Dealership still cannot pinpoint exactly what is wrong but the car does not start. One time it’ll start and the next it won’t. It’s actually left me stranded in the cold because that seems to be the only time it won’t start. It’s happened to many other grand caravan owners too. No mechanic I’ve taken it to can solve the problem I’ve spent so much money replacing parts on this car.
The TIPM failed which caused a loss of power to the vehicle and power to the fuel pump. I was driving at approximately 60 MPH when the vehicle lost all power and the steering wheel felt locked. I was unable to turn the steering wheel as the Dodge Grand Caravan came to a quick stop as if it was out of gas. Luckily I reacted quickly and was able to avoid an accident. After approximately 10 minutes of trying to restart the vehicle and drive to a safe location the vehicle restarted. This happened again when I was driving and came to a red light at a major intersection and the vehicle stalled out as if out of gas and the steering locked. I again tried to restart the vehicle intermittently for 15 minutes; after which it finally restarted, and I was able to drive and get out of the intersection without an accident. I was lucky that this didn't cause an accident. The other times the defective TIPM and power to the fuel pump caused the vehicle to fail to start and left me stranded. I have had the vehicle diagnosed and the TIPM repair price is quite expensive. The vehicle did not have any check engine or warning lights before this occurred. I have read many similar complaints of this occurring with others driving Dodge/Chrysler vehicles. I feel that there is evidence that the TIPM and the fuel pump on the 2011 Dodge Caravan are safety concerns. Every experienced mechanic I have spoken with is aware of the common issue with the TIPM, and power to the fuel pump and vehicle. Although I avoided an accident there is a concern for everyone's safety.
This vehicle always fails to start in the colder weather. After a review of this condition. It has been found that the fuel pump relay does not send proper signal. This relay is a part of the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). When it fails to operate, the vehicle will experience long crank times. With its ignition switch style, as soon as you turn the key, the vehicle will continue to crank UNLESS you manually turn the switch all the way back to the off position. This condition will cause the starter motor to overheat or burn up. Eventually the vehicle may start then die. Fuel delivery is too inconsistent when colder weather arises. You can't just replace a plug-in-style replacement fuel pump relay since it is a part of the whole TIPM. This vehicle has not yet died in traffic or on the highway thank God. There is never any CEL illumination or any stored fault codes. It started doing this the first winter I bought it. This is my second year and it's only just Fall and it is acting up again. This is a KNOWN issue among these TIPMs that are on more than just this vehicle but many other Dodge/Chryslers with this same TIPM. Someone needs to take accountability for a faulty product that needs redesigned before these issues continue to affect the consumers that trust in their product. I hope that this issue is addressed and resolved before others continue to complain about vehicle faults, or even worse experience any catastrophic conditions resulting in death of consumers based on this faulty TIPM, that controls most aspects of the whole vehicle.
The tipm fuel pump relay is stuck causing the fuel pump to stay on even when the vehicle is turned off and the key is not in the ignition switch. This problem is, its dangerous if I was ever to be in an accident and fuel pump will stay on according to the mechanic. Also my car battery is drained after an hour making it undrivable until I call a tow or get a jump start. It was inspected by a mechanic and the vehicle is available for inspection. No warning lamps were on or previous symptoms before 4/30/21. Only the sound of a running fuel pump when the car is completely off. Mechanic states car is known to have this issue. Recalls were made for other dodge vehicles with same part number but they failed to include the this model.
Car starts intermittently especially when In colder conditions takes 3 to 4 starts , hard to start , put in neutral and starts right away ,car feels like it’s going to stall out when accelerating at times
The accelerator pedal sticks in full throttle and forces the car to speed forward. Brakes barely overcome the acceleration and the engine will accelerate from a complete stop. Super dangerous and there are a number of threads on vehicle forums that describe the situation
Vehicle shakes, dash lights flash on an off, doesn't want to accelerate, check engine light flashes occasionally. Mechanic has run diagnostic tests, the only code the vehicle is showing is oil pressure.
The fuel pump relay failed. This is a very common problem with Caravans, and is very expensive to fix. The Grand Cherokee and Durango have the same design, and there is a recall on those models. The Caravan should have a recall declared as well. Thank you.
purchased van no problem mechanic gave great review following week wouldnt start mechanic said tipm is bad we had tipm rep[laced already 3 times and now its bad again this time i was with my family when van completly shut off on highway doing 70 miles a hour we have to carry a jumper battery pack with us to start van i called crysler and they informed me there is no problems with my vans tipm well thats funny google has over 45 thousand articles about these problems and nobody does anything about it till people die
THE GAS PUMP STAYS ACTIVATED AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF; AS A CONSEQUENCE IT HAS DRAINED THE CAR BATTERY TWICE.
RELAY FUEL PUMP IS NOT FUNCTIONING
IT STARTED WITH MY VEHICLE NOT STARTING INTERMITTENTLY. AS THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AT FIRST THOUGHT IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP. HAVING THIS REPLACED. THE VAN HAS COMPLETED WENT DEAD WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND HAD KIDS IN CAR WITH ME. TRIES TO GO DEAD WHILE SITTING IDLE AT REDLIGHTS AND WILL SHAKE DURING ACCELARATION AND TRIES TO QUIT. READING ALOT ON THIS AND OTHERS HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. OTHER VEHICLES HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR SAME ISSUES ALSO. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND ADDRESS ASAP BEFORE SOMEONE IS INJURIED OR KILLED DUE TO THE VEHICLE GOING DEAD WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. PLEASE HELP ON GETTING THIS RECALL GOING. OCTOBER 8,2020 I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN HILL ON A CITY STREET IN PUYALLUP, WA WHEN THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING. I HAD NO STEERING, BRAKES, OR ANYWAY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. I MANAGED TO COAST INTO A NEARBY LOWES HARDWARE PARKING LOT AND RAN INTO A BARRIER IN ORDER TO STOP. I WAS LUCKY THERE WERE NO PEOPLE OR OTHER CARS IN MY PATH OF TRAVEL WHEN I ENTERED AS I WAS UNABLE TO STOP. I CALLED MY INSURER, GEICI, AND ARRANGED FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED. TOWING WAS PERFORMED BY ENGELS TOWING , PUYALLUP, WA (253) 845-0034. CHECKING ONLINE I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. DODGE EVEN HAS A BYPASS TO THE FUEL PUMP AS AN AFTERMARKET PART TO FIX SOME OF THESE ISSUES BUT NOT ALL OF THE PROBLEMS.THE FUEL PUMP RELAY HAS INTERMITTENT POWER TO THE RELAY AND THAT IS CAUSING THE NO START PROBLEM. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT DUE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V115000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) THE PART WAS UNABLE TO BE PURCHASED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. TROUBLESHOOTING HAS VERIFIED THAT THE FUEL PUMP RELAY IS INDEED THE ISSUE. AN ATTEMPTING TO PURCHASE THE RELAY KIT CBWPR091AA SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL FROM MY LOCAL DODGE DEALER IN CONWAY ARKANSAS FAILED. THEY TELL ME THEY CAN'T SELL ME THE PART BECAUSE THE RECALL DOES NOT COVER MY VEHICLE AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR A $1000+ TIPMS BOARD REPLACEMENT. DODGE IS EXTORTING EXORBITANT AMOUNTS FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS FOR EXPENSIVE REPAIRS THAT COULD BE DONE AT A TINY FRACTION OF THE COST IF CUSTOMERS WERE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE THAT SIMPLE RELAY KIT. MEANWHILE I'M HAVING TO OPERATE AN UNSAFE VEHICLE UNTIL I FIND ANOTHER SOURCE TO OBTAIN THE SPECIFIED PART IN THE RECALL. THIS MODEL VEHICLE SHOULD ALSO BE PART OF THAT SAFETY RECALL AND DODGE/CHRYSLER SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FOR PUTTING THEIR CUSTOMERS AT RISK AS A RESULT OF THEIR UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES.

IT STARTED WITH MY VEHICLE NOT STARTING INTERMITTENTLY. AS THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT MAY BE THE FUEL PUMP. AFTER EXTENSIVE SEARCHING IT WAS REVEALED TO BE A FAULTY TIPM MODULE THAT CAUSES ISSUES WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY VALIDATED THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS LISTED FOR MOST VEHICLES WITH THIS SAME MODULE, HOWEVER NOT FOR THE DODGE GRAND CARAVAN, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY. THE ISSUE HAS NOW ESCALATED. WHILE DRIVING IN THE PITCH DARK TO WORK THE VEHICLE STARTED ACTING FUNNY, THEN ALL POWER SHUT OFF, STEERING LOCKED, FOB LOCKED IN IGNITION, NO LIGHTS, NO BLINKERS, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. I HAD JUST DROPPED OFF MY SON SO GLAD HE WASN'T WITH ME. IT SEEMS THE PROBLEM ALL GOES BACK TO THE TIPM WHICH HAS BEEN DRAINING MY BATTERY AND CAUSING OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. I CONTACTED DODGE AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP BECAUSE MY VEHICLE IS "OUTSIDE THE WARRANTY". I EXPLAINED HOW THIS PROBLEM DOESN'T EVEN START UNTIL APPROX. 70,000 MILES(I'M CURRENTLY AT 60,000). BEYOND THAT THE WARRANT Y WAS EXPIRED WHEN I PURCHASED IT USED FROM THE DODGE DEALER 3 YEARS AGO. I'VE CONTACTED DODGE NUMEROUS TIMES AND NO ONE OF ANY STATURE WILL EVEN TALK TO ME SINCE THE CASEWORKER CALLED THE CASE "CLOSED" BASED ON THE WARRANTY. I THINK THIS IS IMMORAL ON THE PART OF DODGE BEING THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH THESES MODULES THAT GOES AS FAR BACK AS 2010, YET THEY CONTINUED TO USE IT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE SO MY WIFE CAN MOVE MY CHILD AROUND SAFELY, AND AM SCARED TO EVEN LET HER DRIVE IT. AT THE MOMENT NO ONE IS DRIVING IT BECAUSE IT DIED ON THE ROAD AND SMELLS LIKE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS BURNING. I AM CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR A WAY TO FIX THIS ISSUE. THE ESTIMATED COST OF REPAIR IS AROUND $2,000.00.

SO THERE ARE DAYS WHERE THE VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVABLE AS IT WILL NOT START DO TO THE PROBLEM OF NO FUEL BEING INJECTED INTO THE ENGINE DUE TO A BAD OR FAULTY FUEL PUMP RELAY.

THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2019 BUT IT WAS WORSE ON 10/27/19. OTHER 2011 MODELS HAVE HAD RECALLS FOR THE TIPM, THE GRAND CARAVAN HAS NOT.

APPARENTLY I NO LONGER HAVE POWER TO MY FUEL PUMP, AND THE RELAY IS INTEGRATED INTO THE FUSE BOX. UPON DOING SOME RESEARCH THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE THAT CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO RANDOMLY SHUT OFF. DEALERSHIPS WANT $1200 TO FIX.

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH MY 4 KIDS AGED 13, 11, 8 AND 3 WHEN THE CARAVAN STALLED WHILE IN MOTION AT THE RED LIGHT NEAR A MAJOR INTERSECTION WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. WITH NO POWER STEERING OR BREAKS, THE VAN STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND ON COMING TRAFFIC HAD TO BREAK HARD TO PREVENT A COLLISION. BOULEVARD DODGE CHRYSLER DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS FAULTY ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP. THE REPAIR COST ME $478 (DEC. 3 2018). ON TUESDAY JAN 15 2019 THE CAR STARTED DIFFERENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE SAME DEALER THEY TOLD ME THE CAUSE IS THE TIPM WHICH WOULD COST ABOUT $2000. WHEN I STARTED MY RESEARCH I REALIZED THAT BOTH ISSUE ARE RELATED AND CAUSED BY THE TIPM. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH MANY MODELS OF FCA WHICH SOME VEHICLES HAD RECALLS FROM FCA. I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCES STALLING DUE TO TIPM ISSUE ON CARAVAN. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND NHTSA AS WELL AS TRANSPORT CANADA HAS TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC BEFORE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR DEATH OCCURS. ALTERNATOR HAS BEEN REPLACED IN PAST YEAR AND HAS BEEN TESTED TO BE GOOD, BATTERY HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE IN TWO YEARS. WHEN DIAGNOSED BY A DODGE DEALERSHIP THE ISSUE IS SAID TO BE A POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE WHICH COSTS $1,008.00 NOT INCLUDING LABOR. THE PART IS ORDERED BUT ON NATIONAL BACKORDER WITH NO ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL.

APPARENTLY THIS IS A WIDELY KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH DODGE AND RELATED CHRYSLER VEHICLES ACCORDING TO OUR MECHANIC. BASICALLY THE TIPM--TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE IS BAD AND THIS CAUSES AMONG OTHER SYMPTOMS: VEHICLE NOT STARTING, ISSUES WITH ELECTRIC CONTROLS(LIGHTING), ISSUES WITH FUEL SYSTEM(FUEL PUMP OR RELAY) OUR VEHICLE HAD ISSUES STARTING. ESPECIALLY DURING WINTERTIME THIS HAPPENED. AND HAVING REPLACED THE BATTERY NEW AND ALSO HAVING ENSURED SPARKPLUGS ARE NEW, THOSE ISSUES WERE RULED OUT. STARTER ISSUE ALSO WERE RULED OUT BOTH BY OBVSERVATION AND MECHANIC. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO HAVE DIFFICULTY AND INTERMITTENT SUCCESSES IN STARTING, UP TO THE POINT THAT IT DIDN'T START ANYMORE ON 12/10/2018. THE STARTER IS TURNING BUT ENGINE DOESN'T START. SO TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND LEARNED THAT THE TIPM IS THE ISSUE. PRIOR TO IT TOTALLY FAILING TO START., IN THE PAST 4 MONTHS, THE VEHICLE HAD STALLED 4 TO 5 TIMES WHILE DRIVING IT ON THE THREAD GOING ABOUT 30 TO 40 MILES AN HOUR WITH TRAFFIC. I REALIZED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE BASICALLY THE CAR STOPS ALL OF A SUDDEN WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD--WITH TRAFFIC. WHEN THIS FAILURE HAPPENS, APPARENTLY NO FUEL GOES INTO THE ENGINE THAT THE VEHICLE COMES TO A HALT. THERE IS NO POWER STEERING AND RADIO OR OTHER--AS IF THE POWER WAS JUST TOTALLY DISCONNECTED. LUCKILY WE WERE ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OFF THE ROAD, USING ITS MOMENTUM. AND AFTER A COUPLE TIMES TURNING ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. AGAIN THE SUDDEN ENGINE STOPPAGE OCCURRED AROUND 5 TIMES AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT AFTER A COUPLE OF TRIES. UNTIL THE VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER START AT ALL FROM A PARKING LOT. THE REPAIRS COS $1300+ FOR THE TIPM WHICH HAD TO BE DEALER ORDERED AND REPROGRAMMED.

THE LOCKS WOULD LOCK AND UNLOCK BY THEMSELVES WHILE DRIVING, SEEMED LIKE EVERY TIME IT RAINED OUT WINDOWS WOULD ROLL DOWN BY THEMSELVES OVER NIGHT OR WHILE WE WERE IN A STORE WHILE THE VAN WAS SHUT OFF. IN JUNE THE VAN STARTED STALLING WHILE WE WOULD DRIVE IT. IT WOULD RANDOMLY DIE WHILE IDLING. IN JULY/AUG I HAD MY OIL CHANGED, THE FOLLOWING DAY MY VAN WOULDN'T START. WHILE IN THE MOMENT I THOUGHT THE SHOP HAD DONE SOMETHING TO IT, SINCE I HAD GOTTEN FRUSTRATED WITH THEM THERE, (POOR FELLAS) THAT CLEARLY WAS NOT THE CASE. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION MY FUEL PUMP HAD WENT OUT, SO I PAID TO HAVE THAT REPLACED. AROUND SEPT THE VAN WOULDN'T START. IT WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START. MY FUEL PUMP WOULD TURN ON, AFTER TURNING THE KEY ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES. IN OCT THE FUEL PUMP WOULD RUN WHILE THE VAN WAS OFF, WE HAD TO DISCONNECT THE POSITIVE ON THE BATTERY SO IT WOULDN'T BURN UP. THEN THE VAN STARTED WITH A DIFFERENT KEY. DROVE IT FOR 4 MINUTES AND THEN PARK AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. WENT TO START IT AGAIN, IT KEPT STALLING. IT STALLED ABOUT 5 TIMES. WE SWITCHED BACK TO THE FIRST KEY THAT WOULD NOT START THE CAR. IT ACTUALLY STARTED TWICE. WE LEFT THE VAN WITH THE AUTO REPAIR PLACE. THEY STATED THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE VAN. WE GOT IT BACK ON OCTOBER 18TH. IT HAS ONLY STARTED ONE TIME SINCE THEN THE FIRST TRY. IT HAS STALLED OCCASIONALLY SINCE THEN. ONCE ON OCT 21ST, THE BRAKING SYSTEM DID NOT ENGAGE WHILE THE VAN WAS BEING BACK OUT. ONCE BEFORE THE ISSUES STARTED TO HAPPEN, THE GAS PUMP DID NOT STOP AND THE FUEL OVER FLOWED.

THIS IS VERY UNSAFE TO HAVE IT HAPPEN ON THE HIGHWAY. IF THIS WOULD HAVE CUT OFF ON THE INTERSTATE IN THE FAST LANE, IT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD NEWS.

DEALERSHIP FELT IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER MY VEHICLE PROTECTION PLAN. MY CAR WAS GIVEN BACK TO ME APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS LATER. MY HUSBAND PICKED UP THE CAR AND WITHIN 4 HOURS, CAR GAVE DIFFICULTY STARTING AND STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT A MAJOR INTERSECTION. DEALERSHIP WAS CONTACTED THE VERY NEXT MORNING AND CAR WAS BROUGHT TO BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. IT WAS THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE TIPM OF THE CAR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS UNFORTUNATELY IS NOT COVERED. MY ISSUE IS THAT IF THE CAR IS STALLING AT INTERSECTIONS AND POSSIBLY ENDANGERING THE LIFE OF MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR.. HOW CAN THIS NOT BE COVERED? HOW CAN THERE NOT BE A SAFETY RECALL? I ALSO GET AN RANDOM FLICKER OF THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON DASH WITH AUDIO TONE. THESE ISSUES WERE DISCUSSED WITH A MECHANIC AT THE LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP WHEN HAVING A RECALL PERFORMED ON THE "MISFIRE" ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE SOFTWARE WAS UPDATED AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY MORE ISSUES. THAT HAS DEFINITELY NOT BEEN THE CASE. ONE OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED ISSUES OCCURS ON A WEEKLY IF NOT DAILY BASIS. SHE TOLD ME THAT AS SHE WAS GOING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION, IT JUST STALLED ON HER. THANKFULLY, IT WAS ONLY 5 AM AND NOT DURING RUSH HOUR. BEING THE SKEPTICAL GUY I AM, I THOUGH MAYBE SHE HAD HIT THE KEY SOMEHOW AND SHUT IT DOWN. THEN IT HAPPENED TO ME AND I WAS NEARLY REAR-ENDED. I CHECKED IT OUT AND DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING, BUT FROM THAT DAY FORTH, IT BECAME HARD TO START AT RANDOM TIMES. SOMETIMES WHEN WE TURN THE KEY, THE IGNITION WILL CRANK, BUT THE ENGINE WON'T START AND WE'LL HAVE TO TURN THE KEY OFF TO MAKE IT STOP TURNING OVER. OTHER TIMES, IT WILL ATTEMPT TO START, OR EVEN START, THEN IMMEDIATELY STALL. EVENTUALLY, AND SOMETIMES AFTER 8-10 ATTEMPTS, IT WILL START AND RUN UNTIL THE NEXT TIME WE PARK IT. EVER SINCE I CHECKED IT OUT, I HAVE NOTICED THAT, AT TIMES, YOU CAN'T HEAR THE HUM OF THE FUEL PUMP WHEN YOU TURN THE KEY, WHILE OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T SEEM TO STOP MAKING NOISE. JUST THIS MORNING, I LEFT TO GO TO WORK, ONLY TO FIND THAT THE VAN WON'T START. APPARENTLY, ONE OF THE OTHER OBVIOUS SIGNS OF A BAD TIPM IS THE OCCASIONAL DEAD BATTERY....CAUSED BY A FUEL PUMP THAT THE TIPM FUEL RELAY FAILS TO SHUT OFF.AT THIS POINT, MY VAN HAS BEEN SITTING SINCE OCTOBER OF 2016, AS WE CANNOT AFFORD THE HIGH REPAIR COST. THE REPAIR ESTIMATE THAT I WAS QUOTED FOR THE TIPM WILL COST AROUND $1100. HAD THIS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY CHRYSLER, I MAY HAVE SAVED WHAT I SPENT ON BATTERIES AND THE ALTERNATOR.

HAD TO TAKE IT TO A DIFFERENT MECHANIC BECAUSE IT WOULD TAKE THEM AT LEAST 2 WEEKS TO GET ONE IN.SO AROUND $500.00 FOR THE PUMP. A FEW DAYS LATER AGAIN HARD TO START, IT SEEMS LIKE IF THERE WERE A LOT OF MOISTURE IN THE AIR OR RAIN IT WAS WORSE. SO YESTERDAY WENT OUT AND WAS COMPLETELY DEAD! GOT A JUMP IT FINALLY STARTED. DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY TIPM MODULE. DOING SOME RESEARCH, NHTSA HAS PREVIOUSLY RECALLED A VERY SIMILAR TIPM IN THE GRAND CHEROKEE AND DURANGO, ESSENTIALLY ALLOWING CHRYSLER TO RECALL THE VEHICLES AND INSTALL A NEW RELAY THAT BYPASSES THE TIPM AND ALLOWS FUEL TO FLOW. I ENCOURAGE NHTSA TO EXPAND THIS RECALL TO ALL AFFECTED 2010+ CHRYSLER VEHICLES WITH TIPMS IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS. I AM VERY LUCKY THAT I WASN'T STRANDED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED. THEY HAVE SEEN IT IN ACTION (ACTUALLY CAME TO ME BECAUSE THEY ARE TOTALLY STUMPED TOO), BUT CANNOT REPLICATE IT. AS SOON AS I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME, IT WAS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING (CRANK BUT NOT START). EVENTUALLY, IT STARTED BUT, LATER IN THE DAY, IT WOULD NOT START AT ALL. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND MADE ARRANGEMENTS FOR IT TO BE TOWED IN AGAIN. EVENTUALLY, THE SERVICE GUY CALLS BACK AND SAYS THEY ARE HAVING TROUBLE PINPOINTING THE PROBLEM. BEFORE THIS POINT I HAD RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND DISCOVERED THE MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE TIPM MODULE. THE NEXT MORNING HE CALLS MY WIFE AND TELLS HER THAT WE NEED A NEW TIPM MODULE AND IT'S GOING TO COST $1200 TO REPLACE IT. SHE TOLD HIM THAT WE WOULD PAY FOR THE TIPM MODULE PROVIDED THEY DEDUCTED THE COST OF THE NEW FUEL PUMP WHICH WE BELIEVE WAS REPLACED IN ERROR. SERVICE GUY WAS ADAMANT THAT FUEL PUMP WAS BAD AND THAT IT HAD TO BE REPLACED. HE SAID THEY HAD ISOLATED THE PUMP AND CONFIRMED THAT IT HAD POWER COMING TO IT BEFORE DIAGNOSING THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS MAY BE TRUE BUT I HAVE ZERO FAITH THAT THIS GUY WAS TELLING ME THE TRUTH. I HAVE READ SEVERAL REPORTS ON THE INTERNET WHERE PEOPLE HAD THEIR FUEL PUMP REPLACED IN ERROR. I EVENTUALLY WENT TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE WAS ALSO INSISTENT THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THE TIPM MODULE. I ALSO ASKED HIM IF THEY HAD REPLACED MULTIPLE TIPM MODULES AND HE ACTED AS IF THIS WAS A VERY RARE REPAIR; HOWEVER, WHEN HE INSINUATED THAT MY FUEL PUMP AND TIPM HAD FAILED SIMULTANEOUSLY, HE ACTED AS IF HE HAD SEEN THIS SEVERAL TIMES?! MY CENTRAL CONCERN IS THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS OF THE TIPM MODULE FAILING ABRUPTLY AT HIGHWAY SPEED.

THE CODE THEY KEPT COMING UP WAS A GENERAL CODE OF "MISFIRE" SO DODGE CONVINCED US TO GET THE SPARK PLUGS FIXED AND TO DO FUEL CLEANER TO OUR FUEL TANK BECAUSE IT WAS "PROBABLY THAT". AFTER THE FIXES WERE MADE AS A RESULT OF WHAT DODGE TOLD US TO DO, THE SAME PROBLEMS CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE NEXT SYMPTOM THAT EXHIBITED WAS THAT I WOULD TRY TO START THE CAR AND IT WOULD TURN OVER, BUT SOUND AS IF IT WAS OUT OF GAS. IT WOULD EVENTUALLY START. FINALLY IT GOT TO THE POINT THAT IT WOULDN'T START AT ALL. TESTING SHOWED THAT THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. IT WAS RECHARGED AND THE VEHICLE DRIVEN AND TESTED TO DETERMINE THAT THE BATTERY WAS HOLDING A CHARGE, AND THAT THE ALTERNATOR WAS NOT THE ISSUE. THROUGH DIFFERENT TESTING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ISSUE WITH TIPM. THE FACT THAT I AM GOING TO BE TASKED WITH A $1500 REPAIR ON A CAR THAT I STILL OWE $14,000 ON IS RIDICUOUS. THE TIPM WAS REPLACED UNDER THE AFTER MARKET WARRANTY THAT WE PAID FOR BUT WHAT OTHER DAMAGE COULD THIS PART HAVE CAUSED TO OUR VEHICLE? IT CONTROLS EVERYTHING THE CAR DOES FOR THE MOST PART. VEHICLE WOULD LOSE ALL ENGINE POWER WHILE ACCELERATING TO SPEED AT RANDOM TIMES (MAKING THE VEHICLE BOGS DOWN) MAKING THE DRIVER AND ANY PASSENGERS GET THROWN FORWARD AND THEN BE THROWN BACK WHEN ENGINE POWER WOULD COME BACK. VEHICLE WAS ALSO GIVING ME PROBLEMS WITH THE AUTOMATIC SIDE DOORS NOT OPENING AND CLOSING AND THE HVAC SYSTEM WOULD COME ON BY ITS SELF AT RANDOM TIMES. THE DEALER REPLACED THE BATTERY (THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR) STATING THAT WAS THE REASON FOR ALL OF THE PROBLEMS I WAS HAVING. AFTER GETTING VEHICLE BACK EVERYTHING WAS GOOD FOR A FEW DAYS THEN WENT BACK TO DOING ALL OF THE SAME PROBLEMS WITHIN A FEW DAY OF GETTING VEHICLE BACK FORM DEALER. TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER FOR THE 2ND TIME AND THEY REPLACED THE PCM (2ND TIME THE PCM HAD BEEN REPLACE SINCE PURCHASED 12/31/2011) & THROTTLE BODY (THAT I HAD TO PAY THE DEDUCTIBLE). VEHICLE WAS STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS SO I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THE 3RD TIME WITHIN A 18 DAY PERIOD. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT I COULD BE THE TIPM BUT THEY WOULD HAVE TO SEE IT ACT UP BEFORE THEY COULD REPLACE THE PART, DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE TIPM WAS THE CAUSE OF ALL THE PROBLEMS. THE TIPM WAS REPLACED (HAD TO PAY FOR PARTIAL OF THE COST) AND EVERYTHING WAS WORKING AGAIN. I FEEL THAT EVEN WITH THE TIPM REPLACED THAT I COULD STILL HAVE GOTTEN A POORLY MADE PART AS A REPLACEMENT. I FEEL AT TIME WHILE DRIVING THAT SOME OF THE PROBLEMS ARE STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN, LIKE THE SLIDING DOOR NOT WORKING AND THE HVAC SYSTEM TURNING ON BY ITS SELF. IN AUGUST 2014 OUR DODGE GRAND CARAVAN (2011) BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS STARTING UP IMMEDIATELY. THIS CONTINUED AND PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE AS TIME WENT ON. WE WERE FORCED TO TRY AND COAX THE VAN TO START BY TURNING THE IGNITION BACK AND FORTH FROM ACCY (ACCESSORY) TO START REPEATEDLY, AT TIMES FOR UP TO 30-45 MINUTES BEFORE IT WOULD START. WE EXPERIENCED THE VAN'S ENGINE SHUTTING OFF FOR NO REASON AT STOPLIGHTS AND IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. AT ONE POINT, THE FUEL PUMP WOULD NOT TURN OFF EVEN THOUGH THE VAN WAS OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. 2011 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN 3.6L - PROBLEMS BEGIN AROUND SEPTEMBER WITH ISSUES CRANKING THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE WOULD TURN OVER BUT IT WAS HAVING TROUBLE PICKING UP THE FUEL. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS THE VAN WOULD START AND RUN FINE IN THE BEGINNING. THE ISSUE PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE AND MORE COMPLEX. ON SEVERAL OCCASION WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE LOST FUEL PRESSURE AND STALLED MOMENTARILY , THEN PICKED UP FUEL AGAIN. IN NOVEMBER THE FUEL PUMP BEGIN NOT SHUTTING OFF AFTER THE IGNITION HAD BEEN SWITCHED OFF AND OTHER TIMES IT WOULD NOT PUMP AT ALL. AROUND THE FIRST OF JANUARY THE VEHICLE STRANDED US ON VACATION FOR 7 HOURS ONLY TO CRANK ONCE WE JUMPED THE VAN WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. AFTER THAT THE ONLY WAY I COULD START THE VEHICLE IN THE MORNING IS BY JUMPING IT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS WEEK, THINKING THAT THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE FUEL PUMP I REPLACED IT ($300.00 PARTS ONLY) AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. THE FUEL PUMP FUSE (M25) WAS NOT BLOWN BUT THERE WAS NO POWER ON IT. I BYPASSED THE FUEL PUMP FUSE WITH THE REAR POWER ACCESSORY FUSE (M7) AND THE PUMP CAME ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH. WHILE THE FUSE IS BYPASSED THE VEHICLE STARTS AND RUNS FINE. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE IT APPEARS THAT I MAY HAVE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TIPM. HOPING FOR A RECALL TO HELP WITH THIS COSTLY ISSUE. *TR

FOR 1 MONTH THE VEHICLE WAS DIFFICULT TO START. IT WOULD CRANK JUST FINE, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT 'IGNITE' (ESPECIALLY WHEN COLD.) THE VEHICLE WOULD FINALLY START AFTER 5-10 LONG ATTEMPTS (TURNING THE ENGINE OVER AND OVER AND THEN TURNING THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION BEFORE TRYING AGAIN.) THIS DIFFICULT STARTUP ISSUE LASTED FOR 4 WEEKS. AT THAT POINT THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO STALL AFTER RUNNING FOR 10 - 20 MINUTES (SOMETIMES WHILE DRIVING.) FINALLY, AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE ONE EVENING, THE FUEL PUMP CONTINUED TO RUN AFTER THE ENGINE WAS SHUT OFF AND THE KEY WAS REMOVED. IT WASN'T NOTICED RIGHT AWAY, SO BY MORNING THE BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. ALL MY RESEARCH INDICATED THE FUEL RELAY IS FAULTY. BUT THE RELAY IS BUILT INTO THE TIPM AND THERE IS NO EASY FIX. THIS SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING ON ALL 2011 CHRYSLER/DODGE VEHICLES AND THERE IS EVEN A RECALL ON THE DODGE DURANGO FOR THE ISSUE. THIS FAULTY TIPM NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND REPLACED. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS SUGGESTED THAT I GET THE RELAY 'FIXED" USING THE FIX MENTIONED IN THE DURANGO RECALL. THE SERVICE ADVISER SUGGESTED IT WOULD BE AROUND $400 (NO GUARANTEE) AND THAT IT WOULD BE REIMBURSED IF THE RECALL WAS EXTENDED TO MY MAKE OF VEHICLE AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE. THE PART IS AROUND $1200 TO REPLACE, IF YOU CAN EVEN FIND ONE. CHRYSLER/DODGE HAS RECALLED THIS IN VARIOUS OTHER VEHICLES BUT STILL REFUSES TO RECALL IT IN THE 2011-2012 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN. WE HAVE FRIENDS WHO ALSO HAVE A 2011 GRAND CARAVAN AND WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS BEFORE US. THE TECH WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE IT AND SAID WE WOULD TROUBLE SHOOT IT. A WEEK LATER THEY CALLED AND SAID IT IS MORE THEN LIKELY THE TIPM CAUSING THE PROBLEM AND THE PART IS BACKORDER NATIONALLY AND WOULD COST ME $1037 PLUS TAX FOR THE PARTS AND LABOR.
