At approximately 100,500 miles, my 2018 Ford Expedition XLT 3.5L EcoBoost developed loud rattling noises consistent with cam phaser failure. Zeigler Ford confirmed the failed cam phasers on October 20, 2025. These phasers were previously replaced on the vehicle at 51,000 miles on February 10, 2022, at Al Piemonte Ford under the Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03. They used the old phasers HL3Z-6C525-CD which are known to be defective rather than the new updated phasers ML3Z-6C525. Cam phaser failure can cause engine misfires, loss of power, and potential engine damage, creating a serious safety risk, especially at highway speeds. This issue has been reported by multiple Ford Expedition owners, indicating it is not isolated. I request that NHTSA investigate whether this defect warrants a recall or expanded coverage for vehicles like mine that exceed CSP mileage limits. My vehicle has been properly maintained, and the failure is due to a known defect in the 3.5L EcoBoost cam.

Dec 30, 2025

When attempting to pass a slow moving vehicle on a 2 lane highway when driving up a hill the transmission failed to properly shift instead making a loud clunking and grinding sound before eventually managing to shift into a gear. This failure to shift properly meant that the vehicle was unexpectedly without power when trying to change lanes leading to a dangerous situation.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving over 40 MPH, the vehicle stalled on two occasions. The contact stated that while driving a roundabout, the vehicle lost motive power. The accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle jerked and was sluggish, and there was no area to pull over to. Upon parking the vehicle, the power train warning light was illuminated. The contact called an independent mechanic who was unable to service the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was jerking due to the CS drum and transmission failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted regarding the latest symptoms that the vehicle had displayed. The manufacturer was contacted, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 93,000.

My vehicle has started to have problems shifting in some gears(3rd & 7th). I have been doing research, and this seems to be a recurring problem for vehicles with the 10r80 transmission. Where this has caused a big safety risk, is that a few times, the vehicle wouldn't move when pushing on the gas after having the foot on the brake after I had already left and been driving it for 5-10 minutes. This has put me at risk of getting hit by oncoming cars since I couldn't get the vehicle to go as it should to cross a road or intersection. My vehicle shows no dashboard warnings that anything is wrong. I have had all regular maintenance done, don't use the vehicle for towing, and I only have 70k miles on the car. Over the years I have had it where it just feels like the vehicle won't shift, but it has gone away pretty quickly. It's only been since this summer that it is now a persistent issue. I have brought it up over the years to the ford service department, and nothing was shared with me that there was an issue with the vehicle transmission. It is now that it's been consistent(only when the transmission is cold) that this happens on every drive. All Ford wants to do is charge me to rebuild the transmission conveniently now that I am out of warranty!

I was driving down the road at 45 MPH, I pushed the accelerator then my vehicle shifted out of drive to neutral, the RPM increased, the car speed decelerated, then the vehicle put itself back in gear severely downshifted so much that my car lost 20 MPH then the engine returned to normal after a violent shake and loud grinding noise. The car could have caused an accident had there been anyone behind me. Luckily there were no other cars around me. I had the vehicle towed to the dealer. They are unable to duplicate the issue I stated but did indicate a skip in cylinders when they hooked it up. I had the transmission overhauled at 53K when it was not shifting properly. I asked Ford to replace the transmission however they elected to overhaul it. From time to time the transmission would shift odd but nothing of over concern. The incident on Nov 3 was very unusual and safety of travel for me. The vehicle had done something similar earlier that morning but that time it was from a stop and no speed so not nearly as violent as the one later that evening. The vehicle is currently sitting at a dealer needing a transmission replaced, however the vehicle is 500 miles over the 75K ESP. Ford is refusing to discuss the problem.

The transmission started jerking and downshifting and and like the brakes was coming on and stoping you and I was pulling out onto the road and it wouldn’t go and I was setting in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic and scared for my life, luckily I didn’t have anyone with me and it moved a little and I was finally able to get it out of the road. This is the problem everyone is having FORD you need to recall these transmissions and replace them with new ones that are better this is a shame and bad business. It is hard enough to afford buying vehicles in this day and time and then it need a transmission that is expensive to replace.

Oct 13, 2025

Since November 2024 to date the transmission has reduced power when trying to accelerate thus being unsafe when trying to pull out into traffic. It also will not engage reverse thus again impeding when in traffic. It appears randomly. Verified software has been updated. Ford is saying complete transmission replacement is needed on a vehicle that is only 7 years old.

Sep 22, 2025

-The transmission shifts hard and often skips a gear while driving -On slick roads it is easy to loose control from the sudden shift and jerk. -Yes, I have taken it to the dealer and they confirmed the problem and said that it is a known issue. -Yes the dealer has inspected it -There were no warning lamps or messages.

Sep 18, 2025

At highway speed the car erratically shifted and lost power most likely due to cdf drum failure in the transmission. It happens randomly due to a known transmission issue. Can you imagine loosing power at hwy speed with a vehicle full of children?

Aug 29, 2025

The transmission unexpectedly shifts into neutral while accelerating, particularly between 3rd and 5th gear. This is very dangerous, as the car loses power and stalls. This has led to several close calls, such as when merging into traffic or accelerating from a stoplight, which almost resulted in me being rear-ended or t-boned.

Aug 26, 2025

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the transmission independently upshifted and then shifted into neutral. The contact stated that the transmission temperature gauge became elevated, and the vehicle shuddered while accelerating. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the transmission was previously replaced twice before owning the vehicle. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired because the warranty had expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

Aug 20, 2025

The transmission is not reliable. The vehicle is shifting erratically and the engine RPMs fluctuate drastically. Our safety is at risk when the vehicle will not accelerate when giving the vehicle gas. It is failing when merging onto highways and climbing hills. It has even begun to experience these issues when downshifting improperly. The FORD dealer has confirmed that the transmission is not performing as originally designed. This seems to be a known problem but FORD is not acknowledging the need to assist the customers. Many other owners of the same vehicle with the 10 speed transmission are experiencing the same problems as reported online. This problem first appeared in our vehicle a few weeks ago but has gotten progressively worse in the last few days.

Aug 12, 2025

As I was driving yesterday, my transmission began making a strange noise and did a hard shift. About 1/2 mile later it made the noise again and downshifted to first and would not shift up. I was able to turn off the main road I was on to a side street where I put the car in park and shut it off to look under and around it. Not seeing anything I got back in and started it. I wanted to try to get it into a nearby parking lot, but after being shut off it began shifting again and I was able to get it home. It has had hard shift issues before and lagging response issues, but this is the first time it has done the downshift and noise. I went to some online forums and found multiple people with a similar issue, one of which suggested reporting it.

2 instances have occured while driving. Stored codes are P0562 Charging system voltage low and P07E6 Stuck in Park (6/6/2025) and P07E6 Stuck in Park (7/12/2025). I believe the issue may be related to TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN - Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive - 23-2120 Upon acceleration to pass a car, I heard a loud knock, lost power, let off the gas, an Engine failure error flashed on my screen, regained power and was then able to accelerate again. The potential cost could be $5,600 and potentially higher due to labor. Ford's have been plagued by transmission issues year after year. How many vehicles need to be affected before a formal defect investigation focused on the 10R80 transmission can be made.

Recall 24E13 was issued for my vehicle on 4/16/2025 and i had repairs done on my vehicle in march. this recall states that catalytic converters may be replaced unnecessarily and the dealership has agreed with me on this. Ford continues to deny me reimbursement for this issue and I paid +/- 3800 for this repair to be done when I am sure I did not need it now.

Component/System That Failed: The 10R80 automatic transmission is malfunctioning. It causes harsh shifting, delayed acceleration, hesitation, and unpredictable surging. These issues have been confirmed as part of Ford’s internal TSB 23-2250, which directly references this transmission defect. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: This transmission failure poses a serious safety risk. The hesitation and delay in acceleration occur during merging, turning, and highway driving, which can cause near misses and sudden loss of power. The delayed response time compromises my ability to move safely through traffic. Reproduced/Confirmed: Yes. The issue was confirmed by Liberty Ford in Fayetteville, NC, after I paid for a diagnostic. The service department acknowledged the symptoms but refused to cover the diagnosis or repair under warranty since no recall was showing under my VIN. Inspected by Others: The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer directly or by law enforcement or insurance. However, it was diagnosed and documented by an authorized Ford dealership (Liberty Ford in Fayetteville NC). Warning Lamps or Symptoms: There were no warning lamps or error codes. The symptoms began subtly but became consistent over time. The first noticeable event was approximately in “early 2025”, with increased severity since then. I submitted a written complaint to Ford on June 9, 2025, via USPS Priority Mail (Tracking #[XXX]) and also filed a certified safety complaint with NHTSA (Tracking #[XXX]) but have received no response. I am requesting formal investigation and recall action. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My wife was driving home from a sports class with my kids in the car. She went to make a left turn against oncoming traffic and the car completely lost power. Pressing the gas did not give any power to the car and the car felt like it was in neutral. if the car did not have enough power at the time of the turn to make it through the oncoming lane, it would have been hit by the oncoming car endangering the lives of the occupants of both vehicles. Our vehicle continued to exhibit the same behavior and I drove it to the dealer. While on the way to the dealer it had 2 powertrain failures before I got it there (30 miles away). The dealership ran diagnostics and said it would be best to get a new tranny as opposed to overhaul since the vehicle only has 90,000 miles and is less than 7 years old. We ended up getting it towed to a local transmission shop who confirmed the diagnostic. They said the seal on the CDF drum plate failed and there was nothing that could be done to stop it. The tranny was rebuilt with all new parts, half a dozen of them upgraded parts from Ford. Upon researching the symptoms, I found this vehicle exhibited a neutral out condition and Ford wrote a technical service bulletin because this issue is so common. I'm frustrated because my family could have been seriously injured or killed because of a known issue that Ford knows about yet chooses to not fix even though this issue puts passengers in life threatening situations. I would not have known about this issue prior to my car exhibiting the neutral out behavior. My local transmission shop has all the parts that were taken out of the transmission and they are available for inspection.

I have had several issues with this vehicle throughout the years I have owned it. The current issues I am writing about include: transmission failure and replacement, rear passenger door no longer opening and continued issues with the Catalytic convertors. When it comes to the transmission it was unsafe to drive as the gears continued to slip while driving and cause the vehicle to temporarily loose power. This could have resulted in an accident. The vehicle is currently having the transmission replaced at a repair shop where they confirmed the issues. They will also be looking at the other two issues as well. The door not opening poses a huge safety concern as we are only able to use one rear door for entering and exiting.

2018 Ford Expedition Max 4wd; For the last 4 years I have consistently (1-2x a year) brought this car into a ford dealership for the transmission failing to go into gear at random times while driving under normal conditions. Even though multiple TSB's had been sent out, they "couldn't replicate" or "no codes found" or "the transmission tech is 4–6 weeks out"... nothing was done. Twice while merging into on coming traffic the transmission has been stuck in a gear, will not accelerate or go, and the entire dash illuminates with all the flashing symbols. I'm just glad my children were not in the car with me. It was terrifying. Now, the week of May 18, 2025, I'm back for my annual transmission issue as it stalled on 4/26/2025, and I almost was hit by an 18 wheeler, the ford dealership said "you need a transmission overhaul, TCM reprogram, and there is internal failure, the CDF drum comes apart and Ford is aware they have a faulty seal." The total to fix is $8,214.25 and guess what, NONE of it is covered. I have kept my vehical serviced and always taken care of it. But I will have to pay the price to fix it, or worse if there is a car accident.

1. The issue involves the transmission and camshaft components of the vehicle. Despite the fact that both the transmission and camshaft were replaced by the Ford dealership after purchase in 2018, the vehicle continues to experience problems. These components have been inspected by the dealership, and the vehicle is available for further inspection upon request. 2. The vehicle’s loss of power during highway driving and while attempting to accelerate poses a significant safety risk. On several occasions, the vehicle has lost power while making turns or driving on the highway, nearly causing accidents with other vehicles. This has been a very frightening experience for us, as the sudden loss of power could have led to a collision. 3. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by the Ford dealership, which replaced the transmission and camshaft components. However, the vehicle continues to run roughly, indicating that the issues have not been fully resolved. These repairs were not covered under warranty, and we had to pay for them out of pocket. 4. The vehicle has been inspected by the Ford dealership multiple times. Despite the repairs, the problems persist. The vehicle has been regularly maintained and garage-kept. 5. There were no warning lamps, messages, or error codes indicating the problem before the failure. However, there has been a loud ticking sound when the vehicle is started and running, which started to occur after the initial repairs. The vehicle has had no other prior indicators to suggest the underlying issue. We purchased the vehicle brand new with only 11 miles on it it currently barely has 70k miles on it. We dropped the vehicle off at the beginning of August 2024 and didn't get it back until almost the end of October, with us needing to bring it back to the dealership for more checks/repairs in December of 2024. We have to pay out of pocket and are without a vehicle because of the constant issues and safety concerns. we can provide receipts and more docs

Cam phaser failure, yes, available for inspection. This disrupts the engine's timing and can lead to oil pressure issues as well as engine stalling or engine damage. Yes, confirmed by ford dealer. No, not been inspected by manufacturer or others. No warning lamps yet but the noise was the first indicator and it began about 6 weeks ago. My 2018 Ford Expedition is experiencing cam phaser failure. I had an extended warranty that i have not reached the mileage for yet but the date causes me not to be able to have it fixed under warranty. This is a very expensive repair and I am finding out more and more of these vehicles in this age range are having the same problems. I would ask that Ford be required to pay for this repair. I have reported this to Ford and received a case number of [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted without warning. The transmission also shifted hard, and the vehicle jerked while driving at various speeds. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed the vehicle with transmission failure. The transmission was rebuilt. The following day while driving approximately 65 MPH, the transmission shifted hard, and the contact became aware that transmission fluid was leaking from the vehicle after exiting and inspecting the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed the vehicle with transmission failure and replaced the transmission. The contact stated that the transmission still shifted hard while driving and the message that the engine was overheating was displayed. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who had rebuilt the new transmission. After having the third repair, the failure recurred. The vehicle was returned to the dealer but was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

Cam phaser and timing chain assembly is beginning to fail. Ford has a CSB out on this problem but is unwilling to repair or replace components. Transmission has had to be replaced be cause of failure at 100000 miles. I’ve had to replace the water pump twice on my Expedition. Driver side seat belt no longer retracts.

I cash purchased a 2018 Ford Expedition on [XXX] - I have a 90 day warranty and purchased an extended 2 year warranty. I've taken the vehicle back twice to Auto Nation in Denver Co for transmission issues. The transmissions slips and makes a horrible nose when it shift. I can't drive it due to it being unsafe to drive. I do not feel safe driving the vehicle. Auto Nation continues to declining to repair the vehicle. I've owned the vehicle for 2months and maybe drove it for only 100 miles due to the unsafety. Ford has know issues with these 10speed transmissions. I was never informed by the dealer of these know issues therefore was sold a lemon. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

In January 2025, we had issues with the transmission not shifting smoothly while out of town. While driving on the freeway at around 65MPH, in traffic, the transmission suddenly downshifted from 10th to either 3rd or 4th gear immediately slowing the vehicle. We almost got rear ended and tried to get over to the shoulder. By the time we could get over, which took about a minute, the transmission recovered itself and went back into the correct gear. We arrived home, took the truck in and was told the transmission needed to be rebuilt. There was a known issue with the transmission in these vehicles. We paid to have the transmission rebuilt. In April 2025, we heard rattling in the engine. We took it in and was told the Cam Phasers were bad and needed to be replaced. Another known issue. We have had the cam phasers replaced in 2020 under warranty. We had them reprogrammed again in 2022 for a recall. Now we are having to replace them again out of pocket. We again, paid for the repairs and got the vehicle back. I called Ford customer service and asked about any programs or reimbursement for these known issues. (Ref # [XXX]) I was told there are none at this time, despite Ford knowing they have issues. Ford has done nothing to correct the problems, but is obviously aware of the issues. Our vehicle only has about 50K miles and has had the most repairs on any vehicle that I've ever owned. We have already purchased the vehicle, and I'm having to "purchase" it a second time with the high cost of repairs. At the very least, Ford should repair the defective parts and cover the cost of such repairs. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition Max. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle was jerking slightly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the transmission computer software was updated; however, the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle was attempting to learn the contact's driving pattern and was operating as designed. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 MPH, the vehicle jerked and experienced an unintended transmission downshift into first gear. A message advising that the power train was disabled and to take the vehicle to the dealer was displayed. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times while driving, causing the contact to sustain whiplash and neck pain. The contact stated that she was already afflicted with osteoporosis on the neck and spine, and her husband was afflicted with heart disease. The contact was concerned that the failure could further damage their health. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with transmission failure, and the dealer provided an estimated fee for the transmission replacement. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was then taken to a transmission specialist, where the same assessment was made. The mechanic informed the contact that the vehicle could be repaired for a cheaper amount. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The manufacturer informed the contact that they would consider covering 40 percent of the expense. The failure mileage was approximately 25,000.

Transmission issue: Vehicle will sometimes not go into gear. When I pull out into traffic sometimes vehicle will not go into gear. Mostly occurs with 2nd and 4th gear but has happened with other gears as well. Also when shifting g into gear sometimes it takes a while and sometimes he vehicle jerks during shifting.

Apr 1, 2025

The car will drop into neutral while on the highway. This happens mostly when trying to accelerate to merge into traffic, down shifting to pass someone etc. Once the car goes into neutral you lose all power. This presents a safety risk as you can be trying to pass someone or merge into traffic and your vehicle stops accelerating. This happened to me when trying to merge onto a busy freeway. I had to pull to the side to avoid getting into an accident. Then once on the side of the road i had to get the car back into gear and then work to merge from a dead stop. Apparently this is a known issue called a neutral out. Once this happened to me the transmission had to be rebuilt.

Mar 26, 2025

The transmission suddenly and violently knocked from drive into neutral while driving. I had the vehicle towed home, and have been driving it until the suspect part finally breaks for good.

Mar 3, 2025

I bought the vehicle used with 108,xxx miles on it in May of 2024. In July I had in the repair shop for one issue and noticed there was an issue with the Auto Start/Stop. When the Auto Start/Stop is engaged and the brake is depressed it jams into first gear like a standard vehicle when the clutch is released to early. Transmission fluid was checked to be low so it was refilled. I was told to change my driving habits, which is what I did. I no longer use it because it still has the issue. Move forward to December 2024. I was driving and realized it was skipping 2nd, 4th, and sometimes 6th gears. Upon further research I found that it was normal to happen. When I was driving it home on February 20 I lost 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I was close enough home where I was able to get home. When I got home I restarted and still had no lower gears. I let it sit for a couple of hours and drove it again and I had the normal gear shift. I called the dealership and had an appointment scheduled. I was told from that appointment a brand new transmission was needed or a transmission overhaul was needed to fix the issue. I was told to contact Ford Customer Support to find out if there were any options about the warranties that may be out there or recalls about the 10-speed transmission. When I called Ford about the possibility of my 10-speed transmission being under the recall for the transmission I was told that because the VIN did not need to recalled. Upon further research I have found multiple people with this issue in this vehicle. Ford would not cover anything as the vehicle is out of warranty and over 100,000 miles. I was told to file a claim with NHTSA because of the risk it may cause others, but at this time there was nothing more that could be done.

The 10R80 transmission does not work. This is a know problem with Ford, would be nice for them to actually take action and fix the problem they know they have. They have replacement part that fixes the problem, would be nice for them to stand behind their car.

Ford had to rebuild rear differential. The transmission failed, too. Both unacceptable especially at 62k miles and zero utility usage including trailering or 4wd.

Transmission delays or goes into neutral when accelerating. I have had a couple close calls when making left hand turns across 2 way roads. Another close call during a merge where the vehicle seemed like it just decided not to go. I research the issue and found TSB23-2250. This should be a safety recall and not just a service bulletin. Ford knows they installed faulty products on the roads and could leave to very serious accidents. This TSB is not a wear and tear item, this is due to faulty programming and parts. GM uses the same transmissions on their products with out nearly as many issues as ford.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the response I have received regarding the cam phaser replacement for my 2018 Ford Expedition. Why is my vehicle not covered under the Cam Phaser Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03, where 100% of the amount was covered under this program. I had my vehicle diagnosed from Malloy Ford with TSB 23-2148 VCTS replacement. My vehicle has extremely low mileage for being a 2018 with only 44,000 miles. After contacting Ford Motor Company’s Customer Service, I was informed that the faulty cam phasers on my vehicle are not showing under the Field Service Action report. I am aware that for the cam phasers to be marked as faulty within the Field Service Action (FSA) records, the issue must first be diagnosed and repaired under the 21B10 Powertrain Control Module (PCM) program for the Cam Phaser Rattle. Once this procedure has been performed, if the problem persists, the cam phasers can then be replaced under Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 – Cam Phaser Replacement. Despite this clarification, I remain extremely dissatisfied with the outcome the NHTSA and Ford Motor Company has done to remedy this issue for millions of customers. I believe more can be done to address this issue promptly under the know Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03. The rattle from the cam phasers remains a persistent problem and has not been resolved. More needs to be done to help the millions of customers that are experiencing these issues and help them to avoid the outgrows repair bills only caused by Ford Motor Company using cheap parts. Please help remedy this situation.

I was on a road trip of about 900 miles. My vehicle at the time had 103,000 miles. All maintenance service intervals had been complied with since I purchased vehicle new. About half way through the trip the transmission started acting up. I was on the highway between 75 and 80 mph when it suddenly downshifted in a jerk then it failed to accelerate. This whole time I was pressing the gas pedal and my speed continued to drop and the vehicle jerking forward and back. I was able to put it in “manual” selectable speed and regain control. I had the vehicle inspected at my destination and the dealer could find no fault codes and fluid check was good. My vehicle continued random jerky shift changes at the most dangerous times. I still got no check engine light or any such failure or service alerts. On my return trip home, it did it again. This time I was watching all the gauges. I noticed my engine coolant temp spike to 240 degrees and my transmission fluid temp spiked at 247degrees. Outside air temp was 40 degrees and it was three occupants and no towing involved. The dangerous jerking and random transmission shift changes continued. After about 30 minutes of reduced speed driving on the highway the temps dropped. However the shifting was hard and erratic. I took the vehicle to the dealer after returning home. I now need a whole new transmission. This situation was extremely dangerous as to the uncontrollability of the slam shifting of the gears causing a rapid change of speed. I am very fortunate I was not in a wreck! In my research of this problem, I found I was not alone. It is a terrible design by Ford. It gives no warnings other than slamming you around in the vehicle. Something must be done!

When oil in the transmission is still cold, even when engine has wormed up to operation temperature, the transmission is shifting hard, specifically it shifts the hardest from 4th gear into 5th. For a moment car has no acceleration, and then it slams into a 5th gear. I also noticed that the transmission shifts from 4th into 1st, then into 5th. It lasts about 30 seconds. It casing a safety issue when I merge onto a busy road, and try to get up to speed, car would not respond for those 30 seconds causing traffic to catch up and slam on their brakes to avoid rear ending my vehicle.

Transmission Issue: We have experienced clicking with our transmission for years and have expressed our concerns to our Ford service department. Their response has always been that it was normal. Now our vehicle has started to lose power when shifting between 2 and 4 gear. The vehicle will lose all power, for anywhere between 3 and 7 seconds, and then violently shift into gear and launch forward. The RPM's will stay around 3-4 thousand for 2 to 3 seconds and then the transmission will operate normally. It is very infrequent, but it has happened on very dangerous roads such as [XXX] and [XXX] in California. It is very scary when it happens, and I fear that I will be rear ended because of it. Since purchasing the vehicle we have had extensive issues with the driveability of the car. Leading up to the eventual full transmission replacement, we surfaced the issues below repeatedly for over a year and a half. Yet, we were always told "everything is fine" "we couldn't duplicate what you are describing" or "the vehicle has to learn how you drive". Biggest Issues: - Poor shifting of gears with sudden jerking and/or random accelerations - Vehicle not accelerating - acts stuck - Loss of 'power' vehicle does nothing - Eventually complete transmission failure in the middle of an intersection The transmission was completely replaced in Fall of 2023. Mind you this was only after I elevated my concerns to Ford Corporate who sent a specialist to investigate. Only then did Koons Ford acknowledge that yes there is a "big problem". Yet, since the repair the jerking and power issues have continued. When we followed up immediately after the repair we were told again "vehicle has to learn how you drive". So I waited 3000 miles and reached out again and was told I needed to go to the dealership and drive it with a technician in the car (yet again, not taking my word seriously). Then this summer the issues intensified and eventually the power boosters failed and needed to be replaced. This vehicle is NOT safe and Ford has misled me along the way. It has been a constant fight to get them to help us. Bottom line, this is our primary family vehicle as we have five children, four of whom I drive around daily. It is not safe or reliable. The vehicle has almost led to three major accidents, where I was stuck with cars honking at me. It's pretty pathetic when friends and coworkers frequently say "you don't have your car again?!? What's wrong with it now?" Please I kindly ask that you hold Ford fully accountable. I am now aware that when I inquired about a buy back in 2022, I should have not been told "no you are not eligible".

When we drive long distance or up in altitude a coolant temperature indicator comes up and says it is high, it hits about 132 degrees going up any sort of hill and then goes down after a few seconds, this doesn't seem to be normal. We took to a Ford dealership and tried to have them replicate the issue but they could not, we have replaced the coolant hose and it is still happening, there is no leak ANYWHERE. If Ford can't figure out this problem then who can? We have also had the transmission replaced around 120K miles which I feel is ridiculous, it was putting my family in danger when we were driving, we had NO CHOICE. My Ford app is also giving me a service engine soon warning, saying that my emissions and exhaust system are failing, why would all of this happen after shy of 6 years? This warning started happening 06/11/23. We feel like we received a lemon vehicle, we also cannot use the sunroof, my stepping boards do not want to work, my mirrors when locking and unlocking my vehicle just click I have to manually adjust them...I take very good care of my vehicle (regular oil changes/premium gas) and to receive ALL of these issues if highly disappointing....I can't trade it in with all the issues and I can't even get HALF of what we owe...

When driving, the transmission feels like it is slipping and doesn't transfer power to the wheels. The effect is that you have a loss of power, especially when accelerating to enter the highway or to pass someone. The power train on this vehicle has a 5 year warranty, and our vehicle is 6 years old. This vehicle has the 10 speed transmission (10R80) that shows many issues online both before and after this 5 year warranty period. This isn't just a warranty issue, as the loss of power when entering a highway or executing a pass is dangerous. I will indicate an issue date, but this has been a multiple recurring issue for many months.

Sep 10, 2024

The vehicle on multiple occasions has failed to shift up through the various 10 gears and in other occasions failed to properly accelerate as needed resulting in a muted and unsafe merge onto highway traffic. This has also led to the vehicle speed on highways to be limited to 40 MPH forcing us to pull over on a busy high speed highway and stop and restart the vehicle to have the transmission and power train respond properly. The 10 transmission appears to be the reason for the dangerous situation.

I brought my vehicle in for inspection and there is an issue with the cam phasers and timing. The cam phaser issue is a known Ford Expedition issue that they addressed and extended warranty coverage. I have been bringing my vehicle for routine maintenance, oil changes, tire rotations etc to both Koerner Ford of Syracuse, NY and more recently Dave Pirro Ford in Skaneateles, NY. I had an extended warranty that I purchased that recently expired. During many visits to the dealerships the cam phaser issue was never addressed even though it would have previously been covered under warranty and now is not. I would like to know my options as this issue is now going to cost over $6,000 to fix.

My Expedition just hit 83,000 miles and has a clean title. We purchased it approximately a year and a half ago to drive around our 4 children. Around 73K miles, the catalytic converter went bad and had to be replaced. Fortunately, this was covered by a warranty. Not long ago we began to notice some rough shifting and a rattling when we turned the car on, though the rattling would stop once the engine warmed up. This week, we experienced a sudden aggressive lurching in the vehicle at 50mph accompanied by a sudden check engine light. In addition, it was accompanied by a loud, constant rattling. We were driving with our children when this happened and it scared us all. I drove it very slowly to the dealership first thing the next morning as it felt as though it could break down at any moment. It's currently at the Ford dealership, though still available for inspection, and they have said that we will need a new timing system and possibly a new engine. In addition, there are signs that our transmission is also going to need replaced.

Aug 9, 2024

When accelerating to pass on four lane highway at approximately 65 mph, transmission went into neutral as I pressed on the accelerator and had no power. This occurred twice where we almost got hit from behind. Almost got rear ended as the car would no go back into gear without shifting into neutral. There were no warnings or lamps. Took to dealer and they said it was normal but could rebuild it for 5,000 dollars. It’s not normal. My family’s life shouldn’t be in danger because of this defect. This happened dangerously twice at 62,000 miles and at 84,000 miles. Now transmissions is missing gears all the time at 95,000 miles. A transmission should not be sold that can’t last more than 64,000 miles and has these types of issues. There are hundreds of people online all reporting the same problems and lawsuits. Please recall these defective transmissions.

This car is a 2018 Ford Expedition with the 3.5L eco-boost and 10 speed transmission with 95,000mi. So it started as just some rough shifting from time to time but got worse after driving through some mountains, after about a week the transmission went from rough shifting to actually feeling like going into neutral and then jerk into gear. Our two week trip went from nothing to acting like it can't find the gear to go into. I've only noticed it going from second to third to fourth and I've taken it to two shops and they can't get it to act up but it still remains after fluid change and reprogram from the dealer.

On [XXX] my wife was driving with my three children from Virginia to Michigan after my step-fathers sudden passing. While driving on the interstate in Ohio, the vehicle began shifting abruptly and violently. The wrench light also came on the dash along with a message recorded in the Ford App stating "Powertrain Malfunction." My wife pulled into a rest stop and called me hysterical, stating that the vehicle was jerking so bad upon acceleration that she was afraid to cause an accident. Since we purchased an extended warranty (third-party CarMax), we found a nearby auto shop in network and I drove down from Michigan to meet my wife and get the vehicle to the shop (Tuffy). After inspection, Tuffy stated that the entire transmission would need to be replaced, but that they were on back-order through the local Ford Dealership and could take up to 12 weeks. I also contacted Ford to see if there was any remaining manufacture warranty, but was told the the 3 year/ 36k mile warranty was expired. So I continued and had the vehicle repaired through Tuffy. After several weeks, the transmission was replaced, I flew up to Ohio and drove the vehicle back to Virginia. However, a couple of months later, I discovered that the vehicle, in fact, had a 7 year/ 100k extended powertrain warranty that Ford omitted when I originally contacted them. Ford was reluctant, but ultimately reimbursed me for the out-of-pocket expenses for the repair due to their mistake many months later. On July 6th, I was driving our vehicle with my wife and 3 children when it began jerking and shifting abruptly and the dash produced a wrench and check engine light. I reduced speed and exited the highway drove under 25 mph the remaining 10 minutes back to our home. The erratic jolting/ jerking of the vehicle could have caused a serious accident had we been in any traffic or higher rates of speed. Unfortunately, I reported a similar issue on August 19, 2023 (NHTSA ID Number 11539517). At that time, the vehicle was serviced at a local Ford Dealership and we were told that the auto shop that replaced the transmission did not clear out old computer codes which caused the jerking/ jolting shifting. Ford cleared the codes and stated that the vehicle was repaired. The vehicle operated safely again until this recent incident. The vehicle was towed and is currently at the Ford Dealership.

My 2018 expedition has been repaired by Ford dealership three times. The vehicle started with a hesitancy to shift into reverse then eventually a hard jerk into gear. following that, it began to hesitate to accelerate and rattle and shake hard enough to shake the steering wheel. The powertrain loss warning came on ford pass. Ford dealership said it was transmission and rebuilt it. Three weeks following the repair the very same shaking, rattling and crunching sound started again with power loss. It was intermittent and dealership said with no codes they couldn’t recreate the issue and so no help. The following day on the highway, it started again. I was attempting to stop at a red light and with my foot on the brake, the vehicle attempted to lurch forward and try to go despite the brake. Thankfully, the light turned green and the car in front of me moved. As I continued to drive, I was left stranded with the codes showing actuator failure and cam shaft failure. The dealership then said it was the cam shaft and all actuators that needed to be replaced this time. The SAME rattling and shaking and power loss they said was caused by the transmission they rebuilt 3 weeks earlier but now it is caused by the cam shaft. So 2 repairs later and 4 weeks, it did it again and this time it caught on fire and burned a hole in my hood. The dealership called me the day after I had it towed into the dealership smoking staying it was the heater hoses that caused the shaking, rattling and power loss. Said they could have it fixed the next day. It is a disaster. It is a major safety issue and I am still paying payments on this car that ford cannot fix. This car needs to be recalled and they need to refund for cost of vehicle. This car is going to kill someone!

Jun 28, 2024

My 2018 Ford Expedition started having transmission issues around 49600+ miles. The warranty was 5 years or 60,000 miles. I was out of the 5 years and they will not fix it. I have researched the issue and it seems Ford knew the transmission used in the 2018 models was defective but never notified me. There are class action lawsuits in California on the same issue as well as many disgruntled consumers on the internet. My truck doesn't shift properly and I have almost been in accidents because it stalls and doesn't shift into gear. I have tried everything with Ford to help cover the replacement cost which is $8,000 but they only offered me $4,000. This is a verified issue that they know about in several of their vehicles but they have not notified their customers or did anything with a recall. I am asking for a complete investigation and recall on this issue and hope that you can assist me and all the other consumers who are driving unsafe Ford vehicles.

My transmission started slipping in and out of gear or getting stuck in a gear. I was driving down the highway and my car got stuck in 4th gear after I had to slow down for a car in front of me. I was almost rear ended due to this. Not to mention many other times when trying to speed up, it slipped and wouldn't allow me to increase speed correctly. Took it to Ford and apparently it was a known issue with the 10 Speed Transmission and had to replace the CDF drum. I'm also having issues with my Cam phasers apparently even after being told by the dealer in 2021 that the noise was nothing to worry about after they did the reset.

The transmission stopped working after hit 80k mileage

Feb 4, 2024

Transmission would fail in 1st and 4th gear and stall entire vehicle at any speed. Vehicle would lose all power on highway or coasting down roads. Nearly caused us to be rear ended many times. Entire transmission needed to be rebuilt. Parts were backordered for months. Car was in and out of the shop for months at a time. Ford did not provide a loaner vehicle. Transmission still shifts hard and stalls occasionally

Feb 4, 2024

The transmission will shudder while accelerating, vehicle will shift gears up and down randomly, not allowing me to accelerate while on a road with traffic. The transmission will slam/clunk into gear while driving. When that happens, there is not power and your bot accelerating anymore and it's really unsafe in traffic. While coasting to a stop the transmission will hard shift/clunk and the gears go down whilst coming to a stop.

Jan 26, 2024

At around 55,700 miles the transmission started slipping. Within a few days (less than 100 miles), the transmission would thud and lurch as well. On 2 occasions, one while accelerating at a traffic light and one while making a left hand turn), the vehicle lost power and would not continue celebrating from 3/4 gear. During both instances, my children were also in the car. The second occurrence almost resulted in us being t-boned by oncoming traffic. We took the vehicle to ford and they acknowledged the problem and stayed there was a tech bulletin about it. However we were 2.5 months (but not miles) outside of warranty and the repair was several steps and would result in costs up to $15k! We attempted to call ford as during the time of we were outside the warranty, I had a baby (high risk pregnancy) and then had to wait several weeks for an appointment as well. Corporate ford flat out ignored us as well as the dealer who tried to advocate on our behalf as this was such a severe and dangerous issue.

About two weeks ago my 2018 Ford Expediton Max Platinum 4x4 started exhibiting harsh shifting from 3 to 4 gear. Since then it has gotten worse. Harsh shifting, delayed shifting, harsh engagement of gear, or sometimes not engaging at all leaving me in a a very unsafe position on the road. It appears Ford is very aware of the danger and issued MULTIPLE TSB's about this issue. Vehicle has not been inspected by Ford as the service time is over 6 WEEKS LONG due to the very same issues are widespread. There were no warning lamps or messages before the failure began happening.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving 45 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power inadvertently. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts; however, the vehicle sputtered while restarting. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V392000 (Fuel System, Gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that oil was leaking from the timing valve cover and the front struts. The dealer also informed the contact that the transmission lines were leaking. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 64,500.

In looking up recalls for my vehicle I see several relating to transmission issues with the 2018 Ford Expedition. I contacted Ford they said there were not any recalls for my specific vehicle, however my transmission is experiencing problems I see in other recalls. Specifically when the car is put in park and it rolls forward or back depending on the angle. The other issue is the transmission did not engage when accelerating then it made a noise like something was loose in the transmission. I backed off the accelerator and the transmission engaged again. A warning light came on briefly when it made the noise then disappeared. Ford took down my information the case # is CAS47105525

I turned onto a road and when I pressed the gas to accelerate, the vehicle wouldn’t move. I put the vehicle in park, turned it off and back on and into drive and it let me accelerate. When I got to the red light, I stopped then went to accelerate when it turned green and the vehicle went in reverse and the engine light turned on. Both incidences could have resulted in an accident if there were other vehicles on the road at the time. The dial that changes gears and/or the transmission abruptly stopped working. I took it to the dealership and do not have the diagnostic results yet. They have confirmed issues with shifting gears so far.

Dec 28, 2023

Gears are slipping, vehicle loses power, clunking noises, ghost spanner icon on dashboard, jerks heavily sometimes when going from park to drive, shift system displays on dash after noises.

Nov 5, 2023

The transmission will drop to 1st gear from 3rd or 4th gear. The RPM’s will rev high, the vehicle will not accelerate. This is available for inspection if you’d like to see it. I was almost rear-end when I couldn’t get the vehicle to accelerate. Another time I was on the interstate and in 10th gear, I let off the accelerator pedal and the gear went to 9th gear, as I went to push back on the accelerator to speed up and the vehicle wouldn’t shift to 10th gear and again started to slow down, I immediately got over to head towards the side of the interstate. This is going to cause me to be rear-end if I can’t accelerate when I intend to accelerate. I can recreate this issue once the transmission is over 200 degrees (operating temperature). I have talked to several dealerships and transmission technicians. They believe the CDF Drum Clutch Hub bushing has slipped. The is a 2018 model, so this was BEFORE Ford Motor Company made the updated design to stop the bushing from slipping by create a “lip” to stop the bushing. This has not be officially inspected as most dealers are telling me 30-40 days and 7-12 weeks before they can even look at it. They say their transmission tech is booked way out. This makes me wonder why… upon my research these 10r80 transmissions have this problem. Ford even corrected the design (becuase obviously it was a faulty design, otherwise Ford wouldn’t have made this updated change). It does have a code saying “Engine Not in Park”. But displays no check engine light. It throws lights and warnings when it starts to rev high and says to “see manual”. Someone needs to do some research on these 10r80 tranmissions and Ford needs to correct this faulty design on models that have the bushing slipping. It’s not right that Ford corrected it for the latest models to only leave the older model customers high and dry and in the way of danger. Ford can make this corrective action, but what will it require from the public?

Oct 24, 2023

I've had a couple of issues with my expedition since day 1. When I click on my memory seat to adjust seat/mirror etc. the front mirrors (not the encasement) will turn in one direction and sit there and click until I manually adjust the mirror(s). Today is 10/24/23 and starting yesterday, I was in rush hour traffic and noticed my motor sounded different. Then while headed to work it just started jumping and popping in and out of gear. I am in stopped traffic at one minute and the next be going 70 mph then back to stuck in traffic. So, my fear is driving this thing and it totally failing and it causing a serious wreck to myself and others! This needs to be addressed or I will never own another Ford.

Oct 18, 2023

I have had issues with my Expedition not shifting gears properly/slipping gears. This usually happens during acceleration. Rpm will rise but act as if I’m in neutral and significantly reduce my speed, then with a hard thunk it will jerk my car into gear. This has happened twice on the freeway, once almost causing me to be rear-ended with my children in the car. The other car had to swerve off to the side to avoid hitting me. The dash will flash a shifting warning light and go away almost as soon as I get the chance to look at it. The other times have happened on main roads in town. Thankfully where it’s easy enough to pull off to the side when this happens. But even so, it’s starting to happen more often and at slower speeds where I’m accelerating maybe 5-10 mph faster. Just today, and the reason I am finally posting a complaint, my car slipped out of gear and when it finally slammed back into gear, the force was so strong that it whipped me forward and caused me to brake in the middle of rush hour traffic. Not only that, but it went out 2 more times on my way home and now I’m hearing a rattling noise under my car (which is probably metal shavings). The only thing on the dash this time was a yellow warning reading ‘see manual.’ This is my family vehicle that I use to transport my kids to school, sports, etc. So they are in the vehicle with me about 95% of the time. I am honestly afraid this will happen again at the wrong time while they’re in the car with me. Is Ford waiting for a death to happen before they address this issue? Just do a basic search on Expedition transmissions and it’s all over the place. So many people are having the same issue and forking out so much money to replace or have their transmissions rebuilt. I have taken my vehicle in just for them to tell me they can’t recreate the issue and therefore nothing can be done. No codes are pulling and it drives fine. Ford needs to address this and recall their 10R80 transmissions!

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 25 MPH, the transmission was slipping, and the vehicle failed to exceed 25 MPH while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed. The contact stated that the dealer replaced the valve body instead, because the manufacturer warranty department declined to cover the transmission replacement. The failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

The auto stop/start feature fails to work properly and causes the vehicle engine to stop running while on the road. The warning message "AUTO START/STOP, SHIFT TO P THEN RESTART ENGINE" comes up and you have to put the vehicle in park then restart the engine. This has been confirmed by the dealer (wife was driving it with the tech) and we have to pay $550 plus a diagnosis fee of $150 to get them to resolve this safety issue. Our extended vehicle warranty coverage won't cover it because it's a valve and reprogramming issue, not a part replacement. There are several mentions of this on a google search for the problem, yet Ford isn't covering any of the repair for a known issue. The rep at the Ford dealer said there is even a techincal service bulletin about the issue. Complete failure of the company to resolve this safety issue and charge the consumer for this.

In July of 2023, while driving on the highway and depressing gas pedal, the transmission seemed to disengage from engine. The vehicle lurched, making control difficult and putting me in a position of being unable to get a response when steering vehicle. The vehicle rapidly lost speed making a rear end collision possible. The engine began racing forcing me to release gas pedal completely until I could gently depress pedal hoping the transmission would reengage. The transmission finally chose a gear and I was able to accelerate avoiding a collision and reach a safe speed. No lights or codes showed after the event. This was my first time driving the vehicle on a highway after purchasing it used, 2 weeks prior, from a local Ford dealer, who certified the vehicle as safe to drive. A second incident happened Sept. 2023 under similar circumstances.

The Auto-Start/Stop is malfunctioning as follows: When I am stopped at a stop sign, when the auto-start/stop is engaged, the engine will shut down when fully stopped. When the engine re-engages (by even letting off the brake a small amount), the car transmission jolts the car forward very aggressively even thought the brakes are still pressed. It does this every time that the auto on/off is engaged. It is very dangerous! This is because the car will move a full foot, or more, forward when the engine reengages. I took my Expedition to the Ford dealer and the code is "TSB 23-2250" my understanding is that this code is for "AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - HARSH/DELAYED ENGAGEMENT AND/OR HARSH/DELAYED SHIFT". The dealership said that the Expedition needs a new "valve body" and that it would be on back order or they can overhaul it for about the same price and they can do that soon. The quote is for $1,400 to fix this issue. I have found out that the part is on back-order from the manufacturer and that they have ordered a significant number of this part -- CLEARLY there are a ton of people needing to fix this part right now. This is SIGNIFICANTLY dangerous because when the engine reengages and the transmission has a harsh engagement at that exact same moment, I have come close to rear-ending vehicles several times. This is a significant safety issue and NOT my fault and should be immediately fixed and paid for by FORD. You can contact me in any manner: [XXX] - [XXX] -- [XXX] -- [XXX] . The transmission is a 10 speed and when I took off at the green light and it jerked violently when changing gears then go out of gear and we basically stopped in the middle if the highway and we’re almost rear-ended. It continuously got worse and then completely stopped in the highway. We took it to the Ford Dealership in Florence SC and the mechanic said that FORD knew there was an issue with the 10 speed transmission but were not doing anything to remedy it at this time. We took it to several transmission shops & they each said they had several of FORD expedition &F150 waiting to have new transmission with same issue. Currently our FORD expedition is in the shop awaiting a new transmission. This shop has 4 additional FORDS there with the same issue.

-Powertrain seems to be the issue. It is available for inspection. *This has been happening since March '23- and it was very dangerous to myself and my daughter who was with me - occurred 6-7 times - and about 15 occurrences since then, life threatening danger to myself and my husband when with me. -Problem has not been reproduced by the dealer, but google this issue and many forums reference this "popping out of gear" problem. It is difficult to reproduce as it happens without warning, mostly at high speeds- no warning codes on the dash. . I have an '18 Expedition Limited 4WD. Issue occurs in 2Hmode, which I am always in. At highway speeds (70-85mph)while coasting, then attempting to accelerate(ie while trying to pass slower traffic) the car will lurch/make a clunk sound and "pop out of gear"(rpm's will rise as if in neutral and car won't accelerate). When I let off the gas, the transmission will lurch/make another loud clunk & engage a gear, then proceed to accelerate normally when I re-apply throttle. The clunk sounds are loud, jarring & alarming- like the engine is going to fall out. -No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem- although the most recent incident 8/27/23- a wrench flashed on the dash- and the engine sounded like a buzz saw was grinding metal off the engine under my car while it popped out of gear, would not accelerate while traffic has to swerve to avoid hitting me from behind. I am having to quickly engage my hazards and hope the car coming up behind has time to notice. It has continued to happen when I'm on the highway, usually when passing & it has been extremely dangerous because when the car pops out of gear- my brakes aren't engaged so no brake lights to warn other cars that suddenly, at 80 mph, I pulled into their lane to pass but am now decelerating to 50mph. I am fearful of my car unexpectedly losing ability to accelerate while another car slams into me from behind. I am scared to continue driving my car.

We were having issues with our transmission shifting very abruptly and making a clunking noise back in late June 2023. This was occurring as my wife was traveling out of state for a funeral to Michigan. We were able to drop the vehicle off at a certified mechanic in Ohio, and were told that they were metal shavings inside the transmission. The vehicle sat there for several weeks, waiting on a new/remanned transmission from a local Ford dealership. The transmission was replaced, and I flew back to Ohio to drive the vehicle back to Virginia in early August. At first, the vehicle was shifting and driving normally as it should. However, when I was near Richmond, Virginia, I had to change lanes to pass a semi, and when I pressed the gas, all power was lost and the lights on the dash went completely black. About 2 to 3 seconds later, the vehicle shifted with a loud clunk and the advance track warning light came on. The malfunction nearly caused an accident as vehicles behind me had to slam on their brakes, as I finally made my way to the shoulder of the road to collect myself.

The expedition started skipping gears and shifting hard, the shop had it for several weeks trying to determine issue. Their conclusion was the transmission so they just rebuilt it. That was in 2022. We returned it to the shop for the same issues only worse in July 2023 where it is still at now. They’ve said the technician has looked at it and knows it’s a transmission problem but has several with the same problem in front of mine so it will still be a while before they get to work on it.

Door locks don’t unlock on 3 out of 4 doors. Transmission jerks and acts like losing power frequently. Engine tries to die at idle when stopping. Timing chains failed along with cam phasers yet symptoms still continue. Heater hoses leak to heater core. This caused high temps of 255 degrees to occur for engine.

On 11/28/22 my transmission went out while I was driving at 25 mph. Luckily, I was in town and I was able to coast to the next driveway. It was towed to a dealership. The dealership replaced the transmission in January 2023. When I picked it up & was leaving the dealership, it began jumping gears and getting hot. A few miles down the road it started leaking transmission fluid. We immediately took it back to the dealership where they determined it was a faulty transmission and ordered another. A second new transmission was put in. I picked my expedition up from the dealership on February 23, 2023. Since having the 2nd new transmission installed, my car has shifted into neutral while driving on the highway causing my car to shake uncontrollably and jump gears once in drive. It is shifting hard during gear changes. Also, when shifting down & skipping gears, it is making a grinding noise and jumping hard. No warning lights have appeared at any time during this entire process. The expedition is going back to the dealership on 3/28/23 to reassess the issue.

The contact owns a 2018 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate while the transmission made abnormal sounds. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the failure was related to Technical Service Bulletin: 22-2145 (Momentary Neutral-Out Condition in Drive) however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.

As the vehicle accelerates it experiences a loss of power randomly at both low speeds and high speeds (like it randomly shifted into neutral) then after letting off the accelerator the vehicles clunks into gear. I experienced this at roughly 60k miles in both 2WD and less frequently in 4WD. It’s absolutely a safety hazard while driving on the roads.

Feb 18, 2023

10 speed transmission is eratic and can cause sudden loss of power or stuck in gear and slamming in and out of gears.

Feb 18, 2023

Transmission is hunting, popping, and jumping out of gear. Started popping into reverse at approximately 20,000 and multiple dealerships told me “I did not understand the transmission”. Power train warranty expired at 60K, at 62K it began violently shifting out of gear on acceleration.

Feb 17, 2023

My transmission stalls out multiple times while driving. It switches gears really rough. If my car stalls out at a light it could interfere with other drivers and could cause an accident. I have not taken it to a dealer yet but whoever rides in my car can feel the problems it’s causing. There is no warning lights or anything that come up.

Feb 11, 2023

Transmission will downshift from 8th gear to 2nd while driving 60mph also will go into park randomly at low speeds very dangerous to drive a hazard to my family and other drivers on the road!

There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called another local dealer, Middleton Ford (7520 Century Ave, Middleton, WI 53562; 608-831-7725) but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000.

Transmission shifting is spectacularly (not in a good way) erratic. Early shifts are fine when cold, incredibly hard when warm. Later shifts are extremely sluggish. Sometimes the transmission will disengage completely when accelerating in traffic, leading to nearly being rear ended by following vehicles. This is completely unacceptable and very, very dangerous. I've never owned a vehicle that acted this dangerous! One Google search of erratic Ford 10 speed transmission will send you to many websites with thousands of complaints. Since Ford will not stand behind this product, the federal government needs to take the reigns and protect the consumer purchasing this vehicle. Thank you.

Powertrain/ Transmission required replacement. Replacement transmission from the factory deemed defective and suffered a catastrophic failure in less than 24 hours after install.

Nov 10, 2022

Something is going on with the transmission we got it at dealer now it shifts funny 3 to 4 and 6to8 and sometimes you go to pull out and it revs up to 3000 rpm and don't move then it slam in gear and move and not all the time but sometimes you slow down you hear a crunching noises under expedition. If you stop fast it down shifts hard and if you go to move again it's like it's in a high gear it never shifted down .it's a 2018 10 speed transmission and if you read online ford has problems with them so why is it not a safety recall on this transmission before someone pulls out somewhere and gets kill because it won't move . It's a problem not a accident

my transmission shifted from first gear to second gear very hard causing the vehicle to lunge. My daughter is a new driver and it scared her so much that she stopped in traffic at a stop sign and I thought the vehicle was hit. my dash cam even recorded it as a possible collision (no one hit us just jerked that bad). I have only owned it for a month and when I took it to the dealer that I bought it from they said Ford knows they have a problem and it sucks. (dealerships words) I had no lamps or warnings come on at the time of the event. when I changed driving modes the vehicle went completely out of gear and would not go back into gear until I shut it down and started it back up.

Sep 8, 2022

Random gear shifts lead to dangerous changes in speed during normal driving. Example-Driving in 8th gear transmission shifted to 2nd and then jumped back to 6th gear causing near loss of control. Other times transmission sticks in-between gear resulting in a loss of power during driving. Dealer and independent service center have reproduced problem. Replaced value body per Ford's recommendation which did not fix the problem. Vehicle has not been inspected by police, insurance representative or manufacturer. Powertrain warning light did come on but after these issues were affecting the vehicle.

Aug 29, 2022

Vehicle with 80k miles. Transmission stuck in 2nd gear resulted in safety issue when merging with traffic. When this occurs the engine revs and then the transmission jumps into 8th gear. Once in 8th gear it is very slow to accelerate. If there’s any reason I need to decelerate, the transmission remains in 8th gear and will not shift back to 1st gear even if at a complete stop. Have been stopped at a traffic light and had to place the vehicle back in park and shut the engine off so the transmission will reset back to 1st.

Aug 23, 2022

If I have to decelerate and then quickly accelerate the car will lose power and restart. This typically happens when I’m driving on the highway in heavy traffic. I originally thought there was problem with the transmission because it would downshift to 5th gear and clunk (feels like the tranny fell off). It would then try and put itself into park and then power down and restart. The only error code ever given is a parking paw error. This makes sense because transmissions aren’t supposed to go into park at 70mph. Lately the vehicle is sluggish and doesn’t respond as I try to accelerate which leads to the shut down restart while moving. I recently read about the class action lawsuit and recall regarding ford throttle bodies in F-150s. The incidents in those reports mirror what I’ve experienced.

Aug 2, 2022

Transmission seems to get stuck in 2nd and 8-9 gear when driving and I have lost all ability to accelerate at both slow and high speeds. I am able to see the gear it gets stuck in since there is a visual on what gear the vehicle is in on the dashboard. When it appears to be stuck in a gear, if you hit the gas it does not respond and you lose your speed. RPMs increase. After a delay which there is no acceleration, it then kicks into the next gear with a large jolt that shakes the whole vehicle pretty harshly. I have expressed to Ford Corporation my concerns on safety and no one was behind me during the times this has happened. If there was someone behind me I feel that I could have easily get hit from behind especially at the higher rates of speed. SUV is currently at the dealer since the first 2 service bulletins have not corrected the issue. I have been dealing with this for almost 3 months.

I notice the vehicle shutters between 20-30mph Tried to get a appointment with ford nothing available till august . Went to Panama City shopping the other day with my son he could not believe how bad the vehicle lunges sometimes and sometimes it stalls before take off . Makes me very nervous to drive am I gonna get stranded in heavy traffic ? Call ford they said needs PCM reprogrammed she tried to make appt to no avail . She knew what I was talking bout when I called her .said you need to get it in right of way .Well dealerships say they are months out what do I do now . Ford is a disgrace 80,000 for vehicle and I have had numerous issues

May 8, 2022

During a routine trip on the highway, as I was trying to overtake a vehicle the SUV shifted from 10th gear to 1st and locked up the wheels. This left my vehicle unable to move for a few seconds while on the highway. I lost all throttle response, the vehicle lit up the wrench icon on the dash. The issue has been replicated at the ford dealership and there are currently 3 others in for repair for the same issue.

Jul 21, 2021

The vehicle "chatters" when starting first thing in the morning and sometimes after it sits for a few hours(when engine has had time to cool down). It started about two months ago. We recently took our Expedition to an independent mechanic to have it checked over prior to a road trip. Their diagnosis was a loose timing chain and their recommendation was to take it to a licensed Ford dealership. I contacted three local Ford dealerships and their estimated next available service dates were between 4 and 6 weeks. Plus they are having problems getting some parts. We bought vehicle used with 68,000 miles and did not buy extended service plan. We currently have 95,000 and local dealer advised this repair is not covered by Ford even though Ford Issued TSB 21-2119 acknowledging the problem and recommended fix.

I PULLED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY TAKING A LEFT AND AS I PRESSED THE GAS TO ACCELERATE UP THE HILL IT SEEMED AS THOUGH MY CAR WENT INTO NEUTRAL. IT WOULD NOT GO. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND WAITED A SECOND OR TWO AND THEN PUSHED DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR AGAIN AND THEN THE CAR TOOK OFF AS NORMAL. SINCE THAT FIRST TIME THIS SITUATION HAS BEGUN HAPPENING ALMOST DAILY SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. I HAVE TAKEN MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND OF COURSE THEY CAN NEVER GET IT TO DUPLICATE WHAT IT DOES TO ME. CONCERNING TO ME IS IF THIS HAPPENS WHEN I PULL INTO TRAFFIC AND CAN'T GET OUT OF THE WAY OF AN ONCOMING VEHICLE.

WE HAVE A 20018 FORD EXPEDITION PLATINUM, 2WD (REAR WHEEL DRIVE). BOUGHT BRAND NEW. FOR THE PAST MONTH WE'VE BEEN HAVING WHAT SEEMS LIKE TRANSMISSION ISSUES. CAR HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT. A FEW TIMES A DAY THE TRANSMISSION FAILS TO SHIFT AT ALL; ESSENTIALLY GOES IN-BETWEEN GEARS, REVS HIGH, BUT ABSOLUTELY NO MOVEMENT. USUALLY SOON AFTER MOVING FROM A START, SO MAYBE 2ND TO 3RD GEAR OR 3RD TO 4TH GEAR. IT HAPPENS WITHOUT ANY WARNING. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CARE BEING HOT OR COLD. IT IS VERY SCARY BECAUSE ONE OF THE TIMES, I HAD PULLED OUT FROM A GAS STATION ONTO A HIGHWAY, ACCELERATING NORMALLY TO KEEP UP WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC WITH I LOST ALL POWER TO THE WHEELS. ENGINE CONTINUED REVVING. THERE WAS NO TIRE SLIPPING - JUST NO MOVEMENT WHATSOEVER. TOOK IT INTO THE FORD DEALER (GOLDEN CIRCLE FORD) IN JACKSON TN WHERE THEY EVALUATED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THEY APPARENTLY PUT IT ON THE COMPUTER AND DROVE IT; AND WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY GAVE ME A RIDICULOUS EXPLANATION THAT THE VEHICLE IS 'LEARNING' (AKA "ADAPTING") TO MY DRIVING STYLE AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL BEHAVIOR. THAT WAS LAST WEEK. SINCE THEN, THE SHIFTING BETWEEN LOW GEARS HAS BECOME SOMEONE ROUGHER/ WITH SOME HESITANCY. I DID RESEARCH THESE VEHICLE AND APPARENTLY THERE MAY BE AN ISSUE WITH THE 10 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS NOW BEING USED IN THE F150 TRUCKS WITH MANY PEOPLE DESCRIBING SIMILAR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS A POTENTIAL ISSUE, THAT CAN ALSO BE VERY DANGEROUS IF THE CAR STOPS MOVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THANK YOU.

MY 2018 FORD EXPEDITION MAX 4X4 WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE ISSUE DESCRIBED IN TCB-20-2315 IN AUG 2019. THE REPAIR WAS DONE PER THE TCB AND COMPLETED IN OCT 2019. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP FOR 10 WEEKS AND I HAD TO RETURN IT 4 TIMES FOR ADDITIONAL REPAIRS UNTIL THE ISSUE WAS TEMPORARILY RESOLVED. THE PROBLEM REOCCURED IN JUL 2020 AND IT TOOK OVER 5 VISITS TO THE DEALERSHIP AND INTERVENTION FROM FORD CUST SERVICE TO GET THE VEHICLE REPAIRED IN DEC 2020. I HAVE ALREADY RETURNED THE VEHICLE AGAIN THIS TIME BECAUSE THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED AND NOW WILL NEED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE A THIRD TIME. THIS WILL MAKE 7 TOTAL ATTEMPTS TO GET THE VEHICLE FIXED FOR THE SAME ISSUE. FORD REFUSES TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE AND DENIED MY BUYBACK REQUEST. THIS VEHICLE IS A LEMON PLAIN AND SIMPLE. I FOLLOWED THE PROCEDURES PER STATE LAW IN NOTIFYING FORD AND ALLOWING THEM TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. CLEARLY, THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED AND THE REPAIR JUST COMPLETED IS JUST A REPEAT OF THE FIRST. THIS TIME, I WAS ON VACATION WITH MY FAMILY IN THE MOUNTAINS OF WEST VIRGINIA IN THE DEAD OF WINTER WITH WINDCHILLS OF MINUS 15 DEGREES. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND POWER TRAIN LIGHTS CAME ON, THE TURBO SHUT DOWN, AND WHITE SMOKE STARTED BILLOWING OUT OF THE TAILPIPE. WE COULD BARELY MAINTAIN SPEED ON INCLINES AND HAD TO STOP FOR LOW OIL PRESSURE MULTIPLE TIMES. WE COULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE WITH NO CELL RECEPTION. A PROBLEM I ANTICIPATED AND EXPRESSED TO FORD WHEN I RETURNED THE VEHICLE FOR THE SIXTH ATTEMPT. I WANT THE VEHICLE REPLACED WITH THE SAME VEHICLE THAT IS NOT DEFECTIVE. THAT IS ALL. WHY IS THIS SUCH A CHALLENGE FOR FORD TO SOLVE? I HAVE LITERALLY INVESTED HUNDREDS OF HOURS ATTEMPTING TO NAVIGATE THIS NIGHTMARE. ATTACHED IS THE LETTER I SENT FORD IN SEP 2020. THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE OPERATED SAFELY AND IS STUCK IN MY DRIVEWAY. I AM NOW WITHOUT A CAR.

UPON STARTUP, THE DASHBOARD MONITOR WILL NOT LIGHT UP AND THE TRANSMISSION WILL NOT GO INTO GEAR. THIS INCLUDES NO BACKUP CAMERAS, RADIO, MAPPING FEATURE, OR HANDS FREE BLUETOOTH ON THE MONITOR, WHILE THE DASHBOARD (DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE STEERING WHEEL AREA) FLASHES ON/OFF THAT "TRANSMISSION NOT IN PARK", OR "OIL NEEDS TO BE CHANGED", YET THE TRANSMISSION IS STUCK IN PARK. AFTER TRYING SEVERAL TIMES TO MANUALLY PUT THE CAR INTO "DRIVE" IT WILL FINALLY START MOVING FORWARD WITH A GRINDING SOUND, BEFORE COMING TO AN ABRUPT STOP. THIS SEQUENCE OCCURS SEVERAL TIMES, UNTIL I TURN THE CAR OFF AND TRY AGAIN. IT SOMETIMES TAKES 4-5 ATTEMPTS OVER 5-10 MINUTES TO GET THE CAR MOVING WITH ALL ITEMS WORKING PROPERLY. ELECTRONIC DIAL SHIFTER WILL AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH FROM DRIVE TO PARK IF THE VEHICLE START STOP BUTTON IS DEPRESSED WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. THE PARKING BRAKE ALSO AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES ON AT THE SAME TIME. CONSIDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF A 2018 FORD EXPEDITION IS TRAVELING ON A FREEWAY IN TRAFFIC AND THE START STOP BUTTON WERE ACCIDENTALLY DEPRESSED. THE CAR WOULD SHIFT INTO PARK, THE PARKING BRAKE WOULD ENGAGE AND THE DRIVER WOULD DECELERATE RAPIDLY FROM 65 MPH TO A STOP WITH NO NOTICE, LIKELY BEING REAR ENDED BY TRAFFIC IE; A SEMI TRUCK AT HIGHWAY SPEED. THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTER SHOULD STAY IN THE SELECTED GEAR WHEN THE START STOP BUTTON IS DEPRESSED AS A CONVENTION SHIFTER WOULD, ELECTRIC OR MECHANICAL. I DETERMINED THIS AFTER GOING TO A CAR WASH, PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL THEN DEPRESSING THE STOP BUTTON TO SAVE FUEL. THE CARIMMEDIATELY SHIFTED FROM NEUTRAL TO PARK AND ENGAGED THE PARKING BRAKE. I TESTED THE DRIVE, START BUTTON OFF, IMMEDIATELY SWITCHES TO PARK ON A FLAT STREET AT ZERO SPEED. I REALIZED AS AN ENGINEER THAT IF THIS HAPPENED AT SPEED A FATAL ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR. FORD CAN REMOVE THIS RISK WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE ELECTRONIC SHIFTING, LEAVING THE CAR IN THE SELECTED GEAR IF THE START STOP BUTTON IS DEPRESSED.

Oct 31, 2018 Crash

THE TRUCK WAS BEING BACKED INTO A PARKING SPOT ,THE TRUCKS TURNED OFF I PUSHED THE PEDAL TO START THE TRUCK TO BACK UP AND IT PROPELLED INTO THE WALL OF THE ESTABLISHMENT THAT I WAS GOING INTO TO EAT DINNER CAUSING A GREAT DEAL OF DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING AND MY VEHICLE. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THIS PROBLEM NOT BEING LOOKED INTO. I HAVE A FAMILY AND WE ALL RIDE IN THIS TRUCK I WOULD NEVER WANT TO PUT THERE LIVES IN DANGER KNOWING THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM GOING ON WITH THESE TRUCKS.
