THE CONTACT CALLED FREEHOLD DODGE RAM AT 732-462-1600 AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL AND THE PART WAS NOT REPLACEABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. DASHBOARD DISINTEGRATING INTO HUNDREDS OF EXTREMELY POINTED AND SHARP SHARDS OF HEAVY GAUGE PLASTIC SOME OF CONSIDERABLE MASS THAT POSE A SEVERE RISK IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION. DAILY REMOVE PIECES OF DASH AS THEY BREAK FREE. MANY ARE HEAVY ENOUGH AND POINTED ENOUGH TO SEVERELY INJURE DRIVER OR OCCUPANTS EVEN UNDER SEVERE BRAKING LET ALONE A CRASH WITH AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AT SUPERSONIC SPEEDS. UNDER SEVERE BRAKING THESE SHARDS BREAK FREE AND FLY FORWARD TOWARD THE WINDSHIELD THEN BOUNCE BACK AT THE TERRIFIED OCCUPANTS. WE NOW HAVE TO ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR TO AVOID BEING BLINDED BY A FLYING PIECE OF DEBRIS FROM THE DASH. EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE HITS A SMALL BUMP ANOTHER PIECE OR TWO BREAKS OFF OR A NEW CRACK APPEARS THREATENING TO RELEASE ANOTHER SHARP FLYING OBJECT INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THIS IS NOT JUST COSMETIC!! THIS IS DANGEROUS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS AS A COSMETIC ISSUE BUT NOW IS DIFFERENT.

EXTENSIVE CORROSION WAS REMOVED BETWEEN THE FRONT BED MOUNTING POINT AND RIGHT SIDE REAR SHOCK ABSORBER MOUNTING POINT LEAVING A 6" X 2" HOLE. IDENTIFIED ON 11/10/2016 FURTHER ASSESSMENT WILL TAKE PLACE ON 11/12/2016 BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC.

VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN I IDENTIFIED A LARGE CRACK HAD FORM IN THE CENTER OF THE DASHBOARD ABOVE THE RADIO FROM FRONT TO REAR. AS I DRIVE EACH DAY I HAVE MORE AND MORE CRACKS FORMING IN ALL DIRECTIONS WITH SHARP/ANGULAR PIECES UNEXPECTEDLY FALLING INTO THE DASH AND THE CAB OF THE TRUCK. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY PASSENGERS ESPECIALLY WHEN I CONSIDER WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN THE AIRBAG DEPLOYS AS DESIGNED, CAUSING THE DASH TO EXPLODE AND SEND PROJECTILES THROUGHOUT THE CAB. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER BACK IN 2013 AND WAS TOLD BY A REPRESENTATIVE THAT THIS DEFECT IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE BECAUSE OF THE TIME SINCE THE PURCHASE DATE. SINCE THEN THE DAMAGE HAS BECOME MORE SEVERE AND I AM CONCERNED THAT PIECES FALLING BEHIND THE DASH THEY WILL INTERFERE WITH MY ABILITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE (ACCELERATION/BRAKING). THESE CONCERNS REPRESENT SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUES THAT WERE NOT DISCLOSED TO ME WHEN I PURCHASED BACK IN 2003.

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH OVER A BUMP, THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED AND SOMETHING ON THE FRONT END FELT LOOSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE UPPER BALL JOINT AND STABILIZER BAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE DASHBOARD WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.

CRACKED DASH. LIKE SO MANY OTHER 2003 DODGE RAM 2500 OWNERS, MY VEHICLE HAS DEVELOPED CRACKS ALONG THE DASH FOR NO APPARENT REASON EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS WELL CARED FOR AND MAINTAINED IN PRISTINE CONDITION. THE FIRST HAIRLINE CRACK APPEARED IN 2010 AT THE CENTER OF THE DASH BEGINNING ON THE WINDSHIELD SIDE. OVER TIME THE CRACK HAS PROGRESSED TOWARDS THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TO THE POINT THAT THE DASH HAS COMPLETELY SPLIT IN HALF. TO DATE, TWO ADDITIONAL CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED, ONE SIX INCHES TO THE LEFT OF THE CENTER CRACK AND ANOTHER OVER THE PASSENGER AIRBAG SECTION. WITH SO MANY COMPLAINTS OF CRACKED DASHES, PARTICULARLY WITH THE 2003 MODEL YEAR, IT'S APPARENT THAT A MANUFACTURING FLAW EXISTS AND CHRYSLER SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THIS FACT AND EFFECT REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE DASHES. IS A CRACKED DASH A SAFETY ISSUE? ABSOLUTELY, CONSIDERING THE ADDITIONAL INJURIES THAT CAN BE INFLICTED ON VEHICLE OCCUPANTS IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION AND THE DEPLOYMENT OF AIR BAGS. SINCE CHRYSLER HAS SET A PRECEDENT BY ACKNOWLEDGING THAT A PROBLEM EXISTED WITH CRACKED DASHES ON DODGE RAM MODEL YEARS PRIOR TO 2003 (1998-2002), AND HAS AGREED TO REPLACE THE CRACKED DASHES ON THE PREVIOUS MODEL YEARS, THEN WHY NOT DO THE SAME FOR THE 2003 MODEL YEAR THAT SEEMS TO HAVE THE MOST COMPLAINTS/ISSUES? SO WHAT IF THE CRACKS APPEARED AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED ON THESE VEHICLES; IT'S A MATTER OF INTEGRITY. GIVEN THAT CHRYSLER IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS MANUFACTURER DEFECT, THEY SHOULD ADMIT ACCOUNTABILITY AND DO THE RIGHT THING BY RECALLING THESE VEHICLES AND PROVIDING THE NECESSARY REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE DASHES. *TR

WHILE SEARCHING FOR A FIX FOR MY DASH WHICH JUST CRACKED I FOUND SEVERAL REPORTS OF AFTER THE DASH CRACKED WHERE ELECTRICAL ISSUES ARISE. AS IN HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING AT ALL OR WHEN SWITCHING TO HI BEAM. I ALSO SAW A VIDEO ON THIS ISSUE FROM A NEWS BROADCAST AND WHEN CHRYSLER WAS QUESTIONED ABOUT THIS THERE WAS NEVER ANY RESPONSE WHILE THE PUBLIC WAS REQUESTING A RECALL. FROM WHAT I CAN FIND OUT JUST IN THE HOUR I WAS LOOKING THIS UP THIS WOULD APPLY TO JUST ABOUT EVERY DODGE RAM MADE BETWEEN 1996 AND 2006. MY TRUCK IS GARAGE KEPT AND I KEEP IT IN EXCELLENT CONDITION SO FOR THIS TO HAPPEN DUE TO SITTING IN THE SUN IT'S ENTIRE LIFE I MIGHT UNDERSTAND BUT THERE IS NO WAY THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MINE. MY FATHER WAS A MECHANIC FOR CHRYSLER FOR OVER 20 YEARS AND THIS IS JUST PLAIN CHEAP MADE PRODUCTS. THE DASH ON MY 03 RAM 2500 5.9 DIESEL HAS LITERALLY HAS FALLEN IN ON ITSELF. VERY LARGE SECTIONS OF THE DASH HAVE BROKEN OFF AND HAVE BECOME A SAFETY CONCERN. FOR EXAMPLE, IF AN ACCIDENT WERE TO OCCUR CAUSING THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY, PIECES OF PROJECTILE SHRAPNEL WOULD BE THROWN ALL OVER THE CAB OF THE TRUCK. I'VE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH DODGE, AND NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT THIS ISSUE BECAUSE THE TRUCK IS "OUT-OF-WARRANTY" AND IS CONSIDERED "NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR". THE PARTICULAR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE I SPOKE TO COPPED AN ATTITUDE WITH ME AND REFUSED TO CONNECT ME TO A SUPERVISOR, CITING THAT IT "IS NOT A SUPERVISOR ISSUE". I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO GO FROM HERE. DOES AN ACCIDENT HAVE TO OCCUR IN WHICH PEOPLE ARE MAIMED BY PIECES OF THE DASH IN ORDER FOR DODGE TO DO ANYTHING? I REALLY WOULD HATE TO SEE MY WIFE WITH PIECES OF PLASTIC STICKING OUT OF HER FACE AND SKULL BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT HANDLED IN AN APPROPRIATE MANNER. *TR

PURCHASED THIS 2500 CUMMINS DIESEL NEW- HAVE MAINTAIN REG. MAINTENANCE, KEPT IN GARAGE, NEVER BEEN WRECKED & LOOKS BRAND NEW ON INSIDE. THE PAINT HAS BEGUN TO COME OFF DUE TO THERE BEING A PAINT DEFECT WITH NO/LITTLE CLEAR COAT. IT HAS ALSO BEGUN TO RUST CAUSING A SAFETY HAZARD. THERE HAVE BEEN HUNDREDS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE PAINT ON THIS YEAR TRUCK AND DODGE HAS OMITTED TO THE PAINT DEFECT ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT SITES. I TAKE GREAT IN THIS TRUCKS SAFETY HOWEVER IT IS NOW BEING JEOPARDIZED. I HAVE OWNED TRUCKS LONGER THAN THIS AND NEVER HAD AN ISSUE DUE TO THE PARTICULAR CARE. I HAVE TAKEN THIS TRUCK TO THE PAINT/BODY SHOP AND TO HAVE IT REPAINTED THE SAME COLOR WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $5,000. THIS IS DODGE'S PROBLEM THAT THEY HAVE OPENLY ADMITTED AND NOW NEED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM AT NO EXPENSE TO THE OWNERS. *JS

I HAVE USED A DASHBOARD MAT/COVER IN THE VEHICLE SINCE PURCHASED IN 2002. THE CRACK WAS NOTICED WHEN REMOVING THE DASH MAT COVER TO CLEAN/WIPE DOWN THE DASHBOARD. THE DASHBOARD HAS NOT BEEN SUBJECT TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT FOR THE DURATION OF THE TIME THAT I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE (SINGLE OWNER). SINCE THE INITIAL CRACK IN 2010, THE CONDITION OF THE DASHBOARD HAS CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE. WITH NO INSTANCES OF DIRECT CONTACT OR ACCIDENT, THE SMALL SLITS FOR THE DASHBOARD AIR VENTS HAVE STARTED TO BREAK OFF ENTIRELY, AND FROM TIME TO TIME USE OF THE AIR VENT NEAR THE WINDSHIELD SHOOTS LITTLE BITS OF PLASTIC BACK INTO THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGERS. UPDATED 08/24/11*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED HIS FATHER GRABBED THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD PILLAR HANDHOLD TO ASSIST HIM ENTERING THE VEHICLE. WHEN HE WAS HALFWAY UP THE HANDHOLD, IT GAVE WAY AND HE FELL BACK AGAINST THE DOOR WHICH KEPT HIM FROM FALLING COMPLETELY ON THE PAVEMENT. WHEN THE CONSUMER EXAMINED THE DAMAGE, HE FOUND THE HANDHOLD WAS FORMED WITH THE WINDSHIELD PILLAR TRIM. IT WAS MADE OF PLASTIC WHICH WAS HELD ON WITH TWO 8MM BOLTS. THE BOLTS WERE RECESSED, ONE AT THE TOP OF THE HANDHOLD AND ONE AT THE BOTTOM. BOTH BOLTS WERE STILL ATTACHED; THE TOP BOLT TRIM BASE HAD BROKEN AWAY FROM THE TRIM/HANDHOLD AND STILL HAD THE PLASTIC TRIM BEHIND THE HEAD OF THE BOLT. THE BOTTOM BOLT HAD PULLED COMPLETELY THROUGH THE TRIM/HANDHOLD BASE. THE TRIM/HANDHOLD PULLED SO FAR OUT, THAT IT ALSO BROKE THE DASHBOARD TOP. UPDATED 04/19/12

THE PLASTIC IS BRITTLE AND I AM CONCERNED THAT DURING A CRASH THE PIECES WILL BECOME PROJECTILES AND SHARDS THAT COULD PUNTURE AIRBAGS AND PEOPLE CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY. I CHECKED INTO REPLACING THE PART ONLY TO FIND THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MANY OF THE TRUCK LINES OF DODGE FROM 1998 THROUGH 2006 AND THE REPLACEMENTS ARE OF THE SAME MATERIAL AND WOULD BE PRONE TO CRACK IN SHORT TIME JUST AS THE ORIGINAL DASES HAD. ON 9/20/2008 I NOTICED SOME SMALL CRACKS IN MY DASH. AFTER ABOUT A WEEK THE DASH HAD SEVERAL CRACKS AND THE SMALL ONES WERE NOW LARGE CRACKS GOING FROM THE FRONT OF THE DASH ALL THE WAY TO THE WINDSHIELD. I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME THING HAPPEN TO THE 2ND GENERATION DODGE RAMS FROM 94-02. DODGE HAS ACCEPTED LIABILITY FOR THOSE DASHES CRACKING, WELL THIS IS THE VERY SAME PLASTIC USED IN THOSE TRUCKS. I DON'T THINK DODGE WANTS TO HAVE TO REPLACE ALL OF THESE DASHES FOR THE REASON OF REPUTATION AND COST TO THE COMPANY. I DON'T THINK YOU CAN REALLY PUT A PRICE OF SAFETY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 DODGE RAM 2500. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE PAINT BEGAN TO CHIP ABNORMALLY NEAR THE DRIP RAIL. SEVERAL YEARS AFTER THE REPAIR, THE FAILURE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE BECAUSE THE PAINT BEGAN CHIPPING FROM VARIOUS PARTS OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY WOULD NOT MAKE ANY REPAIRS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED ITS WARRANTY. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 22,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000.

IT DOES THIS WHEN I TURN ON MY A/C IN HOT WEATHER WHEN I CAN HEAR PLASTIC PIECES FALLING DOWN INTO THE DASH. IF THAT FLYING PIECE OF PLASTIC WOULD HAVE HIT ME OR ONE OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS, IT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN INJURY ESPECIALLY IF IT HIT ONE OF US IN THE EYE. I HAVE READ IN MANY ONLINE FORUMS OF OTHER DODGE RAM OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE BUT DODGE WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. ONE OF THE POSTS STATED THE DASHBOARDS ARE MADE OF CHEAP PLASTIC WHICH IS NOT UV RATED. IF MY VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN A TRAFFIC COLLISION, THE BRITTLE DASHBOARD COULD SHATTER LIKE POTATO CHIPS AND FLY THROUGH-OUT THE CABIN AND CAUSE INJURY TO THE OCCUPANTS! I CAN HEAR THE DASH CRACKING OFTEN AND MORE PIECES FALLING DOWN INTO THE VENTS WHICH COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE FANS OR OTHER COMPONENTS. EVEN AFTER CLEANING THE INTERIOR OF MY VEHICLE ON A REGULAR BASIS WITH UV PROTECTANTS, THE DASHBOARD IS STILL DETERIORATING EACH WEEK AND IS RECENTLY GETTING WORSE. WE THE CUSTOMERS HAVE PAID A LOT OF MONEY FOR THESE VEHICLES, YET DODGE WONT EVEN REPLACE A DANGEROUS, BRITTLE DASHBOARD TO MAKE IT SAFER FOR US? I PURCHASED A NEW 2003 DODGE RAM IN EARLY 2003. WITHIN A YEAR, THE DASH TOP CRACKED AND STARTED TO CAVE IN. I FOUND OUT FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE DASH WAS MADE FROM AN INFERIOR PLASTIC MATERIAL AND EVEN IF I ALLOWED THEM TO DO A WARRANTY REPLACEMENT, THE DASH WOULD LIKELY CRACK AGAIN AND THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER FOR ME TO WAIT UNTIL CHRYSLER CAME OUT WITH A BETTER OEM DASH REPLACEMENT. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH SINCE THIS TIME AND HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT CHRYSLER HAS REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT UNTIL RECENTLY. I SEE WHERE SOME PEOPLE (ON THE WWW) ARE NOW REPORTING THAT THEY ARE GETTING SOME OFFERS FROM CHRYSLER TO REPLACE THEIR DASHES WITH A NEWLY IMPROVED DASH AT NO COST TO THE CUSTOMER. I HAVE RECENTLY CONTACTED MY LOCAL DODGE DEALERSHIP (BIG O DODGE OF GREENVILLE , SC, 864 288 5000) AS WELL AS CHRYSLER (800 992 1997) AND WAS TOLD THAT THE ONLY DASH ISSUE THAT CHRYSLER WOULD ACKNOWLEDGE WAS ON THE 98-02 MODEL YEAR TRUCKS. AFTER I MADE REFERENCES TO ALL OF THE INTERNET RESEARCH AS WELL AS TO MY INITIAL DISCUSSION WITH THE DEALERSHIP REGARDING THEIR RECOMMENDATION FOR ME TO WAIT FOR A BETTER DASH TO BE MANUFACTURED (WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL IN THE WARRANTY PERIOD) I WAS PLACED ON HOLD AND THE CHRYSLER REP CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND ARRANGED FOR ME TO HAVE MY DASH REPLACED AT A DISCOUNT, BUT NOT AT CHRYSLER EXPENSE AS IT SHOULD BE SINCE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE CRACKED DASH STEMS FROM AN ACKNOWLEDGED MANUFACTURING FLAW FROM DAY 1 AS I REPORTED TO THE DEALER WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL "NEW". MY RESEARCH HAS ALSO LED ME TO BELIEVE THIS IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO ELECTRICAL COMPONENT DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE FALLING DASH PIECES CUTTING INTO ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS CAUSING PEOPLE TO LOOSE THEIR LIGHTING AT NIGHT, CAUSING SHORTS AND EVEN SMOKE FROM MELTING WIRES WHICH CAUSE SMOKE TO TEMPORARILY BLIND DRIVERS AS THEY TRY TO PULL OVER FOR SAFETY. ON OR ABOUT 10/25/2008 WE NOTICED A CRACK IN THE DASHBOARD OF OUR 2003 DODGE RAM PICKUP. THE CRACK WAS APPROXIMATELY 8 INCHES LONG AND WAS BEGINNING TO CRACK AT DIFFERENT ANGLES. ON 10/28/2008 WE CONTACTED CHRYSLER CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AND WERE ASSIGNED A REFERENCE NUMBER: 18023982. WE WERE ADVISED TO TAKE OUR PROBLEM TO A LOCAL DEALER. WE VISITED SCOTT GOULD, SERVICE MANAGER AT VENICE DODGE IN VENICE, FLORIDA. SCOTT DID NOT EVEN LOOK AT OUR PROBLEM. HE INFORMED US THAT HE KNEW WHERE THE DASHES WERE CRACKING ,WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT COULD DO NOTHING WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM CHRYSLER. WE CALLED THE CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER 1-800-992-1997 AND SPOKE TO A SUZY WHO REFUSED TO SHARE HER LAST NAME. SUZY TALKED TO SCOTT AND THEN CALLED US BACK AND INFORMED US THAT WE COULD HAVE OUR DASH REPLACED FOR 250$. I ASKED HER WHY WE HAD TO PAY TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART. SHE INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL ON THE DEFECTIVE DASHES BECAUSE IT WAS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY DEFECT. ON 11/18/2008 WE HAD THE DEFECTIVE DASH REPLACED AT VENICE DODGE. I HAVE REQUESTED THE OLD CRACKED DASH BUT THEY HAVE NOT YET HONORED THAT REQUEST. THE DASH MATERIAL APPEARS TO BE A HARD PLASTIC APPROXIMATELY 3/16 IN THICK. THE VISIBLE CRACKS APPEARED JAGGED AND SHARP. SHARP ENOUGH THAT UPON IMPACT THEY COULD PUNCTURE AN AIR BAG OR AN INDIVIDUAL CAUSING INJURY, SERIOUS HARM AND/OR DEATH. THE PROBLEM WITH THE DASHES IS NOT AN ISOLATED ONE. IT IS EXTREMELY WIDESPREAD. LET THIS NOT BE THE PROTECTIVE NETTING AT THE HOCKEY ARENA. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION.
