Steering Assist Fault. This issue is coming up more often. When the car is started it says this error message on the dash and the steering wheel cannot be turned. We have to turn it off, wait a minute, and restart it. Most of the time this remedies the problem but lately we have had to turn it off and on several times to get it to clear up and the steering working again. This is documented all over the Ford forums. Please open an investigation as this is a serious issue and should not be happening. We have never been able to replicate it for Ford or anyone else. It is very random.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024 I started my 2013 Ford Escape, put it in reverse and the steering froze and I could not turn the steering wheel. On Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024 I took it to the mechanic and he had the same thing happen and diagnostic indicated thatthe power steering needed replacement. I contacted Ford Motor Company and they stated that my VIN was not included in their recall of the 2013 Ford Escapes. They declined to share with me other similar complaints. I have since learned from a Ford escape owners page that the are many complaints by owners and can't get any help from Ford. I would liked the NHTSA to investigate and report on how may owners are being denied inclusion in the 2013 Ford Escape steering recall.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at approximately 15 MPH, the steering wheel made it difficult to turn to the left or the right. The steering assist failure warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by a local independent mechanic, and it was determined that the electronic steering assist had failed. The vehicle was towed back to the residence. The vehicle was diagnosed by another local independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the electronic steering gear had failed. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V340000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

I have experienced many issues with my vehicle that have been recalled in other vehicles of the same make/model/year but have been denied the assistance in fixing me car and preventing and further damage or risk of my safety due to my VIN not showing any recalls. I do believe that my safety has been disregarded and that my car needs inspection to further show that I should be assisted in getting the recalls identified and fixed to improve my safety and others on the road. The first issue I noticed that was recalled on other 2013 Ford escapes was a recall on the control arm which was caused by the separation of the control arm from corrosion which increased the risk of crash. I had an incident where my car all of the sudden would not return from the right turning position after I heard a clunking noise which caused me to run into a curb. After further investigation it was found that my control arm failed and locked which wouldn't allow me to avoid hitting the curb. I suffered a concussion and had to pay for this to be fixed due to being denied from the recall. Secondly, Ford has issued many recalls on 2013 Ford escape engines due to overheat and cylinder head malfunctions many of them my car has been diagnosed and proven to have. I have pulled codes from my check engine that are direct codes that was recalled about the overheating of the cylinder head causing cracks and leaks into the oil. This code I pulled from my car was P0117 and it was traced to the recall from ford ( 13V583000). Other recalls have been issued by Ford for engine overheating, and my car has been over heating after directly putting coolant into my vehicle and it tends to run out in 1 to 2 days after refilling. My safety and others on the road are at risk from these issues that were not caused by me or other drivers but I am not getting any assistance or anyone willing to look at these recalls and assist in reimbursement or fixing my cars issues. My car needs to be reviewed for the recalls.

I was driving my vehicle home and as I was turning to the street I live on the power steering went out and I almost lost control of the car. I had to use all my strength to turn the wheel and barely miss an oncoming car in the turn. If my wife would have been behind the wheel Im certain it would have caused an accident. After getting home I searched for what may have caused the loss of power for the steering and I read this has been a reported problem but the NHSTA has not issued a recall. Why? Does someone need to die or be injured before it is investigated and issue a recall?

Steering wheel locks up intermittently. Never know when the steering wheel may lock up. When able to use steering wheel there is no power assist to help with turning the steering wheel. Hesitant to use car out on the road because I don't know when the power steering may go out and make it very difficult to turn the steering wheel to get off the road to somewhere safe.

I started my Escape to come home (about an hour and half from home). I immediately got a message that said Steering Assist - Immediate Service Required . I turned the car off and restarted it and got the same message. I got really nervous, but thought maybe it would steer like a vehicle without power steering - which I have driven long ago. But the wheel would not turn at all. I could only go forward. I turned the car off and went to the bathroom thinking I was going to have to call my husband to have him come and get me and have my Escape towed home. When I got back in the car and started it up, the message was gong and the vehicle was working. I drove home, scared all the way, that it was gong to happen again and the road was very mountainous with uncountable turns. Thank God I made it home.

I believe there was a recall on this same issue with other Ford's but I searched the recall list with my VIN number and a recall does not exist for my 2013. This is a severe safety issue and will cost me thousands of dollars to replace.

Several times in the past month the "power steering assist " fault has appeared when I start the car and I am unable to mover the steering wheel. It locks in place. I have to turn off the car and turn it back on again, trying several times for the steering wheel to unlock. This is a serious issue and I'm afraid it may happen while at a stop light or while driving.

When steering the vehicle a loud,strange noise suddenly occurred. It started being hard to steer around corners and especially when turning right. I took it to my mechanic today and he told me the rack and pinion looked like it had blown apart,he could see inside parts that shouldn't be visible.

Turned the car off and then back on and the message did not appear. Turned the car on this morning and received the same message and the steering wheel would not move. Multiple car owners of this vehicle have complained about this issue and Ford is not doing a recall. It appears this has been an issue with Ford Escapes of many years.

I have already paid for a new transmission when the transmission recall was out and the Gilley Hyde Ford local dealership was dishonest with me and replaced almost $2000 of extra things and gave it back to me broken.

This isn't the 1st time just the most recent. There's a recall on other years of the same vehicle with Ford for the same problem but not for 2013.

Steering assist fault light has come on randomly since I bought the car in February of 2022 and just 2 days ago on March 30th 2024 my power steering in my vehicle is starting to go making a God awful sound like someone threw gravel into a wood chipper. I see ford has had a recall out for this once before but ultimately are wiping their hands clean of it. This is ridiculous owning a car that has had this many safety recalls on it.

I own a 2013 ford Escape sel. While driving on the road a message appears and states steering assist fault. When this happens the steering becomes very hard to steer. I feel like I can’t even pull over because it is very hard to steer. I feel is very unsafe. Another msg that appears is hill start assist not available and then with that massage 911 assist fault. All of these messages to me seem very unsafe and need to be looked at. I looked online and there are thousands of people complaining about these problems.

Started my car and had no steering with no warning. Thank God I wasn’t driving the car when this happened. Spoke with Ford Dealership and they knew exactly what the issue was. They said it was a malfunction of the rack and pinion steering which they said was common on the 2013 Ford Escape. Cost for Ford Dealership to repair was $2,700.

Since we bought the car we have always had problems with the steering locking up. Was told the whole rack and pinion which is electric needed to be changed. I have read that this is a huge problem with FORDS. My wife was driving on the highway and it locks up and she can’t steer. Please check into how many ford vehicles have this problem. I received an alert on the dash that says "steering assist fault service req'd" I have received this alert in the past, in the middle of driving. When the alert comes on, the power steering completely goes out, making it impossible to turn the wheel. It's scary knowing that I can be driving and the power steering can go out at anytime, due to evident poor engineering on Ford's behalf. There have been a plethora of other Escape's that had reported this exact issue. For whatever reason, Ford decided to not recall the 2013 model, even though it experiences the same issue that the other year models were recalled for. This is putting myself and others' at danger and currently the vehicle is stuck and I am not able to turn the wheel at all. Ford is unwilling to cooperate. This is easily something Ford should be willing to look at and FIX for zero cost. An engineering issue within the electrical components of the car is not something I should be held responsible for. I didn't build the car. Nor was I given any sort of warning when the steering just all of a sudden went out, while I'm driving on a busy highway. What can we do to get Ford to cooperate to FIX the issue at no cost on my end? Thank you in advance.

Steering Assist Fault - Contact Dealer is what appears on my vehicle screen. No power steering in vehicle - unable to drive, have to have it towed to dealer. Vehicle worked perfectly fine one hour before going back out to vehicle to start and run an errand. Vehicle on has 84,500 miles. There are recalls on 914,000 Escapes and Explorers up to 2012. The same component is in my 2013 vehicle that is in the vehicles in the recall. Ford needs to be responsible for these components in their vehicles that could cause a major accident, injury or death. This component should be paid for in full by Ford, not the customer.

The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected at this time. Power steering assist fault warning displayed on the dash of 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. Can’t turn wheel. Wheel was so hard to turn if my wife had been driving she would have wrecked and potentially seriously hurt thr two of us and our 3 grandchildren. Car has 92k miles and we’ve already replaced the transmission $5k. From what I’ve read this will be a minimum of $1.2k. It’s sad when their profitability is more important than people’s week being, potentially lives.

First: A steering assist fault "service vehicle" started to appear on my dashboard of my 2013 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0 L . Steering is very hard and will not turn when in park and ready to drive, i can change gears, but steering is locked. I turn the ignition (push button) off, then it unlocks. I thought it was because I was putting in gear too quick after starting, but it does it even when I wait a couple of seconds to engage the gears. I don't want to encounter this problem while driving for obvious reasons. I have not confirmed it with a dealer since it doesn't do it all the time. Problem has not been inspected by anyone yet, but I've seen other posts of the expensive costs to repair. No other warning lamps of messages and this started a week ago (o/a 1 Oct 23). Second: I am getting very poor fuel consumption (about 17-18 MPG). A check with my FIXD device confirmed what I thought was the problem - "Fuel Pressure Sensor 'B' Circuit Low and Low Pressure Fuel System Pressure Too High". I don't see any safety concerns other than I might be left stranded in the desert one day. Dealer tell me that if I see no warning lamps on my dashboard, I shouldn't worry too much (hello?). I now have 115,800 miles on this vehicle.

Have a Ford 2013 Escape SEL with 79,337 miles. The vehicle has been a lemon from the time I purchased it in 2014. Have replaced the water pump, a sensor, the turbocharger, the engine shield and now the rack and pinion steering. Stopped at a gas station and when started the car again to back out, received the 'Steering assist fault Service required' alert and lost all powering steering. Had to drive the car home. Mechanic charging $1860 + tax and a Ford dealership quoted $2593 + tax. Sent emails to the Executive Team at Ford and did receive a call back. Was told that unfortunately there are no recalls for my VIN/year. How is Ford allowed to get away with manufacturing faulty vehicles which can cause accidents, injuries or worse!! HOLD FORD ACCOUNTABLE!!!!

I recieved a Power Steering Assist Failure notification and then my power steering went out in my car as I was driving it making the car extremly hard to control. This happened multiple time without warning as I was driving my car. At the time my car has around 39,000 miles on it. I took my car to a Ford dealership to have the problem fixed and the repair was extemly costly, around $2,900, to replace the entire rack and pinion. From a online search this is a very common problem with this year of the Escape and a safety recall for the same issue was issued for earlier models of the Escape and other Ford models. When I spoke to the dealership, the technician confirmed that this is a common problem with Ford Escapes. I believe that later models of the Escape should be included in the recall and I'd like to be reimbursed for the work done.

December of 2022 - Took car to shop due to engine overheat light and oil smell inside vehicle as well as other "codes coming up. Vehicle was repaired. May 2023 had to take car back to shop due to cranking and it immediately saying engine overheating, low coolant, and various other codes as well as brakes not properly functioning. Repair shop said it was low on coolant and added fluid, stated no leaks and returned vehicle. But repair shop shows it pulled 15 codes, including loss of communication with ABS control module A as well as 3 other "lost communication with" codes and the engine overheating. The NEXT day we had the same issues and had to put it back in the shop. They flushed system and replaced motor because a bad head gasket caused oil to mix with the water (again). Got the vehicle back July 10th and the traction control and braking felt off as it had before in Dec 2022 but then was fine. Noticed on 7/11 that there appeared to be something in the fluid tank that shouldn't be there (like black chunks) and called the repair shop to see about scheduling another diagnostic. On 7/13 my son was driving from work and the engine suddenly stalled saying overheating when it wasn't showing overheating. Pulled over, started to crank it back up and it was fine. On 7/14 on his was to work, he pulled to the edge of the roadway to miss multiple deer in the road and was unable to steer the vehicle back onto the roadway. The traction control kicked in and he could not steer the car back onto the road, brakes did not work and ended up causing him to crash. I have driven the car a few times when traction control would kick in when it really shouldn't and it would not allow me to steer, accelerate, or really do anything until it shut back off.

On 6/15,2023, upon starting my car after being parked, a warning message appeared briefly about a "steering fault." The message quickly disappeared. Upon driving the car, I noticed I had lost power steering. I was forced to drive my car home without power steering. Fortunately, the distance was only a few miles, and with caution I was able to get home safely. This problem has been reported by other 2013 Ford Escape drivers, some of whom have lost power steering while driving, which is a significant safety concern. I will be making a service appointment at my local Ford dealer today. Other 2013 Ford Escape drivers have reported online that this repair may cost $1500-3000.

When the vehicle was turned off and restarted, the power steering would come back on. We took the car to the Ford dealership and they confirmed that there was a Control Module internal electrical failure (PSCM) and they recommended the power steering system be replaced at our expense. The repair bill was $2550.16. The loss of power steering in a vehicle is a critical safety issue, as it could result in an accident.

My wife and I own a 2013 Ford Escape SE that developed a "Steering Assist Failure" error message on the dashboard. This failure causes the power steering to drop and the steering wheel has to be manually turned. When she drove it, she didn''t know what to do, so she drove it a few blocks to our house and told me about what happened. When I drove it and that happened to me, I put the vehicle back in park and shut the engine off for about 10 seconds. When I turned it back on, the error message went away and I was able to use the power steering without any problems.

Has occurred over 25 times. This was part of a recall and has been removed from being a recall now. Warning sensors go off randomly in the car all of the time and are inaccurate creating distractive driving for youth and has created dangerous situations. DMV citation during driving test regarding the sensor malfunctions. Back-Up Camara Broken, and Trunk will not open or close in weather below 40 preventing use in late fall winter early spring.

Was driving along and my steering wheel got stiff, couldn’t turn it either direction. Almost resulting in a crash into the guard rails. When I pulled harder to avoid going into said rails it literally pulled a 45degree turn into oncoming traffic!!!! I was able to brake in time before fully sending into the ditch narrowly missing traffic! The fact that there isn’t a recall on the electric power steering with all of the complaints is atrocious at best!!!!!!!!

On a few separate occasions beginning in the summer of 2022, my steering wheel has locked up after turning the ignition on. Each time this happened, I had to wait for it to "unlock", which is usually just seconds. However, on January 22, 2023 WHILE DRIVING I received a message on the dashboard that said "steering assist fault" and I had to pull over because the steering wheel was too hard to maneuver, whether it be turning left or right. I felt like it was going to break I had to turn it so hard, and with my entire body. Once I pulled over I turned the car off and let it sit for a couple of minutes and then re-started it. The message went away but the steering was really sloppy, to the point where it felt like I could turn the wheel 180 degrees with the tires barely turning themselves. Once I got home and parked it for the night, I took it to a local mechanic and they were unable to get any messages from it but did discover I'm not the only Ford who has had issues with this message and/or steering. I talked to my Ford dealer and they have heard about the problem with other Fords. I would like someone to check into it because it could become a real liability for Ford if this problem is not resolved. By googling the search terms "ford steering assist failure" I was able to bring up a big forum wherein other Ford owners were complaining of this issue .

You cannot steer this car if the power assist isn't working, lots of complaints about this issue but nobody is checking into it, if this isn't a safety problem than there isn't any reason for you to be in business for you are not recognizing a serious problem, I know a little door latch is important but no where close to this problem. can you imagine going down the road at 60 miles per hour and your steering goes out. also the cross over on the rear suspension must be made of low grade tin for it has completely rotted away, this crossover holds the rear suspension. I was driving when I got a warning for steering assist fault. The car is incredibly difficult to turn now, making driving it incredibly dangerous. There were no warnings; it had been driving fine on the way to work, but no longer was when I started it to come home. I saw a mechanic who said it was a steering rack default, and he had been seeing a lot of similar defects in Ford Escapes and Ford trucks. He left after diagnosing as there was nothing he could do to fix it. We called an official Ford dealership afterwards to get a quote, when we were told even if we brought the car in, there was no guarantee they could fix the car because the parts they need are backordered across the country. He also confirmed this is a prevalent issue in Escapes.

I purchased this 2013 Escape new. It has been driven only 35, 438 miles. On July 4, 2022, started the car in my garage, got a message "steering assist failure", could not move steering wheel. On restarting car, it had reset. Called dealer, got appointment for July 7. They checked for dtcs-u3000-49-08, was told "Ford pinpoint testing leads to failed power steering gear, estimate $2300". At 35 thousand miles? I am paying and getting it repaired, of course - I could not trust this car otherwise. if you lose your steering on the highway, it could cause a major accident.

The day before the steering was just fine and had taken a long drive on the interstate. Could not control steering when car was driven out of the garage the next morning. Car was towed to a car dealership due to very stiff steering since it would have been dangerous to try to drive. Asked tech at dealership to check and advise. A steering fault message was on the dash. Tech wrote, "pulled codes for the rack and pinion. Per pinpoint test the rack has an internal failure. Replaced the rack, programmed the system and performed an alignment. Steering operated normal now." There were no symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

Date of incident, May 19th 2022. While driving home from work on highway 270, as it was raining, my power steering suddenly and without any warning stopped working & has not worked since. I called the Ford manufacturer directly and I have a case number from them on the issue. Ford is well aware of the manufacturer defect in their ford escape steering computer chips and they do not want to address the issue because it would be bad for them financially as well as hurt their publicity. The repair would cost as quoted by the dealership $2400. This is a huge safety issues for the public on any roadways. If this situation happened to a young inexperienced driver or an elderly driver there would be a high potential for a crash on highways and other roadways. Luckily I was able to control the situation and was able to avoid a terrible outcome. Furthermore, it takes physical strength to operate the car which again young and elderly drivers would not be able to drive or have extreme difficulty driving. This is a potentially deadly issue and Ford does not want the general public to know. I hope for the safety of the public Ford is made to recall the vehicle for this specific issue that they are blatantly aware of and want to ignore. Ford has forever lost my family along with myself as a longtime customer.

In my driveway two times so far my power assist failed giving me an error on my drivers screes automatic power assist failure. The steering became almost impossible to move and I had to shut off the car then restart it to clear the error. On the Ford Forums apparently there are lots of other people who are experiencing this same failure and it is showing up on new and older vehicles as well. Was driving my car and got a message about steering assist came on. Shut the car off because I could not steer it, turned car back on and message went away and it was ok. Had an appointment 12/14 to have my car inspected and an oil change at Carnegie Motors so I told them what happened . I had to get a new tire to pass inspection so had to wait for tht to come in 12/20/21They did their part but called and said it would have to go to the dealership for the steering problem they had removed the battery thinking it would reset itself. Jeff then took it up to Woltz Wind Ford which was about 1 mile up the road - had trouble steering. Because of the holiday and days off they did not get to my car till 12/27 they told me that the Steering Gear box had to be replaced. In researching online I saw that Ford had recalls on 20008 and 2011 for the same problem. My vehicle has41,958 miles on it. Apparently Ford still has the same problem with steering issues The representative just said that parts wear out that I did nothing to cause this problem. I have to get this car repaired to the tune of $2200 plus it is still there will send invoice when I get it. Just glad I was not on the highway when this happened. Definitely a safety issue Obviously the 2013 needed to be recalled as well.

I was attempting to move the vehicle which had been parked on the street in front of my residence into the driveway so it would be out of the way of the scheduled street sweeping. I could typically just reverse right angle the vehicle into the driveway. However, upon reversing the vehicle moved but not according to the way I was steering it. After a few failed attempts, I stopped to assess why this was happening. I know the emergency brake had been released, there were no alerts visible on the dashboard. I got out of the vehicle, no flat tire, nothing appeared different from when I parked the vehicle 36 hours prior. No signs that it had been struck since then. No obstructions behind or under the vehicle. I got back in and tried again. I was able to get it up onto the sidewalk but in a very unintended position. Further attempts did get it partially into the driveway but I nearly hit the picket fence in the front yard in doing so. With it now half on the sidewalk and half in the driveway, I put the brake on satisfied it was now off the street and no longer subject to city parking violation penalty. I had to cancel my work meeting and called the auto club for a tow. During the tow service pick-up, it appeared that the front driver side wheel was not aligning with the steering mechanism but we could manually position the wheel so we could get enough movement and position the vehicle and move it by chain onto the tow truck platform. Prior to parking the vehicle in front of the house, I had driven it without any problems. There was no evidence that it had been damaged or impacted by another vehicle or vandal.

This just so the information is sent in to someone I bought this car used from.day one had problems warranty did not cover anything. First when you would start it it would flash power steering assist fault on the dash you shut car off and restart it goes away. Then the turbo boost sensors keep going I have replaces these three different times find out there is a service bulletin out for it but ford won't fix it for free there is a short in the wire you have to pay out of pocket for. Next was driving down the road and lost all power it went into limp mode while we were driving. The transmission is all messed up in this vehicle it was leaking fluid and took it to a shop to see where and can't find it. There are other electrical issues with the car I have 157k on it

The steering wheel was hard to turn, so I turned the car off and restarted the car. The message was gone and my car’s steering was back to normal. I called the Ford dealership and told them about the problem and they said there is no recall for this problem. My car has barely 64K miles on the odometer. I’ve read many customer complaints about this issue and Ford has done nothing about this. This is a safety concern regarding the loss of power steering and could possibly cause someone to have an accident or even kill someone. I don’t wanna spend thousands of dollars to repair something that should be recalled and be fixed by Ford free of charge.

I was pulling out of my street onto the highway when my power steering went out. No warning lights or anything, just took everything I have (as a young female) to turn it and then pull over. Took it in to the dealership and they said it needs to be replaced and that it happens to these cars. $3,100 to fix it! I had to actually go sifting through the info and settings to find the alert that the steering assist had an issue, it didn’t even tell me. Luckily nobody was immediately behind me on the highway, it could have been really bad. Overall very scary and very unimpressed this has happened to others and Ford hasn’t done anything about it.

I ENCOUNTERED TWO INCIDENTS WHERE MY STEERING WHEEL FROZE. I WAS PARKED AT THIS TIME AND IT CORRECTED ITSELF. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT OCCURRED AGAIN AND I GOT AN ERROR MESSAGE 'POWER STEERING FAILURE.' FORTUNATELY, THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS PARKED. I HAVE SEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS THAT THIS HAPPENED TO OTHERS WHILE THEY WERE DRIVING. I RESEARCHED FURTHER AND THERE WERE RECALLS FOR THIS SAME PROBLEM ON THE 2013 F150, FOCUS AND TAURUS. THIS EXPENSE WAS A HARDSHIP FOR ME AND MY HUSBAND. WE ARE RETIRED AND ON A FIXED INCOME. I CALLED AND SENT A LETTER TO FORD AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THERE WAS NO RECALL. IT WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THE TECH SCANNED THE POWER STEERING MODULE AND FOUND A FAILURE CODE FOR THE STEERING GEAR. THE TECH INSTALLED NEW STEERING GEAR. HE RECOMMENDED IT SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN AND WAS LEFT THERE FOR REPAIR. THE TECH HAD ALSO STATED HE HAS SEEN THIS HAPPEN ALOT BEFORE TO FORD VEHICLES AND WAS SURPRISED IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED. ON WEDNESDAY 2/12/2020, WHILE DRIVING HOME, I DETECTED SUBTLE SIGNS OF STEERING CONTROL IRREGULARITIES AND ATTRIBUTED IT TO ICY ROAD CONDITIONS. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, 2/13/2020, ON MY DRIVE INTO WORK, THE STEERING CONDITION BEGAN TO APPEAR AGAIN AND INTENSIFIED. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE MADE IT TO MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT AND PROMPTLY SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT THE FOLLOWING DAY, FRIDAY 2/14/2020. WHEN I LEFT WORK THAT DAY, I DISCOVERED A COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST TO THE DEGREE THAT IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO SAFELY CONTROL THE CAR. THE EFFORT TO STEER TO ANY NORMAL SAFE DEGREE WAS COMPROMISED AND REQUIRED THAT I ABANDON ANY ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. IF THE SEVERE INTENSITY MANIFESTED ITSELF WHILE DRIVING, THE MOST PROBABLE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISON. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP SATURDAY, 2/15/2020, REQUESTED THEY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, AND EXPRESSED MY ANGER AT A DESIGN FLAW THAT IS LIKELY TO RESULT IN SOMEONE'S DEATH. THEY CALLED ME BACK LATER THAT DAY AND GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF NEAR $2,500 TO REPLACE THE COMPLETE STEERING RACK. I DISCOVERED THROUGH INTERNET SEARCHES, ACTIVE RECALLS OF PRIOR ESCAPE BODY TYPES FOR A SIMILAR FAILURE BUT NONE ON MY YEAR. WHILE DRIVING ON A COUNTY ROAD, MY WIFE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL DISPLAYED A POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE NOTIFICATION. WHEN SHE RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, THE NOTIFICATION WENT AWAY AND THE POWER STEERING RETURNED. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO GREG DARNELL FORD IN MIDWEST CITY, OK FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND WERE TOLD A GEAR ASSEMBLY IN THE STEERING COLUMN HAD GONE BAD (PART NO. HV6Z-3504-CD). THE REPAIR COST IS $2129 AFTER A 10% MILITARY DISCOUNT. THE PROBLEM IS VERY SIMILAR TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN 14V284000 FOR THE 2008-2011 ESCAPE, BUT THE RECALL HAS NOT BEEN EXTENDED TO COVER MORE RECENT MODEL YEARS. FORTUNATELY, MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO BRAKE AND SAFELY EXIT THE ROAD, SHAKEN BUT WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER, HAD SHE BEEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING COULD EASILY HAVE RESULTED IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A POTENTIALLY DEADLY ACCIDENT. SEVERAL OTHERS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE WITH 2013 ESCAPES ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM. WHEN I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY DISMISSED MY CONCERN AND TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO.

I AM CONSTANTLY ADDING COOLANT TO MY ESCAPE. IT HAS BROKEN DOWN / SHUT OFF ON ME TWICE AS A RESULT OF OVERHEATING CAUSED BY LACK OF COOLANT. FORD CLAIMED THE COOLANT LOSS WAS CAUSED BY A SENSOR. SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF A FAULTY SENSOR TRICKING THE ENGINE INTO THINKING IT WAS OVERHEATING AND THE COOLANT WAS BEING DISPERSED TO COOL THE ENGINE. I EXPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED THE CAR IN 2017 WITH 52,000 MILES AND THAT BY SEPTEMBER OF 2017 I WAS ADDING COOLANT. THIS CONTINUE UNTIL OCTOBER 2019 WHEN I FINALLY GOT FED UP AFTER THE VEHICLE POWERED OFF ON ME GOING DOWN HILL AS A RESULT OF 'OVERHEATING' NEEDING MORE COOLANT. I TRIED SHARING THIS INFORMATION WITH MY DEALERSHIP TO NO AVAIL AND MENTIONED PREVIOUS RECALLS ON 2013 1.6L ESCAPE ENGINES THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN BUT MANY OF THE RECALLS INVOLVED COOLANT LEAKS! I ALLOWED FORD TO CONVINCE ME THE $4,000 SENSOR WOULD SOLVE ALL MY PROBLEMS. UNFORTUNATELY ON DECEMBER 3, 2019 LESS THAN TWO MONTHS AFTER THE SENSOR WAS REPAIRED I GOT A MAINTENANCE NOTIFICATION TO ADD COOLANT AND ANOTHER ON JANUARY 20, 2020. IN ADDITION, I WANT TO COMMENT ON THE POWER STEERING DEFAULTING. THIS HAPPENED TO ME AS WELL IN MAY 2019 ON I 85. MY POWER STEERING COMPLETELY WENT OUT AND NEVER RETURNED. PREVIOUSLY IN APRIL A BRIEF POWER STEERING DEFAULT NOTIFICATION APPEARED AND AFTER RESTARTING MY CAR, THE NOTIFICATION WENT AWAY AND POWER STEERING WAS FINE. I AM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER DRIVING VEHICLES WITH OUT POWER STEERING NOT TO BIG A DEAL FOR ME, BUT SOME PEOPLE SAY THERE STEERING LOCKS UP COMPLETELY AND CANT TURN WHEEL. THIS CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS ON THE ROAD AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED, I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE MY WIFE IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE FORD IS NOT FIXING THE ISSUE. THE 2013 ESCAPE WON'T PULL OUT OF A TURN WITHOUT ADDITIONAL FORCE APPLIED OR WILL TRY AND MAKE A TURN ON ITS OWN. ONCE YOU FORCIBLY MAKE IT STRAIGHTEN OUT, IT WORKS FINE. IF I TRADE IT IN AND TELL WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, I WON'T GET ANYTHING FOR THE CAR. IF I DON'T SAY SOMETHING, SOMEONE MAY GET KILLED! THE CAR HAS 37000 MILES. WHILE DRIVING MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE (1.6L ENGINE) ON AN INTERSTATE, I WAS TRAVELING AT 80MPH ON CRUISE CONTROL. SUDDENLY THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS DEACTIVATED AND I FELT A JOLT. I THEN OBSERVED A MESSAGE ON THE DASH WHICH READ ENGINE OVERHEATING, STOP SAFELY. I HAVE ONE REPAIR QUOTE FOR $2000 TO REPAIR THE ENTIRE POWER STEERING RACK AND PINION SYSTEM, OF WHICH WE CANNOT PAY. WE TOOK IT TO 2 OTHER MECHANICS WHO REPORTED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIX IT BECAUSE IT WAS AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM AND HAD TO BE REPROGRAMMED BY THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. FROM MY RESEARCH, THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE FORD HAD WITH THEIR 2008-2011 FORD EXPLORERS.

A VERY SIMILAR, IF NOT EXACT, RECALL WAS DONE ON 2011 AND OLDER YEARS OF THIS SAME VEHICLE. SINCE THIS IS A HIGH SAFETY ISSUE, WHY HASN'T A RECALL BEEN DONE ON THE 2013? I WENT TO GO MOVE MY CAR AFTER I CUT MY GRASS AND INSTANTLY MY POWER STEERING SENSOR WENT OFF AS SOON AS I STARTED MY CAR STATING THAT IT REQUIRED SERVICE DUE TO IT NOT WORKING. JUST LIKE THAT. NO EARLIER WARNINGS, NO MALFUNCTIONS PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, NOTHING. I AM A MOTHER OF 4 DAUGHTERS AND THANKFULLY I WAS JUST TRYING TO REPOSITION MY VEHICLE IN MY YARD VS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AGAIN WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH TOO MANY COMMUNICATION CODES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND WAS TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT DEALER. THE DIAGNOSIS WAS UNKNOWN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO FILE A CASE WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 46,000.

AS IT WAS STILL SAFELY IN MY DRIVEWAY, I PLACED IT IN PARK, SHUT IT OFF, AND OPTED TO USE ANOTHER VEHICLE. THE ESCAPE SAT THERE UNDISTURBED FOR TWO DAYS. THEN, MY HUSBAND TRIED TO USE IT AND UPON STARTING HE NOTICED A WARNING IN THE DISPLAY THAT STATED STEERING ASSIST FAULT. HE OPTED NOT TO USE THE VEHICLE EITHER AS HE ALSO NOTICED THAT IT SEEMED AS IF THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING. I HAVE A CALL INTO A LOCAL DEALER TO TAKE IT IN FOR SERVICE, BUT SEE NO LOGICAL REASON FOR THIS VEHICLE TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH STEERING. IT IS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD AND HAS 30K MILES. I ONLY USE THE VEHICLE TO RUN ERRANDS IN TOWN AND HAVE KEPT UP WITH ROUTINE MAINTENANCE.

ON SEPTEMBER 21, 2016 AROUND 6:30PM, I STARTED THE CAR AND NOTICED THERE WAS NO POWER TO THE STEERING WHEEL. NORMALLY THE STEERING WOULD COMEBACK AFTER ABOUT A MINUTE BUT NOT AT THAT TIME. I WAS RUNNING LATE AND DROPPED MY SON TO HIS ACTIVITY CLASS ABOUT 10 MILES AWAY MY HOME IN THE CITY AREA. THE POWER STEERING DID NOT COME BACK AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRIP THERE AND BACK. I COULD ONLY DRIVE SAFELY AT ABOUT 10 MILES PER HOUR, AND WHEN I NEEDED TO TURN, I HAD TO SLOW TO ABOUT 2 MILES PER HOUR IN ORDER TO MAKE THE TURN SAFELY. THIS WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE SO WHEN I GOT HOME, I ARRANGED AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY TO HAVE THE DEALER LOOK AT THE FAILED POWER STEERING. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS BAD CIRCUIT BOARD IN THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING. IT SEEMS THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE WITH SEVERAL OTHER YEARS WITH THE ESCAPE UP TO 2012. MY ESCAPE IS A 2013 MODEL AND SHOULD ALSO BE A RECALL ITEM. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 3 YEARS, AND IT WAS ONLY 65,000 MILES AT THE TIME. TURNED ON VEHICLE AND POWER STEERING FAULT MESSAGE CAME ON. HAD NO STEERING ASSISTANCE AND TURNING WHEEL EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. TURNED CAR ON/OFF AND IT WENT AWAY. IT DID IT AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER BUT WHILE DRIVING RESIDENTIAL AT 25 MPH IN A NEIGHBORHOOD. STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND TURNED OFF/ON VEHICLE, FAULT WENT AWAY AND STEERING RETURNED. TOOK TO FORD FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIR. WAS TOLD NO FAULTS STORE IN THE POWER STEERING MODULE THEREFORE WARRANTY WILL NOT PAY FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIR. WAS TOLD IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN, DRIVE VEHICLE TO DEALER AND DO NOT TURN OFF. I TOLD THE DEALER THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN AND THEY SHOULD NEVER RECOMMEND TO DRIVE A VEHICLE WITH NO POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE. THE DEALER REFUSED TO DO ANY FURTHER DIAGNOSTICS AND COULD NOT RECOMMEND SAFE FUTURE STEPS. REFUSING TO PAY FOR WARRANTY ON A SYSTEM WITH NO FAULTS THAT DOES NOT STORE FAULT CODES IS UNREASONABLE. THE CAR IS UNSAFE FOR MY WIFE TO OPERATE YET THEY TOOK NO STEPS TO CORRECT CONCERN. THE MODULE PROGRAMMING WAS UPDATED BUT ADVISOR DESCRIBED THE UPDATE AND IT DOES NOT ADDRESS MY ISSUE.

2013 FORD ESCAPE LOST POWER STEERING TWICE ON 9/12/16 WITH THE "STEERING ASSIST FAULT" MESSAGE IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. 1ST TIME HAPPENED 2 MINUTES AFTER START WHILE TURNING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY. 2ND ONE HAPPENED 10 MINUTES AFTER START WHILE DRIVING. IF THIS HAPPENS DURING DRIVING IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!! YOU LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE WOULD HAVE CRASHED FOR SURE. NOW FORD IS SAYING IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY ONCE AND HAS NOT GONE OUT AGAIN IN 1 YEAR! DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE CAUSE AS A INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE PSCM (POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE) AND REPLACED THE PSCM AND RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY TO REPAIR. PLEASE NOTE THAT EARLIER MODEL YEAR FORD ESCAPES HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND HAVE BEEN RECALLED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 AND FORD RECALL NUMBER 14S05. AS THIS ISSUE IS IDENTICAL TO THE PRIOR RECALL, I STRONGLY SUGGEST ADDING THE 2013 MODEL YEAR FORD ESCAPE VEHICLES TO THE RECALL. THE MOST COMMON TIME FOR THE POWER STEERING TO FAIL WAS RIGHT AFTER STARTUP AND MANEUVERING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT ON A CITY STREET OR GARAGE. AT THIS LOW SPEED MANUAL STEERING IS DIFFICULT AND AGGRESSIVE BRAKING IS REQUIRED TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT ONCE THE INABILITY TO SETTER IS APPARENT TO THE DRIVER. ONCE THE STEERING FAILS AND THE FAULT MESSAGE APPEARS, IT COULD BE OCCASIONALLY RESET BY SHUTTING DOWN THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING THE CAR. TURNING OFF A CAR ON A PUBLIC ROAD TO REGAIN STEERING CONTROL IS UNDESIRABLE AND UNSAFE. I SPOKE WITH BOTH FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND BOTH CLAIMED THAT THERE ARE NO TSBS OR RECALLS DESCRIBING THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING FOR THE 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE REPAIR INVOICE (ATTACHED) SHOWS THAT THE DEALERSHIP VERIFIED THE FAILURE OF THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE (AS IN PRIOR RECALLS OF EARLIER MODEL YEARS) AND THE NEED TO REPLACE THE PSCM AND ENTIRE PSCM/RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY. THE MILEAGE AT THE TIME OF REPAIR WAS 45281. THE FAULT OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY AT EARLIER MILEAGES AND BECAME MORE FREQUENT WITH INCREASING MILEAGE UP UNTIL THE TIME OF REPAIR TO TO SAFETY CONCERNS.

ON 10-10-2015, OUR 2013 FORD ESCAPE 4WD STARTED DISPLAYING AN ABS ERROR CODE, ALONG WITH A TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ERROR AND A "HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE" ERROR MESSAGE, SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE ABS BRAKES WOULD ENGAGE AT LOW TRAVEL SPEED. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, WHO DETERMINED THAT A REAR WHEEL SENSOR HAD FAILED. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR TWO WEEKS AND RETURNED IT ON 10-21-2015. IT HAD 24,273 MILES ON IT. NOW, 3 WEEKS LATER, ON 10-16-2015, THE VERY SAME PROBLEM HAS RECURRED, WITH THE DASH LIGHTS DISPLAYING FOR THE ABS SYSTEM FAILURE, THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM FAILURE AND THE "HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE". THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGES AT LOW SPEEDS CAUSING THE BRAKES TO GRAB, RENDERING THE CAR UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THIS CAR IS A 'LEMON' IN OUR OPINION, AS IT HAS HAD 5 MAJOR BREAKDOWNS, INCLUDING A MAJOR ENGINE PROBLEM AT 720 MILES, A FAILURE OF THE AIR BAG CONTROLLER, TWO PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS SYSTEM, AS DOCUMENTED HEREIN, AND TWO RECALLS RELATED TO THE ENGINE POTENTIALLY CATCHING ON FIRE DUE TO A FUEL LEAK (A RECALL, FOLLOWED BY A RECALL TO FIX THE RECALL). I SINCERELY BELIEVE THAT THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS AND HAVE ASKED THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY TO BUY BACK THIS VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES, BUT THEY HAVE REFUSED TO DO SO. I FEAR THAT MY WIFE AND I ARE NOT SAFE WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF DEFECTS ON THIS ONE PARTICULAR VEHICLE. FORD STATED THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT HAVE NOT YET ISSUED A RECALL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT MORNING. I WAS TOLD THE STEERING BOX HAD FAILED. THE COST IS $1800. I CALLED FORD DIRECTLY AND LET THEM KNOW I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR, EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I LET THEM KNOW I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PAY FOR ANY REPAIRS DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, BUT THIS ISSUE IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR AND FORD IS AWARE OF A PROBLEM. FORD OFFERED TO PAY $600 OF THE $1800. THEY KEEP TELLING ME TO KEEP MY RECEIPT AND THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME THE REST, IF A RECALL IS ISSUED. I DRIVE 100 MILES PER DAY TO AND FROM WORK. IF MY STEERING HAD FROZEN 2 HOURS EARLIER ON THAT DAY, I QUITE POSSIBLY COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED. HOW DO YOU CONTROL AN SUV GOING 70 MPH WITHOUT ANY STEERING? BOTH TIMES I GOT A MESSAGE ACROSS MY INFORMATION SCREEN THAT SAID "STEERING ASSIST FAULT". IT WAS REALLY HARD TO STEER THE VEHICLE I WAS ABLE TO STOP AND TURN OFF THE VEHICLE SINCE I WASN'T ON A BUSY STREET EITHER TIME. WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE THE MESSAGE WENT AWAY AND POWER STEERING WAS RESTORED AS IF THE COMPUTER JUST NEEDED TO RESTART. *TR

WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH ON MAY 21, 2014 I SUDDENLY HEARD A CHIME AND A MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER ALERTING OF A "STEERING ASSIST FAULT". OUR FORD IS EQUIPPED WITH THE AUTOMATIC PARKING STEERING ASSIST SYSTEM. I THEN FELT THE STEERING LOCK UP AND DRAMATICALLY REDUCE THE ABILITY FOR ME TO STEER THE VEHICLE FROM ONE LANE TO THE OTHER ON THE STRAIGHT AWAY THAT I WAS PRESENTLY ON. THE SENSATION WAS THAT OF TRYING TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT COMPLETELY LOST POWER STEERING AND FEEDBACK. AFTER APPROXIMATELY A QUARTER MILE OF EVALUATING THE VEHICLE, I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE CAR, THUS REGAINING NORMAL CONTROL WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT, AND PROCEEDED TO DELIVER THE VEHICLE FOR EVALUATION. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT LINDSAY FORD IN SILVER SPRING, MD NOW AND WILL BE EVALUATED 5/22/14. THIS IS AT LEAST THE THIRD TIME I HAVE SEEN THIS FAULT MESSAGE, HOWEVER IT WOULD APPEAR WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE BUT NEVER ELIMINATE STEERING ABILITY. I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE TO BE A LEMON IN THE EYES OF THE LAW, I HAVE PREVIOUSLY REQUESTED A BUY BACK FROM FORD BASED ON DISMAL FUEL PERFORMANCE AND OTHER UNRELATED MATTERS. FORD HAS NEGLECTED TO FULLY RESOLVE THOSE MATTERS, AND WITH THIS INCIDENT ON HAND, I AM REQUESTING ANY ASSISTANCE TO ENSURE THAT I OWN A SAFE VEHICLE, BECAUSE MY PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE WITH FORD HAS BEEN UNACCEPTABLE. *TR

DRIVER WAS PROCEEDING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND HIT SEVERAL PARKED VEHICLES. THE DRIVER COMPLAINED THAT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL THE SECONDS PRIOR TO IMPACT. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP BY THE TOW TRUCK AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WAS VISIBLE, THE POINT OF FAILURE WAS QUITE APPARENT. THE BALL JOINT REMAINED COMPLETELY INTACT WHILE THE STEERING KNUCKLE VISIBLY BROKE AT THE POINT WHERE IT MEETS THE BALL JOINT. EVERY OTHER ITEM UNDER THE VEHICLE WAS VISIBLY RIPPED OR BENT EXCEPT THE STEERING KNUCKLE. IT APPEARS AS IF THE STEERING KNUCKLE MATERIAL IS NOT THICK ENOUGH FOR A STRUCTURAL COMPONENT. AT THE POINT OF FAILURE, THE METAL IS APPROXIMATELY 5/16" THICK. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATE THAT WHILE DRIVING 15 MPH, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILED, CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO AN UNDISCLOSED OBJECT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING INSPECTION OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 750.
