The contact owned a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that cylinder #3 needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred approximately two weeks later. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that all three cylinders needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred approximately a week later. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the residence. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics, where it was diagnosed that an unknown hose had leaked fluid into the engine, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer, where the same assessment was made. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 58,000.

Complaint Description: My 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost is experiencing a catastrophic engine failure due to "coolant intrusion" into the engine cylinders, a known manufacturing defect associated with the open-deck engine block design in this model year (referenced in Ford TSB 19-2346). The Failure: While driving at highway speeds (65+ MPH) on California freeways, the vehicle intermittently and suddenly enters "limp mode," drastically reducing power and acceleration without warning. This makes it impossible to merge safely or keep up with traffic, creating a life-threatening safety hazard for myself and other motorists. History & Diagnosis: The issue began in early 2025 with a Check Engine Light, which was initially misdiagnosed by a mechanic as a non-critical boost leak. The condition worsened significantly in Q4 2025, leading to dangerous stalls in power. A new independent inspection confirmed the root cause is not a boost leak, but internal coolant leakage into the engine block cylinders. This defect has caused permanent engine damage requiring a full engine replacement. The failure mode is identical to thousands of other complaints regarding the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, yet no safety recall exists to address the sudden loss of motive power.

My 2016 Ford with only 56,210 miles has developed a critical engine failure. The engine block due to a manufactuing design flaw has caused the coolant to leak into one of the cylinders. Dealership informed me I need a new motor at the cost of $7300.00. Ford will not stand behind the repair due to the age of my vehicle. It's in excellent condition other than the defective engine block.

I’ve had my car nine years. No problems with the body there’s no rust on it at all, and I love my ford. Just as I hit 100,000 miles the warning light came on the car. Come to find out it is a head gasket leak and is required to have a whole new engine. Yes the warranty is over as the car has been paid for and the warranty is expired. My complaint is that Ford knows this is an issue which I know for a fact that they know this. I cannot afford $7100 for a new engine when I just want to keep my car. I can’t even afford another car not even a beater for $1000. I’m complaining that ford knows this is a known issue, but because I am out of warranty, they will not help me. I’ve had ford’s most of my life and never had an issue like this. Very disappointing that a big company like this has a known issue but will not help repair it.

My 2016 Ford Edge has 95,000 miles on it and I have only owned it since Spring of this year. Out of nowhere, I start having an antifreeze leak, and notice it is coming from my water pump, and my mechanic says it is going to cost $2000 plus dollars to fix it. I called several other repair places and they won’t even do the repair because it’s such a big/expensive job. I have researched about the class action lawsuit about this particular problem in my exact model with the 3.5L motor. If my Dad had not of noticed the leak, it would have completely ruined my motor driving it around much longer. I am struggling financially after having serious health problems this summer, and I simply can’t afford to pay for this repair. I can’t even get approved for any more loans or credit cards, because I am in so much debt. I want to know what can be done about this, as this is way too much financial stress for me to have to deal with. At the very least, Ford should compensate me and take care of the repair costs.

This is a follow-up to my previous NHTSA complaint (11689215.)regarding the flexplate failure on my 2016 Ford Edge (VIN: [XXX] ). This is a follow-up to my previous NHTSA complaint regarding the flexplate failure on my 2016 Ford Edge (VIN [XXX] ). Ford opened case XXX but closed it without any resolution, even though my vehicle remains undrivable. A new case CXH-XXX 1 was later created under Customer Satisfaction Program 22N12 for the same defect. My car is still at AutoNation Ford Bellevue (WA); the dealer confirms no repair authorization or contact from Ford Corporate. This defect causes a rattling noise, flexplate cracking, and sudden loss of power while driving—a clear safety hazard. Ford continues to deny repair based on mileage limits in the CSP, although this is a known safety-related defect. I am requesting NHTSA to review Ford’s handling of CSP 22N12 and require Ford to treat this as a full safety recall without mileage restrictions. Engine coolant issue, known problem for this model year of ford edge. Total engine failure at less than 60k miles. Engine light would come on and go off. Mild hesitation at start up. Went to leave one day and found vehicle would no longer start. Towed away and diagnosed with complete engine failure and coolant intrusion. Called Ford and was informed that while there was a service bulletin that directly acknowledged that these faulty engines are UNSAFE AS IS, they are not issuing any assistance to anyone who has an affected engine. This engine failure occurred apprx one week after visiting a Ford Dealership where they did routine recall work. We asked about our check engine light and because the light was not on while at ford they could not complete a check of the engine. During the other routine checks they did, they also claimed to have inspected the battery which at the time had terminal covers that were visibly overflowing with corrosion! We were not informed of this issue either. Cost to repair is about 10-14k, the value of the vehicle.

The coolant is leaking into the engine area. Causing repeated coil failures and misfire and i assume damage to engine. I believe engine block needs to repaired or replaced. Also, during both dry and especially slippery/wet conditions... my vehicle is veering to both sides on its own while driving .my hands are on wheel going straight and it just drifts, slips and slides. Afraid I'm going to crash. No warning lights. Might be esc and or abs systems. It seems these are known issues for this year make and model but these recalls and warnings for some reason are not attached to my VIN. I need them attached to my VIN so that I can take to Ford dealership for repair before these system failures kill me.

Coolant leaks into engine. Also leaks into spark plugs causing spark plug misfire. Engine block cracked. Only at 66k miles

Sep 10, 2025

Check engine light came on. A friend of mine said she saw smoke from my rear exhaust. Ran codes came back as a misfire. Spark plugs; the cold idle had become a little rough. I was driving home from work 2 1/2 weeks ago and had to stop because a warning came across my screen about hot coolant or engine in red with exclamation marks. My daughters boyfriend came out where I stopped and changed my thermostat because one of the hoses was hot and one not showing it was stuck closed. I asked him to do my spark plugs at a later date. I took the car to Byerly Ford for a coolant flush because I realized I should have used the same coolant. I asked for spark plugs. They couldn't fit it in that day because I scheduled online. He asked if I could leave it overnight. I couldn't. I was then told it may be this bigger known problem if residue under spark plugs come back. He also asked if I had been topping fluid. I told him no. Last Friday night the bf changed my plugs. Residue under # 3. He asked why my coolant looked brown. He opened the cap and saw the coolant was low but good color and the container was stained. I bought the correct coolant. I called Monday morning to see if I could get it in that day. I was sent to voicemail of who is in charge of Engine work.I left a brief message as was requested. I haven't received a call back. Tuesday night (last night) after opening the cap to checking my coolant level and the level rose a bit; my car wouldn't start. I came across TSB#22-2229 which states safety concerns. This includes my cars year, make, model and engine type. I read of a class action lawsuit and recall, but when I look up my vehicles recalls this problem is not listed. I will be calling Byerly shortly to discuss me having my car towed up there for definitive diagnosis. My 2016 Edge has 90016.5 miles. I got new brake pads very recently as well as my the works oil change (no issues)and tires are newish.I have cared for this car with the expectation of twice the milage.

Sep 2, 2025

I was having issues with my car starting. Once I got it started a large cloud of white smoke rolled out of the exhaust. As I drove it the overheat warning came on. I took it in to a shop. I was advised that a coolant intrusion into the engine cylinders, particularly with EcoBoost engines. This issue stems from a design flaw in the open deck engine block, which can lead to misfires, white smoke, and ultimately engine failure1. Ford issued TSB 22-2229 addressing this issue, My car has 116,102 miles on it. Upon doing some research, there have been thousands of the same model of engines that have been reported as having this issue, yet Ford has not recalled the engine. I am now have to shell out over $10,000 to fix an engine that Ford is aware is defective yet not doing anything about it.

Aug 20, 2025

The engine needs to be replaced due to coolant intrusion. This issue had no initial warning, and the car suddenly had issues accelerating and when I looked under the hood at home was low on coolant. I refilled it. Next morning an engine light came on for misfire in cylinder #3. I had an engine coil and the spark plugs replaced and it seemed fine for about a week before everything resumed happening again. Was then told the head gasket. My mechanic said to take it to ford for coolant intrusion & that this was a known issue with their engines. I feel this should be a recall, this is not safe. Ford has today confirmed I need a new long block due to coolant intrusion. Not only is this issue unsafe, but it’s very costly to fix. I’ve already spent $400 on this, and now I’m going to have to spend several thousand on a new engine for a car I’ve only owned for 20k miles.

Aug 3, 2025

Check engine light revealed code P0302. This is due to coolant intrusion into cylinder 2 (confirmed by Ford dealership) due to faulty open deck coolant design by Ford. TSB 22-2229 was issued by Ford on 09 June 2022 concerning ecoboost engines exhibiting codes, similar to mine, as a coolant intrusion. The only fix is a long block replacement. My dealership service department diagnosed ($170) and requested financial assistance on my behalf to Ford, but was rejected in totality. This is a Ford design flaw that causes this coolant leak and the only fix is a complete engine replacement. If the engine fails before the manufacturer warranty of 5/60k, then Ford will pick up the tab. If the vehicle is bought used (in my case), and goes past 60k miles, then Ford will recuse themselves from any liability.

Jul 31, 2025

I bought my 2016 Ford Edge on May 30, 2025. Six weeks later it started with engine light coming on with code P0304, misfire in cylinder 4. Than white smoke from exhaust only at first morning startup. Took to Ford Dealership Mechanic only to be told I needed a new long block in engine due to coolant leak. Price $9000

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while his wife was driving 35 MPH, the check engine warning light was illuminated. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the coolant reservoir was empty. The vehicle was taken to dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered to provide a refund after the contact had paid for the repair. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 90,000.

Coolant is being leaked into the #2 cylinder causing the car to misfire. Coolant isn't a lubricant and it causes wear in the cylinder. Also causes a misfire like water in your gas. I have a car that 98% of that this type of car works correctly but the broken 2% will cost $8000 due to the block needing replaced. Ford knows that this is an issue that goes back 5 or 6 years, but yet has not made a recall nor gives any program to be fixed.

Jul 24, 2025

My coolant was leaking into one of the cylinders, which causes engine failure. I had to replace my long block. My car had lost power, I couldn’t make it up hills. My engine could have started on fire as well.

Jul 18, 2025

The engine block is leaking coolant into piston cylinder #4. This caused misfires resulting in reduced power when needed causing a few close call accidents. The loss of coolant could have also cause the engine to overheat and catch fire due to the loss of coolant. Yes, the check engine light came on in early March 2025 so I took it to Advanced auto and O'Reilly's for for diagnoses at first, both advised to replace spark plugs and wires. Since plugs and wires were new, I took my 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L ecoboost to my local dealership. Yes, the local ford dealership diagnosed the problem as coolant leaking into cylinder #4 with the fix as being an engine replacement.

While driving through a small town +-500 miles from my home the 2016 Edge lost power with no warning. I barely got to a gas station for help. No fluid leaks, no smoke, no check engine light prior to fail. Was running great until it didn’t run anymore. Police checked on me and noted my back end was sticking out into the street a bit, couldn’t move it. Had it towed, got a hotel room due to how far away from home this happened. All local mechanics were booked 2+ weeks out but this one ran diagnostics sooner and suggested engine replacement. Had it towed to closest Ford dealer for 2nd opinion. They suggested same. I had serious (couldn’t start completely dead several times, no prior warnings) and not so serious (radio, seat, door) electrical problems earlier in ownership where Ford engineer came across state to recalibrate. I don’t have documentation on this but I think it took him like 4 hours at Ford Seelye Kalamazoo but it should be in vehicle history. With these two MAJOR exceptions (and no warnings) my Edge ran great. I feel we took great care of it, has zero rust, just over 81k miles and bought it new just over 8 years ago (as of this writing). Just replaced tires, rims, brakes within this year. Filled my gas tank full just before fail. We were told it would cost $2400 to tow it back home. Called Ford road assist for suggestions and relief and they stated that since it’s over 8 years and 80,000 miles they offer nothing. Bought it new on 6/30/17 and engine failed on 6/18/25 (just under 2 weeks of 8 years) and 1,336 miles over of any responsibility on Ford Motor Company. There should be a Ford customer service case number.

ALL Ford Edge vehicles that have the 2.0L engine where the probability of coolant leaking into the cylinders destroying engine and transmission because of the block design should be recalled. Every day I stress over when mine will suddenly leave me stranded or cause an accident or leave me with a major repair bill regardless of how well I do maintenance! My car jerks between 2nd and 3rd or between 20 to 30 mph, and then smooths out which is making me fear that the torque converter is going out! I’m not the ONLY one living in fear of being a victim of Ford’s bad block design that is costing consumers thousands of dollars to repair or replace!

My car was having issues and still is having issues starting after refueling. After putting fuel in the vehicle my car stalls out. I restart the car I have to give it gas before hurrying up and putting it in drive just to keep the car on. Due to a potential internal leak in the canister purge valve this can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel tank and can potentially lead to a crack in the tank, which can lead to a fuel leak and or fire. The check engine light came on reading one code. And because I'm unable to afford to have it repaired because of how expensive it is, I now have three codes coming off the check engine light. I smell fuel when I turn my car off or I'm running I'm running low on gas. My VSA light has also been on during all of this as well. I would gladly bring the vehicle to anyone to get it completely diagnosed by any professional of your choice.

The vehicle started shaking and vibrating violently at 70mph on the highway followed by a loud pop. At this time a warning light appeared on the dash. I could barely control the vehicle during this incident and could have lost control at high speed. This endangered the occupants of my car as well as everyone else on the road. I had just taken the vehicle in for service several weeks prior and was told it was in great working condition. I was able to drive the vehicle to a certified Ford dealership who diagnosed the issue as a common problem within this particular Ford engine. He showed me the Technical Service Bulletin (19-2243) that Ford released internally showing they were aware of the problem but never recalled the affected vehicles. The dealership confirmed that the only fix is replacing all cylinder heads or the entire engine.

My cars check engine light came on, went to autozone and they diagnosed it as a coil 3 needed to be replaced, ordered the coil and replaced, but light was still illuminated, got the same part and replaced it again, however check engine light remained on, took car to dealership where we were told I needed a new engine due to coolant leak and sludge build up, did not have the money to replace. This happened at approximately 126,000 miles

May 30, 2025

While driving, the engine was shaking the car very badly to the point where it was unsafe to drive—the engine light also started flashing. We had it towed to a shop and they discovered a crack in the engine causing coolant to leak into one of the cylinders, causing misfire. Even after refilling the coolant, the engine had this issue. They deemed it an internal engine issue requiring complete replacement.

What happened with your engine? My engine malfunctioned unexpectedly at just 79,000 miles, despite no history of major engine problems. The final diagnosis showed a blown head gasket. Were there any warning signs beforehand? Yes—about two to three weeks before the malfunction, I received multiple cylinder misfire codes and a low coolant warning. I had both issues checked out and believed they were resolved at the time, as the car was running fine afterward. Did the car stop running completely? Yes. After everything seemed okay for a bit, the car suddenly wouldn’t start. We ruled out the battery, as it had already been tested and was functioning correctly. Were there other warning lights or concerns? Yes. Right before a planned trip, my tire pressure light came on. I had it checked and everything looked fine. After about 10 miles, the light turned off, but it began flashing again intermittently, along with the engine light, even after restarting the car multiple times. What was the final outcome? After further inspection, it was confirmed that the root issue was a blown head gasket, which led to the engine failure.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the issue of coolant intrusion in my Ford vehicle. Despite maintaining the car regularly and following the manufacturer’s guidelines, I have experienced repeated problems with coolant entering areas where it shouldn’t, which has caused significant engine performance issues and potential long-term damage. As a Ford customer, I expected a higher standard of quality and reliability, especially regarding critical components like the cooling system. I am disappointed that this issue has not been addressed proactively by Ford, and I urge the company to investigate this matter further and offer a resolution to prevent future occurrences for other affected customers.

Tony Betten & Sons Ford, Grand Rapids, MI, replaced a leaking plastic oil pan 03.14.2025, at mileage 61,182. There were no warning lamps or messages and no incidence of damage. We noted continuous oil spots on the garage floor, even after a 01.13.2025 oil and filter change. We were concerned that this oil leakage would compromise engine lubrication, possibly leading to engine failure. We have purchased 3 Edges, the first a 2008 model went over 200,000 miles without oil leakage. We currently own a 2022 Ford Edge ST. It is surprising for an oil pan to spontaneously leak at 60,000 mileage. After our excellent 200,000+ mileage experience with the 2008, we expected similarly spectacular operation from the 2016.

I purchased a 2016 Ford Edge and it has been one problem after another. This particular problem, and the last straw, has to do with coolant leaking from my car. After reading several complaints over a period of years it seems to be the same issue with many owners of the same make and model, a crack in the cylinder or motor (Long Block). I also read that Ford is aware of this problem and nothing has been done towards resolving the situation. This cannot be an ongoing issue. What will it take before a recall is made? After paying for several repairs since purchasing the car, I have exhausted all of my resources and can not afford an engine replacement. Will someone please, please, please, hear our complaints and offer a resolution that will not cost us an arm and a leg as a result of the manufacturer's negligence. I am very disappointed in FORD.

Coolant was leaking into cylinder #1 in the engine. The engine consequently had to be replaced, and a Ford dealer replaced it. Coolant was leaking into the engine because of a design defect in the engine that Ford has known about for a long time. See Ford Technical Service Bulletin 22-2229. The design defect is a safety risk. My vehicle would not pass Pennsylvania’s vehicle safety inspection required annually by Pennsylvania law because of the coolant leaking into the cylinder in the engine due to the design defect. Information about Pennsylvania’s vehicle safety inspections required by Pennsylvania law is at [XXX] . “Pennsylvania requires vehicle safety inspections to ensure that vehicles are maintained for safe operation. Safety Inspections can prevent vehicle failure on the highways and crashes that may result in injuries or death.” Id. Coolant leaking into an engine cylinder(s) could result in engines overheating due to low or no coolant, thereby endangering the safety of passengers, other drivers, and others. Vehicle fires because of engine overheating while the vehicle is parked in a home garage could result in a house fire, thereby endangering the safety and lives of persons in the house and neighbors. Additionally, coolant leaking into an engine cylinder(s) results in excessive smoke/emissions when the vehicle is started, thereby negatively affecting air quality and the safety and health of everyone who breathes the contaminated air. The clouds of smoke produced by coolant burning off when the vehicles are started in a driveway or parking lot could obscure the vision of other drivers or pedestrians or distract them, thereby endangering their safety, the safety of the vehicle occupants, and the safety of others. Ford paid about 20% of the engine replacement cost, and I had to pay the rest, which was $7,037.08 including $400.02 PA sales tax. Started hearing like a water sloshing noise when stopping or accelerating. I took it to the shop and coolant was low no apparent leak of any kind. They put coolant in and within a few weeks I started hearing the water noise again added coolant again and check engine light came on. Code read misfire on cylinder 1. Check engine light would pop on and then go off. Started rough cranking took it to the shop and need a new engine. 57,000 miles on this car. Car had been serviced at or around every 3,000-3,500 miles. Started doing research and this particular engine has been recalled but not in the make and year of my car. I really feel I should not have to pay nearly 6,000 for my engine to be repaired when so many issues with this particular engine I called Ford Service to make appt for recalls and told the Service Dept my issues and she off the start stated I needed a new motor without even seeing the car. How did she already know this? Because the motors have been having issues so this wasn’t the first time they have dealt with this particular engine

The engine lost power, ran rough and smoked really bad while driving in trafic causing me to pull over on a busy highway. The vehicle was diagnosed with a coolant leak into cylinder 3 which is a known problem with the Ecoboost 2.0 engines from 2015 to 2018. The vehicle only has 66,800 miles. Ford has a TSB that suggests replacing the engine if it has that problem but refuses to pay for it.

car has 63000 miles and engine needs replaced because there is antifreeze getting into cylinders. had checked at a service station. safety concern is gasket may fail allowing antifreeze to shoot onto block causing fire. there's a recall for the 2.0 ecoboost from 2015 to 2018 for this same problem but vehicle isn't under a recall. also engine light has come on 2 times. if reset the computer light turns off for a little while then comes back on. this started 3 weeks ago. also vehicle runs rough at cold start up and blows out white smoke.

The 2016 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost has sadly caused us countless issues and extensive $ to repair. The latest issue is the 2020 investigation that revealed a design defect of the engine block and cylinder head, and coolant has been leaking and burning in the engine cylinder, which has lead to me needing a new engine. Unfortunately, the suit displays documented proof Ford knew about it and didn’t disclose it to buyers. This has lead to vast overheating, risking the vehicle catching on fire while in use, burning empty coolant, and a potential for having a blown engine on the highway. We took the car to a trusted shop when the overheating issue occurred and this was our circumstance.

We are Canadians live in Calgary, AB Canada. We have a 2016 ford egde. There was an engine warning sign popped up when we had a road trip in US days ago. We also noticed that the car chokes when cold start with white sweet smoke come out. We had the car checked up by a ford dealer at coos bay, Oregon. Here is the diagnostics - dtcp0303 stored related to cylinder 3 misfire - found engine coolant level low - topped off coolant and pressure tested system - found pressure to bleed off abnormally - no external leaks observed - removed aprk plug and bore scope cylinder - verified coolant intrusion in cylinder 3 also found signs of burning coolant on spark plug - recommended repair is long block replacement. We cancelled our unfinished trip and struggled to drive 2000km back home(low speed, keep checking/adding coolant and engine oil). The local ford dealer quoted me 10k CAD to replace the long block. Our car is not even 8 years old at 130K kms. I called Ford Canada and was told they are sorry but the car is out of warranty and no recalls. Although there is a TSB#22-2229 which proves this is a known issue to Ford. I spent some time search on line found many ford owners had same experience and referred by them to post a complain here.

Coolant is leaking into the engine. My car unexpectedly and very suddenly started overheating while driving, without any warning that coolant levels were low. The car was inspected by the dealer's service center, and they confirmed this issue, stating the only solution is to completely replace the engine. The check engine light on the car did come on, but the code was related to an engine misfire. I had spark plugs and an engine coil replaced, but after a few days, the check engine light came back on with the same code of an engine misfire. One day while driving, the temperature gauge warning came on, saying that the temperature of the car was too high and to stop driving immediately. At this point, I checked under the hood and saw that the coolant overflow tank was completely empty.

My Ford Edge was running rough and white smoke was coming out of the exhaust. Tge engine light came on my dashboard. I took it to MasterTech in Dimondale MI on July 5, 2024 and they said coolant is leaking into the 4th cylinder. He said Ford recommends an engine replacement for the issue. He said Ford knows about this issue with the ecoboost engine. I have 88,000 miles on my car and shouldn't need a new engine. I have not taken it to the dealership because they charge to look at the car. They said they know about the issue but there is not a recall and it would cost $9,000 to fix. I have been informed that it is possible that the car will catch on fire.

When starting white smoke appeared for about 5 minutes. Check engine light came on 2 weeks ago after getting my oil changed. Car felt like it had lost its power and/or pep when accelerating. Found P0301 & P0316 engine misfires. TSB 22-2229 applies to concern. Performed coolant pressure test for 2 hours, removed cylinders 1 & 2 plugs inspected with bore scope and found coolant present in cylinder1, indicating coolant intrusion. Recommend replacement of engine long block as per TSB 22-2229 and retest. Also, bushing shifter cable recall was completed as well. Went to Bruce Titus Ford, Inc. Port Orchard, WA today [XXX] . My Edge has 41,000 miles on it and the engine light came on. I took it to my local dealership and they found that it has coolent intrusion and therefore I need a new engine. The dealership told me there is a TSB# 22-2133 (2.0L EcoBooser - Coolant in Cylinders) for this issue but Ford never issued a recall. I did my own research to find out that there is a class action lawsuit in the Eastern District Court for this exact issue. I contacted Ford Corporate and they said they know nothing about this issue but would help expedite the repairs of my vehicle. The TSB I looked up is directly from Ford so I am a little preterbed they aren't taking responsibility for this. Engines and rental cars are not cheap.

Faulty engine design leads to head gasket failure, engine misfire and stall. Engine stall can cause loss of vehicle motive and braking by loss of vacuum assisted braking. Dealer just completed service on this vehicle and reported the failure after completing repair on another defective part, the flexplate assembly. After completing repairs advised it likely has coolant intrusion issue. Did not inform customer about the TSB showing FORD determined the block is defective and should be replaced at customer cost. Ford has known about this issue since about 2011. These engines need to be recalled. Repair data available to mechanics and on popular video sites show that Fords updated block removes two water paths that interfere with head gasket seating on 2015 - 2019 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost engines. This is a known manufacturer defect that puts owners and occupants in uneeded danger due to Ford's refusal to recall and rectify these engines. There are multiple reports of these engines failing for this issue with as few as 30,000 miles. This engine is also installed in multiple other Ford and Lincoln vehicles including focus, fusion, taurus, Escape, edge, mkz, mkc, and nautilus.

I'm filing a complaint regarding my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine, which required two engine replacements due to a defect causing coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The engine failed due to coolant leaking into the cylinders, a problem diagnosed and confirmed by Ford technicians. Both engines are no longer in the vehicle, but documentation is available upon request. My safety and the safety of others were put at significant risk on two separate occasions. The first engine failed at 67,000 miles, leading to the engine blowing while I was driving on the highway. This nearly caused an accident as the vehicle suddenly lost power. The second engine, which was a replacement from a 2018 Ford Edge with the same 2.0L EcoBoost engine, also failed in a similar manner at 87,000 miles, again while I was driving on the highway. On this occasion, I was left stranded on the side of the highway in the desert for 7 hours in over 100-degree weather, further endangering my safety. The problem was diagnosed and confirmed by a Ford dealership on both occasions. The first failure was diagnosed as coolant leaking into cylinder 3, causing the vehicle to misfire and eventually leading to the engine blowing. The second engine was inspected by a Ford repair technician during a recall service, where the same coolant leak issue was diagnosed. Less than two months after this diagnosis, the second engine also blew while I was driving. Ford service technicians inspected and confirmed the problem both times. Repair and diagnostic reports are available. The first indication of the problem with the original engine was a check engine light so I took the vehicle to Ford. The dealership diagnosed the issue as coolant leaking into cylinder 3, causing misfires. Despite this diagnosis, the engine failed before I could arrange for the recommended long block replacement. The second engine began exhibiting the same symptoms—misfiring and coolant loss—shortly before it also failed.

No warning lights before or after the problem occurred. Driving about 25mph with traffic heard loud noise like something broke then sounded like plastic was dragging, the engine was a lot louder. I got it off traffic and pulled over. Nothing under the car. No warning or engine lights came on. Dealer told me it was a fly wheel on 6/26 and covered under warranty. Said it would take 2 weeks to repair (July 5). I kept calling for status on my car with no call back from the service manager. I finally had to complain (although I was afraid to since they had my car), and they called on 7/12 said it's not the fly wheel like they thought, they said I need a whole new transmission. They don't know what cause it but maybe something broke inside the transmission caused damage to it. $7600 cost to replace it. Not covered under warranty. We contacted another mechanic who says it's probably the torque something (arm?) that broke. I paid what to me is a lot of money for the car. It also needed a completely new engine at 44k miles which was covered under warranty. For the amount of money I paid for the car it's crazy I have to shell out $7600 more.

I was told there was a possibility of an engine fire if left as it was. I had to pay $9469.44 for a new engine! Many forums show this same issue happening with the same year/make/model. Ford should be held accountable for a known defect in the block that was not corrected through a recall.

check engine light came on, when assessed I was told it was a cylinder 3 misfire. Car began overheating while driving down the highway. Took it to a shop who performed block test > found combustion gases in cooling system caused by blown head gasket > replaced head gasket, timing chains & sprockets. After head gasket was replaced there was white smoke & misfire at cold start up - (been this almost ever since we replaced the head gasket). Shop then tested cooling system for combustion gases > found head gasket leaking due to cracking block at gasket surface > replaced complete engine assembly.

At 83,000 miles the car exhibited a P0301 check engine light for a misfire. Several troubleshooting steps were taken including new spark plugs, swapped ignition coils and then troublehooting shifted to checking for the known coolant intrusion issue. TSB 22-2229 was followed and after pressurizing the coolant system to 21 psi and inserting an endoscope visual confirmation of coolant leaking into the cylinder from the head gasket was discovered. This is a known issue to Ford that they have not acknowledged other than a TSB which advises to replacing replace the long block. We are going this route to the quote of $8,818.15. Due to Ford's change in coolant passage design they have created an engine with known issues that they are failing to warranty.

After having it looked at and doing a tune up, a week later there was no heat, the coolant warning light went on and temperature gauge was fluctuating while on the highway and had to pull off. Diagnosis by independent service center was the coolant leaking into the cylinder due to defective engine block casting. In September of 2022, my flex plate on my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium broke. This is a major component of the engine and $2,000+ fix. I was told by the mechanic that other Ford Edge’s were experiencing this, it was not a recall. Well, about a year and half later the flex plate broke AGAIN. This time with me driving down the road. The car completely stopped. I’ve never been more afraid in my life of getting hit. Long story short, after bringing my car in AGAIN for this issue, I was told by the mechanic that though they can replace the flex plate free of charge because it was under warranty, it damaged other components in the engine to the point where it’s inevitable that my ford will be undrivable soon. They also told me that there was a recall out for this issue so that I can be reimbursed for the previous work. So many others have experienced this. I called the Ford dealership to confirm the recall. However, they told me that it wasn’t a recall but a “Customer Service Satisfaction” program. Meaning it’s not officially a recall but enough people have experienced it that they were reimbursing some drivers. This “program” had an expiration date of 3-31-23. I had my car serviced the first time prior to this date but had no idea about this “program”. I received no notification. After my flex plate was fixed for the second time now, I submitted my receipts for reimbursement for the service I paid for the flex plate in 2022. I was denied because I was out of the time frame where they were giving refunds. Along with this my Ford continued to get worse because of engine damage to the point where I couldn’t safely drive it anymore. I was forced to get an another vehicle and because of the condition it was in with the engine sound and damage, I got very little for it. I actually had to rollover thousands of the remaining loan balance to my new car loan. This absolutely needs to be a RECALL. I am so upset, confused and financially drained from all of this. Vehicle check engine light came on and at the same time the vehicle started running rough which is when I took it to the dealership to be diagnosed. It’s a safety concern because this can cause overheating and a fire. On top of that the known defect has ruined my engine. This has been an ongoing issue for the ecoboost engine for many people but has yet to be recalled. Vehicle has not been driven since being diagnosed.

Overheat/Power loss indication on 2016 Ford Edge with Ecoboost 2.0 resulting coolant leakage into #2 cylinder verified by dealer (failure per TSB [XXX]). Prior TSBs [XXX] have been issued for same problem, but Ford did not assign our VIN to those bulletins. Problem should have been identified when vehicle was under warranty if TSB application were complete. We had P302 code (cylinder 2 misfire), so plugs/coils were replaced. 3 days later ([XXX]) we were traveling home from dinner (approx. 35 MPH, about 3 miles from home) and got a "Overheat" indicator with an indicator stating something similar to "Engine Loss of Power" light. Parked car at home, topped off coolant the next morning and had white smoke from the exhaust upon start-up. Vehicle towed to Ford dealer (01/09/24)...vehicle had not been driven, awaiting dealer availability for diagnosis. Relevant Ford dealer notes on Repair Order are as follows: "PRESSURIZE COOLING SYSTEM AND LEFT OVERNIGHT, FOUND IN A.M. LOSS OF MOST OF PRESSURE. CHECK HISTORY FAULT CODES, FOUND P0302, P0217. REMOVE CYL 2 SPARKPLUG AND CHECK WITH BORESCOPE. FOUND EVIDENCE OF MINOR COOLANT INTRUSION, CLEAN PISTON AND SHINY SLIGHTLY WET. FAILED ENGINE TSB [XXX]. NEED REPLACE LONG BLOCK." There are multiple reports of engine fires and other issues resulting from this condition [XXX] ). This is my mother-in-law's vehicle and I'm advocating for her. I contacted Ford Customer Care, said that they couldn't do anything to help due to family not meeting standards for incentives...in other words since my mother-in-law doesn't buy cars annually, they won't help even though she has been a loyal ford customer. They referred me to NHTSA to request that the VIN be added to the TSB, then they may cover repairs. Contacted NHTSA who confirms that is solely Ford's decision. They stated that Ford routinely misstates NHTSA's role in this process. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

As identified by my VIN number, I have a 2016 Ecoboost Ford Edge. Since 2022 I've been dealing with a failing engine from constant leaking of coolant fluids into the internals of the engine. This leaking of coolant is causing excessive white smoke to push out of my vehicles exhaust system. I'm constantly putting additional coolant into the reserva. I've been periodically stranded stranded on the side of the roadway from the engine overheating. Until I discovered that there is a known issue with this vehicle, I have spend hundreds of dollar on repairs based on the check engine light codes. Then on Jun 17th, 2024 I took my vehicle to a Ford service center and after paying over three hundred dollars for an diagnostics test I was told I need a new engine.

Coolant is leaking into the engine cylinders and burning through coolant rapidly. The exact issue that is referenced in recall 20V469000. My vehicle is currently not eligible for this recall, based on a VIN search on Ford.com and from speaking to a Ford customer service rep. It's my understanding that this problem can lead to engine failure or fire which is a significant risk to me and my family. No warning lamps or messages came on at any point. I only realized that the coolant tank was completely empty once I noticed that my heater was blowing cold air and did some internet research. My local Ford Dealer (DeNooyer Ford, Vicksburg, MI) has inspected and diagnosed, confirming that this is indeed the problem and that the vehicle requires a long block engine replacement. The quote for replacement starts at $8,000. If further inspection is needed from NHTSA, the vehicle will be available until I am able to replace the engine or sell.

Dec 19, 2023

My 2016 Ford Edge with 86k miles encountered a well-known EcoBoost engine problem (TSB 22-2229) where there was coolant intrusion into the cylinder causing a rough start and codes P0302 (cylinder #2 misfire) and P1316 (misfire in first 1000 RPM). My understanding is that this problem can potentially lead to an engine fire. The dealership I bought the Edge from replaced the engine block at my expense, not because the block itself was damaged, but because the newer block doesn't cause the head gasket failure or leakage between the coolant system and the cylinders. I requested a buyback from Ford but it was denied with no explanation given other than the list of general criteria for denial. It would appear based on those general criteria that it was probably denied because the vehicle is out of warranty, I encountered problem after warranty expiration/18k miles, and only one repair job (replacing the engine) appears to have repaired it. But it is clearly a defective engine - only question is how long Ford has known about it. I requested just a refund of the repair cost (engine replacement), but that was also denied. Ford customer care said they would give me an extended warranty as a "goodwill gesture" but this does not cover the sunk cost of the engine replacement and they could not promise me it would cover this same problem if it occurred again.

Ford Edge coolant leak causing engine failure

Nov 28, 2023

Automobile overheats due to the loss of antifreeze coolant into the engine piston cylinder. This is a known 2016 Ecoboost engine problem where a crack develops in the engine block and the coolant leaks/intrudes into the piston cylinder. Sudden loss of power at any speeds when the engine overheats. Repair for this problem requires an engine replacement with a newer, redesigned version of the engine block.

Nov 27, 2023

My 2016 Ford Edge equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine had coolant leak into the engine cylinders and my check engine light came on. Upon contacting Ford, they said it happens and I should be fine to take a 1,046-mile road trip to Colorado and back home. I then had my hometown mechanic look at the problem and he said I had a P0304 problem and that I need to stop driving the car immediately. He printed off the Technical Service Bulletin dated 06/26/2019. He said if I drove it, it would overheat and potentially catch fire. I immediately drove it to the Ford dealership I purchased this car from and after checking they said I needed a new engine, and I would pay approximately $4,700.00 right before the holidays. I rented a car for my trip and when I returned, I called the dealership on 11/14/23 and told them to put the new engine in as I can't afford this expense or another vehicle. The bill amounted to $5,955.80 and the difference the dealership said they would bill to Ford, and they would get reimbursed, but I had to pay $4,700.00. This was not on my radar, budget or understanding as the defect was known since 2019 and I had this car in to my Ford dealership for maintenance many times after this and not one word was mentioned about this faulty engine design. I am single mother with no child support. Shame on Ford!

I own a 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD Ecoboost with all of the symptoms of the TSB that Ford released on June 9, 2022 (2.0L EcoBoost - Coolant In Cylinders, White Exhaust Smoke And/Or Illuminated MIL). I brought it for service at Palm Springs Ford in September and received a very large estimate (approx $13,000) to replace the engine, motor and transmission mounts, etc. This is not something that I had expected nor can afford at this time. I see no recall available for this issue. The vehicle is seven (7) years old with 75,932.4 miles and I cannot imagine that coolant leaks and engine failures are a normal feature for a car of this age and with this mileage. I planned to drive this car for several more years and I am disappointed in Ford’s lack of quality control/assurance.

I had my vehicle serviced (oil change, tire rotation, fluid levels topped off) before we took a trip to Florida from Massachusetts. On the way home from the trip we experienced no heat in our vehicle so we had the vehicle checked out thinking maybe the thermostat needed replacing. Instead the repair shop found the coolant level down by over 1 gallon. They performed a pressure check for leaks and found none. They informed me that there was a for the 2016 Ford Edge. We found an article on line that stated TSB [XXX] superseded TSB [XXX]. I then went to my Ford Dealer to explain the issue that we experienced the issues associated with that TSB and they informed me that my vehicle had no recalls. Ford informed me that it depended on build dates which seems odd when the issue covers several years of this make and model how can it come down to a single date. We got no warning lights lights just the white smoke from the exhaust as well as the loss of a lot of coolant. Looking for direction on how to proceed, I feel this should be covered by Ford because of the numerous issues reported as well as low mileage for the 7 year old vehicle. My vehicle began to have a very low idle when first starting it. Within a week or so the check engine light came on. The day after the light came on, my vehicle almost didn't start up and so I took it to the dealership. I was told that my engine was no longer good due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder and that my car needed a new engine at less than 70,000 miles. My vehicle has been serviced and maintained by Ford since it was new. Ford agreed to pay for 40% of the total cost ($7,615).

Vehicle is suffering from the known Ford 2.0 EcoBoost Engineering defect "coolant intrusion". Vehicle has 76K miles and because it is out of warranty period, requires a total engine replacement at the cost of over $8000. At this time Ford Customer Care is not willing to offer Customer Satisfaction programs to assist or recall (even though they did recall the 1.5 EcoBoost). Ford has lost a loyal customer as I no longer can justify brand loyalty (father and grandfather both worked for Ford) because of lack of confidence in their Engineering and Quality.

Head gasket failed leading to coolant leaking into the head causing over heating and cracking the head.engine had to be replaced

Oct 9, 2023

On, or around, August 10th, I was driving my 2016 Ford Edge on the freeway, when my car started to stutter. I was not sure if the car would stall in rush hour traffic. The check engine light came on. After that, the car was difficult to start and ran roughly for several minutes. I also noticed that the car had started to use a lot of anti-freeze/coolant. I had the car diagnosed by an independent mechanic and found that the coolant was leaking into an engine cylinder. After researching the matter, it appears that this is a fairly common occurrence with the Ford Edge. There have been recalls for this problem, but my vin number is not one listed on the recall, although it is in the same year and the same problem. I am seeking help in getting this manufacturing failure resolved. I am not currently driving the vehicle, at the problem was getting worse. The vehicle is available for inspection.

I'm experiencing rough engine idle at stop lights or parked, in in gear (under load). At engine start, I am experiencing white smoke from exhaust, some engine mis-fires and low coolant. I started to look up similar experiences and it seems that it is a know issue by Ford, in which coolant is leaking into engine. I have engine power latency from full stop, low fuel economy and steady engine clicking noise/rattle.

Sep 29, 2023

The issue is with the 2.0 Eco Boast Engine on a 2016 Ford Edge with 50,000 miles on it. White smoke was coming from both tailpipes. Engine light come on and then a warning light came on that car was switching to low power mode to prevent overheating. This happened while driving to doctor. I was able to make it home safely and immediately called the dealer and slowly drove the car to dealer. They informed me that I needed a new engine and coolant was leaking into the engine, causing this issue. The car has been at dealer for over a week while waiting for a new engine and parts. We are repairing the engine. Invoice for this work won't be available until next week but cost is around $8,000.00. No help from Ford per several telephone conversations with them. Dealer did contact Ford on our behalf and Ford is offering no assistance. After doing research on line regarding this issue, I discovered that this is a very common problem with this engine and Ford knew about the issue and continued to put these engines into cars. Some cars have even caught fire due to this engine issue. There is a class action lawsuit pending in CA for this very same reason.

Rattling noise under hood with vibration that occurs when starting vehicle. Check engine light on. Dealership states "this is a know Coolant intrusion issue in 2.0L Ecoboost engines and the whole engine needs to be replaced." Was told I could still drive it even though "it will drive rough." Articles regarding this issue state further engine damage can occur if driven and in severe cases fire. This is a safety issue caused by faulty manufacturing and should be resolved.

I have a warranty with Jones Junction Kia. I couldn't take my truck anywhere else. The engine light kept coming on and going off. Well I got all the maintenance as needed however. I was told that when any Ford reaches almost 100000 miles that it's a defect that coolant leaks into the engine. Well I never heard such. Come to fine out? The adjusters had to tell the mechanics what was wrong because they couldn't understand what was happening with my truck. The adjusters said my engine needed to be replace because of several other Fords are habi g this same issue. They also repaired my brakes. Jones Kia twice within a 2 month span. And the brake light came on and stayed on. If you need more details ols contact me.

[XXX] #:~:text [XXX] i just had to pay out of pocket $8,500.00 to replace the engine for a known issue with their eco boost 2.0 engine. Ford is aware of this and has been for many years yet no recall despite the safety issues and out of pocket expense to owners of the Edge, Escape, and other Eco Boost engine models. Spoke with Ford Customer Relations and was told nothing can be done. How are there two class action lawsuits in place, yet no recall to have these known defective engines replaced? Ford has been aware of the engineering and manufacturing flaws yet continues to sell these models in a fraudulent manner. Risk of fire, car stopping in traffic are just several catastrophic outcomes, not to mention having to replace the engine at owners expense as soon as the 3/36 warranty passes. CAR WAS MISFIRING AND ROUGH STARTING WITH WHITE SMOKE OUT OF THE EXHAUST. TOOK IT TO MY SERVICE ADVISOR AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS ISSUE WITH THE COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE AND THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE. THEY USED A TEMPORARY FIX WITH A K-SEAL UNTIL WE DECIDED ON WHAT TO DO. I RECENTLY SEARCHED ABOUT THIS ISSUE ONLINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS LEAK COULD CAUSE THE CAR TO OVERHEAT AND CATCH FIRE WHICH IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT FORD HAD A RECALL ON THIS ON ECOBOOST TYPE ENGINE WITH OTHER MODELS. I CALLED MY FORD DEALERSHIP AND FORD CUSTOMER CARE AND THEY ARE NOT SHOWING A RECALL. MY CAR IS IN GREAT SHAPE AND HAS 108,000 MILES. READING THE AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE ABOUT THE SAME FORD EDGE 2.0 ECOBOOST ENGINE PROBLEMS AND THE DANGER WITH THE RISK OF FIRE SHOULD BE CAUSE FOR THIS TO BE AN IMMEDIATE RECALL IN WHICH FORD SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE.

Aug 23, 2023

Well, the car check engine light started flashing and my entire car started shaking, my coolant levels went from in between the max and min line to super below the minimum line, from what I've gathered there has been a major issue with your engine manufacturing for Ford Edges in 2015-2018 where the head gasket was not designed or manufactured correctly, thereby allowing coolant to leak out damaging the engine. it seems that several people have been running into this issue and nothing has been done about it, and your dealerships are charging to have the long block or flat out the entire engine replaced having customers pay out of their own pocket to fix a known issue your cars have been having for years when, having the issue leading to the car effectively being totaled should be repaired and covered by Ford via a recall due to the gravity of the issue itself, and the issue being caused from the manufacturer themselves. I've taken my car to several mechanics, and they all said the same thing about this problem with coolant getting into the cylinders and make the car completely useless. I had a cylinder 4 misfire at the beginning of this year and assumed it was the spark plugs so I replaced them all, and then the check engine light came on again and it said the same problem, so I took I into a mechanic and they told me about the coolant problem in June, and that it could be an issue I deal with and that they had seen that alot. But my car has been flashing for the last couple days I believe on August 20th.

My check engine light came on as my car started rough and white smoke was coming out of the engine and tailpipes. I immediately shut the car off and had it towed to Dahl Ford. I got a call later that morning that I needed an entire new engine due to a defective coolant design that caused the coolant to leak down on the engine and could start the engine on fire. I have 65,000 miles on this vehicle and have had all service completed by Dahl Ford which has only been oil changes. Dahl Ford had me call Ford Motor in Detroit because they have had so many engines with this coolant defective designed engine that can start a fire in the engine. They said Ford put out a TSB #22-2229 in June 2022 but has not done a recall and told me to report this to NHTSA. New engine replacement cost $6800.00 which I had to replace.

This happened in late June when I started my car it had white smoke coming out of the exhaust which cleared and no warning light on. I drove it to work and back and we checked coolant, and it was low so added and the next time I drove it, the check engine light went on! I called the Ford Dealership near me which is about an hour away and made an appointment to take on July 14th. The diagnosis was coolant leaking into my second cylinder and the block where head sits is worn down. I need a new long block, engine! $6000 was the quote!!!! My car is a 2016 Ford Edge with 75725 miles on it! I called Ford Customer Service and this car is not eligible for Financial Assistance and I have not heard from the Corporate Office! I have seen complaints of exactly the same thing and some people are getting Ford to help with the bill and not sure how they decipher what vehicle does or does not qualify! I am working on this issue and will not settle for nothing! I have never experienced anything like this, this is terrible! Who can afford this at this time in our lives and why???? It is a Ford issue not the consumer!!!! They have known about this for quite some time and the block on my car being worn is a manufacturing defect, it happened in the casting of the block, that car should have never left the plant with the correct inspection, where were the inspectors on this?? Ford used to give their dealerships a budget to help out issues like this for their customers but that has ended so nothing the dealership can do but fix your car and you pay the bill and good luck after that! As a Ford customer I have been taken advantage of, my safety was put in jeopardy and there is no loyalty at all to the customer!!! Not good for them! This car should have a recall on it and they should foot my bill and every other person who has experienced this and there are a lot of us!!!!! Ford should take responsibility for their poor actions!

The vehicle started to make a low rattling noise that grew louder each time the vehicle was idling. We now believe the flexplate is cracked. Ford has sent out a letter stating they are aware the flexplate may crack but they are not willing to cover repairs on the vehicle after a certain time period, which has already passed. They state in the letter to not bring vehicles in unless they are making a rattling noise.

Car has a little over 100,000 miles 2017 Ford edge. Engine light came on, took to a Ford dealership where we were informed that coolant was leaking into the cylinders and would need to replace the whole engine. From researching this issue I have discovered that this seems to be a big problem with not just my car but others as well and ones with less miles and yet Ford will not pay for replacement or issue a recall on this issue. The car is sitting at the dealership now as we think about what should be done next.

In 2016, I purchased a new Ford Edge. In June 2023, I'm informed by Ford Certified Personnel that the engine has a "Coolant Inclusion" issue requiring replacement with a new engine. This problem caused by a design flaw in the engine that Ford was aware of in 2009 and continued to install without repair or recall. Research information shows it can cause overheating and possible vehicle fire. My service records can be verified with Brinson Ford, Athens TX. [XXX], Service Advisor. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Rough idling on start up and engine light came on. After taking car to a local repair shop, mechanic noticed that vehicle was consuming coolant and the engine was cracked. They advised taking it to dealer. Ford dealer confirmed diagnosis. Vehicle had 93304 miles on it and Ford has a Technical service bulletin out on it. Was originally quoted $6,000 to replace engine. After a lot of negotiating with Ford Customer Satisfaction Program, we paid $1,685 to replace engine. Ford has known about this issue for quite a while and in my opinion, should have issued a recall. There have been reports from others that the engine has caught fire.

The contact stated that while accelerating while making a left or right turn, the brake pedal was depressed, and the contact heard liquid rotating coming from the hood of the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that while shifted into reverse(R), the vehicle started to shudder. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant had leaked into cylinder #2. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided information for TSB Number: 22-2133 to repair the vehicle. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

Coolant leak to inside the piston engine

Coolant is leaking into the engine cylinders and now the engine does not run.

Jun 7, 2023

My 2016 Ford Edge with a 2.0L engine has a crack in the upper compartment of #1 cylinder. This is allowing coolant intrusion in to the cylinder causing a misfire. Ford has issued a service bulletin for the issue 22-2229. My vehicle has 89615 miles on it, and has been properly maintained over the years. This seems like from a quick google search is a wide spread problem with these vehicles. Will there be a recall or some type of relief from the cost of this repair?

My car has 66,000 miles on it. It was bought on 9-10-2016 brand new. On 5/21/23 my car would not start. I had it towed to my mechanic who diagnosed coolant intrusion in cylinder 2. I had it towed to the dealer after Ford confirmed it would be covered under TSB 19-2346 on 5-26-23. This Tsb-19-2346 affects thousands of cars, with the early ecoboost engines. The cars are suddenly catching on fire or seizing while being driven!!!! I had it towed to Ford who told me the Transmission was bad and it would be covered under Ford's #22N12 bulletin on 5-30-23. I was shocked the transmission was also bad! I than asked the dealer what about the motor? It's seized as I told you 4 days earlier due to coolant intrusion? The mechanic will check that also, I will call Ford again, re the motor. 2 days later, after I called the dealer, he verified the cylinder intrusion in #2. He informed me that it would not be covered! Now their giving me the run around re tsb 19-2346 bulletin. Which never was sent to any of the owners, of these dangerous cars! The Dealer is putting together a parts list, the cost is around 7,000! My car has been serviced at the recommended schedule. Ford's quality has gone from safe, to dangerous, unreliable and defective! I found both Tsb on the engine and transmission online. Along with hundreds of thousands of other affected consumers! This is unacceptable & unexcusable! Safety 1st is apparently now LAST With FORD!!! I will never buy another FORD! Ford knows about the ecoboost engines suddenly, starting on fire or seizing while being driven and is doing nothing about, these DANGEROUS CARS!!!

May 20, 2023

When you start the car it acts as if it wants to bogg down and stall out going down road. Took car to ford and they said,"oh, we have a service bulletin on this car for coolant getting into the engine causing engine to over heat or misfire, it is a defect in the 2.0 ecoboost engines, and we have to replace your engine for 7,600." This is in multiple vehicles, class action law suits, engines over heating, some catch fire. Ford needs to be investigated for defective motors in these vehicles.

The radiator fluid was disappearing. Could not find a leak. Took it to the dealer and they indicated that the fluid was leaking into #2 cylinder from a crack in the engine long block. Therefore, if the vehicle was continued to be driven it could cause a potential fire. Ford has a TSB on this vehicle( TSB # 22-2229 and 22-2133. It is now undriveable and Ford has not done a recall. My 2016 Ford Edge Titanium had a blown brake line so I took it in for repairs which is where I discovered that there was a head gasket leak and that the coolant reservoir was empty, and the axil was leaking. There were no puddles or other obvious indicators that there was anything wrong with the head gasket. No engine lights/codes were showing up. The mechanic at the Ford Dealership quoted me $5k to fix the head gasket and $10k for all of the repairs to include the brake line and 4 new tires. I have owned this car for 4 years and have had it serviced regularly.

This vehicle only has 71,000 miles on it. Car began running rough, then Engine light came on. I took it to a local repair shop and was discovered to have Cylinder Mis-fire P0304 code. There was also white smoke coming from the tailpipe. They looked into the cylinder and saw that coolant had breached the cylinder. They found a Technical Service Bulletin for this exact problem, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10162071-0001.pdf. The fix is to replace the engine, which rough estimates indicate upwards of $8,000. This issue should be an official recall. I’ve noticed many complaints on this site referencing the same issue.

My 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD 2.0L (65,000 Miles on engine) Ecoboost Engine started to experience a rough idle on a cold start, which would run normal after about 15 seconds, I also noticed the smell off coolant and a low level coolant in the reservoir but could not find a leak. These symptoms went on for about a month, then one day the engine light popped on while driving. I attached my Code Reader which resulted in a P0302 Engine Misfire Code. I attempted to remove the #2 spark plug. The spark plug was seized in the engine head. After research on-line. I found out this is a known issue by Ford for this engine. Engine coolant leaking into the cylinders (a design flaw which was corrected in 2019 for new vehicles). Technical Service Bulletin 22-2229. For Motor Company is only repairing vehicles under warranty. So consumers like myself that trusted the Ford name/product are being stuck with the repair bill. My repair bill is $6,563.29 , this was for a New Engine Long Block which is Ford Motor Company's recommended fix for their flawed design or their engine. The effected engines include 1.5L, 1.6L and 2.0L Ecoboost engines.

The engine needs replacing. With no warning my check engine light came on. Car had trouble starting and then progressed into smoke coming from tailpipes. Took car to Ford dealer. Told need new engine, there is a flaw in engine block allowing coolant to leak into cylinders. Car has only 72000 miles. Could have resulted in fire if I continued to drive it. Ford needs to issue a recall on these engines immediately.

Engine malfunction due to engine coolant leaking in to #2 cylinder. Check engine warning light came on intermittently. Car didn’t pass New York State Emissions test. Car can’t be re-registered in NYS without passing Emissions test. Had car towed to Ford Service Center for diagnosis. Ford diagnosis - car engine and assembly needs to be replaced with re-designed long block engine for an estimated repair cost of $6637 plus tax. Ford is not covering engine defect that resulted in engine coolant leaking into #2 cylinder causing misfire and engine check warning light to come on. Due to this design fault, Ford should issue a recall on our 2016 Ford Edge as the car is unsafe to drive. Ford should cover the cost of the engine repair, parts and labor, due to this design fault.

Check engine light turned on after the whole car rumbled and seemed to struggle to start. Took car into dealership to get code checked out and it was a misfire. We made the next available appointment at the dealership which was over a month later, but were told to not bring in the car again unless another misfire happened before the appointment. More misfires started occuring and more frequently about 2 weeks later, since the dealership had no availability, I brought the car into my own mechanic who told us it was a coolant leak into cylinders 2 and 4 causing the misfires, it was most likely a head gasket issue. Finally brought it to the dealer appointment who went radio silent unless we called for almost a week. They intially stated that Ford would cover the costs since its a known issue with the engine in this model and year, but they didn't initially take a photo when they reproduced the coolant leak and had trouble reproducing it again. They eventually reproduced the coolant leak but back tracked that Ford would cover the costs of the known issue, since it was past the 5 year warranty. The codes were P0302, P0304, P0316, which were misfire in cylinder 2, misfire in cylinder 4 and random misfire. The cause is a known head gasket problem with the engine, and that Ford did not recommend a head gasket replacement but a brand new engine due to known issues with the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. Our car has under 50,000 miles on it, however it is past the 5 year warranty period as stated earlier, so Ford won't help cover any repairs with their known defect in their engine. I bought a new 2016 Ford Edge and have it serviced regularly at the dealer. My service record is exemplary and it is documented. My car has 94K miles. I have had work done by the dealer recently (new tires, new axle) and there was no advisement of an engine issue, absolutely nothing was said. About 7 days ago I got a warning light out of the blue, and took it in immediately. I was told it was a "catastrophic engine failure" due to coolant leaking into the engine because the coolant pump failed. I was told "it just happens." As I researched this on the web I discovered that there are thousands (possibly tens of thousands, the amount on the web is overwhelming) of people with the same catastrophe and outcomes that were all very similar: engine replacements cost 10K and can take months -- one fellow has been without his car for seven months. That is not an option for me. Frankly I am shocked at The Ford Motor Company and I mean that. What are they thinking???There is a Ford truck engine in that car and it should not be failing at 94K, especially after my record of service and especially after this problem has been known for years. I'm not kidding -- this car is 5 years old and looks 5 months old. I need resolution and I need it quickly and I am not encouraged by the reports I see. My issue is not with my dealer, it is with Ford dragging their heels on a solution. I am at my wit's end.

There is a known problem with coolant leaking into the cylinder damaging the gasket. The only fix is to replace the entire engine block at a cost (in my case) of $8361. This seems unreasonable of a 6 year old car with 64,000 miles on it. This is a known problem to Ford as evidenced by the necessity of Techical Service Bulletin 19-2208 issued by Ford in June 2019. Fortunately, My engine light came on alerting me to the problem. That apparently doesn’t always happen meaning the engine could have stopped working while I was driving. Ford dealers are still selling these vehicles used on their lots with no need to disclose this problem because no recall has been ordered. Hoping that this can be rectified to help out a significant number of drivers who’ve had to fix their vehicles at a substantial cost and to force Ford to stop selling them used without repair

On May 13, 2022, my Ford Edge was taken to the Local Ford Dealer for a spoiled coil. At 52,000 miles, the coolant had leaked into the cylinders and caused the engine block to crack. This resulted in me needing a whole new engine. Thankfully, I had taken out an extended warranty on my vehicle or it would have cost me over $7500. I was told by the dealership that this is a known problem with these Ecoboost engines. I have always taken excellent care of my ford edge and I cannot believe Ford has not been made to recall these engines. Most people don't have an extended warranty and they should not have to pay thousands of dollars for an obvious faulty engine.

This has cost me thousands in unplanned expenses to purchase a replacement before I am ready and the lost value on my vehicle due to this issue. I noticed my coolant level was roughly an inch below the minimum line on 6/25/22. I filled my coolant to the max line. My check engine light appeared 6/28/22 for cylinder 2 misfire. I replaced all 4 spark plugs and the coil for #2, and the error message was still reading after the parts were swapped, while the vehicle was off. A few days later I noticed my coolant was again an inch below the minimum line, so I refilled my coolant (refilled roughly 5 times until today, 7/21/22). It always dropped and held to an inch below the minimum line. My check engine light reappeared on 7/12/22 so I took vehicle for diagnostics 7/21/22 at Inver Grove Ford, MN 55087. Tech confirmed vehicle is still misfiring for cylinder #2 so they removed the coil and smelled coolant entering the combustion area, leading them to insert a camera and saw coolant in #2 and #3. They recommended a total new engine (assuming one with a long block to avoid this issue again in the future), for $9,150.00. My vehicle is 6 years old with less than 100k in miles. The dealership informed me this is an issue Ford is aware of, they have put out a Technical Service Bulletin (19-2139) but are unwilling to fix this issue for customers. The tech informed they have since redesigned the engine so this fault is less likely in newer models. I was unaware of this common issue until my check engine light came on and brought it to a dealership. This poses a great danger as with low levels of coolant “localized overheating of the engine cylinder head may cause the cylinder head to crack, causing a pressurized oil leak that may result in a fire in the engine compartment.” (Recall 17S09). The current issues people are facing are incredibly similar to previous recalls. It is unsafe for consumers to unknowingly drive a vehicle in which the seller knows has a risk of fault, and has since corrected such fault in later models.

The vehicle is out of the five-year warranty period by a year, but still within the mileage period (currently has 46,700 miles, with the limit being 50,000). The 2017 model of the same vehicle has a recall for the same issue, but Ford is not acknowledging the issue for 2016 models.

Not having the vehicle for that long, I came across the check engine light that went off. The code that mechanics pulled was a misfire in a cylinder. I thought this would be an easy fix of spark plugs and plug wires. This was not the case. I spent $200 at a mechanic shop that said it was a fuel injector problem. This did not fix it because they would clear the code and it came back. They did further research and found out there is a Technical service bulletin report. TSB 19-2346. I took it to Ford and they gave me the print up of what needed to be repaired. Cost over six thousand dollars to repair. I was wondering why I had to buy coolant at one point as the level would drop. It was leaking into the cylinder. I would get the white smoke coming from my exhaust as well. My safety issue was that it would overheat and possibly catch fire from other cases I heard. The dealership confirmed the issue and they are well aware of the problem since 2019.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start smoothly and started rough. The check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that they could not replicate the failure. However, upon opening the hood, the independent mechanic diagnosed that the spark plugs were corroded, the engine block was fractured and leaking antifreeze, causing damage to the engine. The independent mechanic diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and confirmed the diagnostic test result. The contact referenced Ford Technical Service Bulletin Number: 19-2346. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 79,800.

I am submitting this complaint due to concerns that others might start having the same issues that I am experiencing. My Ford Edge 2016 with just a little over 58,000 miles has a Timing Cover Oil Seal (MTCS), a Transfer Case Input Shaft Seal (FTCI), and the Axle Seal (FRAS) leaking. This is very sad that a vehicle with this few of miles has all these issues already. I am sure my Edge is not the only one having these issues. This vehicle does even leave hardball roads nor does it drove hard. I can't image what it would be like if I was rough on my vehicles. Jason

Coolant leaking into combustion chamber causes check engine light to come on. Dealer says requires a new engine. Is so prevalent they told me what was wrong before even looking at it. Ford refuses to do a recall and fix the issue. Instead, they charge you for repair. Warranty expired 1 month prior.

Engine went out last year and now this year it sounds like the flex plate and potentially the flywheel are cracked and need to be replaced. I am concerned that it was broken or was affected when my engine went out or was not balanced correctly.

Engine failure at less than 35,000 miles. Loosing coolant into cyclinder#2 misfire. Known issue by Ford, yet no recall or recourse for owners out of warranty.

Jan 19, 2022

The engine has a manufacturer's defect under Technical Service Bulletin 19-2208. Coolant is entering the cylinders. Personal safety is compromised because the engine can fail at any moment. Navigating safely through traffic with an engine fail and then being stranded on the freeway (at night in freezing cold temperatures) is a serious hazard. The problem has been confirmed by a few mechanics. Also, Ford Motor Company issued a TSB 19-2208 detailing this problem for the vehicle. Mysteriously, this TSB has suddenly disappeared but I have a pdf of their advisory detailing the defect. Ford Motor Company requested the vehicle be inspected by a certified dealership, who confirmed the problem. Ford is acknowledging the original engine manufacturer's defect. Mechanics report this is not a wear-and-tear issue. An engine warning light was the first indication of the problem. The problem appeared just after the manufacturer's 100k mile/5yr warranty expired. The vehicle has 105k miles. The vehicle was 3 months past the warranty when Ford was first contacted and notified of the problem. I have been in contact with Ford Motor Company for a couple of months trying to fix this problem. They are now refusing to discuss anything about the issue. Originally, they acknowledged the issue and their TSB proves they were aware of it even to the point of detailing the procedure for diagnostics and repair. Ford also previously reimbursed full expenses for the repair of their defective engine. Now it seems they are trying to cover it up trying to make it disappear, maybe so it does not get listed as a recall? The vehicle is a hazard to drive for my 80 year old mother who still works, but she has no other choice. I am seeing reports of this same engine fail online by other owners.

On 12-25-2021 I was driving my 2016 Ford Edge Titanium andthe check engine light came on. I took the car to a Ford dealer , they said they could not look at it till Momnday12-28-2021 they checked it out and told me the engine coolant leaked into the engine causing the engine to be replaced. They said they would run a compression check just to make sure. After waiting 1/2 a day, they told me yes, the engine had to be replaced the gasket was defective and caused the engine coolant to leak into the engine. The car has 56,400 miles and they told me to call Ford and maybe they would replace or give me some help on the cost. I called Ford and they told me car was out of warranty(which i knew) and they would do nothing. I am now on the hook for a bill for approx. $7,000. On the internet I found more than 72 complaints of the same thing happening and again Ford would do nothing. I was lucky I was not on a trip and got stranded out in the middle of no where. I feel it is Fords responsibility to see that this problem is taken care of. I do not understand why there has not been a recall on this problem,Why? If your engine stops running out on the highway you could be in for a grave accident. I know there is a Class Action lawsuit pending and like many big lawsuits they can take years to be resolved and who makes the money? the lawyers and then there will not be enough money left to pay back all these people who had to put out thousands to replace these motors. If the consumer wins there will probably be made some deal which will help Ford and the lawyers and then there will not be money left to help the consumer. Why don't you make a recall on this problem?

2018 Ford Edge Driving it Friday Dec 24th. Check engine light came on took it to Ford Dealer they said they could not get me in till Monday. Took in Monday Morning about a hour later they told me that the engine coolant leaked into the engine causing the engine to be replaced. They said they would run a Compression check just to make sure. Called this morning 12-28-2021 and said yes the engine had to be replaced the car has 56,400 miles and they told me to call Ford and maybe they would replace or give me some help Called Ford and they said Car is out of Warranty and they would do nothing. I am on the hook for approx $7,000.Checked on internet and found 72 complaints about the same problem. But yet there is no safety recall, Why? I was lucky I was in town , what if I had been on a trip. I feeel it is Fords responsibility to see that this problem is taken care of. I also read there was a Class Action Law Suit for this issue, I cannot find it on the internet I thought it would be on your website.

Broken Flywheel. 5 year/60,000 miles Warranty ended by date 4 months prior to diagnosis. Car currently has 57,000 miles. Took to dealer for engine rattle diagnostics exam. Was told it was the flywheel. Ford Technician stated it’s a common mechanical problem for this kind of vehicle. Ford is refusing to cover the repair. No prior warnings or messages presented to driver before or while engine rattle occurred. Was told to trade in the car as the flywheel can damage the engine thus totaling the vehicle.

A check engine light came on, I called Ford, told them what it was and took the earliest appointment was over a week away which they said was fine since it was just the regular check light. I Five days before the appointment, I started my car (push button), it didn't start, so I took my foot off the brake, waited a minute, put my foot back on the brake and tried starting it again, the car started but smoke started pouring out of the back of the car and the engine died. I had it towed to Ford and they said that coolant got into the fourth cylinder which ruined the engine, requiring an entirely new engine ($7000) on a six year old car Safety was put at risk because if this happened while I was driving instead of parked this could have caused a serious accident. This is a common problem among this model of car (and some other, similar models from Ford).

Engine. Engine started to leak coolant into #2 cylinder engine was miss firing and stalled. upon having inspection done by local mechanic per Ford's service bulletin was needing a long block replacement. If this unit was 1 year newer would have been under warranty. this stinks there is apparently a problem and I bought a used vehicle with a 60000 mile warranty and next year had a 100000 mile warranty. Ford knew something.

experience coolant seeping into cylinders. Causing the engine to misfire. Ford says needs the new redesigned cylinder block at the cost of 8000. This seems to be an ongoing issue with the 4 cylinder engines with vehicles.

On 7/27/21 I was on vacation in southern VT. After shopping I started the car up to wait for friends & family to get back so we could return to where we were staying. After about 5 minutes I was about to pull onto the street when my car’s warning system activated that Coolant Is Over Temperature. The temperature gauge was all the way in the red zone. After shutting the car down for about 15 minutes the temperature came down & I drove the car to a nearby garage so they could assess. The next morning they reported smoke came out of tailpipes as well as coolant. The car was towed from there to Ford of Greenfield where they found coolant in the spark plugs. The engine needed to be replaced due to this serious defect. The safety issue is this situation could have been much worse had we been driving in an area where there were higher speeds and significant traffic. This crack in the engine has caused worse issues (I’ve heard of fire in some instances, luckily not this one).

For 2 months, now, when I fill my gas tank, the vehicle fails to start. After several attempts it chugs then fires up. 2 days ago it started to make a strange humming noise that would last about 5 seconds then stop about 3-4, then come back. Sometimes the hum lasted longer. Happened for a good 5 miles. Then, as I’m driving, the engine starts choking and the rpm gauge is bouncing. Then it sounded like it wanted to shut off so I immediately pulled over. I called a local Ford dealership. I took it there and the garage manager says it sounds like a fuel pump and scheduled me to come in this week for a diagnostic or code check. Didn’t say it wasn’t safe to drive.

Check engine light came on while driving vehicle, checked at autozone on 6/14 and the report tool indicated #2 piston misfire, brought to tires plus and had 2 coils and four spark plugs replaced, issues persisted with overheating and stalling, brought into another mechanic who said to take it to a Ford dealership to identify computer error code, brought the vehicle in on 8/13 and was told there was coolant leaking into the engine and it was a known malfunction and the long block would need to be replaced.

as I was driving to work on i95N near Springfield, VA, the "coolant high temperature" warning light illuminated on my dashboard. as I was in rush hour traffic, I slowed down and moved right to diagnose the issue. i was able to exit the highway and immediately enter the lot of Sheehy Ford, Springfield VA. The dealer inspected my vehicle while I obtained a ride to work, then called me later to explain the issue. Their testing revealed error code P0301. the service advisor told me that Ford TSB 19-2346 "coolant intrusion into long block" was the issue and the recommended repair is to replace the engine. I called Ford customer service and was advised that there was no recall for this known problem and that my car was out of warranty (@70K miles). as such, Ford would not cover any of the repair expense. The Ford dealer has ordered a new engine and advised me that it will cost $7500 for parts and service. I can ask them to keep the engine for inspection, but I need to know soon. Safety was put at risk by an unforeseen issue without advance notice or warning that occurred in heavy traffic at high speed. In retrospect, I did notice excess exhaust from the vehicle prior to the incident and some difficulty starting, but there no other warning. This occurred less than 30 minutes prior to the warning light activation.

So about 3 weeks ago on Tuesday my check engine light came on my 2016 ford edge and the car was stuttering. The following day Wednesday I took it to my mechanic and they said it's a cylinder 2 misfire and replaced my spark plugs then 4 days later Sunday my check engine light came back on I could go no faster then 40mph. Had to wait till July 6th to bring it to my Ford dealership Steven's Ford in milford ct where they found I had coolant leaking into my engine which is a know Ford issue with there 2015- 2018 eco boost engines and the only repair they have is to replace the engine with a new one because a reman engine would have the same problem and the reason I could not drive my car above 40 mph is because it was only running on 3 cylinders

The scan revealed P0316 misfire on startup and P0301 cylinder 1misfire. It was discovered that the top of the cylinder 1 piston appears to be "washed" which happens when fuel is not ignited during the combustion process. This confirms the constant "toping off" of the engine coolant, which indicates a coolant leak in cylinder number 1. This diagnosis was from Christian Brothers Automotive, Acworth, Ga.

This vehicle has a design flaw within the engine. The engine and head gasket had a leak that caused the vehicle cylinder to fill with engine coolant, and caused the vehicle to unexpectedly misfire, overheat, and stall. I have also read accounts of other individuals vehicles catching fire. Thankfully this has not happened with my vehicle, however, it did stall out in the middle of the road during rush hour. As a result it was taken to FORD and they informed me that the entire engine would need to be replaced as a result of the failure.

I OWN A 2016 FORD EDGE THAT USE TO BE MY LEASED WORK VEHICLE AND I BOUGHT IT FROM THE COMPANY FOR MY WIFE ON 11/15/2019 WITH 67,696 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE ISSUES WITH THIS CAR AND I HAVE PUT EVERY MILE ON IT FROM WORK UNTIL I BOUGHT IT FROM THE COMPANY/EMKAY LEASE PROGRAM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE AS OF TODAY IS 72,853 MILES AND I HAD IT SERVICED FROM LANDMARK FORD IN PORTLAND OREGON. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME LAST WEEK ON AND I TOOK THE EDGE IN FOR SERVICE BUT NEEDED TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK TODAY SO LANDMARK FORD COULD DO A DIAGNOSTICS ON THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE AND MY DAUGHTER DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE AND HOURS LATER, I WAS NOTIFIED BY CHRIS KELSO AT LANDMARK FORD (503-598-8398) THAT COOLANT WAS GETTING INTO THE ENGINE CYLINDERS AND I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE ENGINE FOR CLOSE TO $7000.00. I HAVE DEALT WITH CHRIS FOR YEARS AND HE DOES A GREAT JOB FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. CHRIS MENTIONED THAT THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH EDGES AND A NEW ENGINE IS THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT. I TOLD CHRIS I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE AN ENGINE ON A VEHICLE I PURCHASED IN NOVEMBER OF 2019, SO WHY WOULDN'T FORD HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE, IF THEY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM? CHRIS DID NOT HAVE AN ANSWER, WHICH I CAN TELL THAT BOTHERED HIM. I'VE TAKEN GREAT CARE OF THIS FORD EDGE SINCE THE ODOMETER HAD 13 MILES ON IT FOR MY WORK FLEET VEHICLE. I'M CURRENTLY DRIVING A 2019 FORD EDGE FOR MY NEW WORK VEHICLE AND I HAVE BEEN A FORD AND A FORD EDGE FAN BUT THIS NEWS TO REPLACE THE ENGINE IS VERY UNSETTLING TO ME AT THIS TIME IN OUR LIVES. THEY FOUND COOLANT WAS GETTING INTO THE #3 CYLINDER. THEREFORE REQUIRING A NEW LONG BLOCK. WE RESEARCHED TSB19-2346 AND FOUND THE EXACT SYMPTOMS TO WHAT CAUSED MY ENGINE FAILURE,AND THIS GOES FOR ALL 2.0 LITER ECO-BOOST ENGINES. BASICALLY, A FACTORY MATERIAL DEFECT IN HEAD THAT ALLOWED COOLANT TO LEAK INTO CYLINDER BLOCK, WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE. MY FORD WARRANTY WAS EXPIRED DUE TO MY VEHICLE MILEAGE. MY EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY DUE TO WORDING IN CONTRACT WOULD ONLY COVER INTERNAL , LUBRICATED FAILURE OF ENGINE. THE DEALERSHIP DEEMED MY FAILURE TO BE AN EXTERNAL, MATERIAL CAUSE BECAUSE IT CAME FROM THE HEAD. I CALLED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY HAD NOTHING TO SAY ABOUT IT AND WOULD NOT BACK THEIR PRODUCT. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. ENGINE HAD 112489 MILES. AFTER MUCH BACK AND FORTH IT WAS DETERMINED I NEEDED A NEW ENGINE. AT THAT POINT I TOOK THE CAR TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. AGAIN AFTER MUCH BACK AND FORTH IT WAS DETERMINED THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. I CONTACTED FORD, AND THEY WOULD OFFER NO HELP ON THIS. I DID GET A NEW ENGINE AT THE FIRST SERVICE CENTER FOR $6,000.00 I WENT TO. THE FORD DEALERSHIP WAS $1,500.00 MORE. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE A NUMBER SERCVICE BULLETINS CONCERNING THIS ISSUE, AND YET FORD OFFERED NO HELP. THE LIGHT CAME ON WHEN THE CAR WAS IN MOTION.

BOUGHT A CAR WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE DEALER KNEW ABOUT THE LIGHT AND SAID WOULD BE FIXED. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME THEY STATED IT HAS A MISFIRE AND CLEARED THE CODE. IF THE LIGHT CAME BACK ON CONTACT THEM TO BRING IT IN FOR FURTHER INSPECTION. THE LIGHT CAME BACK IN WITH MINUTES AFTER DRIVING OFF. THEY STATED THERE'S A COOLANT LEAK GOING INTO THE MOTOR. WHICH CAN CAUSE THE MOTOR TO BLOW UP OR CATCH FIRE. I TRIED T GE THEM TO FIX IT AND THEY GIVE ME COLD SHOULDER SO I ASKED FOR A TRADE FOR EQUITY VALUE OR A REVERSE ON THE LOAN TO GET MY OLD VEHICLE BACK THEY WOULDN'T DO IT.

30 AUG 2020 THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE ENGINE OVERHEATED WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING OR INDICATION. THE DEALERSHIP MECHANIC TOLD ME IT WAS A KNOW ISSUE THAT THE COOLANT LEAKS ALONG THE ENGINE BLOCK. IN MY CASE IT LEAKED INTO THE 3RD CYLINDER AND CAUSED MISFIRES. THE CYLINDER IS CRACKED AND THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CURRENT MILAGE IS 64000 AND NOT COVERED UNDER THE 60000 MILE WARRANTY.

ENGINE LIGHT BACK ON WITH ROUGH START AND WHEN I WOULD GO FROM A STOP IT WOULD HESITATE. SCANNED AGAIN #2 COIL PACK .REPLACE #2 COIL PACK . LASTED ALMOST A WEEK. ENGINE LIGHT BACK ON SAME PROBLEMS. REPLACED ALL THE COIL PACKS. LASTED 1 DAY. THEN CAR OVERHEATED ON THE HIGHWAY . I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND OUT IT NEEDS AN ENGINE. COOLANT IS LEAKING INTO THE #2 CYLINDER. AT 35,000 MILES, WHEN STARTING AND THEN WHILE RUNNING CAR STARTED HESITATING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. INITIALLY DEALER REPORTED IT WAS A SPARK PLUG AND THEY REPLACED IT ONLY TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE ARISE TWO DAYS LATER. BACK AT THE DEALER AN ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT A LEAK IN THE COOLING SYSTEM CAUSED FLUID TO ENTER INTO THE 3RD CYLINDER WHICH THEN CRACKED THE ENGINE. 7 WEEKS LATER A NEW ENGINE WAS REPLACED. ONLY GUARANTEED FOR 1 YEAR AND ORIGINAL CAUSE OF ISSUE (DESIGN FLAW) NOT CORRECTED SO LIKELY TO HAPPEN AGAIN WHEN OUT OF WARRANTY. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ON MY 2016 FORD EDGE AROUND 60000 MILES. CODE READER INDICATED MISFIRE ON CYL 3. AFTER CHANGING THE SPARK PLUGS AS A POTENTIAL FIX, THE ISSUE CAME BACK. ROUGH IDLES WHEN STARTING BUT USUALLY WOULD GO AWAY AFTER A FEW SECONDS. LAST TIME I WENT TO START IT, WHITE, SWEET SMELLING SMOKE BEGAN POURING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. SHUT OFF THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY. SEVERAL OTHER DOCUMENTED CASES OF COOLANT LEAKING INTO CYLENDER LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THIS IS A HEAD GASKET OR ANOTHER ENGINE DESTROYING ISSUE. HAVING THE CAR TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC NOW.

TODAY THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE COMING OFF OF A HIGHWAY, I HAD TO PULL OVER MULTIPLE TIMES TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WHEN EVER I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AS THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE, THREE DIFFERENT TIMES IT SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, LOST ALL POWER AND SHUTDOWN THE CAR. NO POWER, LIGHTS, POWER STEERING, ETC. I HAD TO COAST TO A STOP ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE. ONCE I WAS STOPPED, TURNED OFF THE CAR AND IT RESTARTED LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED. THESE EVENTS WERE VERY DANGEROUS. ONCE WAS WHEN IT WAS RAINING SO WHEN THE CAR LOST POWER, THE WIPERS STOPPED AT 70 MPH SO I HAD TO NAVIGATE TO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE. A SECOND TIME WAS AT NIGHT DRIVING 70 MPH, WHEN IT SHUTDOWN, I LOST HEADLIGHTS AND I COULDN'T SEE. IT WAS TERRIFYING AS I WAS IN A REMOTE AREA OF I-49 WITHOUT ANY LIGHTING TO NAVIGATE TO THE SHOULDER. AGAIN, ONCE STOPPED AND PUT IN PARK, IT RESTARTED IMMEDIATELY. PLEASE NOTE, I'M NOT THE OWNER OF THIS CAR. I WAS DRIVING IT AS A LOANER FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP. THIS PROBLEM WAS SO SERIOUS I AM REPORTING DIRECTLY TO THE NHTSA AS THIS CAR HAD NO RECALLS TO ADDRESS. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET INJURIES OR DIE. I WAS TERRIFIED.

MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT READ 'CRANK CASE PRESSURE SENSOR' AND WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE 'ADD COOLANT' LIGHT CAME ON AND BEFORE I GOT TO THE NEXT TOWN, THE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON NOTIFYING ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS GOING TO SWITCH INTO THE ENGINE SAVING MODE BEING THAT IT NEEDED MORE COOLANT EMERGENTLY. I USED NEARLY A GALLON OF COOLANT THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AND BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A FORD DEALERSHIP" FOR DIAGNOSING AND SERVICING. THEY SAID I HAD A CRACKED BLOCK DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE WATER PUMP IS LOCATED INSIDE THE ENGINE INSTEAD OF OUTSIDE OF THE ENGINE ON THESE VEHICLES WHICH HAS BEEN RAISING HAVOC IN A LOT OF THESE ENGINES BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MAKE THE PROPER SEAL CAUSING A LEAK TO OCCUR AND THE MATERIAL THEY USE FOR THEIR WATER PUMP IS VERY THIN AND OFTEN TIMES CAUSES A LEAK FROM THE COOLANT THAT GOES DIRECTLY INTO THE ENGINE WHICH IT DID IN MY SITUATION AND CAUSE THE ENGINE TO CRACK. IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THIS WOULD'VE HAPPENED IT WOULD'VE BEEN DETRIMENTAL TO MYSELF, MY PASSENGERS AND OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD AT THAT TIME!

CAR STALLS OUT AND LOSES POWER AND SYMPTOMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE FATAL. THIS USUALLY HAPPENS UNDER ACCELERATION AND HAS ALMOST CAUSED 2 REAR-END ACCIDENTS. AS I ACCELERATE THE CAR THUMPS WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS AND THEN THE CAR LOSES ALL ACCELERATION. THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHEN HAPPENING ON THE HIGHWAY OR RAMP GETTING UP TO THE HIGHWAY. THESE ARE THE TWO PLACES IT CONSISTENTLY HAPPENS. ON MARCH 28TH THE DEALER CALLED TO SAY THAT THEY HAD A MEMO FROM FORD STATING SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE ENGINE AND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE! WHILE DRIVING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED (70MPH) ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY, MY CAR LOST POWER. I TRIED PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL, BUT THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, SINCE THE CARE LOST SPEED QUICKLY, AND I WAS DRIVING IN THE FAR LEFT LANE AND HAD TO NAVIGATE TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. IT WAS ALSO VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE CAR BROKE DOWN IN DETROIT. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO THE SHOULDER, AND RESTART THE VEHICLE TO TRY TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY. WHILE TRYING TO GET TO A BETTER LOCATION, THE CAR LOST POWER TWO MORE TIMES, WHILE IN STREET TRAFFIC. AGAIN, VERY DANGEROUS. SINCE THIS IS A BRAND NEW FORD EDGE (2016), WITH UNDER 10,000 MILES, IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO FOUND A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY, AND BECAUSE THERE IS STILL NO RECALL ON THAT PART, IT COULD VERY WELL HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART, LEAVING ME AT RISK AGAIN FOR INJURY, OR WORSE.
