The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the PTU. The contact was also informed that the rear differential needed to be refilled. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V537000 (Suspension), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 93,000.

My water pump started having a small leak about 2 weeks ago to where I had to put water in to get to work and then again to get home. I contacted Ford to inquire about a cost for this repair and was told they had to diagnose first. Then on Friday Aug 1st my children and I were driving on the interstate and had just gotten off at our exit and the car died in the middle of busy traffic. After waiting for the car to cool, the water was added and I took the car to a Ford dealership. If I had been on the interstate when this happened we would’ve been in a serious if not deadly accident. The leak needs looked into to see if it’s a faulty pump. I’m now looking at a complete engine repair over a leak. Also the back passenger door frame is a blind spot for us who are 5’5.

When Driving I started noticing that my steering wheel what getting harder to turn and it felt like it was lagging control. I could still turn and maneuver the steering wheel but the control overall was defiantly not safe. I stopped in at our mechanic and they test drove it. He stated that yes something was definably wrong with the steering system and he said it was hopefully the u-joint for control arm. We made any appointment for the next following week. I drove my explorer with extreme caution and the steering issue just got worse. I noticed that I now have a griding noise coming from my steering when I turn. This is a safety issue because it just going to seize up and I will not have any control over my vehicle. When I did finally did get my explorer into the mechanic the next following week he stated that I needed a new rack and pinion. I only have 140000 miles on my explorer. The cost was astronomical!!! $1700 for the rack and Pinon $600 in labor and a wheel alignment. and don't forget tax. That was a shocker!! I cant afford that kind of out of pocket expense. My vehicle vin does not fall into the recalled safety notice however this seems to be a big issues with the 2013 Ford Explores. My safely overall is the main issued!! I expect ford to follow through in how they manufacture its vehicles and maintenance products. Please include all explorers in the recall!!!!

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and stalled. The power train warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the steering gear rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V286000 (Steering); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 183,340.

I have an electric power steering pump, it’s not working at all. It’s showing it’s part of a recall but mine is just shy of the date. But I have spoken with many ford dealers and they have told me to report this to here, cause it should be a part of it as well. It’s a very hefty expense to repair this. But no one should be driving one with power steering assist fault and traction control fault on dash. And cannot even turn the wheel. This is an accident waiting to happen.

My vehicle a 2013 ford explorer has a power steering assist fault rendering my vehicle un usable which i just bought through carvana this last summer has had a multitude of issues including a piller trim flying off the same day I bought it and the warranty carvana gave me provided no where close to me to have repaired plus my backup camera stopped working within 2 months of buying it and now the power steering assist fault has ultimately stopped me from being able to drive the car and I see that ford stopped allowing the recal of this issue to be fixed since 177,000 vehicles are affected by this problem I just think this wrong

Unknown. Vehicle disengaged from park to neutral while in garage after vehicle was shutoff (approximately 3-5 minutes ). Vehicle rolled out of garage crossed the street and stopped in neighbors yard. No damage occurred. Incident happened within the last hour, so nothing has been inspected as of yet. I have been hearing an electronic hum with the sound of moving parts in the driver side rear end after I place the transmisson shift to park and then turn the key to the off position. I'd estimate that has been happening sporadically for the last year. If the electronic parking module or it's component is located in the driver rear end of a 2013 Ford Explorer I would think that may the issue.

My vehicle was purchased new from Ford dealer with factory tow option, which comes with an undercarriage cover with integrated air scoop to help cool engine & transmission while towing. This cover (Ford # BB5Z-9910494-A) is designed with quarter tern thumb screws to hold it on to the undercarriage. While driving on highway, this part fell off and was not recovered. Now my vehicle is at risk of serious damage to either transmission or engine, or both in not having this key part. The weak design for fastening this metal part to the vehicle is a serious safety hazard, and Ford should provide a resigned replacement part through recall.

My 2013 Ford Explorer had coolant leaking below (No check engine light present). If I didn't notice the coolant on the garage floor, I would've never known of any issue. After taking it in to the dealership, they said the issue was defective Water pump (Actual Replacement Pump Cost: $155.64) that is leaking coolant and failing to properly cool the engine. Due to the design flaw of the engine, the water pump is internally positioned in the engine requiring disassembly of the entire engine to access and replace the faulty pump. Since this is a labor intensive requirement, the $155 part required $1,814.95 in labor costs associated with the replacement. This is uncalled for. Not to mention, the parts that were removed in the engine also were required to be replaced based on manufacture requirement (additional $802 in gaskets/seals/bolts/etc. If the water pump was not replaced, it would lead to complete engine failure. I had no options other to pay $2,930.22 in total parts/labor costs to replace a $155 Water pump. Shame on Ford.

The power steering in my 2013 Explorer went out on the road, and a light came on. My I am having my steering assembly replaced. 2800.00 plus. Please advise, as there was a recall on this model for same, though I received no info regarding the issue. My car was made in Chicago as well. The recall number was 14S06, but for some reason, my car was not covered. I filed a verbal complaint as well. Thank you. (The car is being inspected and handled at Lynch Ford, Mount Vernon, Iowa. ) My safety was at risk, and the situation was dangerous. Thankfully, I was not hurt. This took place on the 24th of July. Thank you. 2013 Ford Explorer does not appear on VIN list for 14S06 or for 15N01. The vehicle is exhibiting a dangerous loss of steering assist and I believe this VIN should be included in the recall.

Transmission has failed at 136,000 miles. All maintenance is up to date and has been performed by the dealership. When i pulled out on a main road the car would not accelerate almost causing an accident. I took it to our local mechanic and they had two mechanic's check it and stated the transmission failed. Check engine light show catalytic converter failure, Terraine maintenance failure and solenoid shift failure that came out of the middle of now where .

Water pump failure, this part has been recalled on most Ford explorers but not mine and I’m unsure why. My water pump has failed and is causing additional damage to hoses and the engine due to overheating. My vehicle overheated on the interstate and was completely drained of water. I had to pay a $400 tow bill and walk over 10 miles home. The water pump started working again and then once again stopped working. This has caused a lot of problems to my safety and well-being, not to mention I have lost my job due to being late for work multiple times due to not having a reliable form of transportation. A quick Internet search has showed me this is a very common issue for my vehicle and I believe Ford should be held responsible for the faulty part.

at any speed the Explorer would go into "limp Mode"....NO THROTTLE...Terrian Management Error would appear and the wrench sign,,,,,dash lights and terrain knob light would go off....at highway speeds, with no warning, this could be a deadly situation.....taken to our local Ford dealership.....they had no idea what happened....COULD DO NOTHING...after some research we decided to have them replace the THROTTLE BODY, at our "out of pocket" expense.....driven the car three times with no problems.....but after the first time it happened, to my wife, we went like 2 months without a problem...then it happened again...three more times before we took it in......YouTube is full of folks having the same problem....Explorers and F-150 trucks......you can stop and turn the car off...wait about 20 secs and restart...everything was back to normal...TIL THE NEXT TIME.....my Wife refuses to drive the car again til it is FIXED.....I drive it twice a week only....2013 Ford Explorer LTD....V6

Faulty water pumps causing leakage and eventually seize the engine

This winter I began starting my vehicle and letting it warm up before driving it. After letting it run approximately 10 to 15 minutes, I opened my door and to get in and there was a very strong exhaust smell inside. I would have to roll my windows down to clear the cabin of the fumes. This happened every single time I would let it sit and warm up. There is also something happening with what I believe is my drive-train. There is a lot of different noises (squealing/whining, grinding (metal to metal), clanking and thumping) when I give it gas after sitting at a light. As soon as I step on the gas pedal it makes all the above noises and jerks, then acts like it doesn't want to go. It finally kicks in then goes. Once it kicks in, it drives just fine. The noise sounds like its coming from the undercarriage and sometimes the rear end. I am not driving the vehicle now, it is parked in my driveway, so I am currently without transportation. There is also a very loud popping noise coming from the front end. I was told this could be ball joints or possibly stabilizers.

The PTU (Power Transfer Unit) was engineered without a drain plug and described by Ford as "Maintenance Free" for the life of the vehicle. Due to the close proximity of the PTU to hot exhaust components, small fluid capacity, and no recommendation by Ford to be serviced for the life of the vehicle, my PTU started failing within warranty under 50,000 miles. The propane smell within the cab of the vehicle is a tell tale of the PTU fluid breaking down under severe heat conditions, spewing out of the vent and flashing on the surrounding exhaust components. This was not diagnosed at that time by my local Ford dealer, so the problem continued until the PTU finally failed out of warranty at approximately 71,000 miles. Research confirmed that this PTU design failure has been recognized by Ford and that it can lead to a complete failure while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control and risk to lives. Recognition by Ford of this problem in the 2013 model year Explorer is self evident, as later model years incorporated air dams to direct air to flow over the PTU to help with cooling, and incorporated drain plugs and recommended service intervals to properly service the PTU. There have been thousands of premature PTU failures in Ford vehicles, but Ford has not yet issued a recall or replacement PUT's with a drain plug for serviceability for my 2013 model year. My PTU had to be replaced at my cost with another non-serviceable PTU, that will no doubt fail prematurely. I am concerned that my vehicle could pose risk to my family's safety in the future, because the repair that was done by my Ford dealer is not a long term, complete solution.

As stated in the 2 of the articles in this year make and model range 2013-2018 Ford explorer. The car has been up to date with maintenance, after a couple thousand miles after the oil changed was. I then took the car to a mechanic shop and was told the water pump and thermostat were failing. I stopped driving the car and decided to take it to a ford dealer. After visiting Palmetto Ford in Miami. I was told the car did not have an open recall for this vin and they did not cover it. It is evident that the problem has been present in many ford explorers in this year and has been a safety concern since the car overheats while on the road. I will need to have a recall placed on my vin number so that i can take this to a ford dealer and get it resolved asap so that i can get back to my normal living as I do not have a transportation and happen to be losing time from work and spending money in rides. The contact owns a 2013 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound. Upon inspection underneath the vehicle, the contact noticed that the link shaft bracket and CV axle had broken in half. Additionally, the vehicle rolled away while the gear shifter was in park(P). The contact activated the parking brake to stop the vehicle from rolling away. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V692000 (Power Train) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was unknown. Consumer was left with loss of power and a loud metal hitting metal sound the tripod spider joint/ bearing had broke because it was not properly supported due to bracket failure the recall for this part is for models starting with 2014 Ford Explorer mine is a 2013 mine was built at the same plant as the recall for 2014 and up the exact problems the recall list is what happened even down to the roll away even through its in park it will still roll unless the parking brake is applied.

I was driving on the interstate and all of a sudden the vehicle lost power. It slowed down and I had to pull off the interstate. I thought it was because I broke for the speed limit change to fast. This was before July. It happened another time and I noticed the dashboard and it showed a big wrench symbol. Pryor to the mishap I saw nothing on the dashboard, no warning at all. I checked the internet and it was stating that there were a recall on this problem. I have not received any paperwork.

The vehicle was turned off and restarted and regained normal steering functionality. The failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and diagnosed that the battery, alternator, and transmission needed to be replaced. The battery and alternator were replaced. The dealer also performed three recall repairs for the door, rear toe link, and exhaust. and the battery and alternator were replaced. The failure recurred and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for transmission repair. The vehicle remained at the mechanic's. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V286000 (Steering). The failure mileage was 200,000.

FOUR 2013 FORD EXPLORER RAN HOT WHILE I WAS OPERATING THE VEHICLE. WE THOUGHT IT WAS LOW ON ANTIFREEZE SO WE ADDED SOME. OUT OF PRECAUTION, WE BEGAN MONITORING THE ANTIFREEZE LEVEL AND NOTICE THAT THE LEVEL WOULD DROP, OVER A COUPLE OF WEEKS, ENOUGH WHICH REQUIRED US TO HAVE TO ADD MORE ANTIFREEZE. MY WIFE CALLED FORD'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO DETERMINE/CONFIRM THE PROBLEM. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE THE WATER PUMP WAS MAY BE DEFECTIVE. ON OUR WAY TO THE APPOINTMENT, THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN AND HAD TO BE TOWED THE REST OF THE WAY. UPON INSPECTION, WE WERE TOLD THAT ANTIFREEZE HAD LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE, AND FURTHER, THE ENGINE WAS DAMAGED BECAUSE OF A BROKEN TIMING CHAIN.

ALL TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM CONTINUOUSLY FAULTS EVEN AFTER BEING IT REPAIRED IN 2016, IT WAS OKAY FOR 2 YEARS STARTED AGAIN FAULTING EVERY NOW AND THEN IN 2019. THIS YEAR THE ALL TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM STOPPED WORK COMPLETELY IN MARCH. AT FIRST THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE IN MOTION FOR IT TO FAULT BUT NOW IT HAPPENS RIGHT AFTER STARTING THE SUV. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE AS IT SEEMS TO LOOSE GRIP OF THE ROAD NO MATTER THE WEATHER.

MY WIFE EXPERIENCE "SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION" OF OUR FORD EXPLORER. MY WIFE WAS PULLING INTO A WALGREENS PARKING LOT, SLOWED DOWN TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE WHEN THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED. MY WIFE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE AS SHE WAS ENTERING THE SPACE, BUT THE BRAKE COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR. THERE WAS AN EXTREME AND SPONTANEOUS ACCELERATION. ONCE THE CAR HIT THE POLE, IT AUTOMATICALLY SHIFTED INTO REVERSE EVEN WITH MY WIFE APPLYING THE BRAKE. THE CAR CAME TO A STOP AFTER HITTING A PARKED TRUCK. AT FIRST THE CAR WAS VIBRATING A LITTLE WHEN DOWNSHIFTING FROM 45 TO A STOP. AFTER A FEW MONTHS, THE ENGINE SPUTTERS AND THEN SEIZES UP AND DIES WHEN PUT IN DRIVE FROM PARK AND ALSO FROM PARK TO REVERSE. WHEN STOPPING THE CAR STILL FEELS LIKE THE DOWNSHIFT IS FAULTY AND WHEN AT THE COMPLETE STOP THE FEELS LIKE IT GOING TO LOSE POWER AND DIE. THE CAR HAS NO TROUBLE CODES. 2013 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED 4WD 3.5L BECAME UNDRIVEABLE IN A MATTER OF 4 DAYS. IT STARTED AS A SQUEAL AS I ACCELERATED FROM A STOP AND QUICKLY ESCALATED TO LURCHING, PULSATING AND BUMPING AT ALL SPEEDS. MECHANIC INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS A CALIPER THAT WAS LOCKED UP BUT WHEN I BROUGHT IT BACK 2 DAYS LATER AFTER THE PROBLEM PERSISTED AND WORSENED HE REALIZED THAT THE TRANSFER CASE WAS FAULTY. HE NOTED THAT FORD IS NOTORIOUS FOR FAULTY TRANSFER CASES AND HORRIBLE WARRANTIES THAT END BEFORE THE PARTS GO. I'M TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE COULD LOCK UP AT ANY MOMENT AND CAUSE ME TO NOT BE ABLE TO REACT PUTTING MY FAMILIES SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND ME IN DANGER. HELP PLEASE! I'M TOLD THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND NOT ISOLATED TO MY VEHICLE. MULTIPLE PHONE CALLS TO FORD HAVE ME ON HOLD FOR 15+ MINUTES WITH NO SOUND AND THEN PHONE CALL ENDS WITHOUT THE CHANCE TO TALK TO A REPRESENTATIVE. MY VEHICLE HAD ROUGHLY 94,000 MILES AT THE TIME. REPAIR COST WAS ESTIMATED BETWEEN $3,000 - $5,000.

THEY WHERE AT OUR HOUSE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR, WHEN THEY WHERE LEAVING WE NOTICED THAT OUR VEHICLE HAD DISENGAGED FROM PARK AND ROLLED 15' DOWN THE DRIVEWAY INTO THEIR VEHICLE. THANKFULLY, THERE WERE ONLY A FEW SCRATCHES ON EITHER VEHICLE. OUR DRIVEWAY IS FAIRLY FLAT, IT HAS A 1-3 DEGREE SLOPE TO IT. LEADING TO THE CONCLUSION, THAT THERE IS NOT A LARGE INCLINE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FORCED OUT OF PARK. THERE HAS TO BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE WAY THE TRANSMISSION IS ENGAGED INTO PARK OR THERE IS YET ANOTHER PROBLEM WITH THE SHIFT LINKAGE. THE SHIFT LINKAGE WAS ADJUSTED THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED. THE SECOND TIME THE SHIFT LINKAGE WAS REPLACED. WE ARE TAKING IT BACK TO THE DEALER TODAY TO SEE WHAT THEY FEEL NEEDS REPLACED THIS TIME.

THEN LAST WEDNESDAY, 12/5 MY CAR KEPT SEIZING WHEN I WAS BRAKING OR ACCELERATING, AND I ALMOST WRECKED MY VEHICLE MULTIPLE TIMES. AFTER RULING OUT THE U JOINT OR DRIVE SHAFT, WE THEN FOUND THE GLISTENING LEAK ON THE PTU, AND WERE ABLE TO DEDUCE THE SMELL AS BEING DIFF FLUID DRIPPING DOWN ONTO THE EXHAUST AND COMING THROUGH THE CABIN. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVEABLE, THE NEXT MORNING, I CONTACTED THE FORD DEALER, WHO PUT ME INTO A RENTAL, AND WE GINGERLY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER THAT AFTERNOON. YESTERDAY, I GET A PHONE CALL CONFIRMING WHAT WE SUSPECTED THE PROBLEM TO BE. WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER, HE CONFIRMED THAT THIS IS DEFINITELY A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MULTIPLE FORD MODELS, AND HE IS COMPLETELY FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM. 24 HOURS INTO THIS, FORD IS SAYING IT'S NOT THEIR PROBLEM, AND THAT THERE'S NO "PROMOTIONS" THAT I'M ELIGIBLE FOR. I'M ABOUT AT MY WITS END. I HAVE ONE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, AND I'M A SINGLE MOM. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO TO GET THIS RESOLVED AND GET FORD TO FIX THEIR PROBLEM THAT IS NOW COSTING ME CLOSE TO $2,000. TO FURTHER DESCRIBE THE ISSUE, WHEN IT FINALLY GOT TO ITS WORST, WHEN COMPRESSING THE BRAKE, YOU WOULD HEAR A GRINDING NOISE AND THE CAR WOULD JUMP AS THOUGH IT WAS GOING TO STALL. IT STARTED HAPPENING AGAIN AT 50043 MILES AND WAS TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE ON 6 SEPT 2018. AGAIN, THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS IS NOT JUST AN INDICATING PROBLEM AND THAT THE CAR MY NOT BE FULLY IN PARK THEREBY CREATING AN INADVERTENT ROLL AWAY OR WORSE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

A SWITCH OR COMPONENT IN MULTIPLE FORD (EXPLORER, EDGE, TAURUS, LINCOLN MKX; YEARS 2011-2015) AND MAZDA 6 VEHICLES IS FAILING AND INDICATING THAT VEHICLE IS NOT IN PARK. THE SWITCH IS WITHIN THE SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD WHEN A VEHICLE IS NOT SECURED IN A PARKED POSITION. FORD IS CHARGING CUSTOMERS $250-1000 TO FIX - DEPENDING UPON THE DEALER & CUSTOMER (MALE, FEMALE, WHITE, BLACK, HISPANIC) - & IT REQUIRES COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY. THIS COMPONENT IS PART OF THE POWER TRAIN BUT FORD WILL NOT COVER IT UNDER THE 5 YR/60000 MILE WARRANTY. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WERE FOUND DURING GOOGLE SEARCH FOR "FORD SHIFT TO PARK LEVER ASSEMBLY PROBLEM." IF A VEHICLE IS POSITIONED ON A SLOPE, IT COULD EASILY ROLL AWAY AND INJURE SOMEONE. ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO MY CAR STALLED AFTER BEING PARKED AT A MAJOR HIGHWAY RED LIGHT. I WAS LUCKILY ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD SAFELY. THE WRENCH WARNING LIGHT CAME ON (POWER TRAIN ISSUE) BUT AFTER SHUTTING OFF & RESTARTING THE CAR WORKED FINE. I HAD IT SERVICED AFTER & IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL LAST FRIDAY,6/16/17. AGAIN AFTER BEING STOPPED AT A LIGHT ON A MAJOR ROAD & CAUSING ME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. IT HAS NOW HAPPENED 6 TIMES IN A WEEK. ALWAYS AFTER A STOP SIGN/LIGHT. EVERY TIME IT SEEMS TO LOSE ENGINE POWER, THE WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON AND THE CAR SLOWS TO A SCARY SLOW SPEED. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF, THE LIGHT GOES AWAY AND THE CAR COMES BACK ON. I DIDN'T MAKE IT A STREET OVER FROM MY HOUSE BEFORE IT HAPPENED AGAIN AT A 4-WAY STOP. I IMMEDIATELY CAME BACK HOME AND THE CAR WILL SIT IN MY DRIVEWAY UNTIL I TAKE IT TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED. AFTER READING SO MANY ACCOUNTS OF THIS HAPPENING AND CERTAIN MODELS GETTING RECALLED OR "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PLANS" I DON'T GET HOW FORD HASN'T HAD TO REPLACE THEM ALL. IT IS DANGEROUS! TRANSMISSION FAILED BADLY AT 50,982 MILES (UNDER WARRANTY STILL). BROUGHT IN FOR REPAIRS ON 1/31/17 AND PICKED UP ON EVENING OF 2/8. DEALERSHIP OVERHAULED TRANSMISSION REPLACING FRONT PUMP/TORQUE CONVERTER/CENTER SUPPORT AND SEALS/GASKETS. ON 2/9, AT 75 MPH ON INTERSTATE WITH SEMI-TRUCK BEHIND ME, TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY DROPPED GEARS AND RED-LINED TO 6500 RPMS, BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO RE-ENGAGE IT BY MANUALLY DROPPING TO THE M SETTING AND THEN UP TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO DRIVE. LOST HORSEPOWER AND IF I HAD NOT THOUGHT TO TRY THE ABOVE OR PANICKED LIKE A LOT OF FOLKS WOULD DO, I WOULD HAVE BEEN RUN OVER BY THE SEMI-TRUCK AS I WAS QUICKLY LOSING SPEED. THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, REFUSED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND GAVE BACK TO ME IN THE SAME CONDITION ON EVENING OF 2/27/17 (THOUGH RECEIPT IS DATED 2/25) ADVISING ME TO MONITOR IT AND CONTACT THEM IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN (PROVIDED I AM STILL ALIVE TO DO SO)!! THE POWER TAKE-OFF UNIT HAD TO BE REPLACED WITHIN A LITTLE OVER 3 YEARS OF PURCHASE AT A COST OF $14781.11, WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN DOUBLE THE COST HAD IT BEEN TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP. THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I WAS SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT THIS IS AN ENDEMIC PROBLEM THAT IS NEITHER SUBJECT TO RECALL NOR PRIOR NOTICE FROM FORD. I SPOKE TO A FORD REPRESENTATIVE WHO WAS CAREFUL TO SAY THAT SHE HAD NO STATISTICS ABOUT THE PROBLEM; WHEN I ASKED HER IF FORD DID, SHE REPEATED HER PRIOR STATEMENT, AS IF COACHED. THE TAKE-OFF UNIT LEAKED FLUID EVERYWHERE, AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL WHILE DRIVING AT STREET AND HIGHWAYS SPEEDS, WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN A DANGER TO MY FAMILY AND ME. STALLING OCCURRED EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT IN 4-WHEEL DRIVE. AGAIN, I WAS SURPRISED THAT THERE IS NO NHTSA RECALL ISSUED, NOR DOES FORD NOTIFY DRIVERS OF THE POTENTIAL DANGER. SHIFT TO PARK ISSUE - THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK BUT THE DASH LIGHTS UP AND SAYS "SHIFT TO PARK'. THIS HAPPENS EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY IN PARK. AFTER SEVERAL TRIES CANNOT GET THE DASH LIGHT TO TURN OFF. PROBLEM IS EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS TURNED OFF THE BACK LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL STAY ON THUS DRAINING THE BATTERY. IF YOU DON'T DRIVE THE CAR FOR A FEW DAYS YOU COULD COME OUT TO A CAR THAT WON'T START BECAUSE OF A DEAD BATTERY. HAD IT FIXED AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP COSTING ROUGHLY $500. THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT IS OUT ON THE ISSUE SAYS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SHIFTER. THE PROBLEM IS SOMETHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE SHIFTER. MY VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 60,000 MILES. THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM (JUST GOOGLE "SHIFT TO PARK"). ACCORDING TO THE TSB THIS AFFECTS EXPLORER, EDGE, AND SOME LINCOLN MODELS AS WELL. DISAPPOINTED FORD WILL NOT TAKE CARE OF SINCE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER SAYS FORD SHOULD PAY FOR IT (BOB UTTER FORD) AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE SAYS THEY ONLY PAY FOR ITEMS UNDER WARRANTY, RECALLS, AND THE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM. THIS DOES NOT FALL UNDER ANY OF THOSE PER FORD. FORD SHOULD ANTI UP FOR THIS AS A RECALL SINCE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. VEHICLE STATIONARY DURING PROBLEM.

VEHICLE IS A 2013 EXPLORER XLT THAT WAS PURCHASED NEW. IT HAS 69K AND IS OUTSIDE THE 5YR/60K POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. MY WIFE COMMUTES TO WORK AND DRIVES THE KIDS TO SCHOOL. WE DO NOT TOW OR HAUL ANYTHING WITH IT. A FEW DAYS AGO SHE WAS PULLING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND HIT ABOUT 20MPH WHEN IT LOST POWER AND WOULDN'T ACCELERATE (LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL). SHE PULLED OVER AND TRIED TO TURN AROUND, BUT THERE WAS NO REVERSE. WAS ABLE TO GET HOME WITH HELP FROM A NEIGHBOR. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR AT AN INTERSECTION THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DIFFERENT POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH. I DROVE IT AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND "TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT LIGHT CAME ON. IT THROUGH A FEW CODES P0756, P2701, AND U3003. HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER AND THEY ULTIMATELY ARE SAYING THE CODES MEAN THAT THERE IS A MECHANICAL FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $5,800. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY HAVE YET TO DO ANYTHING. I FIND IT APPALLING THAT A 3 YEAR OLD CAR WITH UNDER 70K HAD A TOTAL CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION AND I'M EXPECTED TO COVER THE ENTIRE COST.

THE THROTTLE BODY FAILS CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO ENTER "LIMP" MODE REGARDLESS OF LOCATION OR CURRENT SPEED. WILL GO 70 ON A HIGHWAY THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN LOSE SPEED AND SPEED CONTROL. THIS ISSUE CAN ALSO HAPPEN WHEN ACCELERATING, SLOWING DOWN, ETC. THE BIGGEST WORRY IS LOSING SPEED CONTROL REGARDLESS OF LOCATION. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN OTHER FORD MODELS AND IS BEING VOLUNTARILY REPAIRED (BY FORD). HOWEVER, FOR SOME REASON THE 2013 FORD EXPLORER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE CAR STALLED AFTER DE-ACCELERATING TO A STOPPED POSITION AND MADE A "CLUNK" SOUND FROM THE TRANSMISSION AREA. DURING THE FIRST EVENT AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, A VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD THAT SOUNDED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS RE-STARTED AND SEEMED TO DRIVE NORMALLY. TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, WE BROUGHT THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT CHECKED BUT THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. DURING THE SECOND EVENT AT A STOP SIGN, ANOTHER VERY NOTICEABLE "CLUNK" WAS HEARD FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR AND THE CAR ACTUALLY SHIFTED SO THAT IT WAS FELT BY THE BODY. AFTER RE-STARTING THE CAR THIS TIME AND PLACING IT INTO DRIVE, THIS TIME THE CAR DID NOT MOVE WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. INSTEAD, ONLY THE ENGINE REVVED UP. IN ADDITION, WHEN PUTTING THE GEAR INTO THE REVERSE OR DRIVE POSITION, THAT LOUD "CLUNK" SOUND AND THE PHYSICAL SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE ALSO HAPPENED. BECAUSE THE CAR WOULD LITERALLY NOT GO, WE CALLED FOR A TOW-TRUCK AND TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. AT THE DEALERSHIP, A CUSTOMER CARE REP AND A TECHNICIAN CAME OUTSIDE TO LOOK AT THE CAR. WHEN PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE AND DRIVE, THE SAME "CLUNK" AND SHIFTING OF THE VEHICLE WAS OBSERVED AND ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH MEN. HOWEVER, AT THIS POINT THE CAR WOULD MOVE FORWARD WHEN APPLYING THE GAS. WE LEFT THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR EVALUATION. WHEN FOLLOWING UP EARLY THE NEXT WEEK, ,WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY HAD DRIVEN THE CAR ABOUT 100 MILES OVER THE COURSE OF THREE TRIPS AND THE CAR WAS RUNNING NORMALLY. ALSO, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC/EVALUATION OF THE PCM AND TRANSMISSION DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING WAS WRONG. IN MY OPINION, THERE ARE TWO PROBLEMS HERE: #1, THE STALLING/TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AND #2, THE INABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM FOR SUCH A MAJOR EVENT

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40MPH PREPARING TO MERGE ONTO FREEWAY I LOST ACCELERATION POWER AND VEHICLE DECELERATED TO 5MPH NEARLY CAUSING ACCIDENT. AFTER TURNING CAR OFF AND BACK ON IT RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. LATER THAT DAY MY WIFE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. WE HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND AFTER TWO DAYS THEY WERE PREPARED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE PROBLEM DID NOT PRESENT DURING THE TEST DRIVES. AFTER REFUSING TO TAKE IT BACK UNTIL THEY FIGURED IT OUT THE NEXT DAY WE WERE TOLD THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS "BAD". 2 DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE WAS "FIXED" AND RETURNED TO US. THE VERY NEXT MORNING WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH VEHICLE LOSING PROPULSION AND DECELERATING RAPIDLY. AFTER TAKING IT BACK TO THE THE DEALERSHIP WE WERE TOLD THAT THE "NEW" THROTTLE BODY THAT WAS INSTALLED WAS ALSO "BAD". AFTER ANOTHER 2 DAYS WE PICKED UP OUR CAR AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS SO FAR.

ON A NIGHT WITH LIGHT RAIN, AFTER TRAVELING 1.5 HRS WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON, I PULLED OFF INTERSTATE EXIT TO MAKE A PHONE CALL. I DID NOT TURN ENGINE OFF. AFTER CALL I PROCEEDED TO GET BACK ON INTERSTATE, WHILE MERGING BACK ONTO INTERSTATE I ACCELERATED HARD TO ATTAIN MERGING SPEED, WHEN I MERGED SAFELY IN FRONT OF SEMI THE ENGINE SHOOK VIOLENTLY AND LOST POWER. TO AVOID BEING HIT, I JERKED VEHICLE INTO EMERGENCY LANE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS FLASHING AND THE CAR PLACED IN LIMP MODE. I TURNED THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY OF AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND EVERY THING APPEARED TO HAVE RETURNED TO NORMAL. I LATER READ THAT NIGHT THAT THE F150 WITH SAME ENGINE WAS HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FORD THE FOLLOWING MONDAY. THE SERVICE ADVISOR INFORMED ME THAT FORD HAS BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY ENGINE THAT IS IN THE FORD F150 IN HUMID AREAS. HE STATED THAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF CONDENSATION FORMS IN THE INTERCOOLER WHEN DRIVING FOR LONG PERIODS WITHOUT UTILIZING TURBO, THEN NEXT TIME YOU ACCELERATE HARD THE TURBOS SUCK ALL THE CONDENSATION INTO THE ENGINE CAUSING A MISFIRE AND PUTS ENGINE INTO LIMP MODE. AFTER A WEEK OF THEM CONTACTING FORD ENGINEERS AND RUNNING TEST, THEY TOLD ME THEY CANNOT REPEAT PROBLEM AND THE ENGINE DID NOT STORE ANY CODES IN THE ECM FROM THE PROBLEM. FORD ALSO TOLD THE DEALER THAT I'M THE ONLY PERSON WITH A 2013 EXPLORER WITH THE 3.5 ECOBOOST ENGINE THAT HAS EVER REPORTED PROBLEM. SINCE THEN I HAVE READ ABOUT TWO LAWSUITS WHICH HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST FORD INVOLVING THE ECOBOOST ENGINE AND INCLUDED THE 2013 FORD EXPLORER SPORT. APPARENTLY THIS STATEMENT IS NOT TRUE. I: LEFT THE CAR CURBSIDE BELIEVING IT WAS IN PARK; CROSSED THE SIDEWALK TO GREET A FRIEND, LEFT THE DRIVER DOOR OPEN; NOTICED THE CAR ROLLING BACKWARD TOWARD A CAR PARKED FURTHER DOWN THE CURB; RAN AFTER THE CAR; GOT INTO THE 'V' BETWEEN THE DRIVER SEAT AND DOOR; KEPT MY LEFT FOOT ON THE STREET - MY RIGHT FOOT IN THE CAR TO HIT THE BRAKE; WAS UNABLE AS THE MOMENTUM AND DOOR PUSHED ME BACKWARD; "RODE" THE CAR BACKWARD WITH 2 HANDS IN THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE, HOLDING MYSELF OFF THE ROAD. THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR RAKED UP THE LENGTH OF MY LEFT SHIN (SCRAPES AND HEMATOMAS) AND FORCED ME TO LET GO. LANDED ON THE STREET, LEFT ARM STUCK UNDER MY BACK. I WAS PINNED BETWEEN THE EDGE OF THE DOOR AND THE ASPHALT AS THE CAR DRAGGED ME DOWN THE STREET. IMPLORED MY FRIEND TO HELP. HE GAVE CHASE AS THE DOOR EDGE CUT ACROSS MY TORSO AS IT DRAGGED ME (TREMENDOUS PRESSURE ON CHEST AND LEFT SHOULDER?LONG BRUISE FROM RIGHT HIP TO LEFT SHOULDER. HE SUCCEEDED WITH DIFFICULTY AS THERE WAS NO POWER TO THE BRAKES. EXTREME PAIN FOR DAYS, COVERED WITH EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL BRUISES. MRI REVEALED A ROTATOR CUFF TEAR IN LEFT SHOULDER. ENDURED MONTHS OF PAIN/LOSS OF MOBILITY WHILE FINISHING PROJECT IN CALIFORNIA. RETURNED HOME TO CONNECTICUT, ENDURED A DIFFICULT ROTATOR CUFF + LABRUM REPAIR SURGERY. FACING MONTHS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AND A LONG, HOPEFULLY SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY. THIS WAS THE 2ND SUCH INCIDENT WITH THIS VEHICLE, THE FIRST WITHOUT TRAUMA. LUCKY TO COME OUT OF THIS AS WELL AS I DID, I'M TOLD THE NEXT IN SEQUENCE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE TIRE RUNNING OVER MY LEG. I KNOW OTHERS HAVE BEEN DISABLED + KILLED IN SUCH SCENARIOS. DRIVER EITHER STOPS EVERY 8-10 MILES ALONG SIDE BUSY HIGHWAY TO CHOP ICE OUT (TAKES ME 40 MINUTES FOR ALL FOUR TIRE OPENINGS), SLOWS HIGHWAY TRAFFIC DOWN TO 30 MPH, OR GOES TO FORD DEALER. LOCAL DEALER SEES 6-10 OF THESE VEHICLES A DAY AND CHOPS ICE OUT AT NO CHARGE AND MAKES NO WORK ORDER HISTORY. TRAVELING AT ONLY 35 MPH WHEN TRAFFIC IS GOING 55 OR 70 MPH IS DANGEROUS. STOPPING EVERY 8-15 MINUTES ALONG BUSY HIGHWAY TO CHOP ICE WITH BACK TO PASSING TRAFFIC IS DANGEROUS. DEALERS DO NOT INFORM POTENTIAL BUYERS OF THE ICE PROBLEM. FORD HAS THIS DESIGN DEFECT PROBLEM WITH MORE THAN ONE MAKE OF VEHICLE, KNOWS ABOUT THE COMPLAINTS, BUT WILL NOT SPONSOR A SOLUTION. PERSONALLY, ALONG WITH CLEARING THE ICE ON M-115 AS I GO TO A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT IN TRAVERSE CITY, CHOPPING ICE HURTS MY BONE ON BONE SHOULDERS AND THE LOWER THREE VERTEBRAE OF MY BACK THAT NO LONGER HAVE A DISC BETWEEN THEM. THE SLIPPERY SIDE OF ROAD IS DANGEROUS FOR MY TWO ARTIFICIAL HIPS AND IS SIMPLY NOT SAFE TO MY PERSON AND SLOWS DOWN SOME PASSING VEHICLES THAT MAY SLIP AND SLIDE INTO ME OR ONCOMING TRAFFIC OF THE ONLY 2 LANE HIGHWAY. NORTHERN MICHIGAN IS GETTING UNNECESSARILY MORE DANGEROUS IN THE WINTER TIME. THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE INCIDENTS AND THE INCIDENT DATE ABOVE IS ONLY APPROXIMATE.

I DROVE MY RECENTLY ACQUIRED AND NEW FORD EXPLORER SPORT FOR FIRST TIME ON THE HIGHWAY ON MARCH 4, 2013. WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS A TRUCK, I LOST CONTROL OF FRONT END TO POINT OF SWIRLING AND NEAR COLLISION WITH THE TRUCK. I DON'T CONSIDER THIS A FLUKE AS SAME HAPPENED A WHILE LATER DURING SAME HIGHWAY TRIP. I'M VERY FAMILIAR WITH HIGH HORSEPOWER PASSENGER VEHICLES AND SPORTS CARS FOR THAT MATTER. I AM ALSO VERY FAMILIAR WITH HIGHER AND ALLOWABLE SPEEDS HAVING DRIVEN AND HANDLED SPORT CARS AND PASSENGER VEHICLES ON GERMAN AUTOBAHNS WHILE LIVING IN EUROPE. IT IS MY EXPERIENCE AND BELIEF THAT THE COMBINATION OF CHARACTERISTICS (WEIGHT BALANCING IN COMBINATION WITH SIGNIFICANT HORSEPOWER, POSSIBLY LARGE TIRE SIZE, TRACTION AND FOUR WHEEL/FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ASPECTS, THRUST ETC.) MAKE THIS VEHICLE, THE FORD EXPLORER SPORT, EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON HIGHWAY WHILE ACCELERATING AT ALLOWABLE SPEEDS. A LOCAL DEALERSHIPS' EXPERT (READ: DEALER IS AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR) IN INDIANA CONFIRMED MY OBSERVATIONS AND BELIEFS AND USED TERM "SQUIRLYNESS" TO DESCRIBE VEHICLES' HANDLING WHEN ACCELERATING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. FORD INDICATES THAT VEHICLE OPERATES AS DESIGNED, I CONTENT THE DESIGN IS BAD, CAUSING THIS FORD EXPLORER SPORT VERSION TO BE VERY DANGEROUS. IN MY MIND IT IS ENTIRELY FORESEEABLE THAT ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN TO UNSUSPECTING DRIVERS OF THIS VEHICLE BASED ON THE VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO BY FORD DUE TO PRE-EMPTIVE LIABILITY ASSUMPTION IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS. I OFFERED FORD TO TAKE THIS NEW VEHICLE BACK. WITHIN A WEEK OF PURCHASING MY NEW VEHICLE, I STARTED TO ENCOUNTER A STALLING ISSUE WHEN BACKING VEHICLE. WHEN I PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND SHIFT INTO DRIVE WHILE STILL ROLLING, THE VEHICLE STALLS. I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER FORD VEHICLES AND THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH ANY OF THEM. I EVEN HAVE A 2012 FORD FOCUS THAT THIS DOES NOT OCCUR WITH. THIS HAPPENS ALMOST EVERYTIME. WHEN I GO FROM PARK TO REVERSE AND BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. IF VEHICLE DOES NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, WHEN I SHIFT INTO DRIVE, THE VEHICLE STALLS. AFTER SPENDING TWO DAYS AT THE DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE DEALERSHIP ALSO TOOK OUT A FEW NEW VEHICLES ON THEIR LOT AND THEY WERE ABLE TO REPRODUCE THIS ON THE VEHICLES ON THEIR LOT. I FEEL THIS IS A HUGE DANGER TO ANYONE WHO HAS A VEHICLE THAT DOES THIS. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THEY HAD BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE ENGINEERS AT FORD AND THAT THIS IS A NORMAL REACTION ON THIS VEHICLE. I ASKED FOR THIS IN WRITING, THEY HAVE YET TO PROVIDE ME WITH A WRITTEN EXPLANATION. *TR

THE SHIFTER CLICKS AS SOON AS I PUT THE GEAR IN PARK. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT IT IS NORMAL. I HAVE QUITE A FEW BAD EXPERIENCES WITH MY PREVIOUS CARS THAT I KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS NOT NORMAL. TAKING THE CAR AGAIN TOMORROW SINCE IT KEEPS ON HAPPENING. IT'S ONLY BEEN 4 DAYS SO THE CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS. *TR
