Transmission will randomly jump while accelerating and downshift to the point that we have to get to the interstate shoulder. This has happened many times.

Jan 8, 2026

We bought this truck new. When accelerating in “normal” transmission, mode, it would downshift and the turbos would kick in at the same time giving an unwanted surge of power. I found that driving in “sports” mode would give me more normal acceleration. Another issue I had as it got older was getting a big clank from the transmission when putting it in gear, especially in the morning when cold. I described it as hitting an anvil with a hammer. I took it to our local Ford dealer in Carthage, Missouri in early January 2025. The Service Rep said this was normal and I should let the truck warm up before shifting into gear. I told him I parked in the garage and that was not possible. He did not schedule an appointment to check it. About two weeks later on February 5, 2025 with 57,796 miles I returned to the dealer and insisted they check it before the warranty expired. They found nothing wrong. On the weekend from [XXX], I drove approximately 700 miles. During this weekend when accelerating to pass cars at highway speeds the truck would lose complete power like the transmission had shifted into neutral. This happened at least three times. I took the truck back to the Ford dealership on August 7, 2025 with mileage of 66,683. They said the transmission needed replaced. My cost was $9914.95. 2020 Ford Expedition with 38,094 miles started having delayed and rough shifting a few days after my warranty was out on December 12th. 2024. I had looked up the issue before I took it in and found all these complaints and was worried mine was having this same issue. Took to our ford dealer and it was confirmed that my 10R80 transmission had failed and my CDF drum is worn and quoted 5600 to fix! They refuse to cover the cost knowing I and 1000's of others have had this same issue. FORD refuses to acknowledge it and the consumer is left with bill. I have owned 2 ford Explorers and 2 Expeditions in my driving life and feel like they have screwed me over. This needs to be resolved. They need to be held accountable! I am at a loss here and cant afford this fix so does a practically new ( by mileage terms ) car just sit in the yard and rot now??

I am suggesting an investigation into the 2020 model Ford expedition relating to the 10 speed automatic transmission in this vehicle and others in previous and newer models. The problem is known and has been well documented that the transmission often fails and pops out of gear especially when accelerating and is extremely dangerous for obvious reasons while passing or climbing hills. There is not a recall for repair or replacement of these transmissions. The recommended service for this transmission occurs at 150000 miles according to the owners manual however failure often begins well before the first recommended service interval. The cost to repair or replace the equipment often exceeds $10000 and service managers are well aware of the issue.

Dec 23, 2025

My transmission started jumping gears and slipping at 65k miles. I had it checked out then and the mechanic said that these transmissions shifted rough, but they were not really sure why and that they reprogrammed the computer and that should fix it. It went on intermittently for the next 6 months to a year and I took it in again and was told they couldn't get the transmission to shift rough or skip so I would have to come back once it got worse. The longer I drove it, the worse it got until I would regularly lose all power to the wheels even at high speeds as the transmission failed to find a gear to engage. I finally took it back to the dealer again and this time they found that the front differential had failed and was full of metal shavings, the transmission was shifting really hard and missing gears and the driveshaft seal had failed and begun leaking as well. The vehicle had approximately 90k miles on it, and Ford didn't even recommend a transmission service/fluid change until 100k. I drive almost exclusively highway, rarely use 4WD, and had only towed twice with less than half it's capacity. I pressed the Dealer and Ford on how it's possible that a transmission fails before it's first recommended service. They said it shouldn't have and offered to replace my transmission with a remanufactured one for the low price of over $9,000. I had the transmission rebuilt at a local shop who said they are regularly rebuilding these expedition transmissions and that they fail frequently. The vehicle losing all power to the wheels, with no warning lights and searching for gears with no warning is incredibly dangerous. After doing this several times, it did eventually throw the first loss of power blinking lights across the dashboard, and day transmission fault.

Dec 20, 2025

The incident occurred while traveling at 75 mph on the interstate. The car felt like it tried to put itself in park and slammed forward violently, at that time it came up with a shift fault light on the display, it shifted to neutral so there was no movement of the vehicle it was free wheeling, then it slammed itself back in a low gear where the vehicle slammed hard and the car engine was redlined. The transmission then proceeded to shift back up into a higher gear. All this while traveling at 75 mph. My concern, if one of my kids were driving it, or the road conditions would have been wet or snowy we would of had a very different outcome. The vehicle was sent to a Ford dealer where they found a park shift failure and shift issues recommending a new transmission. Ford was not willing to warranty the transmission even with the issues experienced and forced me to pay 60 percent of the cost. I find this hard to believe since a family could've been severely injured or killed. Previous to this incident, there were no warnings, lights, or concerns, the issue came out of the blue.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 25E070000 (Power Train); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that he lived near a School Zone and was concerned that the failure could occur, causing the vehicle to strike and injure children on the road. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and advised the contact that the vehicle was safe to drive because the recall was not a safety recall. The contact had not experienced a failure.

I got a brand new transmission put in at the beginning of the year but my whole car spits and sputters and shakes going 45 and when I am backing up it throws me forward(almost in the car in front of me) instead of reversing and making a loud clinking noise

My 2020 Ford Expedition Platinum VIN [XXX] miles suddenly began harsh shifting violent kicking/jerking and lunging between gears while driving at highway speeds 65-80mph. The vehicle slams into gear unexpectedly and has nearly caused loss of control on multiple occasions. Dealership diagnosed CDF drum failure in the 10R80 automatic transmission requiring full transmission replacement at a cost of 8,057 (TSB 25-2132 and prior TSBs). This is a known widespread safety defect affecting thousands of 2018-2022 Ford vehicles equipped with the 10R80 transmission. Ford has issued multiple TSBs and is currently facing class-action litigation over this exact failure. Despite the clear safety implications and identical cases being approved for 100% goodwill coverage, ford is refusing full repair coverage in my case. This defect presents an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Transmission stalls, shifts hard, shutters,. Had the transmission rebuilt about four months agoand similar issues are already starting with the rebuilt transmission.

Nov 4, 2025

The transmission failed. It is being rebuilt when the dealership can get to it. So it's available until then. The transmission would slip, lag shifting or slam into gear sporadically and unpredictably. This caused inconvenience at best and erratic vehicle behavior that endangered myself and other drivers at worst. This has been confirmed by the dealer who recommended a rebuild with improved parts to correct this know condition/failure. Yes the Ford dealer inspected the transmission. There we never any warnings or messages to indicate anything is wrong. The symptoms progressed for a couple days before I brought it to Ford.

2020 Ford Expedition FX4. Towing a four wheeler and motorcycle on the expressway. The suv was in tow / haul mode and on cruise. The car downshifted to go up a incline and made a booming noise and then composed its self. Shortly after, I tried to pass a car, and the trans downshifted, made a couple of loud clunks, shuddered, lost all power. After a couple terrifying seconds it composed itself, found gear and maintained speed, acceleration was not possible as the trans would go out of gear. Further down the road, it did the same thing, clunk, clunk out of gear, no power. There were NO warning lights. I took it out of tow mode and tried both sport and standard settings, both had similar issues. This was the scariest situation I have ever been in with a car mechanical issue. Note: We were ~120 miles into the 160mile trip. The OAT temperature was ~45 degrees. Trans temp showed 250 degrees when acting up, and dropped to 220 by the time the trip ended. Odometer shows ~77k. CPO, dealer maintained.

Oct 25, 2025

While overtaking another vehicle on the interstate at 75 mph, a loud clunk was heard and drive power was temporarily lost as the car slowed by 20 mph. The transmission subsequently reengaged, enabling the vehicle to regain speed. At that time, there was no traffic behind. No warning lights appeared, and the dashboard gauge indicated normal transmission temperature. The transmission fluid had been changed approximately 5,000 miles earlier during the 100,000-mile service. Since this event occurred late Friday afternoon, I was unable to contact the dealer.

I am writing to bring attention to what I believe is a serious and ongoing issue related to the design of my vehicle’s transmission system. I recently contacted Ford Motor Corp. regarding this matter and was assigned a case number; however, the case was open and closed within a 5-minute conversation. I was informed that there are currently no known issues or recalls related to the transmission in my vehicle. Despite this, there is a problem I continue to experience recurring transmission problems that raise significant safety concerns while operating the vehicle at various speeds. Erratic and unreliable shifting, the transmission often feels like it is “floating” between gears, shifting abruptly, or sometimes not shifting at all. Slipping gear, there are frequent instances many of which I would consider close calls where the transmission slips during acceleration, causing a sudden and unexpected loss of power. These issues make it extremely unsafe to perform routine driving maneuvers such as pulling out from a stop sign into moving highway traffic, crossing busy intersections, merging onto highways, or responding quickly to changing traffic conditions. The inconsistent vehicle response under normal driving conditions puts not only my family, but others on the road, at significant risk. Based on my own experience and further research, I am concerned that this may be a broader, well-documented issue that has not been adequately addressed by the manufacturer. The ford dealerships are aware of this problem and are so inundated that the current dealership cannot even see my vehicle for over a month and i am told have parts delay due to the repair demand. Given the nature and potential danger of these transmission problems, I respectfully urge a thorough investigation into this matter. Thank you for your attention to this serious concern.

Transmission losing power while driving. This is a known safety hazard with this 10R80 10 speed transmission with a poorly designed CDF drum. Ford chooses to wait and hope for power train warranty to expire so can be fixed at customer’s expense. This is a safety issue. If I was entering a roadway and needed to accelerate and car had no power, a terrible accident could happen.

Oct 1, 2025

Transmission exhibits harsh shifting and slippage. One scary example is when accelerating at highway speeds, transmission will occasionally and suddenly drop into first gear causing complete loss of power to the wheels. On occasion will also display transmission warning on dash and lock into 4th gear, causing vehicle to exhibit downshift breaking and rapidly slow vehicle when in traffic at highway speeds.

Aug 30, 2025

While driving on the interstate (I-35) and attempting to pass a vehicle, the transmission went out of gear and felt like it was in neutral for a few seconds and then ‘clunked” back into gear finally. This happened 4 times that day. This happens almost every time we go on a trip with this vehicle and is extremely dangerous to my family as well as other drivers. This seems to be a common issue with this model/year. It’s been reported to our dealer multiple times and they attempt to reprogram but doesn’t change anything. They said there’s no other fix. I have extended warranty.

Aug 28, 2025

Transmission has exhibited harsh/delayed engagement and/or harsh/delayed shift during lane changes, almost causing me to crash on two occasions.

Recall issue with Catalytic converters causing check engine light to come on. I took in for recall to reset check engine light. Repair did not do anything to vehicle as check engine light comes on for a few days and goes away for a few days and the cycle repeats up until this day it continues to happen. When they did the reset Ford let me know that they reset the check engine issue for recall but I would have to pay about $5k for getting new converters if I wanted to because light would still be one since it was diagnosed that converters were bad.

Aug 25, 2025

Ongoing problem already had 2 repairs done to transmission. Gears o not shift properly when the gears go from 3-4 and 6-7. If I am not careful when I press on the gas and try to accelerate it does not shift gears and gets stuck on and my truck will not move more than 5-10 mph while I am trying to get on the highway at times with trailers coming full speed ahead behind me. I have reported this issue many times. There has been no remedy. The gears get stuck and make a jerking motion and movement causing truck to slow and barely move. It is not just a one time thing so I cant give a specific date as it happens often.

We own a Ford Expedition 2020. In 2023, we started noticing jerky, harsh, and aggressive “slips” when the vehicle was trying to change gears - upon multiple occasions. But, in 2024, we experienced three, major, different instances - all were extremely scary and it was miraculous they didn’t cause accidents, car pile ups, or worse! The first instance, the vehicle jerked and sputtered just as I was pulling out into a busy intersection. I thought it was going to die in the middle of the road. The second instance, several weeks later, it happened, again, as our family was driving in pouring rain down the interstate; it jerked so hard it felt like we hit a small wall. The third and final instance, we were on our way to vacation - 9 hours away with our family. It sputtered, jerked, and laid in 1st gear. Thank God, we were right at a hotel and able to pull in. We found a local mechanic to take the Expedition in and begin work on it. He was so kind to loan us his car to take on to PA to the Sight & Sound Theater so we wouldn’t lose our money on the tickets. We ended up losing 2 full days of our 4 day vacation; had to rent a vehicle to drive back home; and left our Expedition in VA for 6 weeks while they rebuilt a transmission and cleaned the catalytic converter. $12,160 to the mechanic + $1000 in car rentals. Here we are, now in August 2025, and there’s been a recall on the Powertrain Control Module and that’s being replaced. Lo, and behold, what does the PCM do? It acts as the vehicle’s main computer, managing and controlling various engine and TRANSMISSION functions (adjusting engine parameters like fuel injection, ignition timing, and transmission shift points) - imagine that!

Driving and transmission gear bumping hard when shifting gears. Have pulled out twice to pass and transmission made hard bump and I could not go anywhere. The last time this happened was 7/29/25 and it made a lot of clanking noise and the faulty light came on. I let off the gas and it went back in gear and I made it home and have not drove it since. Ford dealership said there was no recall on transmission but I have read alot of complaints from other 2020 Expedition owners about this problem I have 70,000. plus miles and have taken extreme care of this vehicle.

Failure of transmission, leading to unsafe operation on roadway.

Jul 23, 2025

Info sent to Ford in working with cust service w/o action: Our 2020 Expedition had 4 separate instances of slipping out of gear during a road trip (2 instances on 7/11 and 2 on 7/19). During each incident, the vehicle slipped gear at highway speed, RPMs maxed out on the dial, lost all acceleration and significant speed, and the vehicle remained unresponsive for several (3-5) seconds until finally accelerating after the unresponsive period. It goes without saying that completely losing gear at highway speed while navigating traffic is a serious life and safety issue. Having that occur four times on a single round trip presents unreasonable risk. We documented the mileage and engine conditions by taking a picture of the dash after recovering from each occurrence. Those details were shared with the Krieger Ford service center on 7/22. That Ford service team was not able to recover fault codes from this information. Without being able to identify a root cause based on lack of fault codes, Ford Service performed a transmission relearn on 7/22. The service team confirmed this step is an initial measure due to lack of codes and not being able to see inside the sealed transmission. Abandoning further assessment in favor of a potential but unlikely quick-fix may be appropriate with an inconvenience issue, but not acceptable on one with such serious consequences. I recognize that further assessment will require additional cost. The assessment cost relative to the risk associated with not properly addressing the root cause of this dangerous issue is clearly justified. I’ve previously communicated this same situation to Ford when it occurred on a road trip in July of 2024. We contacted the dealership (Germain Ford of Dublin) and were deferred multiple months due to Ford's transmission tech backlog. The codes were not available by the time a service appointment was open. Without error codes and a single occurrence at that time, Ford service was unable to investigate further.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle failed to accelerate properly while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer; however, the dealer failed to duplicate the failure. The contact stated that after several visits to the dealer, the dealer acknowledged the failure, and a valve body replacement was performed. The contact stated that the failure returned, and the failure became more frequent. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, and the ignition coils and spark plugs were replaced. The vehicle was valeted back to the residence, and the valet informed the contact that the failure was still present. The valet brought the vehicle back to the dealer, where it remained. The vehicle was diagnosed with a defective transmission, and the contact was informed that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

On several occasions the engine has slipped/stalled. Vehicle has only 27k miles on it, single owner. When moving from a stoplight the engine "slipped", all lights came on "service alert" or something similar. Vehicle recovered but I am very uneasy as I am a [XXX] female usually [XXX] and often on a very busy section of [XXX]. (This has occurred multiple times) When increasing speed, as to pass a vehicle or otherwise, vehicle is unresponsive or lags. To be clear this happens at speeds of 40-50 mph. It is unpredictable when this will occur nor why. I will likely sell this vehicle due to this safety issue. I spoke with a service rep at the local ford dealership who was able to look into the vehicle computer remotely but there was no record of the "Alert" or otherwise. I took the vehicle to my local mechanic who drove it and was able to replicate the danger/slipping. I was advised to do "zip code" driving only. I believe this "engine slipping" is related to the Recall just issued except the 2020 Ford Expedition is not included in this recall. Others have noted this issue as well with NHTSA. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Powertrain Control Module (PCM), which manages engine-transmission communication and regulates cooling system performance, malfunctioned, resulting in a cascade of related failures: Transmission system: Delayed shifting, hesitation, and eventually a “transmission stuck in park” code. Cooling system: Repeated overheating that led to a ruptured radiator. These issues stem from the faulty PCM referenced in Ford Recall 24E13, issued on April 25, 2025. Yes, the failed components remain in the possession of Harbin Motor Company in Scottsboro, AL, where the vehicle is still located. The vehicle has not been repaired and is available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? This vehicle was operated while exhibiting documented powertrain and overheating symptoms—including while transporting children. Harbin Ford repeatedly instructed continued use despite: Diagnostic scans on April 10, 2025 confirming PCM-related failures including “transmission stuck in park” and overheating. A coolant leak that occurred without warning lamps, leading to the radiator bursting. These failures put occupants at serious risk of breakdown or fire, especially in high-traffic or high-temperature driving conditions. Operating a vehicle with a malfunctioning PCM increases the likelihood of gear slippage, sudden deceleration, or complete transmission failure. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. The issue has been repeatedly confirmed by Harbin Motor Company, an authorized Ford dealer: On April 10, 2025, a scan identified “transmission stuck in park,” overheating, and a third unidentified code. On May 15, 2025, the service manager Craig Davis confirmed the transmission had an internal issue requiring a full rebuild and located a coolant leak. These confirmations were documented via servi

I’ve owned my 2020 Ford Expedition for just over a year. Initially, the transmission performed flawlessly. However, over time I’ve noticed a few concerning issues: At low speeds, the transmission shifts very hard. While accelerating at interstate speeds, it feels like the transmission is slipping. When I shift the vehicle into gear, it makes a loud clicking or knocking sound.

I was driving pulling off an exit incoming to a highway that needed me to speed up to catch a 65 MPH traffic while I was going 35MPH the car while on D for drive somehow engine REV went up to 5500 RPM no power to drive vehicle slow down to 30MPH and all of the sudden a Violent engine and all the body clunk as if another gear or Park all of the sudden! Tires stop spinning as you can hear tires screeching and this lasted a second and then transmission caught up again and started to accelerate again normally. We were almost hit from a moving truck behind us with 3 small kids in the car! This already happened 3 separate times while we are out traveling out of our hometown. 98 degrees outside dry conditions flat surface in Florida Got it all on Dash Camera on VIDEO and Audio Hope to get this fixed before someone gets KILLED!

The transmission is consistently hesitating to switch gears, very jerky gear shift, and will sometimes completely fall out of gear. You could so easily lose control if this happened on the highway. Thank goodness we weren’t on a busy street. This isn’t the first reporting according to a simple search online and there should be a recall for safety reasons. This could be life or death for someone driving on the highway.

Jun 14, 2025

Transmission hesitated when entering traffic almost causing accident. This is not the first time this has happened. After the first incident I addressed the issue with the service manager. He said it’s common that this model transmission shifts rough, and has some hick ups but, nothing to worry about. It also randomly shifts into neutral randomly.

i bought a 2020 ford expedition with the 10r80 transmission last july. They have used this transmission since 2017 and continue to put it in vehicles depite having many issues with them. When i was sold this vehicle i was told it had a new transmission just put in it (by another dealership than who i was buying it from) and the carfax (that i still have) shows that the transmission had been replaced. In the last month or so ive been having a hard shift at 4th and 8th gear. i figured it would be covered under warranty so i take it back to the dealership that did the work. They said it didnt have a new transmission only the cdf clutch was replaced. now when i look at the carfax it only shows the tranmission was rebuilt. Thats Fraud. a dealership shouldnt be able to change a entry. i was only 2231 miles over the powertrain warranty and ford will not help. the part that was fixed only had a year warranty and it just a month past a year since it was repaired. Ford knows this tranmission has problems and should be held accountable. i look forward to hearing from someone.

My check engine lights comes on and off reading that it is a failure with the catalytic converter. Check engine light had been on for 2 weeks I had already called Ford to set up appt. The evening before taking truck in check engine light went off. I called Ford 5/13/25 that light had gone off do I still take truck in. Since I received letter for recall, I took truck in for service . They say they only need to reprogram the PCM but now they are saying that the Catalytic Converter is bad and needs to be replaced costing $5000. What is Ford thinking this truck has been nothing but problems. I told tech that truck has been running accelerated for a few weeks when driving. Problem with check engine light could not be reproduced since it turned off the day before I had appt set. Rep told me that they just needed to see if they could read that it was the recall issue and they would just reprogram it.

This suv has 10 speed transmission that has faulty harsh shifting hesitation, acceleration problem when shifting on highway or in situations when you need to slow down and or accelerate. This has happened many times while trying to get on the highway and switching lanes. I have almost been run over because it stalled someone is going to get killed. I have had the Powertrain control module pcm reprogramed twice and it keeps happening. Ford is aware of this. They need to get this trucks off of the road!

At highway speed 70mph, I accelerated and the vehicle downshifted to 1st, followed by loss of gear with a loud clunk. Then alarming for transmission. After coasting to about 30mph the teansmission clunked again and powere cane back. Happened while passing a semi truck. This was reproduced multiple times, on demand and I have video documentation. Dealer eventually rehauled the transmission. But now its starting to miss gears / have hard shifts. This transmission is a Huge safety risk.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that occasionally, while putting the vehicle into drive or attempting to accelerate from a stop, the vehicle first hesitated or jerked before shifting into gear. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the CDF drums and seal in the transmission were faulty and needed to be replaced. Additionally, a transmission strategy download and transmission shift adapt tables needed to be performed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.

At 45000 miles the transmission started slipping gears, we took into our local ford dealership for a warranty repair. They had it for a month and a half stated the computer just needed reprograming. Well now we sit at 72000 miles and the vehicle needs a WHOLE new transmission. They are stating that due to axial movement of the CDF clutch cylinder bushing it has caused failure of the transmission. My vehicle has came to a complete stop no warning multiple times in the middle of the roadway, I have been stopped at a red light and when I hit the gas, the car rolled backwards. There were ZERO warning lights, only a hard shift every now and than. The car is currently at the dealership and ford is refusing to help even with multiple other vehicles with this same issue. They have sent me a 10k bill. From my understanding this same transmission has already been recalled in other ford vehicles.

When accelerating quickly, such as to pass, the truck feels as if it is in neutral. when the gas pedal is pushed down, the RPMs jump up, but the truck doesn't accelerate. After letting off the gas, the RPMs will drop, there is a loud "clunk" in the rear end and then power will be restored. No codes are being stored to diagnose issue. Happens intermittently and all speeds.

Apr 23, 2025

The vehicle's transmission shutters upon rapid acceleration, especially at high speeds. It feels like it goes into neutral while trying to shift and jerks into the next gear. The RPMs shoot up and back down when this happens. You can also feel the car lose power (decelerate) when this happens.

A 2020 vehicle with 80K miles is in need of a new transmission, after having hard shifting problems a few months previous. Rarely used for any towing. Appears to have a defective transmission.

Apr 14, 2025

We have replaced our transmission twice and sending the truck in for a third replacement. The transmission does not run smooth and when it shifts from 3rd to 4th gear it drops into gear very roughly. The last time it did this the TCM also faulted which stuck the truck in 7th gear while driving on a highway. Ford will only replace with the same part in a manufactured condition.

My 2020 Ford Expedition was repaired by Ford (under the power train warranty) in early 2024 for down shifting and loss of power when attempting to accelerate. That repair took multiple weeks. Last week (March 2025), while driving on the highway at 75mph, the vehicle lost all acceleration and the power train warning light came on. We pulled over since we could not accelerate. The vehicle was brought to the same Ford dealership where they diagnosed another transmission issue. The vehicle remains at the dealership until Ford determines an exact diagnosis and how they will proceed. The vehicle has now had two major transmission issues, the second of which occurred at highway speeds. The vehicle was purchased new in June 2020 and currently has 56k miles.

Apr 1, 2025

First my vehicle kept saying service shift system fault, then when the dealership did something to repair that, the next week they told me I need a new transmission. This put my family of seven at risk because the transmission started stalling while we were going on a trip and also had a hard time shifting to different gears and would make a clunking sound. We also started rolling backwards down a hill and barely made it up the hill. The car also started stalling while I was driving it on the interstate which almost made us get into a multi car accident at night. When I took my vehicle to one ford dealership they told me it was the transmission but when I took it to a different one they told me something else just for them to fix it and then a week later tell me it’s the transmission. My Expedition has been at the Ford dealership for over two weeks now because I’m trying to get goodwill assistance from the Ford corporate office. The warning sign that came on was service system fault and a wrench light.

The Shift Cable is not seating correctly causing the vehicle to slip out of gear. This mostly occurs if you are at cruising speed and then accelerate to pass a slow vehicle. The Transmission slips out of gear and then you have to decelerate to allow it to find gear. It also makes a hard clunking noise when shifting out of park into drive. This is the same exact issue that was recalled for the police versions. However, my vehicle has the exact same issue and concern, verified by the Ford Technician. Mine is not covered under the recall as it only covers Police versions. So I was asked to pay $9,859 for a new transmission. I am 6,000 miles outside of warranty and have no vehicle to drive now as my 4 year old vehicle is basically totaled over a transmission. Ford Corporate declined any financial assistance even though it is a known product issue.

My vehicle without notice just pops into neural and i get a warning on my dash it has happened several times and every time it has happened it has been on a busy freeway. Very dangerous conditions . I have taken into the ford place to get checked out. also my Ford app had notifications.

While driving on a highway at approximately 40mph, attempted to pass a slower vehicle. I accelerated and the vehicle dropped down in gear, started shuddering, lost power and the MIL light started flashing. I pulled to the side of the road and the vehicle shifted into another gear and seemed to operate normally. Vehicle is currently at the Ford dealership, where they say that I need a new transmission.

Transmission, it is available for inspections. Loss of acceleration power while at interstate speed, the otr driver behind us could barely stop quick enough. Two more occurrences happened same trip while driving from New Orleans to Lake Charles. Driving 75 in left lane, took foot off accelerator to coast and navigate into right lane and while transmission was supposed to be downshift, I lost power again and watched my RPM’s rise suddenly. Ford dealership ran diagnostics, and told me the valve body needs replaced at roughly 2k, I am 15000 out of warranty and they acted like they knew but wouldn’t help me. An independent transmission dealer in Lake Charles told me to trade the vehicle in or put a 2025 ford transmission in at 7k, the problem is, I don’t have that kind of money, and this should absolutely not be happening at 85k miles. He insisted the transmission was damaged and dangerous to be driving, and this is prevalent with the type of transmission in fords and chevy’s from 2019-2024. No warning lights or alarms came on at the time of these incidents that I recall, honestly I was too busy making sure I didn’t kill my wife and 4 kids. Apparently, this is a well known issue with these transmission, but now I’m faced with having to either trade in a vehicle that I am most likely upside down on, to no fault of my own, having to purchase a new vehicle that fits my family, or purchasing a 2025 ford transmission at the recommendation of local transmission dealer, there is no history on ford 2025 transmissions so idk if this the way to go. While I will get this figured out, I am taking the time to express my personal concern and experience in this matter and hope there are no future casualties related to this issue, which I’m afraid Ford will only address if there is, sadly.

Mar 24, 2025

I was driving my vehicle at 48 mph and went to accelerate; the car slips out of gear and drops into neutral, started smelling smoke. This is the 5th occurrence. Previous occurrence happened while traveling in dark, rainy weather on the interstate. I am lucky that no accident occurred. I had car serviced for this same issue in 8/2024, but they did not fix the transmission issue. The vehicle is currently at the dealership service department. The dealer has been unable to reproduce the issue as it has happened a handful of times and does not give the service department a diagnostic code upon diagnosing. The dealer service department inspected the vehicle and is saying that I need a whole new transmission, although the first time I took it in for the same issue they fixed the throttle body, which is completely unrelated to the transmission. At the time of all of the incidents, the car flashes a "system fault/failure". It happens so quickly I cannot remember exactly what it says. When service department tries to diagnose there are no diagnostic codes. No warning symbols appear on dash after car is shut-off and restarted. This seems to be a known issue with Ford 10-speed transmissions (10R80). Why have they not had to recall these? I am lucky that I have not injured in these incidents. Are they waiting for someone to get critically hurt??

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred, and the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact returned the vehicle to the same dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that a hose on the transmission had not been installed correctly. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred two more times, and the vehicle was returned to the same dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.

Hello, my name is [XXX] and I’m writing in regards to the transmission issues with my Ford expedition. I have reached out to the customer service line and currently my vehicle is at confidence Ford in Norman, OK. I’ve had issues with this vehicle since I bought it New and I’ve tried multiple times to have the transmission repaired. It has been to Patriot Ford in Purcell, OK(No longer in business), Zeke Ford in Purcell, OK (No longer in business) Woody Ford in Madill, OK.I’ve tried multiple times to get it into other dealerships, lastly it has ended up at Confidence Ford, Norman, OK. Due to the nature of the transmission, it has caused multiple problems and almost deadly situations. This vehicle has been stalling out and losing power since the day we bought it. CUSTOMER SERVICE said that they cannot help us because it is over the hundred thousand miles mark, but I have continued to seek Support and Repair Services since I bought it new in 2021. If you recall during this time, it was after Covid when there was limited resources for repairs and dealerships to offer loaner vehicles or to even rent loaner vehicles. So in the situation of not being able to keep it in service they would give it back. Before I bought this vehicle new, I owned the exact same vehicle that I had bought preowned from Seth Wadley Ford in Pauls Valley, OK. The previous vehicle had the exact same issues and was a Complete LEMON. The previous vehicle had to be traded in for a new one. We thought that buying a new one hoping It would not be a lemon, and with a warranty that we would not have a problem and that the previous one was a fluke. Sadly it was not. I have almost been T-bone, rear ended and hit head on with my 3 young children in the car on multiple occasions, too many to count. The transmission on my Ford Expedition is "slipping" and causing safety concern when there is a need to accelerate or decelerate, but the transmission is struggling to shift into 8th gear and then when it finally does, it causes an abrupt jerk. This has put my family in at risk several times, but we had an incident this morning and I decided it needed to be reported. The dealer was able to inspect, diagnose, and confirm that the issue was that the "CDF drum that holds the gears in the transmission." The issue was repaired under the existing powertrain warranty, however, the exact same issue is now occurring again for a second time a few months after the initial repair. This leads me to believe the parts are faulty and need to be replaced with a different/better part. I also want to share that this issue is being experienced by other people that I know who drive newer Fords. There were no warning messages or lights the initial time or this current time.

The transmission has been having problems for a year. Ford changed the valve plate in transmission due to hesitation and then jerky gear shifting. Problem is still happening. Car hesitates when shifting gears and then jerks. Sometimes the car will no shift gears and go when needed. Almost got in a wreck because it would not accelerate.

Frequently when driving my 2020 Ford Expedition max the transmission slips out of gear causing it to go into neutral and put me in a position when i am unable to accelerate my vehicle. This happens mostly on the freeway when we are driving 65 MPH and greatly endangers the safety of my family. Reading several on-line forums indicates this is a common problem and should be fixed via a recall. Also, my dashboard viewing screen often turns black for no reason when using or simply does not turn on.

Dec 13, 2024

The transmission in the car caused a complete loss of power. The car stopped in the middle of the street and was almost rear-ended. Our infant son was in the car at the time. We were very worried about our safety. The "see manual" warning light flashed on the screen. We had to place the car into neutral and was able to finally make it to a safe location.

Dec 5, 2024

While driving in the city or on the highway when accelerating, the car will lose power almost like it shifted to neutral - pressing the gas does not do anything then all of a sudden the expedition will rapidly catch gear causing the car to jerk all of the passengers. It is very unsafe and we have almost been rear ended due to this. It is extremely unsafe and scary. I notice it happening frequently on the highway if you accelerate to enter the highway or to pass another vehicle but have also noticed it in the city at lower speeds. Almost every time in 4th gear and 7-8th gear on the ten speed automatic 2020 ford expedition. I took it to ford where they said there were no recalls. When this happens a lot of pop ups on the dash board pop up and then quickly go away. Service transmission. Service powertrain. Loss in power. Just to name a few.

Transmission jerky and randomly kicks out of gear on higher speed creates dangerous situations on highway.Previously reported problem!Ford failed to repair despite multiple requests!Putting my family in danger!

Nov 20, 2024

The transmission slipped out upon acceleration. I was trying to move out of the way of emergency vehicles when the transmission lost all gear numbers and "Service Transmission" popped up on the screen. I depressed the accelerator and the transmission went to gear 1 and then went back to the appropriate gear number 5. This has been happening now for over 2 years off and on. I tried to have the dealer diagnosis it before 60,000 and they couldn't find anything wrong. I have talked to multiple people who have expeditions as well and they are experiencing the same issue.

Nov 18, 2024

We have experienced the problems of bad shifting, error codes, sudden deceleration, lack of acceleration and the vehicle going into "limp mode" over the past three years. These events have been extremely dangerous as they have occurred at highway speed multiple times and have occurred while towing a boat. We had taken it into the dealer in in September of 2022 and the dealer claimed they could not find a problem. It should be noted that the vehicle was under warranty at the time. We continued to experience the problems and took it to a different Ford dealer last week and they found the problem and stated the vehicle was subject to a TSB about the transmission and said the transmission must be replaced. And it was not covered by warranty or recall. I have researched the issue and there are hundreds of complaints about Ford's 10 speed transmission having problems. This is a dangerous problem and Ford is aware of it and will not take responsibility.

Nov 18, 2024

Vehicle does not shift properly usually during gears 3-7 and it skips and jerks really bad and it loses power. It happened as I was entering expressway and vehicle lost power and I almost got hit by a tractor trailer from behind.

Nov 8, 2024

I have experienced on multiple occasions when driving that the transmission doesn’t know what gear to go to when shifting. If I accelerate and have to let off the gas because traffic is slowing down and they start going again the transmission doesn’t know what to do and no matter how far you push the pedal the engine doesn’t do nothing. The transmission doesn’t kick in and you have to go to the side praying you don’t get hit before it’ll go into gear. This has happened while merging on the interstate and regular traffic and I took it to Ford and they told me it was normal. To me this does not seem normal imposes a severe safety risk.

The ten speed transmission that is standard on Ford vehicles of this caliber, has begun to skip gears. There appears to be a delay in switching from fifth gear to seventh gear. The exact same problem occurred on our last 2018 expedition max to the point the transmission was nearly inoperable. This ultimately led to a replacement of the transmission costing $6000. The vehicle became undrivable at that time due to potential hazard of driving and warnings from our mechanic. Our current vehicle has not yet been evaluated by Ford mechanics. The same symptomatic changes are occurring on this car as did the last. The car will go to the mechanics in short order. There is concern that there is a faulty transmission being manufactured due to the same problem occurring in the same make, and model of vehicle only two years apart.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 70-75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and unintendedly shifted to various gears continuously. The power train warning light was illuminated. The message "Power Train - Engine Failure - See Owner’s Manual" was displayed. Additionally, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the transmission assembly. The message "Reduced Engine Power“ was displayed, and the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The temperature gauge displayed 285 degrees. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The contact was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the transmission yoke was replaced; however, the failure recurred several times while driving. The vehicle was taken to Red McCombs Ford (8333 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78230) and to Griffith Ford Seguin (1880 I-10, Seguin, TX 78155); where the transmission was replaced and rebuilt several times; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated while driving 75 MPH, the transmission was shifting hard and was continuously shifting from high gear to low gear. The check engine warning light and several unknown warning lights were illuminated. Another driver honked and drew the contact's attention. The contact noticed a trail of white smoke and that there was smoke coming from the engine bay. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road and allowed the vehicle to cool down. The vehicle was taken back to the first dealer to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could no longer assist in covering the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

I read that there is a recall on 2021/2022 Fords with Eco Boost but not the 2020. I have had my vehicle into the dealership multiple times due to misfires and loss of all power which has almost caused multiple accidents on the interstate. I accelerate to get into the left lane and lose all power and do not get power back until my vehicle decelerates down to around 40 mph/or a lower gear, causing semi’s and other vehicles to have to slam on their brakes so that they do no run into the back of me. It idles very roughly and overall has been the worst vehicle mechanically that I have ever owned. The dealerships always say they cannot find anything wrong with it or cannot reproduce it but it happens on a daily basis and keeps getting worse. I have had the transmission updated, changed the cool packs, and changed the plugs which has not helped at all. I want to know why the 2020 Expedition is not included in this recall? This is the most expensive vehicle I have ever purchased and I would expect it to run smoothly with no issues and I am very disappointed. Not only disappointed in the vehicle, but in Ford itself for not acknowledging this issue. I have read many complaints from other customers experiencing the same issues and unable to find a fix for it. I would like some answers and for Ford to make things right with my Expedition. I am not able to trade it in or sell it due to having all the issues that it has and frankly I’m not sure I trust Ford anymore or if I’ll ever buy a Ford product again and we have been faithful Ford owners for years. Thank you for your time and I’ll be looking forward to hearing back from you soon regarding this issue. This has happened many times throughout my ownership of the vehicle. At times, when trying to accelerate into traffic, changing lanes, etc. The vehicle make a loud clunking noise when it tries to downshift. The transmission acts as if it has no idea what gear to go into. A "system fault" with a wrench appears on the center display along with an audible alarm. The vehicle either loses power altogether or it has downshifted into an extremely low gear which brings the rpms near redline. On several occasions this has put my family in dangerous situations. We came close to getting in a collision more than once. It has frightened my daughter who has special needs. Upon bringing it to ford while the warranty was still in place, they claim they could not replicate the problem. On the way back home from the dealer, it happened again. We made ANOTHER appointment for service, they reflashed the transmission strategy and said it's fixed. It was ok for maybe a few weeks, but the problem continues. Now the warranty is up, and we are still stuck with the same issue which is becoming more and more frequent. Ford will not repair it without charging, yet this issue existed while the warranty was still in place. It's a known defect that presented itself while the warranty was still in place. It was never repaired, Ford only applied a band-aid to get past the powertrain warranty.

Sep 17, 2024

Driving at non-highway speeds on roads with hills, the vehicle aggressively downshifts occasionally. It isn't all the time, and it is difficult to duplicate, but it feels rough. I believe a TSB has been issued for this issue. It is well documented and should be recalled, as the known issue was repaired in the 2024 model.

Transmission started shifting hard (into and out of park to drive) and (between 3-4 and 7-8 gears). I brought my concerns to the dealership at the end of 2023 and asked if it could be reprogrammed. The advisor stated that the transmission was going bad and to just keep driving it until it failed because they are seeing a lot of failures. In July 2024 we pulled onto the highway when we attempted accelerate the engine revved to redline and the vehicle stopped accelerating. When the gas pedal was lifted the transmission started grinding back into gear. We had to slowly push the gas pedal down to get it home at 30mph. Every time it downshifted it would stop accelerating. Ford did a complete transmission replacement. I also have a 2019 F150 [XXX] ) with 79000 miles on it and it is now showing the same signs of failure with shifting. Sep 8, 2024

From early on, the vehicle had a hard shift from 7 to 8. This was discussed with the dealership and they claimed they couldn’t recreate it. This has been the life of the vehicle. About 6 months ago it began to hard shift in other gears. 3 to 4 being the most common. Then 2 months ago it would slow down, you could hear grinding, then jerk violently forward (finally getting into gear). When we called the dealership to ask they said they would have to look at it. But it was not consistent enough. The vehicle eventually began to slip from gear and jerk forward into gear, everyday. Almost causing me to be rear ended multiple times. Loosing speed at anytime and causing random speeds with the inability to regain speed until the car “found” a gear. I would be driving 60 mph and it would find a lower gear and jerk into gear. It needs a whole new transmission. FORD is aware of this issue with the 10R80 transmission. 3.5 eco boost. My car is un driveable now. It fails to find a gear. A quick Google search will showcase exact stories just like mine with people saying the exact same thing. Harsh shifting. Jerking. Grinding. Loosing speed while driving. FORD didn’t have a fix for anyone. And now new transmissions are the only fix. Please inspect.

Sep 3, 2024

The 2020 Ford expedition has transmission issues. It will slip gears in the middle of driving, it will stall when trying to change gears from park to reverse to drive. When accelerating the vehicle will rev up in RPMs and drastically drop speed I’ve had to almost come to a complete stop on the interstate driving 70+ miles an hour. There were no lights or warnings that appeared on the dash. We took it to a mechanic to have it inspected and we were told that we need to replace the entire transmission. We contacted the Ford dealer in which we purchased it from and they are not willing to address the issue. I am a mother of four children, and I’m regularly driving in the vehicle to take them to and from school and various activities. I am very concerned about the safety of myself as well as my children. Should we be driving and the transmission completely shut down. Since having the vehicle looked at by a mechanic, the warning signs have now turned on and appear every time I start the vehicle.

On multiple occasions, our car has lurched out of gear going at fast speeds on the highway. It slips out of gear and the car shakes and then it lunges back into gear. On a few occasions, the gas pedal was also inoperable while the car was "finding the right gear". This has been extremely scary for my family when this has happened. The first time we took it to the dealership and they reprogrammed the transmission. Then, it happened again about 6 weeks after the fix, and this time the transmission valve had to be replaced.

Multiple times our car has experienced issues of transmission stalling while at highway speeds, the most recent Wednesday August 7th upon acceleration on highway car lost power and ability to accelerate, a ticking noise was noticeable, very brief shifting alert came across dash and disappeared quickly, no alert was sent to my phone application. The engine did not completely die, but briefly had no power, after letting off of the gas momentarily and re trying the car shifted hard and began to accelerate again. We did take our car to the Ford garage in April of 2024 with these very complaints, we were told no such issues were found with our transmission and ended up having to pay a fee despite our car being under warranty.

Vehicle 10 speed transmission issues. 3x in ford dealer for diagnostics and repairs. 3rd time they did a transmission rebuild. Vehicle was apparently deemed fixed and safe Since then I have almost had 2 head on collisions with 4kids and 3 adults in the vehicle at a speed of 60mph. I went to pass on a single lane road & as I pulled out and put my foot down on the gas the transmission clunked loud, went into neutral and just revved very high rpms. I had to pull back in to my lane in which the car behind me had moved up and there was no space. If it wasn’t a head on collision I could have been rear ended. I also slowed from 70mph to turn a corner and as I started the turn the transmission could find its gear and launched forward.

When driving down the freeway at about 65 mph, i started to accelerate and the transmission disengaged and all power was lost. I let off the gas and about 10-15 seconds later the transmission engaged and i could accelerate. This has happened on two occasions so far. This could have caused someone to crash into me as all power was lost.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS FAULTY. FALLS INTO NEUTRAL AT HIGHWAY SPEED. LOSS OF ABILITY TO ACCLERATE. POTENTIAL FOR COLLISION.

Jul 18, 2024

I bought a 2020 Ford Expedition 2 years ago and since the first day I have had issues with the transmission. I will be driving on the highway, and it will throw me into a lower gear, and I cannot accelerate or do anything until a loud bang is heard and the transmission goes back into the correct gear. I have had the expedition into the dealership and each time been told there is nothing wrong with it. I came across a lawsuit for F150 for the same issue and brought it to the dealerships attention and they told me they did not know anything about that and that nothing was wrong with my Expedition. I finally caught what it does on video and sent it to the dealership and they stopped responding to me after I sent the proof over. This has put not only myself but my children and husband in danger. When this happens, a wrench pops up on the display screen and then goes away.

Issue is with Ford 10R80 transmission. While at freeway speeds ( 60/65 MPH) transmission is engaged in 8th/9th gear and you command vehicle to downshift to a passing gear (3rd for example) with a 3/4 throttle input - the gear indicator light shows 1st gear ( which is not possible going 60MPH ), but the vehicle falls into a false neutral basically loosing all power. The RPMs will rev all the way up, and you have to take your foot off of the accelerator and allow approx. 5 seconds of "coasting" before the vehicle is able to get itself back into a gear to resume power. This failure happens basically on command, and you aren't able to apply more than 1/2 throttle while driving down the freeway. Reported defect to Peoria Ford who told me no TSB exists for this issue and they aren't able to fix anything because no DTC error codes exist in the computer so I need to come pick up the vehicle. I am not forced out of a Ford rental and back into a vehicle with a known safety defect according to your TSB bulletin 22-2428. Ford needs to recall these unsafe vehicles off the road instead of currently waiting for the warranties to run out on all of them so they aren't liable for repairs. This is a well known/documented safety problem and needs to be addressed ASAP with a nationwide recall. Also, power running boards fail to deploy causing a fall hazard ( my pregnant wife has fallen out and in of the vehicle because the step isnt there. If referencing the picture below : 1st gear, no power/boost gauge shows 0, vehicle is going 60 MPH on the freeway.

Hard shifting, and loss of sudden power while traveling. Recently purchased. No recalls yet. But having same issue's stayed on law site filed. vehicle lost power while accelerating to merge onto freeways or cross busy intersections.

The transmission does not operate properly. It frequently searches between gears when shifting and then shifts hard into the next gear. It makes loud clunking noises when decelerating. Numerous times when shifting from park to reverse the vehicle lurches. I brought the vehicle to the Ford dealer in March of 2023. The dealer stated they could not duplicate any issue that was not normal. Over time this has gotten worse. I have a second appointment with the dealer scheduled.

Incident happens every 1k miles or more. Car is in motion driving. Press down on throttle and transmission drops to 1st gear. A bunch clicking and thumping sounds are heard. Car doesnt accelerate(can be at 70mph), starts to slow quickly until gears change. Also 4H is jerky as well as sport mode. Very unsafe to be traveling on the highway trying to overtake a vehicle and then your car fails.

Vehicle had transmission rebuilt per dealership to fix transmission jerking and skipping/getting stuck in gears both on HWY and regular roads. Since rebuilt happened less than 90 days ago, my Ford EXP. is still doing the same thing. This past week alone it has happened to me 3 times. Instance on reg road going from about 10-15mph to accelerate and pressed on the gas and vehicle would not move and jerked until it shifted and was able to speed up twice this happened between gears 2-4 this happened. Next time this happened family was on hwy heading out of town while on hwy shifting lanes vehicle jerked and transmission noises happened louder than other times and vehicle got stuck on gears 6-8 when finally able to move normally. We were told when the dealership rebuilt the transmission since warranty would not cover a new one, that this should fix the problem or maybe think of trading my truck in for a newer one.(really not the answer I was looking for). Ford needs to take responsibility for these Expeditions coming out faulty. I had already send to shop right after transmission rebuilt and they could not do anything because they could not reproduce the issue again so here I am 60 days later and again with the same issue

While increasing acceleration the vehicle will jerk really hard and the check manual light will come on and act like it’s going to completely stop. When you let off the gas it will take a second but go back to normal. It’s very scary while in traffic

The 10 speed transmission lost all power and would not accelerate at freeway speeds. The engine was running and was working fine but had no power. Several severe jerks and then power was restored by the transmission. Losing power at freeway speeds almost cause accidents each of the 4 times it happened. Other vehicles had to take evasive action to avoid hitting me. The vehicle is current at a Ford Dealership for diagnostic and repair. I had a Shift System Fault error show on dash as well as See Manual warning as well

As I was merging into traffic, I began accelerating to get to the same speed as the flow of traffic. My transmission shifted, seemed to search for a gear, and was unable to engage. The transmission slammed in and out of gear and I was unable to gain any speed beyond the 45 MPH I was going and was almost rear ended getting into the I-5 as I could not get up to speed with normal traffic. I had to pull on to the side of the road for the safety of my family due to this continued issue. The ‘wrench’/check manual light came on. After sitting for a couple minutes I began driving again, it was very jerky shifting through the gears and very delayed between shifts. The vehicle consistently seems confused on what gear it is trying to shift into, then will lose all power and responsiveness for up to 30 seconds before finally placing itself in a gear and resuming normal operations. This happens almost every time we drive the vehicle now, searching for gears, delayed shifting, sometimes it will even catch when the engine is at a higher RPM and lunge forward. This has become a huge safety concern for my family, to the point where the Expedition is parked and only driven by me alone, if it HAS to be. I will not have my wife and family driving in this car until Ford does some sort of recall on this 10R80 transmission. The CDF Drum has a faulty drum sleeve that slides out of place and covers some of the holes the transmission fluid flows through causing a plethora of issues. If it wasn’t a known issue, Ford would not have created a TSB for the KNOWN issue.

My car loses power over 55 mph. It lost all power on the interstate almost causing a catastrophic accident. When shifting gears it has a very harsh shift. The transmission and shifts are very loud. The transmission has been repaired previously. Now at 4 years old, the transmission has failed and Ford is refusing to cover the cost of repairs.

May 3, 2024

Our car keeps losing power. Ford has replaced the differential, the transmission twice, and had the car between 4-6 months in the last 18 months. It is now in for its 8th repair. The car loses power while driving. It has done it so many times we have lost count. One of the alerts we get it "electronic limited slip differential reduce torque". Sometimes we can continue driving, sometimes we have to pull over and turn off and on the car. IT started fall/winter of 2022. The car is at ford again.

Already submitted 2 prior complaints regrading Transmission/Engine NHTSA ID 11583360. Vehicle transmission failure. Vehicle is at Ford Dealership for repairs. Safety risk involved risk of accident. Problem has been reproduced and confirmed by Ford service advisor. Vehicle is currently at dealership waiting on repairs to be made. It has been inspected by extended warranty advisors and approved for repair. Vehicle does give any warning when engine/transmission failure occurs. This has been documented since I bought the vehicle in Sept. 2022 with the dealership. This is the 3rd or 4th time it has gone into be checked finally when it happened and dealership was able to reproduce they stated that transmission needs to be rebuilt or new one needs to be installed. Since warranty did not want to cover new transmission they are going to rebuilt it. Before this instance they said it was because transmission failure due to having some sensor reset which did not work.

I had my 2020 Expedition looked at for transmission issues. Vehicle at times gets stuck and gears do not shift which causes vehicle to lose power both on the HWY and regular streets. I took into dealership on 3/20/24 they said they would have to get transmission module reset as this is a known issue with the expeditions. Well here I am 3 weeks later and vehicle is doing the same thing when I was driving down the street and attempted to switch lanes vehicle would not go into gear and sounded like something was breaking off of it. It has done this 3 times within the last 10 days. Vehicle at dealership now and tech is saying they can not reproduce issue so they can not fix. I told them I have done research on this issue and states that it could be selenoids. This is not something normal that should be happening to a 2020 expedition. Transmission issues were we can get injured from vehicle malfunctioning. I was stuck in the middle of an intersection when vehicle transmission malfunctioned on this occasion. other instance family was on the HWY their is no warning to when this is going to happen and speed is not a factor since it has happened on HWY and street driving.

Vehicle is slipping back into natural when driving. Vehicle losses power and won't move almost causing me to get hit from incoming traffic. It's a known problem with ford and should be responsible for the 7k cost for new transmission.. please investigate this. It's too early for a transmission a fault on a 2020.

Mar 20, 2024

I was driving on the highway and suddenly it felt like a hard shift and the vehicle was in what seemed to be neutral (I was pushing the gas, engine revving) but no forward motion. At 70 miles an hour in traffic, it was very dangerous. I have 70k miles so I would not expect problems of this nature. There was no warnings prior to this.

Mar 15, 2024

The transmission is skipping or jerking randomly. It has happened several times while driving on the expressway and when driving on the regular roads. It is concerning that this is happening more often which puts my and my family's lives at risk when we are driving at high speed on expressway and vehicle will jerk and gears get stuck which can cause me to get hit by another vehicle or semi truck. There is no warning that this is going to happen. I bought the truck in Sept 2021. It happened to me in May of 2022 and has been happening more often now. I took truck to dealership on 3/13/24 and service adviser just told me that they know this is common in the expeditions but that the transmission module needed to be reset. I asked if this covered under warranty since it is known issue and should not be happening to brand new vehicles. I also spoke to a friend who has a similar expedition and this has happened to them where their vehicle has left them stranded for transmission jerking all of a sudden. Ford needs to fix this issue. I should not have to pay for Ford to recaliberate the module to get the transmission to work properly. I also had them check my radio screen because it keeps going to a black screen and/or gets stuck on the rear camera not having access to anything on the screen. I was also told by advisor that they had to put a new module in it because again this is a known issue on the computer screen as well.

The car when accelerating feels like it misses a gear then re catches lurching the car. Also when engaging from park to drive, reverse or neutral the vehicle bucks forward. It has been brought to the dealership for a re learn and that only worked for a couple of days. Scheduled again for it to be looked at. There are no warning messages and the vehicle does this when accelerating at random or when letting off the gas then re engaging to drive. This can pose a huge risk when merging to traffic and day to day driving with my family.

Feb 16, 2024

The vehicle jerks back-and-forth while on the highway at random speeds, and at random times I have had the transmission rebuilt twice and they are still unable to replicate the issue. when I leave the dealership and drive it for a day, it starts doing it again, jerking and bucking at high speeds and at low speeds so it is very random.

Feb 10, 2024

When shifting from park to drive or reverse, the car slams into gear and jolts the entire vehicle, sever times while going up a steep driveway at a low speed it slips and grabs into gear, while driving into my home complex the speed is 25 MPH so if i have my foot on the gas no problem but when i coast and let my foot off the gas it will clunk super hard like it almost went into reverse or something because the jolt was that severe, same thing will happen when i accelerate onto the freeway and then let off the gas, I don't think this is SAFE at all, pretty scary to be honest. I have a 2020 Ford expedition.

It fails at highway and city speeds. No warning lights Pryor to failure.

There are 3 issues going on with my SUV. Each item has been identified or verified at my local dealership. My main issue is that the car occasionally will not go into the correct gear. This mostly happens when I haven't driven the car in a couple of days, and it's cold out. It also shifts hard for no reason. I was informed that there is some sort of transmission issue with my type suv. I never received a recall notice or anything. Second, my alarm goes off in the middle of the night randomly. The dealership said this was due to a faulty latch on the back of the car. They also said this was a newer issue that other customers have had. Last, my pre-collision assist will activate when there is nothing around to trigger it. This has happened one time so far.

Traveling on the highway I lost all acceleration, the gas pedal wasn’t functional and the vehicle begins to quickly decelerate, then it corrects itself and accelerates quickly. It has done this a few times already.

Transmission shifts from 3rd to 5th gear very hard and downshifts from 10th to 8th very hard also.

Feb 4, 2024

Frequent Hard shifting, especially going from 3-4 and 6-7 Frequent Clunking and hard shift from Park to Drive or Park to Reverse While traveling in the interstate at approximately 55-60mph, I had to accelerate hard to merge into traffic. After hitting the gas, the vehicle momentarily lost power, felt like it shifted to neutral as I could not accelerate despite hitting the gas. After a few seconds the transmission shifted back and I could accelerate, but it was as the transmission didn't knt what gear to be in and it continued to shift hard before eventually going back to "normal " Set up appointment with local Ford Dealership. They said that the vehicle didn't throw any codes so there was nothing they could do.

We have had continuing issue related to the 10R80 10 Speed transmission that Ford uses in the Expeditions (for us) along as in the F-150's, Explorers, and other vehicles. We had repair under warranty and now the issue is back doing the exact same issues as before. Multiple people that we know with this transmission also have shifting/hard engagement issues, have had work done, then the issues come back.

[XXX] on my way to pick up kids from school in Dallas and take them home. I was driving about 65 mph trying to accelerate to pass an 18 wheeler, to exit. As I press on the gas there was no acceleration. All l hear is motor revving as if I’m in neutral, it feels like it slipped the gears resulting in the inability to speed up. At this point, I’m in front of the 18 wheeler, which is coming up on me while I am unable to accelerate. I have to swerve to avoid him hitting me while nearly hitting the car next to me. Luckily, there wasn’t an accident. It remains this way for about 3 sec & then I take my foot off the gas & try accelerating again & it catches a gear and performs normally. I took it to the dealership & they kept my car for over a month did a complete overhaul on the transmission they said they repaired it & gave my car back. After a few days the same problem occurred. I took my car back & they did a 2nd overhaul on the transmission & gave me my car back. The same day I picked up my car after repairs the same problem happened. I’ve taken my car to a Ford dealership 6 times now for same issue. Currently my car is back at the same dealership & they’re trying to correct the issue. I drive 6 children all under 10 years old home from school every day & I have lost all confidence in my vehicle. I’m terrified when driving on overpasses, merging or trying to switch lanes, I never know when it will happen. As a result of my fear of this happening with the children, I try to avoid driving on highways at all with them, which is very difficult for picking them up. I filed a lemon law claim but don’t qualify. I have written letters to manufacturer, sent videos of dash when transmission failing so they could see the error codes & gauge’s but they can’t seem to fix it. Please help. When you rapidly accelerate the power train slips into neutral and you lose power and the engine revs. Let off accelerator and it reengages. The first time I got a warning “wrench” and error message in the Ford Pass app.The next several times no “wrench” or error message. Ford knows the problem exist. They have TSB 23-2249 out that list all covered year and models that the problem can exist on as well as repair instructions. This problem is a safety hazard if you are attempting to enter onto the interstate and you lose power.

I purchased this vehicle used, I started having transmission issues here and there and now it's more frequent. I travel from Houston tx to Katy Texas weekly and travel on I-10, the most dangerous road in Houston with my 9 year old daughter and 2 year old son. There have been several times where I was almost rear ended because the vehicle shifted gears and when I would push the accelerator the vehicle would do nothing and just glided. Yesterday traveling to Katy, it happened again but only this time the vehicle didn't shift back into gear for a longer period of time and again almost causing us to get rear ended. I have taken my vehicle to Ford only to tell me that they test drive it and nothing happened so they were not able to fix anything. I have read several complaints about this issue with the 10 speed transmission but nothing is being done about it. This is supposed to be a safe family vehicle on the road but instead it's a DEATH trap waiting to happen. Please, please, please look into Ford being held responsible for this issue that should be fixed. Thank you for your help.

Transmission slip in 4A and above gear 4 at speed..hesitation at speed accelerating inconsistent, clunking/jerking from park to reverse when parked. 22’s have lawsuit…don’t understand why 20’s aren’t included. Need recall

Oct 27, 2023

Routinely the vehicle shifts erratically, can't seem to find the right gear, and loses power. I am surprised that I have not been rear-ended yet as the vehicle loses power on busy roads and freeways.

Oct 26, 2023

Transmission has always been faulty in the vehicle. The vehicle constantly hesitates. We have had a number of incidents when turning the transmission hesitates and come close to getting hit. Car hesitates and slips when entering freeway and we almost get rear ended. Last week I was on the freeway and a semi started to come in my lane I attempted to floor it to avoid a collision and vehicle hesitated and did not take off. I had to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid the accident. I have notified Ford 5 times of the problems. Ford has attempted to fix the transmission 3 times and failed every time.

Oct 26, 2023

Transmission is awful hestiates and is going to cause serious accident. Latest incident occured on freeway semi started coming into my lane without seeing me and I floored it. Car hesitated I had to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid the accident. There have a number of occurneces over the 3 years we have owned the car where we have almost got hit because the car hesitates. My wife will not let our kids ride in the car because it is unsafe. Ford has attempted to fix the transmission 5 time and stil has not suceeded.

Hard shifts into gears, when accelerating to pass a vehicle vehicle stalls and loses all power even on interstate and will not accelerate until it gets down to 15-20MPH. Almost wrecked several times because of this as I went to pass another vehicle. Very very dangerous at highway speeds. No warning lights or anything came on

Sep 29, 2023

1. Power train (transmission) slips causing the vehicle to jerk. Issue is most noticeable when accelerating out of 3/4 gear to 5th and into 10th. Yes available. 2. The vehicle randomly without a noticeable pattern, and when stopped at a light, the engine would shutoff (which is designed with auto start stop) but when stepping on the gas pedal, would not start back up. It would need to be put in park and push start the motor. Additionally, when the vehicle is on an angle, even if the emergency break was set while the vehicle is in neutral and then out in park would shift violently when putting the transmission from park to drive or reverse. 3.multiple Ford dealers were contacted for support but the soonest appointment was 90 plus days out. When the vehicle was dropped off it sat for three days before a call to the manager helped a tech “look” at it. The fix was a so call update to the onboard computer. Vehicle still shifts hard when going into 5th and 10th and when moving from park into drive or reverse on any incline regardless, wether the emergency break is set or not. 4. No. 5. No on board signage, except the battery light when the issue happened with the engine shut off.

Sep 18, 2023

While underway on the interstate I pushed down on the accelarator to pass but instead the vehicle rpms went down and I lost power. The engine did not stall but the RPMs went to 500. A quick message saying something about shifting flashed and went away. I couldn't read the the message as I was avoiding an accident due to the loss of power. The transmission has done this to me three times.

My SUV had shudders and vibrations while making turns. I took it into a local Ford dealer and they couldn’t find the problem. They said they did an “engine relearn” and that I should drive it for one thousand miles to see if it gets better. I drive it to Kentucky from Wisconsin and back; the problem got worse. I took it back in to the same dealer and they then figured out that it was the front differential and it needed to be completely rebuilt and the cost would be $3200!

Aug 21, 2023

I have encountered this issue five times since owning the vehicle (purchased June 2020). When coming up on a slow vehicle, I prepare to change lanes and pass the car. When I accelerate too quickly, my truck/transmission shuts down completely like it just goes into neutral. I am unable to move, a warning light comes up in the dash with a picture of a wrench and then it’s like my transmission slams back into gear with a loud thump and grinding and then it runs normal. The dealer has looked at my vehicle when it first happened stating there were no codes and nothing that appeared to be wrong. We just returned from a trip down south and it happened 4 times during the trip. It only happens when you want to accelerate quickly and push the gas pedal down quickly. It’s like the transmission can’t handle that quick of a gear change and it just shuts down which is never good when you are on the thruway doing 75 mph.

Aug 14, 2023

The transmission will randomly shift from gear 10 speed to Neutral while driving on the highway then suddenly back to gear 1 before to go back into normal gear, this is so dangerous to lose any vehicle traction while driving at 70mph along other vehicles. Often the transmission will jump gears with a loud clunk and the car will jerk while this is happening, often during gear shift from gear 5 to 6, and sometimes a transmission back to neutral is experienced there too. I took this truck to many repair shop but no error code are registered when such event are occurring, although the issue is well known from Ford, as a customer bulletin was initiated on this topic, but this isn’t enough, this is a major safety risk and I fear each time I have to take my family on a ride.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions and the contact was informed that the vehicle was cleaned; however, the failure persisted. The contact demanded that the dealer repair the vehicle, and the running board motor was replaced. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked and hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The failure persisted and the engine overheated with black smoke coming from the vehicle. The powertrain wrench warning light illuminated with a message to check the Owner's Manual. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed back to the dealer, and it was determined that the torque converter needed to be repaired. The vehicle remained unrepaired at the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.

The transmission seems to be missing gears and shifting violently at weird times, completely losing transmission engagement and randomly shifting into neutral when acceleration pedal is engaged at a higher speed on the highway and then the vehicle will all of the sudden try to shift back into gear violently at moments of high speed acceleration. It has issues finding the gear sometimes completely disengaging into neutral and a crackling popcorn sound coming from front passenger side under the car. The headrest in the third row, driver side is permanently, flipped down and gaged into the back of the head of the passenger, possibly resulting in a life-threatening injury during an accident The information screenshot of vehicle in the front, which displays all of the apps, air, music, sometimes randomly is blank, black screen with no power

Aug 1, 2023

This mechanical failure was reported previously on this vehicle (4/2/2023). The vehicle was repaired. The mechanical failure occurred again on July 27, 2023. The vehicle is currently sitting at a dealership 460 miles from my residence. Driving at interstate speeds (75-80mph) the vehicle's accelerator essentially goes dead. The vehicle loses speed quickly and the engine/accelerator is completely non-responsive for a period of multiple seconds before it finally engages, revs, and downshifts very hard and accelerates. The vehicle is not safe to drive. I provided videos of prior incident and have videos to support this incident upon request.

Jul 28, 2023

While driving at highway speeds and attempting to pass a vehicle up an incline, transmission suddenly goes into neutral, engine rpm suddenly increases, all power is lost, vehicle rapidly looses speed, loud clunk is heard, vehicle slows down until the transmission reengages (gear shift indicators goes from 8 or 7 to 1 and then to 3,4,or5 depending on speed and the power is restored. Meanwhile vehicle being passed is in directly next to my vehicle and I’m forced to abort the passing maneuver. This has happened multiple times and on both highway and two lane roads. A head on collision while passing on a two lane road is a real possibility when this failure occurs. It has happened while approaching a yellow traffic light and making split second decision to accelerate thru the intersection being the best option. Losing power and being caught in the middle of the intersection at red will cause an accident This is a real potential deadly defect to which Ford has made no effort to correct.

Jul 25, 2023

Problems with my transmission since day 1. bought the vehicle with 7k+ miles it now has 39650, the transmission, was not shifting properly, found it was 2qts low. no difference, reprogram it, no difference. Was on highway went to pass, engine revved, car did nothing, except make a huge bang, where I thought something broke. New valve body, seemed to correct some of the issues. Another trip trans overheated 288 degrees and leaked fluid. Remedie new gasket and new pan. Another trip trans overheated 240 degrees Ford engineer says it ok to 275 degrees. Now pan is leaking fluid again and trans still running hot. There is something not right with this transmission...it still soes not shift well in lower gears and the overheating is shortening the lift of the transmission as well as spilling oil everywhere.

Jul 25, 2023

The transmission began to shift roughly which degraded over several weeks to loud bangs and a loss of power with associated warning messages/lamps. This put the vehicle in a sort of “limp mode” in which you would have to slow down and wait for the transmission to “reset”. This occurred multiple times on the interstate, in traffic with large trucks and traffic moving at interstate speeds. Options for getting safely off the roadway with a complete loss of power are hair raising at best, particularly with our four children on board. Vehicle has been to dealer three times with a “relearn” on the transmission performed twice which was supposed to reset the adaptive shift strategy. While initially better, after several weeks the issues began to occur again and the vehicle was brought back to the dealer with a repeat of the aforementioned process. Again, it was better for a while but after a few weeks the issues began again. The third time it was at the dealer they determined it was not safe to drive and that they would need to remove the transmission. For the past 3 weeks we have been waiting for it to be repaired. Dealer claims they have several of these 10 speed transmission issues in cue and Ford is now making them open the transmissions to determine the extent of the problem. It appears this is a well documented issue with this transmission to include TSBs and multiple law suits.

Jul 22, 2023

The vehicle has intermittently made a “clunk” sound on shifting in hard acceleration since I purchased it. I currently have 45k miles on it. However, twice it has has significant issues when I attempted to accelerate quickly. Once was to change lanes to get over to an express lane and the other was to pass. Both times my speed was in the mid 70’s and when I pressed the gas pedal to perform the maneuver the vehicle made a series of clunking notices like it could not shift into gear. When doing this I had no control over the gas pedal whatsoever and the car decelerated into the 40’s suddenly. Almost the equivalent of me braking hard. This occurred on major interstate highways at high speeds causing other vehicles having to swerve to avoid collision. The timeframe is less than a minute or two and then it finally shifts and you can accelerate again. Yes, I will let anyone inspect it. I have taken it to the dealer and they deny there is anything wrong. The last time the issue occurred it was witnessed by my daughter and we briefly saw an error “shift system fault ..”. It flashed briefly and was gone almost as fast as it appeared. But the dealer checked error codes and found nothing. There are many people online reporting the same issue and the same response from Ford. This is extremely dangerous and someone is going to get killed.

Shifting of the gears when going from 1 through 10. Hard shifts between 2-5. Skipping 2 and 5 gear sometimes. Will not shift smooth between 7-8 sometimes. Starting grinding for no reason. RPM's will shout up and not catch a gear. Engine temperature has been running at over 220+ and it grinds when its at 223+ degrees. Powertrain issues of no power. Have taken to 2 ford dealers. One said that they would have to get into transmission to find problem. Other one said that the it would need a new transmission, as it had metal in it. I do not have receipts in front of me right now but can get them if needed.

Jul 13, 2023

The transmission "clunks" and occasionally slips gears. Most recently we were on four lane road and I went to pass a vehicle that was driving slow. When I pressed the gas the engine revved up and RPMs went high, but the car Expedition did not accelerate. I immediately let off the gas and we all heard a loud noise and the whole car shook. My family was with me and they thought I ran over something in the road, but I didnt. It was just the transmission going in to gear. I have had the dealership look at the vehicle and they could not recreate it. They told me to bring it back when it happens again, not if it happens again. They also said it is a common issue with the 10-speed transmissions. When I look up 10 speed transmission issues with Ford vehicles, I can see that there are tons of issues out there and Ford is aware of the problem. There is even a class action lawsuit. This is a huge safety concern and I am worried about the safety of my family while driving this vehicle.

Jun 27, 2023

Twice I have gone to accelerate and have no power. It shoots the vehicle into a fault and creates a high rpm and feels like it’s missing gears or that it didn’t shift. Both times have been close to getting us killed. Just a matter of seconds of getting hit by a semi. The other time it did it when turning through a stop light with a car coming head on. I believe it has to do with the transmission, but they don’t find anything wrong with it when they do a diagnostic. My life matters and so does everyone else that is in a vehicle. Please issue a recall on the 2020 ford expeditions to help find out why this happens.

Jun 26, 2023

I have a 2020 Ford Expedition with 40,000 miles on it and a Transmission problem. The first year I got it I had a incident where I was driving around 65 MPH and it just slammed it down to 1st gear on the freeway and I lost power. I tooked to the shop and they couldnt find anything. This last week I had it happen 3 times on a trip to DC. I would just be cruising and it would slam out of gear or down to a low gear all of the sudden. One of these could have been really bad! I had my whole family of 8 people of 495 outside of DC 5 lanes of traffic and it slammed out of gear, I heard a rattle and and I loss all power for about 5 to 10 seconds almost being hit by a semi. Then finally it caught another gear. This was all at 70 MPH in 5 lanes of heavy traffic! I am now afraid of traffic, high speeds, passing or merging. They say nothing can be found!! This is a lie! The same year Ford F150s with the same motor and transmission have a massive recall because they are doing the excact same thing with their 10 speed transmission!!. So much so that they cant get it back in to look at it again till September at the dealer because their Transmission guy is so busy. Please help before people get killed. I have read multiple people online saying they are having the same problem with their Expedition 10 speed transmissions

Jun 26, 2023

On an express way on multiple occasions when I’ve tried to accelerate, the transmission disengaged completely. I was moving in traffic going 70-85 mph with no power to accelerate or maintain speed until the rpm hit 1000 and speed dropped below 45mph. Other times when going from park to drive or reverse the car will “clunk” and jerk like i was driving a stick shift and missed the mesh point to get into gear.

Jun 7, 2023 Fire

Transmission slams into gear, lacks power, has put itself into park at 55mph. Was replaced by Ford and 1,400 miles later it blew up. 2.5 hours into a 9 hour road trip the transmission started leaking and hitting the exhaust pipe and caused the fluid to flare as it hit the hot exhaust. Vehicle filled with caustic smoke and odor. Put my family (with small children) in a very dangerous situation on interstate 64 on the side of Afton Mountain. Out of the 6 months I have owned this vehicle it has been at the Ford dealership 4.5 months while they try to figure it out. Spoke to Ford Corporate the next business day and they put in a request for the Ford Buy Back as it has been in the shop so many times for the same issue.

May 8, 2023

Transmission jerks the whole car very hard when going from park to drive. Transmissions try’s to downshift when going 50, then shift up. More hard jerking/shifting when going shifting under 40-60 mph. Transmission seems defective

May 2, 2023

At approximately 35,000 miles we started noticing a harsh shift. We have taken the vehicle into the Ford Dealership 3 times and they have made repairs each time (overhauled main control valve body replacing the separator plate and channel plate, replaced the torque converter, replaced a broken seal inside C-clutch, replaced main valve body, flushed transmission cooler and lines). Each time the vehicle appears fine, but the harsh shift returns, typically within a couple thousand miles. The harsh shifting occurs when it shifts into 5th gear. At one point the vehicle stopped all forward movement and left me and my daughter blocking lanes of traffic at a very busy intersection - putting ourselves and other motorists in danger. Each time we take the vehicle in, the dealership test drives the vehicle and confirms the harsh shifting. One of the dealer techs stated they've had a lot of problems with the Ford 10 speed transmission. The transmission shifts start out fairly mild, but then get more intense pretty quickly. The harsh shifts have made loud clunking noises, caused the vehicle to lunge or shudder during shifts, and have almost felt like we were struck by something. On a roadtrip the transmission actually shifted hard enough that it woke my wife up who was in a deep sleep.

Bought this car new at a dealer. Slips, Jerks, delays accelerating. Getting on the highway it slipped into nuetral, very dangerous and scary. I’ve had it to two different dealers four different times since then. Lots of wait time in between and no loaner vehicles ( they are saying due to Covid). It started with gears 5,7,8. Now it’s all gears. I’m at 35k miles. I have 60k miles on extended warranty. This is a lemon. I don’t know what to do? I’ve called Ford customer service as well.

Apr 16, 2023

Anytime my SUV downshifts from a higher rate of speed, goes into reverse or shifts while going up a hill - the transmission makes an audible thunk noise, jerks the car, then proceeds to shift. It’s been in the shop 4 times and the problem hasn’t been solved. From nothing is wrong, to the “system update” to replacing gears, it’s in AGAIN. This has been on ongoing problem for 6+ months with no remedy.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving between 30-40 MPH, the vehicle unexpectedly downshifted. The contact stated that during the failure, a thud was felt and heard as if the vehicle had been involved in a collision. The contact stated that during one failure, the "shift system error, service required" warning message had appeared on the instrument panel. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where a mechanic informed him that the CDF sleeve might have spun inside the transmission casing. The mechanic asked the contact for permission to tear down the transmission to confirm the failure; however, the contact declined the service. The manufacturer was then notified of the failure and transferred him to the NHTSA Hotline. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

Cruising on the interstate and the vehicle’s throttle went dead. Vehicle acted as though I let of the accelerator and began to coast. Would not respond to accelerator (rpms went flat and no downshift). This happened approximately 10 times in a row for 5 to 10 seconds each time. I took a quick video of the instrument panel at the end, prior to me pulling off the interstate. Wrench light appeared at the end. My wife has found multiple reports of similar issues on the web. Our vehicle has been to the dealership 4 times already due to similar drive train issues (hard shifting, going forward when put in reverse, etc.). Ford has failed to fix these issues, which are commonly known to Ford.

Mar 22, 2023

Was on a 7hr road trip. Around 2hrs in attempted to accelerate to pass another vehicle using a passing lane which terminated back down to a single lane. Created an unsafe situation while passing other vehicles at 45-55 mph. Only 20-25k miles on our 2020 expedition. Transmission did not shift appropriately. Lost power and began roughly shifting between gears especially 6th to 7th gear. Warning lights and wrench appeared during/after this event. No engine or wrench lights on prior to this event. Appeared to get stuck In 10th gear and only accelerating to 45-55mph. Would randomly down shift and have rough shifting back up to 10th gear, especially 6-7th gear. Took the vehicle to the nearest Ford dealership. Stated it was transmission communication errors due to how the computer learns driving patterns. The Ford service center cleared the communication errors and disconnected the battery. Gear wrench disappeared and did not occur again for the rest of the trip. Two days later had similar acceleration issue and rough shifting but no warning, engine or wrench lights.

Mar 13, 2023

I was traveling on the interstate at a rate of 75 mph. I signaled a lane change and pressed the gas pedal. I heard the engine respond and the rpm surged. The drive train went dead. There was no power at all. I checked it was in drive and it was. The car began to slow and I began trying to get off the road. Suddenly with a bit of a jerk, it drove normal.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle, followed by hard shifting from the transmission. The contact stated that the “Service Required” message was displayed. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway. The vehicle was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic found no failure with the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer again and the dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced, and that the manufacturer was aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 20,000.

While traveling approximately 65 MPH on State Highway 35 near Austin, TX, my Expedition violently shifted out of gear when I attempted to accelerate to move into the next lane out of the way of a commercial 18 wheeler that was changing lanes. This caused me to lose power and coast until I could recover drive ability. My family and I were sitting ducks in the middle lane of a 4-5 lane stretch of highway. I was able to get off the highway and park in the nearest parking lot. I remember seeing a red notification stating something like “No Shift” on the dashboard display when the issue happened. Immediately confirmed no other issues, transmission and cooling system temperatures were in normal range and no other check or warning lights came on. Also, did not see any leaks and all fluids were within normal ranges.

Mar 5, 2023

I recently purchased this vehicle and I have had the problem from the beginning. When driving and slowing down. Usually around 5th gear or slower, it will shift hard into the lower gear with an obvious noise(thunk) coming from the rear of the vehicle. You can also slightly feel this. I have tried to duplicate the issue without using brakes to rule that out and I have done so. It is definitely not a brake issue but a transmission/power train issue. This happens to me multiple times a day on most every drive. I have looked at multiple forums to see if this is a common issue and it seems that it is. A common issue without a reliable fix. I am hoping that of multiple people claim this issue that Ford will in fact take it seriously and fix the issue

Feb 18, 2023

While driving on the interstate and accelerating the vehicle first shifts very hard then goes into complete limp mode, I have had to coast to a stop on the side of the interstate to restart the engine and pray it starts working again. Once it happens once it consistently happens daily till I have it repaired which ford is booking appointments for transmissions 3 months out. The manufacturer has been able to replicate the failure multiple times. Each time it happens the onboard screen flashes to see owners manual and the check engine light comes on. This has put my entire family at risk because it usually happens at 55+mph and going from that amount of speed to no engine/transmission power is terrifying. I have spoke with other owners and this is a consistent problem these machines re having.

Feb 18, 2023

My transmission shifts very hard while driving. Mainly from 4th to 5th gear while going 50MPH on a decline. The car has been in the shop for it a couple times and have yet to “replicate” the issue or repair it. The blind monitor system keeps saying it’s having an issue responding to the transmission. I get notified on my app constantly, yet the dealership has told me they can’t replicate it therefore no repairs have been made.

Feb 11, 2023

There's two different incidents oke happened at approximately 30,800 transmission made a hard clunk around 30 mph, transmission error on dash appeared but cleared as soon as I came to a stop. Transmission started working but shifting differently as in Harder shifts but not all the time. Last week on. February 4th wife stated she felt a hard shift and thought transmission dropped/broke I know ford will say can not replicate symptoms so I am reporting this incase more issues arise from ford expeditions as this can be a safety issue for family's with children or as in our case we foster and are always taking kids to where they need to be

The transmission in the car is not functioning properly. Shifting is not happening correctly and there is slippage. The shift between gears is significantly impacting the car while in motion. The lurch between gears skips the car ahead. Further, Ford Dealers are so backlogged with transmission issues that they are refusing to diagnose and service vehicles due to lack of technicians and parts.

I own the 2020 Expedition. I pressed down on the gas pedal to accelerate into traffic. While the truck should have down shifted and accelerated, instead the powertrain completely disengaged; a total loss of power. The RPM jumped way up to redline, I took my foot of the gas pedal and as the RPM came back down, the transmission slammed back into engagement. At this point, I was finally able to accelerate. This issue has put us in danger as when I am on the road and try to accelerate to my vehicle does go into gear acts if it's in neutral. Also I have been at stop light and light turns green cars are honking as my car won't move. I have had this issue for quite some time, I called for they took it in for inspection the first time and found no issue, took it in again and they said it was the Cadillac converter, they replaced it, and they reprogramed the vehicles gears and now I am expirenceing the same issues, but worst. 2020 Ford Expedition

There seems to be an issue with the 10 speed gear shift in my 2020 Ford Expedition. We were driving on the interstate when we attempted to slow down to shift lanes, the gear shift very harshly and then would not respond to pressing the acceleration pedal. It made some very loud clunk noises and after a few minutes, it finally responded to the acceleration but it also was skipping gears and shifting really hard. Upon research, I found out that older models have an issue with the 10 speed shifter as well as others with my same make/model/year. Will bringing my vehicle in for inspection since this can be very dangerous in busy highways.

Dec 17, 2022

The transmission has now had over 5 shifting stall and power loss events while on the highway when attempting to downshift when accelerating. This loss of power causes a drastic reduction in speed and delay in actions. These events have nearly cause accidents at highway speeds. Additionally the radar sensor for the collision avoidance system went out and the car now shifts harshly in any gear with jerking and clanking. Multiple service lights are now illuminated. This first happened around 20k miles, but is has been increasing in frequency and now the car is not safe or driveable. This is the same transmission that is affecting other ford cars, like the ford 150 which has been subject to recalls. From publicly available information Ford thinks it’s a shifter and transmission disconnect but has not been able to implement a fox.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at 10-20 MPH a week after purchasing the vehicle brand new, the vehicle started jerking. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact continued driving. However, the failure recurred while driving the entire day. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was normal as she had just started driving vehicle. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice where it was diagnosed that no issues were found. Additionally, the contact stated that there was steam coming through the AC vents. The contact also stated that the check engine warning light illuminated, indicating that the catalytic converter was damaged. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery needed to be replaced. However, after the battery replacement, the vehicle shut off while driving and coming to a complete stop. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. However, the failure reoccurred while driving in the highway. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and veered to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the vehicle was lacking unknown computer chips. Additionally, the dealer diagnosed that the transmission, the AC coil and the catalytic converter had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was unknown.

Automatic transmission making abrupt and lurching gear changes (even coming out of Park) in addition to mechanical sounds. Safety has not been an issue, so far. The situation has not been inspected by dealer or any other mechanic. Vehicle still under warranty with less than 8,000 miles. No warning messages have surfaced. Never involved in crash or flooding.

I own the above listed 2020 Expedition. We were traveling on Interstate 287 yesterday. I was in the right lane and was stuck behind a slow moving semi truck. I put on my blinker and waited for an opening in traffic to move into the middle lane. When an opening presented itself I pressed down on the gas pedal to accelerate into traffic. While the truck should have down shifted and accelerated, instead the powertrain completely disengaged; a total loss of power. The rpm jumped way up to redline, over revving, but the truck was slowing down. I took my foot of the gas pedal and as the rpm came back down the transmission slammed back into engagement with a loud audible clunk that jolted the whole vehicle. At this point I was finally able to accelerate. While this was all happening I had just moved into the middle lane of traffic, which was bearing down on us. All the vehicles behind us wear slamming their brakes and honking their horns. I thought for sure we were going to die. Thank God it wasn't an 80,000 lbs Peterbilt bearing down on us or we would be dead, by the grace of God we're not. Upon returning home I went onto the Ford truck owners website I belonged to. I came to learn this is a known issue with Ford's 10 speed transmission that Ford has failed to address. That there are pending lawsuits and that the NHTSA is aware of the issue. One of the member suggested that I file a complaint with the NHTSA, that was my impetus for writing you today. This is a dangerous condition that Ford needs to remedy. Thank you in advance for your time and attention in this matter

When accellerating in 5th, or6th gear trans slips out hard and car wont accelerate for 1 to 2 seconds. It displays being in 1st while this happens before it goes back into precious gear and starts driving.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle started to decelerate independently. The contact stated the error system failure warning light was illuminated. The contact also started to hear an abnormal noise. The contact stated after a few seconds the failure independently stopped and he was able to continue driving to his destination. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing an unknown TBS to be completed. The vehicle was serviced for the bulletin but continued to experience the failure. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

Can be driving on freeway at 70 mph and all of sudden vehicle stalls or transmission begins to slip or stall. Make this grinding clinking sound.all lights on dash light up. Nearly caused a crash . Vehicle jerks and jumps back into gear and then takes off again. Will also do this at even 35 mph too. This has happened numerous times. We have taken it in to Ford and they can’t find anything wrong with it

Jun 15, 2022

At 70+ MPH the automatic transmission made a loud clinking sound, lost acceleration/power for approximant 5-8 sec, and the "wrench" and other lights on the cluster board lite up with every light flashing on the interstate in a passing lane, and heavy traffic all around. This same incident occurred just 2 days later at approx 35 mph. It was erratic, disorienting and very distracting. The sudden change in behavior of the vehicle could have caused me to lose control of the vehicle at speed on a the interstate and could easily resulted in an accident causing major injury and damage. This issue has occurred approximately 8 time in the last year starting at approx 22K miles. The dealer says the car has no fault codes and they have download "updates" to the software. One time the dealer had a code of "Stuck in park". That did not resolve the issues. To date they have no explanation for why the vehicle behaved in this manner. Honestly, i am very reluctant to drive this vehicle. I am at a loss on where to go with this issue.

At least 5 different times while driving I go to push the accelerator and the gear seems to slip and an awful sound like gears grinding is heard. I always feel like my transmission is going to fall out from under the car. It prohibits the car from moving and I have almost been hit from behind because I cannot accelerate at the time. It has happened on the freeway, in town driving, and even accelerating up my driveway. I have taken it to a Ford dealership but no answers.

Transmission is slipping very bad. Really shifts hard between gears, especially from 4th to 5th gear. Went to pass a vehicle, on acceleration the transmission slipped and the engine rpm's went very high. I let off the accelerator and the gear caught. I thought the transmission was done at that time.

Feb 7, 2022

While driving the Vehicle in 4A and sometimes 2 WD at 75MPH it shifts into neutral and you have to pull over and slow down to 50 MPH to get it to go back into gear. I have another vehicle just like it and the same problem exists and Ford dealer says they can't find anything. This is definitely a Safety Issue as it occurs mostly on the Interstate.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH the "Power Train malfunction" warning light illuminated on the instrument panel as the vehicle went into LIMP mode. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail to accelerate when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the first time the failure occurred she pulled over had the vehicle was towed to an unknown Ford dealer as she was out of town. The contact stated that she was unaware of the diagnostic test result or repair. The contact stated that the failure had occurred multiple times. However, on the most recent failure after picking the vehicle up from the dealer the vehicle failed to stop when the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle rolled into the parking lot next to the dealer and the contact had to turn the ignition off to stop the vehicle. The dealer was contacted immediately, and the vehicle was towed back to the dealer. The vehicle was currently at the dealer waiting for the diagnostic test and repair. The contact stated that the dealer contacted the Ford engineers and was awaiting guidance on how to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that she had requested the manufacturer buy back the vehicle twice and was denied. The contact stated that the manufacturer advised her to contact NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

The contact's husband owns a 2020 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at 65-70 MPH on cruise control, the vehicle inadvertently downshifted, skipped a gear, and lurched forward several times. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle would skip from 3rd gear to 5th gear whenever she would depress the accelerator pedal. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, upon picking up the vehicle from the dealer and driving home, the accelerator pedal was depressed but the vehicle inadvertently decelerated instead. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact also stated that the RPM of the vehicle was jumping between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM. The contact continued to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who test drove the vehicle but was unable to diagnose it. The dealer reset the adaptive learning of the vehicle; however, the failure persisted, and the vehicle would make abnormal clunking sounds while shifting into drive. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that they could not duplicate the failure. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred increasingly and significantly while driving. Additionally, the driver’s side rear brake had an abnormally strong burning odor. The vehicle was taken to Lebanon Ford (770 Columbus Ave, Lebanon, OH 45036) who was unable to duplicate the failure. The dealer notified the manufacturer of the failure. The manufacturer's field technician advised the dealer to replace the brake light sensors. The contact stated that the brake light sensors were replaced; however, upon picking up the vehicle, the start button was depressed but the vehicle failed to start. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a buy back. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 7,400.

At 70+ MPH the automatic transmission tried to drop into 1st gear while on the interstate in a passing lane with heavy traffic all around. It had a loud and physical clunk then began to lose power. It was erratic, disorienting and distracting. The sudden change in behavior of the vehicle could have caused me to lose control of the vehicle at speed on a federal interstate and could easily resulted in an accident causing major injury and damage. The dealer says the car has no fault codes and they have download "updates" to the software. To date they have no explanation for why the vehicle behaved in this manner. This is the second time I have taken the vehicle in for odd transmission behavior. I have a video of the dashboard during the event showing the speed, RPM, mileage and the gear selector gauge when the transmission attempted several times to shift from higher gears to the 1st gear. I shared the video with the dealer. The video I have was taken with a iPhone. It would not up load to your site. I can make it available. This is dangerous with no answers!
