The contact owns a 2002 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormal sound and started drifting to the left. The vehicle was towed to the residence. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with a rusted subframe. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with the control arm needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had been serviced in 2014 under NHTSA campaign number: 14V165000 (Structure) however, the failure still occurred. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist and that he had to pay out of pocket for the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN HEARD A LOUD BANG WHEN HITTING A BUMP. STEERING BECAME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE BUT WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET OFF THE HIGHWAY AND TO A SHOP. UPON INSPECTION, THE SUB-FRAME ON THE PASSENGER SIDE HAD BROKEN AND WAS HANGING 6 INCHES LOWER THAN IT SHOULD. UPON CALLING FORD, I WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE HAD ALREADY BEEN SERVICED FOR THE RECALL FOR THE ROTTING, WITCH I QUESTIONED AND GOT NON ANSWERS AND WAS TOLD THEY COULD DO NOTHING FOR ME, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SUB-FRAME FOR THE EXACT ISSUE I AM CURRENTLY EXPERIANCING.

THE DEALER STATED THAT DUE TO THE MILEAGE AND AGE OF RECALL THE REPAIR WAS DECLINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF FAILURE. ON 12/20/2013 I HAD THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS REPLACED, AND HAD TO PAY 1,279.79. IN APRIL 2014 YOU ANNOUNCED A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ITEM. FOR SOME TREASON YOU EXCLUDED MY CAR. CONSIDERING MY CAR REQUIRED THE EXACT ITEM REPLACED ONLY 4 MONTHS PRIOR, I AM REQUESTING TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COST OF THAT REPAIR. ALSO A COMPLAINT I HAVE IS THE WARNING LIGHT FOR THE AIRBAG WILL NOT GO OUT. A DEFECT THAT DOES NOT SEEM REPAIRABLE. IN LIGHT OF THE AIRBAG RECALL I AM CONCERNED I AM SITTING IN FRONT OF A LOADED GUN. SUB FRAME/CRADLE RUSTED AND CAUSED A SEPARATION OF THE RIGHT FRONT AXEL AND STABILIZER. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, JUST AS WE WERE EXITING THE HIGHWAY. A LOUD THUD OCCURRED AND THE STEERING WHEEL SHIFTED MAKING DRIVING AND STEERING EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. THIS VEHICLE, ACCORDING TO FORD'S RECORDS, HAD A STRUCTURE RECALL FOR THE SAME ISSUE (14V165000) THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN REPAIRED AT A FORD DEALER FOR THE SAID RECALL A FEW YEARS AGO. FORD IS UNWILLING TO HELP PAY FOR THE CURRENT REPAIRS AS WE DID NOT TAKE IT TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR (WHICH WOULD HAVE REQUIRED TOWING AS THE CAR WAS BARELY DRIVABLE). WHEN I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE WHAT THEY DID WAS PUT A CROSSBAR ACROSS THE LOWER CONTROL ARM SUBFRAME INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE WHOLE LOWER CONTROL ARM SUBFRAME. THIS ACTION DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. I WOULD LIKE FOR THEM TO REPLACE THE LOWER CONTROL ARM.

THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE SUBFRAME REPLACEMENT.

ON JULY 18, 2015 AT APPROXIMATELY 1:30 PM I WAS DRIVING UP BEAR CREEK MOUNTAIN AND HEARD A LOUD POP THEN THE VEHICLE STARTED SLIDING BEFORE I FINALLY GOT IT TO STOP. I SLIDE ABOUT 50 FEET AND IF I'D SLIDE ABOUT 3 MORE FEET I WOULD HAVE BEEN OVER THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. THE SUB FRAME HAD SNAPPED IN TWO AND IT PULLED THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE OUT. THIS MADE THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE PUT ON A ROLL BACK AND TAKEN AWAY.ALSO DAMAGED WAS THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE AND ,MOLDING AROUND THE FENDER. IF I HAD BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE WITH THIS VEHICLE MY FAMILY WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED THE WRECK. IT IS LUCKY THAT WE DIDN'T GO OVER THE MOUNTAIN. I DID NOTHING TO CAUSE THE SUB FRAME TO BREAK AND I THINK FORD SHOULD BE HELD LIABLE. I SPOKE WITH THE FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS CENTER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO EXTENDED WARRANTY AND IT WAS NOT UNDER THE 2002 ESCAPE RECALL AND THAT THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NO FIRE OR LARGE CRASH THAT THEY COULD DO NOTHING ABOUT THE SUB FRAME BREAKING. MY INSURANCE CARRIER HAS ALSO CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND WAS TOLD THE SAME THING. I ASKED THE LADY AT FORD IF SOMEONE HAD DIED IN THE WRECK WOULD I STILL BE TOLD THE SAME THING AND SHE REPLIED YES. ACCORDING TO FORD THEY CAN'T GIVE OUT TELEPHONE NUMBERS TO LEGAL DEPARTMENT OR ADDRESSES OR EMAIL ADDRESSES. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I COULD NOT SPEAK TO A SUPERVISOR BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT TRANSFER CALLS. I WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE LADY I WAS SPEAKING TO BY ANOTHER LADY. GO FIGURE. I THINK THAT FORD IS LIABLE FOR THIS STRUCTURAL FAILURE AND NEEDS TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT.

WHILE DRIVING ON A RURAL CITY STREET AT 30 MPH I DECELERATED TO PREPARE TO TURN RIGHT. WHEN I BEGAN TO MAKE MY RIGHT HAND TURN I HEARD A LOUD POP AND THE CAR BEGAN TO RATTLE THE CAR CAME TO A STOP WITHIN 10 FEET OF THE POP. I APPLIED A SMALL AMOUNT OF POWER TO THE ENGINE TO TRY AND GET COMPLETELY OUT OF THE ROAD, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. UPON INSPECTION OF THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE IT WAS FACING 90 DEGREES IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE CAR, AND PUSHED TO THE BACK OF THE WHEEL WELL. THE CV SHAFT HAD COME COMPLETELY DETACHED FROM THE DRIVE SHAFT. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO A LOCAL SHOP THAT DID SUB-FRAME WORK. UPON INSPECTION AT THE AUTO BODY SHOP IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE HAD ALSO BECOME DETACHED DUE TO THE PROXIMITY TO THE EXHAUST FROM THE ENGINE HEATING IT UP CONSTANTLY. ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING PARTS NEEDING REPLACEMENT: RIGHT FRONT CV SHAFT, FRONT ENGINE CRADLE, FRONT CONTROL ARM BOLTS, CONTROL ARM BUSHING, CV DRIVE AXLE, HEAVY DUTY EXHAUST CLAMPS. THE SHOP HAD TO REMOVE AND REPLACE THE ENGINE CRADLE AND THE RIGHT FRONT SUB-FRAME. IF I HAD BEEN ON A HIGH SPEED INTERSTATE, AND THIS HAPPENED I WOULD HAVE PROBABLE FLIPPED, BECAUSE THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS UNABLE TO MOVE, AND WAS PULLING TOWARDS THE INSIDE OF THE CAR. BY DOING THAT MY WHEEL AXLE HAD COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE TRANSMISSION. HIS OPINION WAS THAT IF I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND THIS HAD HAPPENED IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR AUTO COLLISION AND MAYBE EVEN CAUSING MY ESCAPE TO ROLL OVER. I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE AND COMING TO A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION WHEN I HEARD A LOUD POPPING SOUND. UPON INSPECTION THE FOLLOWING MORNING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SUBFRAME ASSEMBLY HAD RUSTED OUT COMPLETELY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND HAD CAUSED THE LOWER CONTROL ARM TO BECOME LOOSE THUS BENDING IT AND MAKING IT UNUSABLE. I AM THANKFUL THAT THIS HAPPENED AT A VERY SLOW SPEED AND FEAR THAT IF OTHER FOLKS HAVE THIS HAPPEN AT HIGHWAY SPEED IT COULD BE A VERY BAD OUTCOME ! THIS ALLOWED MY PASSENGER SIDE TIRE TO PULL OUTWARD HENCE PULLING THE CONTROL ARM LOOSE. IT WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX AND THE WARRANTY I HAD PURCHASED AT THE TIME OF BUYING THE VEHICLE WAS NO AVAIL. I CONTACTED FORD AND WAS TOLD THAT IF THERE IS NO RECALL THEN THERE IS NO PROBLEM !! SORRY BUT IT WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX AND I BELIEVE FORD SHOULD MAKE GOOD ON THIS. ALSO, THE CAR HAS STALLED TWICE. THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE AND NEEDS A THIRD REPLACEMENT. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REPLACED. THE AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY AND REMAINS ON FOR MONTHS AT A TIME; STARTED IN 2004. FREQUENCY OF THE CLICKING SOUND IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO VEHICLE SPEED (THE SLOWER THE SPEED, THE LONGER THE TIME BETWEEN EACH SUCESSIVE CLICK). THE SOUND OCCURS WITH EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT TURNS, BUT IS MUCH MORE NOTICABLE WHILE TURNING LEFT. THIS CLICKING IS NOT A HEALTHY SOUND AND I AM WORRIED ABOUT A FAILURE OF THE AFFECTED PARTS.*AK

MY 2002 FORD ESCAPE WAS LESS THAN TWO MONTHS OLD AND HAD LESS THAN 1000 MILES WHEN I RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. I HEAR A LOUD CONTINUOUS CLICKING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. FORD HAS ISSUED A SPECIAL SERVICE MESSAGE (#16016) DESCRIBING THIS PROBLEM WITH 2001-2002 ESCAPES. THEY HAVE NO SOLUTION AND DEALER WILL NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR CAR. I AM CONCERNED FOR MY DAUGHTER AND MY SAFETY WHEN DRIVING THE CAR. FORD NEEDS A RECALL TO REPAIR THESE CARS.*AK
