In September I started to notice a strong fuel odor coming from my 2013 Ford Explorer. I had the exterior of the vehicle cleaned thoroughly to ensure no gasoline was spilled on the vehicle while refuelling. The smell did go away temporarily, until I refuelled the vehicle. The odor has returned, and will not go away. On 10/6/2025 I took my vehicle to a local mechanic that works on my vehicles. A visual inspection was performed and they informed me that there is a leak and it appears to be coming from the top of the tank or an area above the tank. It is hard to identify the exact source without lowering the tank. They mechanic also informed me that Ford has a safety recall issue for something similar, 13S04. I checked with Ford and while there is a recall for the same model and year of my vehicle, my 2013 Explorer is not a part of the recall. I have contacted a local Ford Service Center and am waiting for a response from them.

Service advancetrac light came on while driving. Lost all propulsion and power steering. Almost went off road around a curve due to no power steering. Ford dealership diagnosed it as faulty steering sensor. Had that replaced about 18 months ago, now this near accident just happened. Service trac light traction control light are both on with no propulsion or power steering. I’ve been doing research on this and this seems to happen to a lot of ford owners as ford is the only manufacturer to produce vehicles with advancetrac system. How has this not been a recall yet?

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that upon approaching the vehicle she smelled a strong odor of gasoline inside her inclosed garage, after which, she overserved gasoline leaking from underneath the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the fuel delivery module. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V812000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 55,000.

This winter I began starting my vehicle and letting it warm up before driving it. After letting it run approximately 10 to 15 minutes, I opened my door and to get in and there was a very strong exhaust smell inside. I would have to roll my windows down to clear the cabin of the fumes. This happened every single time I would let it sit and warm up. There is also something happening with what I believe is my drive-train. There is a lot of different noises (squealing/whining, grinding (metal to metal), clanking and thumping) when I give it gas after sitting at a light. As soon as I step on the gas pedal it makes all the above noises and jerks, then acts like it doesn't want to go. It finally kicks in then goes. Once it kicks in, it drives just fine. The noise sounds like its coming from the undercarriage and sometimes the rear end. I am not driving the vehicle now, it is parked in my driveway, so I am currently without transportation. There is also a very loud popping noise coming from the front end. I was told this could be ball joints or possibly stabilizers.

I have been going through multiple sites trying to figure out what is going on with my car. I have only had my vehicle for less than a year and I barely even gotten to drive it. I'm now realizing every recall on the vehicle which there was like 13 has not been repaired. And I also have 4 different numbers for the odometer when I when I bought the vehicle at a 177000 but everything is reading at a 169000. I also purchased the vehicle in June not July like the title says. Also one of the titles said plate's not allowed. When I looked it up I believe this is a fleet vehicle and it does not say that anywhere on my title or in my paperwork. It did come from Canada. Is there any way you could possibly help me out with any of this? Also I had broken fuses and missing fuses. I had the 4 dealership look at it and a mechanic look at it and they both told me it looked like someone messed around with the wiring in my car.

VEHICLE EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT ENGINE SHUT OFF UNDER ALL DRIVING CONDITONS WHICH EXHIBITS A SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN THE VEHICLE ABRUBTLY LOSES TOTAL POWER WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAS RECENTLY BEEN AN ISSUE IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS WHILE MY WIFE AND KIDS WERE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 70 MPH IN TRAFFIC. VEHICLE STARTED BACK UP ONCE THE IGNITION WAS TURNED COMPLETELY OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES TO START THE VEHICLE BACK UP. THIS SCENARIO OCCURRED ON THE FREEWAY, IN TOWN DRIVING AND WHILE STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHT. CONTACTED LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND ALL THEY SAID WAS TO BRING IT IN. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK IT OUT AND HE WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE ANY ENGINE CODES WHILE RUNNING AN ECU SCAN. THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPLAINTS NOTED ONLINE WITH OTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNERS WHO HAVE ATTRIBUTED IT TO A "TERRAIN MANAGEMENT" FAULT. THIS IS THE SAME DIAGNOSIS MY LOCAL MECHANIC CAME UP WITH. THIS RESULTS IN THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE TO RECEIVE A THROTTLE POSITION IN THE WIDE OPEN INDICATION CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING OPERATED IN OAHU, HAWAII. I AM CURRENTLY DEPLOYED TO THE MIDDLE EAST SO I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY WHILE THIS IS THE ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE TO THEM.

I ATTEMPTED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE, PREPARING TO STOP. I WAS TRAVELING BETWEEN 65/70 MPH. WHEN PRESSING ON THE BREAKS THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN. I PUMPED THE BREAKS. THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME WHERE AT A STOP AND GETTING CLOSER VERY QUICKLY. I PUSHED AS HARD AS I COULD ON THE BREAK AND THEN TRIED TO PUSH ON THE EMERGENCY BREAK LOCATED ON THE FLOOR. CARBON MONOXIDE ODOR HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE. EVERY TIME I DRIVE I BEGIN TO FEEL NAUSEOUS AND GET A HEADACHE. I HAVE 2 BOYS, MY 11 YEAR OLD AGREES IT'S A STRONG ODOR AND HE BEGINS TO FEEL DIZZY. I FEAR TO EVEN HAVE MY CHILDREN ESPECIALLY MY 1 YEAR OLD IN THIS VEHICLE ANYMORE AND THEY WERE THE REASON I PURCHASED IT. I'VE HAD MY VEHICLE IN A CERTIFIED FORD DEALERSHIP TWICE NOW SINCE I PURCHASED A FEW MONTHS AGO HAS EVER MENTIONED THIS ISSUE! THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED! DOES SOMEONE NEED TO BE HOSPITALIZED OR DIE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE. I FINALLY LOOKED ONLINE TO SEE IF THIS WAS A COMMON ISSUE AND OF COURSE IT IS! WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AS THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROX 55 MPH ON A CITY HWY & VEHICLE SLOWED DRAMATICALLY & IDLED ROUGHLY. AFTER TURNING IT OFF & LETTING IT SIT FOR A MINUTE IT RESTARTED AND SEEMED OK. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TO CHECK & THEY CHECKED & SAID IT THREW A CODE P2111 & THEY ISOLATED IT TO A STUCK THROTTLE BODY. THEY REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AND CLEARED THE CODE.

LUCKILY I WAS IN MINIMAL TRAFFIC AND WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AS I WAS PULLING OVER, THE VEHICLE SPUTTERED A FEW TIMES AND I KILLED OUT THE VEHICLE AND LET IT SIT FOR A MINUTE THEN RESTARTED WITH NO TROUBLE.

MY EXPLORER HAS AN ISSUE WHEN STOPPED AND IN DRIVE WITH THE AC ON THE CAR PULLS/LUNGES FOWARD AS IF I HIT THE GAS/ ALSO WHEN IM PARKED AND THE AIR CON IS RUNNING AT SOME POINT THE ENGINE GOES DOWN BELOW 500 RPMS THEN KICKS UP TO 700 TO COMPENSATE THEN KICKS DOWN TO BELOW 500 , OVER AND OVER AGAIN. IF REV THE ENGINE A BIT, THEN IT GOES BACK DOWN TO NORMAL IDLE AND ITS FINE FOR MAYBE 10 MINUTES THEN DOES IT ALL OVER AGAIN. THIS CAN BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE CAR PULLS ITSELF FOWARD WITH NO HUMAN INTERACTION. THERE IS MULTIPLE WEBSITES DECLARING THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE FOR THIS CAR. THIS VEHICLE HAS THE EXHAUST FUME ISSUE WHERE THE CABIN FILLS WITH EXHAUST FUMES AND IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE DUE TO THE SMELL. YOU HAVE TO DRIVE WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN IN ORDER TO TOLERATE DRIVING. THE RECENT RECALL WAS DONE - VEHICLE TAKEN TO DEALER TO HAVE THE AC REPROGRAMED AND TAILGATE SEALS INSPECTED. THIS DID NOT WORK. WE WILL BE TRADING THE VEHICLE IN AND PURCHASING ANOTHER VEHICLE SOON. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. FORD HAS HAD TOO MANY SAFETY AND QUALITY ISSUES THAT GO IGNORED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THIS VEHICLE ALSO HAS THE PEELING PAINT ISSUE THAT FORD REFUSED TO ADDRESS AS WELL. POOR QUALITY - UNACCEPTABLE.

FOR THE LAST 4 MONTHS I HAVE BEEN SMELLING EXHAUST WHEN I DRIVE WITH THE AC OR HEATER ON. I TOOK THE CAR INTO FORD FOR AN INSPECTION IN OCTOBER, AND WHILE THEY 'COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG', THEY DID QUOTE ME FOR $1,400 TO FIX WHAT MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO ASKED IF MAYBE I WAS JUST SMELLING OTHER FUMES WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN. I TOOK THE CAR TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHO INSPECTED IT AND SAID IT WASN'T SAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT FORD SHOULD BE COVERING THIS. I JUST CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ON 11/16/17 TO TRY AND GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM (17N03). THEY TOLD ME THEY WILL NOT BE GETTING PARTS IN FOR ANOTHER MONTH. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! I AM DRIVING MY 3-YEAR-OLD AROUND IN THIS CAR, WITHOUT THE HEATER ON TRYING TO MINIMIZE THE FUMES. MEANWHILE FORD IS TELLING ME THAT THE MEDIA HAS BLOWN THIS OUT OF PROPORTION AND ONLY POLICE VEHICLES SHOULD BE GETTING THE FIXES.

THE DEALERSHIP DID A HORRIBLE JOB IN THE "REPAIR" - HAVING BROKEN OTHER PARTS OF THE CAR IN THE PROCESS. AFTER THEY "REPAIRED" THE CAR, IT BEGAN RANDOMLY SHUDDERING, WHILE IDLING. THE SAME SMELL WOULD BE PRESENT WHEN I STOPPED DRIVING AND WOULD OP N THE DOOR. SMELLED LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM UNDER THE DRIVERS SIDE WHEEL AREA. IT PERSISTED FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. I'VE TOLD FORD MANY TIMES BUT THEY SAY THERE'S NO RECALL. OR THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF ITS MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY. AT THE TIME IN 2014, WHEN I REALLY TOOK NOTICE, MY CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I BOUGHT MY CAR OUT OF ITS LEASE IN 6 OR7/2016 AND THERE WERE REPORTS OF EXHAUST ISSUES WITH PEOPLE HAVING A SMELL ON THE CABIN. IRONIC THAT I'VE BEEN COMPLAINING OF THIS TWO YEARS PRIOR TO IT COMING OUT IN THE NEWS. WHEN ASKED, I WAS UNSURE TO BUY A CAR WITH EXHAUST ISSUES, THEY REASSURED ME THERE WERE NO ACTIVE RECALLS. AND THAT THE EXHAUST WASN'T A PROBLEM. I THOUGHT I HAD ROADKILL ROTTING UNDER MY CAR, BUT AFTER NUMEROUS UNDER CARRIAGE CAR WASHES AND THEEE YEARS LATER, THE CAR STILL HAS THAT NATURAL GAS SMELL.

I AM ABLE TO PRESENT THEM WITH ALL OF THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSB) ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND THE FOLKS HERE HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT. IF THE CAR IS DRIVING AT ANY RATE WINDOWS UP OR DOWN THE CAR HAS THIS AWFUL ODOR. THE ODOR WAS SO BAD THAT WHEN I PULLED IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER IT COMPLETELY FILLED THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD EVERYONE COMPLAINING (MAINLY EMPLOYEES). BUT THEY HAD NO IDEA ABOUT THE ISSUES WITH THESE TRUCKS. I AM CURIOUS WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ON SOMETHING THAT SEEMS TO BE REOCCURRING ISSUE BUT I AM EVEN MORE DISAPPOINTED THAT FORDS EMPLOYEES DON'T KNOW THESE COMMON ISSUES WITH THEIR CARS. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DRIVE IN THAT CAR WITHOUT THIS BEING FIXED AND I DEFINITELY BELIEVE IT CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR WORST END LIVES. EXHAUST FUMES LEAKING INTO CABIN OF CAR ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCELERATING OR RUNNING A/C. CURRENTLY HAVE AN OPEN CASE WITH FORD BUT THEY ARE REFUSING TO FIX THIS ISSUE AT THEIR EXPENSE. I CALLED MY FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT A SERVICE BULLETIN HAS BEEN ISSUED TO FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT SINCE MY VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE FIX. AFTER CHECKING ON LINE,THIS IS EVIDENTLY A WIDE-SPREAD PROBLEM OF A SAFETY NATURE (MY WIFE HAS ASTHMA) AND ONE THAT IS INHERENT IN MANY EXPLORERS NATIONALLY, AND IF NOT CORRECTED AT FORD'S EXPENSE BY A SPECIAL WARRANTY EXCEPTION, THEN THE VEHICLES SHOULD BE REPAIRED UNDER A SAFETY RECALL.

ON AUG.3TH, 2016 I WAS DRIVING MY FORD EXPLORER 2013 ON A FREEWAY GOING APROX. 65MILES/HR. AT ONE POINT A WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLES ENGINE QUIT. I MADE SURE TO PUT MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON AND SLOWLY CHANGED LANES TO GET OUT OF THE WAY. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS AS THE FREEWAY IS UNDER HEAVY CONSTRUCTION SO THERE NOT MUCH SPACE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. I MANAGED TO FIND THE "SAFEST" SPOT AND STOPPED THE VEHICLE. I TURNED EVERYTHING OFF AND WAS ABOUT TO CALL FOR HELP . I FIGURED I SHOULD TRY AND START IT UP AND SEE IF IT WILL MOVE FROM ME INSTEAD. ONCE I DID THIS, AND I KNEW THAT IF I GAVE IT SOME GAS THE VEHICLE WOULD GO, I TOOK IT BACK HOME AND LEFT IT THERE UNTIL I COULD GET IT TO THE MECHANICS. THE MECHANIC WE USED SAID HE'S SEEN THIS QUITE OFTEN AND ITS SOME TYPE OF SENSOR THAT GIVES THE ENGINE THE FUEL IT NEEDS TO RUN. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SENSOR FAILED. WE GOT IT FIXED BUT FORD WOULD NOT COVER FOR THIS. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE WARRANTY IS FINISHED ON THIS VEHICLE BUT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH MILES ON IT TO WARRANT THIS TYPE OF FAULT. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD TOO! I WAS AND STILL AM VERY UPSET THAT THEY WILL NOT HELP US PAY FOR THIS FAULTY SENSOR. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW TO PUT FURTHER ACTION ON THIS PROBLEM AS I AM SURE THERE HAVE BEEN MANY OTHER FORDS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE CAR STALLED AFTER DE-ACCELERATING TO A STOPPED POSITION AND MADE A "CLUNK" SOUND FROM THE TRANSMISSION AREA. DURING THE FIRST EVENT AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, A VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD THAT SOUNDED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS RE-STARTED AND SEEMED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED BUT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. DURING THE SECOND EVENT AT A STOP SIGN, ANOTHER VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR AND THE CAR ACTUALLY SHIFTED SO THAT IT WAS FELT BY THE BODY. AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR THIS TIME AND PLACING IT INTO DRIVE, THIS TIME THE CAR DID NOT MOVE WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. INSTEAD, ONLY THE ENGINE REVVED UP. IN ADDITION, WHEN PUTTING THE GEAR INTO THE REVERSE OR DRIVE POSITION, THAT LOUD "CLUNK" SOUND AND THE PHYSICAL SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE ALSO HAPPENED. BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD LITERALLY NOT GO, WE CALLED FOR A TOW-TRUCK AND TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. AT THE DEALERSHIP, A CUSTOMER CARE REP AND A TECHNICIAN CAME OUTSIDE TO LOOK AT THE CAR. WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND DRIVE, THE SAME "CLUNK" AND SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE WAS OBSERVED AND ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH MEN. HOWEVER, AT THIS POINT THE CAR WOULD MOVE FORWARD WHEN APPLYING THE GAS. WE LEFT THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION. WHEN FOLLOWING UP EARLY THE NEXT WEEK, ,WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY HAD DRIVEN THE CAR ABOUT 100 MILES OVER THE COURSE OF THREE TRIPS AND THE CAR WAS RUNNING NORMALLY. ALSO, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC/EVALUATION OF THE PCM AND TRANSMISSION DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING WAS WRONG. IN MY OPINION, THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS HERE: #1, THE STALLING/TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND #2, THE INABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM FOR SUCH A MAJOR EVENT

SMELL IS MORE NOTICEABLE WHEN IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT OR OTHERWISE NOT IN MOTION. HAVE TRIED TWO SERVICE CALLS RECENTLY WITH NO RESOLUTION. AN ADDITIONAL RELATED ISSUE IS AN EVEN STRONGER FUEL SMELL IN MY GARAGE. THIS IS MORE OF A PRE-COMBUSTION SMELL. THE DEALER REPORTED THAT THIS IS NORMAL AS A RESULT OF THE CAPLESS GAS TANK FILTER SYSTEM. DEFINITELY A HEALTH HAZARD FOR ANYONE ENTERING THE GARAGE, AND THE SMELL GETS INTO THE HOUSE. THESE ISSUES HAVE PERSISTED FOR THE PAST 6-12 MONTHS, GETTING WORSE OVER TIME. TO DATE, THE DEALER HAS NO RESOLUTION FOR EITHER ISSUE. PLEASE HELP.

AFTER REFUSING TO TAKE IT BACK UNTIL THEY FIGURED IT OUT THE NEXT DAY WE WERE TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS "BAD". 2 DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS "FIXED" AND RETURNED TO US. THE VERY NEXT MORNING WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH VEHICLE LOSING PROPULSION AND DECELERATING RAPIDLY. AFTER TAKING IT BACK TO THE THE DEALERSHIP WE WERE TOLD THAT THE "NEW" THROTTLE BODY THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS ALSO "BAD". AFTER ANOTHER 2 DAYS WE PICKED UP OUR CAR AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SO FAR.

VAPOR CANISTER PURGE VALVE INOPERATIVE AT 72,000 MILES CAUSING A MISS/ HESITATION WHEN VEHICLE WAS RUNNING. LIGHT CAME ON AND A LOSS OF POWER OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE. IMMEDIATELY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THIS WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE VAPOR CANISTER PURGE VALVE. FORD DECIDED THIS WAS NOT AN EMISSIONS COMPONENT AND DID NOT WARRANTY THE REPAIR UNDER THEIR 80000 MILE EMISSIONS WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THIS IS CLEARLY DEFINED AS AN EMISSIONS COMPONENT BY THE EPA.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT MORE SEAMS NEEDED TO BE CLOSED AND VENTS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000.

I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVABLE IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION. I AM HANDICAPPED AND HAVE AN ELECTRIC CHAIR CARRIER ON THE BACK OF THE EXPLORER WHICH I HAVE TO USE TO TAKE MY ELECTRIC CHAIR TO WORK.
