The Dodge Ram 1500 (now Ram 1500) has evolved from a tough workhorse into a refined full-size truck competing directly with Ford and Chevrolet. With 26,912 complaints and 88 reported deaths, the Ram has had reliability challenges alongside its strong points. The HEMI V8 and coil-spring rear suspension set it apart, but certain years require careful consideration.

Dodge Ram 1500 Years to Avoid

The 2005 Ram 1500 is the worst model year, with dashboard cracking, TIPM electrical failures, and premature front-end wear. The 2003-2008 models had transmission issues with the 545RFE and 45RFE automatics that caused harsh shifting and premature failure. The 2009-2012 Rams experienced TIPM failures causing random stalling, fuel pump issues, and electrical malfunctions. The 2013-2018 models saw improvement but still had occasional TIPM complaints. Avoid the 2003-2010 Ram 1500 unless you can verify TIPM health and transmission condition.

Best Dodge Ram 1500 Years

The 2014-2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel aside, represents the best of the previous generation with sorted-out issues and the smooth-riding coil-spring suspension. The 2019-2023 redesigned Ram 1500 shows excellent early reliability with improved build quality. The 1994-2001 second-generation Rams with the Magnum V8 are durable workhorses.
