While stopped at a stop sign, the passenger headrest airbag deployed.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed low speed through a parking area, the passenger's side seat headrest deployed inadvertently and hit the passenger in the back of the head. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by a dealer or an independent mechanic. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Chrysler Campaign Number: X88. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

Sitting at the light and driver side active head restraint deployed into my head.
Passenger side active headrest deployed without accident while sitting in driveway no one in or around vehicle and also not running.
The passenger head restraint deployed while driving on a smooth road at about 30 mph. No crash or unusual road conditions.
Sitting at drive through and driver headrest exploded and hit me in the back of the head. Thank God I was not moving at the time and my car was in park or I may have wrecked! Startled me and I was dazed and confused because I couldn’t figure out what had happened! This just happened a few hours ago so I have not been able to report it or have it checked out. I did take several pictures. There were no warnings or anything and it just happened as I was sitting there! If I had been driving, it could have been catastrophic! My neck is sore and I have a headache.

DRIVERSIDE FRONT HEADREST JUST POPPED FOR NO REASON. LOADING KIDS IN SUV AND IT JUST POPPED, MARCH 8TH 2023 NO REASON OR EXPLINATION I CONTACTED CRYSLER CORP THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP ME AND THAT ITS NOT COVERED THEY CAN GIVE A PRICE ON A NEW HEADREST
The passenger head rest popped/exploded and juts forward and will not close back. I was advised that it is an airbag recall issue. However after checking my vin nothing is shown listed here. On a google search it says there is a ten year unlimited mile recall.
Service airbag system, service antilock brakes, service transmission, service shifter suddenly appear. Ater pulling over and turning it off the car went dead. Just spent $1500 for a new computer and two days later I have service airbag system. I have videos of the chaos. If this car is in an accident the airbags will not go off and passengers will be unprotected. The electrical issues in this car are beyond comprehension. Chrysler needs to take responsibility before it causes a catastrophic injury. The behavior of this vehicle is unacceptable and unsafe.
The contact's wife owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated while his daughter was driving 65-70 MPH, she heard a loud popping sound. The contact's daughter veered to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle but could not determine the cause of the popping sound. Upon returning inside the vehicle, the contact's daughter noticed that the front passenger's side headrest had independently deployed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact's daughter continued to drive the vehicle. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In October 2014, a recall was called for some 2014 Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees because a electrical issue where the air bag light intermittently comes on and turns off repeatedly. My vehicle was not included but it is having the same issue which almost seems like a short in wiring. This is an issue that widely discussed in the Durango chat as other people are told as well that their 2014 is not included but they have the same issue.
Front passenger’s headrest airbag deployed while parked. Nothing hit us, my daughter was in the seat.
The active head restraint system deployed on passenger side while sitting at a traffic light with no warning or impact to another vehicle. I was the passenger when the headrest blew out causing my head to jerk forward and straining my neck. I have an appointment scheduled at the Dodge dealership in Thousand Oaks, CA on 11/5/2021 at 9:30am. No warning lamps or systems whatsoever.
The headrest deployed and has a broken pin and I am unable to put it back in place.
While stopped at a red light, the headrest exploded and hit me in the back of the head. The soft part popped forward with force away from the hard plastic back.
Passenger headrest deployed randomly and unexpectedly without warning during normal forward vehicle operation striking the passenger in the head. Vehicle was not in traffic or in contact with any other vehicle or object. Vehicle has no accident history or air bag deployment history. No warning lights and no warning prior to deployment. Owner is on summer holiday in Colorado. Owner contacted local Colorado dealer and was advised the headrest is not a repairable item and as such will require replacement. Dealer estimated repairs to be approximately $1,100. Part will need to be ordered and dealer could not estimate ETA for the part.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET AND 1 VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME ABOUT 3 TO 4 CAR LENGTHS. THE WOMAN WAS GOING SAME SPEED, I LOOKED TO MY RIGHT TO ASSURE A DOG WAS NOT GOING TO RUN INTO THE STRRET, 2 SECONDS, AN LOOKED BACK AT ROAD AND PERSON IN FRONT HAD STOPPED, WITH NO TURN SIGNAL ON AND NO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I FIRMLY APPLIED BRAKES AND TRIED TO VEER AROUND THE CAR BUT THERE WAS NOT SUFFICIENT SPACE AND HIT THE BACK OF CAR SO HARD IT TOSSED AROUND ITEMS IN THE CAR BREAKING FRONT WINDSHIELD, KNOCKING OFF MY GLASSES. THE FORCE WAS SO HARD IT THRUST MY BODY HARD ONTO STEERING WHEEL AND LEG INTO DASH. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY FOR DRIVER OR PASSENGER. THE SEAT BELT DID NOT HOLD MY BODY TO THE SEAT. I HAVE A VERY SERIOUS CONTUSION ON LEFT LEG WHERE PUTTING WEIGHT ON THE LEG IS TERRIBLE PAIN. I HAVE A FRACTURED STURNUM(CHESTBONE) MAKING BREATHING, WALKING, GETTING UP OR DOWN, REACHING FOR SOMETHING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND EXTREMELY PAINFUL. NOW I DONT KNOW WHAT TO BELIEVE, BUT I DO KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG AS EITHER THE AIRBAG OR SEAT BELT SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED ME FROM BEING THRUST FORWARD SO HARD TO FRACTURE MY STERNUM AND CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO LEFT KNEE. I WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION AS TO WHY THE AIRBAG AND SEATBELT DID NOT WORK PROPERLY. I DONT BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE IS SAFE. PLEASE CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION.

IF WE ARE NOW IN A COLLISION PRIOR TO REPAIR WILL OUR AIRBAGS DEPLOY AS THIS IS PART OF THE WHOLE SYSTEM (AND THE ONE IS ALREADY SPRUNG SO COULD DAMAGE OCCUR BECAUSE OF THAT) 2. IF WE HAD BEEN DRIVING AND IT WERE TO DEPLOY AND HIT SOMEONE IT THE BACK OF THE HEAD IT COULD EASILY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT CAUSING INJURY OR EVEN DEATH TO OCCUPANTS AND TO OCCUPANTS OF OTHER VEHICLES! AFTER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, THERE ARE SEVERAL REPORTS OF THESE HEADREST EXPLODING RANDOMLY ON SEVERAL DODGE MODELS SPECIFICALLY THE DURANGO. MY VEHICLE IS A 2014 WITH 29K MILES ON IT, NEVER IN AN ACCIDENT AND BARELY DRIVEN.

THE AIRBAG LIGHT WILL FREQUENTLY ILLUMINATE AND DISABLE SEAT BELT TENSIONERS AND AIRBAG FUNCTION. SAME THING THAT IS UNDER RECALL WITH OTHER DURANGO VEHICLES (RECALL P67). DODGE CLAIMS MY SPECIFIC VEHICLE IS UNAFFECTED AND NOT UNDER RECALL BUT I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE SINCE THE EXACT SAME ISSUE IS OCCURRING. ANY GRAND CHEROKEE MODEL MADE THE SAME DAY AS MY VEHICLE, OR THE EXACT SAME DURANGO IF MANUFACTORED TWO MONTHS LATER, IS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, BUT THEY CLAIM MY DURANGO IS NOT. THE GRAND CHEROKEE USING THE IDENTICAL MODULE IN THEIR VEHICLE. PART TO BE FAULTY HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE THE ORC MODULE (OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROL) BY A LOCAL SHOP, SAME PROBLEM AS SIMILAR RECALLS YET THEY CLAIM MINE IS NOT A PART OF. WITH CURRENT SITUATION, DRIVING THE VEHICLE SAFELY IS NON EXISTENT UNTIL REPAIRED. AIRBAG AND SEATBELT MALFUNCTION WOULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR.

ON 3/6/17 THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT SEAT ACTIVE HEAD REST DEPLOYED WITHOUT CAUSE OR CRASH. WHEN DRIVING IN NORMAL CONDITIONS THE PASSENGER SIDE HEAD REST TETHERED TO THE SEAT SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY DEPLOYED CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE HEAD REST. ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THIS AND OR FIND THE CAUSE AT THE DODGE AUTONATION DEALER LOCATED AT 21027 I-45 NORTH, SPRING, TX 77388 (877-791-6569) WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED MET WITH A DECLINED REPAIR DUE TO THE DAMAGE WAS LISTED AS "TRIM". AT THE TIME THE AHR DEPLOYED A PASSENGER WAS IN THE SEAT AT THE TIME BUT WAS NOT INJURED DUE TO THE "TETHERS" HELD THE FRONT FACE OF THE HEAD REST FROM PROJECTING OUTWARD/FORWARD. I WAS NOTIFIED BY THE SERVICE DIRECTOR AT THE DODGE DEALER FRANKIE FREEZE THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE AND HE HAS PERSONALLY SEEN THIS TYPE OF DEPLOYMENT WITHOUT CAUSE. IN THE SERVICE MANUAL IN THE EVENT THE AHR DEPLOYS THERE IS A "RESET" PROCESS. DUE TO THE HIGH VELOCITY OF THE HEAD REST DEPLOYMENT THE UNIT ITSELF WAS DAMAGED TO INCLUDE THE HEAD REST COVER AND WAS NOT ABLE TO BE "RESET". NO VISIBLE DAMAGE IS APPARENT TO THE VEHICLE ITSELF (CRASH), AND NO VISIBLE CODES OR WARNING LIGHT (I.E. AIRBAG LIGHT) ARE DISPLAYED. AT THIS TIME I HAVE DISPUTED THE CLAIM BY DODGE THAT THIS IS A "TRIM" ISSUE AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CAN NOT DETERMINE WHY THE HEAD REST DEPLOYED AND REFERRED THE ISSUE AND DEPLOYMENT TO A INVESTIGATOR. I SUSPECT BUT HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE HEAD REST WAS CAUSED BY THE RIGHT REAR REAR PASSENGER OPENING THE FACTORY INSTALLED VIDEO SYSTEM INSTALLED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT (REAR ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM). IT IS POSSIBLE THE BACK OF THE FLIP OPEN MONITOR PLASTIC SHROUD STRUCK THE BACK OF THE HEAD REST WHEN OPENED CAUSING IT TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION IN NORMAL TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AT NIGHT WITH LITTLE TO NO LIGHTING IN THE VEHICLE. A DISTINCT AND LOUD POP WAS HEARD FROM THE SEAT.

VEHICLE ONLY HAD DRIVER AT THE TIME SO NO PASSENGER WAS INJURED HOWEVER THE EVENT CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DRIVER DISTRACTION AND COULD HAVE LED TO A COLLISION. IF A PASSENGER WAS PRESENT, SERIOUS HEAD, NECK, AND/OR UPPER BACK INJURY COULD HAVE OCCURRED. VEHICLE WAS TAKING TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. DEALERSHIP NOTED THAT BOTH RETAINING BRACKETS WERE BROKEN.
