I WAS GETTING GAS AND AS I PULLED OUT OF THE GAS STATION I WAS GETTING A LOAD TICKING NOISE. TO FIND OUT LATER MY 5.7 HIMI LIFTER AND CAM SHAFTS NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I GET A REGULAR OIL CHANGE AND FILTER CHANGE. I AM NOT SURE WHY THIS IS HAPPENING BUT I DID SEE THAT THIS IS NORMAL AND 5.7 HIMIS DODGE DURANGOS AND NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY IT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED. I'M A MOTHER OF 3 LITTLE ONES AND I'M TERRIFIED WE CAN GET STRANDED IF MY ENGINE DECIDES TO GO OUT DUE TO THIS ISSUE.

1. RECALL FAILED TO REPAIR AIR BAG FAILURE. CURRENTLY - AIRBAGS ARE NOT FUNCTIONAL (DASH WARNING LIGHT). 2. AT APPROXIMATELY 72,000 MILES - VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHOW SIGNS OF RUST THROUGH AT BOTH REAR QUARTER PANELS AND BOTH ROCKER PANELS. BY 85000 MILES - COMPLETE BODY RUST THROUGH FAILURE WAS IRREPARABLE - VEHICLE WAS MAINTAINED EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN. 3. AT 100000 MILES - NOTED BY WAY OF MECHANIC THAT THE ENGINE WAS 'SLUDGED UP' TO THE POINT THAT THE VALVE TRAIN WAS STARVED OF LUBRICATION AND SUBSEQUENTLY - THE ENGINE HAS ENCOUNTERED WHAT APPEARS TO BE A TOTAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. VALVES, LASH ADJUSTER, PISTON ROD OR BEARINGS MAY ALL BE DESTROYED DIRECTLY DUE TO POOR DESIGN AND LOW QUALITY COMPONENTS FROM FCA. THERE ARE HUNDREDS (THOUSANDS) OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ACROSS MULTIPLE MEDIA REGARDING THIS 'FAMILIAR' DODGE ENGINE BREAKDOWN. FCA - OF COURSE - DENIES CULPABILITY CITING POOR USER MAINTENANCE. I HAVE RECORDS OF ALL OIL CHANGES FOR THE SUBJECT VEHICLE AT 3000 MILE INTERVALS CONSISTENTLY FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE (5/2004), I SAY - 'FCA? TIME TO OWN UP TO THIS PROBLEM AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. WHENEVER IT RAINED OR SNOWED, WATER LEAKED INTO THE INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE HOOD. THE WATER ENTERED THE MOTOR AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL AND THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE WATER WAS LEAKING INTO THE MOTOR AND THE PISTONS, WHICH CAUSED THEM TO FAIL. AS A RESULT, THE MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200,000.

GAS AND BODY ISSUES: WHEN YOU GO TO FILL UP THE GAS SPRAYS OUT. I HAVE A VERT STRONG SMELL OF GAS AND THE LOWER FINDER BY THE WHEEL WELL HAS RUSTED BADLY. MOTOR: WHENEVER THERE IS HEAVY RAIN, MY CAR WILL STOP RUNNING. MOST RECENTLY WHEN I TURN ON THE AC OR HEATER THE CAR STALLS. I ALSO JUST RECENTLY HAD TO CHANGE OUT A MANIFOLD WHICH CAUSED ANOTHER SET OF PROBLEMS. I OWNED A DURANGO BEFORE THIS ONE AND LOVED IT. THIS ONE HAS CHANGED MY MIND AND I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER.

COWL SCREEN HAS WATER LEAKING ON THE ENGINE WHEN IT RAINS. IT CAUSED MY TRUCK TO DRIVE SHAKY AND THEN CUT OFF. I ALMOST GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT. IT STALLED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF ME DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. WHY ISN'T THERE ANY RECALLS FOR THIS, I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT BUT NOTHING IS GETTING DONE. I GUESS IT WOULD TAKE FOR SOME PEOPLE TO LOSE THEIR LIFE BEHIND THE WHEEL BEFORE IT GET FIXED. I ALWAYS THOUGHT DODGE WAS THE BEST VEHICLE BUT I AM NOW SECOND GUESSING MYSELF AND WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER DODGE VEHICLE AGAIN IF THIS PROBLEM ISN'T FIXED. APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS AGO NOTED SEVERE RUST THROUGH BEGINNING ON BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE ROCKER PANELS AND REAR QUARTER PANELS/WHEEL WELLS. ESTIMATE AT THAT TIME FOR FULL REPAIR WAS OVER $4000 DUE TO EXTENT OF RUST. RUST AFFECTS ROCKER PANELS, DRIVER COMPARTMENT FLOOR AT DOOR ENTRY POINTS AND BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER QUARTER PANELS. DEALERSHIP BODY SHOT PERSONNEL NOTED THAT 'THESE DURANGO'S AND DAKOTAS ALL RUST OUT BAD - AND IT HAPPENS FAST'. VERY TELLING. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN FULLY MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT OWNERSHIP AND HAS BEEN GARAGED CONTINUALLY. WE DO LIVE IN THE 'RUST-BELT' AREA - BUT WE ARE IN NO WAY PLEASED WITH THE CONDITION OF THIS VEHICLE. TO DATE - THE RUST IS EXPANDING TO MOST LOWER BODY PARTS EXPOSED TO WEATHER AND THE SPEED AT WHICH ITS - LITERALLY - DISINTEGRATING IS RIDICULOUS. THE REPAIR NOW WILL COST NEARLY $6000 AND WE SIMPLY DO NOT FEEL IT IS WORTH DOING. CAR HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT BELOW THE GAS CAP AS WHAT HAS BECOME A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN QUOTED IN EXCESS OF $4000 TO FIX THIS GIVEN THE SEVERITY OF THE DAMAGE AND LABOR REQUIRED TO FIX THIS. IT APPEARS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS YEAR SINCE I HAVE PERSONALLY SEEN 11 EXACT SAME VEHICLES YEARS WITH THE SAME RUST PROBLEM. THIS COUPLED WITH THE SAME RUST ISSUE ARISING ON THE HATCHBACK WHICH WAS SAID DUE TO A FAULTY DRAIN HOLE BEING TAPED OVER BY DEALER/MANUFACTURER WHICH NOTHING COULD BE DONE. THE OVERALL VEHICLE BODY IS A PERFECT SHAPE OUTSIDE THE RUST PROBLEMS BELOW THE GAS CAP AND THE RUST THROUGHOUT THE HATCHBACK. GIVEN THE COMMONALITY OF THIS PROBLEM IT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. *TR

THE FAILURE WAS RECURRING AND ON SOME OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE WOULD HESITATE TO ENGAGE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE EXTERIOR BODY AND THE UNDERCARRIAGE EXHIBITED EXTENSIVE RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A ROD HAD PENETRATED AND DAMAGED THE ENGINE, WHICH WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. MY TRUCK WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY, IT WAS RAINING AND THEN THE LIGHTS STARTED FLICKERING WITHOUT THE KEYS BEING IN THE IGNITION. VEHICLE WAS RUNNING FINE UNTIL STORM CAME THROUGH DUMPING CONTINUOUS RAIN ON VEHICLE. I WENT TO MOVE THE VEHICLE LATER THAT DAY AND NOTICED STANDING WATER ON DRIVERS SIDE FLOORBOARD/CARPET. IT WAS SOAKED! I WENT TO START THE ENGINE IT DIDN'T RESPOND INITIALLY SO I TURNED IGNITION BACKWARDS (OFF DIRECTION) AND TRIED TO RESTART. AT THAT MOMENT IT STARTED VERY ROUGH AND MADE A LOUD NOISE FROM THE ENGINE AND CONTINUALLY DOES SO WHENEVER IT IS STARTED NOW. I CAN'T AND DON'T DRIVE IT. LOOKING CLOSER UNDER THE HOOD APPARENTLY WATER IS GETTING INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHEN IT RAINS. THE BLACK MATERIAL LINING UNDER THE HOOD WAS SOAKED ALSO. ON THE ENGINE THERE WERE WATER DROPLETS AND MOST COMPONENTS OF THE ENGINE HAD DRIED WATER MARKS/STREAKS THROUGHOUT THE COMPARTMENT.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WATER PENETRATED THE WINDSHIELD AREA WHENEVER IT WOULD RAIN. THE WATER WOULD THEN LEAK ONTO THE COWL PANEL AND INTO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN FOR REPAIRS AND BOTH THE COWL PANEL AND ENGINE WAS REPLACED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 127,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 181,000.

AFTER A SNOW STORM AND THE SNOW MELTED, WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO START IT, THE STARTER WAS GRINDING. THE ENGINE WAS HYDROLOCKED AND BROKE THE CONNECTING ROD FOR #3 CYLINDER. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION TURNED UP A TECH BULLETIN (NOT MANDATORY RECALL) TO REPLACE COWL AT THE BASE OF THE WINDSHIELD DUE TO WATER LEAKAGE ONTO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE WHICH CAN CAUSE MISFIRING. I NEVER RECEIVED NOTICE OF THIS TECH BULLETIN OR THE POTENTIAL CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES OF NOT IMPLEMENTING IT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THE DEFECTIVE COWL COULD CAUSE TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE IN THE TECH BULLETIN. THE MELTING SNOW SEEPED INTO THE #3 CYLINDER, POSSIBLY FROM A FAILED INTAKE MANIFOLD SEAL OR WARPED INTAKE MANIFOLD (YET TO BE DETERMINED), AND CAUSED HYDROLOCK. I FOUND EVIDENCE OF A SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER IN THE OIL PAN WHICH LEAKED FROM #3 CYLINDER. I ALSO FOUND WATER UNDER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEAR THE #3 CYLINDER. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE A BROKEN CONNECTING ROD USUALLY PUNCHES A HOLE IN THE BLOCK CAUSING OIL TO SPILL ON THE ROAD! THIS WAS A 5.7L HEMI. THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE COMPLETELY REBUILT. *TR

NOTICED OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS WATER WHEN IT RAINS THAT IT IS ACCUMULATING ON TOP OF THE ENGINE. NOTICED THE ENGINE FELT LIKE IT HAD A MISS FIRE ON A CYLINDER. SEAL FROM WINDSHIELD COWL IS NO LONGER MAKING A POSITIVE SEAL AND WATER IS DRIPPING DOWN ONTO THE TOP OF THE ENGINE AND ALSO INTO THE SPARK PLUGS. USING YOU TUBE THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS ISSUE WHICH IN TURN HAS RESULTED IN WHAT IS CALLED HYRO-LOC OF THE ENGINE WHICH IS CAUSING PUSH RODS TO BREAK AND CAUSING THE ENGINE TO COMPLETELY FAIL, AS IN MY CASE PUSHING A ROD THRU THE BLOCK OF THE ENGINE SPILLING OIL OUT ON TO THE STREET. SHUTTING DOWN THE ENGINE LOOSING ALL POWER TO STEER AND CONTROL VEHICLE. LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON A MAIN HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT 60MPH AS THIS COULD HAVE BEEN AS DISASTROUS ACCIDENT.THERE SHOULD BE SOME TYPE OF RECALL ON THE WATER PROBLEM AND THIS ENGINE CATASTROPHE RESULTING FORM THIS PROBLEM, AS OF TODAY DODGE/CHRYSLER HAS NO KNOWN ISSUE OF THIS SORT, WHICH IS HARD TO BELIEVE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, SHE NOTICED A BURNING ODOR AND SMOKE STARTED POURING INTO THE VEHICLE. SHE MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE HAPPENED AS A RESULT OF THE RAIN LEAKING INTO THE COMPUTER PANEL AND WIRES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BEFORE THE FAILURE OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED FOR RECALL 07V092000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT PANEL) AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY TO APPLIED THE REMEDY SINCE IT DID NOT QUALIFY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED NEW SPARK PLUGS. THE REMEDY DID NOT REPAIR THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT HAD TO TAKE THE VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. A RESERVOIR WAS INSTALLED WHICH REPAIRED THE FAILURE TEMPORARILY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN DUE TO WATER LEAKING INTO THE HOOD AND DAMAGING A COIL LOCATED NEAR THE BATTERY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 140,000.

DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IF THE REAR WINDOWS ARE ROLLED DOWN THE CAR BEGINS TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY TO THE POINT WHERE THE DOORS FEEL AS IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE PULLED OFF. ON MARCH 2, 2007 I GOT IN MY 2004 DODGE DURANGO LIMITED (HEMI) TO TAKE MY KIDS TO SCHOOL, I NOTICED MY RADIO HAD NO SOUND, THE POWER CAME ON, BUT NO SOUND AT ALL WAS HEARD. AFTER I DROVE ABOUT 1/2 OF A MILE THE SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER GAUGES STARTED ACTING ERRATIC, JUMPING UP AND DOWN, THE RADIO CAME BACK ON FOR A FEW SECONDS, THEN CUT OUT AGAIN. THE OVERHEAD TEMP CONTROL WAS JUMPING FROM 54 DEGREES TO NEGATIVE 40!. MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON AS WELL AS THE ETC LIGHT. AFTER DROPPING MY KIDS AT SCHOOL, I HAVE NOT DROVE THIS TRUCK, WITH LESS THAN 41000 MILES. AFTER READING THAT FIRES HAVE STARTED IN MANY OTHER 2004 DURANGO'S, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY MY TRUCK HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED A RECALL, WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR? I CAN NOT PUT MY KIDS IN THIS TRUCK. IN OCTOBER 2006 MY TRUCK WAS LEAKING FROM ABOVE MY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR (34713 MILES), WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD TO RE-SEAL SEAMS ABOVE MY DOOR AS WELL AS OTHER POSSIBLE AREAS WATER COULD BE GETTING IN, ONE WEEK LATER MY TRUCK STARTED STALLING AT STOP SIGNS, MY HUSBAND TOOK IT DO THE DEALER AGAIN (35050 MILES) THE DEALER SCHAEFER AND STROHMINGER DODGE WHITEMARSH OF COURSE TELLS US THAT IT IS LACK OF MAINTENANCE (NOT TRUE) AND WE NEED THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED ($169.00 AND A TUNE UP $182.00) YET JUST THE WEEK BEFORE WHEN MY TRUCK WAS THERE THEY DID THE MULTI-POINT INSPECTION REPORT AND CHECKED THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. AFTER DOING RESEARCH I FOUND OUT THE ISSUE WITH THE LEAK ABOVE MY DOOR WAS SENT OUT AS A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTIFICATION NO. D10, DATED MARCH 2004, WHY DIDN'T I GET THIS NOTIFICATION? BETTER YET, WHY DIDN'T THE DEALER FIX THIS BEFORE I BOUGHT IT IN SEPT. 04? WHAT GOOD IS THE WARRANTY FROM THEM WHEN EVERYTHING IS DENIED? I WILL NEVER BUY A DODGE/CHRYSLER VEHICLE AGAIN. DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATES THAT THERE IS A BLIND SPOT ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. NOT EVEN MAKING MY FIRST PAYMENT YET, MY CAR HAS SEEN THE SHOP SEVERAL TIMES AND STILL NOT FIXED. MY BRAKE LINE WAS "CROSS TREADED" IN THE ASSEMBLY LINE. THERE FOR I HAD VERY LITTLE BRAKE FLUID LEFT (ONLY 2 WEEKS AFTER BUYING THE CAR) AND THE FLUID LEAKED ON MY RIM WHICH NOW HAS TO BE REPLACED BUT IS ON BACK ORDER TILL "WHENEVER". I WAS WITH OUT MY NEW CAR FOR OVER A WEEK FOR THIS PROBLEM. THEN I HAVE TO GET THE BUMPER REPLACED DUE TO FADING WHICH THE SERVICE DEPT SAYS HAS HAPPENED TO SEVERAL DURANGO'S AND PT CRUISERS. THIS WILL BE A 2-3 DAY PROCESS ONCE CHRYSLER FIGURES OUT HOW THEY ARE GOING TO REPAIR SINCE THEY HAVE STOPPED REPLACING. (THIS WILL BE MORE TIME WITH OUT MY NEW CAR.) THEN IT WAS IN THE SHOP BECAUSE THE RADIATOR CAP WAS NOT PUT ON CORRECTLY DURING ASSEMBLY AND IT LOOSENED. ALL THE COOLENT LEAKED AND CAUSED THE CAR TO OVERHEAT. LAST BUT NOT LEAST THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND THEY SAID THAT THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE IMPACT SENSOR SWITCH...WHICH YOU GUESSED IT... IS ON BACKORDER. THIS MIGHT OR MIGHT NOT BE THE PROBLEM BUT THEY CAN'T GO ANY FURTHER UNTIL THIS IS CHANGED OUT. SO ONCE AGAIN I WILL BE WITH OUT MY CAR. I HAVE TALKED TO ANOTHER SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY WARNED ME THAT I SHOULDN'T BE DRIVING THIS CAR BECAUSE WITH OUT THE IMPACT SENSOR SWITCH, THE AIRBAGS WON'T DEPLOY ON IMACT. THIS CAR HAS BEEN TOO MUCH TROUBLE AND NOT WORTH THE HASSLE.THIS IS MY FIRST DODGE AND I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND BUYING ONE. I UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES THERE ARE JUST BAD APPLES IN THE BUNCH, BUT CHRYSLER AND THE DEALERSHIP HASN'T MADE EFFORTS TO FIX PROBLEMS. I JUST GET THE TYPICAL RUN AROUND.

IF YOU ARE DRIVING WITH THE BACK WINDOW/WINDOWS DOWN AND THE FRONT UP, THERE IS A PULSATING PRESSURE FROM AIRFLOW THAT MAKES YOUR EARDRUMS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO POP.
