TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SHIFT INTO GEAR AND ACCELERATED INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED SEVERAL TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 176,000.

WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL COMMANDED CONSIDERABLY MORE THROTTLE ON AN INTERSTATE AT 60MPH, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY TOOK OFF AT VERY HIGH SPEED (85+MPH AND ACCELERATING WHEN I FINALLY SHUT THE IGNITION OFF). I ATTEMPTED TO DISCONNECT THE CRUISE CONTROL VIA OFF SWITCH AND USING THE BRAKES TO NO AVAIL. I SHUT THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF AND COASTED TO THE SHOULDER SAFELY. ATTEMPTED A RE-START, AND THE ENGINE APPEARED TO START AT FULL THROTTLE. I RAISED THE HOOD AND FOUND THE THROTTLE CABLE RETAINING HAD BROKEN, AND THE CABLE ASSEMBLY HAD BEEN PUSHED OUT OF ITS BRACKET BY THE CRUISE CONTROL SERVO'S FORCE. ONCE OUT OF ITS BRACKET AND PUSHED TO NEARLY FULL THROTTLE, THE THROTTLE RETURN SPRING HAD HOOKED ON THE BRACKET (SEE ATTACHED IMAGE), PREVENTING A RETURN TO IDLE FROM NEARLY FULL THROTTLE. THE PLASTIC RETAINING TABS ON THE THROTTLE CABLE HAD EVIDENTLY BEEN BROKEN BY THE LONG-TIME FORCE OF THE CRUISE CONTROL, POSSIBLY AGGRIVATED BY YEARS HEAT FROM THE ENGINE. THIS IS A DANGEROUS DESIGN, DEPENDING ON TINY PLASTIC TABS AS THE ONLY BLOCK TO SUCH SUDDEN, UNCOMMANDED VEHICLE ACCELERATION. THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT DEFECTIVE, BUT HAD INSTIGATED THE CONDITION MY BREAKING THE THROTTLE CABLE RETAINING TABS OVER TIME. THE ATTACHED PHOTO SHOWS THE DISPLACED THROTTLE CABLE, WITH THE SPRING HOOKED ON THE BRACKET, HOLDING THE THROTTLE NEARLY FULL THROTTLE. THIS COULD EASILY HAVE RESULTED IN A HIGH SPEED CRASH. AS A RETIRED AIR FORCE FIGHTER PILOT AND AIRLINE CAPTAIN, I REMAINED CALM AND WORKED THE PROBLEM STEP BY STEP TO A SAFE CONCLUSION, BUT A LESS DISCIPLINED DRIVER IN DIFFERENT TRAFFIC COULD HAVE LED TO A DIFFERENT AND TRAGIC CONCLUSION. A SECOND PHOTO SHOWS THE CABLE END MISSING THE RETAINING TABS. A THIRD SHOWS THE TINY PLASTIC TABS ON A NEW CABLE.

2000 FORD EXPLORER WENT UP IN FLAMES. REPORTED IT RIGHT AWAY TO FORD AND WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER. THEY TOLD US TO TAKE IT TO A FORD DEALER IN THE AREA. AFTER MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS OF GETTING NO RESPONSE WE KEPT GETTING THE RUN AROUND THEN TOLD THAT IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY DEFECT. WE RECENTLY GOT A RECALL LETTER FROM FORD FOR THE EXACT THING THAT HAPPENED TO THIS CAR CAUSING IT TO GO ON FIRE AND FORD WILL NOT RESPOND. I CAME HOME FROM DROPPING MY SON OFF AT HIS SCHOOL SOCIAL. I HEARD SOME SPARKING NOISE. UNPLUGGED MY CELL PHONE CHARGER. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS AT FIRST. 1 MINUTE LATER I SAW SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM MY HOOD. I JUMPED OUT THE CAR AND CALLED FIRE DEPARTMENT. GUYS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD PUT FIRE OUT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 60 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 90 MPH ERRONEOUSLY. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASED EXCESSIVELY. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT DECELERATE AND THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL IN ORDER TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF AS THE FAILURE OCCURRED, CAUSING THE STEERING WHEEL TO SEIZE. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. AS THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE TO EXIT THE DEALER, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT'S INSURANCE COMPANY WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. ON MONDAY MY FUTURE SON-IN-LAW WAS DRIVING MY FORD EXPLORER AND EXPERIENCED THE CRUISE CONTROL REFUSING TO DISENGAGE WHILE TRAVELING AT 70 MPH. HE TRIED TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL BY BRAKING AND BY TURNING IT OFF. NEITHER WORKED. HE TRIED TO SHIFT IT INTO NEUTRAL ONLY TO HAVE THE ENGINE REV TO HIGH RPM, SO HE PUT IT BACK IN GEAR AND FORCED TO CAR TO STOP USING THE BRAKES FIGHTING THE ENGINE. PROBABLY RUINING THE BRAKES IN THE PROCESS. I RECENTLY HAD MY VEHICLE SERVICED AS RELATING TO A RECALL CONCERNING THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH. HE IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE PARTS WOULD BE UNAVAILABLE UNTIL DECEMBER OF 2007. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT HE DID NOT HAVE TO HAVE HIS CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH DEACTIVATED. SINCE THAT TIME, THE CONTACT HAS CALLED THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND THEY CONTINUE TO STATE THAT THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. A RECALL WAS ISSUED IN AUGUST 2007 FOR THE SPEED (CRUISE) CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH (RECALL 05S28). IT IS NOW APRIL 2008 AND I HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED FOR THE REPLACEMENT PART. FORD STATED IN THEIR LETTER THAT THEIR "COMMITMENT, TOGETHER WITH FORD AND LINCOLN MERCURY DEALERS, IS TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SERVICE AND SUPPORT." I THINK THAT AFTER 8 MONTHS, A "REASONABLE TIME" HAS BEEN EXCEEDED. IT HAS BECOME FRUSTRATING AND EXPENSIVE HAVING TO WAIT THIS LONG FOR A SIMPLE FIX. FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAS DISPLAYED A FAILURE TO "PROVIDE ME WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SERVICE AND SUPPORT." WHAT HAS HAPPENED IS, THAT FORD MOTOR CO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ON APRIL 8, 2008 AND THEY STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHT AND GLOBE WIRING WERE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES. THE COST OF THE REPAIR IS $800. ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER, THE DEALER INFORMED THEM THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT UNDER THE HOOD; THEREFORE, THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE. IN JANUARY 2008 I TOOK MY 2000 FORD EXPLORER TO COURTESY FORD, IN ALTOONA, PA TO HAVE THE RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE NECESSARY PARTS, SO THEY ORDERED THEM AND DISCONNECTED MY CRUISE CONTROL TO MAKE THE CAR SAFE TO DRIVE. ON FEBRUARY 26, I CALLED AND WAS TOLD MY PART HAD ARRIVED. WHEN I TOOK IT IN, THEY DISCOVERED THAT ONLY ONE OF TWO REQUIRED PARTS HAD ARRIVED, AND THEY COULD NOT REPAIR MY CRUISE CONTROL. I LEFT ON A BUSINESS TRIP THE FOLLOWING DAY. I WAS TO RETURN ON MARCH 7, 2008 AND MY GIRLFRIEND AND THREE DAUGHTERS WERE DRIVING TO THE AIRPORT TO PICK ME UP. ABOUT 40 OR 50 MILES INTO THE TRIP SHE NOTICED THE CAR WAS LOSING POWER BECAUSE IT WAS NOT PULLING UP A HILL WELL AND THE ENGINE BEGAN RUNNING ROUGHLY. SHE PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AT THIS POINT, THE EXPLORER HAD A LITTLE BIT OF SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. SHE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WAITED A MOMENT, THEN SAW THE SMOKE GETTING WORSE. SHE AND MY DAUGHTERS GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND SHE CALLED 911 FOR HELP. OH I DID INCLUDED THE RECALL LETTER IN TRUCK! AND THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS A COPY ALSO. PLUS I HAD TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE WHICH I COULD NOT AFFORD! SINCE I AM ON DISABILITY AND EVERYTHING IT IS HARD TO MAKE PAYMENTS. I WAS LETTING EVERYONE KNOW THEY REALLY NEED TO GET THE SPEED CONTROL FIXED ASAP! REPORTED SAME ISSUE TO THE NHTSA ON FEB 1, 2005...ON JANUARY 12, 2007, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING OUR EXPLORER TO WORK. HE ACCIDENTALLY BUMPED THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE CAR BEGAN ACCELERATING RAPIDLY. HE WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT INCIDENT AND TURN THE VEHICLE OFF, BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO START IT UP AGAIN, THE BATTERY WAS DRAINED. A FRIEND OF OURS CAME AND GAVE HIM A JUMP START, THE CAR TURNED ON BUT THE ENGINE WAS REVVING AND HE COULDN'T GET IT TO STOP. THEY CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC AND THEY FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE WAS STUCK INTERNALLY WHICH WAS CAUSING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO STICK AND MADE THE CAR ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN. THEY DISCONNECTED THE CABLE FROM THE THROTTLE BODY TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. DRIVER OF 2000 FORD EXPLORER VIN [XXX] WAS DRIVING ON I90 E IN MA AND SET SPEED CONTROL. UPON PRESSING SET/ACCEL BUTTON TO INCREASE BY 1-2 MPH, VEHICLE THROTTLE POSITION STUCK IN ACCELERATING MODE BRINGING THE VEHICLE TO APPROXIMATELY 85 MPH BEFORE BRAKING AND DOWNSHIFTING WAS ABLE TO DECELERATE SPEED. ONLY UNDER EXCESSIVE BRAKING FORCE ON PEDAL WAS VEHICLE ABLE TO BE BROUGHT TO UNDER 50 MPH, AT WHICH TIME THE VEHICLE TRANSMISSION WAS PUT INTO PARK JUST TO STOP. DRIVER THEN CALLED 911 AND HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO LOCAL SHOP. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REPRODUCE THIS ISSUE IN CONTROLLED CONDITIONS. THE THROTTLE IS FIXED IN ITS SPEED CONTROL POSITION (THIS CAN BE SET TO MAINTAIN SPEED OR FIXED IN ACCELERATE MODE). BRAKING SHUTS OFF THE SPEED CONTROL LIGHT BUT DOES NOT DISENGAGE THE THROTTLE. ONCE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL AND STOPPED THE THROTTLE CAN BE MANUALLY RELEASED BY HAND AND IT SNAPS BACK TO IDLE POSITION. INVESTIGATION HAS REVEALED THAT THIS VEHICLE HAD BEEN RECALLED BY FORD UNDER 03S03 (NHTSA 03V280000) FOR A SPEED CONTROL CABLE REPLACEMENT. IT IS APPARENT THIS THIS PART FAILURE HAS OCCURRED AGAIN TO THIS VEHICLE. FURTHER INVESTIGATION WILL TAKE PLACE TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE CABLE IN THE VEHICLE IS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT OR A REPLACEMENT PART. I HAVE A 2000 XLT EXPLORER, ALL WHEEL DRIVE, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND IT HAS HAD THIS PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT IT USED 3 YEARS AGO. I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN ABOUT 4 OR 5 TIMES SINCE PURCHASE AND HAVE REPORTED IT TO THE DEALER WHO SAYS THERE IS NO INFO ON THIS FROM FORD AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. FOR ME, THE STUCK THROTTLE HAS ONLY HAPPENED IN REVERSE AS I AM BACKING UP. THE THROTTLE WILL GO TO FULL THROTTLE BY ITSELF CAUSING THE CAR TO QUICKLY ACCELERATE. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP IT IS TO FIRMLY HIT THE BRAKES WITH ALL MY MIGHT, SHIFT THE GEAR INTO PARK OR SHUT OFF THE CAR. THE VEHICLE WOULD CRANK AND THEN IMMEDIATELY DIE. IN ORDER TO KEEP IT RUNNING YOU WOULD HAVE TO INCREASE THE RPMS TO ABOVE 1500. AFTER EXPLAINING THE SITUATION THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT HE WAS 99% SURE IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC IDLE CONTROLLER BECAUSE HE HAD REPLACED SEVERAL OF THEM ON EXPLORERS WHICH CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DANGEROUS SITUATION IF YOU ARE NOT AWARE OF HOW TO OVER COME THE SITUATION IN A TIME OF CRISIS. I BELIEVE THAT FORD HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM HERE THAT NEEDS TO BE INVESTGATED BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJUED OR POSSIBLE KILLED.
