I was driving on the road when the steering started to get stuck, it got hard to move it, I got the warning on the car about a steering fault, stop safely. fortunately I was able to pull over with no risk, I had to call tow, but it could have caused an accident.

The power steering assist has begun to randomly stop working. It has happened 3 times. The first time it happened was as soon as I started the car to move it. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it worked. 5 starts later the same problem occurred and I was able to restart the car and it worked. Approximately 7 starts after that the power steering assist stopped working again, but this time it was not as soon as the vehicle was started. This time it went out mid turn as I began turning onto the road. Each time the warning came up on the dash after the steering became difficult. The power steering assist randomly going out while driving puts the safety of myself, my passengers, and other cars at risk for a crash from the sudden change in ability to steer the vehicle. At this time the vehicle has not been taken into a service center because it is not a consistent problem and if they don't find the problem on the first try they will charge a diagnostic fee to tell me that "everything is fine" or "we can't find the problem" and I am not willing to pay them money for no work. Once was a fluke, twice was a coincidence, three times is a problem that makes this vehicle unsafe to drive. Ford has had a recall on previous model years for this same issue.

Steering assist fault. Power steering freezes when car starts. Steering wheel is locked so you are stuck wherever you parked your car. Cannot turn wheels. Very finnicky youtube tutorials to get it “fixed” after 30+ minutes of restarting the vehicle. This is the second time this has happened to me in this car.

2014 Ford Escape Power Steering failure while on the interstate in fast moving and heavy traffic. Almost caused a pile up and barely got out of the way of a semi truck going 70 or more mph to the safety of the edge of interstate. The power steering had been working fine. Until a couple days prior to the incident, I cranked it up and it seemed like it was in manual steering mode. I cut it off re cranked it and it was fine. So i thought just a randon glitch when starting it. Always loved and relied and trusted ford vehicles until the incident on the interstate. I got it off the interstate cut it off and started it again, it was no longer power steering and felt it was in manual steering mode all the way on the back roads getting it home. I contacted Ford and told them of the problem, they instantly said they had repared vehicles and also numerous complaints on this problem and that there was not a recall on it, only on vehicles up to 2012. Then after further research I found tons of folks who were experiencing the same problem and some in the process of lawsuits or in process of filing one against Ford for the problem. I ask on line and researched others complaints about their experience, for some it was just the battery, so I replaced it with a new battery, it was not the problem and soon after had someone put a scanner on it and it shows the electric steering rack as the error. the dealership when called about the part stated that Ford had several problems with the steering part, that the system had a faulty boot which would allow water to get into the electric steering component and basically fry the board. The solution Ford has for it is not to do anything about it in numerous vehicles having the same faulty parts is to sell you a corrected part and charge you around $4000/labor? Really? You are getting sued and you are telling others to repair it with another probably faulty part again? Should I sue for the repairs? Can they be forced to recall?

The electronic power steering system failed while driving. We were unable to steer the vehicle and barely avoided a collision. The vehicle is undriveable. We contacted Ford and they have refused to help with repairs even though Ford has issued recalls for other vehicles about the same problem.

Power assist steering wheel failure. My power steering stop working suddenly and I was not able to move my car. There is a recall for power steering problems from 2008/2013 for the same issues as my SUV. My SUV only has 33,000 miles on it. I think Ford didn't stop using faulty parts in their 2014 models. I spend over $3200 for repairs. I would like to see if I have any recourse as I believe my Ford Should had been included in the recall.

1) Steering went out without having issues prior. It reads "steering assist fault service required" on the dash 2) Lost all steering capabilities without warning. The car did not lose all power, it was still running and driving just zero steering. I drive daily with my children in the vehicle most of the time. This time, thankfully, I was alone and not in traffic to harm other drivers. Steering does not work at all, it's not just hard to turn, there's no movement in the wheel no matter how hard you try. 3) It has been checked out by our mechanic and he states "the code reader brings up nothing, no loose wires, tried resetting the battery, it doesn't have power steering fluid that could even be low, but there are cars recalled 2011-2013 with the exact same issue but this is a 2014" 4) It has not been checked by the dealer or manufacturer yet. 5) There were zero warnings. After the incident, a light came on the dash reading "steering assist fault service required"

Amongst SEVERAL problems with this vehicle, it often slips out of gear while driving. Which has caused me to have to stop in the middle of the lane. It has had multiple mega fuses go out. It will often say “power steering fault” and then the message will go away. I am genuinely scared to drive this vehicle because I never know when the power system is going to go out. I have always stayed up to date on maintenance and it has less than 90k on miles. I do not understand why this has not been pulled off the market. It seems like all the escapes before mine were pulled for the same issues.

Car was in perfectly good condition around 75,000 miles. but the power steering gave out in the middle of driving on the highway. I first noticed it becoming a bit harder to turn the wheel but within an hour it became almost impossible to turn. Was charged $2,500 to fix since I was told it was an electrical problem. I did get a notification on the dashboard that there was a "power steering assist failure" or "steering fault."

Steering assist fault: Service requied light came on. Steering wheel hard to turn. Steering wheel system is electrical and cannot use power steering fluid to receitfy the problem. Towed vehicle to nearest Ford dealership to repair the issue. Diagnostic test ($170) is being conducted to determine the issue. I research the internet and most complainents indicated the steering rack need to be replaced. Cost range, very costly. The contact has stated that their vehicle is not included in the recall because it only includes MY 2013 Ford Escapes. The diagnostic test determined that a new power steering rack was needed but the part was on backorder. No assistance from Ford has been offered.

At mileage 56,449 alert came on "steering assist failure" and I had no power steering. I drove directly to Coconut Point Ford in Estero, Fl. 10/31/2022. Part was on backorder throughout the U.S. I was able to pick up my repaired auto on 11/18. Forums have mentioned multiple issues with this model with power steering but as of yet no recall for the 2014 Escape. Total bill 3,250.17 and 350.00 car rental.

Did not cause a diagnostic code. Searched online and many issues with this vehicle. Ford says nothing is wrong. Someone will get hurt if this is not fixed. The amount of people having this issue is a manufacture defect and should be fixed as such.

Initially the only problem I had was the back up camera. It kept disconnecting, with a failure (error) code. Soon Afterwards, The vehicle loss all power steering abilities. The tires have been replaced with new tires. The vehicle locked up when parked and I was unable to move it when in drive. I called for assistance from a towing company. They inflated my tires. I took the vehicle to a certified mechanic. They were unable to resolve the issue. They said they couldn’t find them problem. Today, I (just) returned from an out of state vacation with my 2 grandchildren in tow, and loss power steering again while going down a steep and curvy mountain side. I found a pullout, parked and I called my daughter to come pick up the kids (several hours away) for their safety. I also had my husband assist me with handling and driving the vehicle with out power steering. Again several hours away. The Mountains & cliffs were a threat and a danger to all of us on the road. So we worked through a plan of push & pull. I’ve reported the problem multiple times to the local FORD dealership & manufacture with no positive response or suggestions. The vehicle is a 2014 with only 52,722 miles. I need help, please.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Rack and Pinion Gear Assembly. Yes, but already inspected by Ford Dealership. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Stopped to get gas while on a trip, when turned the engine on, the steering wheel would not turn. It was completely locked with no prior warning. If this had happened on the interstate, I could have wrecked with children in the vehicle. I am not even sure I would have been able to turn the wheel to pull off to the side of the road. VERY dangerous. Had to be towed 24miles to closest Ford dealership and spent the night in a strange town as everything was closed and couldn't get rental as the supply was low in the tiny town. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, dealer service center confirmed problem and informed me it would cost $3K to fix on my 2014 Ford Escape, which only has 54K miles on it. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, by Ford's service center, where the vehicle is being repaired. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning until after the problem occurred. The reading stated, "Steering Assist Fault Service Required" when I started my car to a locked steering wheel.

I MUST STOP THE CAR, PLACE IT IN PARK, SHUT IT OFF, WAIT A FEW MINUTES THAN RESTART IT. SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON. THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 55 AND 65 MPH ON THE MAJOR FREEWAY WHERE THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT IS UP TO 70 MPH, 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC. A DAY LATER AFTER RESEARCHING THE ISSUE I THROW A HAIL MARY AND DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FOR ABOUT A MINUTE AND THEN RECONNECTED IT AND BINGO I HAVE STEERING. MY WIFE LATER LEFT FOR SHOPPING AND HAD ZERO ISSUES UNTIL HER ATTEMPT TO LEAVE. SHE IMMEDIATELY GOT THE ERROR MESSAGE AND HAD INTERMITTENT POWER STEERING ON HER DRIVE HOME BUT WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT WITH THE USE OF BRUTE FORCE. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION AND RECALL ADDRESSED ABOUT TWO TO THREE MONTHS AGO AND THIS CAR HAS BEEN A PAIN SINCE THEN WITH NEEDING A JUMP IN COLD WEATHER. SO I HAD THE RECALL INSTALLED, NOT LONG AFTER I STARED HAVING ISSUES WITH LOSSING COOLANT. NEXT IF STARED MISSING WELL I TOOK IT IN AND THE DEALER SAID "YOU HAVE A CRACKED ENGINE BLOCK" WHEN ASK TO PROVE THE BLOCK WAS CRACKED THEY COULD NOT, AND THE DEALER ALSO TOLD ME THAT, "THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE ENGINE EVEN IF ITS ONLY A HEAD" SO FORD IS MAKING TO WHERE THE COSTUMER IS RESPONSABLE FOR REPLACING THE ENGINE. THEN AFTER I GOT MY CAR BACK 2 MONTHS LATER, MY STREERING HAD A CATCH OCCASIONALLY THEN STARTED LOCKING UP COMPLETELY AND HAPPEND TO BE STATIONARY OR VERY LOW SPEEDS WHEN IT DID LOCK UP. SO I TAKE IT BACK TO FORD DEALER AGAIN THEY SAY I HAVE TO PAY FOR EVERY THING SO WHEN I GO TO DO THE WORK MYSELF I DESCOVIORED THEY COMPLETLY LEFT OF THE SHROUD UNDER THE CAR THAT CHANNALS COLD AIR BETWEEN THE EXHUST AND ELECTRONIC STEERING GEAR. THANKFULLY THE STEERING FAILURES HAPPENED WHEN I WAS EITHER IN THE PROCESS OF PARKING OR ALREADY PARKED.

I HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO TAKE IT TO THE SHOP IN A FEW DAYS BECAUSE WHEN SWITCHING GEARS OR ACCELERATING AFTER VEHICLE IS STOPPED IT JOLTS/FEELS LIKE IT'S TRYING HARDER THAN IT SHOULD HAVE TO FOR BEING SUCH A NEW VEHICLE, AND HAVEN'T EVEN OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR A MONTH. IT'S VERY UPSETTING TO JUST GET A NEW TO ME CAR AND HAVE AN UNAVOIDABLE ACCIDENT. IT'S CURRENTLY AT THE SERVICE SHOP. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED BUT BOTH VEHICLES ARE BADLY DAMAGED. THIS ISN'T THE FIRST COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THERE'S MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS JUST THIS YEAR. I HAVE A FEELING AS TIME GOES ON AND VEHICLES HIT BETWEEN 50-80 THOUSAND MILES THE ISSUE WILL BECOME MORE APPARENT. OVER A WEEK LATER, THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE EPAS HAD FAILED. THERE ARE RECALLS ON OTHER VEHICLES FROM THIS YEAR, FORD REFUSED TO TAKE COMPLETE RESPONSIBILITY WHEN WE HAD CALLED IN TO COMPLAIN. THE DEALERSHIP ACKNOWLEDGED THERE WERE ISSUES, AND SAID THEY COULD HAVE IT FIXED THE NEXT DAY. AFTER AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM FORD, TWO DAYS LATER, THE DEARLER WAS OUT OF RACKS TO MAKE THE REPAIR. WE DID NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE BACK UNTIL ALMOST A MONTH LATER AND OVER $600 (FORD COVERED THE REPLACEMENT RACK BUT WOULD NOT PAY LABOR). UPON INVESTIGATING, WE FOUND THAT THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION BROUGHT UP IN CALIFORNIA THAT NEVER GAINED ENOGH MOMENTUM FOR FORD TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY THEY SHOULD HAVE.

VEHICLE WAS TOWED IN AFTER ISSUE OCCURING 4X IN A 2 MILE DRIVE. VEHICLE WAS TOWED IN. ADVISED BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. AFTER 30 DAYS THEY RETURNED THE CAR WITH 75 MILES TEST DRIVEN AND SHOWED THAT THE TECH RESET THE COMPUTER MODULE PRIOR TO DUPLICATING THE ISSUE. THE SERVICE MANAGER HAD ME "RESET" THE VEHICLE BY DRIVING IT. WHILE DRIVING 55MPH THE ISSUE REOCCURRED AT 100 MILES AFTER THE SYSTEM RESET. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND WAS TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER A WEEK THEY WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE "SOME" BUT NOT ALL OF THE ISSUES. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE GENERAL MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP THEY DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE BACK BY PAYING OFF THE EXISTING LOAN IN EXCHANGE FOR PURCHASING A 2018 FORD ESCAPE.

THE WARNING SENSOR NO LONGER APPEARED. I RESEARCHED THIS HAPPENING TO THE SAME VEHICLE MODEL AND IT SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE FORD ESCAPE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CRASH CAUSING PROBLEM AND DRIVERS NEED TO BE ON HIGH ALERT FOR THIS POTENTIAL PROBLEM.
