I was leaving the store pulled out on a main road in town about to head on the highway. My steering wheel locked and would hardly move with all my strength and the help of my significant other we pulled back into the store parking lot rarely missing hitting several vehicles in the process. I had my children with me at the time in this vehicle as well. The power steering assist fault message popped up. I had the vehicle towed to Ford Groves and after a diagnostic test was ran I was told it was my steering gear and the entire steering column needed to be replaced. The second opinion I got said it was the rack and pinion needing to be replaced. After doing research I found other reports of other 2013 ford explorer owners having wrecks due to this some with the same edition as myself (limited). There are recalls for the steering on 2013 ford explorer but not the limited. I need my edition to be added because this is clearly happening here as well. This was very dangerous when I explained to the dealership about the recalls they told me this was not accurate and was the wrong information. This was random and happened out of no where my vehicle was fine prior to this. Yes the vehicle is available upon request for inspection

The manufacturer was contacted, who assisted with a claim. The failure mileage was approximately 250,000.

Recently, I experienced a catastrophic water pump failure that has resulted in extensive damage to my vehicle’s, a 2013 Ford Explorer equipped with a cyclone engine, engine and turbocharger Details of the Incident According to Ford of Englewood, NJ, the water pump failure in my Explorer caused coolant to seep into the oil pan, mixing with other fluids. This has resulted in the need for a complete replacement of both the engine and turbocharger, at an estimated cost of $15000. See diagnostics attached. I recently discovered there have been several class action lawsuits launched regarding this exact problem. The vehicle is currently with the service department at Ford of Englewood. As mentioned above it has been diagnosed as premature water pump failure resulting in catastrophic engine damage. Luckily this issue presented its self at engine turnover, however had the failure occurred at speed on the highway the results could have been extremely dangerous indeed, not just to myself but to other unsuspecting road users. MOST concerning is that NO warning lamps or warning gauges were activated until well after the exhausts started spewing thick white smoke, and then only the check light flicked on but went off again after a few minutes. At which time i IMMEDIATELY contacted Ford of Englewood to book a diagnostic. As I non mechanically minded consumer I could never of guessed the extent of the damage.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the driver’s and passenger’s side exterior A-pillar around the front windshield was detaching. The contact placed the A-pillars back in position. The contact stated that water was leaking into the vehicle. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V031000 (Structure); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact called two other local dealers, Premier Ford of Bay Ridge (612 86th St, Brooklyn, NY 11228) and Crown Ford Inc Service (420 Merrick Rd, Lynbrook, NY 11563) but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer confirmed reimbursement would not be provided if the repairs were completed by an independent mechanic. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

The heat in my 2013 Ford Explorer won't work. The Rad fan isn't working so any antifreeze I put in is gone after 1 trip to the store. It's burning it. The sunroof has never opened fully, it wobbles. The electrical is shot on it. There are so many safety issues with this vehicle and I see I'm not the only one but yet I search my Vin and there are no recalls that's not right

The engine water pump started leaking heavily (as discovered later) and the engine overheated in traffic. Since the water pump is located inside the engine, i have bee quoted an astronomical repair estimate of at lease $2,500 (including the parts) just to fix the water pump!! That is completely insane and apparently a design flaw, in my opinion, that I think the manufacturer should be responsible for.

After doing so her and her husband we inside, heard a rumbling sound went outside and car was on fire. The neighbors say they saw the car just catch on fire in her driveway. She had purchased the car less than 60 days ago in Manhattan, ks from CSM AUTO.

Unknown what caused the issue but our vehicle erupted into flames in our driveway not 10 minutes after we pulled in. No warnings, no indication anything was wrong. We smelled smoke and went outside to find the hood completely engulfed. It took fire department to extinguish it. They’re not certain of cause yet but said likely an electrical short

My water pump started leaking coolant. My reservoir leaks out from night until morning being parked. Engine has always been maintained and it seems to be a faulty part. I saw where Ford had to replace a big number of faulty water pumps by recall and lawsuits. Mine never has been took in for a recall. Please help with this or do you think I need to call my attorney?

I’d first like to say whoever designed this water pump seriously needs a new job. I brought my car into the shop a year ago for an AC replacement, where it was brought to my attention that there was a small water pump leak. I couldn’t afford to have it fixed and was told to keep coolant in it until I can have it fixed. I was quoted $3000 to fix it, WHILE at an event at a local ford dealership I was putting coolant in my car when a lady with the EXACT same car next to me said she just had to pay $3000 to have hers fixed the week before. This is apparently an issue that goes refuses to acknowledge or replace for their customers. $3000 for a family with 4 kids is very hard to save up, so again I just kept up with my coolant. Going down the interstate last week my engine locked up, with my wife and 4 kids in the car. The water/coolant mixed with the engine oil because of where it’s placed. $5000 fix to replace the entire motor with a used engine. We are not under warranty and our lives were at stake because of a faulty water pump that is being IGNORED by ford. Not only are we now out of a car, but we have to figure out how to come up with $5000 to fix a major problem because of fords terrible placement of a faulty water pump. Avoid these cars at all costs and don’t hold your breath to get any help from them pertaining to something that should’ve been recalled by now!

Driving down the street to my house at 25mph. Suddenly there was a ticking sound coming from under the hood. I pulled into my driveway shutoff the vehicle and looked under the hood. The engine had not overheated, it hadn’t even revealed a maintenance code. I checked the oil and noticed that the color was not as dark as it should be and seemed like there was a lot of air bubbles in the oil. I allowed the vehicle to cool down an hour drained the oil and it was the consistency of chocolate milk, and coolant leaking. Took it to a Ford dealership, they say the engine is a total loss due to water pump failure even though it wasn’t run or driven any Significant distance after the water pump failed. There are no safety recalls, there was no warning, and now I’m left with only purchasing another engine or vehicle. Numerous other have reported similar experiences. This is the result of faulty design and Ford should be held accountable.

The power steering system has an intermittent electric connection and the steering wheel will jerk in opposite directions. There is a recall for the issue with similar year ford explorers but for has told me to contact nhtsa to see if this vehicle can be added to the list for the same issues. Also I am not able to smog it due to bad catalytic converters.

My explorer has 120000 miles and water pump started going bad. Bought parts to get it fixed. $80 for pump, $300 for timing chain kit due to it being a stupid internal chain driven pump. $1200 labor to break motor down just to change an $80 part. Less than 28 days, was pulling out of driveway. Went about 50 feet and Chain breaks locking motor up ruining motor due antifreeze leaking into motor from where internal water pump was going bad Originally. Now have to pay additional $3000 for a new motor due to internal pump. Please help. An internal water pump is the most stupid idea they ever came up with. Too many critical parts were tied in to this part. Would’ve been easier for it to be external with a serpentine belt driving it. Fire whoever came up with this stupid and very expensive idea.

a Ford Dealership informed me my water pump was severely leaking and needed to be replaced. The water pump is located inside the engine, which is EXTREMELY costly to repair. After digging into it I realized that this is common in this type of engine but Ford has not issued a recall in the US, but Canada has a recall. Now we have to come out of pocket to fix this issue when it is well know to Ford that this water pump inside the engine is a massive design and mechanical flaw.

My car was showing oil engine replace message, it was not performing as usual, when taken for normal service at ford dealer to change oil, they identified cooling liquid leaking inside the engine as it seems in the ford explorer and other models the water pump is inside the engine which makes identifying any leakage very challenging as it is not easily visible.the faulty water pump leaks liquid inside the engine which overheats and damages the engines and lead to car failure when driving it. Since leakage is not easy to detect the faulty water pump and bad design(by putting the water pump inside the engine) may lead to engine failure when driving the car and accidents leading to life threatening situation. When seaerching on the net it seems several ford explorer 2013 owners faced same issues and were not able to identify the leakage easily and had engine damage and had to pay a lot of money to fix it. Ford should recall and change the pumps on its own cost.

Water pump failure, this part has been recalled on most Ford explorers but not mine and I’m unsure why. My water pump has failed and is causing additional damage to hoses and the engine due to overheating. My vehicle overheated on the interstate and was completely drained of water. I had to pay a $400 tow bill and walk over 10 miles home. The water pump started working again and then once again stopped working. This has caused a lot of problems to my safety and well-being, not to mention I have lost my job due to being late for work multiple times due to not having a reliable form of transportation. A quick Internet search has showed me this is a very common issue for my vehicle and I believe Ford should be held responsible for the faulty part.

The sunroof motor burned out due to water intrusion from clogged drains. Water also pooled in the passenger side floorboard and soaked the carpet from faulty drains. Cracks in the manufacturer's seam sealer at welds cracked at the back tailgate and leaked all down into the carpet and floorboard below the cargo area. This is a huge issue for those of us to are extremely sensitive to mold and mildew. It can also cause severe corrosion to other components of the car. I have reported it to the company and the dealer and they say that it is not their issue. In fact, they accused me of trying to weld or caulk the cracks. The vehicle has been inspected by Ford mechanics. There were no warnings of any kind. I discovered the burnt sunroof motor due to the sunroof not closing. Had to scramble to find someone to remedy the problem. I've investigated these issues and there are several customers with these exact same problems on Ford vehicles from 2011 - 2019. There should be several recalls concerning these issues.

As the Millions of Americans get screwed over because we have to now pay Minimum $2K to have it repaired. Canada has them as a recall, why not USA ? Absolutely Ridiculous on FORD to get away with this.

Ford website expects water pump to last 150K miles. Had to have vehicle towed to repair shop. Estimate around $3k to repair. Read on Ford forums of many folks having similar experience. Why no recall on these issues?

As stated in the 2 of the articles in this year make and model range 2013-2018 Ford explorer. The car has been up to date with maintenance, after a couple thousand miles after the oil changed was. I then took the car to a mechanic shop and was told the water pump and thermostat were failing. I stopped driving the car and decided to take it to a ford dealer. After visiting Palmetto Ford in Miami. I was told the car did not have an open recall for this vin and they did not cover it. It is evident that the problem has been present in many ford explorers in this year and has been a safety concern since the car overheats while on the road. I will need to have a recall placed on my vin number so that i can take this to a ford dealer and get it resolved asap so that i can get back to my normal living as I do not have a transportation and happen to be losing time from work and spending money in rides. While driving, the vehicle will drop out of drive, the engine will run roughly, the engine will not respond to accelerator pedal inputs. The service engine light will illuminate. If I coast to the side of the road, turn off the vehicle, then restart it, it runs normally as if nothing has gone wrong. The first four times this happened, no codes were set in the computer. This occurs at varying speeds and varying conditions. The last two times it occured, I had already driven the vehicle for 2 hours on the highway (70-75 mph). Once I left the highway, I drove for another 50-60 miles and then the issue recurred. Finally today, the vehicle set a P2111 code, which indicates an issue with the throttle actuator system. This is a dangerous situation. Each time it happend I was in traffic, sometimes heavy. Luckily I was able to quickly pull off safely and no crash occured, but a collision certainly could have happened.

Unknown, heater started blowing cold air, and realized was low on coolant. Filled up coolant but noticed was leaking coolant when came home from work and parked car. Cannot locate leak as of yet but seems to be leaking from water pump as it is not a hose issue that I can feel or see. From research, it seems like Ford has had several complaints and failures with the water pump but no recall. If this part is continuing to fail, why has it not been recalled? This presents danger to the engine, car, and families in it. The pump is also located inside the engine making repairs with labor come around 2-4K. This should be covered by Ford due to failure rates reported and poor design choices made by Ford.

I was driving down the road and my engine overheat alarm light went off. Tried replacing the thermostat and this did not help the situation. Then noticed coolant fluid leaking. Tried replacing the coolant fluid and it was coming out as fast as I was putting it in. My safety was put at risk due to this occuring while I was driving down the road with no warning. I carry my children in the car. I was able to slowly get my car back to my house and I had a mechanic come out and take a look and was told it was my water pump that had failed.

While on the highway July 2021 a red warning light flashes, I didn’t get to see exactly what it said, it went away. Shortly after that I stopped at a Walmart service location off the highway, but by then the light wasn’t on and the mechanic said “they don’t do anything regarding engines”. Then about a week later it flashed again then I was ready and able to take a picture (attachment #1) it said “engine coolant over temperature”. I called several repair shops and dealerships and had gotten a few estimates (attachment #2). One place added a lot of coolant (Grease Monkey) and that seem to get me going and I didn’t see the light again until about 3 to 4 weeks later. Then my husband and I had to start checking my coolant level daily to see if more coolant had to be added which most times it did. The high cost for repair - is in getting to the water pump - which I’m being told by at least 4 people can take 11 to 12 hours of labor. One repair place said “I may be better off by getting rid of the SUV”. I previously had a 2003 Ford Explorer (original owner) kept it for 10 years then upgraded to a 2013 Ford Explorer (original owner) and thought I could do the same, however costly problems started in 2021. Ford is aware of all of the water pump related issues and should have a recall and/or make repairs free of charge. This has been apparently going on for 10+/- years. In October 2021 once while on a rural highway in Colorado about 30 minutes from home my car ran hot and stalled on me and my son who is disabled and cannot walk. We putt putted over to a restaurant lot, had to let the car cool down to then add water. After that we almost made it home before the light came on again, we were about 3 minutes from home. That was very scary to be driving in traffic and your car stalls. My car has been sitting for the last 4 months because of the cost for needed repairs.

FOUR 2013 FORD EXPLORER RAN HOT WHILE I WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE. WE THOUGHT IT WAS LOW ON ANTIFREEZE SO WE ADDED SOME. OUT OF PRECAUTION, WE BEGAN MONITORING THE ANTIFREEZE LEVEL AND NOTICE THAT THE LEVEL WOULD DROP, OVER A COUPLE OF WEEKS, ENOUGH WHICH REQUIRED US TO HAVE TO ADD MORE ANTIFREEZE. MY WIFE CALLED FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO DETERMINE/CONFIRM THE PROBLEM. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE WATER PUMP WAS MAY BE DEFECTIVE. ON OUR WAY TO THE APPOINTMENT, THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN AND HAD TO BE TOWED THE REST OF THE WAY. UPON INSPECTION, WE WERE TOLD THAT ANTIFREEZE HAD LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE, AND FURTHER, THE ENGINE WAS DAMAGED BECAUSE OF A BROKEN TIMING CHAIN.

THE DEALERSHIP HAS MADE ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE LEAK BUT AS OF TODAY IT'S STILL DOING IT. I HAVE HAD THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANED TWICE AND IT CONTINUES TO FAIL, LEAVING OUR CAR IN A "LIMP-HOME MODE" IN DANGEROUS ROAD CONDITIONS. IT USUALLY STALLS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A LOW IDLE POSITION, SUCH AS SITTING AT A STOPLIGHT AND THEN ACCELERATING. HOWEVER, IT HAD ALSO STALLED WHILE TRAVELING HIGHER SPEEDS AND THEN ACCELERATING. ONCE I PULL OFF THE ROAD, THE CAR ENGINE SHAKES VIOLENTLY UNTIL I'M ABLE TO PUT IN PARK AND THEN TURN THE IGNITION OFF. AFTER A FEW SECONDS THE ENGINE WILL USUALLY RESTART AT NORMAL IDLE AND PROPER ENGINE FUNCTION IS RESTORED UNTIL THE NEXT THROTTLE BODY FAILURE.

VEHICLE EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT ENGINE SHUT OFF UNDER ALL DRIVING CONDITONS WHICH EXHIBITS A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THE VEHICLE ABRUBTLY LOSES TOTAL POWER WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAS RECENTLY BEEN AN ISSUE IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS WHILE MY WIFE AND KIDS WERE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 70 MPH IN TRAFFIC. VEHICLE STARTED BACK UP ONCE THE IGNITION WAS TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES TO START THE VEHICLE BACK UP. THIS SCENARIO OCCURRED ON THE FREEWAY, IN TOWN DRIVING AND WHILE STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. CONTACTED LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND ALL THEY SAID WAS TO BRING IT IN. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK IT OUT AND HE WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE ANY ENGINE CODES WHILE RUNNING AN ECU SCAN. THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS NOTED ONLINE WITH OTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNERS WHO HAVE ATTRIBUTED IT TO A "TERRAIN MANAGEMENT" FAULT. THIS IS THE SAME DIAGNOSIS MY LOCAL MECHANIC CAME UP WITH. THIS RESULTS IN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE TO RECEIVE A THROTTLE POSITION IN THE WIDE OPEN INDICATION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING OPERATED IN OAHU, HAWAII. I AM CURRENTLY DEPLOYED TO THE MIDDLE EAST SO I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHILE THIS IS THE ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO THEM.

IN SUMMER 2015 WE BEGAN SMELLING EXHAUST IN THE VEHICLE WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ON. IT STARTED OUT AS A MILD SMELL AND CONTINUED TO GET WORSE OVER TIME. WE MENTIONED IT TO OUR SERVICE ADVISOR MULTIPLE TIMES WHO COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. AFTER MANY ATTEMPTS, WE GOT THE DEALERSHIP TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE AND ADMIT THERE WAS AN ISSUE BUT UNFORTUNATELY THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. AS TIME WENT ON, THE SMELL WAS PRESENT ALL THE TIME WHETHER OR NOT THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS ON. IN EARLY 2018, WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO PERFORM THE FORD AUTHORIZED FIX FOR THIS KNOWN ISSUE (SEALING HOLES, REPROGRAM THE A/C, ETC.). HOWEVER, THE SMELL NEVER WENT AWAY AND WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK TWICE TO HAVE IT VERIFIED. THIS LAST TIME THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD WAS CRACKED AND THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT FORD WOULD DO AND THAT WE HAD TO PAY FOR A REPLACEMENT. MY WIFE AND I TOOK A TRIP FOR A BABY SHOWER, IT WAS ABOUT A 2.5 HR DRIVE. ON THE WAY THERE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON. THERE WERE NO OTHER WARNINGS OR INDICATIONS OF AN ISSUE. WE MADE IT FINE TO OUR DESTINATION, DROVE AROUND TOWN A LITTLE BIT, AND STAYED THE NIGHT. THE NEXT DAY WE HEADED HOME (ANOTHER 2.5 HR TRIP). THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON THE ENTIRE TIME, BUT THERE WERE NO ABNORMAL NOISES OR ODORS, OR ANY OTHER INDICATION THAT THERE WAS AN ISSUE. WHEN WE GOT HOME, WE PARKED THE CAR, TURNED IT OFF, UNLOADED, THEN TURNED IT ON TO BACK IT INTO THE GARAGE AND TURN IT OFF AGAIN. AFTER SITTING IN THE GARAGE FOR 10 -15 MINUTES, THE CAR EXPLODED, SHAKING THE HOUSE AND CATCHING THE ENGINE BAY ON FIRE. THE ENGINE BAY WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES, CAUSING FIRE/SMOKE DAMAGE TO OUR GARAGE AND EVERYTHING IN IT. AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR STATED THAT THE COOLING FAN HAD FAILED, WHICH CAUSED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, HOWEVER THAT SEEMS LIKE NOT A SUFFICIENT REASON TO WHY THE ENGINE EXPLODED. WE ARE UNSURE WHAT THE ROOT CAUSE WAS, BUT SOMETHING HAD TO HAVE GONE VERY WRONG FOR THE CAR TO EXPLODE IN THE GARAGE, IGNITION OFF, AND STATIONARY AND THE ONLY INDICATION BEING A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT EVEN IF THE COOLING FAN DID FAIL. THIS ALL HAPPENED JUST OVER A WEEK AFTER AN OIL CHANGE AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION THAT COULD HAVE VERY LIKELY ENDED UP IN INJURY OR DEATH.

I DRIVE A LOT FOR WORK AND AM BEING CONSTANTLY EXPOSED TO THESE FUMES. MY WIFE AND I ALSO HAVE A 1 YEAR OLD THAT WE REFUSE TO PLACE IN THIS CAR BECAUSE EVEN LOW LEVELS ARE MORE DANGEROUS TO HIM. THE READINGS OCCUR WHILE DRIVING AND ACCELERATING, ALSO WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ON RECIRCULATE. I'VE NOTICED THAT I GET HIGH READINGS OF CARBON MONOXIDE LEVELS AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE OR EVEN JUST CHECKING THE VEHICLE PERIODICALLY THROUGHOUT THE DAY. AFTER GETTING INTO MY CAR FOR LUNCH, THE CAR WAS EVEN TURNED OFF AND I HAD A READING OF 43PPM ON MY MONITOR (WHICH I LEAVE IN THE CAR). THIS TELLS ME THAT TOXIC FUMES ARE LEAKING FROM THE EXHAUST INTO THE CABIN, EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS OFF, AND STAYING IN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THINGS HAVE BEEN SEALED OFF DUE TO FORD'S "ATTEMPTS" AT FIXING THIS ISSUE. FORD EXPLORER, NOT JUST ME, CAN'T AFFORD TO PUT OUR HEALTH AT RISK WHILE FORD DENIES THERE'S A PROBLEM. CONSIDERING THAT CO IS ODORLESS, YOU DON'T NEED TO BE ABLE TO SMELL THE EXHAUST FUMES FOR CARBON MONOXIDE TO BE PRESENT IN GREAT AMOUNTS FOR ENCLOSED SPACES. FOLLOWING THIS DISCOVERY I FOUND FLOOR BOARDS SOAKED IN WATER, WATER DRIPPING DOWN MY 3RD ROW SEAT BELT ONTO THE FLOOR BOARDS AND INTO THE SPARE TIRE WELL. FOLLOWING THIS MY MOONROOF QUIT WORKING. THEN I RECEIVED A LETTER REGARDING EMISSIONS ENTERING THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE AND CAUSING PEOPLE TO PASS OUT AND WRECK THEIR VEHICLES. TOOK THE CAR TO FORD AND THE FORD DEALERSHIP WON'T COVER THE CRACKS IN THE NON WRECKED VEHICLE UNDER THE EMISSIONS WARRANTY BECAUSE THEY STATE THEY ARE UNRELATED. IF WATER IS GETTING INTO THE BACK OF THE CAR THROUGH A CRACK THEN EMISSIONS PROBABLY ARE TOO.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING WITH EITHER THE AIR CONDITIONER OR HEAT ACTIVATED, THE ODOR OF CARBON MONOXIDE ENTERED THE CABIN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONDITION WAS WORSE WHILE IN RECIRCULATION MODE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (HAYFORD FORD, 1330 301ST AVE NE, ISANTI, MN, 55040) WHO STATED THAT THEY COULD REPAIR THE VEHICLE PER TSB: 16-0165, BUT IT WOULD BE AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE COST OF THE REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A TSB, BUT NO OPEN RECALL AND OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000.

I HAVE HAD USAA INSPECT IT AND THEY SAID IT LOOKS LIKE "SOMEONE DROVE IT WHERE THERE WAS HIGH SULFUR PRESENT"---NEAR WATER OR ETC. THE SECOND ISSUE IS WITH THE ENGINE. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS OUR VEHICLE HAS FAILED TO TURN OVER AT THE FIRST START. WILL SIT THERE AND MAKE NOISES LIKE IT IS TRYING BUT FAIL AND TURN OFF. ONE INSTANCE HAPPENED WHILE WE WERE DRIVING ON A STREET ROAD. CAR HAD TROUBLE STARTING AND THEN SHUT OFF RANDOMLY. WE HAVE CONTACTED USAA AND TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP BUT THEY CANNOT SEEM TO HELP RESOLVE EITHER ISSUES. THIS MAKE/MODEL/YEAR HAS A KNOWN FACTORY DEFECT THAT CAUSED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD TO BLOW EXHAUST DIRECTLY INTO THE CABIN. I HAD TO FORCE THE DEALER TO FIX THIS, AS THEY ARGUED EXHAUST IS NOT DANGEROUS. I HAVE ATTACHED THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO FIX THIS, FROM THE FACTORY, PROVING IT WAS A KNOWN SERIOUS ISSUE, NOT DISCLOSED TO ME. THE DEALERSHIP DID A HORRIBLE JOB IN THE "REPAIR" - HAVING BROKEN OTHER PARTS OF THE CAR IN THE PROCESS. AFTER THEY "REPAIRED" THE CAR, IT BEGAN RANDOMLY SHUDDERING, WHILE IDLING. I HAVE ATTACHED A VIDEO OF IT. YOU WILL NEED TO TURN UP THE VOLUME TO THE MAX, AS YOUTUBE COMPRESSED THE SOUND TERRIBLY. I HAVE ONE WITNESS TO THIS HAPPENING TWICE. I'VE NOTICED THIS SMELL EVERY TIME I TURNED MY CAR ON/OFF OR WOULD GET FINISHED DRIVING. IT WOULD BE IN THE DRIVERS CABIN DOWN AT THE FLOOR WHERE IT CAME FROM. I FIRST NOTICED IT THERE AND HAD MENTIONED IT TO FORD WHEN THERE FOR SERVICE. IT SMELLS LIKE A NATURAL GAS ( LIKE AT HOME ) LEAK. I'D SMELL IT IF HE AIR OR HEAT WAS ON BRINGING IT INTO THE CABIN. THE SAME SMELL WOULD BE PRESENT WHEN I STOPPED DRIVING AND WOULD OP N THE DOOR. SMELLED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL AREA. IT PERSISTED FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. I'VE TOLD FORD MANY TIMES BUT THEY SAY THERE'S NO RECALL. OR THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF ITS MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. AT THE TIME IN 2014, WHEN I REALLY TOOK NOTICE, MY CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I BOUGHT MY CAR OUT OF ITS LEASE IN 6 OR7/2016 AND THERE WERE REPORTS OF EXHAUST ISSUES WITH PEOPLE HAVING A SMELL ON THE CABIN. IRONIC THAT I'VE BEEN COMPLAINING OF THIS TWO YEARS PRIOR TO IT COMING OUT IN THE NEWS. WHEN ASKED, I WAS UNSURE TO BUY A CAR WITH EXHAUST ISSUES, THEY REASSURED ME THERE WERE NO ACTIVE RECALLS. AND THAT THE EXHAUST WASN'T A PROBLEM. I THOUGHT I HAD ROADKILL ROTTING UNDER MY CAR, BUT AFTER NUMEROUS UNDER CARRIAGE CAR WASHES AND THEEE YEARS LATER, THE CAR STILL HAS THAT NATURAL GAS SMELL.

THEY WERE REPLACED AND IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE CORRECTED ANY OTHER ISSUE.

WE FINALLY GOT IT TO FIRESTONE AND THEY SAID THERE'S TAPPING AND KNOCKING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE. THEY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT NOW THE TRUCK NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. THEY QUOTED ME A ROUGH ESTIMATE OF $10,000. WE'VE KEPT UP WITH ALL THE OIL CHANGES ALONG WITH HAVING THE A/C COMPRESSOR REPLACED BECAUSE IT WENT OUT AS WELL. THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL ONLY REPLACE THE ENGINE WITH A USED OR REMANUFACTURED ENGINE FOR $3700. THERE IS NO WAY A 2013 FORD EXPLORER WITH LESS THAN 120,000 MILES NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. AND WE ALSO SMELLED EXHAUST FUMES THROUGH THE VENTS INSIDE THE VEHICLE.

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE CAR STALLED AFTER DE-ACCELERATING TO A STOPPED POSITION AND MADE A "CLUNK" SOUND FROM THE TRANSMISSION AREA. DURING THE FIRST EVENT AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, A VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD THAT SOUNDED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS RE-STARTED AND SEEMED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED BUT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. DURING THE SECOND EVENT AT A STOP SIGN, ANOTHER VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR AND THE CAR ACTUALLY SHIFTED SO THAT IT WAS FELT BY THE BODY. AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR THIS TIME AND PLACING IT INTO DRIVE, THIS TIME THE CAR DID NOT MOVE WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. INSTEAD, ONLY THE ENGINE REVVED UP. IN ADDITION, WHEN PUTTING THE GEAR INTO THE REVERSE OR DRIVE POSITION, THAT LOUD "CLUNK" SOUND AND THE PHYSICAL SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE ALSO HAPPENED. BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD LITERALLY NOT GO, WE CALLED FOR A TOW-TRUCK AND TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. AT THE DEALERSHIP, A CUSTOMER CARE REP AND A TECHNICIAN CAME OUTSIDE TO LOOK AT THE CAR. WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND DRIVE, THE SAME "CLUNK" AND SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE WAS OBSERVED AND ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH MEN. HOWEVER, AT THIS POINT THE CAR WOULD MOVE FORWARD WHEN APPLYING THE GAS. WE LEFT THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION. WHEN FOLLOWING UP EARLY THE NEXT WEEK, ,WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY HAD DRIVEN THE CAR ABOUT 100 MILES OVER THE COURSE OF THREE TRIPS AND THE CAR WAS RUNNING NORMALLY. ALSO, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC/EVALUATION OF THE PCM AND TRANSMISSION DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING WAS WRONG. DOMINGUEZ "THERE WAS NOTHING MORE THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS CAUSED THE VEHICLE'S DESIGN, THE ANGLE AND HEIGHT IT STANDS FROM THE ROAD AND THE VACUUM THAT CAUSED WHEN THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED". I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH LYMPHOMA - CANCER A YEAR AND A MONTH AFTER I PURCHASED MY 2013 FORD EXPLORER. WE HAD TO ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN TO KEEP IT AIRED OUT. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY FORD DEALER WHEN I RETURNED FROM THE TRIP,THEY SAID THERE IS NO PROBLEM. I AM NOT GOING TO ARGUE WITH FORD OVER THIS,I HAVE PURCHASED A CARBON MONOXIDE METER WHICH I KEEP IN THE CAR AND HAVE RECORDED CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE CABIN AS HIGH AS 15 PPM DURING ACCELERATION. UNTIL THIS LAST WEEKEND, WE OWNED A 2013 FORD EXPLORER. WE NOTICED AN EXHAUST SMELL IN THE CABIN SOON AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS JUST "NEW ENGINE SMELL." ON TRIPS ACCELERATING UP MOUNTAINS THE EXHAUST SMELL IN THE CABIN HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY BAD. IN FACT, MY 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS COMPLAINED OF A STOMACH ACHE AND THE NEED TO THROW UP EVERY TIME WE ARE IN THIS VEHICLE ON AN EXTENDED TRIP. WE CHALKED IT UP TO HER HAVING MOTION SICKNESS AND EVEN STARTED GIVING HER DRAMAMINE (WHICH NEVER HELPED). WHEN WE RENTED CARS FOR TRIPS, SHE DIDN'T HAVE THE SICK FEELING. MY HUSBAND WAS GETTING HEADACHES IN THIS VEHICLE, AND I WOULD ALWAYS FEEL EXTREMELY SLEEPY AND ALSO GET HEADACHES. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TO CHECK OUT THE CAR. THEY SAID THERE WAS A TECHNICAL BULLETIN OUT FOR THE ISSUE AND THEY KNEW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT. THE DAY WE GOT IT BACK FROM THE DEALER AFTER THEY "FIXED IT", WE ACCELERATED HARD ON THE FREEWAY AND THE SMELL WAS STILL THERE, AND ACTUALLY EVEN WORSE. WE ROLLED ALL THE WINDOWS DOWN AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT AND TRADED IT IN. I AM LIVID. FORD HAS KNOWINGLY ENDANGERED MY FAMILY FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT WE HAVE OWNED THE CAR. AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE ISSUE AND REALIZING THAT FORD WAS NOT LIKELY TO FIX THE PROBLEM, WE DECIDED WE COULDN'T RISK OUR FAMILY'S HEALTH BY KEEPING THIS CAR. I BROUGHT MY EXPLORER INTO THE FORD DEALERSHIP ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. THE DEALERSHIP VERIFIED MY COMPLAINT AND PERFORMED FORD'S TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 12-12-4. THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I CONTINUED TO SMELL EXHAUST INSIDE THE CAR. THE DEALER ASSURED ME THERE WAS NO SAFETY CONCERN, AND THAT THERE WAS NO CARBON MONOXIDE GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE. CONTACTED FORD AND THEY HAVE CONFIRMED IT AND THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND WHERE IT IS COMING FROM AND REFUSED TO FIX IT. THERE IS A FOUL SMELL IN THE VEHICLE, MAYBE BURNING PLASTIC ON THE VEHICLE OR EXHAUST. THE FUMES GETS INSIDE THE VEHICLE THAT CAN MAKE IT UNBEARABLE WHEN YOU HAVE THE AC ON. THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THAT THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS SPUTTERING AND RUNNING ROUGHLY. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT, IT RAN REALLY ROUGH AND JUST DIED. EXHAUST ENTERS THE VEHICLE CABIN ANY TIME THE ENGINE IS OPERATED AT HIGHER RPMS, SUCH AS CLIMBING A LONG HILL OR TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND PASSING OTHER TRAFFIC. WE SHORTLY DISCOVERED THAT THE EXHAUST ODOR OCCURRED WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF ANY OTHER TRAFFIC. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALER WHO CONTACTED FORD ENGINEERING FOR A FIX. THE "FIX" DIDN'T HELP. I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ESTABLISHED A "CASE" IN AUGUST, 2013, AND WAS PROMISED THE PROBLEM WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF. FORD TOLD US TO OPERATE THE VENTILATION SYSTEM IN THE RECIRCULATION MODE UNTIL THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. THIS ONLY AMPLIFIED THE ODOR BECAUSE THE EXHAUST STILL ENTERED BUT WAS THEN TRAPPED IN THE CABIN. AT FORD'S DIRECTION THE CAR WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT SAT FOR 3 WEEKS BUT WAS NOT TOUCHED. THE DEALER THEN CALLED AND ASKED US TO COME GET THE CAR BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. AFTER CALL I PROCEEDED TO GET BACK ON INTERSTATE, WHILE MERGING BACK ONTO INTERSTATE I ACCELERATED HARD TO ATTAIN MERGING SPEED, WHEN I MERGED SAFELY IN FRONT OF SEMI THE ENGINE SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND LOST POWER. TO AVOID BEING HIT, I JERKED VEHICLE INTO EMERGENCY LANE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLASHING AND THE CAR PLACED IN LIMP MODE. I TURNED THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY OF AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND EVERY THING APPEARED TO HAVE RETURNED TO NORMAL. I LATER READ THAT NIGHT THAT THE F150 WITH SAME ENGINE WAS HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FORD THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. THE SERVICE ADVISOR INFORMED ME THAT FORD HAS BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY ENGINE THAT IS IN THE FORD F150 IN HUMID AREAS. HE STATED THAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF CONDENSATION FORMS IN THE INTERCOOLER WHEN DRIVING FOR LONG PERIODS WITHOUT UTILIZING TURBO, THEN NEXT TIME YOU ACCELERATE HARD THE TURBOS SUCK ALL THE CONDENSATION INTO THE ENGINE CAUSING A MISFIRE AND PUTS ENGINE INTO LIMP MODE. AFTER A WEEK OF THEM CONTACTING FORD ENGINEERS AND RUNNING TEST, THEY TOLD ME THEY CANNOT REPEAT PROBLEM AND THE ENGINE DID NOT STORE ANY CODES IN THE ECM FROM THE PROBLEM. FORD ALSO TOLD THE DEALER THAT I'M THE ONLY PERSON WITH A 2013 EXPLORER WITH THE 3.5 ECOBOOST ENGINE THAT HAS EVER REPORTED PROBLEM. SINCE THEN I HAVE READ ABOUT TWO LAWSUITS WHICH HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST FORD INVOLVING THE ECOBOOST ENGINE AND INCLUDED THE 2013 FORD EXPLORER SPORT. APPARENTLY THIS STATEMENT IS NOT TRUE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7,500.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE INTAKE HOSE FROM THE TURBO CHARGER HAD BECOME DISCONNECTED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 399.

I DROVE MY RECENTLY ACQUIRED AND NEW FORD EXPLORER SPORT FOR FIRST TIME ON THE HIGHWAY ON MARCH 4, 2013. WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS A TRUCK, I LOST CONTROL OF FRONT END TO POINT OF SWIRLING AND NEAR COLLISION WITH THE TRUCK. I DON'T CONSIDER THIS A FLUKE AS SAME HAPPENED A WHILE LATER DURING SAME HIGHWAY TRIP. I'M VERY FAMILIAR WITH HIGH HORSEPOWER PASSENGER VEHICLES AND SPORTS CARS FOR THAT MATTER. I AM ALSO VERY FAMILIAR WITH HIGHER AND ALLOWABLE SPEEDS HAVING DRIVEN AND HANDLED SPORT CARS AND PASSENGER VEHICLES ON GERMAN AUTOBAHNS WHILE LIVING IN EUROPE. IT IS MY EXPERIENCE AND BELIEF THAT THE COMBINATION OF CHARACTERISTICS (WEIGHT BALANCING IN COMBINATION WITH SIGNIFICANT HORSEPOWER, POSSIBLY LARGE TIRE SIZE, TRACTION AND FOUR WHEEL/FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ASPECTS, THRUST ETC.) MAKE THIS VEHICLE, THE FORD EXPLORER SPORT, EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON HIGHWAY WHILE ACCELERATING AT ALLOWABLE SPEEDS. A LOCAL DEALERSHIPS' EXPERT (READ: DEALER IS AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR) IN INDIANA CONFIRMED MY OBSERVATIONS AND BELIEFS AND USED TERM "SQUIRLYNESS" TO DESCRIBE VEHICLES' HANDLING WHEN ACCELERATING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. FORD INDICATES THAT VEHICLE OPERATES AS DESIGNED, I CONTENT THE DESIGN IS BAD, CAUSING THIS FORD EXPLORER SPORT VERSION TO BE VERY DANGEROUS. IN MY MIND IT IS ENTIRELY FORESEEABLE THAT ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN TO UNSUSPECTING DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE BASED ON THE VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO BY FORD DUE TO PRE-EMPTIVE LIABILITY ASSUMPTION IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS. I OFFERED FORD TO TAKE THIS NEW VEHICLE BACK. I JUST BOUGHT A 2013 FORD EXPLORER LAST WEEK AND I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH BURNT OIL SMELL GETTING INSIDE THE CABIN EVEN WITH A/C IN RECIRCULATION MODE. IT IS SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT TO PAY OVER 40K FOR A BRAND NEW SUV AND BEEN DEALING WITH SUCH AN ISSUE. I HAVE A NEWBORN AND I AM AFRAID TO TAKE IT WITH ME IN THE EXPLORER BECAUSE I GUESS IT IS HARMFUL FOR ANYBODY. FIRST TIME I BOUGHT A FORD AND I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT MY DECISION TO SWITCH BRANDS. I TOOK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NEED TO GO BACK ON MONDAY TO DO A SYSTEM UPDATE BUT I DON'T THINK UPDATING THE SOFTWARE IT'S GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. WHEN ACCELERATING THE VEHICLE QUICKLY WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON (DOES NOT MATTER IF IT'S ON FRESH AIR INTAKE OR RECIRCULATING), THERE IS A DEFINITE ODOR OF GASOLINE EXHAUST IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM CAN BE DUPLICATED AT ANY SPEED, FROM A DEAD STOP OR ACCELERATING DURING A PASSING MANEUVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND TWO TECHNICAL BULLETINS WERE ADDRESSED (ONE FOR A VIBRATION SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHICH WAS REPAIRED AND THE OTHER FOR THE EXHAUST ODOR IN THE CABIN). UPON COMPLETION OF THE FACTORY WARRANTIED TECHNICAL BULLETINS, THE ODOR REMAINED. UPON FURTHER REVIEW OF THE DOCUMENTATION, THE WRONG ODOR WAS ADDRESSED (RADIATOR FLUID, NOT GASOLINE EXHAUST). THE ODOR IS PRESENT REGARDLESS OF BURNING 87 OCTANE OR E-85 FUEL. *TR
