The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that after taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the catalytic converter replaced, the vehicle stalled while driving at various speeds. There was no warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the contact had to have the vehicle towed to the residence on nine separate occasions. The vehicle was also towed to a dealer, where the PCM was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). The contact believed that a defect with the SKIM had caused the sudden stall with the security light flashing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 119,000.

I JUST READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE CURRENT GM RECALL IN THE USA TODAY NEWSPAPER. I'M NOT CONCERNED ABOUT IT BEING A SAFETY ISSUE AS I UNDERSTAND IT. I TRY NOT TO PULL IT OUT ANYMORE AS I THINK THAT WOULD LOOSEN IT UP MORE. I DON'T THINK IT EVER GOES OUT OF THE RUN CONDITION. I BELIEVE THERE ARE SEVERAL OEM'S (IF NOT ALL WHEN THE VEHICLE GETS OLD) THAT HAVE THIS ISSUE AND I ALSO BELIEVE THAT IT IS NOT A REAL SAFETY ISSUE. THE CUSTOMER KNOWS THEY HAVE AN ISSUE WHICH MAKES THEM SHARE ON THE LIABILITY. I JUST REPORTED THIS ON MY SATURN VUE AS WELL. THE KEY COMES OUT MUCH EASIER ON THE DODGE THAN ON THE SATURN. AN EXISTING NHTSA RECALL, 06V039000, EXISTS FOR 2006 DODGE DAKOTAS. "STATIC CAN DISABLE HEADLAMPS, TURN SIGNALS, & WINDSHIELD WIPERS". I HAVE A 2001 DAKOTA WITH THE SAME ISSUE. IT HAPPEN 2-5 TIMES PER YEAR. EVERYTHING WORKS AGAIN IF I CYCLE THE IGNITION, BUT THAT 'S SMALL COMFORT IF THE HEADLIGHTS GO OUT @ 75 MPH. DODGE HAS REFUSED TO FIX IT FOR FREE, SAYING THAT IT ONLY APPLIES TO 2006. IF IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE FOR A 2006, THEN IT IS A SAFETY RISK FOR 2001 TOO. THE KNOWN FIX IS TO "RE-FLASH" THE DASH, WHICH I ASSUME MEANS TO REPROGRAM THE DASH CONTROL PROCESSOR.

ON OCTOBER 1ST, 2010, MY CRUISE CONTROL WENT OUT. THINKING IT WAS WEAR AND TEAR, I WAS NOT IN A RUSH TO FIX IT. THEN THE HORN QUIT WORKING. WHEN THE AIR BAG LIGHT STARTED FLASHING WHEN I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL, I TOOK IT IN TO BE SERVICED. MY CONCERN IS THAT I HAVE THE SAME ISSUES AS A PREVIOUS RECALL, BUT MY VIN # IS NOT INCLUDED IN THAT PERIOD. MY MECHANIC SAYS IT IS THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THE PART IS EXPENSIVE. LOOKING ONLINE, IT APPEARS DODGE IS NOT MAKING GOOD. MY VIN # MATCHES THE OTHER COMPLAINTS. AFTER CONTACTING DODGE (11/10/10), I WAS OFFERED A 50% REFUND ON REPAIR WORK. THIS SAYS TO ME THAT THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH OTHER MODELS/YEAR. WHEN HE GOT HOME, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WENT HAYWIRE, THE HORN CONTINUED TO HONK, THE DOOR LOCKS BEGAN LOCKING AND UNLOCKING, AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON. I WAS TOLD THAT RECALLS EXISTED ON SEVERAL DODGE VEHICLES BUT NOT ONE OF THEM SPECIFIED OUR TRUCK. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY JUST SAID IT WAS NOT MY TRUCK SO I WAS OUT OF LUCK. I THEN DID SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ON-LINE AND FOUND SEVERAL FORUMS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THIS YEAR OF TRUCK, PLUS SEVERAL OTHERS, AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY HELP FROM DODGE EITHER. THIS IS A REALLY SERIOUS MALFUNCTION AND COULD OF CAUSE A VERY BAD ACCIDENT. I JUST NEED DODGE TO OWN UP TO THE PROBLEM AND REIMBURSE US FOR THE REPAIRS WE HAD. MY WIFE DROVE MY 2001 DODGE DAKOTA SPORT DURING THE SNOW DAYS AND COMPLAINED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD FLICKER. OVER A FEW WEEKS, I STARTED TO NOTICE THAT THEY WOULD FLICKER, ALONG WITH THE DASH LIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS, DOME LIGHT, AND BRAKE LIGHTS. THEN, AS I HAD NOT BEEN DRIVING AT NIGHT MUCH, I HAD MY 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH ME COMING FROM RICHMOND TO CONNERSVILLE, IN, AND THIS BECAME SEVERE WHILE IT WAS RAINING WITH FOG. ALL LIGHTS WOULD GO OFF AND COME BACK ON, THEY WOULD ALSO GO OFF EVERYTHING THE DELAYED WIPERS WOULD GO WORK. THEN THE DELAYED WIPERS WOULD GO EVERYTIME THE LIGHTS WOULD FLICKER. AS THE DODGE DEALER COULD NOT NARROW THE PROBLEM DOWN WITHOUT SPENDING MUCH MONEY, I TRIED TO TROUBLESHOOT MYSELF SINCE I DID NOT BELIEVE THE PROBLEM WAS WHAT THEY INSTRUCTED IT MAY BE. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, IT ENDED UP BEING WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS, THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) OR CENTRAL TIMING MODULE (CTM) OR TIME AND ALARM MODULE WHICH ARE ALL THE SAME THING BUT THE NAME HAS CHANGED AT TIMES. THIS MODULE CONTROLS THE LIGHTS, WIPERS, KEYLESS ENTRY, ETC. I HAVE SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS IN DODGE FORUMS AND HAVE SEEN WHERE DODGE KNOWS THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM (MAYBE THAT'S WHY THEY KEEP RENAMING THE DEVICE). MY TRUCK HAS 31000 MILES AND HAS BEEN HAVING MYSTERIOUS INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN AUG 2001. ORIGINALLY IT WAS LIMITED TO THE DOOR LOCKS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING BY THEMSELVES AT ALL TIMES - WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING, AND WHEN IT IS NOT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN AT LEAST TWO TIMES, AND BOTH TIMES THE DEALER SAID THEY COULD NOT "DUPLICATE" THE PROBLEM, AND THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED INTERMITTENTLY OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS UNTIL THIS MONTH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT COMPLETELY HAYWIRE - THE LIGHTS , LOCKS, WIPERS, DASH LIGHTS ALL QUIT WORKING, AND THE 4WD SERVICE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT WOULD NOT GO INTO 4WD (ALL OF THIS CONVENIENTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRED 4 MONTHS AGO). I TOOK THE TRUCK IN AND THEY SAID THE "CONTROL MODULE" WAS BAD AND THAT IT WOULD COST $500 TO FIX. WHEN I EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS JUST ANOTHER IN A SERIES OF ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT HAVE BEEN OCCURRING THROUGHOUT THE WARRANTY PERIOD, AND THAT I THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY, I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NO WAY TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM, AND THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. MY 2001 DODGE DAKOTA TRUCK HAS EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE OF ITS POWER CONTROL MODULE (PCM) NOT ONCE BUT TWICE IN 2004. THE ORIGINAL UNIT FAILED 57,500 MILES AND THE SECOND UNIT FAILED AT JUST 7,000 MILES. PCM FAILURE MEANS THAT ELECTRIC POWER IS CUT UNEXPECTEDLY TO THE ENGINE LEADING TO ENGINE FAILURE. IN MY CASE THIS HAPPENED ONCE ON A NARROW HILLY ROADWAY AND THE SECOND TIME IN THE FAST LANE OF A FREEWAY. SUCH FAILURE DO NOT PROVIDE WARNINGS AND HAPPEN SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY. IN BOTH CASES LOOSING POWER ALSO MEANT LOOSING BRAKING AND POWER STEERING. WHILE NEITHER INCIDENT RESULTING IN ACCIDENTS FOR ME, THEY COULD EASILY HAVE (PART LUCK & PART SKILL). YET I HAVE SEEN LITTLE REGARDING THIS MATTER. WHAT IS SO SINISTER ABOUT THIS IS THAT THE "BUG" IS DIFFICULT TO TRACE BECAUSE IT RE-APPEARS ONLY RANDOMLY (INITIALLY I THOUGHT THAT I NEEDED A TUNE-UP OR HAD RECEIVED BAD BATCH OF FUEL). THERE IS NO MAINTENANCE REQUIRED OF THIS UNIT AND IT HAS A WARRANTY OF 8/80,000. I HAVE WRITTEN TO DODGE REGARDING THIS MATTER REQUESTING, AMONG OTHER THINGS, AN EXPLANATION OF WHY THESE UNITS FAILED AND THE HAZARDS SUCH FAILURES PLACE THE DRIVER AND FELLOW MOTORISTS INTO. THE MANUFACTURER HAS RESPONDED BUT ONLY IN REGARD TO THE MATTER OF REIMBURSEMENT FOR CAR RENTAL RELATED TO THE SECOND INCIDENT ABOVE WHERE I WAS ON A TRIP. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, AND WITH ONLY 49000 MILES ON THE TRUCK CURRENTLY, THE FOLLOWING FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED: (1) (FROM FEBRUARY 2004 TO PRESENT) THE FACTORY-INSTALLED EXTERNAL WIRING HARNESS (FOR TOWING A TRAILER) MELTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT, SHORTING OUT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. (2) BRAKES WOULD PULSATE ANYTIME BRAKES WERE APPLIED. DEALER ATTRIBUTED THIS TO WARPING OF ROTORS AND REPLACED PADS AND TURNED THE ROTORS. DEALER NOTED A SPRING ON DRIVER-SIDE CALIPER WAS MISSING AND REPLACED IT AS WELL. (3) THE HEATER/AC CONTROLS FAILED. (4) WENT FOR STATE INSPECTION AND INSPECTOR FAILED TRUCK DUE TO FAILURE OF UPPER BALL JOINTS AND BRAKES. THE SAME BRAKES I JUST HAD FIXED IN FEBRUARY. PREMATURE FAILURE OF BALL JOINTS ATTRIBUTED TO "TYPICAL PROBLEM FOR DAKOTAS/DURANGOS". WELL IF IT'S TYPICAL, WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL?? THE DEALER HAD NO ANSWERS. FAILURE WAS A RESULT OF CALIPERS NOT RELEASING PROPERLY CAUSING THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS TO "GLAZE". DEALER OPTED TO PICK UP THE TAB FOR THE NEW ROTORS AND THE NEW PADS, ONLY AT MY REQUEST. THE NEW CALIPERS AND BRAKE LINES STILL COST ME $800. AGAIN I'M WONDERING WHY I'M PAYING FOR SO MUCH ON A TRUCK THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD WITH ONLY 49000 MILES. (5) UNKNOWN PROBLEM AT STARTUP WHEN ENGINE IS COLD. PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SPUTTER. PROBLEM EXISTS UNTIL ENGINE IS WARM THEN GOES AWAY. TWO DODGE DEALERSHIPS AND NEITHER CAN FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM AS THERE IS NO COMPUTER ERROR CODE COMING UP. ALL ITEMS MENTIONED WERE PAID FOR BY ME UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. HAD ANY OF THESE ISSUES BEEN A RESULT OF NEGLIGENCE, OR LOTS OF MILEAGE, OR HAD THE DODGE DEALERSHIP(S) OPTED TO PAY FOR ITEMS THAT WERE THE OBVIOUS RESULT OF POOR CRAFTSMANSHIP, I WOULDN'T COMPLAIN. I WAS TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS AT THE DODGE DEALERSHIP THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH DAKOTA'S AND DURANGOS AND THAT THE BALL JOINTS USED ON THOSE TWO CARS WERE VERY WEAK AND NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE VEHICLE.*AK
THE VEHICLE IS A 2001 DODGE DAKOTA QUAD CAB EQUIPPED WITH A FACTORY TOWING PACKAGE. ON MARCH 12, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON I-215 PULLING A TRAILER. I SMELLED SOMETHING BURNING, THEN THE CABIN FILLED WITH SMOKE. THE TURN SIGNALS, BRAKE LIGHT, AND EMERGENCY FLASHER CEASED OPERATING. A COMBINATION FLASHER UNIT HAD FAILED AND BURNED, WITH THE PLASTIC CASE PARTIALLY MELTED. THE HEAT HAD DAMAGED THE COMBINATION SWITCH, WHICH ALSO FAILED, AND THE PLUG INTO THE WIRING HARNESS WAS ALSO PARTIALLY MELTED. THE DODGE DEALER CHANGED THE FAILED COMPONENTS, AND THEY FAILED AGAIN, THIS TIME WITH NO TRAILER ATTACHED. THE DEALER FINALLY ATTRIBUTED THE FAILURES TO A SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE WIRING INSTALLED BY THE FACTORY WHICH CONNECTED THE FACTORY INSTALLED TRAILER SOCKET TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. I HAVE ADVISED DODGE OF THE PROBLEM, AND THEY MAINTAIN THAT THEIR WIRING WAS NOT DEFECTIVE BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT THE SHORT ORIGINATED IN THE TRAILER WIRING. THEY MADE THIS DETERMINATION WITHOUT EXAMINING THE TRAILER. EVEN IF THE SHORT DID IN FACT START IN THE TRAILER, THE FACTORY DESIGNED AND INSTALLED WIRING HARNESS SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE SHORT FROM DESTROYING THESE VITAL SAFETY COMPONENTS. THE FREEWAY I WAS ON WHEN THE FIRE OCCURRED WAS PACKED WITH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, AND IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT MAKING MY WAY TO SAFETY PULLING A TRAILER WITHOUT THE USE OF THE SIGNAL LIGHTS. *JB

REGIONAL SERVICE MANAGER IN KANSAS INSISTED THE PROBLEM WAS DEFECTIVE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. 17 DAYS LATER AND 3 DIFFERENT THROTTLE POSITION SENSORS PLUS OTHER PARTS TRIED THE REGINAL MANAGER ALLOWED THE DEALERSHIP TO REPLACE WIRING HARNESS. DODGE SENT TO THEM THE WRONG WIRING HARNESS AND TRUCK MOTOR HAD TO BE TORN DOWN AGAIN TO INSTALL CORRECT WIRING HARNESS. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN IN IOWA IN SHOPT 19 DAYS AND I LIVE IN TX. ON 12-3 I WAS NOTIFIED THE TRUCK WAS FIXED AS DODGE TOLD THE DEALERSHIP TO GET THE TRUCK OUT OF THEIR SHOP. I DROVE OVER 1,000 MILES AGAIN TO PICK THE TRUCK UP TO FIND IT TORN DOWN AGAIN. THEY HAVE NOW NOTIFIED ME THE TRUCK IS FIXED, BUT THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW IF IT IS REEALLY FIXED AND WON'T KNOW UNTIL BACK ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS.
