Dec 29, 2025

Sunroof liner has fallen making it impossible to see out the back window.

Dec 26, 2025

While driving down the highway at about 55mph, I tried to open the panoramic sunroof. As it was opening, the sunroof shade/curtain did not retract into its roller assembly causing the shade to hang down from the roof. It blocked my entire view behind me. I couldn’t even see into the backseat. It was like a movie theater curtain had come down between the front and back seats. Luckily I was able to get home without further incident. This would be horrible if there were an infant in the backseat.

Dec 20, 2025

the check engine light and see manual (Alley Wrench) constantly goes off and code for P0973- the symptoms following were stalling that felt like someone was rear ending her and acceleration takes time to go back up. Will happen many times on a right and shops claim a replacement of transmission would be needed. Vehicle is 2022 Ford Explorer and should not need a replacement this soon!!!!

Nov 24, 2025

Sun roof, moon roof collapse while driving . making rattling noise.

Nov 17, 2025

The sunroof liner has fallen. I cannot see behind me due to total blackness. There are many Explorer owners with this same hardship. This sunroof has been opened very little. I have called and there are MANY Explorer owners that are experiencing this same issue

Nov 6, 2025

The shade covering my sunroof does not roll back properly. It leaves layers of fabric hanging in the backseat, which can block the drivers rear view if they are unaware of the issue. I’ve researched this issue online and it appears to be a pretty common issue.

Oct 30, 2025

The sunshade portion of the moonroof does not retract when opening the moonroof. It simply hangs down, completely blocking the rear view of the driver when using the inside rear-view mirror.

Sep 11, 2025

The sunroof does not seal properly. Randomly it starts to make a clicking sound when driving. It goes away once we open and close the sunroof. The sound is only generated when moving forward at speeds 35 and above. Appears to be a loose seal.

Sep 10, 2025

Sunroof shade does not retract like it should causing bunching in the middle of the vehicle blocking view or rearview mirror and rear glass. Called dealer not covered under warranty, and there was no issues with it prior to it happening.

Aug 26, 2025

Sunroof cover hanging and restricting rear view mirror

Aug 21, 2025

The smell of propane/metal smell in the cabin of vehicle after longer than 1 hour of driving

Aug 19, 2025

It has became a safety hazard on my 22 ford explorer. The sunroof cover has folded and is now drooping down into my visual area in my review mirror and I can’t see out of my rear window.

Aug 6, 2025

Sunroof shade cover won’t roll back. Never used the sunroof and the one time I want to roll open the shade cover won’t roll back. It does open but the curtain just hangs. Took it to the dealer they won’t cover it even though the car only has 41,000 at the time of malfunction.

Aug 6, 2025

Headliner on the retractable sun roof fell off

Aug 1, 2025

When i accelerate, the car jerks back and forth and stalls. ford has said the car was throwing codes but the TECH didnt feel the issue so they sent me on my way.... well fast forward to today, i am informed my car has thrown codes 4 times in the past few days and this morning i was scared to drive my car it was bad... and i have a [XXX] daughter. Our safety is my top priority and it doesnt seem to matter to anyone else INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

First Drivers window not working properly wont always go back up. Took to ford service and told needed a software update at my expense. I have a problem paying for an update that affects my car from working properly. This should be automatic if there are bugs to work out Second Significant air coming from back passenger window. Not under warranty as it is seal. Window very rarely used I have extended warranty however nothing covered. Glad I spent $3500 for that!! Third The plastic clips that hold the undercarriage in place break frequently. I have replaced several times both on my Explorer as well as husbands escape. Again I have to pay for this even though service guys tell me it won’t last because it’s plastic. Seems like ford could find something else to make these clips out of. I put a lot of highway miles on so rain and snow on roads create these clips to break often. The noise it makes when they r broken is ridiculous to go along with the air from the back window I have owned 3 explorers never experienced any window or software updates with previous explorers. $300 to update software and a quote for $80 for clips and $1000 for passenger window - Ford tells me it’s my problem. My concern is ford hold control over the software so they can create these updates whenever and if I want my car to run and use the windows my hands are tied. There is no charge from Verizon to update my cell phone all the time for updates and such but I’m expected to pay for ford updates. I’m not ok with this and will be looking at other options for future vehicle. They all have their issues but customer service goes along well in acknowledging the problems Google window problems and wind noise and updates clearly noted

Engine compartment hood latch. thankfully, I was at a red light when the incident occurred. While stopped at the light, i heard a loud "cluck" sound. My daughter asked if we were hit, I looked around we were not. I looked at the dashboard and noticed that the "Hood ajar" was illuminated. The hood spontaneously just opened on its own. It has not been inspected at this time, I had an appointment at Ford for an oil change on 4/22/25 and I told them about the incident. I then had to ask them to look at it. they said they couldn't, that I would have to have an seperate appointment for that.

Backup camera on the car has a clear picture but does not have a usable field of view. The problem occurred sometime in mid 2024 and was first reported to the dealer in Sep 2024. When in reverse, at 20' behind the vehicle you can see approximately 1' of height. The dealership seems to have no specs against which to compare this and simply reports that since the image is clear, it is the expected image. The camera system was recalled recently, but even with a new physical camera, the vehicle still has this issue.

Feb 7, 2025

Front panel of panoramic sunroof "exploded" into the vehicle while traveling on interstate without any sign of a projectile or rock hitting the vehicle. Outdoor temperature was -3 degrees Fahrenheit with indoor temperature set to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Glass rained down into the vehicle, startling the driver (myself) and passengers. One piece of tempered glass went into one rear seat passenger's eye and was successfully removed without extensive injury. Reported incident to Ford Dealer and had dealer service department inspect the vehicle. Attempted to have it repaired under manufacturer warranty. Coverage was declined from the manufacturer (Ford) and was subsequently repaired via personal comprehensive vehicle insurance. There was no indication of an issue with the vehicle prior to incident. It is concerning this happened without warning and we were lucky to have not gotten into an accident following the event.

Jan 25, 2025

Sunroof shattered while driving the speed limit of 55 on a normal roadway. I had my [XXX] son in the backseat when it exploded. NO dents/scratches/dings/chips were present on glass prior to shattering. No object hit the sunroof either. Furthermore, It could have caused much more severe injury to our faces and eyes due to glass shattering everywhere. This caused a danger and hazard to myself and my infant while at a high rate of speed which caused me to jolt and could have caused issues with other drivers on the road. I started my car to warm it up because it snowed the night before. When I went to get into my car there was water dripping out of my overhead light. Water and ice was all over my center console. I was parked facing down hill. All of the lights in my car were flickering. My headlights were also flickering I'm assuming because I was parked facing downhill the water ran towards the front of my car. I had it towed to my ford dealership through the Ford app. I called the next day and they told me it was most likely due to a clogged sunroof drain tube and even though my bumper to bumper warranty just expired 20 days before when I financed my lease, the cost of the repairs would be on me because cleaning the drainage tubes is part of routine maintenance. I brought up the fact that I purchased an extended warranty that covered seals and gaskets and they said it didn't cover water leaks. They also told me they wouldn't get around to looking at it until sometime next week and that I couldn't not get a rental until it was diagnosed. So now I am stuck with no vehicle. I have no idea the extent of the damage and I can't afford it fix it since I just put my life savings down as a down-payment on the car on the end of November and have a $335/month car payment for the next 6 years because I thought purchasing my lease would be safe because I know I took care of my car and had it maintenced under fords maintenance schedule.

Sun roof fabric issue became undone (sags) and blocks view out your rear view mirror.

Oct 27, 2024

the entertainment screen goes black. screen has been black for 2 weeks. will still show back up camera when in reverse. screen does not work other than back up camera. unable to change air/heat settings. the back right seat will not lay down. the electrical component will not work. there is no manual way to let down seat. 3rd row seat stuck in up right position.

Sep 25, 2024

When the car is put into reverse. The reverse camera display is delayed in showing or shows a blue screen in lieu of the rear view. It started to happen around the 26 or 28,000 mile mark.

Sep 12, 2023

Since I've purchase my vehicle in May 2022, the back up camera has presented a black or blue screen. Ford has not found a solution in over a year. Prior to purchase I was not informed of this issue.

Jul 26, 2023

Windshield stress crack developed overnight. First notices July 18th as small crack (less than 6 inches) on right top third. Over the week grew to 8 inches. Less than 10,000 miles and under 1 year. Ford considers this a wear item and is only covered for 90 days. Currently available for inspection. Not driving car in case the windshield completely fails. Windshield will be inspected and replaced by insurance.

The power lift gate was making a popping noise, so I took the truck to Ford for repair. They supposedly repaired the truck, but the power lift gate started opening and closing on its own and at random times. It also started to rain through the back glass, which caused mild in the truck. The warning states that the power loft gate should be completely closed or it can result in death, but it wasn’t able to close at all times. Ours safety was out at risk due to the power lift gate opening and closing at random times, which could have caused me to be hit, other drivers to be injured, and theft of property from other people having access while the power lift gate didn’t properly close. The problem was confirmed by a dealer. I showed video as well. The manufacturer has inspected the vehicle component, but they broke a panel on the driver door and tried to glue it on, so the manufacturer is dishonest. They also advised that I have a “bad car” but refuse to do anything. No it was no warnings.

1. My 2022 Explorer limited purchased mid Dec 2022 began having issues during shifting of gears and would stutter before jolting or would drive in the opposite direction when shifting btwn gears starting in Feb 2023. Ford would not give me an appt until may. In March I put the car in reverse in front of my child's daycare, it drove forward, hit a large vase and damaged the front end. Ford was contacted and again told me the earliest they could get me an appt was may. I recorded all events from there forward. In May my car was inspected and numerous error codes were found. One of which was a "gear shift lock solenoid/actuator circuit 'A' range/performance". They ultimately fixed the faulty shifter. But refuse to repair the front end damage to the vehicle caused by the malfunctioning shifter stating "I should have braked". There was a list of error codes they told me have been addressed but on the final invoice it also states one has not. But they have refused to provide me with a list of interpretation for the errors codes. 2. This faulty gear shift could have resulted in severe injury to myself or a bystander. When I contacted ford after the accident they continued to disregard my safety concerns and would not provide me w an early appointment to investigate these serious problems 3. See answer 1 4. No. The car functioned normally from purchase date in mid December to mid-late Feb when symptoms began without warning and occurred intermittently until the car was assessed the first week of May

May 17, 2023

There has been an open safety recall on this vehicle for about 5 months with NO indication of how they are going to fix it or when. This is preventing me from running my business using the vehicle because the vehicle cannot have any recalls on it. I have called two Ford dealerships and contacted Ford help line several times and they do not have any solution.

I can hear the fuel in my gas tank "sloshing" around. It is most obvious at slower speed when backing and pulling forward. I would assume there are some sort of "baffles" missing in the fuel tank. I have had the "sloshing" sounds confirmed by the local Ford dealer's service department. They say they can not resolve the matter. In Jan 2003, I reported the issue to Ford Customer Service (Case #4069-6889). I am not sure this situation presents a safety hazard but wanted to report it to NHTSA for consideration, and for the record. Thank you.

Apr 8, 2023 Fire

I was driving (at a fairly low speed) recently when my vehicle began driving erratically. I pulled over and noticed that there was smoke in the passenger compartment. I exited the vehicle and walked to the passenger side (out of traffic) and opened the passenger door to retrieve my cell phone. At that point there was a burst of flame upon opening the door, and the fire quickly spread to the passenger compartment.

The sun roof/ moon roof shattered while going down the road at 70 MPH. Glass showered down on my wife as she was traveling until she could stop and get the glass cleaned up.

Jan 30, 2023

Driver side Axel was out when I took my car in for my oil change and tire rotation. I was unaware of this issue due to this being my first oil change and tire rotation. I have called the dealership service department where I purchased the vehicle and also the dealership service who serviced my vehicle. I then called Ford Motor to report issue and was advised to contact NHTSA. The claim number [XXX]. I was informed that I would have to wait until my vehicle breakdown in order to be covered or wait for a recall through Ford. I was told I would have to pay out of pocket if I seek further service for fixing the issue without Fords recall and there is a program that will pay me back if one becomes available. I was advised by Taylor Ford that they have come across a few of these issues with the exact same problem in the 2022 Explorers. Brand new 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline purchased May 14th of this year. While accelerating, our vehicle is giving off strong exhaust fumes through the cabin. The fowl odor coming through the vents made a Carbon monoxide monitor go off. The smells have been intermittent and have no rhyme or reason when this occurs, but only when we are driving wether it's on the freeways, or through residential areas. This has been a consumer safety concern while driving my family around in fumes, since we purchased the vehicle, and to include we've made 8 trips to the dealership and they've attempted to pin point and rectify our complaint and unfortunatley haven't been successful. It has been to another dealership for a second opinion, and they have too, smelled the odors while driving but didn't inspect further. The vehicle only has 5700 miles on it and is not safe to drive. It is back at the dealership we purchased it from, and further diagnosing has been conducted, but the service manager claims they have found no leaks. They also replaced two components under warranty that haven't been related to our complaint.

On July 10th, 3:45 pm, after being parked in a parking lot for an hour in the sun, I opened the rear driver side door, the moonroof made a "pop" sound, then glass showered down. The glass popped UP, not down, and we were not in motion. Nor had we heard any impacts while driving at any time previously.

Purchased car 5/31/22 from Apple Ford, 8800 Stanford Blvd, Columbia MD 21045. Started hearing sounds of rodent infestation 2 days later. Sporadic scurrying sounds that seemed to be coming from metal frame area above headliner in the car. Have recorded the sounds and attempted to share this verification of infestation with dealership, to no avail. As disabled vet w/anxiety/ptsd, scurrying sounds are unnerving, rodents are known to cause wiring damage which affects vehicle safety, sudden emergence of rodents when operating vehicle is additional safety hazard to myself, my passengers and others. Dealership removed headliner and stated no indication of rodents found. I repeatedly notified dealer the sound is one of clawing/scurrying on metal and that I have video evidence that verifies rodent infestation. So far, there are no warning lights, etc or other symptoms of the problem.
