The panoramic sunroof sunshade assembly on my 2020 Ford Explorer Limited failed when the sunshade suddenly came off the guide track during normal operation. Prior to the failure, the sunshade operated normally with no warning signs, messages, or indicators. Once detached, the sunshade hung down into the rear window area and obstructed rearward visibility while driving, creating a safety hazard during lane changes, merging, and reversing. An authorized Ford dealer inspected the vehicle, confirmed that the sunshade had come off the track, and quoted approximately $1,500 for repair. The component remains installed in the vehicle and is available for inspection upon request.
Panoramic Sunshade Problem (Roll Back Issue)
The panoramic sunroof shade broke and hung down obstructing my view out of my rear view mirror. It is dangerous for me to be driving without being able to see behind me when my sunshade or sunroof are open. It is available to inspect. I brought it to a repair shop and they said it is a very common issue with Ford Explorers and an expensive repair. The vehicle wasn’t inspected by the manufacturer or police and there were no warning lamps. Ford is well aware of this issue and needs to fix it
The panoramic sunroof cover is not functioning properly. When it is open, it’s supposed to spool up in the back, but it is not working and the cover just drops back into the backseat, obscuring the view to the rear of the vehicle. It’s a very unsafe situation and upon doing some research, I have found this to be a very common problem with this car. No recall has been issued, but it is very clearly a manufacturers defect.
The sunroof fabric is sagging and partially obstructing my view through the rear view mirror
The sun shade for my 2020 Explorer has now joined the list of many others, where the sunshade drops and as it is now, I can’t see out my rear view mirror. Very dangerous!
Somehow the sun shade for the sun roof has started sagging. It’s like it suddenly popped out of its tracks and it can block the rear view which is very unsafe
The dash at the bottom of windshield and where the dash meet is coming up.
The electric sunroof/moonroof shade malfunctioned and pulled off the track, with part of the shade falling into the car compartment and obstructing the driver's view out the rear, including obstructing the rear view mirror. The dealer looked at it and stated that a spring had broken, but that the entire sunroof shade assembly needs to be replaced —a $2100 repair. In my opinion, this is a safety issue due to obstructed driver views, not just a cosmetic or convenience issue.
Air Conditioner turns ON by itself even after being manually TURNED OFF, happened multiple times. This occurred with the manual start and the vehicle running / moving.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Sunroof headliner assembly failed. The headliner fabric detached and came off the track without an prior misuse or manual operation, it simply fell loose on its own. The material is now sagging and when trying to use the sunroof the fabric hangs in the line of vision causing a safety hazard. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? While the issue did not cause an immediate accident, the loose headliner obstructs visibility while trying to use could become a distraction to the driver.IT blocks the driver's line of sight or interferes with airbags in an emergency. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The failure occurred spontaneously and I have a appointment to take the dealership for further inspection. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No formal inspection has been completed at this time. The issue will be presented to a Ford service center for further evaluation. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lights or messages appeared prior to the failure. The issue occurred suddenly and without any prior indication. The fabric and track system separated unexpectedly during normal stationary conditions.
The sunshade that covers the sunroof when not in use has separated from the track. I am told (via several forums) this is a very common issue that affects most ford explorers in some cases multiple times even after replacement. When the shade opens, rather than retract as intended it drops down into the cabin of the vehicle obscuring visibility via the rear-view mirror as well as falling on any passengers in the second row of the vehicle. This is a definite safety hazard when driving.
The power retractable fabric sun shade / sunroof cover came out of the rails while retracting this while driving, causing the fabric to hang down in my baby's face and cause loss of rear mirror visibility.
The dash board is warped and literally peeling off. I took it to a dealer to get it looked at to see if Ford could help. They won't. My concern is that if the airbag had to deploy, they won't operate properly. I don't know what to do.
On [XXX]., in heavy rush‑hour traffic on [XXX] , my vehicle (~75,417 mi) suddenly lost motive power w/o warning at ~55 mph. It became immobile in a live lane, creating a roadblock and rear‑end crash risk. Drivers swerved/honked. Accelerator had no effect; limited/no power‑steering assist; I coasted to an in‑lane stop (no safe shoulder) and activated hazards. Cluster displayed “SHIFT SYS FAULT—Service Required” and wrench icon. Attempts to restart failed; the vehicle remained disabled ~30min until a tow arrived; police responded. After tow, on a slight incline, the vehicle rolled backward when started and the parking brake was released, though the cluster showed Park—clear rollaway concern. Recovery/diagnosis: Towed first to AutoTech Clinic (advised replacement trans). Then to Bill Brown Ford (Livonia, MI): fractured planetary gear and broken park pawl; recommended full transmission replacement (~$8,500). Repair history (pre‑purchase): I’ve owned the car <6 mos (now ~75k). A Ford dealer later informed me the vehicle previously had major work at Taylor Ford of MI: trans‑cooler plumbing cracks between cooler and trans lines at ~34k, and major internal trans repair at ~46k (“burnt clutch A; full reassembly”). None of this appeared on CARFAX or was disclosed by the selling dealer. Costs/downtime: ~$700 towing/diagnostics to date; trans replacement quoted ~$8,500. Mfr/dealer response: Reported to Ford on 10/13/2025, case [XXX]. Initial response: no assistance; pending. The Ford 10R60 has multiple TSBs for trans issues, but neither the dealer nor CSR cited any, and no assistance has been offered. Maintenance/mods: Vehicle stock; maintained per mfr schedule. Safety concern: Sudden loss of propulsion in traffic + inability to move to safety, combined with a Park indication that allows rollback, present significant crash/rollaway hazards. Please investigate and, if warranted, require a recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Panoramic sun shade flap sags greatly, causing visibility issues to the rear viewing window as well as causing blind spots on both passenger sides
THE BACKUP CAMERA COMES ON WHEN STOP AT A RED LIGHT/STOP SIGN ALL THE TIME. WHEN BACKING UP SOMETIMES SCREEN WILL SHOW PICTURE OF BACKING UP AND OTHER TIMES SCREEN WILL BE BLUE. DANGEROUS WHEN IN PARKING LOT AT GROCERY STORE AS PEOPLE DO NOT PAY ATTENTION. ONGOING FOR OVER 6 TO 8 MONTHS NOW.
My suv was expired last dec and didnt know I just got that since April 2025 and I have to pay my own self for fix suv It not my fault and there no warranty for me check suv and fix recall
Vehicle has a water leak inside the cabin. We tried pouring water down the sunroof drains and can hear a gurgling sound inside the cabin and observed water entering the cabin next to the dead pedal. Took vehicle to dealership and they replaced a different part and did not solve the issue. Musty mold smell present in vehicle causing allergic reaction and reducing driver's vision posing an accident risk. Unable to drive vehicle until leak is fixed and mold is remediated.
The sunroof shade has fallen out of its track and blocks the use of the rearview mirror. Upon attempting to open the sunroof shade, it began to fall out of the track and hang down enough to block the view out of the rear of the vehicle.
On [XXX], after starting my vehicle, I received multiple safety warnings, prompting the check engine light and a wrench icon on the dashboard. The alerts included issues with the anti-collision system, hill assist, traction control, lane departure, and adaptive cruise control, as well as my drive modes which were also unavailable. I contacted Raceway Ford in Riverside, CA, and dropped off the vehicle that day, reporting the errors. The dealership informed me the next day that the Half Shaft Speed Sensor had failed and would cost $870.52 to replace. Since the warranty had expired a month earlier on [XXX], this was no longer covered under the drivetrain warranty. I agreed to the repairs. After installing the new sensor, and conducting a test drive, additional errors appeared. After two weeks in the shop and multiple follow-ups, the dealership concluded that the AWD/FWD sensor had also failed and replaced both sensors. The repair documentation references TSB 21-2270, SSM 49045, and C0631. I believe this raises serious safety concerns and should warrant a recall, especially since other vehicles are experiencing similar issues just a month after warranty expiration. My got multiple warning messages while driving my 2020 Ford Explorer. My local repair shop ran test and determined it needs a new front axle disconnect actuator/shaft - TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 23-2174. Without this repair, several sensors are deactivated: 4WD, Hill Start Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot system, pre-collision Assist and Service AdvanceTrac. With those functions disabled, it puts the driver/passengers at higher risk of collision - especially in the winter months. This repair is costing me over $2000. A vehicle with less than 70000 miles should not be having an issue like this, and Ford is award of the problem, yet have not issued a warranty extension or recall.
Dashboard has separated, leather is rolled back from windshield area and has bubbled and raised on entire dash, this impedes part of my vision via the lower part of the windshield.
The panoramic sunroof Rolo shade has malfunctioned and is currently sagging. This condition is expected to worsen over time, potentially obstructing driver visibility or posing a safety risk due to the possibility of entrapment or flammability. The vehicle has been brought to a certified Ford dealer for inspection; however, no additional inspections have been performed by other authorities at this time. There are no warning lights or alerts displayed in the vehicle related to this issue.
issued started happening when I tried to get into my car and my keyfob was not working. then notice the number pad was working and was able to get into the vehicle. Once inside, vehicle did not want to start. I turn on and off the headlights and thats when the vehicle started. Once started, vehicle started showing orange warning messages. the following messages were shown: Pre-Collision Assist Not Available Hill Start Assist Not Available 4WD Fault Service Required Service AdvanceTrac See Manual with a wrench on it. There is also a wrench light on with the advance trac light on. This issue was diagnosed by Ford Scarsdale and they charge me $209 just for the diagnostic and stated that I need a new AWD Module plus performing TSB 23-2174. with a list of parts totaling $926.42 plus labor of $1,463. The labor seems a bit over price as I don't believe it will take 7 hours to fix this if we take the labor at $200/Hr. There were no prior messages prior to failure. Issue started happening around August 9th, 2025 where my car would start with no issues and after 10 minutes of driving, all the above messages would start showing. Now, messages show when car starts and dont go away. In addition, I have taken my vehicle to Ford Scarsdale on July 2, 2025 from front/read differential and transfer case fluid change and pinion seal change. In addition, on 03/27/2024, I took my vehicle since there was oil leak in the front axle and was repaired under warranty. Dealership should have suggested to do this TSB 23-2174 knowing this was a common issue and I was still under warranty
Sunshade - Bought the car 2 years ago. Hit the button to close the sunshade and it stopped closing. Turns out the frame cracked on its own. No accident, no one pushing or pulling on the sunshade, the frame just cracked on its own. This is a 2020 model so I find it very hard to believe it is "wear and tear", this is definitely a defective part or Ford used too cheap of a product on a expensive vehicle. This issue can cause health concerns as my family is being cooked by the sun, not to mention the potential for skin conditions/sunburn that could develop as a result of this.
Panoramic sunshade droops and sags creating obstructed rear view
Interior driver door handle - coating is metal, it partially peeled off. Several times it has cut my finger when I open the door (paper type cut). Due to fast paced life, I forget to open door is a way to avoid the metal flake and tend to always cut my finger which is scary if I touched it when vehicle was in motion, there is a quick second of shock/pain from cut. Ford has this common problem as we had the window openers replaced when it was warrantied, same issue. I think it's a safety issue and should be replaced by Ford. They want to charge me over $300 for the repair, I'm not going to give them the satisfaction. Driver side is more affected because it is used 3x as much and other doors.
Sunroof shade has failed and blocks view of rear of car including rear view mirror.
1. Passenger rear middle seat folds up randomly and repeatedly when someone is sitting in it. It's triggered by pressing on the middle of the back of the seat. This is not related to the current recall, I've had that recall completed and the buttons passed inspection. Basically the seat is trying to eject the passenger repeatedly. Huge safety issue. Sheehy Ford of Ashland has documented this in their report when completing recall. 2.Sunshade has broke and sags down, creating zero visibility in the rear view mirror. Huge safety issue 3. Cupholders are falling through, plastic rivets broke. Cups fall through cupholder
Sunroof shade sagging Preventing rear visibility and potential injure to rear passenger
The transmission failed at 61,000 miles. When I got to the shop where I was getting it looked at they had another ford explorer 2020 with 70,000 miles also had transmission issues.
The panoramic sunroof shade failed causing it to drop down on one side, this is a poorly engineered and built by Ford, not an owner's fault. The panoramic roof shade have plastic clips that hold the shade that break by themselves causing the shade to fall. if both clips failed or the one on the drivers side this could cause temporary visual obstruction. This is a poorly designed system and needs to be secured in case of failure.
The shade covering the moon roof made a popping noise and began sagging, inhibiting visibility to the rear of the vehicle
Panoramic moon roof shade cover has detached from the roof of the car. The fabric shade falls into the car blocking vision of the driver. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. I am unaware if the vehicle has been inspected by the manufacturer. There were no warnings of the problem. The fabric just fell into the car blocking the vision of the driver.
Back latch is getting stuck in secondary position when released. Module is intermittently not communicating.
On the glass panels in between the rear and front side windows, the panels are shattering underneath both sides. When looking up online to see if anyone else has this problem, there’s all kinds of pictures of this problem posted online..I’m including photos of mine. Have included photos of driver and passenger side.
Under 23S55 my rear bolt was supposed to be replaced at my recall appointment at the Nice ford dealership in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Only the bushing always replaced as stated by the service writer and also the paperwork says they found no broken bolts and the bushing and ‘hardware’ was replaced. I have the invoice. 1 1/2 year later the bolt snapped causing my differential to nearly come completely off, hanging by one bolt, nearly killing my wife and I, coconut point ford in Estero fl, had the audacity to say bolts aren’t covered under my 100k warranty and the recall is closed so you have to pay. Then they said they’d pay 2100 then 2600 towards the 5300 repair which is not fair as this is a known recall issue that ford failed to fix at my recall appt. Please assist and pressure ford to fix this under the recall. They are saying it is closed which seems inaccurate,
The directional headlights low beams have failed to work on several occasions, it started at 30000 miles. If is extremely dangerous when the headlights go out during night driving.
The panoramic sunroof shade has lost its tension when opens. The roller may have broken its clip to hold since being plastic. When open it blockes from seeing from rear view mirror as it sags down. In short cant use sunroof as it poses a risk of view
Recently, my 2020 Ford Explorer showed a front passenger TSMP failure followed by the rear driver TSMP failure light about 3 weeks later. Within a day or two of the second TSMP light displaying, I had multiple codes lighting up my dash: 4WD fault, hill-start assist unavailable, service advance track, pre-collision assist unavailable, check manual, etc. I found my car was not accelerating every time I pressed the acceleration pedal, and it would stop maintaining my speed and appear to drift like power was lost for a couple to few seconds before resuming power. This caused me to move into a turn lane or make an unexpected turn off the road as I could not maintain speed in the midst of traffic. It was terrifying and dangerous to myself, my children and the vehicles moving around me. One reputable repair shop replaced the TSMP sensors; however, the codes for the other warning lights showed a communication error that only Ford could diagnose. Ford stated the AWD module failed, which meant the different systems were not in communication when I was driving which led to the loss of power that I experienced multiple times while driving to repair shops. Ford stated the AWD module needed to be replaced. It is unbelievable that I would have 2 TSMP sensors and an AWD module fail in less than 5 years of the vehicle being manufactured when I have never replaced any of those items in 7-8 years of owning other vehicles with similar components. I believe Ford has used inferior parts that they know will fail to drive their repair revenue, which is unethical and unsafe to consumers.
THIS RECALL HAS BEEN REMEDIED AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. I NEED THIS RECALL MARKED TAKEN CARE OF SO THAT I CAN CONTINUE RENTING IT. PLEASE REMOVE THIS CARE OFF THE UNREPAIRED LIST ASAP!!!!!
Back up camera glitches and back up lights went out cause me to back into a tree at night
The vehicle’s transmission system has been malfunctioning exhi jerky, delayed, and unpredictable shifting behaviors, especially noticeable at speeds between approximately 27 an 30 mph and higher. At lower speeds, the jerking is less frequent, but as speed increases, the jerks become more severe and abrupt. These issues manifest during various driving conditions, including accelerating, decelerating, coming to a stop, and lane changes on highways and city roads. When the problem first occurred, the vehicle suddenly jolted in a manner that felt as if I had been rear-ended, causing a sharp, uncomfortable sensation akin to whiplash. The unexpected jerks cause the vehicle to surge or hesitate unpredictably, significantly affecting my ability to maintain smooth control. On multiple occasions, this behavior happened while I was slowing down at stop signs, red lights, or in traffic, with vehicles close behind me, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions. In one hazardous incident, while attempting to merge from the right lane to the outermost left lane in order to cross an intersection, the vehicle jerked suddenly and unexpectedly, nearly causing me to collide with multiple vehicles behind me. This loss of control was alarming and made it unsafe to continue driving in this condition. At the time of these transmission malfunctions, my children were passengers in the vehicle, which made the situation even more alarming due to the increased risk of injury to my family. To date, this transmission issue has been consistently reproducible during everyday driving but has not been formally inspected, diagnosed, or repaired by any dealership or independent mechanic. There have been no warning lights, messages, or dashboard indicators that signaled this problem prior to or during these events. The transmission system and related components are available for inspection upon request. Because of these unpredictable and unsafe transmission malfunctions, I am currently u
The rear hatch of my 2020 Ford Explorer does not open reliably. There is no manual release mechanism to open the hatch in case of failure. The only methods to open the hatch are via the button on the hatch itself, the button on the dashboard, or the key fob. When any of these are pressed, the hatch makes sounds as if it is trying to engage and open, but it does not actually open. Additionally, the vehicle dashboard displays an alert indicating that the hatch is open, even though it remains securely closed. This false alert is confusing and concerning. The problem is unpredictable and intermittent, sometimes allowing the hatch to open normally, but often failing without warning. This issue significantly limits access to the cargo area and poses a safety concern in situations where quick or emergency access to the hatch is needed. I had the vehicle inspected by a dealer regarding the hatch issue. They diagnosed the problem as a faulty hatch motor. The estimated cost to repair or replace the motor is approximately $1,300.00. Given the high cost, I am concerned about the safety and reliability of the vehicle, as well as the financial burden of any potential repairs. Because the rear hatch does not open reliably, I am forced to access the cargo area by crossing over the rear seats, which is inconvenient and unsafe, especially when carrying groceries or large items. Moreover, I am unable to access the spare tire in case of an emergency, which poses a serious safety risk.
Back up camera turns off out of nowhere while in use. We have to stop immediately and turn back and not always is there visibility through the rearview window. Has not been inspected, they wanted to charge me $200 just to look at it. Once it goes out after a while it states that backup camera not available and to contact the dealership on the screen.
My 2020 Ford Explorer required a transmission replacement just after 100,000 miles. The service department that handled the repair informed me that the issue with my vehicle’s transmission matches the same issue affecting 2021 and newer Ford Explorer models — models which, I understand, have been recalled due to this known transmission defect. Despite this, my vehicle—just one model year earlier—was not included in the recall, and I was required to cover the full cost of the transmission replacement. This is frustrating and concerning, as it indicates the issue may extend beyond the currently recalled model years. To make matters worse, about a month after the replacement, I had to return to the dealership because the transmission required an update that had not been performed. As a loyal Ford customer, I’m disappointed that I’ve had to endure these issues — both with a known transmission defect and with the quality of the repair — at my own expense. Ford Motor Company cannot cover the repairs due to it not being included in the recalled vehicles, even though the issue is the same.
* The component that appears to be malfunctioning is the driveshaft and/or related transmission system. I have experienced repeated issues such as abnormal jerking when switching gears, grinding or clunking noises, and jerking through the drivetrain with erratic RPMs before the vehicle regains power. These symptoms are consistent with problems covered in recent recalls for the 2020 Ford Explorer. The vehicle is still in my possession and available for inspection upon request. *The issues have made it feel unsafe to drive the vehicle, especially with children in the car. The unpredictable jerking and loss of power present a serious danger, particularly when accelerating into traffic or driving at highway speeds. I am extremely concerned that a sudden failure could result in loss of control, a rollaway, or even a serious accident. Another concern is the defect involving the driveshaft or half shafts that might disconnect or stop functioning. This disconnection can lead to a loss of drive power or, if the parking brake is not applied, a possible vehicle rollaway. *While I have not yet had the issue diagnosed by a service center, I have filed a lemon law claim, and I’m in the process of addressing the matter formally. The symptoms I’m experiencing appear to match known issues that Ford has already recalled for the 2020–2021 Explorer models. *The manufacturer has not yet inspected the vehicle, and no inspections have been conducted by police or insurance representatives. I am open to having the vehicle inspected by Ford or an authorized party as needed. *There were no warning lamps or messages displayed prior to the issues occurring. The symptoms—jerking, clunking noises, and erratic RPM behavior—began gradually over time, with the first noticeable incident occurring a few months ago. Since then, the issues have become more frequent and severe.
Panoramic sunroof shade came off track causing it to sag.
I was involved in an accident. I was traveling through a green light and a car was coming towards my driver side, they failed to yield. I attempted to accelerate and my transmission slipped prior to impact. I have tried to address this concern with Ford in the past and have reported the vehicle jerks on acceleration and when slowing down. You can feel the transmission slip when it is attempting to go from gear to gear.
Sun Shade: Sunroof shade guide has lost the bolt securing it to the shade, will need bolt to re-secure. When retracted back sunroof Sun Shade sags, blocking rearview window. Causes driver to be unable to see out back window. No warning lamps. Problem has been inspected by ford dealership. According to ford the bolt that secures the Sun Shade to the sunroof has come out.
Door handle chrome plating is peeling off. Finger cut when opening the car door. Chrome tips on window buttons had already been recalled for the same reason, but the door handles were not included in this recall. Attached picture of finger was 7 days later.
The panoramic roof fabric has become unhinged from the track and caused a visibility issue for my rear view mirror.
The car leaks water into the cabin on the front passenger side from the HVAC system. This has been a consistent issue and has not been resolved by Ford. The car has no sunroof and the water drips from behind the glovebox. It is enough water to make a large puddle in the front passenger side foot space.
The sunroof liner began sagging when opened. It was inspected and repaired. The repairs were out of pocket at Auto Nation Frisco. We have owned the vehicle for 4 years and hardly use the sunroof. We had no other problems with the sunroof.
The sunroof fabric covering the glass sags down and does not work properly. This is a known issue on 2020+ Ford Explorers with the sunroof option. The sag blocks visibility out the rearview mirror and causes a distraction to drivers.
Sunshade for the sunroof is starting to sag/come off track

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? - driveline, brakes, acceleration, and steering. Ford and 2 dealerships now refuse to take my complaints seriously even though I’m willing to pay diagnosis fees for them too try to figure out what the issue is. Yes available. How was your safety or the safety risk? - delay and at times complete lack of braking and acceleration, being unable to steer, accelerating when braking and vehicle moving when in park. The vehicle shakes, wobbles, vibrates and chimys. Vehicle warning lights have flashed only to be gone in 2 seconds. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer? Yes and no. Initially many parts in the driveline including the transfer case was replaced. The vehicle went into the dealership multiple times because the symptoms kept returning. However, now the same dealership refuses to take the vehicle back because they couldn’t figure out what the issue was and now the second dealership is trying to push back and even accepting my money to take a look at the vehicle. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The manufacturer including ford engineers. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The warning lights seem to appear and then disappear as quickly as they show up. I have tried to log some of them, but sometimes I do not get to see it in time as when starting the car I’m closing my door and out putting my seat belt on. There have been multiple cars for this vehicle, including customer satisfaction programs. The most recent one a steering torque sensor failure posted on the NHTSA site as well as Ford. However on Ford’s website, it is being misrepresented as a loose seatbelt (see attachment). I don’t believe they are being transparent. There are recalls that I believe are excluding VINs purposefully.
2020 Ford Explorer ST my panoramic sun blind is off track It is blocking rear view.
The fabric on the sunroof fails out when opened and blocks view.
-2020 Ford Explorer -Panoramic Sunroof Shade. -Sunroof shade sagging, blocking view from rear view mirror while driving. -Problem is reproduced every time I attempt to open/retract the shade. This is a recurrent problem with many 2020 Explorer owners. -Awaiting appointment with dealer for inspection. -No warnings prior to failure of shade retraction mechanism. Problem began 2-3 months ago.
Sunshade does not retract and sags in the cabin of the vehicle
1. Component: AWD system – Front Axle Disconnect Actuator / Intermediate Shaft • Failure Type: AWD system failed, preventing power transfer to front wheels • Availability for Inspection: Yes, diagnosed and confirmed by Zeigler Lincoln Ford 2. On Thursday, [XXX], while driving in a snowstorm with my two children, my 2020 Ford Explorer AWD system failed completely, leaving us stranded on an icy hill with no traction or ability to move. • My vehicle lost all AWD functionality, causing it to become immobilized on an active roadway in hazardous conditions. • We were trapped between two semi-trucks that were also stuck, creating a high-risk situation where a collision or multi-vehicle pileup could have occurred. • With freezing temperatures and no way to move, we were at risk of hypothermia while waiting for a tow truck. This was not an isolated issue. Ford acknowledges this AWD system defect under TSB 23-2174, meaning this failure can happen to any driver under similar conditions, creating a major safety hazard. 3. Yes. The issue was diagnosed and confirmed by Zeigler Lincoln Ford, who determined it was covered under TSB 23-2174. • Ford has officially acknowledged this defect but has not issued a recall. 4. Yes. The vehicle was inspected by Zeigler Lincoln Ford, and the AWD failure was confirmed as a front axle disconnect actuator/intermediate shaft defect. • Ford issued TSB 23-2174 to address the defect, proving that this is a known issue. • However, instead of issuing a recall, Ford is making owners pay for repairs out of pocket, despite the serious safety risk. 5. Yes. Prior to the AWD failure, I received a wrench icon warning (Powertrain Malfunction Indicator) on my dashboard. • Error codes C0631 and C0633 were later retrieved by the dealership, confirming AWD disconnect failure. • I had experienced intermittent AWD traction loss in winter conditions, but the system failed completely during the snowstorm incident. The transmission failed. Causing me to almost be rear ended because when I hit the brakes there was a hard down sift between gears. Then I could not accelerate resulting in me being stranded on the side of the road. We have had the car inspected by two separate shops and they both confirmed it was a failed transmission. We were not able to take it to the manufacturer dealership for two weeks. There was no warnings before this happened.
The rear window dropped down while driving, which was scary and wouldn't go up.
The accelerator pedal is mounted to the floor and the pedal itself is attached to the base with a very thin piece of plastic that over time separates. In my vehicle the pedal has separated and is moving freely which makes the accelerator pedal raise up while your foot is on the brakes and when you go to accelerate the pedal is blocking your foot from returning to the accelerator. The answer to question #1, the accelerator pedal and yes it is available for inspection. #2 I was nearly struck while crossing over a divided highway because my foot was obstructed by the accelerator pedal. #3 I have contacted the dealer and they advised I had to replace the part because it was not under recall. #4 I am law enforcement and I have encountered and inspected the pedal and deem it to be dangerous. #5 There were no lamps, no warning lights and this occurred all of the sudden, no symptoms prior to separation.

Sunshade will not retract and blocks vision to see out the rear view mirror and back window
Power window switch driver window inoperative. Remaining windows works fine . Only the main driver window inoperative.
Driving down the highway 65mph, cruise on, car makes an abrupt violent jerk forward, tires squeal, and car starts fishtailing across all lanes of traffic. Seems as if car spontaneously slammed on the brakes. Nothing crossed in front of the vehicle, nothing in the road, both hands were on the wheel, feet resting on the floorboard. Nothing displayed on the console. Once control was regained car drove per usual, no issues.
I am writing to bring to your attention an issue with my 2020 Ford Explorer, as well as many other vehicles of the same make and model. Recently, I discovered that the spare tire compartment in my vehicle accumulates water due to a leak, which I believe could compromise the safety and integrity of the vehicle. Upon further investigation, I found that Ford Motor Company acknowledged this issue in a Technical Service Bulletin issued on December 14, 2020. This TSB indicates that Ford is aware of the problem, which appears to affect numerous vehicles. Given that this leak could lead to corrosion or other potential safety hazards, I believe it warrants a formal investigation by the NHTSA. Since this is a known manufacturing issue, I request that the NHTSA initiate an investigation into this defect and consider requiring a recall by Ford Motor Company to ensure that all affected vehicles are repaired at no cost to the owners. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to any updates regarding an investigation or action taken to address this issue and ensure the safety of Ford Explorer owners.

Lift gate stopped opening. Would no longer operate with any of the buttons in the car or key fob. Dealership states that they are seeing this happening a lot with this vehicle at around 60,000 miles. This is a safety issue. What if you needed to get out of your trunk due to an emergency. The lift gate latch quit working due to having 60,000 miles on your car. That makes absolutely no sense. I feel that this needs to be recalled. This is a necessary door that should no go out due to a certain mileage.
Rubber seal around sunroof failed, and vehicle is only 4 years old. Ford states the seal appears to have dried out and failed. This failure cause water to leak into the vehicle during a rainstorm, in the amount of 25 gallons based on what I pulled out by vaccuum and dehumidifier.
Heating on passenger side of vehicle has failed multiple times.
When slowing down around 27mph car downshifts so hard it jerks. If someone would have been behind me they would have probably hit me.
The sunroof is leaking when closed when it rains or when the vehicle goes through car wash. Inside back passenger was getting wet and there was wet smell in the interior. Smell of wet interior can cause health safety issues/risks and car damage. When looking online may be caused by faulty lining or clogged drains.
Tailgate does not work any longer. After a few days period of it getting progressively less functional, it just stopped working.
The backup camera fails to load. I get a blue screen or a distorted screen.
the chrome is peeling from the interior driver door handle, leaving a piece of metal. This flaking/peeling metal cuts your hand when using the inside driver door handle to exit the vehicle. Ford told me it is not covered under the current recall of window switch chrome peeling (and can cut you).
I have 2 safety recalls for my 2020 Ford Explorer, but when I try to schedule for the recall repair they tell me they are having trouble getting the parts, and I had one dealership tell me they only had 1 tech that can do that work so they are backed up 4-5 months. Yet the recall states the parts are available.
While driving, the car shifts gears and does not allow me to drive at the speed I’m at and engine strata to rev. I have to pull over, put the car in park for it to go back. I have had this issue “fixed” twice at the ford dealer. I just recently took it in and they charged me $175 to reprogram the vehicle for this issue, and it happened again 2 days later. My concern is that occurs when I’m driving, and causes me to stop, and if I am not in a place where I can stop it could be dangerous.
My backup camera hasn’t been reliable for over 2 years. Also my audio and GPS do not work. If I put my phone in the car I cannot even answer it due to no audio. I believe it needs a download update. I have tried and tried but have not succeeded. In getting an oil change the mechanic told me it can only be done on a ford computer. This is wrong! I only have 36000 miles on it
I have a 2020 Ford Explorer that has had intermittent issues with the passenger side losing heat since aprox 11/18/2023. On Friday 2/16 we had snow begin falling at 7AM locally. I park in the GARAGE. 1/2 way to work, on a major highway, my passenger side began fogging up. The heat was all the way up and there was no way for me to aim my driver-side vents to the other side of the car. After 4-5 minutes, my passenger side was completely fogged up and 1/4-1/3 of the windshield was also completely fogged up. In the 15 minute drive, I could not see anything on the right side of my vehicle and almost missed my exit, hitting a curb and scraping my rim. This is a known issue as there are 2 bulletins out by the NHTSA for my SPECIFIC make, model and years.
The back hatch has opened 4 times with no warning. The vehicle was in motion. First Time September 2021: I was backing out of my garage, the hatch came open and hit my garage door, it bent the hatch and it was repaired by RT Auto Centerville Iowa and garage door had to be replaced. Second time November 2021: I was backing out of my driveway and it came open with no warning, no damage. Third Time October 2022 I was backing out of my garage, the hatch came open and hit my garage door again, no warning, Repaired by Copeland Repair Center Oskaloosa Iowa Fourth Time February 2023: I was backing out of my garage, the Hatch opened with no warning & hit my garage door, the hatch, and camera were completely replaced and the vehicle had to be painted by Copeland Repair Center Oskaloosa Iowa. Prior to the fourth incident, I contacted FORD Motor company and was advised there was no recall or complaints on this issue and was told to go to the FORD Dealership. I went to the Ford dealer and was advised to take the problem to the repair shop, it was not FORD's issue that they had check it and found nothing wrong. Since the camera and hatch have been totally replaced, this has not happened. I am worried to have passengers in the back row seats due to this issue, for fear it will come open and someone will get injured. I purchased this vehicle new in May of 2020 from Junge Motors, North Liberty, Iowa. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] I only have one of the 3 Estimates. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6
Issues with the rear liftgate opening and closing on its own it will close open and partially close partially open at random in the middle of the night at random it keeps going till it kills my battery It closes when your underneath and causes a safety concern if you were not aware and get out of the way quick enough. Took it to dealership it needs a wiring harness due to corrosion and a switch. I see other people reporting the same with water leaks causing corrosion.
The chrome trim on the 2020 Ford Explorer inside door handle and window switches is separating/peeling off and is very sharp. My neice sliced her finger and was bleeding from the inside passanger door handle chrome that is peeling/separating from the handle when opening the door to exit the vehicle. I have cut my finger on the chrome tipped window switches.
Failure of panoramic moon roof gasket, and in adequate drainage system installation. This causes substantial water intrusion into vehicle. Flooding of drivers side floor causes extremely slippery and wet conditions when operating the pedals. Water migration into vehicle has potential to impact electronics, causing further damage and dangerous driving conditions. Vehicle has been inspected and problem confirmed by the dealership, who contracted a water leak specialist to identify the issue. No warnings prior to appearance. Issues has been ongoing for the past 3 months - 1,000 miles and 4 months after the end of bumper to bumper warranty.
During the past 4 months or so, I have noticed burning sensation in my eyes and tightness in my throat and lungs whenever I get into the vehicle even when the ignition is not even turned on yet. Recently, it got to the point that I am experiencing headaches while driving. I don't feel these sensations when driving my old 2016 Honda Civic or being inside any other car. Last December 2023, I brought and left the vehicle for a week to Future Ford of Clovis dealership in Clovis, CA for diagnostic tests. They did not find anything wrong and no report was made since they did not find anything that might have caused any issues. As of this writing, the problem persists and I do not feel safe anymore being inside this 3-year-old vehicle, let alone drive it.
The front driver's and passenger side wheel well liner is hanging down on my tires. They constantly rub against tires and on driver side it has created a hole in liner. I feel they will eventually detach from wheel well and damage my vehicle or possibly someone else's vehicle. I am afraid it could also fall off in traffic and cause an accident. When I turn my steering wheel the scrubs on liner as well.
The adhesive to the sunroof headliner has failed causing the headliner to sag. The sunroof is almost the size of the entire top of my vehicle, which concerns me because I have two young children in the back and if this falls down on them while I’m driving or even on myself while I’m driving this would be dangerous. This issue is not specific to me. At my dealership there are actually a couple of escapes and explorers going through the same thing. The cost to repair is 6 hours of labor so about $1200. I don’t believe the consumer should pay when this poses a safety risk and also seems like a manufacturing defect. Another thing is that my sunroof will still open but it crunched up the headliner, and if i don’t stop it from opening in time then my sunroof will jam and I will have an open top.
January of 2023, 30,000 miles took the car in for oil change and for a complaint of exhaust noise and smell coming from just behind the engine. Dealer checked and stated they found no issues. December of 2023 43,000 miles on a cold day noticed exhaust vapors coming from under the car in the area of the noise. Found the pipes, NMZ-5G203-A and dash -B to be broken at the expandable joints. This corresponds to both my wife and I experiencing head aches/excessive sleepiness while driving long distances. Made an appointment for January 04, 2024 at Tom Peck Ford Clinton WI. The pipes were found defective and replaced at a cost of~$600. Given the left side had a recall on the police version 3.0L, why was a recall not made for the passenger models with the same engine? Have noted the issue reported on the NHTSA sight often. Recall 21E11. Ford also issued a CSP TSB 21B35 which referenced the Police and ST models with the 3.0L engine, but the parts are the same for the Platinum version. Also noted the -B part as now been updated to a dash -C. It is clear from the reports on the NHTSA and various Explorer forums the flexible connection is a failure point that could lead to an accident or death. The is a far more serious issue than the chrome pieces on the window up and down buttons causing some cut fingers. I cannot download the documents or pictures.
How does a canadian vehicles imported april 24th allowed to be titled april 28th when it was bond released in Sept ???
Overwhelming amount of exhaust gases blowing in through ventilation system. One vehicle is in motion very little, but when stopped and extreme amount of exhaust gases, enter through the vent system. Creating burning, sore throat, at certain times nauseating it’s actually unbearable. Reported it to the dealership they had mentioned it was oil on the exhaust pipe from the transfer case? Transfer case was repaired. Sorry to say I know the difference between burning oil and exhaust gases.. All passengers also as witnesses will agree. On long trips it will create headaches. Even if the exhaust system has a leak, it should not come up through the ventilation system. It’s actually really bad. I noticed there were recalls on older vehicles even related in accidents in police cruisers. I was never issued a recall for the situation yet I have the same situation that have been complained about and documented.
Our 3rd car (used by our daughter) has started to smell like mold. I then noticed the back seat behind the driver side was wet. All windows were up and fully closed - never left open. I soaked up the water. Days later the water returned. I did some research online and found this is a recurring issues were weld joints breakdown and then leak. In that same forum the post referenced water built up where the spare tire is keep. I just opened up the spare tire area and noticed 3" of water and the mechanism for holding down the tire is rusty, suggesting the water has been there for sometime. As reference, here is the forum I mentioned above: https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t51317_ds819498
the pre collision assist came on 10/09/2022 then On 10/02/2023 the pre collision assist warning light flashed 3 times on dash then went out drove to work when i started the car again the hill assist light came on abs light came on collision warning light came on4wheel drive light came on and little wrench light came on i could not change drive modes while driving the vehicle home the reduced power light came on and the vehicle ran slower got the vehicle home did feel safe driving it with system telling me failures and everything not working and called ford dealership asked if it was ok to drive with everything going on was told it was ok to drive was told i had to wait 3 weeks I called another ford dealership was told not to drive it and it had to be towed because it was unsafe and undriveable to dealership where it is being repaired for safety issues
Complete loss of audio when using navigation system. All audio from built-in sound sound system is not available, which occurs intermittently and lasts for up to 3 days or more.
Back up camera stays on after selecting Drive and moving forward, it will either stay on showing what’s happening behind me or will stay on for 20-40 seconds than go to a blue screen or blue than black screen and stay in that screen. While this is happening I have no control over the display, sound, radio or heat. There has been time the back up camera has stayed on while in park. I have several pictures and videos of these incidents. In the incidents I was able to reboot my display it would be unresponsive and not update time these issues only happened when the back up camera would not properly shut off
The exhaust started making excessive noise about 07/15/2023. I had around 42,000 miles on the vehicle when the noise started. That means it was about 2 months and 6,000 miles out of warranty. Ford has a recall on the exhaust system (recall 21E11) for “thermal mechanical fatigue” of the welds on the left-hand side of the exhaust system. This is an emissions systems recall. I took the vehicle to my dealer, Serra Ford, Farmington Hills, MI on 07/19/2023. They did a repair per the recall but the excessive noise continued after I picked the vehicle up. I subsequently took my vehicle to a Midas muffler shop on 07/31/2023. They inspected my exhaust and found that the system was still leaking at the area where the exhaust system has been recalled and repaired and in addition the exhaust was completely broken and separated (weld failure) at the area at the right-hand muffler/tail pipe connection. Both problems are obviously the same type of failure. I have an inspection report and photos of the failed exhaust system from Midas. I took the vehicle back to the dealer. My repair invoice shows their diagnosis “found weld after exhaust on passenger side failed”. This is the right-hand side of the exhaust system. They determined that I needed a complete new exhaust system. I have my dealer repair invoice and photos of the failed exhaust system taken by Serra Ford. Ford has declined to repair and replace the exhaust system as part of my new car warranty or pursuant to the recall. I have obtained documentation relating to the above mentioned recall and to a “Customer Satisfaction Program 21B35” sent to all Ford dealers on November 7, 2022 showing that Ford knew on November 7, 2022 or earlier that it had problems with both the left-hand side and right-hand side exhaust system on vehicles like mine. This was well before my new car warranty expired.
When the car is placed into reverse, it automatically starts launching back with foot on the brake. To stop the car from continuing to reverse, we must pump the brake 2-3 times to take control of the car and in order for it to stop launching back, the car must be put into park and then turned off. This is extremely unsafe and has put our children at risk and is a concern when parking in populated areas. The problem is sporadic (often occurs 1-6 times per month since 2021) therefore, it is never known when it will launch back however, this has occurred on both flat and incline surfaces. The problem has been inspected from a Field Service Engineer who noted that it occurred in their procession and stated it was "normal operating conditions" but then stated they would continue to monitor the issue which is contradictory of the "normal status". This is not normal operating conditions when you have no control over the reversing mechanism.
I purchased my 2020 Ford Explorer ST in 2020. Since then, I've had several warranty issues and recalls. Presently, this "blue screen" issue when the car is placed into reverse cannot be resolved by Ford who offers no solutions other than platitudes. This is a significant safety issue with the vehicle as the exterior camera assist does not work ("blue screen") and beeps intermittently when the vehicle is in reverse, which is a distraction. I cannot comprehend how/why a vehicle has had so many issues and believe action should be taken against Ford to remedy these problems.
Good Afternoon, the problem that I have encountered for is is that the rear camera does not work all the time a blue screen appears and I am not able to see what is behind me and that can cause me to have an accident. I do not feel safe
Backup and 360 camera have not worked since shortly after purchasing this vehicle in Aug 2020. They state issue is intermittent. It is not, it is constant. It rarely works. This has not been fixed since original recall in Sept 2020. They continue to update the recall which seems to be an attempt to hide the true length of time this recall has been outstanding and unresolved which is 3 years. I have young children and no reliable backup camera increases the risk of accidental injury due to backing into a child. It increases risk of accident due to being unable to see surroundings. I have attempted to resolve the matter with the dealership and the manufacturer. I am never given a response other than a canned answer that there is no fix at this time. I have owned the vehicle for 3 years. It is unacceptable to have this be unresolved with no action or accountability from Ford. I hope to see this situation escalated and the issue thoroughly reviewed to include how Ford has handled this. They have repeatedly ignored customers requests for assistance and resolution. They've deleted comments on social media pointing out the continued issue and lack of assistance from Ford in an attempt to keep selling vehicles with these issues they can't seem to fix. I firmly believe the "reasonable" timeline to repair a safety recall has been beyond exhausted. If they can't fix it, they need to find an alternative for the impacted customers. In learning they knew of the issue in May 2020 and I was allowed to purchase in Aug 2020 with this defect, I feel as though they were not following the 2018 law requiring backup cameras in new vehicles. There are significant concerns with the integrity of this company and their lack of concern for maintaining vehicle safety.
1. The Explorer spontaneously went on fire while being driven damaging the entire front of the vehicle 2. The vehicle could have exploded affecting other vehicles as well as injured or killed the driver and passenger 3. No. Insurance Company immediately declared vehicle totaled. 4. No. Once again, vehicle was immediately declared a total loss and assigned salvage company to take possession 5. No warnings. First sign of anything wrong was flames coming from under the hood
The trim between the rear passenger side and the non-moving window flew off on the freeway 3 weeks ago. I had an appt at the dealership for an oil change and was told “yeah, it can happen.” I opted not to have them reschedule me to fit me in for a fix and I’m glad I didn’t because the driver’s side trim in the same window location came off while driving over the Golden Gate Bridge. There were pedestrians all over and it could have hit someone. Both window trims in three weeks, one on a freeway and another on a highly-populated pedestrian/vehicle bridge. These pieces appear to be metal.
Rear lift gate doesn't operate or operates erratically . Rear lift gate will not open traping occupants in the vehicle. Particularly any occupant seated in the third row seats. Yes. Took it to the dealer and they failed to address the problem First began February 2023. The dash board button will work some times and not others. Same for the key FOB and rear lift gate located on the the exterior of the vehicle. I have had occupants trapped in the back of the vehicle when the lift gate will not operate at all.
Child Safety Lock - rear right door Regardless of position of safety lock - door is not fully operational. Generally does not open from the inside, however one out of ten times estimated door will open. No way to turn child safety lock on to secure. Had independent inspector and retail location look at vehicle. They recommended replacing the latch. Further research shows that Ford Broncos from 2020 to 2022 have similar issue with same door (right, rear). Would like investigated to ensure not impacting other vehicles being the issue year and manufacturer are the same.
Badly cut two fingers on my left hand opening the door handle because the chrome tip has peeled/separated which resulted in exposed, sharp edges. I received a notice for "Customer Satisfaction Program 22N17" related to the window switch chrome tips, but not the door handle chrome tips. The window switch chrome tips peeled off first, within the first six months of owning the vehicle, but they did not expose sharp edges and cut my fingers like the door handle chrome tips did.
Ford issued safety recall 23S02 (NHTSA 23V022). in February 2023. We returned our vehicle to the dealer to have them repair and fix according to the recall. The backup camera was not working and the screen was blue. After having our vehicle for 3 days, they told us that the software was updated and we were good to go. Unfortunately, this problem still exists. In fact, on our vehicle the screen works sometimes, and sometimes is does not. We still get the blue screen when backing up. We also get a blank screen while driving. The radio always turns on to a different selection (am,fm, satellite etc). I don't think FORD has repaired this vehicle correctly and needs another recall. Our dealer says Ford is working on a fix, but that it has not been mandated from the NHTSA.
When the car starts all warning lights come on. Hill start assistance, pre collision assistance, all assistance. There is no cruise, no safety collision assistance at all. First appeared on May 19 2023. Ford Dealer is currently trying to fix the problem. They are unsure why it’s doing it. It puts all occupants life at risks as the car doesn’t have any safety assistance.
Weather seal on moon roof fails, allowing wind and water to enter the passenger compartment and on electrical components. Apparently this is a common issue that is only warrantied under the initial 3/36 warranty. The seal is not available separately from the glass, and the glass is “not covered” by fords ESP warranty. The glass is also not available to purchase, and the dealer service department wants $2400 to replace said glass.
The back up camera intermittently shows a blue screen when the transmission is put into reverse. Sometimes the failure will correct itself the next time I put vehicle into reverse, and other times it won't work for several driving cycles. Ford has attempted to fix the issue 4-5 times and the repair has never been successful. A recent recall was performed on the software, but that was also unsuccessful in eliminating the problem.
on several occasions when applying reverse the rear vision camera gives an image on the blue screen making vision impossible
On April 1, 2023 | was leaving the garage of the Marriott Residence inn in Arlington, VA, with two passengers. Up the ramp of level two to level one, slight turn and suddenly car accelerated so fast, sounded like an airplane. Like the accelerator had a mind of its own. Brakes and steering wheel did not respond. We traveled about 20 feet in about 10 seconds at rapid speed head on into a wall. My car was totaled, airbags deployed, a parked car next to me was totaled. EMTs and police responded immediately. We were immediately taken by 2 ambulances to Virginia County Hospital. Injuries: Driver: partial amputation of right middle finger 16 stitches, deep scrape on left Front passenger: severe bruising from seat belt, cut to finger Rear passenger: 4 fractured ribs and severe bruising from seat belt, lower back injury. All treated and released from hospital ER late afternoon, I was not cited. I believe there was some kind of mechanical malfunction.
Vehicle jerking while driving and breaking
I’m constantly cutting my fingers when I used the window controls to roll up or down my car windows. I believe this issue is the chrome is coming off and slicing people when they used it. This issue is unsafe and dangerous especially when driving.
I parked my vehicle 2/17/2023 around 9:45pm in the parking garage of my Condominium for the night. I was awakened Saturday morning 2/18/2023 by the building fire alarm and my neighbors banging on the doors to get outside because smoke was visible from the side of the building. I exited the building and crossed the street. The entire parking garage was filled with thick black smoke. The sprinkler system had activated and the Fire Dept arrived. Through the smoke I was able to see that my 2020 Ford Explorer Limited Edition was on fire. The front end was engulfed in flames which were now shooting up the side of the building and the ceiling of the parking garage.
This is a 2020 Ford Explorer with Platinum trim. The vehicle has less than 30,000 miles on it. There is a foul odor emitted from the rear AC when it’s turned on for either heat or cooling. This has been verified by the dealer. They changed the cabin filter which really only applies to the front and then did a solvent flush for the rear. That has not resolved the issue. Checking other Ford forums I realized it’s a common problem with 2020 Ford explorers 2020 and newer. There doesn’t seem to be a way to resolve the issue and no direction from Ford. I bought this vehicle used and my guess is the previous owner sold it since the foul odor is unbearable. There are no other issues with the vehicle and looks and drives like brand new.
This vehicle has 17,000 miles and has developed a very scary vibration that starts at 50mph. The vehicle is very unsafe and cannot be taken down the road. Nobody should be driving it! Local ford was called and really don't care and booked my vehicle 6 weeks out from when I called. I have had many problems with this vehicle.
I was driving in the fast lane on the interstate and the left front down pipe fell off the catalytic converter. My research shows there is a recall for the pipe cracking. I cannot find a recall for my vehicle. Obviously the pipe cracked and fell off.
When engaging gear into reverse, there’s no image feedback in the information screen. A blue screen is displayed, making it unsafe and dangerous to operate the vehicle. My Explorer is definitely being affected by the recall and yet when checking the VIN number it shows ‘No Recalls’. Please advise and provide confirmation of acknowledgment so I can take it to a Ford dealership for repair. Thank you
Some 2020 Explorer/Aviator vehicles built on or before 17-Feb-2020 may exhibit an intermittent partial opening of the power liftgate and/or false activation of the anti-theft alarm
The issue started after the car was brought in for a recall. They said it was only a software update, so it may be a coincidence. When starting to drive the car after being in park, the front of the car sounds like things are screeching and halts the car suddenly without any warning. When in reverse a note comes on that rear assist is unavailable as it stalls. When in drive no notice comes on but the car comes to a halt. It will work if you turn it off and on and try to drive again but happens in the middle of the street. This is a huge safety concern while driving on the road to be hit by someone, injured by the whip lash from the stop. We have very young kids and refuse to put them in the car in fear of this happening with them in it again, or happening in their daycare parking lot with other kids around. We took the car twice to the dealership by our house, however they were unable to duplicate the issue and says there is nothing they can do.
The contact owns a 2020 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that while activating the windshield wipers, the driver’s side windshield wiper was inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the driver’s side windshield wiper was replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the mechanic stated that the bracket had sunk into the vehicle causing the wiper to not function correctly. The mechanic stated that an additional screw would be added for the wiper to function as needed. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 48,000.
Mileage: 48,000
The back up camera is malfunctioning on my vehicle. It presents a blue image with the back up camera and a blue image on the 360 camera. Everything that I have read shows it is a recall, but my VIN does not have a recall.
The contact owns a 2020 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that there was oil leaking from the vehicle at start-up. The seat heating and cooling system was inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken four times to the local dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was then taken to Phil Long Ford of Denver (7887 W Tufts Ave, Denver, CO 80123) where it was diagnosed and determined that the valve was loose and oil was leaking on to the manifold. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 10,516. THE CONSUMER STATED THEY FAILURE WAS DUE TO ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND DRIVER'S SIDE BEZEL TRIM REPLACEMENT.
Mileage: 26,978
The driver's side door doesn't unlock. The locking mechanism gets stuck in the locked position and the door will not open as it won't unlock. Has happened 9 times in the past 48 hours during a total of 7 outings. It puts the driver at risk if they need to quickly get out or get in the vehicle. I took it to the dealership today and it would not unlock for me to exit the vehicle. They tested the mechanisms involved and all function so not parts replaced. There are no warnings when this happens. First started on 2/22/2022. In my online research, it is happening for others with this type of vehicle including police vehicles which is a huge safety issue for them if they can't exit the vehicle when necessary.
The rear back up camera area is blue and you are unable to see behind the vehicle.
When this vehicle is put into reverse it does not engage the transmission at times. You either have to put it back in to park and back in reverse and/or floor it in essence push the throttle all the way down for it to engage. As that happens and it finally engages you’re going way too fast in reverse. Also when it does not engage it acts like a stick shift and that you are in neutral and you’re either rolling forward or backward depending on the incline. Very frustrating I’ve taken it into the shop two different times specifically for this they say they have a work order in place and the last time they said it was a chip and they ran their diagnostics and corrected it. It still did not get corrected and is still a problem . I am not pleased at all with this failure in the transmission as far as the engaging of reverse is involved. Thank you
This vehicle has been “repaired” by Ford dealer per recall instructions but the backup camera is still intermittently blue. Recall “fix” offered by Ford does NOT fix this problem
The chrome plating on the interior door handle is peeling away from the handle structure, creating a sharp edge that has the potential to lacerate a person's finger(s) as they pull the handle to open the door. This defect cut my middle finger on my left hand fairly deep, causing bleeding, but did not require stitches.
I own a 2020 Ford Explorer (Platinum edition). A recall was issued for the back-up camera. My car had been having issues of intermittent camera problems prior to the recall. I took my car into Sam Pack's Five Star Ford of Lewisville (1144 N Stemmons Fwy, Lewisville, TX 75067) for the recall repair. . . I drove the vehicle for about thirty minutes after completion of the recall repair at which time I parked the car. Unfortunately, when I did so the "Blue Screen" returned. The was the reason for the recall. . . This is the same as prior to the recall "repair". Also, when this happens a warning pops up "Reverse Brake Assist Not Available" (this may be because the camera is malfunctioning). The camera does not do this all of the time. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it is going to fail. After turning the car off for a while (as when eating at a restaurant or grocery shopping, etc.) the camera works when you put the car into reverse (with the one exception noted above). It appears that the "fix" for the recall is insufficient to stop the camera errors from recurring. The incident date listed below is the date of the supposed recall repair. I have uploaded a PDF File showing pictures of the camera errors. If you would like any other information, or pictures of the blue screen errors, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached by email at [XXX] or by phone at [XXX]. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
When backing up, the screen turns blue 3 out of 5 times when placed in reverse.
Sunroof exploded. There were no warning lights or beeps. It sounded like an explosion and caused me to nearly wreck from the loud boom. I went into a field and nearly lost control of vehicle.
Rear camera is not working correctly. If goes to a blue screen a lot.
Transmission shifts from reverse to park and drive to park on its own. Also, heads up display goes blank and sensors / backup camera stop working. Front collision monitors also do not work as well as lane departure sensors
Turned the car on and immediately the headliner above the drivers seat started smoking. Within seconds there was an actual fire and had to call the fire department. Ford does NOT seem concerned about it at all. Are not sending it to be investigated at all from my understanding, My car has sat for 2 months now with no answers still. We do not know what caused the fire or exactly where the fire started.
Rear camera will intermittently cause the screen to display distorted or total blue screen upon placing the vehicle in reverse
FIRENo INJURIES0 DEATHS0 WHEN SHIFTING INTO DRIVE, VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY HAVE A HARD BRAKE PEDAL AND VEHICLE WILL LURCH FORWARD WITH INCREASED RPM. USE OF REVERSE, VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY STOP AND SOUND AS IF YOU HIT SOMETHING. BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD.. THE ISSUE OCCURS FROM A STATIONARY CONDITION, IN DRIVEWAY OR PUBLIC PARKING AREAS, SO THIS CAUSES CONCERN THAT IT DID RESULT IN A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. ISSUE CANNOT BE REPEATED ON DEMAND. IT IS ENTIRELY RANDOM AND EVERY DRIVE HAS TO BE APPROACHED WITH THE EXPECTANCY THAT THE VEHICLE WILL MOVE WITHOUT NORMAL BRAKES TO STOP. THERE ARE NO ALERTS TO TELL US WHY (OR WHICH SYSTEM) IS THE ISSUE. THIS HAS OCCURRED RANDOMLY SINCE LEASING THIS EXPLORER . FORD SERVICE SEEMS SURPRISED AND UNAWARE OF THIS
THE BACKUP CAMERA INTERMITTENTLY DOES NOT WORK WHEN WE PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE. WE ESTIMATE THAT IT FAILS TO WORK 10-15% OF THE TIME. THE SCREEN TURNS BLUE AND WE CANNOT USE THE CAMERA TO SEE WHAT IS BEHIND US. WE RELY ON THE CAMERA BECAUSE THE OVERALL VISIBILITY TO SEE BEHIND THE VEHICLE IS POOR. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS ISSUE IS SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEM THAT LED FORD TO RECALL OTHER VEHICLES. OUR VEHICLE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THOSE RECALLS.

OUR VEHICLE WAS IN PARK IN OUR DRIVEWAY AND ROLLED DOWN TO THE STREET. THE FRONT WHEELS WERE ON DRY PAVEMENT AND THE REAR ON SOFT ICE (IT WAS 52 DEGREES OUTSIDE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT). THE CAR ROLLED SLOWLY BACKWARD DOWN THE DRIVEWAY AND WAS CAUGHT ON OUR SECURITY CAMERA DOING SO. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO FORD (AUTOFAIR OF HAVERHILL) AND THEY HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. THEY HAVE NO BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WAS THE ISSUE IS ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE ADMITTED TO ME THAT THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. FORD CORPORATE HOWEVER HAS TOLD THEM THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR AND THAT IT MUST HAVE SIMPLY SLID DOWN THE ICE. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE AND THE SERVICE MANAGER AT AUTOFAIR FORD ALSO INDICATED THAT THIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE. I CAN SEE THAT VIDEOS ARE UNABLE TO BE UPLOADED HERE BUT I AM HAPPY TO SEND THE VIDEO OF THE CAR ROLLING WITH THE TIRES VISIBLY SPINNING, NOT SLIDING, DOWN ICE.*DT*DT*JB*DT CONSUMER STATED BUY BACK WAS DENIED.*JB

THERE ARE MANY ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FIRST ISSUE IS THAT WATER IS COMING INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND POOLING UP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR. THE SECOND ISSUE IS WATER INSIDE THE PASSENGER TAILLIGHT. THE THIRD ISSUE IS THE ALLWHEEL DRIVE SENSOR IS MALFUNCTIONING. THE FOURTH AND LAST ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE IS THAT THE CONVERTER IS CRACKED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AND EXHAUST FUMES ARE COMING INTO THE CABIN AND IS MAKING THE PASSENGERS SICK. 2020 FORD EXPLORER HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE PRE-COLLISION ASSIST, WHICH OVERRIDES THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND EFFECTIVELY DISABLES THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED TO ME NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE THEN PUTS ITSELF INTO A SAFE MODE, WHICH PREVENTS ACCELERATING AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO OPERATE. FORD ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN OCCURRING, BUT THEIR SYSTEM TECHS AT FORD HQ HAVE NOT LOOKED INTO THE ISSUE.

AFTER TURNING CAR ON AND TAKING IT OUT OF PARK, BREAK BECOMES EXTREMELY HARD WHEN YOU LIFT UP OFF OF IT MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO BREAK. THE CAR THEN ROLLS FORWARD OR BACKWARDS DEPENDING ON IF IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. EVEN WHEN PUTTING ALL MY WEIGHT ON THE BREAK, THE CAR MOVES FORWARD OR BACKWARD FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR TWO BEFORE THE BREAK FINALLY SOFTENS AND I'M ABLE TO BREAK. CAR THEM WORKS AS NORMAL. I HAVE ALMOST ROLLED INTO OBJECTS BEHIND ME OR IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO THIS. BOUGHT IT NEW. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP BUT THEY CANT RECREATE IT AS IT HAPPENS ONLY A COUPLE TIMES A WEEK. WE DID HEAR SOMETHING ROLLING AROUND IN THE COMPARTMENT BELOW THE STEERING WHEEL AND THEY HAVE FOUND SEVERAL FACTORY SCREWS JUST ROLLING AROUND. NOT SURE IF THAT IS CAUSING THIS.

PURCHASED FORD EXPLORER ST IN SEPT 2019 AND WINDSHIELD WAS NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED. TOOK MULTIPLE RIPS TO DEALERSHIP TO CORRECT. AND IT IS STILL NOT PROPERLY FIXED. THEY HAD TO REINSTALL WINDSHIELD AND PASSENGER SIDE PILLAR. THE ELECTRICALLY CONNECTIVITY WITH SYNC 3 HAS NEVER WORKED PROPERLY. I HAVE BEEN TO DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES AND THEY COULD NTO FIX IT. THEN I WENT TO START THE CAR (EARLY IN MORNING) AND 3 DIFFERENT TIMES WHITE SMOKE CAME BILLOWING FROM EXHAUST. THE FIRST TIME I SHUT OFF THE CAR THINKING IT WAS ON FIRE. THE SECOND TIME, IT DISSIPATED QUICKLY. THE THIRD TIME, I DROVE TO DEALERSHIP. THEY COULD NOT FIX IT. 5 DAYS LATER MORE WHITE SMOKE WHEN I STARTED IT, AND THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. AFTER 7 DAYS AT THE DEALERSHIP, THEY REPLACED A ECT SENSOR. STILL PENDING TO SEE IF A 'SENSOR' CAUSES BILLOWING WHITE SMOKE FROM EXHAUST. DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO CHECK HEAD GASKETS, CYLINDER HEAD, OR ENGINE BLOCK WHICH ARE THE MAIN SOURCES FOR WHITE SMOKE. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. SUCH A FRUSTRATING TURN OF EVENTS THAT CONTINUE.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING VEHICLE (IN GARAGE) AND WHILE IT WAS STILL IN PARK, I SAW WHITE SMOKE RISING UP TO THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR. IT LOOKED AS IF THE SMOKE HAD COME FROM THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW DEFROSTER VENT. AS A RESULT, I TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE AND WENT TO GRAB THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. I LET THE VEHICLE SET FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND THEN PULLED IT OUT OF THE GARAGE; HOWEVER, I DID NOT NOTICE ANY MORE SMOKE WHEN I MOVED IT. *TR

THE VEHICLE IS RANDOMLY BRAKING FOR NO UNKNOWN REASON. ALMOST LIKE IF I WAS DRIVING AND PUT ON EMERGENCY BRAKE. IT MOSTLY DOES IT WHILE IN REVERSE WHEN THERE IS LITERALLY NOTHING AROUND ME. THERE IS AN OPTION AND IT HAS STILL DOES IT WITH OPTION OFF. IT HAS NEARLY CAUSED 1 ACCIDENT WHEN I WAS IN MY SONS CAR POOL LINE AT SCHOOL. OTHERWISE IT HAS CAUSED EXTREME ANXIETY BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN. THE BRAKE ASSIST FAULT IS ALSO ON, AND DEALER CANNOT FIND FIX TO THAT EITHER. THE DEALER (CAPITAL FORD RALEIGH) WAS AWARE OF SENSOR ISSUES, AS WELL AS FAULTS THE DAY I TOOK DELIVERY ON VEHICLE. THEY KNOWINGLY SOLD IT TO US ANYWAYS. I TOOK VEHICLE TO SERVICE DEPT THE VERY DAY AFTER WE TOOK DELIVERY. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THESE DANGEROUS ISSUES, AND I AM FORCED TO KEEP DRIVING WITH MY KIDS IN THIS DANGEROUS VEHICLE.

I BELONG TO A FORD FORUM AND THEY'RE HAS BEEN SOME TALK ABOUT AN AIR DEFLECTOR MISSING IN THE REAR BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE BETWEEN THE MUFFLERS PART # 17788. THEY'RE ARE MANY CLAIMING THAT THEY DON'T HAVE IT ON THEY'RE ST LEVEL EXPLORER. PLEASE CHECK ON SEE THIS MATTER. RUMOR IS THAT AT HIGH SPEED THE WIND CAN DAMAGE THE REAR BUMPER AND RIP IT OF THE VEHICLE.
