DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT FRONT AND REAR BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. MINIVAN IS NOT DRIVEN IN THE CITY, NO STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, MAJORITY OF MILES WERE DONE ON THE INTERSTATE.

THE DEALER REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AND CALIPERS TWICE BUT THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED AND THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN BRAKING DISTANCE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT EVEN AFTER THE BRAKES ARE REPLACED THE BRAKES MAKES SQUEAKING SOUNDS & GRINDING ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. I TAKE IT BACK AND THEY SAY NOTHING IS WRONG. I WAIT A LITTLE LONGER AND THEY SAY BRAKE PADS & CALIPERS NEED TO BE REPLACED. GOOD THING I BROUGHT IT IN. REPLACED FRONT BRAKES AT 21150 MILES. TOLD BY SMITHTOWN DODGE & CHRYSLER(NEW YORK) THAT THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN BUT NO RECALLS ON THE BRAKES. DID SOME RESEARCH ONLINE AND DISCOVERED THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THE 2008 DODGE CARAVAN. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF STORIES OF BRAKE REPLACEMENT WITH LOW MILEAGE.THE DEALER EVEN ADMITS THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT THE PADS ARE TOO SMALL FOR THE SIZE VEHICLE.THERE IS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE REAR BRAKES,WITH STORIES OF WHEELS LOCKING UP. BEING A RETIRED MECHANIC I THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. JUST CONSIDER A VAN FULL OF PEOPLE NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP, OR WORSE HAVE A WHEEL LOCK UP AT 55MPH ON A HIGHWAY. I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKES ON MY 2008 GRAND CARAVAN THREE TIMES SINCE PURCHASING IT IN 2009. IN ADDITION THE REAR BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE FRONT BRAKES WERE REPLACED WAS IN OCTOBER 2009 AT 27,933, THEN 12/31/2010 AT 58,000 AND NOW AT 74,500 WE ARE REPLACING THEM AGAIN. THE REARS WERE REPLACED ON 10/29/2009 AT 28,653 AND NOW AT 74,500. UNDERSTAND THAT DODGE KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE I RECEIVED A LETTER IN 2010 SAYING THEY WOULD PAY A PERCENTAGE OF THE REPLACEMENT COST FOR THE FRONT BRAKES DEPENDING ON THE MILEAGE OF THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER BESIDES REPAYING FOR SOME OF THE COSTS INCURRED FOR THE FIRST REPLACEMENT NOTHING ELSE WAS DONE BECAUSE THE PROBLEM KEEPS OCCURRING EVER 30,000 MILES OR LESS. *KB

ALL CASES INVOLVED PADS AND ROTORS. *TT THERE HAS GOT TO BE DESIGN FAILURE WHERE CHRYSLER/DODGE DEVELOPERS UNDER ENGINEERED THE SIZE AND/OR COMPOSITION OF THE BRAKE CALIPER/PAD SYSTEM. CHRYSLER CONTINUES TO DENY THAT THERE IS A DESIGN PROBLEM, YET THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS HERE. WITHOUT A DOUBT, DESPITE OWNING CARAVANS SINCE THE ORIGINAL 1984 MODEL, NEVER AGAIN. THE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE ARE WEARING OUT RAPIDLY. THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS HAD TO BE CHANGED AT 13,000 MILES. WHEN THE SERVICE WAS DONE IT WAS NOTED THAT THE FRONT LEFT ROTOR WAS GROOVED AND WAS REPLACED ALONG WITH THE BRAKE PADS. THE RIGHT FRONT ROTOR WAS NOT CHANGED. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THE FRONT END ALLIGNMENT WAS PULLING TO THE RIGHT. THE DEALER ROTATED THE TIRES AND NOTED TIRE WEAR WAS THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE HAD 17144 MILES AND THE ALLIGNMENT WAS STILL PULLING. THE DEALER CHECKED AND STATED THE FRONT END WAS SET AT MANUFACTURERS SPECS. THE VEHICLE HAD 23,922 MILES AND THE FRONT BRAKES WERE SQEAKING AND GRINDING AGAIN. THE DEALER CHANGED THE FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. THE VEHICLE HAD 28,343 MILES AND THE FRONT END WAS SQEAKING AND SHUDDERING WHEN BRAKING AT ANY SPEEDS. THE DEALER CHECKED THE ALIGNMENT AND RESET THE TOE. BY THIS TIME THE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WERE COMPLETELY WORN BELOW 3/32 TREAD DEPTH. THE DEALER STATED THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE ALIGNMENT PROBLEM. THE DEALER CHANGED THE FRONT ROTORS AND BRAKES DUE TO THEM BEING GROOVED AND WARPED. THE DEALER WAS TOLD THE NOISE SOUNDED AS THOUGH IT WAS COMING FROM THE REAR BRAKES. THE DEALER TOLD ME THE REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE WARPED AND THE PADS WERE SEVERELY WORN AND SHOULD BE REPLACED. THE REAR BRAKES WERE NOT EVEN INSPECTED AT ANY TIME WHEN THE FRONT BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GROUND DOWN TO METAL. THE DEALER COULD ONLY TELL ME THE REAR BRAKES WERE NO LONGER UNDER THE WARRANTY. WAS INFORMED BY CHRYSLER CORPORATION THAT THIS YEAR, MAKE, MODEL HAS A KNOWN "DESIGN" FLAW IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THEIR SOLUTION IS TO TEMPORARILY KEEP REPLACING THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, HOWEVER AFTER 36000 MILES THE CONSUMER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FULL REPLACEMENT AND PAYMENT OF THESE PARTS EVERY SINGLE YEAR AS THEY FAIL TO OPERATE CORRECTLY EVERY 12,000 MILES. CHRYSLER CORPORATION KNOWINGLY SOLD THIS VEHICLE TO CONSUMERS AND REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING BUT PUT A BANDAID ON THIS ISSUE. THEY SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL AND COMPLETELY REHAUL THE BRAKING SYSTEM OR GIVE THE CONSUMERS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE AND REIMBURSE FOR ALL EXPENSES SURROUNDING THIS ISSUE. WE WERE OVER 1000 MILES FROM HOME ON JULY 20TH IN MIAMI WHEN BOTH BRAKES AND MASTER CYLINDER WENT OUT. BY LUCK I NOTICED THE PROBLEM AND BROUGHT IT IN FOR SERVICE, THIS HAD THE POTENTIAL TO BE LIFE THREATENING FOR MY YOUNG KIDS, MY WIFE AND I. WE ARE LOOKING TO YOU FOR HELP BEFORE WE OR SOMEONE GETS HURT. WE ARE AVERAGING THE NEED FOR BRAKES EVERY 12K MILES. WE HAVE PAID FOR ALL OF THE REPAIRS AND DODGE FINALLY ISSUED A REPAYMENT FOR A PERCENTAGE OF THE COST. THESE BRAKES ARE UNDERPERFORMING AND I BELIEVE IT IS AN ENGINEERING ISSUE. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 20 YRS AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE BRAKES AT A RATE LIKE THIS. BY THIS TIME I SHOULD HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MAYBE ONE SET AT A MAXIMUM. CHRYSLER HAS FAILED TO ADMIT THEIR MISTAKE IN UNDERSIZING BRAKES WHICH CLEARLY ARE BEING "EATEN UP" AT A RATE 5-6 TIMES WHAT THEY SHOULD. CHRYSLER DID REIMBURSE ME $100 FOR A $500 BRAKE JOB ONE TIME STATING THAT THEY REALIZED THAT ORIGINAL BRAKES WERE BASICALLY SHODDY, BUT THEY HAVE FAILED TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE DESIGN OF THE VAN ITSELF. IN FACT, THEY BLAMED THE PROBLEM ON THE EPA NO LONGER ALLOWING ASBESTOS IN THE BRAKES. IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHY ISN'T EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD REPLACING BRAKES AT THIS ASTRONOMICAL RATE? DRIVER SIDE REAR BRAKE CALIBER MECHANISM. I HAS THE CALIBER REPLACED IN MARCH AND HAD NEW BREAK PADS AND ROTORS INSTALLED. I DROVE ABOUT LESS THAN 3000 MILE AND HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN AGAIN. IN THIS LAST EPISODE I HAVE PAID OUT $1300 IN JUST PARTS, NOT TO MENTION LABOR COSTS, AND TWO $100 TOW BILLS AND THE PROBLEM IS STILL NOT FIXED. I HAVE REPLACED THE ENTIRE BREAK CALIBER FULLY LOADED MECHANISM AND DROVE 20 MILES AND HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED DUE TO THE BREAK CALIBER FREEZING AGAIN. THIS ISSUE IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE DEATH OF MYSELF MY PASSENGERS, AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD. I BOUGHT THIS CAR USED TO GET BACK AND FORTH TO WORK AND FAMILY EVENTS. I GOT THIS CAR BECAUSE OF IT SIZE AFFORDABLE FOR ME AS A SINGLE MOTHER OF THREE LIVING ON A FIXED INCOME. THE CALIPERS CAUSE BRAKES TO WEAR OUT BETWEEN 8000 MILES TO 14000 MILES, FAR SOONER THAN NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR WOULD CAUSE. DEALERSHIPS ARE REPAIRING FAULTY CALIPERS UNDER "GOOD WILL" TICKETS, WHICH ARE TREATED LIKE A WARRANTY REPAIRS IN RESPECTS TO CHARGES TO THE VEHICLES OWNER. THEY SAID THAT THE CALIPER ADAPTER WAS NEW TO THIS MODEL (2008), THAT THEY HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE AND THAT CHRYSLER HAS A NEWER DESIGN BUT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PADS, CALIPERS AND ROTORS ON BOTH REAR BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY CLEANED AND LUBRICATED THE BRAKES AND I CONTINUED TO CHICAGO TO HAVE THE REPAIRS DONE THERE. LATER MY DAUGHTER TOLD ME THAT IN APRIL 2011, THE SAME THING HAD HAPPENED BUT ON THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE. AGAIN THIS WAS ON THE INTERSTATE. SHE HEARD A VERY LOUD SQUEALING. AFTER TAPPING THE BRAKES A FEW TIMES THE SOUND WENT AWAY AND SHE CONTINUED. THIS IS WHY THE DEALER SAID THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE PADS, CALIPERS AND ROTOR ALSO NEEDED REPLACEMENT. WORSE, MY DAUGHTER'S BROTHER-IN-LAW BOUGHT THE SAME MODEL CARAVAN IN 2008. ON A TRIP TO VIRGINIA, ALSO ON THE INTERSTATE, THEIR BRAKES SEIZED IN THE SAME MANNER. WHEN WE GOT TO CHICAGO, I TOOK THE VAN INTO ROESCH CHRYSLER IN ELMHURST ILLINOIS. THEY REPLACED THE CALIPERS UNDER WARRANTY BUT CHARGED ME TO REPLACE THE PADS AND ROTORS. THE FACT THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE ON MY DAUGHTER'S VAN, THAT IT ALSO HAPPENED ON HER BROTHER-IN-LAW'S SAME MODEL/YEAR VAN, THAT THE CALIPER DESIGN WAS NEW IN 2008, THAT SINCE THEN A NEW CALIPER DESIGN HAS BEEN RELEASED ' LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGINAL CALIPER/BRAKE DESIGN IS DEFECTIVE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE RADIATOR CAP HAD TO BE REPAIRED WHICH WAS WHY THE CONSUMER HAD TO KEEP ADDING COOLANT. THE WASHER FLUID SENSOR WAS NOT WORKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN AUGUST 2010, THE POWER SLIDING DOOR STOPPED FUNCTIONING FOR DAYS. WHEN THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM. HOWEVER, TWO MONTHS LATER A RECALL WAS ISSUED. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE ALSO EXPERIENCED POWER FAILURES WITH THE VEHICLE. EACH TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED THE ENGINE WOULD RUN, BUT NOTHING ELSE IN THE VEHICLE WORKED, SUCH AS THE WINDOWS, LOCKS, WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND INTERIOR LIGHTS ETC. ON OCTOBER 25, 2010 WHILE DRIVING HE SMELLED SMOKE AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE RIGHT REAR CALIPER WAS FROZEN, THE LEFT REAR CALIPER WAS STICKING AND THE BRAKE PADS WERE OVERHEATED AND CRACKED. THE REAR CALIPERS, AND BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED AT 29,979 MILES. THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED A RENTAL VEHICLE WHEN THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,768. THIS CAR IS NEW AND THE FIRST BRAKE JOB NEEDS ROTORS? WE PAID FOR IT AND LATER DODGE SENT OUT A REIMBURSEMENT LETTER IN THE SUMMER TO PAY HALF OF THE COSTS. I WONDER IF THEY PUT THE SAME JUNK ROTORS BACK ON? NOW, 6K MILES LATER THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKE SQUEALS LIKE THE PAD IS LOW BUT THE DEALER SAID IT IS OK AND THAT IS "NORMAL". IT IS NOT NORMAL TO HEAR A GRINDING PAD ON ROTOR SOUND WHEN THE PAD IS GOOD! THE ONLY THING HE SAID THEY COULD DO WOULD BE TO RESURFACE THE ROTOR AND PUT STOP SQUEAL ON THE PAD. IT WOULD COST AROUND 120.00 BUCKS. POOR PARTS ARE OBVIOUSLY ON THIS CAR...I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER DODGE OR SUGGEST ANYONE DO SO. OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS NEW CAR SO FAR ARE: 1. WHEN FIRST BOUGHT, TRANS FLUID LEAK, WARRANTY FIXED THAT. 2. ROTORS AND PADS ON FRONT (AS DESCRIBED ABOVE), REIMBURSED FOR HALF 3. IN JULY2010, I HAD THE FRONT BRAKES REPLACE AFTER ONLY 30000 M ILES. ALSO A FRONT CALIPER WAS REPLACED DUE TO IT NOT RELEASING AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES. IN AUG, 2010 ON A RETURN TRIP FROM FLORIDA, THE REAR BRAKE CALIPERS FROZE , WOULD NOT RELEASE, CAUSING THE REAR BRAKES TO OVERHEAT, CAUSING REAR BRAKE FAILURE. REPAIR OF THE REAR BRAKES COST APROX.$ 580.00. A COMPLAINT TO CHRYSLER CORP. WAS INITIATED, AND THEY REIMBURSED A TOTAL OF$280.00. I WAS TOLD BY 2 DEALERS THAT THERE HAS BEEN AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE CALIPERS ON THE CHRYSLER/DODGE VANS. SINCE WE WERE TRANSPORTING OXYGEN THAT MY WIFE NEEDS FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES A FIRE OR OTHER FAILURE OF THE REAR BRAKES, IE FIRE, SEIZING OF THE BRAKES CAUSING A WRECK, OR BEING DISABLED ON THE HIGHWAY, MILES FROM A REPAIR FACILITY COULD HAVE HAD SERIOUS RESULTS. AT THE PRESENT TIME THE ONLY REMAINING CALIPER HAS FAILED, FROZE TO THE ROTOR, AND IS IN NEED OF REPAIR WHICH HAS BEEN SCHEDULED AT A NON DEALER SHOP. THE COST HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AT $100.00. I AM A PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC AND HAVE NEVER SEEN BRAKES WEAR OUT IN 12,000 MILES. DODGE REFUSES TO REPLACE THE BRAKES CITING THAT THEY ARE WEAR ITEMS. THEY SHOULD WEAR OUT IN 50,000 MILES, NOT 12,000. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM AS EVEN WHEN NEW, THE BRAKES ARE SERIOUSLY UNDER ENGINEERED. DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS NOTICED THE VEHICLE FELT WITH LESS POWER THAN USUAL. I CAME UP TO A TRAFFIC JAM AND HAD TO REDUCE SPEED TO 0 MPH. AT THIS POINT I NOTICE A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING OUT OF THE REAR RIGHT WHEEL WELL AND BEGAN NOTICING A BURNT BRAKE SMELL. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE AND SAW THE BRAKE PADS WERE SMOKING PROFUSELY. VISUAL INSPECTION SHOWED THE ROTOR HAD ACQUIRED A LIGHT BLUE COLOR ALL AROUND. ROTORS AND PADS HAVE LESS THAN 300 MILES SINCE BEING INSTALLED, I HAD INSTALLED AFTERMARKET CERAMIC PADS INSTEAD OF DEALER'S SEMI-METALLIC COMPOUND, NEW ROTORS ARE ALSO AFTERMARKET SINCE I REFUSED TO GIVE DODGE ANY MORE MONEY FOR WHAT I CONSIDERED SUB PAR COMPONENTS SINCE I HAD TO DO A TOTAL BRAKE REPLACEMENT WELL UNDER 30,000 MILES AND MY PREVIOUS REQUEST FOR SERVICING BRAKES UNDER WARRANTY WENT UNANSWERED.. VAN WAS INSPECTED BY TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS BEFORE BRAKE REPLACEMENT AND BOTH DEALERS SAID THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM , THAT IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CALIPERS AND OR OTHER BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS. ONCE BRAKE PADS STOPPED SMOKING I RESUMED MINIMUM HIGHWAY SPEED UNTIL REACHING AN EXIT TWO MILES AHEAD. VAN DID NOT FEEL SLUGGISH AT THIS POINT AND BRAKES DID NOT SMOKE AGAIN. THIS COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME AGAIN BECAUSE DEALER WAS NOT ABLE TO FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM PREVIOUSLY AND THEY HAVE NO KNOWN ROOT CAUSE FOR THIS FAILURE. A RECENT DISCUSSION WITH A FRIEND WHO OWNS THE SAME YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL HAS THE SAME SITUATION OF PREMATURE BRAKE PAD EROSION AND NEEDS A SECOND REPLACEMENT WITH EVEN LESS MILES THAN WE HAVE ON OUR VEHICLE. ORIGINALLY WE BELIEVED WE WERE JUST HARDER ON OUR BRAKES THAN NORMAL BUT WITH TWO REPLACEMENTS AND WARPED ROTORS WITHIN 35,000 MILES WE BELIEVE THERE'S A BIGGER ISSUE. ADDITIONALLY THERE ARE STRANGE NOISES FROM THE FRONT BRAKE AREA AND THERE'S A CONCERN THAT THERE COULD BE OTHER ISSUES. THE CONTACT ASSUMED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD ASSUME LIABILITY FOR THE REPAIRS; HOWEVER, HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD BE MADE AT HIS EXPENSE. THE CONTACT DECLINED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED. HE STATED THAT THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED WHEN THE FRONT BRAKES WERE REPAIRED. THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 24,200.

SEMI-METALLIC COMPOUND LOCATED TOWARDS THE BACK SIDE OF THE PAD WAS ALMOST WORN DOWN TO THE METAL WHILE THE FRONT SIDE OF THE PAD STILL HAD ENOUGH COMPOUND ON IT THAT THE WEAR INDICATOR IS NOT MAKING CONTACT WITH THE ROTOR. BRAKE FAILURE IS IMMINENT AND THE WEAR INDICATOR WILL IS NOT PROVIDING ANY SOUND WARNING THAT THE COMPOUND IS WORN DOWN TO THE METAL. DEALERSHIP WAS NOT ABLE TO EXPLAIN THE REASON FOR UNEVEN BRAKE PAD WEAR ON THE REAR BRAKES. THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY THE WEAR INDICATOR WAS NOT MAKING CONTACT WITH THE PAD EVEN THOUGH THE TECHNICIAN STATED THE PADS ARE 95% WORN. CHRYSLER OFFER TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE PADS AND ROTORS WITH SIMILAR MATERIALS. IT SEEMED TO WORK FOR A WEEK OR TWO BUT THE PROBLEMS QUICKLY RETURNED. WE THEN DECIDED TO HAVE THE ROTORS TURNED TO SEE IF THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. IT SEEMED TO FIX THE PROBLEM AGAIN FOR A VERY SHORT WHILE. WE THEN PURCHASED AND INSTALLED BRAND NEW ROTORS WHICH AGAIN FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR A SHORT WHILE. SEEING AS WE HAD FAILED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WE DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THEM FIX OUR BRAKES. THEY OF COURSE SAID THAT THE BRAKES WERE NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY BUT AS A GOODWILL GESTURE THEY WOULD REPAIR THE BRAKES FOR $50. THEY TURNED OUR FRONT ROTORS AGAIN, STATING THAT THE SHUDDERING WAS BECAUSE THE ROTORS WERE WARPED, AGAIN. AS I DROVE AWAY THAT DAY THE VAN DID THE SAME SHUDDERING. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT THE BACK ROTORS WERE ALSO WARPED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY DID THAT AND EVERYTHING SEEMED FAIRLY OKAY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND THEN THE GRINDING NOISE SLOWLY CAME BACK AND THE SHUDDERING HAS RETURNED. IT HAS ONLY BEEN 3 MONTHS SINCE THE WHOLE BRAKE SYSTEM HAD BEEN REPAIRED! I HEAR A TSB HAS ALREADY BEEN ISSUED ON THE BRAKE PROBLEMS ON THIS MODEL WITH NUMEROUS CONSUMER COMPLAINTS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED AND DAMAGED THE BRAKE PADS. THE BRAKES AND ROTORS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED TWICE WITHIN SEVEN MONTHS. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEFECT UNTIL THE BRAKE PADS WERE GRINDING AND FAILED INSPECTION. THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED AT THAT TIME; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE HAS RECURRED. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT THE FAILURES WERE DUE TO MANUFACTURER DEFECTS AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,667 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,700. I PURCHASED A 2008 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN SXT USED FROM A FLEET SERVICE WITH APPROX 28K MILES ON IT. I WENT TO CHECK THE TIRES AND BRAKES MYSELF, AND HAVE DISCOVERED THE BRAKES AND ROTORS NEED REPLACING. THE PROBLEM IS, NO METAL IS TOUCHING THE ROTORS, YET THEY ARE WORE ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE DOWN TO THE MINIMUM THICKNESS OF 26.4 MM. THE PARTS DEALER WON'T TURN THEM, SO NEW ONES HAVE TO BE INSTALLED. 02/23/2009- PURCHASED 2008 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN- ON DAY OF PURCHASE I ASKED WHY BRAKES MADE A BARKING SOUND,WAS TOLD BECAUSE IT SAT IN PARKING LOT FOR A WHILE. ODOMETER-19230THE NEXT DAY THE VAN SHUT ITSELF OFF WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I COULD STEER AND THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING BUT I COULDN'T ACCELERATE AND ALL INSTRUMENT LIGHTING WAS OFF.I CALLED SALE AUTO MALL THE PLACE I BOUGHT IT AND THEY SAID CALL BACK IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN. CALLED SALE AUTO MALL, THEY REFERRED ME TO DODGE DEALERSHIP IN GREENVILLE, CALLED THEM AND ASKED FOR TOW, THEY REFUSED, THEY TOLD ME TO BRING IT AS FAR AS I COULD. I AM WRITING TO CHRYSLER CANADA BECAUSE WE ARE VERY UNHAPPY WITH OUR 2008 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, ONE THAT I WOULD CLASSIFY AS A RUNAWAY VEHICLE CREATING A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD. CURRENT ODOMETER READING 25347 THIS VEHICLE WENT FOR ITS FIRST SERVICE FEBRUARY 9, 2009 TO A VEHICLE CHECK-UP PEACE OF MIND INSPECTION. PRIMARILY WITH AN INQUIRY TO CHECK THE BRAKE SYSTEM SINCE THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT SOMEWHAT SPONGY WHEN APPLIED. THE INSPECTION INDICATED THE BRAKES PULSATED BECAUSE OF A WARPED DISK. THE WARPED DISK IS MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY HIGH HEAT GENERATED FROM PROLONGED BRAKING. THIS APPEARS TO BE IN CONTRADICTION WITH THE INSTRUCTION IN THE 2008 DODGE OWNER'S MANUAL PAGE 334 UNDER NOTE: TO SELECT THE PROPER GEAR POSITION FOR MAXIMUM DECELERATION (ENGINE BREAKING), SIMPLY PRESS AND HOLD THE GEAR SELECTOR LEVER TO THE LEFT (-). THE TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT TO THE RANGE FROM WHICH THE VEHICLE CAN BEST BE SLOWED DOWN. THIS IS CLEARLY NOT PROVIDING THE DESIRED RESULT. TO ASSIST THE VEHICLE IN MAINTAINING CONTROL DOWNHILL, SHIFTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION INTO 3RD GEAR (AT 60 KPH.) SHOULD ENABLE THE VEHICLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL WITHOUT HAVING TO 'RIDE THE BRAKES'. THIS IS NOT THE CASE; THE ELECTRONICS CONTROLLING THE SHIFTING SYSTEM IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DROPS OUT OF LOW GEAR (3RD) INTO HIGH GEAR (D) UNDER THE SLIGHTEST DOWNHILL MOMENTUM, THUS MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. PAGE 337 IN THE 208 DODGE OWNER'S MANUAL SPECIFICALLY WARNS THAT RIDING THE BRAKES CAN LEAD TO BRAKE FAILURE AND POSSIBLY AN ACCIDENT. AS WE HAVE EXPERIENCED TO OUR HORROR ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS DRIVING ON THE WEST COAST (VANCOUVER ISLAND), WHILE TRYING TO MAINTAIN VEHICLE CONTROL ON A DOWNHILL STRETCH OF PAVED ROAD, THIS 4 SPEED ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM IS INCAPABLE OF PROVIDING ANY ENGINE BRAKING ASSISTANCE WHATSOEVER. THE ONLY ALTERNATIVE IS TO RIDE THE BRAKES TO MAINTAIN VEHICLE CONTROL. *TR

LEFT FRONT BRAKE GRINDING DURING LOW SPEED STOPS. STARTED ALL OF THE SUDDEN ONE EVENING. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT MORNING. WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE A WARRANTY COVERED REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS PAST THE 12,000 MILE LIMIT ON BRAKE REPAIR. THIS IS 15,000 HIGHWAY MILES AFTER ONLY 6 MONTHS. THE DODGE DEALER SAID IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED BY THE STANDARD WARRANTY OR THE 100,000 MILE BUMPER TO BUMPER EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS WAS A "NORMAL" WEAR ITEM AND WOULD BE $270 TO REPLACE THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND TO TURN BOTH FRONT ROTORS. I FIND IT SHOCKING THAT A MANUFACTURER WITH AS MANY COMPLAINTS AS THEY HAVE ON THIS EXACT ISSUE STILL FAILS TO EVEN GIVE "GOODWILL" COVERAGE ON SOMETHING AS SERIOUS AS PREMATURE BRAKE FAILURE. *TR
