MY CAR AT TIMES WILL GIVE A HARD START. TURNING, BUT NOT FULLY TURNING OVER OR GIVES OFF A SOUND THAT I CAN ONLY DESCRIBE AS AN ELEPHANT TRUMPETING. WHEN IT DOES START AT TIMES IT WILL SHUT COMPLETELY OFF JUST AS FAST. IT HESITATES TO PICK UP ADEQUATE SPEED AND WILL STUMBLE OR JERK, AND WHEN PUT IN REVERSE IT WILL COMPLETELY STALL OUT. I'VE HAD A NEW BATTERY INSTALLED, AND THE SPARK PLUGS AND BOOTS HAVE BEEN CHANGED, BUT TO NO AVAIL.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE VEHICLE SPUTTERED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS APPLIED AND THEN STALLED WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF THE ENGINE FAIL SAFE LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS AND WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO STATED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, HOWEVER THE VEHICLE STILL SPUTTERED INTERMITTENTLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000.

WHILE SETTING AT A STOP LIGHT A WARNING MESSAGE CAME ON ABOUT CHECKING ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL. WHEN I RELEASE THE BRAKE TO ACCELERATE WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN I COASTED INTO THE INTERSECTION ONLY TO FIND THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDDLE HAD NO RESPONSE. FORTUNATELY THE ENGINE IDLE WAS ENOUGH TO GET ME THROUGH THE INTERSECTION BEFORE THE LIGHT TURNED RED. I THEN COASTED TO THE NEAREST PARKING LOT AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. RESTARTED THE VEHICLE WITH NO CHANGE IN ACCELERATOR PEDDLE RESPONSE. AFTER DOING RESEARCH AND SEEING NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE I SEE I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE NOT BEEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WHEN THIS ISSUE HAPPEN. AFTER STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE WITHOUT THE PEDAL BEING PUSHED. THE FOOT BRAKE WAS APPLIED WITH INCREASING FORCE TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM GOING INTO THE INTERSECTION. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEMS THAT CAN CAUSE ACCIDENTS AND GET PEOPLE KILLED. THIS ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL/BODY NEEDS TO BE RE-ENGINEERED AND A RECALL ISSUED FOR THIS PRODUCT. TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE AND RESTARTING IT SEEMED TO "RESET" THE THROTTLE CONTROL. I DO NOT TRUST THAT IT WILL BE SAFE TO USE, PARTICULARLY WITH THE WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS THAT I ENCOUNTER. BOTH CASES HAPPENED WHILE TURNING THROUGH A MAJOR INTERSECTION, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN, BUT THERE WAS NO CONNECTION BETWEEN THE GAS PEDAL AND THE THROTTLE (STEPPING ON THE GAS HAD NO EFFECT). LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND ONTO THE SHOULDER WITHOUT GETTING HIT. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS IN DEC 2011, AND IT JUST HAPPENED AGAIN THIS MORNING (1 OCT 2012), LUCKILY I WAS DRIVING AND SAFELY MANEUVERED OUT OF HARM'S WAY. IF IT HAD BEEN MY WIFE AND CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE, OR IF IT HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY, IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF THIS SAME FAILURE ON THE INTERNET. WHILE BEING DRIVEN AT HIGHWAY SPEED THROTTLE STUCK IN FULLY DEPRESSED POSITION AFTER BEING ENGAGED FOR A ROUTINE PASS OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS NOTED TO ACCELERATE. ACCELERATOR PEDAL COULD NOT BE RETURNED TO NON-DEPRESSED STATE WHEN FORCE APPLIED. BRAKES APPLIED FORCEFULLY, VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE SLOWED OR BROUGHT TO A STOP. STRONG SMELL OF "BURNING" BRAKE PADS WAS NOTED. ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT VEHICLE INTO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION POSITION OF NEUTRAL. NO CHANGE IN ENGINE SPEED NOTED. TRANSMISSION THEN SHIFTED INTO REVERSE. VEHICLE WHEELS LOCKED UP AND VEHICLE SKIDDED APPROXIMATELY 100 - 150 FEET BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. ANTILOCK SYSTEM AND OTHER SYSTEMS DID NOT ACTIVATE. AFTER COMING TO A STOP, THROTTLE PEDAL WAS INSPECTED. NO INTERIOR INTERFERENCE FROM FLOOR MATS OR OTHER MATERIALS NOTED. OPERATOR IS 100% CERTAIN AS A RESULT OF "REAL-TIME" VISUAL CONFIRMATION, THAT ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS WERE NOT MISTAKENLY ENGAGED OR DUALLY ENGAGED. CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT ENGAGED. VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED AND MAINTAINED REGULARLY AND WITH PRECISION AND DETAIL. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC IMMEDIATELY POST THE INCIDENT. THROTTLE BODY FOUND TO BE FOULED AND DIRTY. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC IS REASONABLY CERTAIN THAT DIRTY THROTTLE BODY IS MOST LIKELY CAUSE OF THIS EVENT. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE (INCIDENT #5), THE CAR WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH SOUTH ON 14TH ST NW IN WASHINGTON, DC, WHEN THE CAR LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE, AND THE "CHECK ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL" WARNING APPEARED IN THE DASHBOARD MESSAGE CENTER. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN AT SPEEDS OF 55+ MPH AS WELL AS SPEEDS OF APPROX LESS THAN 10 MPH, SUCH AS WHILE IN A PARKING LOT. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN THE SUMMER OF 2009, AND HAS HAPPENED EVERY MONTH SINCE, SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES DURING THE MONTH. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HAVE IT TESTED AND WERE TOLD IT WAS A TPS SENSOR. THAT HAS BEEN REPLACED ($75.00) BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL HAPPENING. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS AND IT IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 EXPEDITIONS. I PERSONALLY KNOW OF 2 OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED, ONE OF WHICH HAS HAD IT REPLACED TWICE NOW. THIS IS A HUGE CONCERN SINCE YOU DO LOOSE ALL POWER AND HAVE TO TRY TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, WHILE TRYING TO AVOID BEING HIT BY OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. MY CONCERN IS THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE RESULT WILL BE A ACCIDENT WHILE TRYING TO GET THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE REPAIR COST FOR JUST THE PARTS IS $600.00, BUT THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE LABOR. FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THIS PART BEFORE SOMEONE DOES DIE OR IS SERIOUSLY INJURED, AS IT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD EXPEDITION. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH THE CHECK ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL, AND THEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. HE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY RESTART THE VEHICLE TO RESUME NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE NO RECALLS THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED. I HAVE RESEARCHED THROUGH THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS IN REFERENCE TO THIS SAME ISSUE WITH SOME INVOLVING ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE INADVERTENT LOSS OF POWER. I HAVE CONTACTED THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY WILL ONLY TELL ME THAT THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO COVER THIS. I WORK CLOSE TO HOME AND HAVE LIMITED DRIVING DISTANCE. ON THE WAY HOME, THE THROTTLE WENT COMPLETELY OUT AND THE VEHICLE CUT OFF ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS UNABLE TO BE RESTARTED AND HAD TO BE TOWED. MY LOCAL DEALER DID FIX IT IN A TIMELY MANNER. HOWEVER...THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PROBLEM. WE BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW AND WITHIN A MONTH THE FUEL INJECTOR WENT OUT WHEN I WAS COMING BACK HOME FROM OUT OF TOWN, MY DRIVERS SIDE SEAT ADJUSTMENT WENT OUT TWICE AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. I AM SHORT AND HAD TO DRIVE WITH MY SEAT ALL THE WAY BACK. 2 CAM PHASERS HAD TO BE REPLACED BACK IN THE SUMMER AND THEN MOST RECENTLY THIS. I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND WOULD PREFER A DEPENDABLE VEHICLE. I FILED A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH FORD AND HEARD FROM THEM TODAY OF WHICH I WAS TOLD THAT HAVING 49,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE IT WAS NOT UNUSUAL FOR PARTS TO GO BAD. I LIVE ON A HARD SURFACE ROAD AND DRIVE TO WORK, NORMAL DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES AND OF COURSE VACATION. THE ONLY THING THEY WOULD DO WAS UPGRADE MY WARRANTY TO COVER THE TRANSMISSION. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AS IF CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. THE CONTACT TRIED TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL HARDER UNTIL IT GOES AWAY. THERE WAS NO WARNING SIGNAL PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE PROBLEMS PERSISTED INTERMITTENTLY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE SERVICE DEALER WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE SECOND TIME, THE SERVICE DEALER ADJUSTED THE CALIBRATION FOR A TEMPORARY REMEDY. AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER, WHO INSTALLED A FLIGHT RECORD BOX. THE CONTACT KEPT THE FLIGHT RECORD BOX FOR TWO WEEKS AND RETURNED TO THE SERVICE DEALER BUT THE READINGS COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SIX SEPARATE TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND DID NOT OFFERED ANY RESOLUTION.

I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION AT CRAIG AND I-15. THIS IS KNOWN TO HAVE A GREEN LIGHT, YET THE TRAFFIC WILL SUDDENLY STOP INSTEAD OF A STEADY FLOW. I WAS DRIVING MY FORD EXPEDITION THAT I PURCHASED LESS THAN 2 WEEKS BEFORE. SUDDENLY THE TRAFFIC STOPPED, I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I NOTICED THAT MY VEHICLE DID NOT STOP. I ENDED UP HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I GOT CITED FOR GOING TOO FAST FOR THE CONDITION OF THE TRAFFIC. AT THAT TIME I DID NOT NOTICE A PROBLEM WITH THE PEDALS, ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE HAVE A CONFLICT. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW TO ME, I DID NOT NOTICE THE PROBLEM UNTIL A MONTH LATER, ALTHOUGH I QUESTIONED HOW I COULD HAVE THIS COLLISION AFTER SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES AS I DID. AFTER THE VEHICLE GOT OUT OF THE SHOP, I WAS DRIVING IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. I APPLIED THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN AND NOTICED THE ACCELERATION INCREASING. IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED THAT I WAS PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDAL AT THE SAME TIME. I AM 6'3" TALL WITH A 11 1/2 IN SHOE.
