Steering wheel locked up hard to turn wheel Consuming(burning) way more gas than normally would
On June 24, 2025 at approx 4:45 pm, my wife and I were driving home. The car was running fine, no lights, gauges were normal, no info on screen, when all of a sudden the engine shut down, info on screen stated steering assisi unavailable, and smoke started coming from vents. We were aproaching a sharp curve in the road, so I had to manhandle the steering to keep from crashing. Then used the emergency brake to stop after insuring we cleared the curve. By that time, we were unable to see anything for all the smoke inside the car. Nothing would work so we could not roll the electric windows down. When stopped, we opened the doors and jumped out. Then I heard the engine compartment crackling due to a fire. Luckily, we escaped with no injuries except for smoke inhalation. I have been driving for over 58 years and doing mechanical repairs for over 60 years. I have never experienced anything like this. We bought this car new and I have maintained it in 'like new' condition since. Now it is completely destroyed. I also know Ford has had recalls on this vehicle and we have taken care of all these except the one on the shifter linkage bushing. I am very concerned something went very wrong with this car and others may, too. Plus, I am a dedicated Ford owner and may be concerned on replacing with something else after this terrifying incident.
I just purchased this 2013 Escape with roughly 133,000 miles on it. The Car Fax showed the open recalls (latches and bushing) but that was it. Had the recalls done. Car immediately had issues with actuator and heater core. I tried to return the car and local dealer refused. Had heater core replaced for second time, after engine overheated due to coolant leak. Fuel sensor also had to be replaced due to fuel leak. Days after these repairs were done, car began leaking coolant again while driving, overheated and shut down.
Engine randomly stalls when pulling out into traffic. This has happened on at least 10 occasions in the last year, and 3 or 4 of those were extremely dangerous situations. Many parts have been replaced, but nothing has solved the problem. There are no codes or check engine lights, and since it only happens randomly, the service centers have not been able to reproduce the problem. There is no advance warning when this is going to happen. There are tons of similar reports that can be easily found with a google search of "2013 Ford Escape 1.6 stalling", but none have a clear fix. 1000's of these cars are on the road, and are ticking time bombs just waiting to cause an accident.
I bought the vehicle and February of 2020 and didn’t even have it for 6 months before it needed major repairs. In any other state, lemon laws would have applied and I wouldn’t be driving a dangerous vehicle. This model should not be on the market anymore, period. There have been countless failures: the transmission has been changed 3 times in less than 3 years, the purge valve has been changed twice and is going bad again, which has caused more problem for the engine cooling system. A coolant hose EXPLODED just yesterday, which I had changed not even 3 months ago. The electrical system has been “fixed” by countless mechanics, including Ford, and continues to malfunction and I assume is showing incorrect codes or not showing them at all, as there was NO ENGINE HEATING ICON that appeared prior to the hose exploding, as would normally be expected. Every problem I have just described is a recall that Ford has acknowledged on my same year, model and even manufacturing date, but they not only claim it’s not their responsibility, but they have bullied me any time I attempt to bring this up. As I stated, this car should never have been allowed to be sold. It began to dangerously malfunction less than a year after buying it. This included the overheating issues I described above, and major drivability issues that have caused the car to lose power and or acceleration while driving at highway speeds. As also stated, the coolant system is extremely flawed leading to a hose exploding, which tells me an engine fire would not have been far behind had we not been close to home. I have tried every measure possible to address all parties accountable. The dealership that sold the vehicle, the warranty company that did repairs that didn’t need to be done, the repair shops that did the repairs and did further damage to my car that still hasn’t been repaired, and the Ford dealerships themselves. I have on record multiple parties saying they don’t know how to fix the vehicle.
On Tuesday July 30,2024 I started to notice the smell of gasoline inside my car, did not drive for 2 days, then on August 3rd the fumes were so strong they were making me sick. Parked car and called dealership Monday morning July 5. Not able to take me in until August 15, 2024. There were no warning lights on dashboard just the smell of gasoline, This problem could start a fire under the hood, hope to get it to dealership and they can resolve the problem.0
Constant coolant leak and not sure where the coolant is going. Have replaced the reservior, valve cover gasket, cylinder head and valves, coolant level bottle sensor, coolant thermostat, and engine coolant temperature sensor. Check engine light is still on and Coolant is still leaking and engine overheating. Can't find where the leakage is and there is no visible evidence on the floor of the garage. Losing coolant obvious because the level is low ever 2-3 days of highway driving. Car will shut down because of the overheating. Mechanic doesn't know what else to do. Car was purchased on June 4, 2024. Have not received the title or license plates. Tried to return it to the company who sold it to me; however, owner of the company refused to refund my money.
I own a 2013 Ford escape SEL, and I have had a continuous coolant leak for over a year now. Codes from computer reading have come back as spark plugs and cylinders misfiring. I have taken it to a licensed repair shop. They have informed me that they could not find a coolant leak within the cooling and radiator system. However, after personal research and additional information from, my mechanic, I have come to realize that other issues within the Ford escape 2013 1.6 L eco-boost engine, our part of the problem. In my opinion, the Ford Motor Company has neglected to acknowledge, or repair the issues with this engine and what’s causing the vehicle to lose coolant, then causing other engine problems. It has put me in unsafe situations as acceleration and or overall performance is putting people at risk.
Always adding coolant, shook on start up, white smoke, eventually completely died which was inspected and had multiple repairs; reconditioned cylinder head, replaced water pump, thermostat and housing, timing belt, headset and head bolts, replace oil filter, fill oil and anti freeze, new battery. Total cost to fix was $3,367.98. The car is available for inspection upon request. Now after paying for all of those repairs, I am once again having the same problem with the car 1.5 years later. There have been no warning lamps either and it’s been going on for over a year and has been serviced for the same reason in the past. There are many other happenings that have happened revolving around failure of the engine system that have significantly affected the safety of myself and others, most recently extreme exhaust that was emitting a gas and burn type smell and the car was shaking heavily at idle.

This Car has had non-stop coolant problems for years.Constantly looses coolant and low coolant light comes on and have to refill.I replaced coolant bypass valve 7/8/21,and again on 3/22/23.Its ok awhile then starts loosing coolant again.Few days ago low coolant light came on after refilling it just a week ago.This time the engine light came on code p1299,with a message to pull over because my car was overheating and it didn't have any power.
Losing coolant, engine light came on now vehicle lost exceleration.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Coolant system is experiencing major leak at the coolant stand pipe. Also vehicle is reading a protection code and vehicle appears to be overheating but it's not. Coolant leak is seeping onto the belts and hoses that were also replaced. Engine seals have also leaked and have been recently replaced several times. Vehicle is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Safety recall 13S12 with a risk of localized overheating of the engine cylinder head that may lead to oil leaks and fires was not completed per the procedure provided by FORD motor company. The dealership that was responsible for completing the recall located at 488 U.S 1 Highway in Vero Beach Florida in 2019 is no longer operating. Several components of the 64 page recall were not completed as verified by a copy of the work order I have in my possession. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, my ford service advisor in Thomasville, GA has verified that this recall was not done properly and that my car falls under the manufacturer year that was negatively effected by this common problem with all cars produced within the same specific time frame by the manufacturer (FORD). The loss of coolant and potential overheating of the engine is a major common issue with this vehicle make/year/model. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, check engine light is currently on and a protection code for the engine overheating has displayed on dash board for several months however my service advisor has advised me to contact ford motor company. Ford has told me to file a complaint with your division. Battery also drains repeatedly.
I HAVE A 2013 Ford Escape THAT HAS HAD TO HAVE A NEW TRANSMISSION DUE TO ITS SUDDEN AND UNEXPECTED AND WITH NO WARNING FAILURE. 6000 AT FORD DEALERSHIP. THEN THE PROBLEMS WITH COOLANT STARTED. IT WOULD SUDDENLY START OVERHEATING, AND START STALLING . DROPPED DOWN TO TWO MILE AND HOUR TILL YOU LIMP OFF THE ROAD. HAVE TO CONSTANTLY CHECK IT. WILL BE FINE AND THEN SUDDENLY START LEAKING AGAIN. REPLACED COOLANT CAP, COOLANT OVERFLOW TANK, NEW HOSE FOR COOLANT TANK, COOLANT HOSE THAT INSERTS INTO REAR OF ENGINE, STAND PIPE AND BYPASS VALVE.
From the day I bought the vehicle, it had coolant leak issues. I read that Ford knew this so they installed a feature where the vehicle will shut down/not move if there is low coolant, so as to avoid fires. An abrupt stop is very dangerous as well depending on location. $1000s later and years later, the leaks turned into not being able to hold any coolant at all. I took it to FORD they kept for 6 months and when I got the car back, it no longer drove. I took to another shop and they said there is a class action lawsuit for the issue and that the turbo needs to be replaced. That would almost $5k in repairs… due to labor costs. I loved this car even thought it’s been problematic. I would love nothing more than to have it working again, but not for that price.
The Turbocharger Wastegate Regulating Valve Solenoid has been intermittently forcing a OBD2 code P0234. The solenoid location has not been determined and why the code goes away and then comes back later after driving the vehicle after clearing the code is not determined either. Ford charges more for this part than any other parts houses. The dealer labor is also costing just as much as the part ($200). This is a problem that is currently happening to quite a few Escape owners.
While getting gas the other day , when I put the fuel in my car the nozzle into the gas tank a hissing sound came out of it out of the gas tank and it smelled like gas really bad, then I ran a code thing on my car said can't un able to bleed up fuel tank , I don't know why then after I got the gas when pulling the nozzle out it did it again , then my car would not start ,
First: A steering assist fault "service vehicle" started to appear on my dashboard of my 2013 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0 L . Steering is very hard and will not turn when in park and ready to drive, i can change gears, but steering is locked. I turn the ignition (push button) off, then it unlocks. I thought it was because I was putting in gear too quick after starting, but it does it even when I wait a couple of seconds to engage the gears. I don't want to encounter this problem while driving for obvious reasons. I have not confirmed it with a dealer since it doesn't do it all the time. Problem has not been inspected by anyone yet, but I've seen other posts of the expensive costs to repair. No other warning lamps of messages and this started a week ago (o/a 1 Oct 23). Second: I am getting very poor fuel consumption (about 17-18 MPG). A check with my FIXD device confirmed what I thought was the problem - "Fuel Pressure Sensor 'B' Circuit Low and Low Pressure Fuel System Pressure Too High". I don't see any safety concerns other than I might be left stranded in the desert one day. Dealer tell me that if I see no warning lamps on my dashboard, I shouldn't worry too much (hello?). I now have 115,800 miles on this vehicle.
My 2013 has developed a gas leak. It is a small leak and shooting gasoline in the engine. It looks like there was a recall on some vehicles in this make/model and year but mine did not qualify. The recall number is 13S12. I would like for it to be included since it is a known issue in other vehicles in that same time frame. My car is not safe to drive as the gasoline in the hot engine could catch on fire.
There is a defective fuel line that is rapidly leaking fuel and is a fire hazard. I found out that this part was recalled leading up to July 2012. My vehicle vas built in August of 2012 and it is the exact same part. The recall on the earlier models is 12S35. It's the exact part and issue in the later models, yet hasn't been recalled
Fire started in engine from oil leak in cylinder head on Saturday, 9/9/23 at approximately 1:15 pm. Car had been running for around 2 hours with no signs or indication of malfunction. Driver pulled car over after entering Mt. Rainier National Forest at a viewpoint. At this point driver noticed engine was smoking. NO lights or indicators on dashboard lit up notifying of overheating or malfunction. The temperature gauge did not indicate the engine was over heating. The safety of 4 passengers was at risk. Fire started with four passengers including the driver in the car. Vehicle was located in Mt. Rainier National Forest where passengers and driver had no cellphone service. This also occurred in a National Forest during the high risk season for forest fires/wildfires. Fire could have put lives of passengers at risk as well as those in nearby area, if car went ablaze in the forest. With no service, preventing the car fire from turning into a forest fire would be very difficult. This problem occurred AFTER TSB on this vehicle was completed for safety recall 17S09-S1 in April 2014 at Bellingham Ford. The crack in the cylinder caused by the recall was patched by Bellingham Ford by filling it with Copper silicone rather than removing the cylinder and replacing it. Repair shop (Mike's Shop - Buckley Washington) that inspected vehicle after incident on Sept. 9th 2023, found that copper silicone patch had split causing oil to leak into engine and catch fire. This inspection indicates that the initial repair done by Ford Manufacturer did not prevent leak from occurring and causing a fire to start in engine.
The smell of gas is overwhelming. It reeks of gas and there was a recall on the 2013 Ford Escape for this reason, yet this vehicle isn’t associated with the recall. No mechanic will look at it due to the strong emission of gas.
This is the 1.6l engine it has a main fuel line problem in the engine area that is leaking fuel. I see recall but FORD says my car not affected in recall. See below Ford is recalling certain model year 2013 Escape vehicles manufactured from October 5, 2011, through July 11, 2012, and equipped with a 1.6L engine. These vehicles have an engine compartment fuel line which may split, resulting in a leak. This car constantly stops in mid traffic. I have taken it everywhere and they can’t seem to find anything wrong. I’ve call ford a hundred times and nothing.
Praise God no incident at this time. But I've had a Ford mechanic look at the codes my Escape is giving, has seen how it drives and told me the CVP is stuck. This is the exact same issue as for the Fuel Tank Deformation recall Ford currently has out. Because I could not afford the repair I'm driving on a wing and a prayer. But now I see that my vehicle should be included in that recall and doing what I can to make that known and heard.
In 2019 Ford replaced my "entire fuel line" due to a recall. Yesterday I found out why my car started to smell like gas, there's a pinhole size leak in my fuel line. Mechanic said it's not rubbing on anything and it's protected by the undercover piece and there would be no way for flying debri or anything to damage it. How did the recalled fuel line last longer than the replacement fuel line?!
Well I went to start my car after getting gas and it would not start after a few mins it started , but it was trying to lunge forward even though it was in park , after I finally got it going went home and the whole time I smelled gas in my car ? Then I pulled in my driveway and the check engine light was on , had my brother in law do a digital scan on my car and it had PO456 evaporated emissions leak, I don't understand why , I'm scared to drive it now because I don't want to have the cab fill up with gas smell in my car and it's bad for me and my kids
I had a fuel line recall on my vehicle a few years ago but didn't get the notice until my car almost caught fire. The recall melted some coolant components that were replaced free of charge when they replaced the "entire fuel line". Now my car has constant coolant problems, heat and air problems, and suddenly (just started yesterday) it smells of raw gasoline in the cabin of the car and some on the outside of the car near the front. No visible leaks can be seen under the car(coolant or gas). Please help.
The coolant system is plugged somewhere causing it to not drain properly into all components and me having to fill my coolant tank every other week.
While accelerating the car repeatedly hesitates, but keeps on going. It is like a hiccup, never stopping. Called the dealer he wanted to charge me for a diagnosis and could not promise me that my care would be serviced in a timely manner. (this was not the dealer I purchased the car from)It was one closer to my home. I have a warranty from the Purchasing Dealer. I purchased the car on 8/2/2022.
The fuel line caught fire while driving under normal load. There is no active recall on this model any longer, but had one years ago for same issue. This vehicle has 89k miles, serviced regularly, and fire
I noticed the smell of gas when I parked one night. The next day after I drove it the smell of gas was very strong. I stopped the car and checked under the hood. The fuel line that connected to the fuel rail was leaking gas onto the engine. I consider myself lucky that it did not catch on fire. Ford did a recall for this years ago from what I have learned from the internet, but for some reason mine was not recalled. I have ordered the new fuel line and waiting for it to arrive. I have removed the leaking fuel line and have it if you would like to examine it.
On 06/21/2022 I took my 2013 Ford Escape to a Ford dealer because my check engine light was on. I was informed that a Evap Tube was needed and the part was ordered. A few weeks later I checked with the dealer and was told the part was on back order. 08/01 I checked again and was told that there were 3,000 people waiting for the part and there was no estimate on when it would arrive. Whenever I start the engine after getting gas the engine does not start right away. It takes several times to start. I am always worried that the engine will not start or there could be a fire.
I purchased my 2013 ford escape vehical in febuary 2022 from a local transmission shop, so iv've had it for a good 7 months and its has been nothing but problem after problem with this vehical, the first issue i noticed was the brake fluid leak and i was having to coonstatly refil it until i was able to pay someone to repair it for me. Also My coolant is needing to be filled up about every 2 weeks, and i have to constantly check it just to be sure because sometimes the light wont even pop up. The most recent issue that im having is a huge fuel leak, it just started about 4 days ago and its spraying out of a metal fule line by the engine, after doing some research its a recall for the year and make of my vehical, i called ford in to get information on what i could do and they bassicallly said they wouldnt repair it since my vin number is not linked with that specific recal. I'm a single mother of a 2 year old and this is my only source of transportation, i do not have the funds to repair this and i do believe alot of the issues are recalls and should be fixed and covered by ford.
My car just cut off while I was driving. The car cranks but do not start. I’ve been told it the fuel pump and I just got this car a year ago and barely drive it. It’s dangerous that it just cut off while I was driving in the middle of the street and could’ve caused a bad accident
While merging onto the highway, I got into the right lane. While in motion my car stalled and went from 70 mph to 40 mph almost instantly. There have been many other times of engine stalling that has made me fear to drive this vehicle with my child. I noticed that " engine stalling" and the engine in general have been a common issue specific year make and model while researching this vehicles history. There have also been many major repairs and more needed repairs that will cost more than the vehicles worth. The turbo was recently repaired , water bypass valve , valve cover, spark plugs. With more repairs to be made due to fluids still leaking , and a certified mechanic noting that the catalytic converter will need to be replaced. The repairs done and the repairs needed will greatly cost more than the vehicles worth. I'm asking that you guys take into consideration that im still paying on this vehicle and a single mom who cannot keep putting repairs into a vehicle that i desperaetly need for transportation.
When driving it makes farting noises and when you make a stop the rpm’s go up and down causing it to jump forward then will shut off and not start. If you open gas tank up and allow it to “fart” it will then start up and you can proceed to destination. Also if you shut car off while getting gas it might have you there for 10 minutes trying to start it but if you leave it on while pumping(which is not safe) it is fine. Talked with several Escape owners and all say they have same issues…so not sure why there hasn’t been a safety recall on it.
When I fuel up my 2013 Ford Escape Se it doesn’t want to start And the oil light and battery light flash on the display and to get the car to start I have to turn the key and keep pumping on the gas pedal then it eventually will start, but this happens every time I put gas in the vehicle. Called Ford and there isn’t a recall on this.
The vehicle stalled in the middle of the road on 5/24/2022. My husband was able to restart the vehicle and get it home and it stalled again in the driveway. There were no warning lights but the gas gauge was moving up and down. The car smelled of gasoline and there was smoke coming from the hood/ engine. We had it towed and the repair center told us that the gas line had split and was leaking gas. I called Ford and they confirmed my vehicle was not apart of the gas line recall but I would like to report it to see if I can get it on the recall list to get it repared.

The fuel wiring harness has exposed wires that are making the car miss and stall.
Fuel line started leaking at damper, personal mechanic pulled part and notified me that part was apart of recall. Damper part #: 120620A. 610732. Are all of the numbers on the damper. I git the part replaced at the personal cost of $180.04 on 08/02/2021
I purchased the car on June 09/2021 After taking the car home I noticed a severe lack of power at times when acceleration is crucial in order to navigate safely, such as when approaching an expressway ramp after having been at the light that controls access at the nearby intersection. Traffic moves quickly after lights change, and when I went to blend in from the merge lane, the car was inresponsive, the accelerator hit a dead spot that sent the engine spinning into very high rpms suddenly..5000 rpms The car became an obstacle and other drivers had to swerve to avoid an accident. All in the car were startled and I was upset because of the near collision. The usual sluggish engine response suddenly became dangerous. This car has 2 codes in the computer unit which are identified by these Codes..P0299-00 and P26AC-00 They only show if vehicle is hooked to a scanner and No Check Engine Light has been activated. My mechanic found them. The dealer refuses to admit theres any problem and FORD MOTOR has no recall for this issue. This car is available for inspection upon request.
The purge valve (whole system) has failed on my vehicle when it was on less than 5 years old. This can cause for the vehicle to pause which is dangerous. Because my purge valve (whole system) failed, not only did input my family at risk for danger, I now have to pay out of pocket to have this repair. I did not have the money to get it repair and now that I do I have to pay over $600. Ford has recognized that this is a systemic issue, however they somehow were able to focus their recall to specific manufacturers which did not cover all including my vehicle.
Fuel leak, with smell of gasoline filling the cabin. Leak was in the engine compartment. After car was towed I saw about 7-8 oz of gasoline pooled on my carport. Due to gas being flammable, I had the car towed in. Dealer says it needs a new fuel line for $505. Had someone lit a match, my house could have been set on fire. Also, since the leak was so strong, what if there was a short in any of the electronics? Again, major risk of fire.
I just bought this vehicle less than 3 months ago, and now it’s stuttering when I start it. It also stalls while driving.

NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON AND NO MECHANIC CAN FIND AN ISSUE. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE FIXED ASAP FORD!

WHEN IDLING THE ENGINE WILL STALL. IT WILL START RIGHT BACK UP BUT SOMETIMES WILL STALL AGAIN WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE. OFTEN THERE ISOK NO POWER WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE.. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM BUT THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WITH NO WARNING ON ACCELERATION (IN MOTION). THE VEHICLE WILL START AGAIN AND THIS CAN HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A ROW. THERE IS A SLOW ANTIFREEZE LEAK. EVERY TWO DAYS, ANTIFREEZE HAS TO BE ADDED BUT THE LEAK IS NOT VISIBLE. ALSO, UPON STARTING THE CAR, SHIFTING INTO DRIVE AND ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE; THE CAR WILL GET BOGGED DOWN RIGHT BEFORE 20 MILES PER HOUR AND THEN STOP UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN I TOOK IT IN, I WAS TOLD THESE ISSUES WERE INDEED RECALLS FOR 2013 FORD ESCAPES BUT "DID NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE" AND WAS SENT AWAY. NOW, MY FORD RANDOMLY STARTED LEAKING GAS LAST WEEK AFTER ONLY JUST TURNING IT ON WHILE SITTING IN MY HOME DRIVEWAY (DIDN'T DRIVE ANYWHERE). I LOOKED UP "GAS LEAKS IN 2013 FORD ESCAPE" AND ITS A RECALL FOR 1.6-LITER ENGINE, WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE BUT WHEN I PUT THE VIN IN THE RECALL WEBSITE IT SAYS "0 UNREPAIRED RECALLS". IN AUG. 2017 (94,888 MILEAGE), I HAD TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER BECAUSE THE ENGINE WOULD STALL AND STOP DUE TO HIGH ENGINE TEMPERATURE - I WAS CONSISTENTLY ADDING COOLANT, PROBABLY EVERY FEW DAYS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOUND THE COOLANT LEAK CAME FROM THE WATER PUMP, SO THEY REPLACED THE LEAKING WATER PUMP, AS WELL AS THE CABIN AIR FILTER AND SPARK PLUGS. THEN IN JUNE 2018, I HAD A FLAT TIRE AND COULDN'T PUT THE SPARE ON BECAUSE THE LUG NUTS WERE SWOLLEN/WARPED - TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE ALL SETS. IN SEPT. 2018 (113,516 MILEAGE), I WAS DRIVING HOME, THE ENGINE STOPPED ACCELERATING, AND I KNEW IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. THEY HAD TO "REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND COMPLETELY REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION". THEY ALSO FOUND THE HALF SHAFT WAS LEAKING, SO THEY "REPLACED THE LEFT HAND BUSHING/SEAL/HALF SHAFT BECAUSE THE SHAFT WAS SCORED". IN JAN. 2019, I HAD TAKEN THE CAR TO GET SERVICED BECAUSE WITHIN 1 DAYS TIME, I HAD 5 LIGHT BULBS BLOW OUT AND NEEDED REPLACING. LATER IN THE SUMMER 2019, I WAS HAVING COOLANT ISSUES AGAIN, AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME THE COOLANT SENSOR WAS MALFUNCTIONING. I DID NOT HAVE THAT REPLACED BECAUSE I SAID I WOULD KEEP AN EYE ON THE COOLANT LEVELS. NOW, APRIL 2020, MY COOLANT LEVEL'S ARE GETTING LOW AGAIN, AND THERE IS A CONSISTENT SMELL OF COOLANT SURROUNDING THE VEHICLE WHEN ENGINE IS ON. AFTER DRIVING FOR 20+ MINUTES, AND COMING TO AN IDLE STOP, THE CAR SMELLS LIKE EXHAUST AND COOLANT MIXED, AND THERE IS OCCASIONAL SMOKE BILLOWS FROM THE EXHAUST PIPES. I TOOK IT DIRECTLY BACK TO THE SHOP WHERE THEY WORKED ON IT FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS. AS IT WAS A SATURDAY, THEY ASKED ME TO BRING IT BACK IN ON TUESDAY WHEN THE SR. TECH WAS THERE. ON THAT DAY IT WAS THERE FOR ANOTHER 6 HOURS. THEY CONSULTED WITH THEIR HEAD TECH WHO HAS BEEN THERE OVER 30 YEARS AND ALSO WITH SEVERAL FORD LEAD TECHNICIANS. THEY REPLACED THE EGR VALVE AND ASKED ME TO LET THEM KNOW HOW IT WAS. THE NEXT MORNING I HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THEY ASKED ME TO BRING IT BACK IN AND THEY WERE TOLD BY FORD TO REPLACE A SENSOR. ONCE REPLACED THAT DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. AT THAT POINT THEY DECIDED WITH FORD TO TAKE IT TO FORD TO DO ANOTHER DIAGNOSIS. THE CODE SHOWS WHAT THEY'VE ALREADY FIXED. AT THIS POINT THERE IS NOT MUCH ELSE THEY CAN DO. I HAVE A VEHICLE THAT CAN'T BE FIXED AND I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING.

MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE HAS DEMONSTRATED THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL INJECTOR (SPECIFICALLY THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE SOLENOID) THAT WAS PART OF LAST FALL'S FOCUS RECALL. I HAD A PROBLEM LAST FALL WITH MY CAR WHINING, ROCKING WHEN IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, SMELLING LIKE BURNED FUEL, AND EVENTUALLY STALLING OUT ENTIRELY. LAST YEAR THE CAR STALLED OUT MULTIPLE TIMES INITIALLY WHILE STATIONARY, AND EVENTUALLY WHILE IN MOTION. EXPERIENCE WAS DIFFICULT TO REPRODUCE AS IT WAS SPORADIC AND NOT CONSISTENT. WE REPLACED THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE LAST YEAR WHICH RESOLVED THE PROBLEM, EXCEPT THE REPLACEMENT PART HAS NOW FAILED AGAIN A YEAR LATER WHILE I WAS SITTING IN BUSY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. MY CAR STARTED WHINING AND ROCKING THIS MORNING WHILE I WAS A STOP, TURNED OFF THE ENGINE, AND THEN I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES (BATTERY WOULD ENGAGE, ENGINE WOULD ATTEMPT TO TURN BUT WOULDN'T CATCH). IT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN IF I PULL OUT ONTO A HIGHWAY AND THE CAR STALLS I COULD POTENTIALLY BEING A FATAL CRASH. AND WHEN IT HAPPENS, THE COOLANT WILL SUDDENLY GO FROM AN OK LEVEL TO SUBSTANTIALLY BELOW MINIMUM. FURTHERMORE, THE ENGINE HAS A PERSISTENT BURNING SMELL OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. I'VE HAD TO DRIVE AROUND WITH A JUG OF COOLANT AND A PLASTIC SOLO CUP TO REFILL THE COOLANT TANK WHENEVER THE LOW COOLANT LIGHT LIGHTS UP. OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS, I'VE HAD TO REFILL THE COOLANT AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES. OVERALL, I AM CONCERNED THIS WAS A FUNDAMENTAL FLAW FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, AND INSTEAD OF DOING THE PROPER THING AND REBUILDING/REPLACING ENGINES BACK IN 2014 WHEN THE 13S12 RECALL OCCURRED, FORD PUT A BAND-AID OVER IT AND NOW THE ISSUES ARE RE-ARISING JUST WHEN SO ALL THE VEHICLES HAVE HAD THEIR WARRANTIES LAPSE. THEN I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING VERY ROUGH SUDDENLY. SOMETIMES A MESSAGE ON THE DASH READS MESSAGE FAULT / SERVICE ENGINE NOW. SOMETIMES THE ENGINE WILL RUN ROUGH AND THEN STALL OUT. SOMETIMES THE ENGINE JUST SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING. I CAN FIX IT BY COMING TO A STOP, PUTTING IT IN PARK, TURNING OFF THE IGNITION, WAITING SEVERAL SECONDS TO POWER DOWN AND THEN RESTARTING. MOST OF THE TIME THE AFTER DOING THIS THE VEHICLE WILL START RUNNING AGAIN OR THE ROUGH IDLE WILL CLEAR UP LIKE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. I CAN GO DAYS AND EVEN A COUPLE OF WEEKS WITHOUT INCIDENT. OTHER TIMES I CAN HAVE IT HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A DAY. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH DIFFERENT LEVELS OF FUEL, WITH THE A/C ON AND THE A/C OFF,IN THE RAIN AND ON SUNNY DAYS. IT HAS HAPPENED WITH THE ENGINE COLD FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AND HAPPENED AFTER DRIVING FOR HOURS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID THE VEHICLE DIDN'T HAVE ANY FAULT CODES STORED IN IT. THEY SAID MY VEHICLE HAD ALL THE REQUIRED RECALLS DONE. THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO DUPLICATE IT WHILE AT THEIR SHOP. THEY SAID THEIR BEST GUESS WAS A FAULTY FUEL SENSOR. THEY REPLACED THE SENSOR. LESS THAT A MONTH LATER THE VEHICLE WAS STILL DOING THE SAME THING AGAIN. THE ENGINE WILL SHUT OFF WHILE MOVING, SITTING IN PARK OR SITTING IN DRIVE. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS CREATES A VERY DANGEROUS CONDITION WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. AFTER HAVING THIS PROBLEM SO MUCH I STARTED RESEARCHING THIS ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH MANY FORD ESCAPES. SEVERAL YEAR AGO FORD RECALLED THIS VEHICLE AND REPLACED A FAULTY WIRING HARNESS TO FIX IT. I GUESS IT DIDN'T. I WISH FORD COULD FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PROBLEM, OTHERWISE THESE VEHICLES NEED TO BE OFF THE ROADS.

I GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT AND MY CAR WAS TOTALED. I HAD MECHANICS LOOK AT THE ISSUE AND THEY WOULD SAY THE O2 SENSOR, WASTEGATE SOLENOID OR EVAP LEAK. THEY WOULD NICKEL AND DIME ME WITH ALL THESE LITTLE THINGS. THE CODES WERE, P0234,P26B7 AND P0456. THEY SAID COOLANT WAS GETTING INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM AND THAT WAS CONTRIBUTING TO THE STALLING AND PROBLEMS. I HAD TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR AFTER MY ACCIDENT DUE TO SPINAL PAIN AND DISCOMFORT. HOWEVER, IT WAS WORTH THIS GETTING RID OF THIS LEMON ONCE AND FOR ALL. IF ANYONE ELSE IS EXPERIENCING THESE PROBLEMS, POST THE FIX SO THAT IT CAN SAVE SOMEONE ELSE FROM FINANCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL PAIN. WE WERE TOLD THAT WE HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL VAPOR SEPARATOR WHICH COST US $765; TODAY ONE MONTH LATER OUR TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I THINK IT IS UNFAIR TO HAVE TO PAY $765 ONLY TO HAVE TO RETURN TO AUTO NATION A MONTH LATER. THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A RECALL; A VEHICLE IS SUPPOSE TO START AFTER GETTING FUEL INSTEAD OF NOT STARTING. IN THE PAST YEAR THE FOLLOWING ISSUES HAVE ARISEN. 1) HEAT SENSOR HAS GONE BAD, WARNING LIGHTS AND BELLS SIGNALING A SERIOUS PROBLEM, AS THE CAR SHUTS DOWN. CAR WILL NOT START. REPLACED TWICE IN 8 MONTHS. 2) LEFT PASSENGER DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE - LATCH ISSUE AS STATED IN NHTSA RECALL 16V643. 3) IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS, THE CAR WILL STALL WITHOUT ANY WARNING. NOT OVERHEATING. COMPUTER DIAGNOSTICS SHOW NO PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, RESIDENTIAL DRIVING WITH FREQUENT STOP SIGNS, PULLING ONTO THE HIGHWAY, IN PARKING LOTS, A SHORT TRIP USUALLY DOES NOT PRODUCE THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, IF WE ARE RUNNING ERRANDS AND MAKE MORE THAN ONE (1) STOP, WE WILL DEFINATELY EXPERIENCE THE STALL DURING THE DRIVE HOME. CAR WILL COAST TO A STOP, NO INDICATION FROM GAUGES OF ANY ENGINE ISSUES. CAR HESITANTLY RESTARTS. THE RECALL WAS FOR ESCAPES BUILT OUT OF THE LOUISVILLE, KY PLANT UP TO JULY 11, 2012, MINE WAS BUILT ON JULY 30, 2012 FROM THE LOUISVILLE, KY PLANT. COINCIDENCE, I DON'T THINK SO. FORDS WORDS FROM THE DEALER IS THEY ARE WASHING THEIR HANDS OF THIS AND THEN CHARGED ME ALMOST $300 TO FIX WHAT IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES. NOT EVEN A DAY LATER (18 HOURS) AFTER PICKING UP THE CAR MY VEHICLE OVERHEATS AND IS POURING RADIATOR FLUID ON THE GROUND. THE DEALER TOWED IT BACK TO THE SHOP AND IS LOOKING AT IT NOW. I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS AS WELL, HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO BET MY VEHICLE IS JUST OUTSIDE THIS RECALL LIKE THE OTHER ONE. HAD THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP CHECK THE CODE AGAIN KEEPS READING TURBO PROBLEMS. THEY'RE FORD MACHINE WAS DOWN SO I TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP IN THE NEXT TOWN. SPECIFIC CODING SHOWED THAT IS A WIRING AND SPLICE PROBLEM. IN THE MEANTIME I'VE ALMOST BEEN RUN OVER SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE THE CAR WON'T ACCELERATE WHEN THE CODE IS THROWN. IF THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE WIRING HARNESS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED UNDER A RECALL WHICH I'VE BEEN TOLD IT IS NOT. AND TOMORROW DEALERSHIP IS REPLACING ALL OF THE SPLICING AND WIRING FOR ANOTHER $450. I'M AFRAID THAT THE PROBLEM MAY HAVE CAUSED OTHER ISSUES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER A TOTAL OF THREE TIMES TO HAVE THE WATER PUMP, COOLANT BOX, AND RADIATOR HOSE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURES STILL OCCURRED. OUR 2013 FORD ESCAPE SEL HAS BEEN STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING. OUR VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PREVIOUS RECALL BUT THE SYMPTOMS ATE EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN 2.0 LITER RECALL. THIS EVENT HAPPENS EVERY COUPLE DAYS SOMETIMES TWICE A DAY. IT TENDS TO HAPPEN SHORTLY AFTER STARTING AND MERGING/TURNING FROM A STOP/INTERSECTION. WE'VE TAKEN IT TO A FORD DEALER BUT THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO FIX IT. SEEMS LIKE A BIG SAFETY ISSUE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING.

ONE DAY AFTER YORK FORD REPAIRED CAR THAT I PICKED UP ON NOVEMBER 11TH 2017.YORK FORD SAID IT WAS ON WARRANTY ,NEVER MENTIONED A RECALL, CAR KEPT STALLING, YORK HAD IT TWICE FOR REPAIRS, IT CAUGHT ON FIRE WHEN I WAS DRIVING THE VERY NEXT DAY. LATER FOUND OUT FORD HAD 139,000 RECALLS ON 2013 ESCAPES FOR FUEL LINES AND POTENTIAL ENGINE FIRES. I DO HAVE PHOTOS AND A VIDEO BECAUSE AFTER I CALLED 911 I HAD MY PHONE OUT. MASS STATE POLICE AND REVERE FIRE DEPT. RESPONDED MAPFRE INSURANCE CO. DECLARED IT A TOTAL LOSS.. DONNA FROM YORK FORD TOLD ME TO FILL THE TANK UP BECAUSE THEY PUT A CLEANER IN THE FUEL.??? WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH, AN ALERT APPEARED STATING "LOW COOLANT". IN THE PAST THE CAR HAD STATED THE SAME ALERT BEFORE ALARMING THAT THE CAR WAS OVERHEATING AND NEEDED TO BE PULLED OVER. AT THAT POINT THE CAR WOULD THEN GOING INTO LIMP MODE. DUE TO THIS HISTORY, WE KNEW WE HAD TO ATTEMPT TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. WITHIN ONE MINUTE, THE CAR DID ALARM "OVERHEATING" AND WENT INTO LIMP MODE. WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO GET TO THE LEFT HAND SHOULDER OF AN ON-RAMP (MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY). AT THIS POINT WE GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND FOUND THAT THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS NORMAL. AFTER WAITING 20 MINUTES WE DROVE IN REVERSE UP THE ON-RAMP TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY, BECAUSE WE WERE CONFIDENT WE COULD NOT SAFELY GET TO THE NEXT EXIT (SEVERAL MILES AWAY). WE THEN HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL FORD DEALER (PHIL LONG FORD OF DENVER). THIS IS THE DEALERSHIP WHERE WE HAD PREVIOUSLY BROUGHT OUR VEHICLE TO REPAIR THIS SAME ISSUE. AT THAT TIME, THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED A BROKEN TEMPERATURE SENSOR, STATING THAT THIS WAS WHAT WAS CAUSING THE OVERHEATING ISSUES. OUR VEHICLE ALSO HAD MAINTENANCE COMPLETED ON IT AS PART OF THE 13S12 RECALL (RISK OF OVERHEATING) IN 2015. THE ISSUE CLEARLY HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AFTER MULTIPLE "FIXES" HAVE BEEN PERFORMED.

AT THE BEGINING, THERE WERE NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. CAR WILL RESTART BUT A 150 M LATER THE ENGINE WILL START FIGHTING TO STAY ON AND MOST OF THE TIME THE ENGINE LOSE THE BATTLE. SO I RESTART AGAIN UNTIL ( AFTER 2, OR 3 TIMES) THE ENGINE STAYS CONSTANTLY ON. MY BIG CONCERN WAS WITH THE HAZARDOUS AND RISKY SITUATIONS I FOUND MYSELF IN, SPECIALLY WHILE GETTING INRO A BUSY ROAD OR A HIGH WAY AND HAVING THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN ANDLET I DIDN'T HAVE TIME WHEN THE ENGINE LET ME OUT OF POWER. SOME DRIVERS ARE IN HURRY AND MIGHT NOT HAVE THE TIME TO STOP THEIR VEHICLE BEFORE HITTING ME. THAT'S WHY I ALWAYS PARKED MY CAR ON THE SIDEWALKS WHILE IN DISTRESS. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO ONE OF FORD DEALERS, THEY COULDN'T FIND THE ISSUE. I TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC AND HE MADE ME CHANGE A LOT OF PIECES BUT STILL NOT FIXED YET. I AM GOING BACK TO THE DEALER AND HOPEFULLY THEY'LL FIX THE ISSUE. IT COST ME $ 2500 UNTIL NOW AND STILL LOOKING FOR THE ISSUE.

I RECENTLY SAW THE NEWS ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK IN FORD EXPLORERS AND THINK MY CAR MAY ALSO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. AFTER I SAW THE STORY I DROVE WITH MY WINDOW OPEN AND DID NOT FEEL THE DROWSINESS THAT I HAVE FELT THE LSAT FEW MONTHS. I WOULD RECOMMEND THE INVESTIGATION EXTEND BEYOND JUST THE FORD EXPLORER BUT THROUGH ALL OF FORD'S OTHER MODELS LIKE THE FORD ESCAPE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS AND LIFE THREATENING ISSUE.

VEHICLE WAS GOING UP HILL AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH (TEMPERATURE GAUGE NORMAL) WHEN, WITHOUT WARNING, AN ALERT STATED THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW. IMMEDIATELY AFTER, A SECOND WARNING CAME ON SAYING THAT THE ENGINE WAS OVERHEATING AND TO PULL OFF THE ROAD SAFELY (NO LONGER ABLE TO ACCELERATE). THE COOLANT LEVEL WAS LOW, BUT HAD BEEN FILLED LESS THAN 3 MONTHS PRIOR. THERE ARE NO VISIBLE LEAKS OR CRACKS IN THE COOLANT RESERVOIR, TUBES, ETC. AFTER WAITING FOR 30 MINUTES, WE PROCEEDED TO COAST DOWN THE HILL IN NEUTRAL (AFTER FILLING THE COOLANT TANK WITH WATER). WE THEN BOUGHT COOLANT AT A LOCAL STORE AND PROCEEDED TO GO BACK UP THE HILL. THE CAR GAVE US THE SAME WARNINGS (COOLANT LOW AND ENGINE OVERHEATING). WE WERE UNABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THANKFULLY A POLICE OFFICER WAS RIGHT BEHIND US, SO WE DID NOT GET HIT. HE OFFERED TO USE THE BATTERING RAM ON THE FRONT HIS CAR TO PUSH US TO SAFETY. HOWEVER, THE CAR WAS ABLE TO GO THE EXTRA 5 FEET WHEN RESTARTED, PRIOR TO IT OVERHEATING AND LOCKING UP AGAIN. AFTER AN ADDITIONAL 30 MINUTES WE AGAIN WENT DOWN THE HILL IN NEUTRAL. AT THIS POINT WE DECIDED TO GIVE THE CAR A BREAK AND ATE DINNER AT A LOCAL RESTAURANT (APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR). WE THEN PROCEEDED TO DRIVE HOME. ABOUT AN HOUR INTO THE TRIP (WHILE GOING 65 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR AGAIN GAVE US THE 2 ALERTS (LOW COOLANT AND CAR OVERHEATING). WE BARLEY WERE ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY SAFELY. COOLANT LEVEL NORMAL. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. I WILL BE CONTACTING FORD TOMORROW TO DETERMINE IF OUR 2013 FORD ESCAPE WAS INCLUDED IN THE INITIAL RECALL (AND ALREADY HAD THE WORK COMPLETED), AS THERE ARE NO OPEN RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME. I AM HESITANT TO BRING THE CAR TO A DEALER AS IT APPEARS MANY PEOPLE HAVE GOTTEN THE RUNAROUND AND NO CLEAR SOLUTION HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. FORD NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS ISSUE.

I TOOK THE CAR TO KEARNEY PERSON FORD 7303 CLAIREMONT MESA BLVD SAN DIEGO, CA 92111 THEY TOLD ME THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND TURNED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF. SECOND INCIDENT: DRIVING TO WORK EARLIER THIS YEAR 2017 I GOT THE SAME MESSAGE THAT MY ENGINE COOLANT WAS LOW, AND TO SLOW DOWN BECAUSE OF CRITICAL OVERHEATING, EVEN THOUGH I HAD JUST HAD THE CAR SERVICED FOR A REGULAR MAINTENANCE CHECK, ONCE AGAIN AT KEARNY PERSON FORD. I WAS DRIVING NORMALLY ON A ROAD AT AROUND 30-40MPH BUT ACCELERATING WHEN THE MESSAGE POPPED UP. I REFILED THE COOLANT AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DID NOT TURN ON. THIRD INCIDENT: THIS WAS THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME. CRITICAL ENGINE OVERHEATING MESSAGE AND LOW COOLANT MESSAGE POPPED UP WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING UP HILL IN TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 20MPH ON THE I-5S AT THE IN CALIFORNIA GRAPEVINE. THE ENGINE NEARLY SHUT OFF AND LIMPED ON JUST A COUPLE CYLINDERS AS I TRIED TO GET TO THE SHOULDER. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE ENGINE WAS HOT. IT ALL HAPPENED IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE TEMP GAUGE WAS NORMAL AND THEN BAM! OVERHEATED WITH WARNING MESSAGES CRIPPLING THE CAR. DRIVING SLOWLY BUT THE WEATHER WAS HOT IT WAS NEARLY 110 DEGREES OUTSIDE. SEEMS SUPER DANGEROUS. BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF WARNING WHEN THESE INCIDENTS HAPPEN. THE WAY THAT THE COOLANT JUST DISAPPEARS, AND THE SMOKE AND CHANCE OF FIRE.

TWO DAYS LATER, WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, A STRONG FUEL ODOR WAS DETECTED IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS UNKNOWN, BUT THE MECHANIC STATED THAT FUEL LEAKS WERE A COMMON ISSUE WITH FORD VEHICLES. ESPECIALLY HAVING CONTINUAL ISSUES WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM, IT IS GETTING VERY EXPENSIVE FOR ME. I AM A SINGLE, DISABLED, ELDERLY FEMALE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO KEEP TAKING MY VEHICLE TO THE SHOP TO BE SERVICED EVERY MONTH WHEN IT IS A 2013 AND SHOULDN'T HAVE SO MANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS. I GET MY OIL CHANGED AS SCHEDULED AS WELL AS BRAKES CHECKED AND TIRES REPLACED AS NEEDED. I REALLY AM IN NEED OF A RELIABLE VEHICLE BECAUSE I AM DISABLED AND I WAS SO SURE THAT THE FORD ESCAPE WAS THE ONE SINCE I HAD DRIVEN AN EXPEDITION FOR 10 YEARS WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS. MY SOLUTION AT THIS POINT WOULD BE TO TRADE IT IN FOR SOMETHING ELSE, BUT I CANNOT AFFORD TO DO THAT AT THIS TIME. AFTER EXTENSIVE WORK AND OVER ALMOST $2,000 SPENT MY VEHICLE ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AND I CONTINUE TO HAVE TROUBLE STARTING MY VEHICLE AFTER ADDING FUEL EVERY SINGLE TIME. THE FUEL ISSUE REALLY WORRIES ME BECAUSE WHENEVER I GET OUT OF MY VEHICLE I SMELL GAS AND DON'T THINK THAT IS NORMAL. DECEMBER '15, I TURNED MY CAR ON AND RECEIVED AN ALERT "ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW" WHILE STILL IN PARK. I HAD TO MOVE IT A FEW BLOCKS AND DROVE IT AT A SLOW RATE, THE CAR JERKED BACK & FORTH WHILE I DROVE IT THE 2 BLOCKS BEFORE I PARKED IT AGAIN. WENT IN FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND MY HUSBAND WAS ADVISED THAT THE HEAT SHIELD OVER THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER APPEARED TO BE DISINTEGRATING. THE TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED IT WOULD BE A FIRE HAZARD AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED ASAP. WE WENT TO IMMEDIATELY TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY ATTEMPTED TO ASSERT WE HAD HIT SOMETHING. BASED ON POSITION OF SHIELD I'M NOT ENTIRELY SURE THAT'S POSSIBLE. WE HAD NOT HIT ANYTHING WITH THE CAR SO THE ASSERTION WAS JUST OFFENSIVE, THAT PLUS THE FACT THAT THERE IS ZERO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. SO, WE HIT SOMETHING THAT WAS ABLE TO DAMAGE THE HEAT SHIELD IN THE UNDER BODY OF THE VEHICLE WITHOUT CAUSING ANY OTHER DAMAGE? RIGHT! THEN THEY SAID COULD BE 'WEATHER' CONDITIONS AS WE LIVE ON A GRAVEL ROAD. THIS APPEARS TO BE A CONSISTENT THEME FROM OTHER POSTINGS, ALTHOUGH IN THEIR CASE THEY WERE TOLD SNOW! MAYBE FORD DOESN'T MAKE VEHICLES TO BE USED IN OTHER THAN PRISTINE DRIVING CONDITIONS. WONDER WHERE I'D HAVE TO TRAVEL TO FIND THOSE? APPARENTLY, FORD ELECTED TO INSTALL A PART ABOVE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER THAT DOESN'T APPEAR AS WELL CONSTRUCTED AS THE PANS I USE TO MAKE BAR-B-QUE ON MY GRILL; AND WHICH INCIDENTALLY DON'T APPEAR TO HOLD UP TO EITHER SNOW OR GRAVEL ROADS IF YOU BELIEVE THE EXCUSES OF THEIR SERVICE ADVISERS. OUR DEALERSHIP CHARGED $167 FOR THE HEAT SHIELD AND ANOTHER $109 TO INSTALL IT FOR A TOTAL BILL OF $290.09 AFTER TAXES. THE PART ITSELF APPEARS DESIGNED FOR FAILURE AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT WE WERE PRICE GOUGED WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE ADVISER ACTUALLY GAVE ME THE PART TO SHOW ME AFTERWARDS. IT IS LITERALLY SHOCKING TO ME THAT SOMETHING THIS CHEAPLY MADE COULD BE INSTALLED IN THE UNDER BODY OF ANY VEHICLE. BAR-B-QUE PANS THAT I CAN BUY FOR 4 FOR $10 WOULD HAVE PROVIDED BETTER LONGEVITY. SHAME ON FORD AND THE DEALERSHIP THAT PRICE GOUGED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF FORD'S DESIGN FAILURE. *TR

AT START-UP, THERE WAS AN ERROR MESSAGE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ABOUT AN ENGINE FAULT INSTRUCTING ME TO SEEK SERVICE IMMEDIATELY. AS IT WAS AFTER 6 PM, AND THE DEALER SERVICE SHOP WAS CLOSED, I DRIVE HOME. THE ENGINE WAS "SPUTTERING" AS IF IT WAS GOING TO STALL. THE CAR HAD MINIMAL POWER AND DIDN'T ACHIEVE A SPEED OVER ABOUT 25 MPH. I RAN A VEHICLE HEALTH REPORT, WHICH INDICATED A PROBLEM IN THE ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, OR POWERTRAIN; IT INSTRUCTED ME TO HAVE THE CAR SERVICED. THE NEXT MORNING, THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS. AT THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING DAY, NO PROBLEM CODES CAME UP, AND THE DEALER WOULDN'T REPLACE THE ETB SINCE THERE ISN'T A RECALL. I BELIEVE, HOWEVER, THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE ETB AND THAT I'M BEING PLACED IN AN UNNECESSARILY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THE ETB CAN FAIL UNEXPECTEDLY. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL! *TR

CAR HAS BEEN GIVING US AN ERROR MESSAGE "ENGINE FAULT SERVICE NOW" SINCE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. FORD HAS BEEN UNABLE TO REPAIR FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CAR HAS NO STARTED TO SHUT OFF IN TRAFFIC. THE INCIDENT ON 12/27 I WAS SLOWING DOWN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. CARS WHERE ABLE TO AVOID US AND WE WERE ABLE GET THE CAR RESTARTED BUT IT IS BECOMING A HAZARD TO NOT ONLY US BUT EVERYONE ON THE ROAD. TWO WEEKS PRIOR THE CAR SHUT OFF WHILE WE WERE AT A RED LIGHT. FORD HAS BEEN UNABLE TO FIX AND UNWILLING TO WORK WITH US ON THIS ISSUE. I HAVE SEEN COMMENTS ON LINE THAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE FACED SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE 2013 ESCAPE. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TURNED IN TO BROWN DAUB FORD IN NAZARETH, PA WHERE IT WAS REPORTED TO HAVE DIED TWICE ON THE ROAD. THEY THEN REPORTED IT DIED ON THEM TWICE ALSO. THEY REPLACED THE ENGINE FUEL PUMP AS THIS IS THE ECOBOOST THERE ARE TWO PUMPS (ONE AT FUELTANK ONE AT ENGINE) AND RETURNED THE CAR. IT DROVE FOR 30 MINUTES AND DIED AGAIN IN AN INTERSECTION WHERE IT ALMOST CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. THE DEALERSHIP WROTE UP THE COMPLAINT AS CAR WANTS TO STALL WHICH IS NOT WHAT WAS SAID. THEY WERE TOLD IT DIED AND WAS DANGEROUS, THEY RETURNED IT WITH THE SAME MILEAGE AS THEY TOOK IT IN SO IT WAS NOT TEST DRIVEN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND WILL CAUSE A DEATH. THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE IS A HAZARD. WITH NO MORE THAN 3-4 INCHES OF SNOW THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE TO GET ME AND OCCUPANTS OUT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. A CLOSE CALL WHEN MY ONLY OPTION WAS TO BACK UP AND THE PEOPLE BEHIND ME TO OFFER ME ROOM. THE VEHICLE SITS WITH THE ACCELERATOR FLOOR OR MODULATED BUT WILL NOT MOVE. AFTER READING THE OWNERS MANUAL IT TELLS ME " IN SOME INSTANCES OF DEEP SNOW" (NOT!) TURN OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL VIA THESE 4-5 STEPS. HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GOING TO DO THAT WHEN YOUR GOING TO GET HIT. IN MY ESTIMATION THIS IS A HAZARD! THEIR TRACTION CONTROL IS A DANGER IT DOES NOT WORK PERIOD. KEEP APPT FOR MON. AT ABOUT 423PM THAT DAY STARTED CAR AND ENGINE FAULT NOTED ON START TRIED TO DRIVE OUT OF PARKING GARAGE. CAR WAS MISSING AND BARELY MOVING. TRANSMISSION MADE LOUD CLUNK NOISE. COASTED CAR DOWN PARKING GARAGE SO TOW TRUCK WOULD BE ABLE TO ACCESS IT. TOWED TO CROWN FORD. OFFERED VEHICLE HEALTH REPORT I RAN STATING IT WAS POWERTRAIN ISSUE. THEY DECLINED NEEDED IT. CHECKED AND REPLACE MAP SENSOR. PICKED UP ON 6/11/13 AND 06/12/13 STALLED AGAIN EARLY IN THE MORNING ABOUT 600AM AND THEN I WAS ADVISED TO BRING BACK TO DEALER. STALLED AGAIN ON WAY TO DEALER APPROXIMATELY 1130 AM. ADVISED SERVICE DEALER THEY RAN DIAGNOSTIC FOR THE NEXT WEEK WHICH ALL CAME BACK NORMAL. SERVICE MANAGER DROVE ON 06/17 AND STATED PROBLEM REPRODUCED AND WOULD REPLACE THROTTLE BODY.THIS WAS DONE AND I PICKED UP ON 06/21. 06/23 AT APPROXIMATELY 204 PM CAR STALLED AGAIN...RESTARTED AFTER PUTTING IN NEUTRAL UNABLE TO COME TO A STOP VEHICLES BEHIND US...RESTARTED WHEN RESTARTED ENGINE MISSING AGAIN WHEN PUSHED GAS THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO MAKE A CLUNK NOISE AND STALLED AGAIN.THE VEHICLE WITHOUT NOTICE STALLS AND IS A GREAT SAFETY ISSUE AND AFTER LAST STALL THE RPM SEEMS TO REV UP SOME.THIS IS A MAJOR DEFECT AND LIFE THREATENING DEFECT. 2013 FORD ESCAPE SITUATION IS THAT WHEN I TRANSFER MY FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, BESIDES LIGHTLY BRAKING THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES A SURGE IN ACCELERATION ... CAUSING UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION WHEN THE DRIVER WOULD EXPECT THE VEHICLE TO BE BRAKING. THERE ARE 1 OR 2 PROBLEMS: 1) THE BRAKE PEDAL IS TOO CLOSE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL [MORE SO FOR A MALE DRIVER WITH A WIDER FOOT THAN A FEMALE DRIVER]. 2) THE BRAKE PEDAL HAS TOO MUCH MOVEMENT WHILE THE DRIVER IS TRYING TO BRAKE, IN THAT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL PUSHES THE PEDAL TO AND PAST THE ACCELERATOR PETAL; IN THAT IF THE FOOT IS NOT EXACTLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE ACCELERATOR PUSHES DOWN AND CAUSES A POWER SURGE, WHEN THE DRIVER IS EXPECTING THE VEHICLE TO BE BRAKING. THE PROBLEM IS THE DESIGN AND FUNCTION OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKE PETAL HAS SUCH A LONG TRAVEL, THAT WHEN A PERSON'S FOOT IS NOT 100% ON THE BRAKE THAT THE FOOT ALSO PRESSES ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SURGE FORWARD UNEXPECTEDLY, INSTEAD OF STOPPING. THIS IS MOST LIKELY TO HAPPEN WITH A MAN'S FOOT, BEING WIDER THAN A FEMALE'S FOOT. I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ON VARIOUS OCCASIONS; ALL OF WHICH CAUSED AN EXTREMELY TRAUMATIC SITUATION(S): 1) TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY, WHEN TRAFFIC BACKS UP OR ANOTHER VEHICLE CHANGES INTO MY DRIVING LANE - IN EITHER CONDITION, WHERE FORCED TO BRAKE 'UNEXPECTEDLY', THE VEHICLE SURGES FORWARD. 2) WHEN BRAKING AT AN INTERSECTION, TAKING THE FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR TO THE BRAKE, INITIALLY THE CAR SLOWS DOWN, BUT WHEN THE BRAKE IS PRESSED TO STOP THE CAR, THE CAR ACCELERATES UNEXPECTEDLY, I.E, A PEDESTRIAN IS CROSSING THE STREET IN AN INTERSECTION AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATES UNEXPECTEDLY AND POSSIBLY INJURING THE PEDESTRIAN. MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE, 1.6 LITER ENGINE, HAD 3 RECALLS, (TWO WERE ENGINE FIRE RELATED). ALL 3 RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE BY THE LOCAL FORD DEALER, SALEM, VA. WE PICKED VEHICLE UP AFTER THIRD RECALL WORK HAD BEEN DONE ON 9/17/12. WE ASSUMED THE RECALL WORK WAS DONE CORRECTLY, AND THAT FORD'S "FIX" WORKED CORRECTLY. ON 9/21/12 WE WERE TRAVELING EAST AT 65 MPH IN THE RIGHT LANE ON I-64 NEAR CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. IT WAS ABOUT 1 PM IN THE AFTERNOON. THERE WAS A "POP" SOUND IN THE ENGINE AREA. INSTANTLY, THE ACCELERATOR HAD NO RESPONSE, THE HIGH ENGINE TEMPERATURE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, AND THEN ALL WARNING LIGHTS, GAUGES, & TACHOMETER ALL WENT DEAD. LUCKILY, WE WERE ADJACENT TO AN EXIT RAMP, AND WE COASTED TO A STOP ON RTE 20/53. IMMEDIATELY, WHITE STEAM CAME OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. KNOWING THE THIRD RECALL DEALT WITH THE "RISK OF ENGINE FIRES", WE GOT OUT, AND MOVED WELL AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE. WITHIN MINUTES, BROWN, OILY SMOKE CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THEN FLAMES CAME OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AT THE WINDSHIELD AND OUT THE SIDES OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THEN THE CAR BURST INTO FLAMES AND WAS DESTROYED. PICTURES WERE TAKEN OF THE VEHICLE ON FIRE, AND AFTER IT WAS OUT, WITH A CELL PHONE. AFTER THE FIRE WAS OUT, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALER IN CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.. WE WERE TOLD THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAD RETAINED A FIRE INSPECTOR TO LOOK AT THE CAR, AND ASK ME QUESTIONS, WHICH HE DID. LATER THE INSPECTOR SAID THE INSURANCE COMPANY DID NOT REQUIRE A REPORT.
