I was heading back to Louisville Ky from bowling green Ky when my suv started to slow down and started running rough and check engine light flashed then stayed on I pulled off the road called aaa to have the suv towed back to bowling green to where I could have it checked the next day when I went to start it it was knocking and smoking and wouldn’t take gas. Talked to a local shop and was informed that my motor was blown after he came and looked at it.
The contact owns a 2005 Ford Escape. The contact stated while his son was driving 30 MPH, the vehicle turned off inadvertently. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact's son shifted into neutral(N) and veered to the side of the road. The contact's son was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts. The contact's son then drove to his residence. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

I HAVE A 2005 ESCAPE I BOUGHT FOR MY 19YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. THE CAR KEEPS STALLING OUT PUTTING HER AT RISK DRIVING TO AND FROM WORK. WE CHANGED THE GAS FILTER AND MAKE SURE THE FLUIDS ARE CHECKED ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE HELPED. THE CAR KEEPS STALLING OUT. SHE WILL BE DRIVING AND IT JUST CUTS OFF. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND RESUMED DRIVING, BUT WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE WARNING LIGHTS FLASHED ON/OFF AGAIN AND THE CAR LOST POWER AND DIED AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES WITHIN AN 30 MINUTES AS I DROVE TO THE FORD SERVICE CENTER. ON THE 3RD TIME THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND BEGAN TO MOVE BACK AND FORTH, AND STARTED TO LOSE POWER. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND I BEGAN TO TURN THE VEHICLE IT AGAIN LOST POWER. AFTER THE 1ST POWER LOSS I HEADED TO THE FORD SERVICE CENTER WHICH WAS LOCATED 5 MILES AWAY. THE VEHICLE DIED 3 TIMES BEFORE I REACHED THE SERVICE CENTER. THE SERVICE CENTER DETERMINED THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY.

THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR 2 WEEKS WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT PCM; DEALER STATED THERE WAS A SHORTAGE OF PCM AVAILABILITY DUE TO AN EXTREMELY HIGH NATIONWIDE DEMAND FOR THE PART. DEALER REPLACED THE PCM, AS WELL AS ALL COILS AND SPARK PLUGS IN MID MARCH 2014; THE TOTAL COST OF WAS, $2,875.70. THE PCM, COILS AND PLUGS HAD ALSO BEEN REPLACED IN 1/2009 FOR THE SAME FAILURES. COILS AND PLUGS WERE ALSO REPLACED AN ADDITIONAL 2 MORE TIMES BETWEEN 2009-2014. WHEN THE PCM FAILS, THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY LOOSES ALL POWER, STEERING AND BRAKES, AND STOPS DEAD IN ITS TRACKS AND CANNOT BE RESTARTED CAUSING A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC SITUATION. I HAD PURCHASED A USED ESCAPE, IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, IN AUG 2014. I BOUGHT FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, A FAMILY MEMBER, WITH ONLY 55K MILEAGE OVER THEIR 10 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP (THEY WERE UPGRADING). I DROVE THE CAR AN ADDITIONAL 1,500 MILES HERE (TO 56K, TOTAL) OVER MY FIRST TWO MONTHS OF OWNERSHIP, AND THE CAR HAD PASSED ALL ITS REGULAR ANNUAL INSPECTIONS. SUDDENLY ONE NIGHT ON THE ROAD THE CAR'S ENGINE BEGAN CHUGGING WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO TRAVEL BEYOND 45MPH, AND A BLINKING YELLOW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. UPON RESTARTING THAT INDICATOR DID NOT COME BACK ON, BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL SLUGGISH AND SO I ATTEMPTED TO COAST HOME AT MANAGED SPEEDS (AS I WAS ONLY A MILE AWAY) TO HAVE A MECHANIC CHECK IT OUT DURING BUSINESS HOURS. I DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT HOME. THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON FULL AND I SOON LOST POWER COMPLETELY, WITH BARELY ENOUGH NOTICE TO PULL OFF THE 6 LANE HIGHWAY. THE SUDDEN POWER LOSS SEEMED VERY UNSAFE AS I HAD TO STEER MANUALLY WITH NO POWER STEERING NOR ACCELERATION. AFTER THE CAR STALLED OUT IT WOULD NOT EVEN RESTART FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. I TOWED IT TO A MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY AND THEY READ ME A LONG LIST OF ERROR CODES THAT HAD BEEN IDENTIFIED, ALL OF WHICH WENT BACK TO THE POWER CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FAILURE, APPARENTLY, AS DESCRIBED IN TSB 10-18-10. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY TWO DIFFERENT MECHANICS, INCLUDING MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP, THAT IT WOULD COST AT LEAST $2,000 TO SERVICE THE PCM AND REPLACE ALL AFFECTED SPARK PLUGS, COILS AND CYLINDERS. DESPITE THE VERY LOW MILEAGE BELOW THE 80K PCM WARRANTY, THE VEHICLE REACTED RATHER SPORADICALLY AND UNPREDICTABLY AND IT CREATED AN UNSAFE CONDITION. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE BEEN INFORMED SOONER OF THIS KNOWN ISSUE. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL NOTICE SINCE THE PCM IS KNOWN TO CAUSE A HAZARD. THIS IS BEING RESUBMITTED, SINCE I BELIEVE THE REEVALUATION OF THE 09 AND NEWER FORD ESCAPES IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN OCCURRING WITH THE EARLIER YEAR FORD ESCAPES, BUT HAS NOT RECEIVED REVIEW. A DEFECTIVE PCM WHICH CAUSES COMPLETE AUTO SHUTDOWN, BURNING OUT THE COILS, ETC. HAS DOCUMENTED COMPLAINTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET IN CAR COMPLAINT AND BUYING SITES FOR THIS VEHICLE. THE PCM IS DEFECTIVE ON THE ESCAPE AND WHEN IT STOPS FUNCTIONING ALL POWER IS LOST, AND THIS OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING LEAVING ONE WITHOUT BRAKES, POWER STEERING, ETC. THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH FORD AND YET FORD REFUSES TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AND THE BILL IS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF $2500-3000 TO BE SHOULDERED BY THE CUSTOMER. MALFUNCTION, HOWEVER, HAS MORE OMINOUS SEQUELAE THAN MONETARY COST, IN THAT IT MAY COST LIVES FROM CRASHES. I HAVE A RANDOM INCIDENT WITH MY FORD ESCAPE 2005, WHERE AT TIMES WHEN ON CRUISE CONTROL, THE ENGINE WILL ACCELERATE UNEXPECTEDLY. AFTER MANY YEARS OF DRIVING, AND ATTEMPTING TO FILE A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE ISSUE WITH FORD BUT REFUSED AS IT WASN'T REPRODUCIBLE WHEN ALLOTTED, I THINK THIS ISSUE OCCURS BECAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS SELF ADJUSTED ITSELF WHEN TOWING A TRAILER. BUT AFTER DETACHING THE TRAILER AND TAKING THE TRUCK FOR A LONG HILLY RIDE, THE ENGINE COMPUTER MAY THINK IT'S STILL TOWING A TRAILER AND STRONGLY ACCELERATE THE ENGINE WHEN GOING UPHILL WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON. THIS IS ONLY BASED ON WHAT I HAVE EXPERIENCE, AND INCLUDE NO COMPUTER LOG EXAMINATION. NOT THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN IF A POLICE CAR IS AROUND, AND BEING A SAFE DRIVER. AFTER LUCKILY JUST EXITING INTERSTATE 70, BUT ENTERING HIGHWAY 40 MY VEHICLE COMPLETELY DIED WITH ALL ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS INOPERATIVE (OBVIOUSLY INCLUDING POWER BRAKES, STEERING, ETC). THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING OF A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ETC. AT THE DEALERSHIP I WAS INFORMED THAT AN "ELECTRICAL ENGINE MODULE" HAD BURNED OUT WHICH ALSO COMPLETELY FRIED ALL THE ENGINE COILS. (A COMPLETE ELECTRICAL TUNE-UP,ETC. HAD BEEN PERFORMED ABOUT A YEAR EARLIER). I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE DIAGNOSIS WAS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF A FORD INTERNAL MEMO INDICATING WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF THE MODULE MALFUNCTIONED. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT I HAD JUST EXITED AN INTERSTATE, BUT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN DISASTROUS AND IT SEEMS THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS PROBLEM. I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WILL COST $2700 TO REPLACE THE COMPUTER THAT WAS SHORTED OUT DUE TO THE COILS GOING BAD - I HAD THE COILS CHANGED TWO TIMES SINCE 2007 FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FORD SRB 09.2.6 AND TSB 09-2-6 IGNITION COIL PROBLEM THAT SO MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING WITH THIS CAR - THE CAR STALLS ALWAYS WHEN DRIVING 50 OR MORE ON A MAIN ROAD OR HIGHWAY AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO ALL OF A SUDDEN LOSE POWER ON A HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEEDS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO EVEN MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL TO GLIDE YOUR CAR SAFELY TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD DUE TO THE STEERING LOCKING UP BECAUSE THE CAR DIES TOTALLY. THE COMPUTER CODES THAT SHOW UP ARE P0351 -P0354 AND SOME OTHER ONES THAT I DIDN'T WRITE DOWN WHEN I WAS TALKING TO THE THOMPSONS MECHANIC. I CANT BELIEVE THAT THIS YEAR AND MODEL WASN'T RECALLED - ACCORDING TO THOMPSONS, THERE IS A BACK ORDER FOR THE COMPUTER MODULE FOR THIS CAR, TWO WEEKS MINIMUM DUE TO SO MANY ESCAPES 2005 NEEDING THIS SAME COMPUTER BECAUSE IT WAS SHORTED OUT PREMATURELY AND UNSAFELY. IT NEVER HAPPENS WHEN YOU DRIVE LESS THAN 50 SO THIS IS STRANGE AND VERY DANGEROUS.I WOULD LIKE FORD TO REPAY US THE DAMAGES AND COSTS THAT US CUSTOMERS, HAVE DISHED OUT RECURRING EVERY 2-3 YEARS. WAS ON AN ACCESS ROAD ONTO INTERSTATE 4 IN TAMPA, CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND I WAS ABLE TO BARELY STEER IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SINCE IT WAS A LARGE OVERPASS I HAD MORE THAN TYPICAL ROOM TO GET THE CAR STOPPED. LATER I WAS TOLD BY THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT COILS WERE DAMAGED AND PCM COMPUTER WENT OUT. I CHECKED CARCOMPLAINTS.COM AND I FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FOR THIS SAME ISSUE WITH COST TO FIX IT FROM $1300 TO $2700. EVIDENTLY FORD IS AWARE OF THIS TOTAL ENGINE SHUT DOWN PROBLEM THAT IS CAUSED BY A COMPUTER FAILURE. IN MOST CASES PEOPLE ARE DRIVING THE CAR AND IT COMPLETELY STALLS WITH LITTLE OR NO WARNING AND MINIMAL MANEUVERABILITY. I WAS FORTUNATE IT HAPPENED ON THE OVERPASS AND NOT ON THE BUSY INTERSTATE. *JS

WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, I WENT TO ACCELERATE. UPON REACHING 40. I HEARD A SUBSTANTIAL BACKFIRE NOISE, AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY ROAD CAUSING ME TO BLOCK TRAFFIC AS I COASTED ALMOST INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION. I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND RESTART THE ENGINE AFTER COASTING FOR 100+ FEET. AFTER WHICH, THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND RUGGED NEVER BEING ABLE TO ACCELERATE ABOUT 30 MPH AND CAUSING MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEMS. I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP (VARSITY FORD IN ANN ARBOR, MI) AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE WAS IN TROUBLE. APPARENTLY, MY SPARK PLUG AFTER BEING CLOGGED, CAUSED A BACKFIRE WHICH BLEW MY IGNITION COILS AND SPARKPLUGS AND MY PCM. I AM BEING QUOTED $2,200. AT MY LAST OIL CHANGE (3 MONTHS AGO) VARSITY FORD TOLD ME I WAS GETTING CLOSE TO NEEDING A TUNE UP BUT IT WAS NOT NECESSARY THAT DAY AND THAT I COULD WAIT UNTIL MY NEXT OIL CHANGE. I WAS PLANNING ON GOING THIS WEEKEND BECAUSE I WAS HEADING OUT OF TOWN. HAD I BEEN TOLD THE RISK WAS A $400 TUNE UP VS. A $2,200 BLOWN ENGINE, MAYBE I WOULD HAVE CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS. WHILE DRIVING ON THE EXPRESSWAY, MY GAS PEDAL SNAPPED FORWARD BY ITSELF AND ACCELERATED MY CAR. THEN SNAPPED BACK AND HIT MY FOOT IN THE POSITION IT WAS ALREADY IN. THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE, SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF MY OWNERSHIP OF THIS CAR. I SAW ON FOX NEWS THAT THERE IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION; AND CALLED FORD TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPAIR MY CAR AND THEY SAID NO. WE WERE ACCELERATING TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY DIED WITHOUT WARNING. NO TELLING WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF WE WERE DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. WE COASTED TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER WHO STATED THE COMPUTER (PCM), ALL THE COIL OVER PLUGS (COP) AND SPARK PLUGS WERE DAMAGED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE AS IT IS DESCRIBED EXACTLY IN FORD SERVICE BULLETIN TSB 09-2-6. THE SPARK PLUGS IN THE 2005 AND 2006 CAUSE RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE WITH THE PCM WHICH DAMAGES THE PCM AND THE OTHER COMPONENTS. THE LEAST FORD COULD HAVE DONE WAS NOTIFY US THAT REPLACING THE SPARK PLUGS COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. THE PROBLEMS DON'T END THERE. A FEW DAYS AFTER THE REPAIR WE WERE AGAIN ACCELERATING TO GET ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 50MPH. WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE FORD DEALER WHO STATED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (THERE ARE 3 OF THEM) WERE CLOGGED DUE TO RAW FUEL COMING IN CONTACT WITH THE CONVERTERS PROBABLY DUE TO THE PREVIOUS ENGINE PROBLEMS. THE COST TO FIX THE CONVERTERS IS EVEN MORE THAN THE COST OF THE INITIAL REPAIR. WE'VE DECIDED TO NOT HAVE THE DEALER REPAIR THE VEHICLE AS THE TOTAL COST OF ALL THE REPAIRS WOULD EXCEED THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. WE CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WERE OF NO HELP IN THIS SITUATION. I THINK FORD SHOULD COVER THE COSTS OF THESE REPAIRS FOR AN ISSUE KNEW EXISTED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM AS I SEE THAT IT HAS HAPPENED TO A LOT OF OTHER 2005 ESCAPES LISTED IN YOUR DATABASE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED AND NONE OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART; HOWEVER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THE IGNITION COIL WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE MORE TIMES AND EACH TIME THE COILS WERE REPLACED. THE PCM MODULE WAS ALSO REPLACED TWICE.
