I STARTED IT UP 2 DAYS LATER THE BATTERY LIGHT WAS AGAIN ILLUMINATED. SO I SCHEDULED IT TO BE SEEN AT THE DEALERSHIP. BY THE TIME THE DEALERSHIP COULD GET ME IN, THE BATTERY LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ON. THE DEALERSHIP RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND COULD FIND NO ISSUES SO I PICKED IT UP WITH NO RESOLUTION. TODAY HAS BEEN A WEEK SINCE THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT THE VAN, THE BATTERY LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SOLID FOR 3 DAYS NOW AND ON MY WAY TO DRIVE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THIS MORNING, IT COMPLETELY DIED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED THE REST OF THE WAY THERE. THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY DIED WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT 35MPH ROAD. ALL POWER STEERING AND INSTRUMENTS WERE LOST AND I COULDNT EVEN PUT THE VAN IN NEUTRAL OR GET THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. I AM CURRENTLY WAITING TO HEAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP AS TO WHAT THEY FOUND AS THE CAUSE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, A NOISE OCCURRED THAT WAS COMING THROUGH THE VEHICLE VENT DRIVER SIDE FRONT DOOR AND SMOKE WAS COMING THROUGH THE VENT SWITCH. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT ON THE DRIVER SIDE BY THE THIRD-ROW SEAT THE CIGARETTE POWER SUPPLY CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE VEHICLE'S ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUT DOWN ONE DAY UPON STARTING IN MY GARAGE. IT WAS STILL DRIVEBLE, BUT THERE WERE NO WORKING ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. I TOOK IT TO AN EXCELLENT INDEPENDENT SHOP AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, AND SAID IT NEEDED TO GO TO A CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER. CHRYSLER DETERMINED THAT THE BLIND SPOT SENSORS HAD FAILED, WHICH IS A $2000 REPAIR. WE INQUIRED AS TO WHETHER THE SENSORS COULD BE BYPASSED AND WERE TOLD THEY COULD NOT. WE WERE THEN TOLD, BOTH BY THE ORIGINAL SHOP AND THE CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER, THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN, MOST LIKELY WITHIN THE NEXT 50K MILES, DUE TO THE LOCATION OF THE SENSORS BEING UNDER THE BUMPER IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE REAR TIRES. IN THAT SPOT THEY TAKE THE BRUNT OF THE ELEMENTS KICKED UP BY THE TIRES, WHICH AFTER PROLONGED EXPOSURE CAUSES THEM TO FAIL. THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO BE CLEANED EFFECTIVELY BECAUSE THEY ARE LOCATED WITHIN A CAVITY THAT CANNOT BE REACHED. I THEN CALLED A BODY SHOP TO SEE WHETHER WE COULD ADD SOME SORT OF COVER TO THE CAVITY TO PREVENT THE DEBRIS FROM HITTING THE SENSORS, AND WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE. THE BODY SHOP, THE ORIGINAL SHOP AND THE CHRYSLER SERVICE CENTER ALL TOLD ME INDEPENDENTLY THAT THIS WAS A DESIGN FLAW AND A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE VEHICLE THAT EXISTED IN MODEL YEARS 2011-2016, AND WAS LATER CORRECTED WHEN CHRYSLER REDESIGNED THE TOWN AND COUNTRY INTO THE PACIFICA. WE LIVE ON A DIRT ROAD AND NOW HAVE A SIX YEAR OLD VEHICLE THAT IS A TICKING TIME BOMB FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE TO CONTINUE TO OCCUR FOR AS LONG AS WE OWN IT.

THE SENSORS ARE LOCATED IN THE REAR BUMPER WITH THE CONNECTOR/OPENING FACING THE REAR WHEELS WITH NO PROTECTION ALLOWING WATER AND SALT, ETC. TO PENETRATE THE SEAM ON THE SENSOR AS WELL AS THE CONNECTION TO THE HARNESS. IT CAUSED OUR BACK UP WARNING SYSTEM AND BLIND SPOT DETECTION SYSTEM TO STOP FUNCTIONING, AND SHORTED OUT THE SENSORS CAUSING THEM TO DRAIN THE BATTERY OVERNIGHT EVERY NIGHT (MAKING THE VEHICLE UNRELIABLE AND UNUSABLE), AND CAUSING THE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY IN THE PROCESS. IT TOOK THREE SHOPS, $1,500 AND TWO MONTHS JUST TO IDENTIFY THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM (AFTER REPLACING BOTH ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY). ONCE THE ROOT CAUSE WAS IDENTIFIED, THE DEALER OFFERED A REPAIR FOR A MERE $1,600 (REPLACING BOTH SENSORS, HARNESS AND MODULE) AND STATED THAT IT IS A COMMON ISSUE AND HAPPENS ON VIRTUALLY ALL OF THESE VEHICLES BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING PREVENTING WATER FROM ENTERING THESE SENSORS.

IT'S ALMOST AS IF THE BATTERY WAS STILL ON, BUT THEY HAD NO MECHANICAL FUNCTIONS. WE HAD THE VAN TAKEN TO TEQUESTA TIRE CO WHERE THEY DID A FULL INSPECTION. AFTER A FULL INSPECTION, THEY DETERMINED THE PROBLEM TO BE A POSSIBLE "FLUKE". AFTER ADDITIONAL RESEARCH ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDER ISSUE WITH OTHER T&C OWNERS. OTHER OWNERS SAY THEY HAVE NOT FOUND THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE AND SPEND A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MONEY WITH NO RESOLUTION OR CAUSE.

SERVICE CENTER DETAILED THE PROBLEM WAS A CORRODED BLIND SPOT SENSOR THAT CAUSED A BUS FAILURE AND SHORTED OUT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. AFTER DOING SEVERAL SEARCHES ONLINE THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE BLIND SPOT DETECTORS BECOMING CORRODED AND NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INDICATED THAT THE COMPUTER MODULE FAILED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY, WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND CAUSED A CRACK IN THE ENGINE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED NO REMEDY OTHER THAN HAVING THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED BY A DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WITHOUT WARNING THE ENGINE AND ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS (INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTING, RADIO, WIPERS, AC-HEAT/BLOWER, BRAKE ASSIST, STEERING ASSIST, AIRBAG, SPEED INDICATOR, ETC) ALL SHUT OFF. THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE CAR WAS TRAVELLING AT APPROXIMATELY 35-MILES PER HOUR ON A CITY STREET. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND IMMEDIATELY RESTART WITHOUT STOPPING. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. IF I WAS ON A POORLY LIT ROAD OR GOING AROUND A CORNER, OR AT A HIGHER SPEED, OR A LESS EXPERIENCED DRIVER, THIS COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN A FATAL ACCIDENT. THIS WAS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED TO CHRYSLER AND THYE REPORTED THE PROBLEM 'FIXED' LESS THAN 1-YEAR AGO (REPORTED TO CHRYSLER CORPORATE IN EARLY AUGUST 2017 AND SUPPOSEDLY FIXED BY A CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP AUGUST 11 2017). BOTH TRONCALLI (THE DEALERSHIP) & CHRYSLER REFUSED TO GIVE US THEIR FINDINGS CLAIMING PROPRIETARY INFORMATION AND HUNG UP ON US. THEN WE TRIED TO GO THROUGH MEDIATION, WE WERE TOLD THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS INVOLVED IN A WRECK THEY COULD NOT HELP US EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW THAT THE WRECK WAS CAUSED BY THE MALFUNCTION. LAST MONDAY (MAY 15, 2017) I WAS DRIVING AND REALIZED THAT NONE OF THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS ON MY VEHICLE WERE WORKING. IT BECAME SCARILY APPARENT WHEN I WENT TO HONK MY HORN AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE CONDITION ALSO AFFECTED ALL THE OTHER CONTROLS ON THE STEERING WHEEL, INCLUDING THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER THAT PROVIDES ME INFORMATION ON ALL THE VITAL STATISTICS OF THE VEHICLE. I USE THIS INFORMATION DAILY TO VERIFY THAT MY VEHICLE IS WELL MAINTAINED AND FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. WITHOUT IT, I DO NOT KNOW IF THERE ARE CONCERNS ABOUT MY VEHICLE'S ROAD WORTHINESS. LACKING JUST THESE TWO ITEMS (NOT TO MENTION LOSING THE OTHER CONTROLS ON THE STEERING WHEEL) CAUSED ME SERIOUS CONCERN ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY VEHICLE. THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS NOT THE HORN. RATHER, I WAS TOLD, THE HORN IS WIRED THROUGH THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH AND THAT SWITCH HAD FAILED. AFTER AGREEING TO HAVE THAT REPAIR DONE, I WAITED FOR THE WORK TO BE COMPLETED SO I COULD SAFELY DRIVE MY VEHICLE AGAIN. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. A COUPLE HOURS LATER, I RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP STATING THAT IT WASN'T THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, BUT RATHER, I WAS TOLD, THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A CLOCK SPRING THAT FED POWER TO THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH THAT PROVIDED POWER TO ACTIVATE THE HORN AND ALL THE OTHER CONTROLS THAT ARE NOT WORKING ON THE STEERING WHEEL. AND BY THE WAY, THE MANUFACTURER WILL NOT COVER ANY OF THE COSTS OF THIS SAFETY REPAIR. THIS SOUNDED STRANGE TO ME. HOW COULD SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AND SIMPLE AS A HORN BE SO COMPLEX AND CONVOLUTED? HAS HAPPENED WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, TURNING LEFT INTO AN INTERSECTION, AND DRIVING 35MPH STRAIGHT ON A CITY STREET. WEATHER HAS BEEN BOTH WARM AND COLD, VAN HAS BEEN WELL WARMED UP OR RECENTLY-STARTED; THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE A NOTICEABLE PATTERN. THE BEHAVIOR IS SIMILAR TO WHAT IT WOULD BE IF THE KEY FOB WAS TURNED FROM ON TO ACC -- E.G. THE RADIO IS STILL PLAYING BUT THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF. ALL POWER TO BRAKES AND STEERING IS LOST; I DON'T KNOW IF THE AIRBAGS ARE STILL FUNCTIONING AT THIS POINT. IN ALL FOUR CASES, THE CAR WAS EASILY RE-STARTED BY FIRST TURNING THE KEY FOB TO OFF, THEN STARTED AGAIN. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS IT CAN OCCUR SEEMINGLY AT ANY TIME, WITHOUT NOTICE.

I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO FORCE THE SEAT TO STOP WITH MY BACK, BUT I HAD TO USE A LOT MORE FORCE THAN MY KIDS COULD EVER HAVE DONE. THE SEATS HAVE ENOUGH FORCE TO SERIOUSLY INJURE A CHILD. THIS IS CLEARLY A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE, AS THE BUTTONS ARE IN A LOCATION THAT CAN BE ACCIDENTALLY PRESSED EASILY. ALSO, IF KIDS ARE IN THE BACK OF THE VAN AND ARE PLAYING AROUND, THEY COULD EASILY REACH AND PLAY WITH THE BUTTONS WHILE SITTING IN THE BACK. A SIMPLE BUTTON COVER OR CHILD LOCKOUT SWITCH WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE VAN IS ADVERTISED WITH THE PURPOSE OF USING THE REAR SEATS AS A TAIL-GATE ALTERNATIVE, BUT THIS SAFETY ISSUE MAKES THAT A DANGEROUS SOLUTION.

IT SEEMS LIKE A PART SHOULD BE AVAILABLE AFTER 6+ MONTHS GIVEN THAT NEWER MODELS OF THE SAME VEHICLE ARE NOT SUBJECT TO THE RECALL YET THE DESIGN HAS CHANGED VERY LITTLE. WHILE THIS MIGHT SEEM TO BE A MINOR ISSUE, IT WAS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO ISSUE A RECALL AND THE NHTSA SHOULD TAKE SOME ACTION TO ENSURE THAT CHRYSLER RESPONDS TO A RECALL IN A MORE TIMELY MANNER.

WHILE OUT OF TOWN (200 MILES FROM HOME) AND STOPPING FOR A BRAKE, I EXITED THE CAR. I RETRIEVED SOME PERSONAL BELONGINGS AND ACCIDENTALLY PUT MY HAND ON THE DOOR LOCK SWITCH. WHILE CLOSING THE DOOR, I NOTICED THAT THE KEY FOB WAS STILL ON THE CONSOLE, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE TO STOP THE DOOR FROM CLOSING. DESPITE STATEMENTS IN THE MANUAL THAT WITH A KEYLESS IGNITION SYSTEM, IT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE POSSIBLE TO LOCK THE DOOR WITH THE FOB INSIDE, THE DOORS REMAINED LOCKED. THE HORN DID NOT BEEP AND THE DOORS DID NOT UNLOCK IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MANUAL. EVENTUALLY, I LOCATED THE CHRYSLER SERVICE NUMBER THROUGH GOOGLE ON MY CELL PHONE AND CALLED FOR ASSISTANCE. CHRYSLER CALLED FOR A SERVICE TRUCK TO SEE WHETHER IT WAS POSSIBLE TO GAIN ENTRY INTO THE CAR. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR FROM LOCKING THE DOOR, A SERVICE TRUCK ARRIVED AND THE OPERATOR WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOOR. IF I HAD NOT HAD A CELL PHONE, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO WAY TO EITHER SEARCH OR MAKE A "HELP" CALL. MORE IMPORTANTLY, HAD OUR GRANDCHILDREN BEEN WITH US, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN LOCKED IN A RELATIVELY HOT, VEHICLE AND WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO BREAK A WINDOW SO THEY COULD ESCAPE. THE PERSON ON THE CHRYSLER LINE SEEMED TO HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE PROBLEM OTHER THAN TO CALL A SERVICE TRUCK. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I'VE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL DOOR LOCKING SYSTEM. PREVIOUSLY, I'D MADE 3 COMPLAINTS TO THE DEALER REGARDING A FAILURE OF THE DRIVER SLIDING DOOR TO LOCK. I EVEN SENT THE DEALER A VIDEO OF THE DOOR LOCK FAILING TO PROPERLY OPERATE (I STILL HAVE THE VIDEO AND EMAILS TO THE DEALER). CHRYSLER SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO WARN ALL PURCHASERS THAT THEIR SYSTEM, ON OCCASION, DOES NOT PREVENT THE DOORS FROM LOCKING WHILE THE FOB REMAINS IN THE CAR. WHILE DRIVING 68 MPH, MY HUSBAND'S KNEE HIT THE KEY, WHICH TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AS WELL AS ALL POWER TO THE MINIVAN. LUCKILY, TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT AND WE WERE ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE EMERGENCY LANE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE EXPERIENCE WAS EXTREMELY SCARY AND UNNERVING. I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THE RETURN TRIP HOME DUE TO THIS. THE KEY BEING ABLE TO COME LOOSE IS UNACCEPTABLE AND DOES NOT MAKE ONE FEEL SAFE WHILE DRIVING.
