A FEW YEARS AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE DASH BEGAN TO DEVELOP CRACKS AND HOLES. THIS HAS GOTTEN WORSE AND WORSE TO THE POINT WHERE A DASH COVER HAD TO BE PURCHASED TO AVOID THINGS FALLING DOWN BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. CURRENTLY, THERE IS MORE MISSING THAN STILL IN PLACE IN THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM IN THIS GENERATION, AND DODGE HAS NOT ADDRESSED IT, OTHER THAN TO CLAIM IT IS STRICTLY COSMETIC. THE PLASTIC PIECES ARE EXTREMELY SHARP, AND HAVE RESULTED IN A NUMBER OF SUPERFICIAL CUTS WHEN WORKING ON THE DEFROST VENTS, OR WHEN ADJUSTING THE CARPETED DASH COVER. OTHER PIECES HAVE FALLEN INTO THE VENTS AND THEN BEEN EJECTED INTO BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER'S FACES WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER/HEATER ARE TURNED ON. PIECES OF PLASTIC RATTLE BEHIND THE DASH, AND HAVE FALLEN INTO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONTROLS AND RADIO HARNESS, POSSIBLY BEING THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE OF THE FRONT SPEAKERS (BUT NOT VERIFIED) IF THEY HAVE CUT THE WIRES. IF THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS, THE PERDON IN THE SEAT IS LIKELY TO BE BLINDED OR DISFIGURED FROM THE AMOUNT OF DANGEROUSLY SHARP SHRAPNEL, ASSUMING IT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN CUT AND RENDERED USELESS. REPLACEMENT DASHES FROM DODGE ARE PRICED AT NEARLY $1,000, WHICH IS A RIDICULOUSLY EXORBITANT AMOUNT TO EXPECT CUSTOMERS TO PAY IN ORDER TO FIX A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT INSTALLED BY THE COMPANY. OVERLAYS OF DECENT QUALITY COST NEARLY A THIRD OF THAT.

THE FAILURE CAUSED THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PIECES FROM THE DASH BOARD FELL INTO THE AIR VENTS CAUSING THE A/C UNIT TO MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE ENGINE AND DASHBOARD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALSO, THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000.

I AM THE OWNER OF 2002 DODGE RAM 1500 PICKUP TRUCK AND RECENTLY TOOK IT TO THE SHOP FOR A MUFFLER REPAIR. THE TECHNICIAN THAT WAS DOING THE REPAIR NOTIFIED ME OF THE EXTENSIVE CORROSION THAT WAS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE VEHICLES FRAME JUST UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE AFT DOOR. THE CORROSION IS THE WORST I HAVE EVER SEEN AND HAS DEEMED THE VEHICLE NOT DRIVABLE. I HAD JUST PULLED MY CAMPER THE WEEK BEFORE WITH MY WIFE AND 3 KIDS IN THE CAR. THE FRAME IS LITERALLY HANGING ON BY A PIECE OF METAL 3 INCHES WIDE, THE BOTTOM AND SIDES OF THE FRAME ARE COMPLETELY GONE IN A 16 INCH SECTION. IN MY OPINION IT IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE FOR A VEHICLE THAT IS ONLY 12 YEARS OLD TO BE SCRAPPED BECAUSE OF DEFECTIVE METAL. NOT TO MENTION THAT IF I HAD NOT HAD MY MUFFLER REPAIRED I NEVER WOULD HAVE SEEN THE CORROSION AND WOULD HAVE PUT MY FAMILIES LIVES AT RISK. JUST WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PHASE "RAM TOUGH" I'VE HAD MY 2002 DODGE RAM 1500 SINCE IT WAS NEW; I HAD INSTALLED A CARPETED DASH COVER A FEW MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT THE TRUCK SO THE DASHBOARD WOULD BE PROTECTED FROM THE SUN. I EVEN INSTALLED A RETRACTABLE ACCORDION STYLE SUNSHADE. IN MID 2005, I WAS CLEANING THE INTERIOR AND REMOVED THE COVER ONLY TO FIND THREE CRACKS IN MY DASHBOARD, SINCE THEN I HAVE NOTED MORE AND MORE CRACKS WITH VERY SHARP EDGES TO THE POINT THAT NOW I HAVE HOLES WITH SHARP EDGES AND PIECES OF DASHBOARD FALLING DOWN INSIDE THE A/C DUCTS AND INTO THE WIRING OF THE DASH AREA, ALSO I SHOULD MENTION THAT SINCE THESE PIECES HAVE FALLEN INTO THE DUCTS, MY A/C UNIT IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY IN THAT THE INTERNAL DOORS TO DIVERT HOT AND COLD AIR ARE BEING BLOCKED BY THESE BROKEN PIECES AND NO LONGER OPEN OR CLOSE. FLORIDA REPORTS MANY CRACKED AND COLLAPSED DASHBOARDS PRIMARILY ON DODGE RAM TRUCKS. ONE LADIES DASH COLLAPSED WHILE DRIVING WITH HER CHILD AT NIGHT WHICH SHUT OFF ALL LIGHTS AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. MANY PROBLEMS SUBMITTED RO [email protected] WHO HAS COMPILED MANY COMLAINTS. DEMNSTRATION SHOWED PIECES OF DASHBOARD CUTTING PAPER LIKE A RAZOR. THIS MAKES IT A SAFETY DEFECT AS WELL AS INFERIOR MATERIEL USED FOR THESE DASH BOARDS.. SO FAR DODGE HAS ACCEPTED NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECT. I OWN A 2002 DODGE RAM 1500. AROUND JULY OF 2006 I NOTICED A CRACK DEVELOPING ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE DASH BOARD THAT RAN FROM THE WINDSHIELD TO THE AIRBAG COVER. SINCE THAT TIME THE DASH HAS CRACKED IN 7 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS INCLUDING THE PASSENGER SIDE DEFROST COVER WHICH FELL INTO THE VENT. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SHORT OF REPLACING THE DASH AT A COST OF $1000.00. THERE HAVE BEEN RASHES OF THIS TYPE OF COMPLAINT ON '01 DODGE RAM 1500'S, I WOULD LIKE MY '02 DODGE RAM TO BE INCLUDED IN ANY SETTLEMENT, SHOULD THERE BECOME A CLASS ACTION EVENT BROUGHT AGAINST DAIMLERCHRYSLER. HERE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA THE SUN DEGADES MANY ITEMS OF PLASTIC TYPE MANUFACTURE. I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT HAS CAUSED MY PROBLEM WITH THE DETERIORATION OF MY DASHBOARD, IT COULD ALSO BE FROM SOMETHING ELSE IN NATURE. I TAPED OVER THE CRACKS WITH PLASTIC TAPE, AND BOUGHT A CARPETED DASH COVER FROM JCWHITNEY, MADE FOR MY '02 DODGE PICK UP. IN THE MEAN TIME THE LITTLE GRILLE AREA OVER THE CENTER PASSENGER DEFROST VENT DETERIORATED TO THE EXTENT THAT IT FELL INTO THE VENT. I FISHED IT OUT, BUT IT BROKE IN MY HANDS IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO RETRIEVE IT. BY COVERING THE DASH, I HAVE NOT SEEN A PROGRESSION OF THE CRACKING, BUT I HAVE TO LOOK AT THAT "4X4" (APPROX.) SIZED HOLE EVERY TIME I GOT TO DRIVE MY TRUCK. ALSO, AS REPORTED ON LOCAL TV THE LAST TWO (2) NIGHTS, AT LEAST ONE OF THESE FAULTY DASH BOARDS HAS FAILED, AND IS CAUSING HEAD LITES TO GO OFF ON THEIR OWN WHILE DRIVING. WHILE DRIVING AT INTERSTATE SPEED (70 MPH), AND SWITCHING LANES WHILE ON A BRIDGE, THE EXCESSIVE BOUNCING AND BAD SUSPENSION OF TRUCK MAKE ME LOSE CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK PULLED TO THE RIGHT AND THE REAR END OF THE TRUCK ENDED UP SPINNING AROUND, MAKING A COMPLETE 180--- ON A BRIDGE!! I ENDED UP SLAMMING INTO THE SAFETY RAIL OF THE BRIDGE. AND THE AIR BAGS DIDN'T GO OFF. LUCKILY, I WASN'T INJURED. WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE, CONSUMER DISCOVERED THAT THE BED OF THE TRUCK HAD COME IN CONTACT WITH THE CAB AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO IT, CONSUMER BELIEVES IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED DURING REGULAR DRIVING, POSSIBLY WHILE IN THE MOUNTAINS, THE GENERAL MANAGER OFFERED TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES, HOWEVER CONSUMER DECLINED TO HAVE A 30,000 DOLLAR TRUCK REPAIRED, CONSUMER WAS THEN INFORMED THAT THE DAMAGE WAS MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY HIM DRIVING EXCESSIVELY, THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES.*JB
