There is an odor in the passenger cabin. Seems unsafe
Complete failure of the water pump at 58000 miles.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle for an annual smog check, the check engine warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where a diagnostic test was performed. The diagnostic showed that the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) connected to the timing phasers had fractured and needed to be replaced. The contact was provided with an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 73,838.

Ya me marco el funcionamiento del motor
It is known that for the specific year make and model that the water pump goes out around 100,000 miles. This water pump was built as an internal water pump, which is not typical for most cars. in order to fix this part, the engine has to be taken out and lots of parts have to be disassembled Just to get to it. The part Itself is fairly cheap, but the labor cost thousands of dollars due to where it is located. Ford knowingly built this car and put that pump where it is at and therefore should be reliable to pay the cost when it is so common that this part goes out around 100,000 miles. if it is a known issue that occurs on these models frequently then it should become a recall because a failing water pump can cause significant issues within the engine and make the vehicle in operable.
intermittened starting problems, vechile wont start, clicks, then starts and power train light comes on. Waiting at a red light, press the gas and the car does not go, also when speeding up transmission slips.
There was cam phaser situation that i was never informed of when this car was purchased. I just hit 80 k and i am now having issues. It appears there is a lawsuit for this. What is ford doing to fix.
The car makes a ticking/rattle sound on cold startup. Preliminary diagnosis is the cam phasers. This is a 2017 Ford explorer with 77,000. It is the same 3.5L V6 ecoboost (GTDI) engine that was in Ford Customer Satisfaction program: 21N03. The issue mirrors tgat in the program document, but the Explorer is not covered by the program.
I periodically have unintended acceleration ; it has occurred off and on for the past two years . The Ford dealer said no faults were detected so they can't fix the problem . It most often when I am shifting into reverse then the RPMs increase dramatically and when I put it in neutral they shoot up even more . A few days ago I was putting the car into the garage , waiting for the door to open , with my foot on the brake and the shift in drive when the RPMs started to increase . Feeling the car starting to move I shifted to neutral when the RPMs shot up tremendously . This is a dangerous situation where someone can get injured or killed . Ford should be able to correct the problem !!!
At 28,000 miles, the vehicle emitted black smoke from the exhaust. Despite the mechanic’s efforts to identify the issue, no diagnostic codes were detected. Currently, the vehicle has accumulated 100,000 miles. The engine suddenly lost the ability to accelerate beyond 20 miles per hour. After several months of repairs involving multiple turbo replacements, it was determined that the engine was severely damaged and should have been replaced over 50,000 miles ago. The engine was subsequently replaced, but only a year later, it failed again. After replacing the first engine, the vehicle’s performance deteriorated significantly. The vehicle required another visit to the shop for several months, resulting in another engine replacement. Over the course of several months, the vehicle lost all power and exhibited difficulty shifting into reverse. Consequently, it failed to reverse and was involved in an accident.
I am submitting this complaint regarding a recurring turbocharger issue in my 2017 Ford Explorer Sport (VIN: [XXX] ). In April 2024, I was forced to replace the turbocharger system at a cost of approximately $2,500. Despite the repair, my vehicle continues to have serious performance issues. Most recently, the check engine light returned, and a diagnostic scan from O’Reilly Auto Parts showed error code P219A – Bank 1 Air/Fuel Ratio Imbalance. This code indicates that the engine is still not functioning correctly—pointing to a likely underlying or unresolved defect. During the initial failure, oil leaked extensively into the engine bay and burned off in thick white smoke while I was driving. It was a serious safety concern, and the cause was consistent with Ford’s existing recall for this engine (NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V925000), which was limited to the Police Interceptor Utility model despite the civilian Sport version using the same 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine and components. It is extremely concerning that my vehicle—outside of the official recall range—suffered the same turbo failure and now continues to show problems even after a costly repair. Either the mechanic’s initial repair was incomplete, or the core design flaw that caused the issue in the first place is still at play, meaning this problem may continue to repeat itself. I respectfully request that: 1.Ford expand the recall to include vehicles with the same components and failures, regardless of their designation. 2.NHTSA investigate the scope of this issue across the broader 2017 Explorer Sport lineup. 3.Ford provide reimbursement or support for the costly repair, which has not resolved the issue. 4.Ford issue a technical service bulletin or revised part guidance if this is an ongoing engineering issue. I am happy to provide full documentation, photos, and service records if needed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I brought my vehicle from a used certified dealer at the time of test drive I asked why such a rough transition when going from gear to gear and I was told it was the ECOBoost engine packed with power. Fast forward after multiple repairs and recalls on this vehicle I’ve made it to my breaking point when my SUV shut down as I was turning onto a busy street coming from my son’s school. The engine literally cut off almost causing a head on collision. This idle function is extremely dangerous. I had multiple belts repaired and many things checked after my car overheated and couldn’t find the culprit. One mechanic explained my fan wasn’t working to assist in cooling off the engine and the vents/grill in front of car was shut causing the engine to over heat. After opening the vents and connecting the car to diagnostic machine there were no codes to fix. Over the next month my suv would become significantly worse rattling when I stop at a red light almost drifting into a car in front of me. No longer overheating but now feeling the car physically shifting gears as if I drive a stick shift and I have an automatic transmission. After doing careful research I learned was some recalls on the fan and eco boost engine explaining the same issues that I’am currently having. Don’t mention fixing the recalls because all the certified dealers are 2-3 weeks behind on fixing and diagnosing these same vehicles. They won’t loan you a car while being repaired which is another cost associated with this vehicle. Please look into this ecoboost engine and overheating issues. Also I was told my engine would go soon do the oxygen intake not exchanging enough oxygen causing oil to push into spark plugs and other parts of the engine it doesn’t belong. This SUV is a complete lemon and should be recalled right away before someone dies from this awful feature. Just last week I saw someone on the interstate with my same vehicle stopping mid traffic. This is dangerous!!!
The vehicles engine has known defects that involves failure of the timing belt and water pump causing enteral damage that sends metal shards enter the oil and causes complete engine failure even with immediate attention when the vehicles engine sensors Alert the driver to an engine problem. After the water pump and or timing belt are changed the engine is already damaged beyond repair. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Once the microscopic metal shards enter the oil, filters are clogged and sensors inconsistently malfunction The engine does not accelerate appropriately and then jolts into acceleration The engine dies at idle Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I have had the vehicle at the dealership 4 times and had 3 other body shops all confirm the same problem Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes - Dec 2024 - the vehicle was overheating and the water pump and timing belt were immediately replaced
Own a 2017 Ford Explorer 2.3L EcoBoost with 116K miles, out of the blue the vehicle started to overheat the engine, with no coolant left in the reservoir. Took it to a mechanic who stated that the engine is not that old and that it was unsure of why the head gasket was blown. It is believed by many including a Class Action Law Suite that Ford is aware of the possible overheating issues with their EcoBoost engines.
Engine block timing plate cover has a defect crack in it causing an oil leak and fire hazard.
The engine did not start and had a burning smell coming out. The SUV was towed to a Ford dealer to find out the engine block has to be replace. The SUV has been well maintain through out the years of ownership. It has 84000.00 miles on it. After some research, my SUV is not the only one that this has happened. It seems FORD explorer with an ecoboost engine have this issue. 2017 Ford Explore with an EcoBoost engine-ENGINE LONG BLOCK AND RETESTING (VERIFIED CONCERN AND PERFORMED DIAGNOSIS, FOUND COOLANT BOTTLE EMPTY AND ENGINE TO NOT CRANK BUT WHEN TURNING KEY THE ENGINE ATTEMPTS TO CRANK BUT STOPS, HAND VERIFIED THAT CRANK SHAFT WAS LOCKED AND FOUND HYDRO-LOCKED ENGINE DUE TO COOLANT INTRUSION) Fail $11,690.90
At 40,000 miles my head gasket failed, causing the engine to have to be replaced. This has now happened AGAIN at 112,000 miles. In reading on line, this is a common problem for the design of this engine. How can a car engine have to be replaced TWICE? This seems to be a significant design flaw and safety issue.
Coolant on garage floor. Researched and found common among this engine, Called dealer. Said do not drive and get to dealer. Can cause engine seizure and breakdown if internal coolant leakage has started. Dealer stated they see at least one a week of this water pump problem.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal clunking sound, went into LIMP Mode, and failed to exceed 25 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact shifted to reverse(R), but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact called the independent mechanic whom the vehicle was purchased from, but no assistance was provided. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed with catastrophic transmission damage. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. There was no warranty coverage on the vehicle for the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.

The engine block (2.3L ecoboost) has a coolant intrusion into cylinder 3 causing it to miss fire and overheat. This problem almost left my wife and child stranded on the side of the road. If she hadn't had a safe place to pull over to allow the vehicle to cool down it could have had a catastrophic failure while driving. The dealer pressure tested the coolant system and showed leak in the coolant system. They then removed the number 3 spark plug and scoped the cylinder finding coolant inside cylinder. This coolant leak caused the miss fire and the overheating. Prior to failure the only thing that happened was that the number 3 cylinder had a miss fire. At this time the spark plugs and ingnition coil pack was replaced only to have the problem start up again a few days later. The number 3 and 4 ignition coil pack was then switched and codes cleared. The miss fire for number 3 then showed up again. At this time we set an appointment up with the dealer to look at the issue. Two days before the apointment the engine overheated. We were able to get the vehilce to the dealer and they diagnosed the coolant intrusion into the number 3 cylinder. Prior to the over heat the only warning was the miss fire for number 3 cylinder. No other warnings or codes were available for the engine. Upon researching this issue I found that it was a known issue and that Ford had an extended powertrain warranty for some customers under the customer satisfaction program. However, upon contacting Ford they said that my vehicle was not listed as a candadate for this extended warranty option.
At 115,000 miles, had a total engine failure. The engine was a 3.5 twin turbo eco boost. Engine not repairable and would need replacing. The blue book of the vehicle was 15K. The engine replacement cost from Ford was 18K. Overheard the mechanic call these engines on the Explorer, EXPLODERS. Apparently this is common and should have been a concern, but not mentioned to the consumers. Any other details can received from Bill Utter Ford Denton Texas.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that after the battery had been replaced, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was jumpstarted several times. The contact stated while driving 60-70 MPH and attempting to overtake another vehicle, the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact returned to the initial lane. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times while driving. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked in front of the residence, the contact noticed that coolant had leaked from the vehicle onto the ground. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine was overheating. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a Chevrolet dealer, where the contact was informed that there was no coolant in the coolant reservoir and the mechanic determined that the water pump was leaking. The dealer added coolant and water to the vehicle. The contact stated that the engine continued to overheat while driving. The vehicle was taken to Christian Brothers, where it was diagnosed that the water pump and the timing chain needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the water pump was replaced. The vehicle was towed to another independent mechanic, where the contact was informed that the timing chain and the water pump needed to be replaced at the same time. The vehicle was being repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the independent mechanics and the dealer had informed the contact that the failures were common. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

I was driving my 2017 Ford Explorer on 10/14/22 and the engine started shaking aggressively randomly. So, I took it to our local Mechanic shop . They said that from the engine shaking, it had broken the engine mounts, and it had an internal problem. I had paid $200 to fix the engine mount. So, they had a service bulletin and said Ford should fix it for free because it’s a known problem. They had provided me with the service bulletin 22-2287. My husband took the copy of the bulletin to ford, and brought the car. Explained that it already had other recalls on it that needed to be fixed and showed him the service bulletin. He asked if it would be covered and the guy said “It should be”. Then, we proceed to get a call the next day that it’s not covered because it hasn’t “officially” been recalled and it would be$4200 to fix. Even though the engine is going to ruin the parts in a few years because it’s the engine causing the other parts to overheat. So, I told them I wanted to get a second opinon, and they charged me “diagnostic fee” of $213.76, even tho they told my husband the diagnostic fee if it wasn’t covered would be $80. So, after months of fighting ford to make things right,I had the car towed to a local transmission shop , and had them repair it for 4,655.. I go to pick it up, and it’s still shaking. So bring it back, and they fix it again, Well, it’ still not fixed. Then, they fix it again, and I pick it up, the transmission isn’t running correctly.I have been without a working car since 10/14/22. So, now they are fixing it again and putting another brand new transmission in. Ford needs to be held responsible. This is a known issue, and could lead to someone getting into a terrible accident when the engine falls through the car, and could kill someone. The engine itself it heating up other components of the car, and ruining it. As of today, 02/27/2025 the transmission is starting to have problems again! When I am driving and come to a stop it wont accelerate
Check engine light came on while driving on highway. I had a OBD reader with me and plugged it in. Came back with a cylinder misfire. Took it to a local mechanic to get new plugs and coils. Mechanic cleared the code but the light came back on. I took it to another mechanic that I trust who found coolant in the oil due to cracked heads. Mechanic gave me information about this 3.5l motor being known to have this problem to take back to dealer. 3 months of waiting and having to argue that despite being out of warranty, they knew this motor was bad and should replace it. Ford finally put a new motor in. Drove for 6 more months and just had the check engine light come back. Cylinder misfire again. They shouldn't be allowed to sell this motor knowing that it can leave people stranded. This is criminal. Will never buy a Ford again. They KNOW this motor is trash but keep letting unsuspecting consumers foot the bill be cause they assume it's a one off. Shame!
1. The cylinder head gasket (2.3L Eng Standard EJ7Z-6079-F) had cracked due to a problem that my mechanic said was common for engines of this make / year. 2. If this had not been fixed could have damaged the cylinder head and totaled the vehicle, is my understanding. 3. Yes 4. No 5. I noticed the engine felt different and the check engine light was sporadically on and off. First occurred Nov, 2024.
Was driving my vehicle on the highway when it start chugging and died. Had to act Fast to get off the highway as there was no shoulder nor warning. I had the vehicle towed to my shop and they confirmed the engine was done. The water pump gave out while driving with no warning and took the engine out. It appears after doing some research Ford has 2 years of Explorers (2016 & 2017) that they did an internal water pump. So when the water pump goes out it dumps all the antifreeze into the oil pan. There are many complaints out online about this same exact thing and Ford will do nothing about it. I was stuck with a $12,500.00 bill for a vehicle that has 73,989 yes that is right not even 75K on the car. Ford is a joke and this definitely a safety concern as it just dies with no warning and takes the engine out. Something needs to be done before people get hurt as all these 2 years worth of Explorers will have this same issue. Whomever designed a waterpump on the inside of the engine should be investigated. I will upload the estimate as that is what I have on me. Be I do have the repair bill at home as we just got it back after 5 weeks
Car was misfiring, oil in the spark plugs. Took it to our mechanic and basically told us we need a new engine. The car in a 2017 with 143,000 miles. There was coolant in cylinder 1 of the engine. Mechanic said cylinder walls are not properly sealed causing the head gasket to fail repeatedly even after replacement.
Transmission is not shifting correcting. Will be traveling down the road and loses power, loses it's acceleration. When trying to proceed after making a stop at a light, car will not go. Bucks hard when putting in reverse. I heard there was a recall on the torque converter's awhile back, but I never received any notification about it. Now that I know, the ford dealerships are telling me there are no recalls for this.
I have a 2017 Ford Explorer with a water pump that needs replacing per a Ford dealership. It has 59K. It should last at least 150k. There should be a recall as there are thousands of these vehicles with the internal water pump. Apparently it's a problem if they are no longer making them internal. I want to file a complaint and would like some type of compensation.
Water pump defect with my 2017 Ford Explorer XLT V6. This vehicle has a significant design flaw related to the water pump, which is located inside the engine cover. Recently, the water pump in my vehicle failed, the signal warning light turned on and indicated that the thermostat reaching high engine temperatures and warning the engine could overheat. The failure of the water pump can lead to engine overheating, which could cause the vehicle to break down unexpectedly, putting my safety and the safety of others at risk, especially while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by both a Ford dealer and an independent service center. Ford acknowledges this issue and that the water pump is prone to failure approximately every 100,000 miles. The repair costs amount to over $4,000. This exorbitant cost is due to the labor-intensive process required to access the water pump, owing to its placement within the engine cover. The cost of the repair is disproportionately high and places an undue financial burden on consumers.
Brought car in for 100,000 mile tune up on 11/21. On 11/30, used the heater for the first time since having tune up done and the heater was blowing only cold air. Brought into ford today and was told that the water pump has a leak and needs to be replaced at a cost of $5,000. Car has 100,550 miles on it, mostly only driven on city roads and not freeway.
2.3L 4 cylinder engine has coolant intrusion causing a blown head gasket and requiring a super expensive repair that should be falling to Ford not the consumer. This is a design flaw and should be fixed ASAP. Coolant should not be intruding and leaking. This engine has around 76,000 miles and has only been owned for 1 year. Very disappointed in this.
I was driving , when I heard a strange noise. Luckily I was about a mile from work. I listened more, Checked my check engine lights, as I was passing the local ford dealership. They were not on. I proceeded to the stop light. My car began to miss. I had just put gas in, I assumed it was bad gas, still no engine lights. I made it 3 blocks it started missing bad, going through an intersection. Now its making a bubbling noise. No check engine, but the heat gage is half the way up. I stop in a driveway. put it in park for 15 minutes, to cool it down. I restart my car, I move it 4 yards to park along the street. Now my car will not move at all. We had it towed to the dealership. My engine is ruined. I did not drive my car more then a mile after the noise of what the dealership said, was system blowing up, that's in the engine. As a result this has blown my engine and I now need a new one. We had just been on vacation from Ohio to the Sault Saint Marie, Michigan. My husband checked fluids, added a little of both oil and Antifreeze before we left on Oct 17, 24. There was no antifreeze in the oil or oil in the antifreeze. We were only back a day when this happened . When the radiator blew up, it never set off my check engine lights. Even when the vehicle could no longer move, there were no check engine lights on. My vehicle was making a bubbling sound, yet my hot gages never went completely to hot. At the most the were about 3/4 of the way. The radiator blew and in a few short minutes my engine completely locked, this happening within a mile. Lucky for me, I was in a small town, when it occurred. Its been 3 weeks and I am still waiting on an engine. I have been told its because so many of the explores are having the same issue. I have to come up with 10,000.00 to replace the engine of a vehicle I still owe on. It just turned 100,000 miles in Michigan
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact noticed smoke coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened and the contact was referred to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 100,685.

In 2022 I had the water pump replaced on my 2017 Ford Explorer as it was leaking and i was getting fluids into the oil tank. The mechanic advised that it could destroy the entire engine and cause massive safety issues when driving. Had repairs done at Forder Dealership. On September 26, 2024, I took my 2017 Ford Explorer into the Ford Dealership for another issue and found out that my water pump was cracked again, leaking antifreeze, and that it needed to be replaced. Again, if not replaced massive safety issue could occur when driving. Earlier in September when driving the vehicle on the highway the entire vehicle shut down, lost the power steering, and the vehicle literally died in the parking lot of a tire shop. Replaced the alternator but still had issues with the engine after the replacement which now I learned could have been from the antifreeze leaking out of the water pump. Ford will not cover the replacement of the water pump because it 9 months past the warranty.
Engine shake due for engine mounting damage on transmission and engine mount 3 xplorer 2017 was at the same shop same problem
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle lost motive power, prompting the contact to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway. After a visual inspection of the engine compartment, the contact observed that the oil dipstick had been ejected, allowing the orifice to leak oil onto the engine. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was able to determine that the engine was building excessive internal pressure but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer but was not yet diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 121,000.

Driving on the highway heard large rattling noise coming from engine loss of power engine light came on battery light came on no acceleration cause to slow down on highway fortunately I was able to get to shoulder had it towed to service shop had p0012 code tensioner may have broken off on timing belt causing low oil pressure and causing engine rattling noise and engine shut down but service garage don’t do that type of work
While going up a steep hill or mountain the car starts to over heat when you stop pressing the gas the car will start to go back down in to cooler numbers and you can start driving again with no issues until you hit another hill.. car breaks wear out excessively also the car jerks when going into gear to shift
2017 Ford Explorer 2.3L Ecoboost with 77,000 miles. Check engine light came on and I scanned the car for a cylinder 3 misfire. Changed all spark plugs and coil packs. Cleared the code and Cylinder 3 misfire is showing again. Overheating while idle. Car appears to be gulping down coolant with no sign of leaks.
Vehicle’s coolant over temperature warning light comes on only on highway and vehicles slows, which can cause a crash. However, temp gauge fluctuates quickly going back and forth from normal to hot.

There was a mechanical failure with the internal water pump that caused my engine to seize and render the vehicle non-operational. The water pump and motor have both been inspected by a certified mechanic who has deemed it as such. The vehicle could have broken down on the highway but I was one of the lucky ones that it did not. There was no warning of my engine being bad until the water pump was replaced. The weep hole in the pump caused coolant to enter my oil.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to AutoZone, where it was diagnosed that the crankshaft solenoid had failed. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that there were metal shavings inside the engine. The dealer determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 141,595.

I have replaced all the starter coil packs in my engine and still have the same problem the codes read misfiring on multiple cylinders wich causes the car to lose power and pull back on the transmission while pushing on the gas pedal this is an ongoing problem
Vehicle began leaking coolant. No warning lights came on or anything. Took into repair center and they advised that the water pump needed to be replaced. Over $3,000 to repair and the car is barely over 100,000 miles. Seems to be a major defect as I have read many complaints about this issue.
I was driving on the highway at around 60 mph, I accelerated to pass a car and then the "power" just cut off. The check engine light came on and having my foot on the gas did nothing and the car began to decelerate. Then it started to cycle between kicking in and cutting off for a few seconds, as if it was "catching". Then as I moved over towards the shoulder for safety it resumed normal operation.
My transmission went out at 70k miles. Ford told me it was the engine causing the transmission to seize but since they didn’t have an official recall on it, they wouldn’t fix it. It cost me 5k to fix and they had to get 3 different transmissions from ford because the first two were defective. I was out of a car for 8 months

- Transmission/torque convertor has and is failing. Results in lack of acceleration during launch, sluggish vehicle operation and shudder - Known issue with this make/model/year of vehicle. Failure of the above began at 40,000 some miles and is presently not driveable at only 67,000 miles without an $8-$10,000 repair for a new transmission. - Confirmed with dealer the above issue and is in writing and submitted Case #CAS-47518676-K5Y6Y7 with Ford directly. Located letter sent to dealerships regarding this very issue dated 10/2020. - Vehicle has not been in any accidents, but am receiving a "warning" light indicating failure.

Since owning vehicle with around 60k, 2 serpentine belts have been replaced, high pressure hose replaced, water pump is now failing. Looking online, this vehicle has been plagued with issues and no recalls? A failing water pump from 2011 models on? Not sure how a car can have over $10k in problems and no recalls.
Head gasket failure allowing coolant to leak into cylinder 1. Starts rough, but could result in lost of power or engine failure while driving. Ford dealer has confirmed the issue and said this shouldn't happen to a car with only 77,500 miles on it (2017 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD 2.3L Ecoboost 4 cyl. engine). Have to repair or replace engine depending upon the extend of damage.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the odor of burning oil was present coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the "Power Take Off Unit" was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 76,115.

The water pump is in the engine on this vehicle. You have no clue if it is leaking and it can cause your vehicle's engine to blow. It is also a very very costly repair for a water pump.
Issue with CAM Phasers when looking into the problem I noticed there was a recall for other 3.5 EcoBoost engines on other models but not on a Ford Explorer with the same engine.
Exhaust fumes entering inside vehicle when idling and driving on the road. Must drive with windows open and still cannot drive for over a few miles. Get a headache and effects lungs. Vehicle is now parked and cannot use. Exhaust is leaking near engine. Looks like a cracked manifold. Unsafe to use. Date this occurred is an estimate because I do not know how long this has been a problem. There are other 2017 models with the same issue.

Car wouldn't start. All the water had run out due to coolent leak near water pump and in finding it they found leak near front engine mount. These are problems that other 2017 explorer owners have also complained about online. In addition, Kirkland Ford stated they are backed up on repairing the toe link and roof repair due to lack of certified mechanics. The 2017 whole vehicle should have been recalled due to the cheap parts used which has caused me to continually go in to have recalls fixed. While there they end up causing more issues causing me thousands in repair bills. I have scheduled with independent car repair shop for them to give me estimate of repairing the above items for January 10 the first date they had available.
Car dies repeatedly while on the road driving and also while parked. Car has errors on dashboard when attempting to turn on, which I have a video of. First mechanic was able to replicate issue once and got some scan tool codes but he said after that, they all cleared out and he wasn't able to replicate. Car was given back to us, drove to store died and it wouldn't start in parking lot. Mechanic sent tow truck, car started when tow truck arrived. Took car to Ford, tech unable to replicate, car returned to us. Car died once again, which is when I took the error video and took the car back to Ford and showed service rep the video. Ford still unable to figure out the issue. We told Ford to keep the car because it isn't safe to drive until we find and fix the issue. Car has been in mechanic and Ford for about 4 months total.
I experienced the expulsion of coolant underneath the hood of my vehicle in the parking lot / driveways the past month or so. I took this into my mechanic and they diagnosed with water pump failure, need of timing chain assessment and 12 hours of expected labor. This issue has been recalled in Canada, but not here in the U.S. This is a significant amount of money to fix this and a safety issue as this vehicle is often driven in rural areas late at night. If inspection upon request is needed I can make it available.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to coast to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle was able to restart. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 144,000.

The car started overheating while on my way home from a trip. I had to get a wrecker to haul it in. Ford offered no help. It was the water pump. Milage at the time was 103,000, Cost to fix $3000. So no Thanksgiving for me this year.
My 2017 Ford Explorer XLT - eco boost (72,524 miles) vehicle was misfiring (running really rough) at startup the last week or so and the engine light came on and stayed on. The vehicle was serviced in July of this year and there was no mention of the problem. Upon paid inspection today (11/10/23) and diagnosis at my local AAA Car repair service they reported the following: Engine code P0303 - no 3 misfire. The no 3 plug is very clean, which is not good (as it likely means a leak of coolant from head gasket). Upon pulling the number 3 plug, it was confirmed that there was a coolant leak from the Head Gasket. AAA car repair indicated that this was not normal for a car with this low of mileage and shouldn't happen this soon. They said they did not do this type of work and advised I check with Ford corporate to see if there was a recall or extended warranty. I called Ford Corporate, and they did not see any recalls or information that could help with the repair, and they advised I reach out to the NHTSA to see if there might be other reports or investigations underway and if not, to open one. The vehicle has only been inspected by the AAA Service garage and is now back home in my garage and available for inspection upon request. NOTE: in researching this issue on line, I did find several articles and links of videos with this problem. There are safety issues, especially when pulling out in traffic or accelerating, as the vehicle sputters and does not run smoothly or go as fast as expected and could cause an accident.
Mechanic confirmed water pump failure. Explorer was brought to mechanic for issue with heater. Upon inspection by mechanic, the coolant was low. Mechanic filled the coolant and left the vehicle idling. Water was seen leaking from undercarriage. Vehicle cannot be safely driven until water pump is replaced. Minimum cost of $2000 to complete repair.
THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER AT TIMES. WHEN GOING TO ANOTHER LANE OR PULLING OUT IN TRAFFIC, IT WILL SURGE LOOSING POWER. I NOTICED IT SHORLTY AFTER PURCHASING IT. IGNORED IT FOR A LONG TIME BUT HAVE HAD TO DRIVE IT MORE LATELY AND FEEL UNSAFE DOING SO. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY ANYONE. IT HAS LESS THAN 25,000 MILES ON ITAND THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE
While driving cross country, driver began to experience lag in acceleration and delayed shifting. In some cases, noted transmission was not down shifting. At destination, the check engine light came on and we took the vehicle into a Ford dealership for repair. It should be noted that there was a low coolant light just prior to the trip and we filled up approximately a quart to bring it back to serviceable limits. The dealer called after several hours to explain the car would need a new 2.3L EcoBoost engine and new Automatic transmission. The engine had evidence of coolant in the engine/oil. The transmission was diagnosed to have a failure of an internal component. The vehicle was been regularly serviced for the 79000 miles with no previous warning lights. We currently have the vehicle in our garage trying to decide if it's worth fixing for $25000 quoted by the dealer.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle jerked. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the coil and the water pump needed to be replaced. The coil was replaced; however, the water pump was not replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while parked with the engine idling the message "Engine Too Hot to Operate" was displayed and the engine temperature gauge indicated that the engine had overheated. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the water pump and timing chain were faulty and needed to be replaced. The water pump and timing chain were replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 132,000.

WATER PUMP FAILURE. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. BY THE TIME I COULD PULL OFF THE FREEWAY (1 MINUTE) THE ENGINE HAD STALLED AND THE CAR WOULDN'T START. TOWED TO REPAIR SHOP AND LEARNED THE PUMP FAILURE HAD ALLOWED WATER AND OIL TO MIX THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE. METAL SHAVINGS WERE FOUND IN THE ENGINE. ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. TOTAL COST BEFORE THE VEHICLE WAS READY: OVER $11,000
I noticed that I had to refill the coolant/water on my car because it was low. When I got out of my work I noticed there was water on the floor, but I didn't think of anything because my car was doing fine. When I was almost home I noticed the car fans were like trying to compensate for the heat, but when I look at my dash. My car was overheating with the engine light. I parked it and noticed the water I put this morning was all gone and the car was still leaking. Come to find out it was the water pump and the engine.
2017 Ford Explorer with 114,000 miles. Engine coolant light came on while driving. The car was taken to a Ford Dealer and diagnosed with a failed water pump. As the water pump is installed inside of the engine this is now a major repair and if not caught early, can cause permanent damage to the engine. This failure can cause the engine to stop leaving you stranded. Currently having the engine repaired at Ford Auto Nation in Tustin Ca.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer for routine maintenance and was informed by the service technician that the water pump was leaking coolant into an engine cylinder. The contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Coolant was found to be infiltrating cylinders 2 & 3 of the engine. The engine was idling roughly and just about died before the check engine light came on. The service center did a pressure check and used a bore scope to confirm that there was coolant in the cylinders. My understanding of this problem is that the engine begins to misfire as coolant and oil mix and the cylinder walls start and other components deteriorate. When deterioration is bad enough the engine can quit. This can happen at any time including at high speeds on the highway. I'm not totally sure how long the rough idling had been going on, but the incident where the engine almost died and the check engine light came on was at about 80,000 miles. My guess is that the rough idling started around 70,000 miles -- give or take. Ford has not yet done a diagnostic teardown to determine how the coolant is infiltrating the cylinders, but it is a known problem for other sizes of the Ecoboost engine. I have the 2.3L Ecoboost. There was a recall on the 1.6L Ecoboost and there is a class action lawsuit for the 1.5L, 1.6L, and 2.0L versions of the engine.
The water pump went bad which cost me 1500 dollars and the shop whom done it had replaced 15 water pumps on the exact make and model car as mine this year!
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 65-70 MPH, the engine seized. The contact was able to veer to the side of the roadway. The contact stated that upon attempting to restart the vehicle, the message "No Oil Pressure" was displayed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the head gasket was blown, causing coolant and oil to mix. The dealer diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 141,000.

OVERHEATING WARNING ILLUMINATED, RESULTED IN VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN WHILE BRIEFLY PULLING OVER IN A PARKING LOT TO GET DIRECTIONS TO A SPECIFIC HOSPITAL ENTRANCE. STOP TO SHUT DOWN, ABOUT 1 MIN. THIS HAS OCCURRED A TOTAL OF 7 OTHER TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST 12 MONTHS, BEGINNING WITH THE FIRST ONE IN JULY OF 2022. MY WIFE WAS IDLING WHILE AWAITING TO PICK UP THE KIDS FROM A GYMNASTICS CLASS. OVERHEATING WARNING ILLUMINATED, RESULTING IN THE VEHICLE SHUTTING DOWN. A MECHANIC WE KNOW WAS ALSO THERE AWAITING HIS CHILDREN AND DISCOVERED VERY LOW COOLANT LEVEL. IT WAS FILLED & THINGS SEEMED FINE UNTIL THIS SPRING, WHERE IT IS A BI-WEEKLY OCCURRENCE. COOLANT BOTTLES ARE ON STAND-BY AS WE HAVE NO OTHER OPTION. EVEN IF THE WATER PUMP IS FAILING, THIS IS ALL WE HAVE TO WORK WITH. OUR OTHER VEHICLE JUST SHUT DOWN MID-DRIVE IN MARCH. IT WAS TOWED TO THE MECHANIC. HERE WE ARE NEARLY 5 MONTHS LATER AND HE DOESN’T HAVE A GUESS AT WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT ACTUALLY BE. THAT VEHICLE, A 2012 FORD FOCUS SE.
When driving the vehicle, it displayed a dashboard message "Engine Coolant Over Temperature". The vehicle was brought to the local Ford dealer where it is routinely serviced. Grapevine Ford identified that the water pump needed replacing. The part was $419 but it required 14 hours of labor to install it for a labor charge of $3,425. While the part failure isn't common but it can happen, 14 hours of labor to replace it is the real issue This is clearly an extremely serious design issue. What can the consumer do? A vehicle is needed & the repair was authorized. Reviewing the NHTSA website, multiple similar complaints were found. However, none of them referenced the extremely high labor charge to replace the water pump, which is the real issue.
For the third time in six months I had an unintended acceleration when stopped and shifting from drive to reverse or the other way. The rpm’s go way up, if I didn’t have my foot on the brake the vehicle may have crashed, injured someone, etc. Ford dealer was not helpful at all, saying they had no prior reports. I had same problem on previous Explorer but traded it in.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic, where the vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the head gasket had blown/failed coolant leaked into cylinder # 4. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Ford Corporate was contacted and informed of the problem as dealership did not manufacture the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with TSB: 19-2346; however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.

Car overheating, coolant holder looks empty, I added coolant and it overflowed. Once I opened the air tank all the coolant came up from below and over flowed. Took to Ford of West Covina and they said I have a water pump leak. Yet I see no leaking ever in my garage or driveway. Car is fairly new and I always take it to get serviced on time and I am very caring to my cars. I took my car for service on 2/23/2023 to Ford of West Covina where I have always gone to and they didn’t tell me anything was wrong with my vehicle, but now looking at the after visit summary paper work it says coolant leak. The service team told me my vehicle was in good condition when I picked my car up.
2017 Ford Explorer 92,361 miles. Car started over heating going 45 miles per hour. Pulled over and then had car towed to the mechanic. Mechanic said water pump was done and coolant had leaked in to the engine and engine was destroyed. Car needs a whole new engine replacement. This is happening with many Ford Explorers and Ford refuses to recall them or do anything about it!
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the engine overheating message was displayed on the instrument panel. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the coolant level was low, and added coolant to the reservoir. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics and was informed that the water pump had failed, causing a coolant leak. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

1 week ago the check engine light came on as the car was very heated. Coolant was used and the warning went off. A few days later the car was taken to have an oil change and we realized the coolant level was low and there was old coolant fluid dried onto the underneath of the car and a bead of coolant seen. The car was taken to the garage and a leak was found in the water pump, with coolant leaking from the seep whole. The water pump is located underneath the engine which requires an expensive long process to remove the engine and other parts to fix. The car is only 6 years old with 83K miles and a major component has failed which can not be easily accessed. The water pump has now been moved to another location in more recent models. There is a class law suit in process involving many people to address this design flaw and safety hazard. One website alone has over 100 people complaining about this issue with many cars seizing completely on roads whilst in use. There is no recall currently for this problem but dealerships, auto shops are aware of the problem.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced unintended surging and engine revving. During the failure the driver had difficulty stopping the vehicle while depressing the brake pedal. The contact stated that the failure had occurred while driving at various speeds, and also while the vehicle was stationary and idling. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 35,000.

Own a 2017 Ford Explorer, bought new. Took into Ford today for routine maintenance, rotate tires, Oil & Filter. Vehicle has approximately 85,000 miles on it. Upon completion tech advised me they found a radiator leak towards the front of the car. When asked if it was radiator or something else, tech advised they wouldn't know until vehicle was broken down to find where leak was from. Took to independent mechanic to check the issue. Faulty water pump was found to be causing the problem. Reservoir was found empty. No warning lights ever came on. Repairs are being done and am notifying Ford.
My suv begin to run hot and instantly water begins to boil and I was trying to pull off the road immediately.with no warning from the forward collision as a car hit me. Got a quote from many dealerships or mechanics who says that the water pump failed and is a common problem with my suv and it quoted 2500 with a two week time frame because the water pump is built inside the engine no one wants to work on it due to risk. Help!
Both turbos failed and so did the water pump. Less than 90,000 miles. When the turbos failed, there was smoke from the tailpipes. Then there was noise under the hood. When the water pump failed, there was water leaking under the vehicle. Yes, the problem was diagnosed and fixed by the Ford dealership. One of the turbos was fixed last year. The water pump was fixed in December. The other turbo is waiting to be fixed because Ford changed the part due to manufacturing issues and we are currently going on 3 months without a vehicle. The turbos or water pump failure would have been a catastrophic engine failure at some point. Apparently this is a known issue with the 3.5L EcoBoost engines, but Ford has not issued a recall. Fortunately I have a Blue Oval Certified warranty on my Explorer, so the repair is covered. There were no lamps or warning lights during the part failures. I did not let the car overheat when the water pump was failing.
Need a new transmission when I need to press the gas it won’t go it like I’m just pushing the gas in park
Vehicle began overheating and repair shop advised it appears to be a water pump issue. The vehicle only has 107000 miles on it. Was quoted $2500-3000 for repair due to pump being built into the engine.
Pulled my Explorer into the driveway because the temperature gauge came on While driving up my hill. Then when pulling in the driveway there was fluid leaking throughout my driveway and then there was a big puddle. I had it towed to a local service station in my town and I just got the estimate. The water pump was no good. I have only 74,599 miles on my SUV. I just found out that in the past (2011-2016) Explorers had issues with the water pumps. I brought it to a local auto repair station because I couldn't get my explorer in for 3 weeks at a local dealership.
Internal water pump failed. Dealer indicated that it needs replacement at a cost of $4,000. This is a know issue for Ford Explorer models for multiple years going back to 2011 including the model year 2017. Ford has not recalled the vehicles with this safety issue. Vehicles can overheat and cause engine damage including my location in the Phoenix Desert.
The transmission would slip and/or lag. This started around 65k miles. It was reported to the dealer, they couldn’t reproduce it. Then at 101k miles the engine started vibrating when in gear and idling. Motor mounts were replaced, but the problem persisted. Eventually got the entire transmission replaced.
Coolant intrusion into the motor causing the motor to overheat Ford recommend new motor but will not take responsibility of the cost. There was a recall on the 2.0 motor but not on the 2.3 and it is the same design of motor. The problem is the way Ford design the motor the new ones after 2017 are designed differently.
Water pump leaking
Driving on busy interstate at approximately 55mph there was a sudden loss of acceleration ability and check engine light came on, white smoke coming from exhaust. Car was taken to dealership and diagnosed with bank 1 broken turbocharger turbine wheel, and bank 2 turbocharger turbine wheel damaged requiring replacement of both turbocharger turbine wheels, both catalytic converter assemblies, o2 sensors, tailpipe, flex pipe, gaskets. Estimated repair cost greater than $9000. Mechanic at dealership reports this is a very common problem with this vehicle. Vehicle at 88k miles with routine maintenance and no collisions, similar recall for other years of same make and model
I own a 2017 Ford Explorer XLT with 2.3L Eco Boost. It was recently diagnosed with coolant leaking into the cylinder. I was told there is nothing that can be done about it other than buying a new engine. Since August 2022, this car has had the "check engine" light on and has been to several different mechanics and 2 different Ford dealers before finally being diagnosed. After researching this issuer, I have learned that Ford has known about this issue since 2010 and chosen to do nothing about it. I have been driving this vehicle around, not knowing that this problem could cause the engine to catch on fire, endangering all the lives of my family! Ford should take responsibility for this issue and replace the engine!
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that on numerous occasions while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant was leaking into cylinder #3, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

After purchasing a 2017 Ford Explorer Eco Boost (65K miles) it was only 6 -7 months (yes months) later that I would find myself in a devastating car situation. At exactly 72,000 miles, I discovered my engine would need to be completely replaced. I discovered this after having my vehicle diagnosed at the Ford dealership. Coolant in the #2 and #3 cylinders. The dealership said it would cost $9500 for a new motor. I just bought the car! After searching the internet, I am finding more and more people are having the same problems, and some are prone to engine fire! I have children! There is already law suite against the Ford Company, But I try to do the right thing, I called Ford Motor Company to report my problem. Case No. CAS-39543003-F9S9T0 CRM:040000805. They said they would look into it. My hopes were up. I received a call, They know it is a default in the motor but it has not been recalled yet! Really! So I’m supposed to wait until there is a recall! I was so upset! She did say that they would pay for $4500, but I only have 30 days to let them know if I will take their offer. I told her I don’t have $5 - $6000 sitting around. Ford motors is aware of this issue and has refused to offer assistance in the whole cost. It should be a recall...
The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact inspected under the hood and noticed that the spark plugs were crossed in the engine. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the spark plugs to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.

No warning lights, took vehicle in for clicking noise - diagnosed ball joint repair. Also Ford dealers tells me my water pump is leaking and repair will cost over $3,500. I have read that this is a common problem and I would like to report it.
I took my Vehicle in because the AC stop blowing cold air, and the overheating lights kept coming on. After waiting for a week, I was told it was a water pump but that did not fixed the AC being at all, couple days later I got a call from the dealership (GRAPEVINE FORD) that the compressor went out. After 3 weeks of waiting, I end up paying out of pocket what is supposed to be covered based of this letter I received from FORD. I feel like I should not have to pay for something that FORD should have covered. Letter below explained the very issues I had with the vehicle, including OVERHEATING and damages like bad cooling relay would cause.
Carbon monoxide leaking into my car—tailgate area and through the front hvac. Weird sound from engine that sounds and smells like electrical burning or something overheating.
Ford Eco Boost Coolant Intrusion Issues. If the car sits an idles the coolant light will come on an say the coolant is too hotIf I run the air conditioning it will do the say, or drive it on the freeway. There are no leaks, no were. And you can smell the coolant, it smells really hot. My engine line is on.
Transmission is giving out has turned off while driving and sometimes it won't go reverse and Or won't go into gears Machine shows code p0731
Water pump failed and coolant leaked into the engine
I have a 2017 Ford Explorer with a 2.3 EcoBoost Four-Cylinder with 59k mileage. Back in November of 2021 My Ford dealership said Coolant is leaking into the Cylinder head causing the car to misfile after a check engine light diagnoses. This causes the car to overheat and can cause major issues. Now i need my entire engine replaced. I have a read that this a know issue in other Ford SUVs in but not in a Ford Explorers, however I have the same engine type. This is a problem for the Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder engines produced since 2010.
INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH
car stops an air-conditioned Bell Brooking due to bearing inside a clutch on the AC compressor !! I was on the highway and the car just stops I almost got hit from behind
About a week ago I started smelling coolant after shutting down the engine, took the vehicle to my mechanic and was informed that the water pump is going bad.
While driving at highway speeds the vehicle lost power due to a main crankshaft bearing failure. The vehicle was repaired at a Ford Dealer and was not under warranty at the time. I was forced to pull off the road due to the loss of power while travelling on a busy highway creating an unsafe emergency situation. There was no warning lights or warnings of any given before the engine failure. It simply lost power and stopped working.
Initially the cars check engine light came on intermittently for about 3 days, then one day while driving the wrench light came on and the car immediately started decelerating - almost as if I was breaking hard, and would not accelerate over 30. After turning it on and off multiple times the light went away for days until my appointment with the mechanic, that same day it came back on. We went to a Ford dealership and they said it was the throttle body and repaired it. Two weeks later the same issue occurred. I know this was a big issue in 2016 and earlier models, I believe the problem was never fixed in 2017 models. Our car is currently in the shop and they are "emailing Ford" about what to do. The first incident I was on the interstate when I stopped abruptly and the second was on the highway. I luckily had no one behind me both times otherwise this could've easily caused an accident.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I have been experiencing the smell of gas/exhaust leaking into the cabin. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I am concern with the health issues that this smell could put my family and I in. Specially if theirs a possibility that carbon monoxide could be leaking into the cabin. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? I had the vehicle inspected by Ford but they advise that they couldn’t reproduce the smell. They also advice that their were a two drain plugs missing in the lift gate which would resolve the issue if replaced. I have replaced the two missing plugs and continue to experience the issue. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear?no
47k miles. 2.3L Eco-Boost. Rough idle, vibration/shaking sometimes at start, slow acceleration, Engine Coolant High Temp light came on for a minute while driving, Check Engine light came on after another rough start (stayed on) took it to Ford for service, they said several misfires, coolant in cylinders, and now possibly a blown head gasket. Waiting for word from Ford service dept, may need an engine replacement. Thankfully, covered by warranty, for now.
‘17 Explorer with 32,000 miles on it, bought new from dealership and have kept up with all recommended maintenance to vehicle and have went above and beyond to keep it in pristine condition but started experiencing coolant dripping from internal water pump this May ‘21. Last year Jan ‘20 was repaired for faulty clock spring and again in March of ‘21. Same issue. No longer under bumper to bumper warranty so became out of pocket expense. This year alone, it’s been out of service for two weeks already.
Recall has been issued on the ford explorer for smell of exhaust in the cabin. I have had the recall inspected and completed in 2019. I am now smelling the exhaust again upon acceleration. I told the dealership I have always been able to smell the exhaust even after they "fixed" the issue the first time. It just wasn't as bad. The smell is much worse now.

MY 2017 FORD EXPLORER WITH 62,000 MILES SUFFERED A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST POWER AND I WAS ALMOST HIT FROM BEHIND. I LIMPED INTO A REST AREA WHERE THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO A DEALER. THE FORD DEALER SERVICE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A MAIN BEARING FAILURE. THE CAR NOW REQUIRES A NEW ENGINE THAT WILL COST $6700 DOLLARS AND FORD HAS DENIED TO PROVIDE ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 62,000 MILES ON IT.

MY 3 YR OLD TRUCK ALREADY HAS A LEAKING COOLANT LINE WHICH COME TO FIND OUT IS DRAINING INTO THE WATER LINE IN THE ENGINE. I CAN'T DRIVE MORE THAN 5MILES BEFORE I NEED TO REFILL MY COOLANT. IN ADDITION, THE HEATING ELEMENTS IN BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS HAS GONE OUT. I THOUGHT IT WAS A FUSE AND OF COURSE ITS SOMETHING MORE.

WHEN BACKING UP AND THE WHEEL IS TURNED THERE'S A HESITATION THEN WHAT FEELS LIKE I HIT SOMETHING. (A CLUNK W/O THE NOISE ) THEN WHEN BREAK PEDDLE IS PRESSED THE CAR SHIMMIES BAD . I ALSO SMELL ANTIFREEZE COMING FROM THE HEATER VENTS .BROUGHT IT BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO FIX IT SINCE IT WAS JUST PURCHASED THERE .. THEY HAD IT FOR 5 DAYS .. NOTHING GOT FIXED. THEY TURNED FRONT ROTORS AND TOPPED OFF FLUIDS. I DO BELIEVE THAT I HAVE A BAD REAR TOW BEARING OR A U-JOINT. BREAKS NOT SURE BUT THE CAR IS WORSE THAN BEFORE. STILL SMELL ANTIFREEZE AND THERE'S A DARK FILM ON THE WINDSHIELD WHICH INDICATES A BAD HEATER CORE. I'VE BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALERSHIP BIT THEY WON'T RETURN MY CALLS OR EMAILS OR TEXTS. I BELIEVE I WAS SOLD A LEMON. THERE'S AN OXIDATION ON THE ENGINE AND A BLACK STAIN ON BOTTOM OF ENGINE. ALSO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS HAVE BEEN REPLACED. THIS IS A 2017 AND SHOULDN'T HAVE THIS MANY ISSUES .

REPLACED THE IDLER AND BELT 3 TIMES AND FINALLY CHANGED THE A/C COMPRESSOR. ALSO THE HOOD BUBBLED AND THEY REPLACED THE HOOD AND REPAINTED IT. THERE ALSO WAS A TRANSMISSION LEAK AND THE ALTERNATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THEY ENDED UP BUYING THE VEHICLE BACK DUE TO THE ONGOING UNRESOLVED ISSUES.

RE: 2017 FORD EXPLORER. CAR DYING OUT ON ACCELERATION FROM A STOP. A SCARY THING HAPPENED ON RT #619 TODAY IN HARTVILLE. THAT IS, THE CAR DIED OUT HALFWAY OUT ONTO THE ROADWAY, IT PAUSES FOR SOME SECONDS WHERE THE ACCELERATOR DOES NOTHING. THEN IT PICKS UP BY ITSELF. THE THROTTLE DOES NOTHING. NONE OF THESE ACTIONS ARE DESIRABLE. THESE BEHAVIORS PUT US IN GREAT DANGER. SO LET'S SEE, THIS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE MORNING I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP (MONDAY 01-06-2020). AND, IT HAPPENED ONCE THE 2ND DAY BACK TO ME ON FRIDAY 01-31-2019. BUT IT DID NOT HAPPEN FOR YOU IN THE 4 WEEKS YOU HAD IT TO TEST. AMAZING ISN'T IT? WELL, I THINK I'M GOING TO GO ALONG WITH THE MANY OTHER PEOPLE ONLINE THAT REPORT THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM THAT I EXPERIENCE. IN MY CAR, IT'S BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE NEW. I DO BELIEVE FORD IS WELL AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. I ALSO BELIEVE THEY'RE NOT GOING TO DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT IT UNTIL THEY'RE MADE TO. WHEN I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER, HE SAID TO ME: "FORD TOLD US NOT TO DO ANYTHING UNLESS YOU CAN VERIFY IT." SO, YOU JUST DON'T VERIFY IT. IN "FORD THINK" THIS MUST MEAN THE PROBLEM DOESN'T EXIST. THIS PUTS ME IN MIND OF SOME YEARS BACK WHEN CARS WERE TAKING OFF BY THEMSELVES. PINNING, INJURING, AND EVEN KILLING SOME OWNERS. IT'S ODD, BUT IT WAS THE SAME THING BACK THEN. IT'S THE DRIVERS, THEY'RE DOING SOMETHING WRONG. IT'S NOT OUR CARS, AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M BEING TOLD NOW. IT'S MY DRIVING HABITS. THE SAME HABITS THAT DON'T EFFECT MY OTHER 5 CARS. I DID NOT BELIEVE IT THEN, NOR DO I BELIEVE IT NOW. FORD SEEMS TO HAVE AN ODD MINDSET. TO FIND SOMETHING, YOU HAVE TO BE LOOKING FOR IT. AND, I ALSO REPORTED TO YOU THAT THE SYNC SYSTEM WAS GOING CRAZY, MAKING ADJUSTMENTS THAT WEREN'T NEEDED OR CALLED FOR. IT HAS TO BE CONTINUALLY READJUSTED. DID IT NOT DO THAT EITHER? IT DID IT FOR ME THE MINUTE I STARTED IT UP. THANK YOU, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

MAY 29TH 2019 I WENT INTO HEALEY FORD IN GOSHEN NY AFTER NEARLY 4 WEEKS OF HAVING HUGE PLUMES OF WHITE SMOKE POURING OUT OF MY EXHAUST PIPES EVERY TIME I PUSHED ON THE GAS OR STOPPED. IT DIDN'T MATTER IF I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY OR A CITY STREET THE ISSUE STILL OCCURED. THE SMELL WOULD PERMIATE THE ENTIRE INSIDE OF MY CAR. WE ALREADY HAD THE RECALL FIXED FOR THE EXHAUST SYSTEM CYCLING BACK INTO THE CAR SO THIS IS ALARMING. IT GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AS THE WEEKS PASSED AND THE PLUMES BECAME THICKER AND VERY SMELLY. WHEN I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM THEY TOOK IT INTO THE SHOP. ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER TAKING IT BACK INTO THE SHOP THE SERVICE MANAGER CAME BACK TO ME AND SAID THAT HE AND 2 OTHER TECHS PERSONALLY ENDED UP LOOKING AT IT AND AGREE THEY BELIEVE IT IS THE TURBO. I AM TAKING IT BACK IN TODAY JUNE 3, 2019 AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE TAKING APART THE ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND ENGINE TO FIX IT. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM THAT POSTED JANUARY 23, 2017 COVERING ONLY 1163 2017 FORD EXPLORERS( NHTSA CAMPAIGN #16V925000). I CALLED FORD AND REPORT AND WHAT HAS BEEN OCCURING, WHAT WAS SAID, AND MY CONCERNS ON MAY 30, 3019. I EXPLAINED MY CONCERNS ABOUT THEM POSSIBLY MISSING SOME CARS AND PUTTING US AT RISK. THEY NOTATED IT, BUT WERE ADAMANT THAT MY EXPLORER IS NOT INVOLVED. TODAY, JUNE 3 2019, I WILL BE DROPPING MY EXPLORER OFF AT HEALEY AND THEY WILL HAVE IT FOR A FEW DAYS. I AM HOPING NHTSA WILL TAKE ANOTHER LOOK INTO THIS RECALL AND REALLY MAKE SURE ALL CARS THAT HAVE THE ISSUE ARE COVERED. IT'S A DANGEROUS RECALL AND I BELIEVE SOME HAVE BEEN MISSED AND FORD IS NOT LOOKING INTO IT FURTHER WHICH PUTS PEOPLE'S LIVES AT RISK. I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH THE RESULTS OF THE DEALERSHIP'S ASSESSMENT AND DIAGNOSIS WHEN IT IS COMPLETED.

THE CAR LURCHES FOR THE FIRST 40-50 FEET AT SLOW SPEEDS WHILE APPLYING MINIMAL PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. IT HAPPENS THE INITIAL TIME PUTTING IT IN DRIVE AFTER EACH ENGINE START, REGARDLESS OF PUTTING IT IN REVERSE FIRST OR NOT. IT USED TO ONLY HAPPEN AFTER EVERY FEW STARTS, BUT HAS PROGRESSED TO EVERY SINGLE TIME NOW AND SOME CAN BE VERY AGGRESSIVE. THE DEALERSHIP HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIX THE ISSUE 5 TIMES NOW, WITH THE 5TH TIME RESULTING IN THEM SAYING IT IS A "NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC" OF THE VEHICLE, WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT IS CAUSING IT. I WAS TOLD BY THE LOCAL SERVICE MANAGER THAT HE "DOESN'T KNOW WHY IT IS DOING IT, BUT IT'S NORMAL." HE THEN PROCEEDED TO COMPARE THE CHARACTERISTIC TO SOMEONE POORLY RELEASING THE CLUTCH ON A MANUAL VEHICLE AND AGAIN, STILL CLAIMING THAT EVERYTHING IS PERFECTLY NORMAL.

EXHAUST STILL ENTERING CABIN FOLLOWING FORD CORRECTIVE MEASURES. THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN SERVICED FOR THIS SEEMINGLY ONGOING ISSUE USING THE CORRECTIVE MEASURES SPECIFIED ON THE MOST RECENT TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN (17NO3); HOWEVER, THE CARCINOGENS AND CARBON MONOXIDE PRODUCED BY THE EXHAUST ARE STILL ENTERING THE CABIN FOLLOWING ACCELERATION. AS WITH OTHER SERIOUS COMPLAINTS INVOLVING THIS VEHICLE, THE ODOR IS A DELAYED RESPONSE TO ACCELERATION, BUT VERY EVIDENT. AS NHTSA IS THE CONSUMER'S AVENUE FOR ASSISTANCE IN PROTECTING THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY, THIS ONGOING OPEN INVESTIGATION SHOULD RESULT IN CREATING PROVISIONS THAT DEMAND THIS COMPANY TAKE ETHICAL MEASURES IN PREVENTING TOXIC SUBSTANCES FROM ENTERING THEIR VEHICLES. THE OPEN NHTSA INVESTIGATION HAS ALREADY CONCLUDED, "FORD HAS ISSUED MULTIPLE TSBS RELATED TO THE EXHAUST ODOR ISSUE, AND IN SOME CASES REVISED THOSE DOCUMENTS MULTIPLE TIMES...". IF THE MANUFACTURER IS CONTINUOUSLY GENERATING NEW TECHNICAL BULLETINS, BUT COMPLAINTS ARE STILL BEING RAISED WITH MODELS AS OLD AS 2011, THE END RESULT IS THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT TAKING THESE INCIDENCES SERIOUSLY ENOUGH. FORD NEEDS TO BE FORCED INTO CORRECTING A DISASTROUS DESIGN IN THEIR EXHAUST SYSTEM AS THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ARE OBVIOUSLY NOT PRODUCING RESULTS NEEDED TO PROTECT CONSUMERS. PRACTICES SUCH AS REPROGRAMMING THE AIR HANDLING SYSTEM TO ALLOW FOR MORE "FRESH AIR" TO COME INTO THE CABIN WHEN ACCELERATING IS COUNTERINTUITIVE TO PREVENTING EXHAUST FROM ENTERING THE CABIN. MEASURES TO PROTECT CONSUMERS FROM THESE TOXINS SHOULD BE THE ONLY NHTSA CONCLUSION. THE FACT THAT THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE 2011, WITH NO CORRECTIVE CHANGE IN THE EXHAUST'S DESIGN IS ALSO CLEAR INDICATOR THAT THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT INTERESTED IN TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY. FOR NOW, ROLLING WINDOWS DOWN DURING ACCELERATION IS THE ONLY MEASURE TO PROTECT AGAINST THESE TOXINS.

I WAS TRAVELING ON A HIGHWAY IN THE RIGHT LANE AT 55 MPH, WITH TRACTOR TRAILERS TO MY LEFT AND BEHIND ME. I CHANGED THE RADIO STATION AND A WARNING SUDDENLY APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD STATING "TRANSMISSION NOT IN PARK". I FELT THE CAR BECOMING SLUGGISH AND I LOST POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD, BUT HAD NO TURN SIGNAL TO WARN THE TRUCK BEHIND ME. HE NARROWLY MISSED ME AS I PULLED OFF. WHEN I CAME TO A STOP I REALIZED THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF, AS IF I HAD HIT THE IGNITION SWITCH. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND SWITCHED ON THE IGNITION. I COULD NOT BELIEVE I HAD INADVERTENTLY TURNED THE CAR OFF, BUT ASSUMED I MUST HAVE, WHILE CHANGING THE RADIO. YESTERDAY, JAN 32, 2018, MY VEHICLE LOST A SERPENTINE BELT AND I LOST POWER. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER ASKED IF I SAW A WARNING THAT SAID "TRANSMISSION NOT IN PARK" BEFORE I LOST POWER. HE SAID HE HAD BEEN HEARING THAT FROM MANY FORD EXPLORER DRIVERS LATELY - THAT THEIR VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPS RUNNING, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE USING THE RADIO. I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH MY LOCAL FORD DEALER, BUT I BELIEVE THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN, AS I AM NOW FINDING OTHERS REPORTING THE SAME ISSUE IN ONLINE FORD FORUMS.

OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP IN THIS VEHICLE WAS NOVEMBER 23, 2017. WE DROVE ABOUT 300 MILES SOUTH TO GALVESTON, TX. ON THE WAY BACK HOME, I WAS DRIVING , WHEN WE GOT TO ABOUT HOUSTON, I TOLD MY HUSBAND I NEEDED TO PULL OVER AND LET HIM DRIVE, AS I DIDN'T FEEL GOOD AND FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO PASS OUT. HE DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY BACK HOME. I WAS THINKING MAYBE I WAS GETTING SICK OR COMING DOWN WITH SOME KIND OF BUG. I JUST FELT ALWAYS DIZZY AND LIGHT HEADED. I STARTED TO GET A STRANGE FEELING MY HEAD, A STRANGE TIGHTNESS'I THEN GOT CONCERNED. I WENT TO MY DOCTOR ON DECEMBER 27 TO FIND OUT WHAT HE THOUGHT IT MAY BE. I JUST FELT SO WEIRD AND FUNNY. I CONTINUE TO GO THROUGHOUT JANUARY AND MY DOCTOR TELLING ME I NEEDED TO GET A MRI ON MY BRAIN BECAUSE I COULDN'T SHAKE WHATEVER I HAD. THE STRANGE FEELING OF DIZZINESS WAS ALWAYS THERE. I TOOK OFF MANY DAYS FROM WORK AS I WOULD START TO DRIVE INTO WORK ABOUT AN HOUR AWAY AND KEPT FEELING SO DIZZY THAT I COULDN'T DRIVE. I KEPT TELLING MY DOCTOR WHEN I WAS IN MY CAR DRIVING THAT I FELT THE WORSE. I THOUGHT PERHAPS IT WAS SOME KIND OF MOTION TYPE OF SICKNESS LIKE VERTIGO. HE TESTED ME FOR MANY THINGS LIKE THAT AND AFTER MY MRI CAME BACK FINE'I STILL WAS HAVING ISSUES. AFTER MANY TESTS, MEDICINES AND ALL AND NEVER FINDING ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I JUST KNEW I HAD FELT WEIRD AND DIZZY SINCE OUR ROAD TRIP TO GALVESTON. I HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE UNTIL A FRIEND OF MINE AND I WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS WEIRD FEELING I KEPT HAVING. SHE TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO TAKE MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT TESTED. MYSELF AND MY FAMILY HAVE BEEN SMELLING A SMELL EVERY TIME I WOULD DRIVE. WE DID THE VIDEO ON IT AND TRYING TO SHOW PROOF BECAUSE FORD MANAGER AT THE SERVICE DOESN'T BELIEVE ME AT ALL!!! WE TOOK OUR 2017 FORD EXPLORER TO SERVICE 5X THIS MONTH OF JUNE! FORD SERVICES AT JUNE 1ST, JUNE 7TH,JUNE 11TH, JUNE 15TH AND JUNE 16TH AND GOING TO BRING IT BACK AGAIN WITH PROOF OF THE VIDEO THAT OUR SUV DO HAVE CARBON MONOXIDES SMELL! PLEASE HELP AND I CANNOT KEEP DRIVING THIS WITH THE CARBON MONOXIDE SMELL WHICH I AM USING THIS CAR FOR WORK PURPOSE. THE CARBON MONOXIDE SMELL START WHEN I'M OVER 45 MPG ON BUSY MAIN ROAD OR HIGHWAY. FORD SERVICE WAS LIKE OH THAT'S MUSKY SMELL AND PUT SPRAY TO KILL THE BACTERIAL SMELL, THEY REPLACED BATTERY, AIR COMPRESSOR FOR THE AC AND NOTHING TO FIX THIS CARBON MONOXIDE!! I'M ABOUT TO GIVE UP THIS SUV.
I HAVE A 2017 FORD EXPLORER PLATINUM WHICH I PURCHASED BRAND NEW ON NOVEMBER 25, 2016. IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO REALIZE BUT EVERY TIME I WOULD DRIVE THE EXPLORER, MY EYES WOULD GET VERY HEAVY AND I WOULD DEVELOP A HEADACHE. I COMMUTE 42 MILES EACH WAY FOR WORK AND I CANT COUNT HOW MANY TIMES I ALMOST FELL COMPLETELY ASLEEP. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND OUT THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM TO DUE TO POSSIBLE CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) LEAKS ENTERING THE VEHICLE THROUGH THE VENTILATION SYSTEM. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND HAD THIS LOOKED AT EARLY THIS YEAR. FORD REPLACED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND I NOTICED A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN HOW I FELT WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE. RECENTLY, IN THE PAST TWO WEEKS I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUE AGAIN WITH HEADACHES AND FEELING SLEEPY WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT FORD CORPORATE ABOUT THIS AND I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE. I WOULD LIKE FOR THEM TO EITHER COMPLETELY FIX THE ISSUE OR ALLOW ME TO TRADE IN MY VEHICLE FOR ANOTHER ONE. THIS IS TRULY A HAZARD NOT ONLY TO MYSELF BUT FOR MY PASSENGERS (WIFE AND KIDS) AND TO OTHERS ON THE ROAD. PLEASE HELP TO GET THIS RESOLVED...
I SMELL EXHAUST IN THE CABIN SOMETIMES. I WORK OUT OF MY CAR A FEW HOURS A DAY, LEAVING IT ON AND WITH AIR CONDITIONING ON WHILE I GO DOOR TO DOOR AND GET HEADACHES AND SUPER TIRED WHICH I HAVE NEVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I ALSO GET EXTREMELY SLEEPY AFTER BEING IN THE CAR FOR MORE THAN AN 40 MINUTES AT A TIME. SOMETIMES I TAKE A NAP IN THE CAR WITH THE A/C ON AND ALL 4 WINDOWS CRACKED ABOUT AN INCH EACH. WHEN I WAKE UP I FEEL DIZZY, SICK AND HAVE A HEADACHE AFTER A WHILE.

STRONG BURNING SMELL INSIDE OF VEHICLE WHEN ACCELERATING. THE SMELL IS SO STRONG IT WILL MAKE YOU NAUSEOUS, REQUIRING ME TO PULL OVER AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS ADVISED IT WAS THE UNDERCARRIAGE COATING BURNING OFF. I AM NOW AT 5500 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND THE SMELL CONTINUES TO PERSIST. THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD MOTOR HAVE NOT BEEN HELPFUL IN RECTIFYING THIS PROBLEM OR FINDING THE CAUSE OF THE SMELL. THE PROBLEM OCCURS EVERY TIME I HAVE TO ACCELERATE, ON A DAILY BASIS.
VEHICLE SURGE ON FIRST ACCELERATION AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE. SURGE - THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCES AN ACCELERATING LUNGE FORWARD AND THEN STOPS FOR ABOUT TWO OR THREE CYCLES (STOP/START, STOP/START ETC.) IT IS UNEXPECTED AND UNCONTROLLABLE UNTIL IT SUBSIDES WITHIN 20 TO 30 FEET. THE DEGREE OF THE UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION IS EXCESSIVE WHEN COMPARED TO THE SLIGHT APPLICATION OF THE GAS PEDAL CONDITIONS - HAPPENS ONLY AFTER THE FIRST STARTUP OF THE ENGINE, IN WARMER WEATHER WHEN THE "CHOKE" IS NOT REQUIRED. EXAMPLE: START ENGINE, BACK OUT OF GARAGE, PLACE IN FIRST GEAR, ACCELERATE SLOWLY FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS IS WHEN THE SURGE IS EXPERIENCE. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH EVERY STOP/START CYCLE DURING NORMAL DRIVING, LIKE STOPPING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. IT HAPPENS ONLY AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, AND GOING FORWARD FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE PRIMARY PROBLEM IS THE DEGREE OF THE UNCONTROLLED, OSCILLATING ACCELERATION RELATIVE TO THE SLIGHT AMOUNT THAT THE GAS PEDAL IS APPLIED. IT IS NOT ABOUT AN OVERLY SENSITIVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. IT ABOUT THE ENGINE SURGING, THEN DYING OFF, THEN SURGING AGAIN.

I AM AN ATTORNEY FILING THIS REPORT ON BEHALF OF AND AT THE REQUEST OF MY CLIENT, THE VEHICLE'S OWNER. THE COMPLAINT IS A NOXIOUS ODOR WHICH FILLS THE VEHICLE DURING ITS OPERATION; AFTER NUMEROUS REPAIR ATTEMPTS BY FORD, THIS CONCERN HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTED. WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVER HAS OBSERVED THE INTERIOR HAS BECOME INUNDATED WITH A NOXIOUS, OVERWHELMING, AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS ODOR OF GASOLINE, EXHAUST AND/OR FUMES. THE DRIVER HAS FELT ILL EFFECTS AFTER THIS OCCURRENCE AND IS CONCERNED ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING OR OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS AS A RESULT. THIS ISSUE IS VERY CONCERNING BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS AND BECAUSE VEHICLE CANNOT BE DRIVEN FOR ANY SUBSTANTIAL PERIOD OF TIME WITHOUT FILLING WITH THIS ODOR. THE ISSUE HAS MOST OFTEN BEEN OBSERVED WITH HIGHWAY DRIVING WHEN THE ENGINE IS UNDER LOAD, I.E. ACCELERATING. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE SHORTLY AFTER THE TIME OF PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST REPAIR ATTEMPT BY THE DEALER FOR THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE WAS MADE IN JULY OF 2017. AT LEAST 4 REPAIR ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE SUBSEQUENTLY. THE ISSUE CONTINUES. THIS LAW FIRM HAS REQUESTED THAT FORD TAKE BACK THE VEHICLE AND REFUND THE CLIENT'S PURCHASE PRICE UNDER ARIZONA'S MOTOR VEHICLE WARRANTIES STATUTE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD AN EXPLOSION COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE THEN STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM DETACHED, WHICH CAUSED THE PASSENGER TIRE TO EXPLODE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOWING LOT. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO PENSKE FORD COLLISION CENTER (8970 LA MESA BLVD, LA MESA, CA 91942, (619) 464-7777) WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO "WORK IT OUT THE BEST HE COULD". NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. MY WIFE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON ICY ROADS ON DECEMBER 5. SHE WAS DRIVING OUR 2017 FORD EXPLORER WHICH WE HAD PURCHASED ON MAY 31, 2017. SHE WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT ON A COUNTRY HIGHWAY AND HEADED NORTH. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND SHE HAD JUST GOTTEN THROUGH THE INTERSECTION WHEN A VEHICLE THAT WAS HEADING SOUTH, LOST CONTROL AND HIT HER HEAD-ON. THE ATTACHED PICTURE SHOWS THE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE SUSTAINED ON THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. BEYOND THIS DAMAGE, THE IMPACT WAS STRONG ENOUGH THAT A MOTOR MOUNT MOUNTING PIN WAS SHEARED CLEAN OFF THE MOTOR AS WAS THE COVER ON THE TIMING BELT. THE REBAR IN FRONT OF THE RADIATOR WAS SNAPPED COMPLETELY IN HALF. ALL THIS DAMAGE...AND THE AND AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS SUFFICIENT DAMAGE THAT THIS $50,000+ VEHICLE WAS CONSIDERED A TOTAL LOSS. I'VE CONTACTED THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN SIOUX FALLS, SD WHERE WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. AS SOON AS I MENTIONED AIRBAGS, THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT ADDRESS OR COMMENT ON ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS I RAISED ABOUT THE VEHICLE SAFETY FEATURES. I'VE CONTACTED FORD MOTOR COMPANY DIRECT. SAME STORY. AS SOON AS THE SUBJECT OF AIRBAGS WAS LOCKED FIRMLY IN THE MIND OF THE LADY I WAS TALKING WITH, SHE PROCEEDED WITH ABOUT TEN MINUTES OF QUESTIONS. AFTER SPENDING PROBABLY 20 MINUTES ON THE PHONE WITH THIS LADY, ALL I GOT WAS, "YOU NOW HAVE A CASE NUMBER IN OUR SYSTEM." WHEN I ASKED ABOUT GETTING ANY FOLLOWUP CORRESPONDENCE, I WAS TOLD, "ALL FUTURE CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE BETWEEN THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND FORD MOTOR COMPANY." AND, I'VE HEARD NOTHING SINCE. BECAUSE MY WIFE WAS NOT AT FAULT IN THIS ACCIDENT, WE ARE DEALING WITH THE OTHER DRIVER'S INSURANCE COMPANY (FARM BUREAU) AND GETTING TREATED LIKE WE WERE THE PERPETRATORS INSTEAD OF THE VICTIMS.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LASCO FORD DEALER LOCATED AT 2525 OWEN RD, FENTON, MI 48430 WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INSULATE 05 AND THE VALVE A009 NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I BOUGHT A 2017 FORD EXPLORER FOR MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE BACK AND FORTH TO COLLEGE. SHE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING DIZZINESS, HEADACHES AND NEARLY PASSED OUT AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I GET IN THE VEHICLE AND START IT UP, IT SMELLS LIKE EXHAUST INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM.
DRIVING DOWN A DIRT TRAIL FROM A MOUNTAIN OUTLOOK THE CARS ELECTRICAL SHUT OFF. WE HAD NO CONTROL OF BRAKES, OR ANYTHING BUT STEARING. NOT TO MENTION WE WERE PICKING UP MAJOR SPEED DOWN A MOUNTAIN, AND BOUNCING EVERYWHERE. WE HAD TO SWERVE BACK AND FORTH, HITTING BUSHES AND SEMI DRIVING UP THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN TO TRY AND SLOW DOWN. OUR WHOLE FAMILY WAS IN THE CAR, INCLUDING A TWO MONTH OLD AND A THREE YEAR OLD. THE ONLY WAY WE GOT IT TO WORK AGAIN WAS SLAMMING THE SHIFTER INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN PUSHING THE RESTART BUTTON, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY JUST OUR PRAYERS THAT GOT THE CAR TO TURN BACK ON AND GIVE US BRAKE CONTROL AGAIN. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR IN FEAR OF IT HAPPENING AGAIN.

MY 2017 FORD EXPLORER XLT WITH BASE 3.5 V6 HAS BEEN HARD TO START FROM THE FIRST WEEK OF OWNERSHIP. IT HAS LESS THAN 5000 MILES ON IT NOW AND ISN'T FIXED. FORD DEALERSHIP STATED IT WOULD HAVE TO GET WORSE BEFORE THEY COULD FIX IT. VEHICLE SHOWS NO DTC'S OR ANY HISTORY! MY WIFE HAS REFUSED TO DRIVE IT OUT OF TOWN DUE TO THE FEAR OF IT NOT STARTING AT ALL. WE HAVE RECORDED OVER 30 VIDEOS OF IT NOT STARTING AND HAVE SENT VIDEOS TO FORD MOTOR CO. WITH THE SAME RESPONSE, CANT FIX IT IF IT ISN'T BROKE. APPARENTLY IT WILL HAVE TO EITHER BREAK SOMETHING INTERNALLY AND LEAVE MY WIFE AND CHILD STRANDED, BEFORE IT WILL BE DIAGNOSED. IT IS A $40000 LEMON THAT TAKES 3-4 TIMES ATTEMPTING TO START BEFORE THE ENGINE WILL RUN. THIS WEEKEND IT TOOK AT LEAST 30-40 SECONDS BEFORE VEHICLE STARTED, THEN IT WOULD NOT IDLE CORRECTLY! STILL NO DTC'S! VEHICLE DOES THIS NO MATTER THE LENGTH OF TIME ENGINE HAS RUN OR LEVEL OF FUEL? IT DOES IT DURING REMOTE START OR THE PUSH BUTTON. IT DOES AT TIMES HAVE A STRONG ODOR OF GAS AFTER START-UP, ALMOST AS IF IT WAS FLOODED? AS A PERSON IN THE AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR WORLD, THE ABSENCE OF CONCERN FROM FORD IS SHOCKING! SO INSTEAD OF TRYING TO CORRECT A ISSUE BEFORE IT BECOMES A DANGER, THEY WOULD RATHER IT BECOME DANGEROUS AND THEN REPAIR IT? IF IT IS A FUEL RELATED ISSUE, THEN THIS IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. THE VEHICLE IS GETTING WORSE, BUT AS SAID EARLIER, IT WILL HAVE TO COMPLETELY NOT START BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE. FORD MOTOR CO HAS NOT BEEN VERY HELPFUL, AND NOW I AM PROUD OWNER OF VEHICLE THAT WILL NOT START CORRECTLY.

WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW ON 8/11/2017 (19 MILES)AND WE STARTED NOTICING A SMELL OF EXHAUST WHEN WE ACCELERATED AND WHEN WE HAD THE REAR A/C ON COMING IN THE CABIN. WE HAD IT AT THE DEALERSHIP FROM SEPT 25, 2017 TO OCT 6,2017 (1496 MILES). THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS WHEN WE PICKED IT UP FROM THE DEALERSHIP ON OCT 6, 2017. WE BELIEVE THIS IS A SERIOUS HEALTH CONCERN AS WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING HEADACHES, ESPECIALLY MY WIFE, WHO IS THE PRIMARY DRIVER. WE WILL NOT LET OUR GRANDCHILDREN RIDE IN THIS VEHICLE WITH THE EXHAUST FUMES PRESENT. WE ARE AWARE THAT FORD IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2012. AS THIS IS A BRAND NEW VEHICLE,WITH 1496 MILES, WE FEEL THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY ANYTIME SOON. WE DO NOT WANT HAVE TO KEEP TAKING THIS TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TEMPORARY FIXES (TSB). WE WANT A PERMANENT FIX, IF THAT INCLUDES GETTING A NEW ONE.

2017 FORD EXPLORER SPORT. 3.5 ECOBOOST. WHEN ACCELERATING 3/4 OR MORE ON THE PEDAL. DOES NOT SMELL SO MUCH AS EXHAUST AS IT DOES SULFUR AND BAD EGG SMELL. ONLY WAY TO GET THE SMELL OUT OF VEHICLE IS TO TURN AIR OFF AND ROLL WINDOWS DOWN. SEEMS WORSE WHEN AIR CONDITIONING IS ON THAN THE HEAT. PASSENGERS USUALLY GET IT WORSE THAN DRIVER.. AT LEAST THAT'S MY EXPERIENCE, OR THAT IS THE SIDE WITH THE PROBLEM. I WAS READING ON WEBSITES BEFORE ALL THESE CLAIMS WERE BROUGHT UP AND I KEPT COMING TO THE CONCLUSION FROM READING UP WHAT COMPLAINTS I FOUND, IT WAS THAT THE TWIN TURBOS HAD A LOT OF BLOW BACK AND IT WAS ONLY THE ECOBOOST MOTORS. NOW I NOW DIFFER AND THERE IS A CURIOUS PROBLEM AND I OWE A SMALL FORTUNE ON A VEHICLE THAT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND ALSO WITH A FAMILY OF 5. DOES NOT HAVE PROBLEM AT IDLE OR IF DRIVING GENTLY. AFTER A SCARY LONG DRIVE FROM INDIANA TO NORTH CAROLINA I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT LETTING THEM KNOW THAT I COULD SMELL EXHAUST WHILE DRIVING AND I FELT OVERLY TIRED, WAY MORE TIRED THEN NEED BE. AFTER TESTING IT WAS DETERMINED THAT CO WAS COMING INTO THE CABIN OF MY VEHICLE. THEY STILL HAVE MY VEHICLE NOW AFTER 2 WEEKS AND THE PARTS THAT WERE ORDERED WERE BODY FILLER AND ELECTRICAL TAPE. THIS DOES NOT SEEM TO BE THE APPROPRIATE FIX FOR THIS SITUATION THAT COULD CAUSE CATASTROPHIC INJURY OR DEATH AND NOW I AM SCARED TO PUT MY AND MY FAMILIES LIVES IN DANGER DUE TO MY VEHICLE TRYING TO KILL US. THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE INTERSTATE AS SPEEDS OF 50-75 MPH. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND IF I WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED SO MANY TIMES I WOULD HAVE PASSED OUT AND CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHICH COULD HAVE KILLED ME OR SOMEONE ELSE. I WAS ADVISED THAT IF I WAS GOING TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE I SHOULD DO SO WITH THE WINDOWS DOWN, WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND WHY I HAVE HAD A LOANER CAR FOR WEEKS.

I RENTED THE REFERENCED VEHICLE FROM ENTERPRISE RENTAL CAR FOR 1 WEEK. DROVE APPROXIMATELY 2000 MILES. THIS 2017 VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER WHEN I RENTED IT. I BELIEVE THAT THE ENGINE WAS THE 3.5 LITER VERSION. EVERY TIME I ACCELERATED HARD, SUCH AS ENTERING ON THE INTERSTATE, I COULD SUBSEQUENTLY SMELL A VERY STRONG EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR OF THE SUV. I ALSO NOTICED WHEN I RENTED THE VEHICLE THAT ALL THE WINDOWS AND SURFACES HAD A FILM ON THEM - PERHAPS RESIDUE FROM EXHAUST GASES. I AM A 54 YEAR OLD RETIRED ENGINEER AND HAVE OWNED AND RENTED OVER 25 VEHICLES IN MY LIFETIME AND FIND WHAT I EXPERIENCED WITH THE EXPLORER TO BE VERY UNUSUAL. I ALSO FOUND THAT I WAS SLEEPIER THAN NORMAL WHEN DRIVING PERHAPS DUE TO CO2 EXPOSURE. ALL OF MY PASSENGERS ALSO EXPERIENCED UNUSUAL SLEEPINESS. THE EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR WAS UNDENIABLE. I FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT FORD IS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS AS A PROBLEM WITH ONLY THE POLICE INTERCEPTOR EXPLORERS DUE TO AFTER MARKET MODIFICATIONS. MY EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THIS IS A COMPLETELY FALSE AND MISLEADING EXPLANATION. I AM VERY PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE NHTSA IS DOING AN EA ON THE PROBLEM. FORD HAS IGNORED THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND THE PROBLEM IS VERY REAL. I WAS CONSIDERING BUYING THE EXPLORER WHICH WAS ONE REASON I RENTED THE VEHICLE AND FROM MY EXPERIENCE I WILL NOT TOUCH THIS VEHICLE AND WILL NOT BE PURCHASING ONE. PLEASE DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE REGARDING THIS PROBLEM AND I HOPE TO SEE THAT THIS EVENTUALLY LEADS TO A OVERALL RECALL OF ALL AFFECTED EXPLORERS. THANK YOU.

CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED IN PASSENGER CABIN - AFTER READING STORIES ABOUT POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) IN 2016 FORD EXPLORERS IN MID JULY 2017 I PURCHASED A KIDDE BATTERY POWERED CO DETECTOR AND INSTALLED IT IN THE REAR AREA OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. IT HAD NOT ALARMED UNTIL WE WERE TRAVELING FROM SENECA, SC TO INDIANAPOLIS, IN. WE WERE TOWING AN 8X5 ENCLOSED U-HAUL TRAILER AT NORMAL FREEWAY SPEEDS. TOW/HAUL WAS ENGAGED BECAUSE WE WERE TOWING AND THE ENGINE WAS GENERALLY RUNNING AT HIGHER RPM'S, ESPECIALLY GOING UP THE MOUNTAIN INCLINES. THE CO DETECTOR FIRST ALARMED WEST OF ASHVIILLE, NC. SUDDENLY THE HEADACHES AND DROWSINESS BOTH MY WIFE AND I WERE EXPERIENCING MADE SENSE. WE OPENED THE WINDOWS AND THE ALARM STOPPED AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES. AFTER THIS HAPPENED 3-4 TIMES I MOVED THE DETECTOR TO THE FRONT OF THE PASSENGER CABIN SO THAT I COULD MONITOR THE PART PER MILLION DISPLAY. WE FOUND THAT IT ONLY TOOK 15-20 MINUTES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING FOR THE DETECTOR TO DISPLAY 31PPM, THE DETECTORS MINIMUM CONCENTRATION DETECTION THRESHOLD. THE LEVEL WOULD THEN BUILD OVER TIME. DUE TO THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF CO ON THE HUMAN BODY I NEVER LET THE CONCENTRATION EXCEED 62PPM. I FOUND, HOWEVER, THAT THE PEAK CO CONCENTRATION DETECTED WAS 103PPM. I ASSUME THIS WAS REACHED WHILE THE DETECTOR WAS IN THE REAR OF THE CABIN, WHERE THE DISPLAY WAS NOT VISIBLE TO ME. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT LAKE KEOWEE FORD SUGGESTED THAT I RUN THE HVAC IN RECIRCULATE MODE. I TRIED MANY DIFFERENT HVAC MODES - RECIRCULATE, NORMAL/OUTSIDE AIR, REAR HVAC TURNED OFF - BUT THE RESULT WAS ALWAYS THE SAME, CO BEING DETECTED IN THE CABIN WITHIN 15-20 MINUTES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT BUYING FORD'S CLAIM THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLES WITH BODY PERFORATIONS FROM THE INSTALLATION OF AFTER MARKET EQUIPMENT. THE VEHICLE IS GOING INTO A CARMEL, IN FORD DEALER THIS AFTERNOON.

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT MY 2017 FORD EXPLORER AND A CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK. I HAVE OVERALL FEELING BAD SINCE WE GOT OUR NEW 2017 FORD EXPLORER, WHICH IS VERY OUT OF CHARACTER FOR ME. I AM A PRIOR SPECIAL OPERATION VETERAN, OVERALL IN GOOD HEALTH, AND ONLY 30Y/O. LIKE MANY, WHO HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS VEHICLE I AM GETTING NAUSEA, WEAKNESS, AND TENSION HEADACHES FROM DRIVING THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE BEEN VERY WEAK AND HAVING HEADACHES, AS OF LATE. THIS HAS HAD A MAJOR IMPACT ON MY DAY-TO-DAY LIFE. I COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHY OR WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH ME IT SEEMED AS IF IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE. I AM STARTING TO THINK MAYBE I HAVE LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO CARBON MONOXIDE OVER THE LAST 3 WEEKS. I GOT THE FORD EXPLORE 3 WEEKS AGO AND THIS SUDDEN SICKNESS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THEN. I GOT SO WORRIED WITH MY HEALTH"I WENT TO THE DOCTOR. I EXPLAINED TO THE DOCTOR "I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT'S GOING ON WITH ME BUT I FEEL ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE HAD A FLU FOR ALMOST A MONTH". I WAS DESPERATE AND I KNOW I SOUNDED CRAZY BUT I HAVE BEEN HAVING SOME SERIOUS BOUTS WITH WEAKNESS, FATIGUE, AND HEADACHES. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR ON JULY 31ST 2017 AND I REALLY HAVE BEEN BAFFLED BY THE SUDDEN ONSET OF SYMPTOMS. THIS WAS BEFORE I KNEW ABOUT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION INTO THE 2017 FORD EXPLORER. I SAW THE STORY RUN TODAY (8-3-17) ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA AND I STARTED TO PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER. AT THE DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT ON (7-31-17) THEY PULLED BLOOD, AND ARE CONDUCTING A BUNCH OF TEST BUT NOTHING HAS COME BACK. I AM CONCERNED, I AM HOPING IT'S NOT RELATED TO THE CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK THAT OTHERS ARE REPORTING. MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS FOR MY PREGNANT WIFE AND UNBORN CHILD. AS A PURPLE HEART VET I HAVE PUT MY HEART AND SOUL INTO OUR GREAT COUNTRY AND I NEED THIS AGENCY TO PLEASE FIND ANSWERS TO IF THESE SUVS ARE SAFE. MY FAMILIES COULD DEPEND ON IT THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE MARCH 2017. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT EACH TIME THE VEHICLE REQUIRES RAPID ACCELERATION, FOR EXAMPLE PASSING ANOTHER CAR ON A TWO-LANE ROAD, YOU WILL SMELL EXHAUST FUMES IN THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THESE FUMES ENTER THE CABIN VIA THE AIR CONDITIONING VENTS AND WILL BE SO STRONG THAT ALL OCCUPANTS WILL DEVELOP DIFFICULTY BREATHING. DURING ROUTINE ACCELERATION, WE HAVE NOT DETECTED ANY FUMES, HOWEVER SOME OCCUPANTS HAVE DEVELOPED HEADACHES SIMULTANEOUSLY INTERMITTENTLY.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AT 4:00 PM . I WAS TRAVELING IN THE SECOND TRAVEL LANE AT APPROX 68 MPH SURROUNDED BY LOTS OF TRAFFIC AND MANY LARGE SEMI TRAILER TRUCKS. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTED BEEPING AND WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DASH BOARD TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON, IT SAID" TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK" WITHIN SECONDS I LOST ALL POWER. THE SCREEN WENT BLACK AND THE ENGINE HAD DIED . I HAD NO POWER WHEN I STEPPED ON THE GAS PEDAL. AS MY CAR WAS SLOWING DOWN I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE SAFELY BEFORE THE CAR CAME TO A STOP. I HAD MY DAUGHTER AND YOUNG GRANDDAUGHTER IN THE CAR ALSO. THANK GOOD WE WERE NOT HIT BY ANY CARS OR TRUCKS ON THE TURNPIKE. AFTER SHIFTING TO PARK WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A STOP, THE DASH SAID " STEP ON THE BREAK TO RESTART". LUCKILY THE CAR DID START SO THAT WE WERE NOT STRANDED ON THE TURNPIKE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS IMMEDIATELY

I HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT AND THEY SAY THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE SMELL OF EXHAUST IS PRESENT ALMOST EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE VEHICLE.

ON JANUARY 27TH, 2017, MY WIFE AND I LEASED A NEW 2017 FORD EXPLORER. EVERY TIME WE OPERATE THE VEHICLE, WE GET EXTREMELY SICK (SOME SYMPTOMS WE EXPERIENCE ARE SORE THROAT, RUNNING NOSE, HEADACHES, AND NAUSEA THAT LAST HOURS AFTER EXITING THE VEHICLE). THIS OCCURS ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES WHILE DRIVING/OPERATING THE VEHICLE. THE HEATING SYSTEM WAS SET TO 75 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT AND THE WINDOWS WERE CLOSED. AFTER WE FELT SICK WE DID SHUT OFF THE HEATING SYSTEM AND OPEN THE WINDOWS BUT THERE WAS A SLIGHT ODOR IN THE CABIN AND WE STILL FEEL SEVERAL ALIMENTS. DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR MYSELF AND MY 6-MONTH-OLD DAUGHTER THAT WAS IN THE VEHICLE (THIS BEING MY MOST SIGNIFICANT CONCERN). FORD MOTOR CORP INSTALLED A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM, REMOVED THE REAR BUMPER AND RESEALED ANY LEAKS, CHECKED CABIN PRESSURE AND TRIED TO RESEAL ANY CRACKS THAT MAY ALLOW EXHAUST TO RENTER THE CABIN. FORD STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FIXED, AFTER BEING BROUGHT TO THEM FOR THE THIRD TIME (THEY SAID THEY FOUND MORE LEAKS AND RESEALED THEM), BUT REFUSED TO GIVE ME ANY DOCUMENTATION STATING THAT THE VEHICLE IS SAFE FOR MY FAMILY AND MYSELF TO BE IN. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES, A FORD SERVICE TECHNICIAN LOCATED AT SAYVILLE FORD TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE WITH ME AND CONFIRMED THE SAME AILMENTS. THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP FROM SERVICE AFTER FORD STATED IT WAS FIXED FOR A 3RD TIME AND WE WERE STILL GETTING SICK WHEN WE DROVE THE VEHICLE. WE CONTACTED FORD AGAIN AND WE ADVISED THEM OF THE SITUATION FOR A 4TH TIME AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS 'BY ITS VERY NATURE, NEW CAR SMELL IS DUE TO PLASTICS AND ADHESIVES IN THE VEHICLE. IT COULD BE AN IRRITANT TO SOME. UNFORTUNATELY, YOU MAY HAVE TO CONSIDER OTHER OPTIONS THAT MAY BE AVAILABLE TO YOU.'

EXHAUST GASES ENTERING THE PASSENGER CABIN, CAUSING BAD SMELL, USUALLY UNDER LOAD, DURING HILL CLIMBING, MODERATE TO HARD ACCELERATION WHEN JOINING INTERSTATE OR FASTER ROADS, AC IN USE, WITH OR WITHOUT RECIRCULATION ON, SYMPTOMS OF SORE RUNNY EYES AND HEADACHE AND NAUSEA IN CHILDREN AND OTHER OCCUPANTS. CONFIRMED TODAY BY DEALER WHO HAS IMPLEMENTED AN ATTEMPTED FIX. THIS IS A 2017 MODEL XLT. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS SINCE VEHICLE FIRST PURCHASED. INITIALLY BELIEVED IT WAS SMELLS FROM OTHER VEHICLES, HOWEVER AS SYMPTOMS CONTINUED WITH OCCUPANTS SEARCH REVEALED KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE CONFIRMED BY DEALER TODAY AND ATTEMPTED FIX UNDERTAKEN.
