While driving, the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of power, after which the transmission goes into what feels like a false neutral. It then violently re-engages and accelerates uncontrollably without driver input. This is an extremely dangerous situation and presents a major safety risk to us and to others on the road. Fortunately, we were able to avoid a crash, but this could have easily resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle was initially brought to the dealership for an A/C issue, and at that time we asked that this transmission concern also be inspected. We were informed that the dealership could not replicate the problem. Since then, the issue has become more frequent and more severe. We have now been told that we can drop the vehicle off, but that it may take 3–4 weeks or longer before diagnostics even begin, and that we would be responsible for out-of-pocket rental car costs during this time. We were also told that because the issue could not previously be replicated, this would now be considered customer pay, despite the fact that this is a serious powertrain and safety-related issue. We find this unacceptable. This is not a convenience issue—it is a known concern with Ford’s 10-speed transmissions, and it places our safety at risk every time the vehicle is driven. We have opened a case with Ford in hopes that assistance will be provided, including: Proper diagnosis and repair of the transmission issue Coverage of related repair costs Assistance with a rental vehicle while the SUV is being evaluated, as it is currently unsafe to drive We trust Ford to stand behind its product and take this issue seriously before someone is injured.

2019 Ford Expedition Max with the 10R80 transmission experienced severe shifting issues shortly after PCM recall 24E13 was performed. The recall involves PCM/TCM updates and adaptive shift strategy reset. After the recall, the vehicle developed shuddering, harsh shifting, flaring between gears, and delayed engagement. Dealer diagnosis found internal transmission damage including CDF hub sleeve axial movement and No. 3 sun gear shell seal failure, along with diagnostic code P07E6. These failures are known on the 10R80, but the issue escalated immediately after the recall update. Transmission required a full overhaul. Concern that the recall calibration and adaptive strategy reset may accelerate internal wear or exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities in the 10R80 transmission.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25E070000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that the transmission was slipping while driving and shifting into gear, and an unknown warning light was flashing. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds on uneven pavement or over a minor bump in the roadway, the rear of the vehicle was jumping and the vehicle became slightly unstable, causing occupants or items in the rear passenger’s seats to bounce. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle made an abnormal rattling sound at start-up. The contact stated that the fuel pump was only pumping fuel at 33% and DTC: P00C6 was retrieved. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the timing chain was stretched, and the valve cover was leaking. Additionally, the vehicle was diagnosed with the left catalytic converter, rear shocks and struts, timing chain, valve covers, fuel pump, and transmission failures. The parts were replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

My 2019 Ford Expedition started making some loud noises while accelerating and wouldn’t accelerate as usual when I pressed the gas pedal — there was a noticeable delay in gear shifting and acceleration. Often when I did shift gears, there would be a very loud clunking sound. It got much worse over the course of several days. At one point, I was on the highway and needed to accelerate quickly to maneuver around other vehicles —I pressed the gas and there was no acceleration— the vehicle just stayed at the current speed and it was a couple beats before the vehicle responded to me pressing down hard in the gas pedal. It did finally accelerate, but it was very delayed. It was a very unsafe experience. I have since learned there is a known issue with the transmission on these vehicles that causes this issue.

Nov 7, 2025

When you try to accelerate quickly, even when you’re switching lanes on the interstate or just driving down the road, the car will sometimes pop out of gear or something and almost comes to a complete stop causing you to almost get rear ended. I’ve almost been hit several times because the car stops and won’t go.

ford knowingly put in a faulty CDF drum to cut corners and make more profit (hence the class action lawsuit) and transmission shifts erratically (1-3-5-10-1-6) safety concern. loss of power while driving

Oct 22, 2025

I was driving and felt a clunk in transmission and lost power and almost got rear ended. The wrench light came on so I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. I restarted and it ran fine but the transmission is dangerous, I don't want that to happen again. The transmission constantly hard shifts. This was at 2am in the morning when I was driving from FL to MD.

Oct 11, 2025 Crash

I purchased a 2019 Ford Expedition Max from Rivertown Ford – Group 1 Automotive (Columbus, GA) in 2022. During the test drive, I heard a rattling noise at startup and was told by my salesperson, Derrick, that it was just a “cold start.” I was shown a CarFax report claiming no recalls or major repairs. I later discovered this was false. An internal Ford OASIS report revealed that transmission work had been performed before sale, which Rivertown Ford never disclosed or reported to CarFax. Since purchase, my Expedition has had harsh shifting, delayed gear engagement, jerking, and sudden loss of acceleration, often without diagnostic codes—making it difficult to obtain warranty repairs under my Ford ESP plan. Rivertown Ford told me the transmission backlog meant I’d have to pay for my own rental vehicle and wait indefinitely for a technician. In March 2024, the vehicle shifted into neutral instead of drive while backing out of a driveway, rolling down uncontrollably and hitting two trees. Neither USAA (my insurer) nor Ford acknowledged that this incident matched the 10R80 transmission defect and TSB 23-2249 (Nov 2023), which addresses uncommanded neutral engagement and loss of power. I was never notified of this defect. My insurance labeled it an “at-fault” accident, raising my premiums drastically. My Expedition is now being serviced for TSB 23-2249 after new video evidence and stored code P07E06-00 confirmed the defect. Ford’s OASIS system—which hides warranty and powertrain repairs from the public—enabled this concealment. This issue has caused financial loss, emotional distress, and fear of driving, especially as this is our only family vehicle for transporting our children. I have video, audio, photos, and documentation proving these events and request NHTSA’s investigation into Ford’s 10R80 transmission defects and disclosure practices.

After Ford Recall 24E13 (Powertrain Control Module reprogramming) was completed on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, the vehicle immediately developed transmission problems. It began hesitating to go into reverse and then produced DTC P0736 (reverse gear ratio incorrect). Within days, it failed to shift properly and was returned by the dealership. The issue occurred only after the recall repair, indicating a possible calibration or programming fault that affected the powertrain. Ford dealership staff acknowledged metal in the fluid but gave inconsistent explanations and then claimed the transmission had to be replaced. The vehicle also displayed a “Powertrain System Fault” warning. No such problems existed before the recall. This raises a safety concern because transmission malfunction after a recall could cause loss of control or failure to move the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to us on October 7, 2025; it remains unsafe to drive. Ford Corporate has been notified (Case CXH-05773791-T4G0R8), but no resolution has been provided. I am requesting NHTSA review this as a potential post-recall powertrain safety failure related to Recall 24E13.

Oct 3, 2025

The Cam Phaser failed in 2023 and 2025. It kept the vehicle from starting. The transmission has failed twice in the past two years.

Sep 30, 2025

Ford 10 speed automatic transmission. Driving at highway speeds the vehicle suddenly went into limp mode. This dropped the vehicle speed from 70 mph to 20 mph without warning. A flashing wrench indicator light on the dash illuminated. A grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle occurred. Our vehicle has an extended warranty. The vehicle was dropped off at the dealership it was purchased from. Dealership stated the separator plate inside the transmission was defective and needed replaced. The work was completed and the vehicle has been returned to us. This could have caused a significant accident on the freeway. Luckily with experienced drivers this was avoided.

Sep 24, 2025

In June 2024, my 2019 Ford Expedition experienced serious transmission and powertrain problems. Diagnostic testing identified catalyst efficiency codes (P0430), and I was given a repair estimate that included catalytic converter replacement. The vehicle also displayed repeated “Service Engine Soon” and “Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power” warnings. Because the vehicle became undrivable and the repair costs were unaffordable, I was forced to release it to auction in June 2024, resulting in a significant financial loss. In April 2025, Ford issued Recall 24E13 acknowledging that PCM programming errors could falsely trigger catalyst efficiency codes (such as P0430), potentially leading to unnecessary catalytic converter replacements, exactly the condition my vehicle experienced. This recall defect directly contributed to the loss I suffered, as I still owed about $11,000 on the vehicle when I could no longer use it. I have already opened a case with Ford (Case #CXH05645573C2W6R6), but I have not received meaningful assistance. When I contacted Ford Customer Service, I was not offered escalation or resolution. I was only told to call another phone number, which left my case unresolved. I respectfully request that NHTSA review Ford’s handling of this defect, including the financial impact on owners like myself who incurred substantial losses before the recall was announced.

I purchased my 2019 Ford Expedition Max Limited on [XXX]. When we purchase the vehicle we signed a notice that we would have the recalls completed within a reasonable time. I took my vehicle for the recall to Feyer Ford in Edenton, North Carolina on May 30th. Prior to the recall I was having no issues at all with the vehicle. Once I pick the vehicle up on [XXX] and started my traveling home. Within 10 minutes of leaving, the vehicle made a loud screeching noise. The wrench light came on, and the vehicle seemed to not accelerate forward. I was able to pull off the road and turn the vehicle off. I called Feyer Ford to make them aware of the problem and they told me that it was because the PCM had been reprogrammed and would need to relearn how I drive. I had the same issue happen again further down the road, this is a very serious safety hazard that my vehicle suddenly stopped moving forward in traffic. I called Feyer Ford once again and was told that I had to drive the vehicle 1,000 miles before the PCM would relearn my driving patterns. I took the vehicle in on June 4th to have it checked out and was told that I would need a valve body replacement and torque converter replacement. That essentially my transmission was bad. Since that date the vehicle has gone into reverse numerous times when I put it in Drive, it will also get stuck in 4th 7th or 10th gear when you are trying to drive it in a parking lot or going slow on the road. When it gets stuck in those gears the vehicle will not go forward it will only allow you to go backwards. My car has been at Feyer Ford since July 29 trying to have the warranty cover the fix, but it was denied for warranty coverage because they stated the vehicle was broken by the recall. We were told we could pick up our un-fixed vehicle on Aug 27. We got the key and proceeded to leave only to find the car not put back together from a different seat belt recall. It is still at Feyer Ford today, September 6th 2025. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA),

The transmission is clunking and hard shifting causing the car to not just go when you accelerate. The car stutters and takes a minute to actually go when you press the accelerator. This has caused multiple times where pulling out of a parking lot has been dangerous since I can’t properly get up and go when need be. I had a mechanic look at my car and he confirmed my transmission needs to be replaced. There was no warning signs or messages about the failure.

The 10 Speed Transmission, also known as 10R80, is absolutely horrible and should be banned. I have had Ford rebuild the transmission more than once and also fully replaced with multiple shop visit with other trans issues. Constant jerking, poor shifting, delayed gear recognition, slipping gears while going highway speeds, are all causes for great concern. I am worried all the time that I may get in an accident with one of the skipping that occurs several times monthly. This Trans must be fully recalled due to its safety! This is a major safety issue. Who wants to pay $90,000.00 on a car to have constant transmission issues and jerky driving? This jerking has been worsening again lately and worried I need another trans repair. This happened again today which brings me to this complaint as Ford wont fiix the issue, needing a new style trans altogether!

Aug 7, 2025

Passenger air bag light came on and passenger seat belt locked up also the transmission had to be fixed

Jul 29, 2025

Issues with the transmission (10R80) started in May 2025 around 79,000 miles, and lasted a few weeks before we could get to the Ford dealer. We have not towed anything or taken the vehicle off roading. We experienced very hard shifting, delayed acceleration, lurching, and loss of power. We were unable to drive the vehicle without one or more of these things consistently happening. One lurch was particularly violent where our momentum carried us forward while the vehicle slowed dramatically. The loss of power was particularly dangerous because I pulled into traffic and then shifting failed and I couldn’t move. I was stuck in the middle of the road until the gears cycled and eventually started working again. The loss of power also happened to my wife. The transmission issues appeared quickly and then rapidly became worse. We took it to Ford and they said the transmission needed replaced. This would allegedly be better than trying to fix it piece by piece. Apparently Ford could potentially help with costs if I submitted a case, but they would want to try to diagnose and fix it first. This meant being without the vehicle for an extended period and then having to return it to the shop if the part fixed didn’t solve the issue. This is unreasonable given that others online reported similar issues and the “fixes” often did not work. We did not have any dashboard lights illuminate as part of our issues. We had the transmission replaced.

Jul 16, 2025

While attempting to accelerate and change lanes on the freeway, the vehicle unexpectedly slipped out of gear and appeared to shift into neutral. During this time, the gas pedal became completely unresponsive, leaving me unable to control the vehicle’s speed. Multiple warning lights and audible alerts activated briefly before disappearing. I released the gas pedal and attempted to accelerate again, at which point the vehicle re-engaged and resumed normal function. This issue first occurred approximately one month ago and has now happened two additional times. Each incident lasted several seconds during active freeway driving, creating a highly dangerous situation where I had no control over acceleration. This poses a serious safety risk, especially when merging or maneuvering in high-speed traffic. Although no accident has occurred yet, the potential for one is significant and deeply concerning.

Transmission failure, skipping, and stalling. It can be inspected. My family and Is safety was put at risk when the transmission started stalling out while leaving the exit ramp to turn onto a busy road with constant traffic. As soon as the acceleration pedal was pressed after leaving the stop sign stalling occurred and again at the following stop light upon acceleration. Yes the problem has been confirmed by a dealership. It has not been inspected by the police, insurance, or others. No warning before hand other than it would skip certain gears and jerk really hard.

Jun 30, 2025

I noticed that the car would make a clunking noise changing Drive to Reverse (vice versa) and had informed the dealership upon getting car checked up for cold start rattle issues that sounded like stemming from cam phaser. Dealer didn't comment on it. Over time, I felt it getting worse. Now at about 51,400 on my drive home on the freeway close to my exit, luckily, I felt the car vibrantly shaking (during drive and slow down). After exiting the freeway, I noticed car (and steering wheel) shaking vibrantly when going 25 mph and over. After taking it to a local mechanic, they found that the driveshaft was about to come off missing a part.

Jun 28, 2025

Was returning home from a drive on a freeway and noticed that car started shaking violently on right side rear of vehicle, like tires were loose, when I was close to the exit. Upon exiting freeway I noticed that vehicle at 20mph speeds+ (more noticeable at 25mph+) the car began shaking. Car shakes as well throughout braking. I took it to the tire shop to see if it was a tire issue or a balance issue, but the shop informed it wasn't a tire issue but possibly a CV related. Because I'm feeling the vibrations more from one side of vehicle, thinking it could be related to the toe link. Seeing car parked on driveway, it does seem to be leaning more to the right in the rear of the vehicle

Expedition with 60k miles needing timing chain, cam phasers, 4 camshafts, valves and rockers. This has been a on going issue with 3.5 ecoboost engines. Ford needs a recall and reimbursement to owners for these costly repairs.

Jun 24, 2025

We purchased the 2019 Ford Expedition Limited from Interstate Ford in Miamisburg, OH, for $49,500 in 2023. The vehicle had roughly 47k miles on it at the time; it now has 69k. I started noticing that it was downshifting when I pulled out of my driveway and got about a block away from home shortly after our purchase. I reported this to the dealership several times, and they said they could not get it to replicate the problem. I explained that it was only happening when the engine was cold. Fast forward to June 2025, I was at the intersection one morning, and the vehicle would not move forward. Then it lurched forward suddenly, from that point, I started having more issues with 1st & 2nd gears. I took it to Germain Ford in Beavercreek, and they evaluated the issue and determined that I need a new transmission. This was submitted to Ford, and the replacement was approved, but it appears my extended warranty will have to cover the charges. I have noticed that several other people have reported the same issues with their 2019 models. Ford should cover this repair at no cost to us; that's just my opinion.

Jun 16, 2025

Transmission 10R80 2017-2023 is prone to jerking, sudden power loss, complete failure, hard shifts and random downshifts. Ford knows that this issue exists but fails to issue a recall. The main issue is with the CDF drum. Ford came out with a new CDF Drum in 2023 to remedy the issue. But fails to cover any costs to fix it. To get to the CDF drum a complete transmission tear down is required. Ford is involved in multiple class action lawsuits and has even issued a TSB (22-2428) but again, fails to cover any costs.

Jun 15, 2025

Transmissions CDF Drum is failing annd causing my transmission to go out of gear and slam into first and I just preformed “cam phaser” repairs exceeding $3400. A vehicle this new should not need these repairs. There’s 1000s of complaints online and it’s sick and twisted that Ford is not forced to recall these issues.

The transmission has completely failed. My wife pulled out into traffic and it failed to engage.

Jun 9, 2025

While driving the 2019 Ford Expedition the transmission intermittently has an issue where there is harsh or extreme delayed engagement and loss of power. This has occurred while attempting to merge on the highway in traffic and put myself and highway drivers at risk when it suddenly was not possible to accelerate to merge safely. The component was inspected by the Ford dealer and their response was to re-program the transmission software, however this has not resolved the issue and it still occurs. There were no warning lamps or indicator to show that the vehicle has a problem.

Jun 5, 2025

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started in the morning, the engine was idling roughly while making an abnormal rattling sound. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent, but the rattling sound became worse and more frequent. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 (Engine and Engine Cooling) for cam phaser replacement. The contact questioned the dealer and was informed that the vehicle was not covered under the program. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was recently repaired under Customer Satisfaction Program: 24E13 for an ignition and TCM (Power Train) software update. The contact stated that following the software update, the transmission was slipping out of gear and was hesitating while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was returned to the same dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission shift cable bushing had failed, and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 69,401.

May 30, 2025

Traveling at approximately 65 MPH and the transmission slipped into neutral and we began to lose speed while the engine freely revved, then it slammed back into gear violently. Then about an hour later on the same trip it did it again, except this time when it slammed into gear the rear tires lock up and we were nearly rear ended, luckily they swerved over in time. The wheels then unlocked and the vehicle drove mostly normal after that. The shifts were of poor quality from time to time, and we are out of state with no choice but to continue for the week. It seemed to happen when trying to increase speed, so now I am very gingerly speeding up when needed. We will get it in for service as soon as we get home next week.

May 12, 2025

It's not just the f150 with transmission issues. My 2019 expedition has had the same transmission issues since I bought it with 48000 miles. Most of the hard downshifts happen at highway speeds, but also occur at other times. I've taken it in at least 6 times for this issue with no remedy before the transmission failed at 102000 miles. That cost me $7100 to repair the transmission and $1000 in rental car costs. I have 113000 miles now and the same issues are occurring.

May 12, 2025

While driving the vehicle will all of a sudden will come out of gear, he can hear grinding, when the rpms eventually slow down will go into neutral and can then be put back into gear. This happens in normal driving conditions, it happens while at cruising highway speeds bit more often happens while stepping into the gas to pass someone. You lose all power and is extremely dangerous! This has been happening since at least 2022 with vehicle since around 55k miles and continues now at 105k. During city driving it usually is just a harder shift which always seems to be around 4th,5th 6th gear which is same on hwy when it downshifts to around the same to pass someone. For ford to issue a tsb and not be recalled yet is unfathomable with how dangerous this can potentially be! Pictures attached is from around time we first started to experience the issue with 56k 04/10/2022 and 59k 06/06/2022 on vehicle. Other two are from me having them look at it for said issue with no resolution! Last is most recent with them recommending me to get transmission flushed.will be returning to shop on 5/23/2025 for same issue. There are numerous times in between these that this issue has happened as well but with wife driving and this happing definitely angered me and scared her to not want to drive it anymore with most recent event on Friday 5/9/2025!

May 3, 2025

We had been driving for 3 hours and was in an extremely busy area in Houston, Tx. While entering another highway in extremely congested area the transmission shifted out of gear into Neutral engine revved and shut down. After about 3 -5 seconds it kicked hard into gear and continues on our way. This has happened several times in the past and was taken in previously for same problem. By being in congested traffic and with cars speeding around and honking horns it was a tense moment. Reported to dealer and transmission was dismantled and a part replaced in the transmission. Still don't feel comfortable with the transmission. Prior to this incident there were no immediate warning signs.

May 1, 2025

My 2019 Ford Expedition Max is experiencing shifting issues from first to second gear. After some extensive research i found that Ford is aware of this problem and issued a TSB for this back in 2023 TSB number 22-2428. I spoke to the dealership, and they stated they were aware of the ongoing issue and there is not a recall for it yet and most of the time unless its life threatening there will not be recall. I find that very disturbing, your vehicle not changing gears is life threatening. Not sure how we can get this investigated and made a recall.

10 Speed transmission slipped out of gear twice while driving Vehicle has 39,000 miles but 5.5 years old. Dealership and Ford acknowledge the transmission is a problem but is out of warranty and I need to spend $10,000 for repair. I believe they are selling defective cars to consumers and will not help to resolve the issue especially with such low mileage. They should be placed on recall. An independent transmission repair company tells me these 10 speed cars are commonly seen and cannot be repaired. The internet is full of owners with similar problem

Apr 18, 2025

Very delayed shift from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th gear. Sometimes jumping out of gear when attempting to pass or using the interstate on ramp.

Apr 16, 2025

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted. In addition, there was an unknown warning light illuminated, with a message to “Contact the Dealer” displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the previous learning strategy was erased and deleted from the computer system. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 106,000.

2019 FORD EXPEDITION THAT HAS BEEN IN FOR PAST TRANSMISSION ISSUES WITH NO PROBLEMS FOUND. FORD IS NOW TELLING ME I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND OF COURSE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY. ISSUES ARE WHEN AT A STOP AND ACCELARATING THE VEHICLE SHAKES AS IF YOU ARE GOING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS. ALSO, AT HWY SPEEDS WHEN ACCELERATING TO CHANGE LANES THE TRANSMISSION WILL COMPLETELY LOSS POWER AND ENGINE WILL REV THEN IT WILL JUMP BACK IN GEAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND I AM LUCKY THIS HASNT ENDED IN AN ACCIDENT. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS WARNING OF THE PROBLEM. I SEE SEVERAL TSB'S THAT FORD HAS PUT OUT BUT NO RECALL. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD JUMP INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DOING 50MPH. FORD KNOWS THIS AND THEY ARE NOT ISSUING A RECALL. THIS WILL BE THE LAST FORD I EVER OWN.

Mar 27, 2025

When driving the vehicle shifts very hard and has a loud clanging in second and fifth gear. It skips those gears and will lag in intersections and on roadways because of the skip. Had it diagnosed by a transmission shop and they said it needed cam phasers. Took it to the dealer and the said it needed a new valve body as the issue was repeatable. Had the valve body replaced and it is still doing it and even worse. No lights came on, and we bought the vehicle used with 81k miles on it and we noticed it right away, so the dealer did a “reprogram” of the software and said it was fine. It started to do it again right away and we called the dealer and they would not return our call. We drove it because we had too until it got bad enough we didn’t feel safe driving it anymore and now it is waiting for the hopes that a new transmission will fix the issue.

Vehicle has a rattle upon starting. Also the vehicle is shifting harshly and slipping. Sometimes the vehicle will stop accelerating in the middle of the road, or when accelerating from a stopped position. The RPMs will rise but the vehicle stops having power and the gear indicator moves up and down until it clicks back into a gear and the vehicle will go again. I have had the vehicle examined by a technician and have been told that it is the cam phasers, CDF drum/transmission, and torque converter. Ford will not honor any warranty or cover the cost of these repairs.

The transmission has delays in shifting up and down causing unpredictable ability to accelerate when entering highways in front of speeding vehicles. The Ford technician confirmed the issue and stated that ultimately, the transmission could fail at anytime. The Ford technician strongly encouraged me to replace the transmission after his the dealership inspected the vehicle and were able to replicate the problem. This was an out of pocket expense. Ford has detailed this failure in Technical Service Bulletin 25-2023 which states Harsh engagement Delayed engagement Harsh shift Delayed shift

My 2019 Ford expedition started making a rattling noise when starting the engine, the noise continued to get louder and the engine beagn to make a knocking noise when idling, and trouble starting when cold. I was ouyt of warrenty by a few thousand miles when I had to bring it to be repaired and I was told the cam phasers were faulty and it was a known issue even though Ford not issuing a recall. In my vehicle there was a spring missing and parts loose that dislodged into the engine that could cause it to get caught distroying the entire motor while driving which could seriously injure not just the driver but loose control of car and cause major accident. Doing research this seems to been a common issue in the Ford expedition 2018-2020. There should be a recall for faulty part not just if your still covered under warrenty, it is a serious malfuntion that can really cause bad accident that is not a service or operator error that causes a malfunctioning/breaking of cam phasers.

SIX WEEKS AGO MY TRANSMITION START JUMPING WHEN IT SHIFTED GEARS. THE EXPEDITION ONLY HAS 82, 212 MILES ON IT. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE RAN A DIAGNOSTICS TEST AND GOT A CODE P2701, WHICH IS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT. I TOOK IT TO A SECOND MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING. HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER FIRST TO SEE IF THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM. HAD HIM DO A FULL TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT. THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IT HAS GOTTEN WORST AND NOW JUMPS AND HESITATES WHEN SHIFTING GEARS ALL THE TIME, WHICH IS DANGEROUS. CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DELIVER AND THEY SAID THERE WERE NOT ANY RECALLS AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO UNDER ANY WARRENTIES. THEY ALSO STATED THEY WERE AWARE THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION BUT THERE WAS NOTHING COULD DO WITHOUT A RECALL FROM FORD. THEY SAID THEY COULD REPLACE THE TRANSMISSIN FOR AROUND $8000-$9000 DOLLARS. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND A NUMBER OF VECHICLES WITH THIS TRANSMSSION HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION JUMPING AND HESITATING. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND COULD CAUSE A DIFFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM AND EVEN CAUSE A WRECK AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR EVEN DEATH WITH THIS PROBLEM. FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE AN IMMEDIATE RECALL FOR ALL THESE TRANSMITIONS.

1. My Transmission failed and the car came to a complete stop in the middle of the highway, ford could not assist in replacing the Transmission and I have heard so many complaints about the 10 speed transmissions failing just after reaching 100,000 mileage. Mine failed under 108,000 mileage and this has been going on for years and consumers end up spending thousands of dollars on a $70,000 vehicle. This issue needs to be addressed. I paid over $8,000 to replace the transmission. 2. Ford Expeditions and F150 have a trim piece on the center console that's covered by an aluminum wrap which pops off and it's very sharp, so many ford owners have been cut by that piece and ford only replaces the whole center console if the vehicle is under warranty as there's no other solution to replace only the trim but you get to replace the whole center console which's Expensive. 3. For 3.5L engines have continued to have cam phaser failure for the past few years but Ford doesn't seem to address this issue which cost customers millions of dollars every year, we the customers do know that Ford benefits from selling parts and Ford 100% knows how expensive it's to replace a cam phaser which cam cost anywhere from $4,000 in parts and labor. We hope that NHTSA can step up and have ford address these issues.

When driving on a highway we went to pass a slower moving vehicle. When pulling out into the oncoming lane to accelerate the automatic transmission slipped into neutral. This situation became dangerous because there was a vehicle coming at us and we had to break to get back behind the slower vehicle. However the transmission did go back into gear causing us to become a hazard to the vehicles behind us. Again this happened on the interstate when accelerating to get on the interstate. This is a known problem by Ford and has been documented many times. Ford claims that since the vehicle is past the warranty period they aren't responsible to repair.

The 10 speed transmission has harsh shifting, jerking, hesitation, slipping, delayed gear changes and lurching forward while driving. The issue is apparent typically between 3rd and 4th gear, and 6th and 7th gear. The dealership mentioned it was a computer programming issue and has reset it twice, but the car continues to have these issues. Apparently this issue is cause by the way the drum was manufactured according this Ford Technician: [XXX] If it's a known issue, and it was fixed in the newer models, I hope Ford does a recall to replace. I was on the freeway going between 65-70mph when I felt a hard shift and lost all acceleration. The truck started to slow down and the wrench light came on. I was able to coast to the shoulder and turn my hazards on while the wrench light and warnings were going. I parked the truck and waited for my husband to help. The truck sat for approximately 20 minutes when it was turned back on. There were no lights on the dash and the wrench warning went away [XXX] husband was able to drive it home. I had my three kids in the truck and it was a terrifying experience. I took it to get scanned and it gave us a throttle body code. My vehicle supposedly isn't affected but this experience tells me that myself and my kids are in more danger than what is being claimed. This appears to be a common problem when I researched it online. When trying to accelerate hard, the transmission will suddenly go to neutral instead of shifting. This causes a pause in accelerating when you need. It will then slam in to gear a few seconds later with various warnings about the transmission showing on the dash. I have had the vehicle inspected right after an incident that happened and there are no codes though you have warnings that temporarily show on the dash when it happens. The most recent incident was on the freeway while changing lanes to go around slower traffic and caused the person behind us to have to hit their brakes since the vehicles was unable to accelerate and even slowed instead for several seconds.

On three separate occasions, my vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The first time I was attempting to pass slow moving farm equipment when my vehicle lost power, had a loud vibrating/rattling noise and multiple dashboard warnings flashed. Luckily, I was able to merge back into my lane and pull off the side of the road. I took the vehicle in for service and was told I needed new phasers. Once I got my vehicle back, I was still experiencing issues. Fortunately, the next two times my vehicle lost power I was driving at low speeds. I did have my kids with me on one occasion and it scared them quite a bit. I am not sure what the loud noise is but they stopped riding with me after that. Thank goodness I was not driving my family on the highway when experiencing a power failure. My vehicle is back at a dealership waiting for a new transmission.

I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes. Check lines although I do have a coolant / water hose leakage, which I order the part for. Ford needs to address this issue. They did a programming adjustment in 2021, and then did replacements only if you had continued issues up until Jan 2023. I have issues now, and they are telling me I am not covered. The cam phasers have been redesigned so they know they installed poorly designed parts originally. This is an almost $4,000 repair.

Transmission is shifting hard around 4th or 5th gear. It is lagging as well causing the car not to accelerate when needed causing safety concern while driving in traffic. The cam phasers on my vehicle need replaced, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I took the vehicle to Ford initially and was told "they didn't have a mechanic" that could address the issue on a Saturday, and completely dismissed the concern and only changed my oil. I have since had two separate mechanics diagnose the problem, and each independently determined the cam phasers are the issue. My safety isn't at risk, as I understand it the cam phasers aren't a safety issue. I was told by Ford that they couldn't answer my questions or help me, and was directed to contact NHTSA with my concern. There are no warning lamps or messages; the problem was identified by the audible noise presented at start up. I contacted Ford after I became aware that there were CSP's issued with regard to the CAM phasers, but Ford stated my VIN wasn't assigned to the CSP. However, the CSP identifies a specific build plant, and build date, both of which my vehicle falls under. So there is no plausible explanation for how they did not assign my VIN to the CSP, therefore I was not notified back in 2022 or 2023 of the issue, so I had no chance to rectify the issue when the problems occurred, nor was I made aware that this issue might arise.

My Ford Expedition Max started to make a rattling noise after I start the vehicle, if the car was running for a while I could turn it off and on again and wouldnt hear the noise, but if the engine was cold it would make a rattling noise when started. Then if I do not let the SUV warm up long enough and start driving it would have a point where it would do a random hard slow down before it would kick into gear and then it would feel like it was running fine. This started a few weeks ago the I was driving on the highway and while i was doing about 55MPH the suv made a loud noise that made the vehicle change speed dramatically it cause me to be whiplashed forward before the engine seemed to catch back up to its orevious actions, it did not actually cause an accident at that point (but it very well could have if the road was busy as it was a dramatic chnage in speed as well as the noise it made). I pulled over to inspect but there was nothing in the road and nothing that was being done that seemed to cause the traumatic issue. The next day when I brought the car to the mechanic and explained the issue he was able to diagnose an issue with the timing chain. Upopn some resaerch there many complaints and issues with my that make/models particular engine and parts that have had issues but the dealer would not assist saying there is no formal recall and at 69K miles I am over the warrenty. My car doesnot have any codes or warning lights and has all regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs done regularly but the car is clearly not driving correctly, This issue is causing the SUV to dramatically change speed while driving which is likely to cause an accident and severe injury.

While driving on the highway, and the vehicle tries to downshift, the transmission makes a loud clunking sound and shifts into neutral, causing the vehicle to slow rapidly while driving. Warning lights appear on the dash as this occurs, and the vehicle sits in neutral for 15 to 30 seconds, leaving you without acceleration while stuck on the road. This has happened 3 times in a short amount of time, and has put us and our cars children in an incredibly dangerous situation each time. On the third time, while trying to figure out what happened, we realized this is a known issue that Ford has recalled on other models (F150) but has fought recalling on the Expedition. Both the F150 and the Expedition use the same transmission, and Ford has admitted to a design flaw that causes the shifting issues. We would like to request that Ford be held responsible for the safety issue that affects all vehicles with their 10 speed transmission, not merely just the F150 because it is their most popular model.

Transmission (10R80) had dark and foul smelling fluid and shifted erratically, harsh, clunky and delayed @ ~75K miles, perhaps even much sooner. Ford repeatedly stated that the performance was as expected and normal behavior making no effort to further diagnose or support. Next, the transmission fluid was sampled during a flush by a Ford dealer and sent to a lab for analysis. Report came back that there was high metal content in the fluid. New fluid quickly became dark and foul smelling again with similar performance as above. Next I had Ford dealer reset the shift learning and update/check the shift sequence as recommended by a current TSB. Even after some time, the performance was similar as above. Next I had a Ford dealer diagnose further, to which they then said that I needed a new transmission. At this time, the original TSB was added to, where now the CDF drum was noted as a possible failure. At this time, however, the TSB did not mention a need for clutch replacement. Finally, the transmission was completely rebuilt. All of this was paid for by me out of pocket.

The transmission shifts erratically due to similar issues seen 2014 F-150's that have been recalled. We have seen the transmission jump from 10th to 1st gear and have had the transmission lock out randomly. This issue has caused near miss incidents on the highway and interstate several times. The vehicle is currently parked due to this issue as we try to work with Ford to replace the transmission. Safety was put at risk due to erratic shifting of the transmission. We took the car to the dealer and they named the issue as the CDF clutch pack.the component has not yet been inspected directly as the problem is a known problem for Ford. Yes there were warning lamps when the transmission locked out and would not allow the vehicle to move under it's own power till the power was cycled.

Transmissions are failing. They have a faulty CDF drum. In the 10R80 transmissions. Ford knows it. And they aren't recalling it. Transmissions are failing at low mileage. Some are out of warranty for the age. People are having to pay for 2 and 3 Transmissions. Pay for outrageous extended warranties just to be covered. They are jumping gears and completely dying on highways. I belong to an expedition group. And every day someone is almost in an accident. Or are replacing a transmission. I've had problems since I got mine. Hard shifting. Delayed shifting. 3 times in two weeks I tried passing on a highways. I hit the gas to pass. And it made a loud bang and lost all power to transmission. Was like it's in neutral. I had to try getting to the side of the high way through traffic before it stopped moving. Had to put back in park. Shut car off and restart. I had kids in the car both times. Thousands of people are having this problem. I was going up a hill and almost was rear ended. If my kids had been hurt. Ford would have been sued. They know it's a problem. Same transmission in the expedition. F150s. They just keep making money off people fixing them and the Ford warranty. Many people they completely failed on highways. Someone is going to get hurt because they refuse to acknowledge its a safety issue and just do a repair that needs done again in a year or two. This has been going on for years and still no recall. Something needs to be done already.

The transmission seems to slip, shudder and sometimes lag or jerk ahead unexpectedly. At times when waiting to cross traffic, the lagging makes it so I almost stall for a second or two and fear getting hit by oncoming traffic. Each time I have asked the dealership to determine the cause, I am told they have to do a software update and reset the adaptive drive to the factory reset. I have had this serviced three times and the problem continues to reoccur a couple months after the reset and software update. Then I get to take it back and pay for the same service all over again. The incorrect timing of the transmission may now have led to a faulty catalytic converter which is now having to be replaced at only 88k miles.

Vehicle transmission jerky with hard shifts, has missed gears resulting in vehicle in neutral while in traffic at speed. Could be a major hazard at intersections. Issue appears to be common enough for Ford to issue TSB but only repair available is transmission rebuild or replacement. Local dealer service adviser states issue is happening once a week with vehicles in their shop. This is a known issue with the CDF drum within the transmission that is putting people at risk.

My expedition since I bought it completely turns off on me on roads and highways and throws up a wrench symbol and check engine light. Everytime I bring it in to the dealer they keep clearing codes and never fixing anything even tho I have extended warranty. They have had my car for 5-6 months maybe longer but the last time they had it for over a month said everything is fine for our roadtrip. Well the car turned off on me and died in the middle of the Utah Highway... had to be towed. was told it has 70 plus alerts

We bought a 2019 Ford expedition max xlt. On a trip we kept having problems with it jumping out of gear and it felt like the transmission was going to fall out. We looked it up and found several complaints on this same problem with the 2019 models although I can't find any recalls that would have fixed the problem.

Transmission slips at 23 mph

May 3, 2024

Problems with vehicle not staying in neutral problem with vehicle just losing power in the road problems with the shift system error coming on after taking to the dealership to find out there’s issues with the transmission. Apparently this is a pretty common problem.

Apr 25, 2024

In April 2024, the dealer that I purchased my new 2019 Ford Expedition from (in 2019) diagnosed my vehicle with needing the cam phasers replaced, after hearing rattling sounds. After doing some research, I learned that, in November 2021, Ford had issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21N03 -- recognizing that the cam phasers were defective and needed replaced. However, I have come to learn that my VIN number was not included in 21N03 -- for whatever reason. And as such, neither my dealer nor me received notice of 21N03. The dealer is refusing to replace the defective cam phasers. Ford is saying -- it's not covered because my VIN isn't included in 21N03. But nobody can tell me why. It's a 2019 Ford Expedition that SHOULD BE included in the recall. If it isn't, why?

Apr 25, 2024

I've had a problem with these two service bulletins: TSB 24-2101 and TSB 23-2143. They are known issues with Ford. I am three weeks out of warranty, and they won't fix these things. These items should be recalled as they are defects.

Apr 23, 2024

My Ford Expedition has lost power 4 times requiring me to pull off the Interstate and have the car towed. I have been driving 75-80 mph each time this has happened. It is as if the car takes a big deep breath, and then loses all power. It failed most recently on Halloween 2023, and then again in March of 2024. Prior to these two times, the car has lost power 2 other times. It has always been serviced at a Ford dealership. All three times INCLUDING this last time the dash lights on the car have read, "powertrain failure" and "pre-collision brake assist not available". When it failed in March, even though it registered a code both on my dash and in my Ford Pass App, the dealership said they could not reproduce the problem therefore, there was nothing they could fix. I am scared to get behind the wheel of this car. I also do not want to sell it to anyone else for fear they will have the same problem. Cars don't just lose power while driving 75 mph. It is dangerous and a definite safety concern. It is not like I am driving a pinto. This was a brand new car, is fully paid for, has clean maintenance records, and is an expensive vehicle. It has been well taken care of and should not have power failure four times at only 4 years old. It is terrifying to be driving at high speed and lose power. I have been very lucky to not have caused a secondary accident on the freeway, or been in an accident myself when this has happened.

The contact stated that it felt as if the transmission was slipping; however, the vehicle was accelerating normally. The contact stated that while in reverse, the vehicle would slam into gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure while in reverse was duplicated and the valve body was replaced. The failure recurred and the contact stated that the vehicle would also aggressively accelerate forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a transmission failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was unknown.

When I cold start my 2019 Ford Expedition Limited it has a ticking noise under the hood coming from the engine. Remote start or in the cab button start noise happens. Would like this fixed asap as the manufacturer Ford is aware of the problem. I’ve own a 2004 Ford explorer xlt never had any problems except wear and tear. Silverado was my 1st truck no problems. I love ford trucks, I’m embarrassed by this. Please honor your slogan “Built Ford Tough” Thank you

While driving on the highway at moderate speeds during rush hour there was noticeable hesitation/delay with acceleration (automatic transmission). It made a noticeable clunk and it completely lost power momentarily. I called the Ford dealership and was told there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) on this exact issue but it's not covered under a recall. I received further correspondence stating that because it's not a recall it has to go through Ford's warranty department and it may not be covered. My vehicle has been at the dealership since March 8th. This is very dangerous and is a significant safety risk to have harsh and delayed shifting, clunking and power loss. I hope a safety recall can be recommend to prevent serious injury.

Mar 13, 2024

Frequent Hard shifting, especially going from 3-4 and 6-7. Frequent Clunking and hard shift while driving around town. While traveling in the interstate at approximately 55-60mph, Multiple times I have encountered accelerating on the freeway and momentarily losing power, feels like it shifted to neutral as I could not accelerate despite hitting the gas. After a few seconds the transmission shifts back and I can accelerate, but it was as if the transmission didn't know what gear to be in and it continues to shift hard before eventually going back to normal.

Feb 4, 2024

Transmission overheated while going 70-75 mph on the interstate without warning. I Pulled over and saw the thermostat to be overheated to 277 degrees (proof with picture). I along with my husband and 3 young kids Had to be towed 60 + miles back to my house. I was informed by 2 different mechanics the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle had 89k miles on it. I attempted have it checked by a Ford dealership (there are 4 nearby) and all had at least a 12 week waitlist to be diagnosed. During the diagnostic period my vehicle would have to remain on the lot. No dealership would provide a loaner vehicle during that time. Due to financial and work responsibilities, I was unable to do that . We went with a different mechanic to replace with a new transmission (proof with documentation). I am also on the waiting list (10 weeks) to have the cam phasers be diagnosed, this time by the ford dealership. My mechanic I used for the transmission already reported they needed to be changed but I am waiting to see what Ford says . There has been no warning of this happening

Feb 1, 2024

The vehicle has harsh shifting, it will skip gears, while driving you will at times hear a grinding noise and the gear drops to 1st and the RPM revs up very high. My safety was put at risk multiple times while driving when the car randomly decides to drop down to first gear. Ford has admitted the problems with the transmissions but will not do anything for the consumer to make it right. My vehicle has been in a ford dealership where they “reset the values” and that has done nothing for it.

Jan 29, 2024

Powertrain malfunction per engine light on dash and ford app description. Car lost gas power and immediately came to a halt. When trying to get car going it would not shift into gear. Got it to the ford parts store and they said it needs a complete new transmission. There were no warnings prior to the transmission going out.

Jan 23, 2024

When entering the vehicle and closing all doors, one pushes the start button. Once starting to drive or reverse, an error message appears "Transmission Not in Park". The error message stays until the vehicle is put into motion. Then when coming to a stop, the error message reappears. It is understood the transmission is not in park because one is attempting to drive the vehicle. The vehicle drives fine, but the message appears repeatedly while in reverse and or drive. Many forums have suggested the rotary dial to engage the different drive modes is not speaking with the door latches. No other warnings appear and no doors are ajar.

Jan 22, 2024

AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS THE TRANSMISSION WILL LOSE ALL POWER LIKE IT'S IN NEUTRAL. THE VEHICLE WILL HAVE NO POWER WHEN THIS HAPPENS. FORD HAS HAD A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL.

On December 19, 2023 my 2019 Ford Expedition the Cam Phasers failed on the EcoBoost V6 Engine requiring a $3,500 repair. A local Ford dealership has confirmed this issue and are proceeding with the repairs. This is a very common issue with the EcoBoost V6 Engine and Ford needs to address this issue.

On multiple occasions I have experienced a sudden loss of power. This seems to happen when excelerating while entering/merging on to the freeway. There is a large bang/clunk and then no power. This has caused nearly caused me to be in accidents, especially when trying to merge into speeding traffic. I'm afraid this is going to cause an accident.

Expedition shifts terribly. Gets stuck in 4th gear and jerks very badly. Car has shut off multiple times while driving. Expedition will get stuck in the middle of traffic lights due to it not being able to shift up gears. Gets stuck in 4th gear every time it stops so then have to put car in park and turn off for it to be able to drive. The 10 speed transmission needs a recall asap before there is a death if there isn’t some already.

In June of 2022 (50,284 miles) we were experiencing hard shifting and noises upon starting. We took it to our local dealership in Virginia who did an upgrade on the powertrain control module and told me what I was experiencing was normal for this transmission and not a concern. In December of 2022 (57,715 miles), my husband was driving our expedition when it suddenly downshifted, would not accelerate, and a warning popped up saying “drive mode unavailable”, in addition to a wrench and engine light displaying on the dashboard. We immediately had it towed to our local dealership where they diagnosed the problem as needing a MAP sensor replacement even though there was no codes showing. In March of 2023 (at 63,20 miles) while traveling with my 2 young children down the highway at 75 mph in a desolate area, my car made a noise, downshifted very hard, and lost ability to accelerate. The same warning popped up stating “drive mode unavailable”. I had to maneuver my vehicle to the shoulder in traffic traveling at a high rate of speed with my children in the car. I again had it towed to a ford dealership where they stated it was due to the previous dealership only replacing one MAP sensor so they replaced both. On October 28, 2023 (at approximately 72,000 miles) while traveling at 75 mph on a highway in a desolate area, my car again downshifted, lost the ability to accelerate, and had the same pop up stating “drive mode unavailable” with the same warning lights as the previous 2 times. I had to navigate across multiple lanes to the shoulder in low visibility pouring rain with vehicles driving at a high rate of speed. My car has been at a dealership for 2 weeks now and they have diagnosed the issue is my cam phasers and the repair is for them to be replaced. I opened a case with Ford customer experience who agreed to pay 40% of the cost. I have been put in dangerous situations due to Ford’s refusal to put out a recall when it is a known issue.

Oct 19, 2023

The 10R80 transmission started delayed shifts between 8,9,10. After 50 miles the issue spread to the lower gears. When going from 3rd to 4th or 5th the engine speeds up vehicle loses speed. To recover let your foot off the gas and then apply gas very gently. After another 50 miles shifting became more erratic, sometimes with a load clunk. My safety has been at risk because you cannot count on the vehicle to do a smooth acceleration during a traffic merge. If you are in a lineup doing a merge suddenly you cannot keep pace because the transmission is shifting erratically. The vehicle has been at the dealer from October 3rd within in line for repair. They have stated Ford is just overwhelmed with 10R80 repairs. Based upon public information the Ford 10R80 transmission has some major flaws. Received an orange wrench message telling me repairs are required. I know that by its behavior. Filed a case with Ford Customer Care program, so far no help.

2019 Ford Expedition engine rattles on cold start, while driving at highway speeds, loss of engine power, and when Auto start/stop engages, it will, at times, "catch" and turn vehicle off due to lack of engine power- it will then flash a warning message stating driver must shift to park, then restart vehicle. Cam Phaser/Cam shaft wears prematurely, thus, not allowing it to open and close valves related to the crankshaft and pistons, which in turn poses a risk to both the vehicle operator as well as drivers on the road. Safety is a put at risk due to the cam phaser adjusting the camshaft so the car responds to low RPM- This causes reduced engine power and potential stalling- which is a major concern when driving any vehicle, especially on freeways with small children in the car. This problem has been confirmed by a dealing, specifically a dealer services manager, who stated "its a very known issue and somehow hasn't been recalled yet". The vehicle has been inspected a ford service manager The first known symptom is the rattle sound upon cold start, then other symptoms arose such as the lack of engine power, stalling, and auto start/stop not working correctly. The only "warning" is that of the auto start/stop malfunction that offers upon stalling (at a stop speed), this does not include stalling when at highway speeds.

April 2023 was the first time we experienced an issue. We were out of town driving on the highway, accelerating to an on-ramp when we heard a loud thud underneath the car and then lost acceleration. My husband removed his foot off the gas and then when he put pressure on the gas pedal again it began driving. During this incident we saw warning lights on the dash (a wrench and we believe a few other lights as well) and a chime noise. Since April 2023 we have had 3 to 4 other instances where the car has shifted hard, not like the usual shifting. On August 29 2023, my car was at 77,405 miles we experienced the same hard shifting incident. This time we were accelerating to change lanes on the highway when we heard a loud thud underneath the car, this time it was so loud it was like a sledgehammer underneath us, we could even feel it underneath our feet. We lost all acceleration and could not get it back. Because we lost all acceleration, my husband had to get over multiple lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder and figure out what to do next. This experience was very frightening because with no acceleration it put us at a huge risk in the middle of a very congested highway with our kids. Again, we had warning lights on the dash (a wrench) and a chime noise but it went away before we could get a picture or look at it long enough to remember if any additional lights popped up, we were too worried about pulling over to safety. After being pulled over for a few minutes, turning the car off and back on again, we were able to accelerate. We tried to take the car in to be fixed under warranty but they were not able to replicate the issue. We believe this issue it due to the power train (transmission) and it is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others.

Car has 49700 miles. I was traveling on highway at speed and tried to accelerate to merge into exit lane traffic and engine and power train completely cut out and transmission failure light with wrench came on. Luckily cars behind me were able to slow down and avoid an accident but this could have been deadly. Thank God my children were not in the car. Car was previously taken to dealership in January of 2023 for transmission shifting issues and repair work was done. Car is also “hard shifting” into gear from park, causing whole car to jerk. Car routinely “hard shifts” when accelerating onto highway and “hard shifts” when slowing in rush hour traffic.

Transmission problems - slipping, shifting delays, clunking sounds, losing power, hard shifting. Cam phasers - rattling on cold start Car is available for inspection Shifting delay was confirmed by dealership service department. 4 VCT units and gaskets have been replaced once already to fix cam phasers rattle in 2/21, but issue is happening again. Cam phasers gone bad even after doing a ‘reprogram’ that Ford listed as a recall. Ford then sent out a Customer Satisfaction Extension to replace the cam phasers (that we never received) but we missed the expiration date so now they are refusing to cover any of the service or parts. This is a known issue for the 3.5 engine, yet consumers are paying thousands out of pocket for a known issue.

Happens 80% of the time when I'm slowing down coming around a curve on a slight inclin, 5gear sounds like it's grinding in then it dowm shifts to 4th and slows down very fast..then downs hard shift with clunk upto 5th when speeding up after that slight turn . Seem to get worse after 95,500 miles

The transmission on this vehicle slips in and out of gear . It is very dangerous trying to merge into traffic. It make a high pitch sound and smells a burning smell. I have not taken it to the shop yet but will have to in the near future.

Aug 15, 2023

Hard shifts by the transmission, an extreme lack of shifts by the transmission resulting in stalling out on highway as if it was in neutral, jumping multiple gears at one time, trying to shift once it reached the final gear, Ford took 6 months to rebuild my transmission and when I got it back the sunroof was broken and leaking in my passenger floorboard, a month later I’m still have loud whining noises from start and leaking coolant, it is now back in the shop, while being covered under a certified pre owned warranty, we bought it from a dealership a little over 2 years ago and it has been in the shop for these repairs and others a total of 10 months.

Aug 13, 2023

When crossing an intersection my vehicles RPMs went up but there was no acceleration, after a few seconds the car found the gear and went across. There hasn't been any lights on for any issues. Trying to find somewhere to take it because the transmission is done. had we been hit with my kids in the vehicle ford would have a bigger issue at hand.

Aug 12, 2023

On at least six occasions in the last few months, the transmission has disengaged while attempting to accelerate. This has happened most frequently when attempting to merge into traffic on the freeway. The transmission disengages, the engine revs, and no power is transmitted to the tires. The car coasts in neutral until the transmission re-engages. The loss of power and duration for which the transmission is not working poses a major safety problem--right when you need to accelerate to merge safely into traffic, all power is lost. In some cases, the transmission will re-engage while the engine RPMs are still elevated and the gear will make a loud noise and the vehicle will jerk. I've taken the vehicle to a Ford dealer for service under warranty and the dealer provided no information other than a general "something's certainly wrong and we need to open it up and start rebuilding things" response. They say they're over 3 months out before they have time to start repairs. I have been unable to actually schedule these repairs with the dealer after multiple contacts. I'm worried that Ford has no resolution to this issue and hopes to make it through to the end of the warranty period without providing any resolution. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Transmission; yes. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Yes. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Unknown. The dealer's service center confirms something is wrong, but could not provide specifics. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? A Ford dealer's service center. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The digital display on the dash has, in some instances, flashed "see owners manual" when power has been lost.

Aug 9, 2023

Transmission has been clunky since new purchase in 2019. Has been to dealer several times for diagnosis. No resolution. Usually cannot reproduce when dealer has car. Recently dealer did some work on the transmission and then it failed on a long highway trip. Transmission overheated. Went into limp mode. Now stuck at a dealer 300 miles away. Dealer can’t reproduce the problem when they drive it around the block and somehow there are no obd codes so they won’t do any work on it, but also ford won’t pay to have it transported to our home dealer.

Jul 17, 2023

Transmission randomly shifts out of gear while trying to accelerate creating an unsafe driving condition. This usually happens at Highway speeds.

Jul 11, 2023

I own a 2019 Ford Expedition Max (10R80 trans) & have experienced intermit. issues with the vehicle failing to shift into a higher gear when accelerating rapidly & getting stuck in a high RPM unless the accelerator is released. When releasing the accelerator there is a violent clunk & jerking. I have expressed this issue to Ford’s Service Department at the dealership. When intaking my vehicle the service advisor made a comment to another advisor that we have another Expedition with shifting issues. The advisor stated that this seemed to be a common issue with these vehicles, so I researched the issue online myself & found several threads with the same reported issue to include class action lawsuit websites for this issue. I paid Ford’s Service Department to diagnose the vehicle and they found no issues with the transmission and said it was okay and they weren’t able to replicate the issue (this is because it is an intermit. issue). The advisor stated that the transmission has an adaptive learn system and stated that the adaptive learn could be having issues, so I asked them to keep the vehicle and flash the adaptive learn or do a reset. I had them flash the system and it seemed to resolve the issue for a while, but it later returned. I then attempted contacting Ford Customer Service (Corporate) directly and explained the issue to them however they directed right back to the dealership. Recently I went to West Virginia for vacation and was traveling on the interstate. While traveling on the interstate at about 55 mph I was in a situation where I needed to rapidly accelerate due to an 18-wheeler changing lanes into my lane. The vehicle failed to accelerate/shift into a higher gear and being stuck in high RPMs. We were nearly KILLED in this incident and this is what prompted me to contact the NHTSA. I am also a law enforcement officer of over 15 years. It is my professional and personal opinion that this issue is an EXTREME DANGER to the occupants of these vehicles.

I own a 2019 Expedition XLT. I was traveling on the highway; I was in the right lane and was stuck behind a slow moving vehicle. I put on my blinker and waited for an opening in traffic, to move into the middle lane. Once there was an opening, I pressed the gas to accelerate into the lane. While the truck should have properly shifted and accelerated; instead the powertrain completely disengaged and I lost all power. The RPM's jumped all the way up. The truck was revving so high, but it was actually slowing down. I took my foot of the gas pedal and as the RPM came back down, the transmission slammed back into place with a horrible loud clunking sound that jolted the entire vehicle. After that, I was finally able to accelerate. This same situation has happened to me on several separate occasions. It is very scary having my 3 children in the vehicle and it losing power as I'm trying to make a move to be safe.

This vehicle has been to the dealer multiple times to check hard-shifting and shuttering. Could not replicate at dealer. On 5/27/23 500 miles into a 2k mile road trip the vehicle hard shifted- felt like we hit something, then lost all acceleration. Would not accelerate. Narrowly missing being hit by several cars as I moved it from the fast lane into shoulder. Trying to accelerate the whole time. It finally reengaged with another jolt. This vehicle has 76,000 miles on it at the time. It went into a dealer on 5/30. They confirmed the transmission was slipping into neutral on its own. They have had it ever since and now say it will be 2-3 weeks before repaired. Meanwhile - I was stuck 500 miles away from home.

In December 2022, my Expedition had a problem shifting while climbing hills. The transmission fluid was also overheating. We took it into the shop, but they didn’t find any issues. Over the past month, the transmission has been significantly hesitating and clunky. The local dealership have no transmission appointments until July 2023.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving into the driveway and shifting into park, the shift indicator message stated that the vehicle was not in park; however, the contact was still able to turn off the vehicle. On another occasion, while driving 15 MPH and entering the highway, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The warning light disappeared, and the vehicle operated as intended. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The manufacturer did not provide any further assistance. The failure mileage was 92,000.

The transmission shifting is dangerous. It’s shifting hard, missing gears and when trying to accelerate the engine just rev’s and then slams into gear. It also skips. It’s not even safe to pull out into traffic. I have had it in at a Ford dealership 3 times and it has only gotten worse! I don’t know what else to do as the dealership acts like they have not seen this before and aren’t sure how to fix it.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer, where it was diagnosed that the solenoid valve was defective. The contact stated that the vehicle was returned to her a week later; however, the failure reoccurred while driving the vehicle to her residence. The dealer was notified, and a second appointment was scheduled. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000.

Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive The vehicle has exhibited issues that correspond to other Ford vehicles that share the 10-speed transmission. This includes slipping, jerking, and loss of power to put it simply. A main issue that I wanted to point out is that it has a Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive which means that the vehicle shifts into neutral when driving, thus resulting in a loss of power, suddenly. Consequently, this posses a major safety risk in all roads. There has been no accident that resulted from this. However, this requires a replacement of transmission which is a recall for the F150 but not the Expedition despite it having the same transmission and issues. This issue began around Christmas of 2022.

"SHIFT SYSTEM FAULT" warning comes on dash with a wrench code. This is on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, with 77000 miles on it. This warning comes when vehicle has been driven and since put in park, then put back into gear. If vehicle is shut off and turned back on code has cleared. Recently also got a "powertrain malfunction" code where then a driver mode became unavailable.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact stated that it was as if the vehicle was stuck in second or third gear. The contact stated that when the transmission attempted to shift to the next gear, the engine revved loudly, and the vehicle jolted into gear. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent at first but had gradually become constant. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the dealer had rebuilt the transmission previously. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.

I had a complete transmission replacement 3 weeks ago and as I was driving down a grade, the car started smoking. I immediately took it back to dealership that had just replaced the transmission. They stated that the new transmission was "factory overfilled" that caused the smoking. They called Ford and now I am on my 3rd transmission. It was covered under the warranty of the transmission I paid 3 weeks ago. This was very scary as we were traveling as a family when the car started smoking. Our car could have started on fire.

The transmission in my 2019 Ford Expedition is slipping and having drastic gear changes. Other people with the 10R80 transmission are having similar issues. This car is unsafe to drive.

Feb 23, 2023

Hard shifting, getting stuck in high gears while stopped. Vehicle is only at 75,000 miles. Ford service says transmission needs to be replaced and it's extremely expensive.

Feb 18, 2023

Transmission shifts really hard , will not go into gear, and downshifts unexpectedly. Dealership said if they cannot make it happen on test drive nothing they can do. Ongoing problem with thousands of vehicles. 10 speed Transmission is the problem.

Feb 6, 2023

Our 2019 Ford Expedition MAX (75k miles), has a transmission that disengages while driving (wrench light on; powertrain system failure limp mode; incorrect 4th gear ratio error code). A mechanic diagnosed it as an inner sleeve of the C-D-F drum moving out of position needing a full rebuild or new transmission. The vehicle has lost total drive train power while driving in traffic at speed. Whenever there is a need for up shift or down shift, the vehicle will intermittently stutter, slip/grind gears, rev up, or lose power completely. This has put my family in danger on the road. The car is dangerous when attempting to pull onto roads with moving traffic. It is concerning that Ford has not issued a recall.

Feb 4, 2023

My 2019 Ford Expedition Max- Limited: Shifting was starting to get rough and car was jerking between gears. It was unsafe as it would not speed up in the highway and it would jerk all of a sudden. Transmission failed at 88K miles. I had to pay over 8K at the Ford Dealership to get a whole new transmission placed after various attempts to deal with issue failed. Ford Company could care less about their faulty transmissions. No warning lights ever came on other than the harsh shifting that suddenly started within a week's time.

Jan 31, 2023

The transmission randomly switches gears, both down and up. At times, the car will just downshift and appears to lose power. Especially when attempting to pass other vehicles. This can be a dangerous situation, and has been. It also has caused a near accident on a snow covered road by 'taking off' in a high gear which caused the card to slide into the oncoming lane twice. I have taken this car to the dealership service department 4 times, they say there are no codes or recalls and just reset the computer to have it relearn my driving habits.

Jan 21, 2023

Vehicle has harsh shifting mainly gear 3-5 almost like being brake checked. The vehicle revs to 4000 rpm and won’t accelerate then slaws into gear causing the car to lurch forward and illuminate wrench symbol. Latest issue is car accelerates on it’s on and almost drove it on a drainage ditch pulling in my driveway.

Jan 17, 2023

Our 2019 Ford Expedition MAX (50k miles on it), has a transmission that disengages while driving. The vehicle has lost total drive train power while driving in traffic at speed. Whenever there is a need for up shift or down shift, the vehicle will intermittently stutter, slip gears, or lose power completely. This has put my family (pregnant wife and two children under 4) in extreme danger on the road. In one incident her only available course of action was to attempt to coast off the road while in the midst of moving traffic with speeds in excess of 50+ miles per hour around her. The car is dangerous, attempting to pull onto roads with moving traffic, is now extremely worrying. It is unconscionable that this vehicle issue has not resulted in a recall.

Jan 11, 2023

The vehicle has problem when shifting gears, and complete loss of power occurs. When trying to enter a road or cross a street, the vehicle can start to move then lose power in the middle of an intersection or lane. A loud clicking can also be heard after power is lost.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a vibration in the front differential. The contact stated that the vehicle felt like it was being driven in 4-WD however, the vehicle was in 2-WD. There were no warning lights illuminated. On another occasion, while driving approximately 30-35 MPH, there was a vibration and shimmy in the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer in July 2021 where it was diagnosed and determined that the failure was due to the front differential. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.

The Ford series of Trucks/SUVs from 2018-2022 are equipped with an Automatic Start/Stop feature which turns off the engine when the brake is depressed, and the engine is idling. On 4 occasions in the last month, when releasing the brake to start accelerating from a stop, the vehicle's engine has completely stalled/turned off disabling the vehicle and requiring the vehicle to be shifted in to park, restarted, and then attempted to drive. This causes an obvious safety risk if turning in front of traffic, vehicles behind you moving, etc.. When researching this online there are multiple complaints on this issue, specifically for the F-150 which uses the same components. Ford will not admit there is an issue and refuses to respond to owner complaints on this obvious safety risk. I would ask that the NHTSA looks further into this issue and the risk to consumers.

Transmission failure 4 occurrences after dealer repair under warranty. The transmission issues are very well documented and dealer has returned vehicle to parent with kids in vehicle..within 20 miles vehicle stooped on I-40 traffic endangering lives 3rd failure. Returned vehicle to dealer and when told vehicle was ready it made 15 miles prior to overheating and ceasing to accelerate out of traffic endangering lives. These are the last 2 times vehicle was returned. 2 prior when we were told the vehicle was ok and loss of acceleration, grinding, jerking were normal. Vehicle currently at dealer. Communication with Ford with little assistance. Prior to these failures were cam phasers with 4 similar failures and almost burned my garage down. This vehicle and many others are not safe and should be addressed.

Nov 4, 2022

The vehicle started to rough shift. Then it started to not shift into gear, and the engine will rev as if in neutral instead of in gear. This has resulted in abrupt loss of power and the vehicle actually shutting down completely requiring restart. I called my Ford dealer (Columbia, TN) when it started shifting rough. They told me it was 2mos out for transmission issues. I called another Ford dealer in Franklin, TN whom also said months before they could see it. They referred me to a local transmission shop. That shop Coleman transmission, said these transmission in 2018&2019 are notorious for failing and were redesigned by 2020, that he had many just like mine awaiting rebuild. So I started researching, and I’m not alone, and many have had this exact same extremely dangerous situation of losing power, and car shutting down repeatedly.

Sep 12, 2022

In April 2021 while driving, the car abruptly when into low power mode. I drove it straight to ford. They pulled the codes and said there was nothing wrong. Ever since then, the car will randomly make a grinding sound, lose power, a wrench flashes and then it goes back to normal. It has done with several times on the freeway upon acceleration. The dealerships cannot replicate.

Sep 2, 2022

On multiple occasions while driving at freeway speeds, there have been sudden episodes of power loss and rapid loss of speed associated with harsh transmission downshifts. These events sometimes occurred on slight uphill grades and also on flat highway. At other times, the transmission will fail to shift into higher gear and seem to slip, resulting in loss of speed. A warning indicator appeared on the last occasion (8/27/22) with a wrench icon, and the FordPass app told me to have vehicle serviced. Vehicle is at dealer now.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, the engine emitted abnormal loud rattling sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle would not shift from first gear to the other gears automatically. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed the contact that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) needed to be reprogrammed; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The contact referenced Ford Customer Satisfaction Program Numbers: 21B10 21N03 and 21N08. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

The 2019 Expedition 10 Speed Transmission went into neutral during acceleration from third gear, skipped 4th and finally reengaged in 5th with a huge jolt. This happened a second time after leaving the next stop sign. During the neutral period ( approx. 3 or 4 seconds) engine RPM's increased dramatically with loss of forward motion and speed. My reaction was to remove my foot from the gas pedal before the engine red-lined. This issue could have caused vehicles behind to rear end our 2019 Ford Expedition. The transmission was at full temperature as the expedition had been driven for approx. 30 minutes prior to the issues. We then parked the expedition for about an hour and then started the drive home and the neutral issue occurred once again. The transmission hard shifting issues were first noticed in March/April 2022 had been reprogramed in June, 2022 which didn't resolve the problem. It was then serviced late July 2022 by rebuilding a control module(?). We were told to drive the vehicle for a couple of weeks while the transmission learned how we drive and everything would return to normal. Currently have returned the Expedition to the dealer as this is a serious safety issue. Hard shifting or even jumping a gear with a jolt isn't going be a danger, but losing power and control of the Expedition could have caused an accident and possible injury to us and others.

Jul 25, 2022

The first incident I was travelling on the highway at approx 60-70 mph and attempting to overtake a slower car by switching lanes. As I changed lanes and hit the gas, my Expedition became stuck between gears and lost power until I let off the accelerator and the rpm's came down. This happened on several occasions with similar circumstances. The other times it's been stuck between gears are typically when I am turning left. The loss of power and basically being in neutral while on the highway or turning left is a specific safety hazard that needs prompt attention. I am dropping it off at the dealership tomorrow and I'm sure they will be "unable to recreate the problem" and I'll have to wait until the recall for it to be fixed.

The ecoboost 3.5 engine has a common issue with the cam phasers. My vehicle has had oil changes done, every 9,000 miles and now needs the cam phasers to be replaces. It has 83,000 miles. I believe this is a known defect that Ford is trying to remedy with customer satisfaction campaigns, rather than a recall. Had the 21b10 tsb performed and which is a requirement and the car shudders and the transmission shifts poorly. Also, the driver's side seat best will not retract fully.

Jan 25, 2022

My vehicle started jumping gears. It felt like I was manually changed gear.

•Vechicle is a lemon car by definition and needs to be replaced due to safety issues and the amount of calls in the short duration I have had it in my position •My family and I have been leveraging other family vechicle along side putting the car dormant as much as we can to avoid further mechanical issues which is not acceptable •The request to ask for 4 to 6 weeks on a car repair without loaner is unacceptable as the loan payments are still due by me to the lender and are unable to utilize the car in any capacity •The issue has been open for about 10 months since reporting with NO resolution - unacceptable •Dealership purposely delayed and provided incorrect information and allowed the warranty period to expire as it would provide revenue of service to the business (recalls are free) Please see the attachment for a detailed timeline and supporting documents

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated a rattling sound was heard coming from the engine compartment after starting the vehicle. The contact stated no warning lights were illuminated. The independent mechanic was called and stated that the failure was related to the cam phaser, which needed replacement. The independent mechanic stated that the part was on backorder. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed of a recall which the vehicle was included in regarding the cam phaser. The contact stated she received notice of the customer satisfaction program for the cam phaser however, the part was on backorder. The contact was advised of a PCM upgrade to correct the issue however, the failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and was advised to contact NHTSA for assistance. The customer service representative at Ford looked up the VIN and told the contact to call NHTSA as there was nothing they could do. The failure mileage was 67,000. Local Ford dealer informed consumer this was a recall and they could fix it. Two week later, consumer got the recall in the mail. But by this time, consumer was well over the 70,000 mile marker, so it was going to cost her a prorated price to get it fixed. I was almost at the 80,000 mile marker by the time it was fixed.

EVENT OCCURS WHEN VEHICLE IS WARMED UP - TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMP > 205 AND MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR GOING UPHILL OR ON A SLIGHT INCLINE ON HIGHWAY WITH A SPEED ABOVE 55 MPH. WHEN ACCELERATING QUICKLY OR AGGRESSIVELY, THE 10 SPEED TRANSMISSION FAILS. I PUSH DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL WHILE IN THE 10 GEAR. IT SEEMS LIKE IT IS STUCK IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE REV'S TO THE RED LINE IF I LEAVE MY FOOT ON THE PEDAL, THE VEHICLE LOOSES SPEED AND EVENTUALLY FINDS A GEAR BETWEEN 2 AND 6 AND TRANSMISSION RE-ENGAGES. THE VEHICLE WILL REV TO THE RED LINE BEFORE FINDING A GEAR. THIS HAS CREATED MULTIPLE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS IN WHICH A VEHICULAR ACCIDENT ALMOST OCCURRED DUE TO THE IMMEDIATE LOSS OF SPEED IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SITUATIONS. THE VEHICLE WENT FROM 83 MPH TO 55 IN SECONDS BEFORE THE TRANSMISSION RE-ENGAGES. I HAVE TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY CAN NOT RECREATE THE ISSUE IN ORDER TO FIX DESPITE SUBMITTING NUMEROUS VIDEOS OF THE SEPARATE TIMES IN WHICH THE EVENT OCCURS. FORD IS AWARE OF A DESIGN DEFECT THAT CAUSES THE VCT SYSTEM TO WEAR OUT WITHIN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME IN BRAND NEW EXPEDITIONS. WHEN THE VCT SYSTEM WEARS OUT, THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY TRANSITIONS INTO "LIMP MODE" , WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO IMMEDIATELY (UNSAFELY) DECELERATE TO A SPEED OF 15MPH (OR LESS ON HILLS), CREATING DANGEROUS SITUATIONS, PARTICULARLY ON HIGHWAYS AND WHEN TOWING. WE PURCHASED OUR EXPEDITION IN MARCH 2019, BRAND NEW. WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WITH THE HEAVY DUTY TOW PACKAGE, WHICH PROVIDES TOWING UP TO 9,300LBS. WITHIN A FEW MONTHS, THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING A LOUD RATTLE AT START UP, LASTING A FEW SECONDS. WE DILIGENTLY SERVICED THE VEHICLE ONLY AT FORD DEALERSHIPS, WHO ROUTINELY SAID THE RATTLE WAS "FINE" OR "WITHIN SPEC." ON 9/1/2020, WHILE TOWING OUR AIRSTREAM TRAILER (~7,000 LBS) ON INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 86 THROUGH WINDSOR, NY, THE VEHICLE THREW ON THE "WRENCH LIGHT" AND RAPIDLY DECELERATED FROM 55MPH TO 10MPH. WE WERE AT THE BOTTOM OF A LONG INCLINE, IN MODERATELY HEAVY TRAFFIC (65MPH). THERE WAS AN INSUFFICIENT SHOULDER TO STOP WITH OUR TRAILER, SO WE VERY SLOWLY CREPT FOR MILES TO THE NEAREST EXIT. THE CLOSEST FORD DEALERSHIPS REFUSED TO LOOK AT IT. IT WAS EVENTUALLY TOWED TO ONEONTA FORD. DESPITE KNOWING OF TSB 20-2315 (AND ITS PREDECESSORS), FORD CLAIMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS "FINE" AND LIKELY JUST SUFFERED A BAD OIL CHANGE. AFTER SPENDING 12 DAYS WITH OUR VEHICLE, THEY RETURNED IT, PERFORMING ONLY AN OIL CHANGE. THE RATTLE REMAINED AND FORD CLAIMED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. ON 10/9/2020, THE VERY NEXT TIME WE ATTEMPTED TO TOW, ON COUNTY HIGHWAY 2, THE VEHICLE AGAIN, ABRUPTLY WENT FROM 55 TO10MPH ON A LONG, SLOW INCLINE IN MODERATE TRAFFIC. WE TURNED AROUND (WITH THE TRAILER) ON A 2 LANE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO FORD, WHO RELUCTANTLY (AFTER WEEKS) REPLACED THE VCT SYSTEM PER TSB 20-2315.

AT MY STOPPING, AUTO ENGINE SHUT OFF TURNED OFF ENGINE AS WAS TRYING TO SHIFT TO REVERSE. BY TIME ENGINE TURNED BACK ON, ACKNOWLEDGED REVERSE, ENGAGED REVERSE, RESPONDED TO ACCELERATOR BEING PUSHED, GEAR ENGAGED, THE TRUCK WAS ABOUT TO HIT ME AS DRIVER DID NOT SEE ME. LUCKILY DRIVER NOTICED AND SLAMMED ON BRAKES. BY THIS TIME, VEHICLE WAS STILL TRYING TO MOVE SO IF TRUCK DID NOT STOP, I WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT. AUTO STOP OF ENGINE IS A DANGEROUS FEATURE. WHILE MAY WORK AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, IN A SITUATION REQUIRING QUICK RESPONSE, TOO MANY STEPS TO TURN VEHICLE ON AND ENGAGE A CHANGE OF DIRECTION. FORD HAS A FEATURE TO TURN OFF MANUALLY, BUT SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TURN OFF ALL THE TIME. IF VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN IN EMERGENCY SITUATION AS THIS, A PERSON COULD BE KILLED. THIS EVENT WAS VIEWED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE AND ALL I COULD SAY WAS COULD NOT MOVE AS VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND QUICKLY ENOUGH.
