Pinion nut became loose. It was caught before it totally fell off, however if it did fall off the rear axle could possible seize up and cause loss of control of the vehicle. This is a 2002 Dodge Ram with the 9.25" rear axle and they appear to still have issues to this day with that axle model. The recall Dodge had in 2009/10 does not even begin to cover the number of Dodge Ram/Dakota vehicles with this issue. The axle in this vehicle was replaced in 2009 for another issue with an axle retainer clip falling off and causing the internal assembly to grind on the boss for the axle. So as the original owner, and with only 137,140 miles on the vehicle in 19 years, it has had multiple problems fixed under warranty, including total axle replacement and now it will have rebuilt again. There should be a real safety concern for all Dodge pickups with the 9.25" rear axle and a recall for every one of them, not just 2009/10. This has been happening for 20 years. THE PINION WAS THEN ABLE TO SLIDE BACK AND LOCK THE DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER CAUSING THE REAR AXLE AND TIRES TO LOCK IN PLACE, THE DEALER EXPLAINED THIS IS A PROBLEM AND THEY ACTUALLY RECALLED THE 2005 MODEL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. BECAUSE I WAS NEVER MADE AWARE THAT THIS NEEDED TO BE CHECKED, SEVERE DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED WHICH WILL COST SEVERAL THOUSAND TO FIX. I WAS FORTUNATE THIS HAPPENED ON A SIDE ROAD GOING 30 MPH, IF THIS HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY OR WORSE YET WHILE HAULING A TRAILER, CHANCES ARE A MAJOR ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED (SERIOUS SAFETY RISK). THERE NEEDS TO BE SOME KIND OF NOTIFICATION TO OTHER RAM TRUCK OWNERS THAT THIS MAY OCCUR AND THE SIMPLE FIX OR MAINTENANCE THAT IS NEEDED.

SUDDENLY, IN PARK, THE TRUCK BEGAN ROLLING DOWN A VERY SLIGHT GRADE. IT DRUG MY FRIEND WHO WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE TRUCK. IT ROLLED ABOUT 25 YARDS UNTIL IT HIT A PARKED CAR. THE MOTHER OPENED THE PASSENGER DOOR, INSERTED THE IGNITION KEY INTO THE IGNITION SWITCH, TURNED THE KEY AS THE MOTHER WAS TRYING TO ACTIVATE THE AIR CONDITIONER AND COOL THE VEHICLE DOWN BEFORE HER HUSBAND CAME OUT TO DRIVE THEM HOME FROM CHURCH.THE VEHICLE WAS IN 1ST GEAR AND LURCHED FORWARD WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED.THE SPEED OF 2 MPH AT TIME OF INCIDENT IS AN APPROXIMATION ONLY. THE MOTHER WAS STRUCK BY THE MOVING VEHICLE WHICH KNOCKED HER CHILD FROM HER ARMS TO THE PAVEMENT. THE CHILD SUFFERED SEVERE HEAD TRAUMA AND WAS REMOVED TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE. THE CHILD LATER DIED IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM. THE ACCIDENTAL DEATH WAS CAUSED BY FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH IGNITION INTERLOCK SAFETY SWITCH, COMPRESSION SPRING, AND ATTENDANT PARTS. THIS IS THE SAME DEFECT INVOLVED IN RECALL NO.14V795000 AND IS AT LEAST THE SECOND DEATH CAUSED BY THIS SAME DEFECT. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER VIA THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WEBSITE AND ADVISED THEM OF MY SITUATION. SADLY, I RECEIVED A RESPONSE STATING THERE WAS NO INFORMATION REGARDING MY ISSUE. I CONDUCTED MY OWN RESEARCH ABOUT THE POSSIBLE DEFECT, AND FOUND THE NHTSA DETAILS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM WITH DODGE RAM TRUCKS. CURRENTLY, THEY ARE ONLY REVIEWING 2008-2014 MODELS. THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE WAS SO BADLY DAMAGED INCLUDING THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SENSORS THAT THE ENTIRE UNIT HAD TO BE REPLACED. ON 12-06-03 MY WIFE AND I RETRIEVED THE TRAILER. THE TRUCK WAS HAVING TROUBLE MAINTAINING EXPRESSWAY SPEEDS INTO A HEADWIND ON THIS TRIP. UPON ARRIVAL AT OUR HOME 265 MILES LATER WE AGAIN SMELLED THE OVERHEATED REAR AXLE FLUID. I AM THE OWNER OF A DODGE 2002 TRUCK. IT HAS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM THAT THE DEALERS ARE TELLING EVERYONE JUST TO "HOLD ON" BASICALLY, WHEN THE TRUCK SHIFTS INTO 2ND GEAR IT JOLTS AND SURGES FORWARD. I WAS TOLD YESTERDAY BY RICK GLADWELL DODGE IN MOREHEAD CITY, NC. (252-247-2003) THAT IT IS MORE OF AN INCONVIENENCE TO THE DRIVER RATHER THAN A MECHANICAL FAILURE WAITING TO HAPPEN. THEY CLAIM THAT IT IS A MODULE THAT NEEDS REPROGRAMMING AND THAT UNTIL THE EPA APPROVES IT THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH THEY CAN DO. DT
HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. SOME HAVEN'T BEEN REPORTED TO THE DEALER YET. THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE. IT SHIFTS HARD AT ABOUT 2200 RPM'S OR AROUND 25-30MPH. DEALER CAN'T DUPLICATE. I'VE HAD OTHER PROBLEMS THAT WERE NOT LISTED INCLUDING BRAKES AND ALTERNATOR. THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR MIRROR HAS RECENTLY BROKEN AND NOW FLOPS IN THE WIND ON THE FREE WAY AND IS UNUSABLE. I FILED A CLAIM WITH MY INSURANCE COMPANY, THEN FOUND THAT IT WAS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH OTHER OWNERS OF THE SAME VEHICLE. THE VENTILATION FROM THE PANEL IS ASLO SENT TO THE FLOOR VENTS DESPITE THE DIAL BEING SET TO "PANEL" NOT "FLOOR". THE TAILGATE CABLES ARE MISMATCHED. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NORMAL. I WON'T PLACE ANYTHING ON THE TAILGATE IN FEAR THAT THE CABLE MIGHT BREAK. THE EXTERIOR TURN SIGNALS ARE NOT SYNCHED WITH THE DISPLAYED TRUN SIGNALS. THE SIMULTANEOUS FLASH IS NOT THERE. ALSO, THE ALTERNATOR WAS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE AT AROUND 600 MILES. IT WAS CAUSING A HIGH PITCHED SQUEAKING SOUND SIMILAR TO WHAT A DEFECTIVE BELT MAY SOUND LIKE. IT WAS REPLACED, BUT STARTED DOING IT AGAIN AT 6750 MILES. THE HOOD HAS SLIGHT DENTS IN IT LIKE SOMEONE HIT IT WITH A BALL PEN HAMMER. APPARENTLY CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS. I'LL BE TAKING IT IN THE FIRST CHANCE I GET TO TRY TO HAVE IT FIXED. I'VE HAD THIS TRUCK A 3 DIFFERENT DEALERS IN HOPE THAT THE NEXT ONE WOULD BE MORE HELP THAN THE PREVIOUS. NO SUCH LUCK. I'VE HAD TO TAKE TIME OFF FROM WORK (ABOUT 6 DAYS TOTAL; HAD TO WAIT AT DEALERSHIP SINCE IT WAS AN OUT OF TOWN PURCHASE ) AND RENT CARS 5 TIMES WHILE HAVING IT WORKED ON AT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP IN ORDER TO GET TO WORK. I'VE HAD NOTHING BUT BAD LUCK WITH THIS VEHICLE. DAIMLER-CHRYSLER HAS DREADFUL QUALITY CONTROL AND I CAN'T SAY MUCH MORE FOR THE DEALERS. I HOPE I CAN GET THE ISSUES WITH THIS TRUCK RESOLVED SOMEDAY. CONSUMER STATES REAR DIFFERENTIAL BEGAN MAKING LOUD PINGING SOUNDS AS IF METAL WAS COOLING AFTER THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TOWING A TRAILER FOR THREE HOURS ON THE HIGHWAY. PAINT WAS BUBBLING OFF OF THE DIFFERNETIAL. DEALER FOUND THE ENTIRE DIFFERENTIAL AND REAR AXLE BEARINGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TT

6-11-2002 TRUCK DIED OUT IN MOTION. 6-15-2002 BELLS IN TRUCK CAME ON, NO DUMMY LIGHTS LASTED 10-15 MIN THEN STOPPED ON ITS OWN, ALSO THIS DAY TRUCK DIED OUT ONCE IN REVERSE, 3 TIMES IN DRIVE. ON THIS DAY I HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALER. 6-22-2002 TRUCK STUCK IN REVERSE. ENGINE REVED IN REVERSE AS IF IN NUETRAL BUT WAS CLEARLY IN REVERSE. CAR WAS DRIVEN TO DEALER THAT DAY. 6-29-2002 STUCK IN REVERSE AGAIN. DEALER CONTACTED - I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT A SERVICE MANAGER ON 7-1-2002 , I OBVIOUSLY HAVE AN INTERMITENT PROBLEM AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE UNTIL THEY CAN PROVE THERE IS A PROBLEM. *AK
RIGHT REAR AXLE BROKE WHILE DRIVING 40-45 MPH. DEALER AND MANUFACTURER HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED. *AK CONSUMER SENT BROKEN SHAFT TO DEALER FOR TESTING, BUT DEALER DENIED ANY CLAIMS, STATING THAT IT WAS DRIVER NEGLECT, ONE PERSON WAS INJURED IN ACCIDENT CAUSED BY THE DEFECTIVE REAR AXLE. *TT
WHILE TRAVELING THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO PULL 20 FOOT WILDERNESS TRAVEL TRAILER. THE FIRST AND SECOND GEAR PERFORMED WELL, BUT THE VEHICLE SPEED SPEED DECREASED WHEN IN 3RD AND 4TH GEAR. *YH *SCC
