The contact owns a 2006 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at a low rate of speed, the vehicle would independently accelerate upon depression of the accelerator pedal without warning. During a recent failure, the contact crashed into a fence as part of the fence had become wedged underneath the vehicle. After placing the vehicle into park and exiting the vehicle, the wheels continued to move. The air bags did not deploy upon impact. Despite minor soreness to his neck, no medial attention was required. A police report was not filed. Despite the failure, the contact managed to restart the vehicle and safely to his destination. The fence sustained severe damage as a result of the failure. The dealer nor the manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000.

TL* THE CONTACT CALLED ON BEHALF OF THE OWNER OF A 2006 FORD EXPEDITION. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THERE WAS AN ODOR OF ANTIFREEZE IN THE VEHICLE. ADDITIONALLY, THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE SWITCH BECAME INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND CYLINDER HEAD TEMPERATURE SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 245,000.

WHILE IN TRAFFIC, AT LEAST 100 TIMES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS (AT VARIABLE SPEEDS FROM 5 TO 65 MPH ON CITY STREETS AND FREEWAYS) MOST RECENTLY TWICE IN THE LAST WEEK, THE RPMS DROP BELOW 500 AND THE VEHICLE DIES AND "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" LIGHTS UP ON THE DASH. I HAVE TO EITHER COAST TO PULL OVER OR DEAD STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAVE TO TURN THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY OFF (EVEN THOUGH IN FAILSAFE MODE ENGINE IS OFF, THE ELECTRONICS ARE STILL ON) AND THEN RESTART AND THEN IT WILL DRIVE JUST FINE UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. IT HAPPENS ANYWHERE FROM ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS TO 6 TIMES IN 1 WEEK. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH IF I DRIVE WITH BOTH FEET IN TRAFFIC AND MAINTAIN ABOUT 800-1000 RMPS AT ALL TIMES IT DOESN'T DO THIS, HOWEVER THIS CANNOT BE DONE ALL THE TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN TRYING TO STOP THE LARGE VEHICLE QUICKLY OR TURNING IN AN INTERSECTION. NOTHING HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED BY DEALERSHIP AS NO CODES ARE THROWN. I ALSO OWN A OBD2 READER AND NO CODES HAVE EVER LISTED UNLESS ITS TIME TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS. SEVERAL DIFFERENT MECHANICS, FORUMS AND BRAINSTORMING HAS NOT FIGURED IT OUT. I HAVE REPLACED MOSTLY EVERYTHING WITH EXCEPTION TO A NEW TRANSMISSION AND COMPUTER. MOSTLY EVERYTHING INCLUDING WIRES AND VACUUM LINES AND GASKETS HAVE BEEN REPLACED DUE TO MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS FROM EVERYTHING ELSE THAT HAS GONE WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE PUT ABOUT $10K INTO NEW PARTS FOR THIS VEHICLE. I BOUGHT IT WITH 60K MILES ON IT AND IT NOW HAS 117K, ITS A DAILY DRIVER WITH 28 MILES OF TRAVEL 5 DAYS A WEEK. ALSO THE ONLY VEHICLE THAT FITS ALL OF THE CHILDREN FOR SOCCER, TRACK AND VOLLEYBALL TRAVELING TOURNAMENTS/GAMES. LUCKILY IT DOESN'T HAPPEN VERY OFTEN WHEN I'M NOT IN TRAFFIC SO THE KIDS AREN'T USUALLY WITH ME BUT IT IS VERY SCARY NOT TO KNOW IF YOU ARE GOING TO STOP OR IF THE PEOPLE BEHIND YOU ARE GOING TO HIT YOU OR NOT.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH WHEN MY ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN. THERE WAS A BEEP AND A LIGHT CAME ON THAT SAID "ENGINER FAIL SAFE MODE". THE ENGINE SHUT OFF, BUT LUCKILY I STILL HAD FULL MOVEMENT OF MY STEERING WHEEL SO I WAS ABLE TO CHANGE LANES AND GET OFF TO THE SHOULDER. I PANICKED FOR A MOMENT, BUT STARTED THE CAR AND IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP. I ATTEMPTED MY DRIVE TO WORK AND MADE IT THERE. NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE PROBLEM, BUT I'M SCARED TO DRIVE IT ANYMORE. ESPECIALLY WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AND MY HUSBAND IS OUT OF TOWN FOR WORK. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.

FIRST OCCURRENCE EXHIBITED FLICKERING DASHBOARD LIGHTS BEFORE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT COMPLETELY DEAD AND THE ENGINE QUIT WHILE ACCELERATING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH. PUT VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART ENGINE NORMALLY BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL SHORT INSTANCES OF DASH FLICKERING OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS WITH NO APPARENT ENGINE PROBLEMS. DURING THAT SAME PERIOD THERE HAVE BEEN APPROXIMATELY 4 INSTANCES OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BEING COMPLETELY DEAD UPON THE INITIAL ATTEMPT TO START THE ENGINE. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE ONLY LIGHT THAT IS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH (OR ANYWHERE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER) IS WHAT I THINK IS THE AIRBAG LIGHT; HOWEVER, NORMAL ELECTRICAL POWER HAS, THUS FAR, RE-APPEARED WITHIN 5 MINUTES AND THE ENGINE THEN STARTS AND RUNS NORMALLY. YESTERDAY THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL A CODE OF P0119 (ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE CIRCUIT INTERMITTENT) UPON RETURNING HOME. I SUBSEQUENTLY CLEARED THE CODE, BUT THE READER INDICATES ANOTHER CODE IS "PENDING". I BELIEVE THIS IS A SYMPTOM OF A LARGER PROBLEM. I HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED A "ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE" WARNING MESSAGE, BUT THIS COMPLAINT IS VERY SIMILAR TO MANY OTHERS ALREADY POSTED AND I AGREE WITH THE RELATED SAFETY CONCERNS AND NEED FOR A RECALL. *TR

ENGINE FREQUENTLY GOES IN TO ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE. THIS HAPPENS TYPICALLY WHEN THE CAR IS BEING LIGHTLY THROTTLED SUCH AS AROUND CORNERS OR IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THE CAR RESTARTS FINE, BUT MUST BE COMPLETELY TURNED OFF, WHICH DISABLES AIRBAGS, MAKES POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES IMPOSSIBLE TO USE. PREVIOUSLY I HAVE CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY OF THE CAR AT THE SUGGESTION OF NUMEROUS MECHANICS, AND THIS RESOLVED THE ISSUE FOR NEARLY A YEAR. NOW THE PROBLEM IS BACK AGAIN. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ONLINE AND MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE THE SAME COMPLAINT. WE REPLACED THE TPS AT A COST OF AROUND $300 AS A POSSIBLE FIX AND THIS WORKED FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS - NOW THE PROBLEM IS BACK AND MY RESEARCH INDICATES WE NEED TO HAVE THE THROTTLE BODY REPLACED. THIS WILL COST US AROUND $500 - FOR A TOTAL REPAIR COST OF AROUND $800 - WHICH WE CANNOT AFFORD! ON 1/9/2013, I WAS DRIVING AT APPROX. 35 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE TURNED ITSELF OFF. I ATTEMPTED RESTARTING THE ENGINE TO NO AVAIL. I ALSO KEPT THE OLD PART.THE NEW PART IS DIFFERENT IN SIZE & HAS METAL KEY HOLES INSTEAD OF PLASTIC. THE FAIL SAFE ENGINE IS ONLY SUPPOSE TO COME ON IF THE ENGINE COOLANT IS VERY LOW ACCORDING TO THE FORD OWNERS MANUAL, THERE WAS NO REASON FOR IT TO COME ON AT ANY TIME IN MY SUV TRUCK. 2006 FORD EXPEDITION E.B. AND ENGINE FAILSAFE MODE 1. THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE: THERE ARE NO DETECTABLE EVENTS PRECEDING WHATEVER CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO GO INTO "ENGINE FAILSAFE" MODE. THE VEHICLE RUNS FINE AS IT ALWAYS DOES AND THEN IT JUST HAPPENS RANDOMLY. 2. THE FAILURE, HOW OFTEN IT OCCURS, ITS CONSEQUENCES: FAILURE OCCURS AT RANDOM AND IS NOT PREDICTABLE IT JUST HAPPENS. THE VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY AS IT SHOULD AND IN A SPILT SECOND IT IS LIKE THE VEHICLE JUST SHUTS OFF, THE INFORMATION CENTER DISPLAYS "ENGINE IN FAILSAFE MODE". THE ENGINE IS ACTUALLY RUNNING IN FAILSAFE MODE BUT ONLY AT AN IDLE, THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES FUNCTION HOWEVER THE THROTTLE IS TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE IN FAILSAFE MODE, THE VEHICLE SLOWS TO A CREEP AND WILL STOP AT THE SLIGHTEST INCLINE. WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS THE ONLY AVAILABLE OPTION IS TO TURN THE KEY OFF AND RESTART. THE VEHICLE ALWAYS RESTARTS AND RESUMES NORMAL OPERATION AND DRIVEABILTY IS FINE, JUST AS THOUGH NOTHING EVER HAPPENED. THE OCCURRENCE FIRST HAPPENED EARLY IN JANUARY 2010, AGAIN IN LATE JANUARY, THEN IN SEPTEMBER 2010 THEN AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 26 THEN TWICE TODAY FEBRUARY 28 ABOUT 20 MINUTES APART. THE CONSEQUENCES: SCARY, DANGEROUS, HAZARDOUS. FEELS LIKE AN INSURANCE CLAIM AND/OR A LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN. WHEN A VEHICLE UNDER POWER JUST SHUTS OFF INSTANTLY FOR NO APPARENT REASON IT IS LOGICAL SERIOUS INJURY OR WORSE IS A REALISTIC CONSEQUENCE. 3. WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE: SO FAR JUST A LOT OF FORD GUESSWORK. THE INTERNET HAS A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF CONSUMER POSTS REGARDING VARIOUS REPAIRS MADE. THE REPORTED REPAIRS RANGE FROM SENSORS, SPARK PLUGS, COILS, CATS,FILTERS, CONVERTERS AND MORE. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING HER 2006 FORD EXPEDITION DOWN A BUSY ROAD AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 40 MPH. SHE WAS DRIVING WITH ANOTHER FRIEND AND OUR 2 CHILDREN (18 MONTHS AND 1 WEEK!) A WRENCH SYMBOL WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN. SHE PUT ON HER HAZARDS AND WAS ABLE TO SAFELY COME TO A STOP. SHE TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO THE OFF POSITION AND THEN WAS ABLE TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. AFTER TALKING TO A MECHANIC AND DOING INTERNET RESEARCH I FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WHICH CONSISTS OF THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF THE THROTTLE. THE FIX IS UPWARDS OF $500; SO A RECALL OF SOMETHING THAT EXPENSIVE CAN EASILY BE BRUSHED UNDER THE TABLE BY FORD. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD. I WAS DRIVING 45 MILES AN HOUR DOWN A MAJOR HIGHWAY WHEN MY ENGINE IN MY 2006 FOR EXPEDITION JUST SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING AND WENT INTO "FAIL -SAFE MODE". THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO CROSS 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC WITHOUT INCIDENT TO GET TO THE SHOULDER. I SHUT OFF MY CAR AS THE MANUAL TOLD ME TOO. AFTER 20 MINS I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE CAR. I DROVE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP SO THEY COULD LOOK INTO THE ISSUE. IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS NEEDING A REPLACEMENT THROTTLE BODY. WHEN I ASKED "WHAT HAPPENED? WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?", I WAS TOLD "IT JUST HAPPENS," AND "THERE IS NOTHING PREVENTATIVE THAT CAN BE DONE.". CONVENIENTLY THIS PART WAS NOT COVERED BY MY 100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY THAT FORD IS SO PROUD OF ON ITS USED VEHICLES. THIS REPAIR COST ME $609. MY WIFE, THREE KIDS AND MYSELF WERE IN OUR 2006 FORD EXPEDITION LIMITED COMING DOWN A MOUNTAIN PASS IN LAKE TAHOE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE STOPPED! A CODE ON THE DASH READ "FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE". THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THERE WAS NO POWER, NO ACCELERATION. I WAS LUCKY TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE CARSON CITY, NV FORD DEALER AND PAID FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. NOTES FROM DEALER: ROAD TEST COULD NOT VERIFY. PERFORMED EEC SELF TEST, HAS CODE P0104. PERFORMED WIGGLE TEST AND PINPOINT TESTS. PERFORMED RECORDER-MONITOR TEST ALL THE PIDS LOOKED GOOD. REMOVED THE MAF SENSOR. HAS DEBRIS ON THE MAF SENSOR WIRES. RECOMMEND A NEW MAF SENSOR." I PUT IN A NEW MAF SENSOR AND AIR FILTER. IN DRIVING LESS THAN 3 MILES AFTER THIS WAS DONE, THE TRUCK DID THE SAME THING. THE "FAIL SAFE ENGINE MODE" CAME ON, LOSS OF POWER AND ACCELERATION. I HAD TO TURN THE TRUCK OFF COMPLETELY, REMOVE KEY AND RESTART. THEN THE TRUCK DID NOT HOLD THE IDLE AND DIED. AFTER A SECOND TIME, THE TRUCK RESTARTED. I AM STILL DRIVING WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF AND HAVE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH THE FORD DEALER TOMORROW MORNING (6-24-10) TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. MY MECHANIC SAYS THE SYSTEMS READS OK ON COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC, BUT THE FAIL-SAFE SYSTEM DEFINITELY SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN DUE TO A POSSIBLE GLITCH IN THE SYSTEM. VEHICLE HAD BEEN DISPLAYING THE LOW AIR PRESSURE LIGHT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ( SMOG CONTROL). TIRES WERE CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE PROPERLY INFLATED, ALL FLUIDS, FILTERS, ETC, WERE CHECKED AND FOUND TO BE IN WORKING ORDER. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 15-20 MILES. BOTH BEFORE MENTION LIGHTS CONTINUED TO COME ON AND OFF. VEHICLE WAS PARKED. APPROX 1 HOUR LATER VEHICLE HORN SOUNDED, I WALKED TO CHECK HORN AND FOUND THE VEHICLE INTERIOR IN FLAMES. I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE FIRE OUT, AND KEEP THE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVERS SIDE DASH, STEERING AREA. VEHICLE INTERIOR SUFFERED HEAVY SMOKE DAMAGE, FRONT WINDSHIELD CRACKED. CONTACTED INSURANCE COMPANY AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY. VEHICLE IS ONLY 9 MONTHS OLD AND STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I REQUESTED THAT FORD REPLACE MY VEHICLE WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE JUST LIKE I PURCHASED. FORD SENT LETTER SAYING THAT SINCE INSURANCE COMPANY IS INVOLVED THEY PROPOSE NO FURTHER ACTION. BUT SINCE VEHICLE IS USED, INSURANCE COMPANY WILL ONLY PAY FAIR MARKET VALUE, LEAVING ME TO PAY FOR THE BALANCE. ALL I WANT IS FOR FORD TO REPLACE MY DEFECTIVE VEHICLE. *JB
