We have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel crew cab pickup that occasionally after hitting a bump or on rough roads the steering mechanism or suspension develops an uncontrollable harmonic vibration with one or the other front wheels bouncing. The only way to stop the vibration is to come to a complete stop. In heavy traffic it could be a serious safety issue. The condition is well known to Chrysler and is commonly called a "Death Wobble". The first incidence on our vehicle was around ten years ago, but newer pickups are reported to have the condition. By replacing just the shock absorbers then it seemed to have helped, but that fix may have been fortuitous. The Dodge service center at that time did know of or maybe did not admit to the issue. Recently we have had the return of a couple episodes of the Death Wobble. The internet has many aftermarket brackets available for the Death Wobble, so, I assume, the condition is well known. Chrysler now has replacement that I was told are stronger (and maybe of a better design), but any pickup of this model without the upgrade is potentially a very dangerous safety hazard. I assume there should have been a recall for this problem, but, from your website, there are no recalls listed for this vehicle. As a side note, the Jeep SUVs have also been reported to have a Death Wobble, but I have no information on whether the wobble with them is caused by the same defect with the steering or suspension systems.
I was driving on I55 this morning and all of a sudden my truck started vibrating really bad, the steering wheel was veering, I had to constantly fight to keep in my lane. And when I touched my brakes it veered. Riding really rough, and has power loss. I took it to the nearest shop and they said my driveshaft was very loose, and that it is affecting everything that I described. The center driveshaft support bearing is also failing.
I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 20 MPH, SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN WHEN I HEARD A LOUD CRACKING SOUND. I PULLED OVER BUT COULD NOT DETERMINE THE SOURCE OF THE SOUND. I DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE HOUSE TO INVESTIGATE FURTHER. ON MY WAY HOME, I STOPPED AT A COFFEE SHOP AND WHEN TRIED TO BACK UP INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE PASSENGER FRONT WHEEL BROKE OFF. IT COMPLETELY FELL OFF!! I AM VERY HAPPY WE WERE MOVING AT ABOUT 1-2 MPH INSTEAD OF THE 40MPH ON THE ROAD. TRUCK WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT THE BOTTOM BALL JOINT HAD BROKEN OFF. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. PEOPLES LIVES ARE AT STAKE HERE. I AM THE ONLY OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE ALL THE REPAIR/ MAINTENANCE RECORDS. THE REPAIR FOR THIS IS OVER $3000.00. VIOLENT FRONT WHEEL SIDE TO SIDE SHAKING WHEN HITTING A SMALL BUMP ON THE FREEWAY, GOING STRAIT. BRAKING HARD TO A SLOWER SPEED, BELOW 50 MPH STOPS THE SHAKE. RAM DEALER INSTALLED A STEERING ARM FACTORY UPDATE. THIS DID NOT CURE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER COULD NOT TELL ME HOW THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM IS KNOWN AS THE DEATH WOBBLE.

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE TRUCK WILL INTERMITTENTLY JERK VIOLENTLY UNTIL SPEED IS REDUCED. THIS IS SO COMMON THE INTERNET IS REFERRED TO IT AS THE "DEATH WOBBLE". IT CAN DO IT MULTIPLE TIMES IN ONE TRIP AND THEN NOT AGAIN FOR SERVERAL OTHERS. THANKFULLY I WAS DRIVING AND NOT MY WIFE. THE VIBRATION IS SO VIOLENT NOT MANY COULD CONTROL IT SAFELY.

WHILE DRIVING AT ABOUT 55 MPH, I HIT A MINOR BUMP IN THE FREEWAY AND THE TRUCK STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY,STEERING WHEEL SHAKING SIDE TO SIDE. THE ONLY WAY IT STOPPED WAS I HAD TO REDUCE MY SPEED TO COMPLETE STOP , THE PROBLEM WAS I WAS TOWING A 16' TRAILER WITH A 4000 LB LOAD ON IT, I WAS IN FRONT OF A SEMI TRUCK WITH A FULL LOAD, IT WAS A VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS SITUATION. . COMBINATION OF TIRE PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT, ALIGNMENT, TOE ANGLE? LIMITED MYSELF TO DRIVING LESS THAN 55 MPH. PROBLEM HAPPENS WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP JUST RIGHT AND IT SENDS ONE WHEEL UP, AND THE OTHER DOWN. THAT WHEEL THEN GETS BOUNCED UP, AND SENDS THE OTHER DOWN. IT'S LIKE DRIBBLING TWO BASKETBALLS, AND THE WHOLE FRONT END SHAKES VIOLENTLY. SINCE THIS HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT HAPPENS ON THE HIGHWAY, AND THE TRUCK IS COMPLETELY UNCONTROLLABLE DURING THIS TIME. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE IT STOP IS TO SLOW DOWN (REMEMBER, YOU'RE ON THE HIGHWAY) TO 40-30 MPH. LAST TIME I CAME BACK FROM QUEENS, IT HAPPENED SEVEN TIMES. IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN TODAY, 8/14/15. THE 'BUMP' ASSOCIATED WITH AN OVERPASS EXPANSION JOINT ON HIGHWAY I-515 INDUCED 'DEATH WOBBLE' INTO THE TRUCK CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL. THE LOSS OF CONTROL ALMOST CAUSED AN IMPACT WITH OTHER VEHICLES THAT WERE CLOSE. THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURE WILL ASSIST IN CORRECTING THE ISSUE. THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER SAYS THAT INSTALL THE 'UPGRADED' LINKAGE PACKAGE CURES THIS MOST OF THE TIME (FOR $1,600.00). THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNOW SAFETY ISSUE THAT NHTSA AND DODGE ARE DUCKING. LET ME START BY STATING THAT I'VE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 33 YEARS AND HAVE AN IMPECCABLE DRIVING RECORD. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROX. 65 MPH. I WAS CHANGING LANES WHEN I HIT A FEW SMALL BUMPS IN THE ROAD. MY TRUCK IMMEDIATELY STARTED SHAKING VIOLENTLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY. I PULLED TO BREAKDOWN LANE WHILE SLOWING THE VEHICLE. THE TRUCK DIDN'T STOP SHAKING UNTIL APPROX. 30 MPH, THOUGH IT WAS STILL SHAKING, I HAD NEVER ENCOUNTERED SUCH A LOSS OF CONTROL BEFORE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I DECIDED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE ON THE WEB. I WAS AMAZED AT WHAT I FOUND. THIS PHENOMENON IS DUBBED 'DEATH WOBBLE'. THOUGH IT SEEMS THIS IN NOT AN UNCOMMON EVENT, NO-ONE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO PINPOINT THE PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE VIOLENT SHAKING. THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERING OPINIONS. MY MECHANIC CHECKED OUT TRUCK AND I WAS TOLD THAT OTHER THAN VERY SLIGHT WEAR IN DRIVERS SIDE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS, EVERYTHING WAS TIGHT. I'VE SINCE REPLACED UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS EVEN THOUGH MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THEY WEREN'T BAD ENOUGH TO WARRANT REPLACEMENT. I'VE ALSO REPLACED SHIMMY SHOCK ON STABILIZER AND INSTALLED AFTERMARKET STABILIZER AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM EVEN MORE. WE ALSO REALIZED PREVIOUS OWNER HAD NUMEROUS NEW PARTS INSTALLED TOO. A FEW MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING OUR DODGE RAM 2500, WE EXPERIENCED OUR FIRST "DEATH WOBBLE" INCIDENT ON INTERSTATE 70 AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, AND OCCURRED 2 MORE TIMES THAT SAME TRIP. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED AND BROUGHT TO AN AUTOMOTIVE SHOP. THE AUTOMOTIVE SHOP SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE TRUCK BUT SUGGESTED REPLACING THE STEERING STABILIZER. I HAD THE STABILIZER REPLACED AND IT SEEMED OKAY FOR ABOUT 3 DAYS. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT THE "DEATH WOBBLE" OCCURRED ON A REGULAR BASIS, ANY SMALL BUMP OR TRANSITION IN THE ROADWAY WOULD CAUSE THE FRONT AXLE, TIRES AND STEERING TO SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY IT FELT LIKE A LARGE EARTHQUAKE IN THE TRUCK. THE DEATH WOBBLE WILL NOT STOP TILL THE TRUCK WAS SLOWED DOWN TO A COMPLETE STOP. THIS SEEMED TO OCCUR MOSTLY AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 45-70 MPH. WE STOPPED TAKING THE TRUCK ON MAJOR ROADWAYS AS IT WOULD BE LIKELY TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE TRUCK WAS BROUGHT TO SEVERAL AUTOMOTIVE SHOPS INCLUDING DODGE AND CHRYSLER DEALERSHIPS. ALL OF THE AUTOMOTIVE SHOPS SAID THAT THIS IS FAIRLY COMMON AMONG THESE TRUCKS AS DODGE DEALERSHIPS TOLD ME THAT BASICALLY I WAS A LIAR AND DENIED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM. AFTER DOING THOROUGH RESEARCH I DECIDED TO FOLLOW THE ADVICE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE SHOPS AND SEVERAL SPECIALTY 4X4 SHOPS. EVERY STEERING AND SUSPENSION COMPONENT WAS REPLACED INCLUDING EVERY BUSHING, BEARING AND GREASE FITTING SOME PARTS WERE THE UPGRADED MOPAR LINKAGES AND PITTMAN ARM AND THE REST OF THE PARTS WERE OE REPLACEMENTS FROM REPUTABLE HIGH END MANUFACTURERS. I ALSO HAD AN ALIGNMENT PERFORMED IMMEDIATELY I HAVE SAVED EVERY PART THAT I HAVE TAKEN OFF THE TRUCK SINCE I BEGAN THIS JOURNEY INCLUDING RECEIPTS FOR ALL THE WORK/PARTS THAT WAS PERFORMED/INSTALLED. TODAY WHEN I WAS ENTERING THE EXPRESSWAY, WHICH HAS FRESH PATCHES OF CONCRETE, NO POTHOLE OR ROUGH SURFACE, MY TRUCK STARTING SHAKING THE FRONT TIRES AND STEERING WHEEL VIOLENTLY (DEATH WOBBLE). I EXPERIENCED WHAT DODGE OWNERS ARE CALLING THE "DEATH WOBBLE" TODAY 24 NOV 2009 AFTER I HAD THE FRONT U-JOINTS REPLACED ON BOTH FRONT WHEELS AND THE U-JOINTS REPLACED ON THE REAR DRIVE SHAFT. I CONTACTED DAVIS MOORE IN WICHITA KS AND THEY SEEM UNCONCERNED ABOUT THE PROBLEM. I WAS DOING 60 MPH ON SOMEWHAT SMOOTH ROAD. I RAN OVER A SEAM THAT WHERE THE CONCRETE MEETS AND THAT'S WHEN I GOT THE WOBBLE THAT NEARLY DROVE ME INTO THE GUARD RAIL. I HAD EXPERIENCED IT BACK IN JULY 09 IN A TURN GOING OVER A BRIDGE. I DROVE OVER A SLIGHT BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THAT'S WHAT STARTED IT. MY WIFE INFORMED ME THAT SHE EXPERIENCED IT BACK IN APRIL 09 SAME THING DROVE OVER A BUMP AND THE WOBBLE STARTED. THE WOBBLE TODAY HAS CAUSED THE STEERING DAMPENER TO START LEAKING. AT A COST OF $149.00 + TAX I WILL REPLACE IT TONIGHT. ON ALL 3 OF THESE OCCASIONS WE HAVE BEEN LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE IN A 1-LANE ROAD EITHER EXITING OR ENTERING A CURVE AND DRIVING OVER NORMAL BUMPS IN THE ROAD. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS FORUMS AND BLOGS REPORTING THIS SAME PROBLEM AMONG VARIOUS OWNERS WITH DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT SPECS. THE ONE THING WE ALL SEEM TO HAVE IN COMMON IS THIS PROBLEM CALLED DEATH WOBBLE. WHILE DRIVING MY TRUCK AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IF I HIT A BUMP AT AN ANGLE, THE FRONT END WOULD START TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY. SO VIOLENTLY THAT I HAVE TO LET MY FOOT OF THE GAS AND COAST TO A SPEED THAT PUTS MY LIFE IN DANGER BECAUSE I CAN NOT SAFELY OR RELIABLY STEER THE TRUCK OFF THE ROAD. IT TAKES EVERYTHING I'VE GOT TO KEEP THE TRUCK IN THE LANE I AM TRAVELING IN. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND, EACH TIME, I TRY TO GET IT FIXED OR HAVE A MECHANIC LOOK INTO WHAT IS CAUSING THE VIOLENT SHAKING. MOST OF THE TIME, THE MECHANIC (ABOUT 5 DIFFERENT SERVICE STATIONS) CAN'T DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I ASKED A SENIOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT WITH CHRYSLER WHAT THEY COULD DO. SHE SAID THAT GOODWILL ASSISTANCE WAS DECLINED. I ASKED HER WHAT SHE MEANT BY THAT, SHE SAID THAT I DON'T HAVE A WARRANTY, MY TRUCK IS 6 YEARS OLD, I HAVE 80K MILEAGE, AND CHRYSLER WILL NOT HELP. I WASN'T THE ONE WHO HAS DECLINED THIS PROVERBIAL GOODWILL ASSISTANCE NOR WAS IT IN MY POWER. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY SHE WOULD BRING IT UP. WHILE UTILIZING THE DRIVER'S SIDE TURN SIGNAL, THE PASSENGER SIDE TURN SIGNAL WOULD ILLUMINATE INSTEAD. THIS FAILURE WAS ALSO REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT WAS EXPERIENCING VERY HARD VIBRATIONS FORM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. HE STRUCK A SQUIRREL IN THE ROAD AND NEARLY LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE VIBRATIONS. A LOCAL SERVICE DEALER REPLACED THE STEERING LINKAGES IN THE VEHICLE AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. HE LATER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE SUSPENSION AND EXCESSIVE VIBRATIONS (STEERING LINKAGES). THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 120,000.

THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR TRUCK RELATING TO FAULTY FRONT SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SO CALLED, "DEATH WOBBLE" AT LEAST 30 OR MORE TIME ON FREEWAYS ALL OVER THE STATE. PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN TRAVELING 65 MPH +/- 2 AND DRIVING OVER UNEVEN SURFACES. CAUSES TRUCK TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND VEER TO THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT. ONLY WAY TO STOP IS TO LET OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND LET COAST TO 25 TO 30 MPH WHICH IS REAL SAFE ON THE FREEWAY. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED OR CAUSED FAILURE OF TRACK BAR, WHICH IS ALSO LISTED IN YOUR COMPLAINT SECTION MULTIPLE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER BLEW OFF MY CLAIM AND TOLD ME THE VEHICLE WAS ROAD WORTHY. THEY REFERRED ME TO THIS SITE SO I COULD READ THE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS I GUESS? THIS PROBLEM STARTED AROUND 45,000 MILES AND CONTINUOUSLY GETS WORSE. NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT SOME DAMAGE WAS EVIDENT ON FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALER. THE DEALER NOTICED THE STABILIZER BAR BROKE. WE NEARLY RAN OFF THE ROAD AND JUST MISSED THE SEMI NEXT TO US. IT WAS SO BAD, MY WIFE'S HEAD WAS HITTING AGAINST THE PASSENGER WINDOW. REPLACED THAT,, AND SENT US ON OUR WAY. WE AGAIN BEGAN DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY, PULLING A SMALL CARGO TRAILER WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS SO MUCH WORSE WHILE I TRIED TO HANG ON TO THE WHEEL THAT I COULD HARDLY FOCUS MY EYES AND AGAIN MY WIFE'S HEAD SMASHING AGAINST THE PASSENGER WINDOW WITH THIS VIOLENT SHAKING. WE TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DODGE DEALERSHIP IN ST. GEORGE, UT WHERE THEY REPORTED THERE WERE SEVERAL THINGS THEY COULD DO, BUT COULDN'T GUARANTY THAT IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. DID COMMENT THAT THEY WERE WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS AND THE SERVICE TEAM IN SLC, UT HAD NAMED IT "THE DEATH WOBBLE". I QUESTIONED WHY THERE IS NOT A RECALL IF IT IS SO COMMON, BUT HE HAD NO ANSWER. HE STATED MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAD THIS PROBLEM 'JUST GOT RID OF THE TRUCK' IN OTHER WORDS SOME OTHER FOOL HAS IT. MY 2003 DODGE RAM 2500 STEERING SHAKES UNCONTROLLABLY WHEN YOU HIT A BUMP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR A BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINT. DIRECTIONAL CONTROL IS DIFFICULT WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING. THIS HAPPENED WHILE TRAVELING AT 75 MPH, AND SENT THE TRUCK INTO THE OTHER LANE, NEARLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. COULD NOT GET THE SHAKING TO STOP UNTIL TRUCK DROPPED TO 45 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT ONE OTHER CUSTOMER IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THEY CHECKED ALL THE STEERING COMPONENTS AND SAID EVERYTHING WAS GOOD. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS, AND SHOULD BE CHECKED OUT FURTHER. BALL JOINTS IN THESE TRUCKS:2003 RAM 2500 -3500 ARE PROVEN TO BE DEFECTIVE.
