8F35 transmission problems, poor shifts, jumpy shifts, vibration at 45-52 mph. vibration at 59-61 mph tying to figure out if it needs to stay in 7th gear or change to the final 8th gear. At any speed below 35 mpg the transmission is challenged to understand itself and its purpose on this earth. i am scared to death to drive under 35 mph because the transmission becomes extremely unstable. Up shifting then thinking it made a mistake and violently down shifting then a lazy up shift because the transmission realized it didn't need to down shift in the first place.

Component or system that failed or malfunctioned, and availability for inspection The torque converter and transmission system in my 2020 Ford Edge have malfunctioned. The vehicle experiences transmission shuddering/stuttering during normal driving, particularly during low-speed acceleration and gear changes. The vehicle remains in my possession and is available for inspection upon request. Safety risk The transmission stuttering causes hesitation, jerking, and unpredictable power delivery while driving. This creates a safety risk, especially when accelerating from a stop, merging into traffic, or driving at low speeds in congested areas. The lack of smooth and reliable acceleration increases the risk of rear-end collisions or loss of control, putting both myself and other drivers at risk. Confirmation or reproduction of the problem The issue has been consistently reproducible during normal operation of the vehicle. The symptoms have been observed repeatedly and were confirmed by a dealer/independent service center, which identified the torque converter and transmission as the source of the problem and advised that significant repairs or replacement would be required. Inspections performed The vehicle has been inspected by a dealership and/or independent repair facility. The manufacturer has not yet directly inspected the vehicle beyond dealer diagnostics, but the vehicle is available for further inspection if requested. Warning lamps, messages, or symptoms prior to failure There were no immediate warning lamps at the onset of the issue. The primary symptoms were transmission shuddering, stuttering, and rough shifting, which gradually worsened over time. These symptoms first appeared during regular driving and became more frequent and severe, indicating progressive failure of the torque converter and transmission system.

Transmission shudders and jerks up to 35 or so mph. speeds above are very jerky. took it to my ford dealer. they informed me my transmission was needing replacement. was told faulty tranny . trying to get to anywhere is very scary. very un safe.

Fluid is extremely burnt and has large amounts of metal debris in the transmission, fluid is low with no known leaks, unable to engage in neutral and in park, Shift Solenoid A stuck on, Transmission Friction Element A and E apply Time Range/Performance

Dec 1, 2025

The transmission failed abruptly, without any notice or warnings. I had to have it towed to a service shop. When I first tried to drive the vehicle, I was too nervous because the vehicle would not shift so I chose not to drive it for safety reasons. I first towed the vehicle to a shop near my house that concluded I needed a new transmission but they did not repair transmissions. I then had it towed to a transmission shop. Both shops concluded black, metal in the transmission. The manufacturer, the police or the insurance have not been involved. The vehicle provided no warning lamps or symptoms prior to the day the transmission failed in November 2025. My vehicle is only 5 years old and I have had it serviced every 6,000 miles at a Ford dealership. At no time did Ford tell my my transmission fluid was black or needed to be changed. In fact, they continued to tell me that the vehicle was running well. Upon investigation, it appears that the 2020 Ford Edge, 8 speed transmission has experienced the same issue. I also have a 2015 Ford Edge, 6 speed transmission, and I have never had an issue with metal in the transmission. I had to spend just shy of $10,000 to have my transmission, in a 5 year old vehicle replaced.

At around 47,000 miles (April 27, 2024) my car would not move when I put it in reverse to leave my house that day, the engine would just rev and it would not get into the reverse gear. Then warning light came on for the power train so I called the dealership and had it towed to their service department. They said they had to completely rebuild my transmission and it took them almost a month to complete the repairs. (May 6th, while the car was at the dealership , I received several engine warnings from my Ford app. I got my car back from the dealership about 2 weeks later) But immediately after getting my car back from the dealership there were still issues; it’s slips gears , especially from drive to first gear and first gear to second gear and the engine will rev for a while and then the entire vehicle jerks when it finally catches the next gear, also it doesn’t have enough power for steep inclines , it will just roll backwards while the engine is raving trying to climb the hill. This happened intermittently after the transmission rebuild but has since progressed to be an everyday issue. And I’ve sent it back to the dealership several times over the last year for them to fix it but it never gets fixed. They keep telling me they did a software update and that should fix the issue, but it doesn’t. It’s at the dealership again right now because it has gotten so bad that I can’t even drive the car. You start the car, put it in drive and it just revs and won’t even catch first gear. It now has around 60,000 miles. I’m the only owner of the vehicle and I take excellent care of my vehicles. I just want my vehicle to be drivable and a vehicle that is worth the price that I paid for it. I paid for a brand new vehicle, but what I got is a piece of crap. And not drivable.

Nov 22, 2025

I bought the vehicle and have had major mechanical issues with it I have replaced the motor and the full exhaust system I am having powertrain issues as well. I feel as though ford she be held accountable for all of the issues the ford edges have being they all have the same issues this should not be legal. I got this vehicle to help me build my credit and now it's hurting my credit because I can't keep up with the car payments from all the major repairs that I have had to do on a 2020 vehicle. They will not even take my vehicle as a trade so I can get from under the vehicle responsibility this has not been a reliable vehicle at all.

Nov 14, 2025

Having torque converter replaced in my 2020 with 37,000 miles on it. Transmission stutters/lags at speeds under 40. Seems to be a common issue so wanted to report. Luckily had warranty replacement. Definitely a safety concern as the car delays when you hit the gas before it goes, many times i was nearly in an accident.

Nov 6, 2025

I had this car serviced at the Ford dealership where I purchased it shortly before the warrenty ran out just to catch anything before it was not covered. Car was running well when I took it in. Copy of Invoice provided. Shortly after this visit I began to notice these symptoms not extreme at first. After a short it became quite noticeable the shuddering acting like it did not shift smoothly, going up hill was very noticeable mostly at lower speeds. I made an appointment with my local Ford dealer to have this diagnosed . They did spark plug replacement and that didn't help. They then said the next thing would be the Torque converter! We currently are unable to drive this car out of our town, until it is fixed, We are unable to trust its reliability. We had to wait for parts for a month because so many people are having to have these replaced that these parts are always out of stock ! We are extremely disappointed in FORD we WERE quite happy with this car. They need to be held accountable for these repairs people all over the internet are reporting the same thing!

Nov 1, 2025

Around 80,000 miles it started shuddering and jerking at lower speeds. It has progressively gotten worse, there is a service bulletin for it but no recall. This happened after my extended warranty was up. Quoted $9,300 for torque converter and refab transmission.

Oct 29, 2025

With no warning signs, I put my 2020 Ford Edge into Drive, but it didn't move; so, I put it into Reverse and it wouldn't move. After a minute, I was able to drive it. The next day, I was able to drive it ~1/4 mile when this sandy, gritty noise happened and the Wrench light came up on the dashboard. I pulled over, then the Check Engine Light came on, so I turned off the car. I turned it back on, and when I put it in Drive, it didn't move, so I put it in Reverse and it didn't move. I had the car towed to a Ford Dealer, who after diagnosis, told me the transmission needed to be repaired @ $8600. My car had 136,000 miles on it when this happened; I always maintained it, including a tune up, with full fluid flush, per the recommended maintenance @ 100,000 miles. I was told by the mechanic that the planetary broke up and went through the entire system, ruining it.

Oct 21, 2025

These transmissions fail prematurely. I have experienced major slippage on the highway, particularly when changing lanes in traffic or merging and needing to accelerate quickly. Most of the time it does, but occasionally the car just doesn't move with faster traffic quickly closing the gap. It is VERY scary when this happens, and there have been near misses! In another instance, the car would not go into reverse and ACTUALLY TRIED TO MOVE FORWARD WHILE IN REVERSE!!! I have found posts on forums where others have experienced this issue as well. Ford needs to be forced to issue a safety recall on these cars to have their transmissions repaired.

Oct 20, 2025

In February 2025 a dash light came on when the vehicle was studdering at 20-40 mph. Firestone said the code was a PRV, so they replaced it (approx $450), had 80k miles. Six months later it's doing the same thing and firestone said it has no codes and it could be alot of things but suspects maybe fuel pump or torque converter as they have seen it alot on the 2020 edge. A week later, I took to another mechanic when a different noise was coming during turns, and they said it was the rear differential for sure and the studdering could be several things. Thye replaced the real differential, $2500, and I replaced the plugs/egition coils which they suggested could be causing it. They also mentioned the torque converter as being a big issue in premature failing for the 2020 edge. The new real differential stopped the turning grind, and the new plugs/coils may be making it run a little better, BUT the studder is still here. A 90k mile vehicle should not be having these major safety issues! Torque converter, says transmission to me, so please investigate. I called a ford dealer because I bought the platinum extra warranty and it was expired. I asked about trade in and they said $6500 because they know the vehicle is a lemon--I still owe $23K!! Feeling stuck and worried about driving on the interstate or at speed anywhere too far from home as it could lock up and create an accident. I feel the industry knows about these failures and Ford does too and should do something.

Oct 19, 2025

I own a 2020 Ford Edge 2.0 Platinum AWD (VIN: [XXX] ). At just over 50,000 miles, the vehicle developed a noticeable shutter in the front area, which was diagnosed as a faulty torque converter in the transmission. This required replacement at a reduced cost of $1,350. Shortly after, around 52,000 miles, the vehicle developed a loud grinding noise in the rear differential area. Initially, the differential lock motor was replaced for $675, but this did not fully resolve the issue. Ultimately, the entire rear differential had to be replaced at a reduced cost of approximately $2,750, including fluids and recalibration. Ford acknowledges that there are known issues with the AWD systems in Ford Edge vehicles, yet refuses to take responsibility or offer assistance. It is unacceptable that a 5-year-old vehicle with only 52,000 miles would require thousands of dollars in repairs to remain safe and drivable. These failures pose a serious safety concern and financial burden, and I urge NHTSA to investigate this recurring issue. Transmission slipping when accelerating, also shudder when between gears

Oct 7, 2025

Edge is shuttering on slow takeoff. Dealership said it needs a new torque convertor to fix the problem. Parts and labor 2300.00 and then that might not fix the problem. This is why I purchased a Ford cause I wanted a quality vehicle. Have had nothing but ford's in the past. A recall needs to be done on these vehicles. A 5 year old edge shouldn't need this. I had a mustang that had over 250 thousand miles on it and it is still going. Please let me know if a recall is being done on this. This is a Ford titanium. Thanks

My vehicle transmission gear selector went out I believe. While having my mechanic try to see if something was happening with transmission, the vehicle was placed into neutral and the tires started spinning as if it were in drive. The vehicle does not do the appropriate action when the gear is selected. In addition, it will not reverse when selected. When the mechanic was looking at transmission and wheels began to spin while in neutral, he was under car near front tire and injured his hand due to the vehicle not doing the appropriate action. The vehicle is available for inspection if requested. There was a prior recall on the same issue for model year up to 2019 however mine is a 2020. I have seen numerous complaints of the same issue in many online forums but ford has offered no help. They have not offered anything more on this issue except for an astronomical quote to have it tested and no actual idea on how to fix it. There were zero lights that came on regarding the issue and I had no warning while driving my vehicle that stopped and would not proceed to drive when it was driving perfectly fine right before.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving 40 MPH, the transmission unintendedly downshifted before slamming into gear. In addition, the transmission upshifted independently before slamming into gear. There was an abnormal booming sound coming from the transmission. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission was malfunctioning. While the contact was driving back to the residence after picking up the vehicle from the dealer, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The contact stated that adjustments were made to the transmission. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while depressing the brake pedal, the transmission made a revving sound, and the vehicle lunged forward. The contact used force while the brake pedal was depressed to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed by the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

10/2022 2yrs owning and around 50,000 miles the all wheel drive went out due to a sensor thats not protected from the elements and of course not covered under the warranty and $900.00 dollars later they install a new one that wasn't updated in order to prevent this from happening again. 9/2/2025 3yrs later and 88,000 miles now the torque converter is going out which i was told by the ford technician that they have been seeing this alot. Of course my warranty is gone even the extended one that I purchased when I purchased this car new. So to fix this manufacturer's issue will now cost me $4,000 dollars to fix. But I was told the torque converter has been updated so I shouldn't have this issue again. So they know this is a problem which i assume is the reason for the updated converter so why isn't this a recall.

Sep 29, 2025

Transmission failure, this is a know issue, that ford wont claim as an issue.

Sep 26, 2025

Transmission issuse, jerking and shuttering. Not going in reverse and then not going in park. Transmission needs replaced now.

Sep 26, 2025

The transmission is bad. Ford dealership states it needs a new torque converter and that this is a very common issue among the edges. Also have been informed by many ford mechanics that replacing the torque converter is simply a band aid to the issue and will likely need a whole new transmission even if i replace the torque converter. I feel this is a safety issue to myself and others simply bc the transmission can fail at any moment. There were no warning lights on the dash or codes that come up related to the transmission prior to the issue occuring. When hooked up to a scan tool after the issue started there are still no warning lights or codes displayed related to the issue. I have had it at the ford dealership as well as a few other mechanics have looked at it. Nobody other than the ford dealer could tell me what was wrong with it. It stutters really bad between 20-40mph as well as above 60mph when traveling at highway speeds.

Sep 24, 2025

The car shutters when coming to a drivable speed if it’s under 35mph. The rmp will flutter every so often while driving going up hills is the worse but it will do the same even going straight.

I financed a 2020 Ford edge 2.0L AWD from West Alabama wholesale in Tuscaloosa over a year ago. It was jurking when I first bought it, so they replaced the clutches in the rear drive shafts. So some months later it started back to doing the same thing jerking when I accelerate. I took it back and they said it was the transmission going out. My extended warranty had worn off by then. So I just feel that there should have been a recall on this year Ford edge transmission and rear transfer case. I still have 4 years left to pay for this vehicle and I can't even hardly drive this vehicle. I feel that this vehicle was a lemon vehicle and that the dealership that sold this vehicle to me knew that it had all these problems without making me aware. My complaint is that this vehicle should be repaired as a courtesy to me being a Ford customer and the fact that many other Ford owners of this same vehicle has the same problems with this vehicle jerking when changing gears. All records as to attempted repairs are recorded with West Alabama wholesale in Tuscaloosa Alabama.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while shifting into gear, or while driving approximately 40 MPH, the engine sputtered. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact referenced Technical Service Bulletin: 21-2389; as a possible cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

Vehicle shutters @ speeds between 30 to 40mph. Had to replace transmission @ 93k miles.

Sep 12, 2025

Gear change struggles and shudders during 2nd to 4th gear (18-39 mph) when pressing the gas pedal. Driving in sport mode does help but not for long. This problem disappears when cruise control is activated. Went to workshop and had to replace the torque converter. Several owners report similar problems. I bought this car with a mileage of 103,000 miles and it seems to already have some jerking during gear changes but not as bad. It got worse around 120,000 miles. The safety was not of a concern, but the driving dynamics was concerning since the whole vehicle was shaking during gear changes. I checked the NHTSA website and it this vehicle did not have any recalls so far. Another slightly minor but inconvenient issue is the TPMS sensor malfunction. Most of the time the sensors seem to be working perfectly but every time I drive above 50 mph for at least half an hour the dashboard shows TPMS sensor malfunctioning. After I turned off the engine for at least 15 to 30 minutes and I turn on the engine again. The problem seems to disappear temporarily

At 80000 miles, the car started stuttering while shifting between 2 to 4th gears. The dealer diagnosed it as a bad Torque Coverter. I had this fixed and the check engine light came on as the car started missing and slipping gears. The next correction will be a transmission replacement, as the car is slipping and missing while trying to accelerate and decelerate. This is causing lurching and lack of acceleration which can lead to be rear ended or not making a left hand turn and getting hit in my side.

Sep 9, 2025

Starting at 75,000 miles the car would start jerking. It hesitates shifting between 2-3 gears. This is a HUGE safety issue, if I am driving on the highway and my car hesitates or stalls all together at high speed, lives would be lost. I took my car to the dealer for a consult and confirmed that the transmission is not shifting correctly. However no warning light, codes etc come up when they do their scan. I was told it is my issue and I need to replace my transmission.

Sep 3, 2025

The Transmission started shuddering at 70,000 miles because torque converter was having severe problems due to software which was verified by the Ford Dealership Service Department Mechanic on 9/3/2025. Ford refuses to do a recall on this matter even though my vehicle was about stall out while driving on a hill upward. There is no warning codes or anything on the log history of the vehicle computer. No indications are given which is a safety concern to drivers and bystanders.

Sep 2, 2025

1-Transmission is shuttering, jerking at low speeds when accelerating or braking to slow down. When this happens the engine shuts off right in the middle of traffic or on the freeway. 2-The transmission repair mechanic said the transmission needs to be replaced and during removal and inspection, he said it's the worst he has ever seen. 3-Ford said there is no recall on my model, but the internet search says lots of people are having the same issue with "jerking" "shuttering" at low speeds when the transmission is in lower gears. 4-Vehicle is in the shop getting a new transmission at a cost of approx. $8,000.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle sputtered while the accelerator pedal was depressed. The powertrain warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for further assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 74,492.

At around 73k miles, the transmission was starting to have trouble downshifting into lower gears. I brought it into Ford Service shop, and they said nothing was wrong with it. It keeps happening now and then since. At 114k miles, the torque converter wouldn't drop down. It was dispersing metal shavings into the transmission fluid and completely damaged the entire transmission. The entire transmission needs to be replaced, it won't even drive at all anymore. There were no warnings.

Automatic transmission is slipping as it moves through the gears. Causes the car to shudder.

Aug 19, 2025

2020 FORD EDGE started with transmission issues. Shifting hard once in second gear, shuddering worse the more car is driven. No warning lamps on dash.

Aug 18, 2025

Vehicle gradually began shuddering/transitioning harshly while accelerating, and worsening over time. Took it to a mechanic and they told me that the transmission was known to be faulty for this year of Ford Edges. It had got to the point where the torque converter needed to be replaced, and if I had continued driving with it, I was risking the car breaking down in the middle of driving on the road, unable to accelerate.

Aug 18, 2025

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle hesitated, and the transmission shifted hard to the next gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but was gradually becoming a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V011000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 89,833.

Transmission shifts hard and shutters going 20-40MPH

Aug 15, 2025

Torque converter was diagnosed as faulty at 99k miles. This led to a cascade of effects on the transmission resulting in a full transmission replacement. Early signs of failure are starting to be observed at 113k, 13k miles after replacement.

Aug 15, 2025

Car shudders and lurches upon acceleration and while utilizing gas pedal. Continues throughout the drive. Front center camera alerts to a crash when not even close to one. Sync system goes black on the screen, especially upon starting the ignition and when car is in reverse.

Aug 10, 2025

Vehicle is sputtering and shuddering when driving. No warning lights are present. Dealer did a diagnose test and found bulletin service messages relating to the vehicles concern TSB 25-2154 and the vehicle has an open campaign for this issue. Test drove my car and verified the shudder events were an issue for the torque converter slippage of 220 RPMS. The estimate to fix this issue was $4500.00.

Aug 6, 2025

Gettting told the torque converter is going out

Aug 6, 2025

Torque converter was coming apart, according to the service advisor at Bannister Ford in Marlow Heights, MD. Car was shuddering upon acceleration from a stop or slow speed and not accelerating properly. Also noticeable slipping at highway speeds and RPMs would not stay steady. No warning lights or messages, problem began at 57,000 miles and near failure at 60443.

Jul 30, 2025

Vehicle shudders when accelerating between 30 and 40 mph but can occasionally but felt up to 60 mph. I took the vehicle to Ford Covert Hutto (Texas) and was told the torque converter needed to be replaced and would cost $4,257. Upon researching I have seen hundreds of comments and threads where other people are having the same issue and repairs with this vehicle yet there is no recall. Yes, the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Yes, the problem has been reproduced and confirmed by dealer. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by professionals. No, there are no warning lights on to indicate an error. The shudder is felt very prominently by anyone in the vehicle.

Jul 29, 2025

In May/June 2025, I began to notice a shudder in my 2020 Ford Edge SEL when accelerating. I took my vehicle to the dealer to be diagnosed and was told there is a technical service bulletin for this issue and the recommendation is replacement of the torque convertor at a cost of approx $3000, since the vehicle is out of warranty (my Edge has just less than 78k miles). In looking into this issue through various forums and websites, this is a very common occurrence with Ford's 8F35 transmission that is used on the 2020 Ford Edge (and numerous other Ford models). This is a safety issues as the symptoms will (and are) getting progressively worse. It's unfortunate that Ford will not stand behind this vehicle and offer to repair an obviously faulty part.

2020 ford edge just hit 64,000 mile and transmission is slipping at lower gears seem like its a dangerous issue why isnt there a recall on this issue ford should be taking care of this

Jul 24, 2025

I started hearing a dragging noises when turning from a stop. There were no warning lights or messages displayed. This issue has been occurring for the last couple of years but was intermittent. When I drove the vehicle up into the mountains the noise became more prevalent not just when turning from a stop. It occurred anytime I turned while going up a hill. The transmission also started hesitating in low gears when going up hills (vehicle is normally in Florida with no hills). I took the vehicle in for service and they determined the rear differential was failing and needed to be replaced. I had that done and that solved the problem with the rear end, but the transmission problem continues and the service center said the transmission is failing. The vehicle has approximately 105,000 miles on it.

Jul 21, 2025

Car jerked forward and back slightly like slowly going over rumble strips when slowing to stop. When at stop felt like the car was in neutral when pushing on gas. Car revved engine, but no movement. Was able to push it to safe place, but from there it seemed locked up even in neutral when trying to push the car later. Sound like grinding clattering when revving engine and neutral.

Jul 21, 2025

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated while parked and occupied in the vehicle, while starting the vehicle or attempting to depress the accelerator pedal the AWD mollification service required warning message illuminated. The contact mention he also heard a buzzling sound coming from rear drive unit. when opening the vehicle door. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnoses. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure NHTSA Campaign Number Recall Number: 21V011000 related to the (POWER TRAIN); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and they informed the contact to call NHTSA to file a complaint. The failure mileage was 69,394.

The torque converter on this vehicle is a known issue to Ford, many Edges are affected by this issue. My vehicle will randomly surge and buck at low speeds as a result. Reduced power as well while going in reverse. There were never any warning signs, but the dealership said that it was a common issue on this vehicle. If I had not have been in warranty, the repair would have cost $6800. Just over six months later, the vehicle began doing the SAME thing. This time Ford says it’s the EGR valve and that it will cost a total of $1600. I managed to negotiate them down by talking to customer service, but I felt the need to bring this to others attention as I know my car isn’t the only one facing these issues.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. Additionally, the contact stated the vehicle had stalled and jerked intermittently while driving. There was no warning light illuminated. An unknown dealer was made aware of the failure and provided a fee for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not included in the unknown recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but no assistance was provided. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the safety failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.

Vehicle shuddering bucking and jerking at lower speeds. Shifting is erratic. Dealership diagnosis was a bad tourque converter. Apparently this is a know issue. See Ford TSB 21-2389. Had the vehicle in last month and they replaced the rear differential. Vehicle had less than 60k miles on it. Warrenty had expired while I was waiting for a service appointment (5 years or 60k) repair cost is over $3000

The first indication of a problem began when I felt a stutter shifting gears at low speeds. No check engine light or anything came on but it happened again so I took the car to a local dealer to be checked. He said my transmission was shot and quoted $8000.00 for replacement as the 60,000 mile warranty had passed. My car has 92000 miles on it. I couldn't believe this as I have had no other issues with this car so I drove to a second repair shop. During the 20 mile drive my car began stuttering at all speeds, I was surprised I made to the shop. Still no dash indicator lights or check engine lights , nothing. Quoted $4500.00 to rebuild transmission. I can't believe there is no dip stick for the owner to check transmission fluid levels/condition for regular maintenance. Who designed this?

Vehicle: 2020 Ford Edge VIN: [XXX] Component: Powertrain / Transmission Complaint (Updated): This is an update to a prior complaint regarding my 2020 Ford Edge transmission. The vehicle unexpectedly shifted into reverse while in drive and had difficulty accelerating properly. The dealership diagnosed a major transmission failure and quoted nearly $10,000 for repairs. Ford Customer Service has been contacted multiple times, and I also submitted a letter and an email, but I have not received any resolution. The vehicle is currently being held at the dealership, and I am unable to drive it. This issue poses a serious safety risk, and I believe it may be part of a wider defect affecting similar models. Please investigate further. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am reporting a serious issue with the transmission on my 2020 Ford Edge. The vehicle began shifting erratically and unexpectedly went into reverse while in drive, creating a dangerous situation. It also hesitates and lurches when accelerating. This issue occurred without warning and poses a major safety risk to myself, my passengers, and others on the road. I’m requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter to determine if there is a pattern of transmission failure in 2020 Ford Edge vehicles. My vehicle is currently at a dealership awaiting repair, and I am facing uncertainty and high costs without assurance this problem won’t reoccur.

At 58,000 miles we started having transmission slipping issues with no check engine lights or anything. We did some research and brought it in to a dealer for the recommended software update. That didn’t fully fix the issue and they recommended a new torque converter. At just under 60,000 it should not be having these issues and it’s a major expense for a newer car. Transmission failing is a safety issue since the car could stale without warning putting the driver or others safety at risk.

May 29, 2025

Car jerks when switching gears most of the time. Mostly noticed between 2nd & 3rd AND 3rd & 4th gears. If I am very gentle with the gas pedal, the jerk is very minor and sometimes unnoticeable. At constant speeds, the RPM spikes on its own without me hitting the gas pedal. To confirm this, I drove the car on the highway multiple times with cruise control set to 60 MPH. RPM will be slightly over 2x1000 for most of the time but periodically spikes 50-100 RPM over this constant mark.

This car doesn’t even have 100k on it and the transmission shutters really bad. No recall but this is very dangerous as it doesn’t allow you to accelerate when needed.

This is an update to incident [XXX] After failure of the torque converter I replaced the transmission in November 2023. Over time the symptoms of jerking and power issues came back. Had a transmission relearn completed. Issues came back again over time. Took vehicle to ford dealer (DORSCH) and diagnosed as TPS sensor failure. I did notice over winter that the issue was less in below 40 degrees weather. I assumed at that point it was electronic rather than a mechanical failure. Sensor is being replaced at this moment. I own a vehicle [XXX] ford edge, and ford service informed my transmission about to fail due to torque converter etc. which matches a recall in 2020 ford edge only limited to certain number of cars seems to be effected according to their program, however all information from service department matches to the issue other vin numbers experienced. I have asked them to include this vin number to effected cars in that recalls based on evidence for ford edge 2020 and they don’t take responsibility for it even though it matches to recall as a vehicle at 80.000 miles. I’m informed by ford, manufacturer may have used based on location a different part than original what is that even mean? I claim that my vehicle’s transmission is affected by their failure and following the path of failing even though not yet failed, but symptoms of there and happening. So following the path of how they explained in their recall list of cars’ fate with transmission. And my vehicle must be considered and added on that list to my best knowledge and safety concern as a moving vehicle that’s transmission can fail any minute while driving related to FORD’s technical, mechanical errors. There might be many 2020 ford edges out there driving with the same issues while occupied with passengers and driving on highway just waiting for their poor transmission to act up goofy to cause incident. I see this is a danger on traffic and reporting it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

When we first noticed symptoms we brought it to our local dealership. They diagnosed it with a faulty torque converter. The vehicle displays hesitation, jerkiness and stuttering when accelerating. It makes drive in poor conditions more challenging and daily driving when accelerating onto highways and interstates. Lane changes and other general maneuvers when accelerating. The condition was recreated by North Country ford in Coon Rapids, MN. We are continuing to get 2nd and 3rd opinions so that we can find a permanent solution. There has been no further inspections besides service shops and local the dealership. There were no service lamps or warning lights. The physical jerkiness and hesitation when accelerating was the main sign. Forums and automotive pages alerted us to many other drivers experiencing similar issues. The problem first arose around 1-2 months ago. Possibly the end of February to beginning of April 2025.

While our vehicle hasnt been in an accident yet, the issue could possibly lead into one. Our vehicle is having transmission problems. Ford knows there is an issue with the trans. I have called them an spoke to someone but i forget his name. The issue is the computer needs flashed and updated with new shifting points. At low speeds or if your barely on the gas, the trans bucks, sputters and has issues driving smooth. Our vehicle only has 85k miles on it, the issue started about 5k miles ago. I have asked the people of reddit on the issue. Many people responded saying they have gotten theres fixed or the trans goes out. Seems like its a very expensive (to me) fix and i feel as though that since it is a known issue that Ford should be the one paying to flash and update shift points on there products. Its bad enough we pay an avg of 600 a month for our vehicles. Now why cant they make it rite and fix a known issue. I dont know if you guys can help push the issue and see about getting this taken care of. All help is appreciated.

Rear Drive Unit/Differential has failed. This is the second time in 4 years that it has failed leading to drivetrain issues to the rear wheels. I'm not sure how significant an incident would be if the Rear Power Transfer Unit fails while drive at highway speeds. Ford has released Technical Service Bulletins for the problem, so they are aware that there is an ongoing issue. Yet is is the owners responsibility to make the repairs. I have attached a copy of the receipt from the first repair. The vehicle is currently at the same dealership for the same issue. This time, the dealer claims I need to replace the entire Rear Drive Unit at my expense.

Power Train has failed multiple times on this vehicle. It loses power on the highway, reverses when in drive, and does not shift down to make the vehicle slow to a safe speed. This puts me and others in danger because you can not predict that or when there will be a failure that hits a person or other car. This has been taken to a mechanic and confirmed as power train failure in a 4 year old, 100K mile car. Ford claims no recalls even though the same recall exists for other makes and models of the same kind with different VINS. Has thrown multiple codes.

2020 Ford Edge is Surging/Bucking/Jerking when you first take off at low speeds of 20mph or less. This ongoing issue could cause an accident to happen by the vehicle not getting to proper speeds as it should. Took my 2020 Ford Edge to my local Ford Dealer and they Updated the Software to the Transmission per TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 8F35 Transmission. At first it seemed better, but the Surging/Bucking/Jerking quickly came back. Transmission assembly lost ability to operate in reverse. This happened while attempting to reverse in a public area. I had enough turn radius to get around an obstruction and drive home. While driving home, the vehicle shuttered under acceleration. There were intermittent delays in acceleration also. The vehicle would not reverse out of driveway the next day. Reverse camera engaged, but no movement. The vehicle the illuminated a message of “SHIFT SYS FAULT. Service Required”. I had the vehicle towed to a repair facility for inspection. The Master ASE certified technician found that the fluid smelled burned, but there was not excessive metal shavings in fluid. He determined that the transmission had an internal failure and recommended replacement of transmission. This transmission has 123,000 miles on it. Transmission fluid was manually drained and filled at 119,500 with the manufacturer’s recommended “MOTORCRAFT MERCON ULV AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID #XT12QULV”. No warning lamps came on but while crossing after stopping at a stop sign the car was jerking and did not want to accelerate almost causing me to get hit by another car. This issue has been present since around 45k miles. I’m currently at 85k on odometer. This was the first time I realized how dangerous this can be. I followed all traffic laws and due to the sluggishness of acceleration due to the jerking I was nearly hit. I went to the dealership and they said it was the torque converter gone bad. The same issue that has been the cause of recall on almost every other model of the same year, the 2020 Ford Edge. This has been ongoing issue for Ford because my mother has a 2016 Ford Escape that was recalled for the torque converter. This is costing me a few thousand dollars to repair since they haven’t recalled my particular vin. This will be the reason I never buy a Ford again!!!!!

When accelerating the car hesitates or has jerking action from 10-30 MPH. When this happens I was almost rear ended a few times due to almost coming to a quick stop jerking action where the car is very slow accelerating from an intersection. I have done some research to find out that there are hundreds with the same issue with Ford Edge cars. This issue is getting more noticeable as the car gets older. Having problems with some dealerships getting the problem resolved or fixed. I was told to fill out your form with this information. Thank you for your time.

I was traveling at about 60 miles per hour when I attempted to accelerate slightly to stay with traffic. It seemed like the car wouldn't change gears, but the engine decreased in power. It did not seem that the vehicle had any "power". The car would not increase in speed. I noticed the "wrench" warning light, which corresponds to the drive train of the car. I was able to coast into the next small town about a half mile from the location where I first noticed the issue. Applying the breaks slowed the vehicle. I placed the vehicle in park. The car would not change out of this gear again. The vehicle's gas pedal did not produce any forward or backward momentum in drive or reverse. The vehicle is at the Ford Dealership for repair/inspection at this time. I can provide repair notes from the dealership. The vehicle could be made available for inspection upon request. If this drive train issue had happened on a busy highway, it may have been difficult to navigate off of the roadway safely without the ability to accelerate the car. If this issue had happened on an uphill road, the car would have lost speed rapidly, leading to a rear-end collision.

On [XXX] at [XXX] I was driving home from work as I turned on [XXX] road in Jackson CA I felt the vehicle pull and not want to pick up speed to drive up the road like it wanted to stall and only rolled forward a bit. The vehicle then picked back up and I made it to the stop light at the end of the road once I stopped for less than 1 minute the light turned green, I tried to go and the vehicle shut off and began to roll back I had to step on the break and the car behind me reversed so I would not hit him and then the screen flashed a turn vehicle off and restart engine I tried multiple times about 6. Cars had to go around me as I was the first at the light. I finally got the car to turn on and white smoke came out the exhaust pipes I couldn’t put the car in drive. I tried to re start the vehicle again and got it into drive and was able to pull on the side of the highway and more white smoke came out still no vehicle warning signs came on but the screen flashed dimly like it wanted to turn off again. I flagged down a fire truck and called 911 for help the fighters stated it seemed like my engine had blown out and the coolant was completely drained and may have gotten inside the engine causing the white smoke but to take it to a mechanic to verify. I had the vehicle towed to my home. On the way to work that night it drove fine with no issues or warnings, or pulling, I ran errands the day prior and no light warnings came on nor was my vehicle temperatures out of place. I even had my car serviced on [XXX] and had no issues I keep up on the maintenance I got the vehicle used from enterprise with a mileage of 52,559 on [XXX] the vehicle now has only 96,634 I’ve had the car for only a year and 4 months it should not have had an engine issue l have made a claim with my insurance hoping to get help, I’m calling enterprise for warranty information if there’s any and ford to see if there is any manufacturer warranties hoping to hear back this week. Leaving me with an extended warranty whom will not cover said repair also. $1800(+) out of pocket expense. Any insight on how one is too challenge this?

I purchased my 2020 Ford Edge in Dec 2021 with 8,000 miles at Covert Hutto. Looks like this car was being transferred to dealership after dealership. I feel that Ford should payoff my car and give me another car and take ownership of it being a bad production seed. It was built in Canada during the pandemic. I won’t feel safe because they took my transmission apart and how would I know if or whenever the torque converter is replaced it won’t damage quickly or something else goes wrong before my 60,000 mile’s warranty expires. Powertrain was the component that failed and/or malfunctioned. It’s at Covert Ford and is it available for inspection upon your request. I was in my driveway when the powertrain wrench light appeared on my dashboard. Yes the problem has been confirmed by Covert Ford service department. My vehicle was inspected by the License Transmission specialist at Covert Ford. There were no warning signs until I started my vehicle. I received a email alert and my FordPass app had an alert messages. There were no prior problem. The problem appeared on [XXX] and I towed it first thing on [XXX]. Severe jerking, hesitation and jerking when starting acceleration up to 35/40mph. Already had faulty EGR cooler replaced one month ago. Lost ALL coolant with no overheating signs on dash and coolant leaked into exhaust causing dense white smoke and horrible smell. This happened when only driving 5 houses down from my house.

The torque converter is failing and in one incident failed to provide power when accelerating. This created a safety risk as I was nearly rear ended when merging into a highway and lost the ability to accelerate. The torque converter has deteriorated and now caused the need to replace the transmission as well. I took the vehicle to a FORD dealer and they confirmed the torque converer has failed. They did not further inspect the transmission at that time. I have now taken it to an independant repair center and they inspected the transmission as well and found black transmission fluid due to metal shaving from the torque converter. This vehicle is 400 miles out of warranty and purchased as a certified pre owned from a ford dealer May 2023. Our mechanic has mentioned that this is a known issue for this vehicle. Up until this incedent there was no warning of any problems. I had noticed the car was shifting weird and shuddering slightly. When I discussed this with the local ford dealer, they explained that it was supposed to shift like that due to the type of transmission it had. Since then the car is barely drivable - scheduled for repair by my independent repair center 11/20.

I just had my car looked at by two different mechanics about rear differential. They told me those last the life of the car. So, they told me to look up recalls because that could be the issue. I only have 64000 miles on the car.

I have a 2020 Ford Edge SEL and out of nowhere on 09-08-2023 smoke was pouring out of the exhaust and the car was misfiring. I looked further into it and it seemed to be the coolant was leaking down into the cylinder and causing it to burn through the exhaust making it very difficult to breathe. I sat in the car at a drive through for a couple minutes and it was unbearable to breathe. The car is stalling out while accelerating and could be very dangerous depending on where it stalls.

Powertrain went out in 4 lane hallway, transmission and drive shaft. There was a power train light that went on a few days before. I made appt with Ford and had to be towed there for my appointment, was unable to make it there. the people at ford told me that they have had to fix this same thing on multiple/many vehicles. But mine was under recall. Why? 2fmpk3j95lba74164

Purchased 5-25-23 from Chevy dealer with 70,000 miles on odometer. When putting car in drive to about 35 mph the car jerks then it seems to run smoother at higher speeds. Is it some sort of adaptive transmission issue or could it be something else? How do I find out without spending an arm and a leg after putting a great investment in purchasing this vehicle already? Any advice?

Just bought this car not even a month ago. Drove less than 80 miles. After doing my actual behind the wheel test w highway patrol in the car (Missouri) I noticed the car shifting and jerking into gear as I'd accelerate from a stopped or parked position. No warning lights displayed at that time. Husband drove it this morning to work and did the same thing and now the wrench light is displayed. Being towed to the dealership on Monday since everything I've read says do not continue to drive.

Car would restart but continued to die and would not change gears. 3 occurred for several hours. Got car towed to dealer ship. The next day car started ok. Dealership conducted an adaptive transmission learning software reset for $224.00. Issue has not been inspected by any other entity. There were no warning signs or lamps illuminated during this issue.
