TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1998 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, AN ABNORMAL NOISE WAS EXHIBITED FROM OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT LATER NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE FUEL TANK STRAP WAS FRACTURED DUE TO RUST CORROSION. IN 2011, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V385000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE); HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED FOR THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. THE CONTACT STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL TANK STRAPS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS FOUND TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V385000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DENIED ASSISTANCE WITH THE FUEL TANK REPLACEMENT, BECAUSE THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V385000 FUEL SYSTEM (GASOLINE: STORAGE: TANK ASSEMBLY: MOUNTING). THE CONTACT ALSO RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V385000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:MOUNTING). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FUEL ODOR.THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD ONLY REPAIR THE FUEL TANK STRAPS AND NOT THE FUEL TANK BECAUSE THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE BRACKETS THAT HOLD THE FUEL TANK STRAPS HAVE RUSTED ALONG WITH THE STRAPS TO THE POINT THAT THE TANK MAY FALL OFF. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM THAT CAUSED THE FAILURE OF THE STRAPS RUSTING THROUGH. THIS CAN CREATE A FIRE EVEN AFTER THE STRAPS HAVE BEEN REPLACED BECAUSE THE WHOLE STRUCTURE OF THE FUEL TANK SUPPORT SYSTEM IS FAILING. *TR

ON 8/22/2011 THE FUEL TANK FELL COMPLETELY OUT OF MY 1998 F-150 TRUCK DUE TO THE FUEL TANK STRAPS BREAKING. THE FUEL TANK AND STRAPS HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE TANK RUPTURED WHEN IT WAS DRAGGING THE ROAD UNDERNEATH MY TRUCK BEFORE I COULD COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE EMERGENCY REPAIRS WERE MADE BY MYSELF AND DURING THIS PROCESS I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR HAD BROKE AS WELL DURING THE INCIDENT. THE SENSOR WAS PRICED AT THE LOCAL FORD DEALER FOR $102.00 BUT THIS PART HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED AND I AM CURRENTLY OPERATING MY VEHICLE WITHOUT THIS SAFETY DEVICE. I HAVE RECEIVED AN OFFICIAL SAFETY RECALL NOTICE 11S21 FROM THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE AND THE RECALL HAS BEEN PERFORMED TO MY VEHICLE EVEN THOUGH THE PARTS WERE BRAND NEW. I HAVE ALSO RECEIVED REIMBURSEMENT FROM A LOCAL FORD DEALER (DONLEY FORD OF SHELBY, OH) FOR THE FUEL TANK AND THE STRAPS. THE DEALER WOULD NOT REPLACE THE SENSOR BECAUSE THEY DID NOT GET AUTHORIZATION FROM FORD TO DO SO. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER CARE AND SPOKE WITH A SUPERVISOR NAMED [XXX]. HE INFORMED ME THAT FORD IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE SENSOR SINCE THERE IS NO WAY TO DETERMINE IF IT HAD BEEN REPLACED PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. I PURCHASED THE TRUCK WHEN IT WAS APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR OLD AND THIS PART HAS NEVER BEEN REPLACED. A COMPLAINT # 8802723 WAS FILED WITH EASTERN MICHIGAN BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU ASKING FOR FORD TO REPLACE THE SENSOR, BUT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO HELP ME AND HAVE CLOSED THE COMPLAINT. FORD'S REASON FOR NOT REPLACING THE PART WAS BECAUSE I DID THE REPAIRS MYSELF. I FEEL FORD IS LIABLE FOR THE PART AND SHOULD SUPPLY ME WITH A REPLACEMENT PART. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR ASSISTANCE IN CONVINCING FORD THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PART SINCE IS WAS BROKE AS THE RESULT OF A KNOWN RECALL ISSUE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE FUEL TANK STRAPS TO THE VEHICLE. BUT, IMMEDIATELY AFTER, FUEL BEGAN TO SPRAY ONTO THE GROUND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO REFUEL. THE DEALER EXPLAINED IT WAS CLEARLY RELATED TO THE FAILURE REPAIRS AS IDENTIFIED BY THE RECALL HOTLINE AND THAN MANY CUSTOMERS WERE EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THAT THE HOTLINE APPROVED THE REPAIRS AND TANK REPLACEMENT FOR SOME AND THEN ARBITRARILY NOT FOR OTHERS. THE RECALL HOTLINE REFUSED TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS OTHER THAN THE FUEL TANK STRAP REPLACEMENT. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT DUE TO THE RECALL REFUSAL, HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR TO REPLACE THE FUEL TANK. I MEAN, IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A WEEK LATER, AND THE STRAPS FAILED. WAS TOLD THAT THEY ONLY INSTALL THE GAS TANK STRAPS AND THAT'S IT. WHETHER THEY ARE CONNECTED TO FRAME OR NOT THAT IS RUSTING IS NOT THEIR CONCERN AND IS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. THIS IS PREPOSTEROUS. SINCE THE SAME METAL WAS PROBABLY USED THROUGHOUT THE TRUCK AND CAUSED THE RECALL OF THE GAS TANK STRAPS -- A SAFETY RECALL, SHOULDN'T THEY BE SURE TO APPLY THESE TO KNOWN GOOD STRUCTURE AND IF SUCH STRUCTURE SUFFERS FROM THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE GAS TANK STRAPS, SHOULDN'T THAT BE COVERED? WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING ON A LEVEL, PAVED TWO-LANE RURAL ROAD, THE FRONT FUEL TANK STORAGE MOUNTING STRAP BROKE. THE FRONT OF THE FUEL TANK DROPPED DOWN AND CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE ROAD SURFACE CAUSING IT TO BE DRAGGED. THE TANK WAS PUSHED BACKWARDS AND IT BROKE OFF THE BRAKE LINE TO THE REAR AXLE CREATING A LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. THE VEHICLE COASTED TO A STOP AND IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS PUNCTURED WHERE IT HAD DRAGGED ON THE PAVEMENT, CAUSING A LOSS OF APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN GALLONS OF GASOLINE ON THE SURFACE OF THE ROAD. WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH THE STRAP THAT HOLDS THE GAS TANK IN PLACE BROKE. BY THE TIME WE GOT TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER, THE GAS TANK HAD A LARGE HOLE IN IT FROM SCRAPING ON THE ROAD & 20+ GALLONS OF GASOLINE WAS RUNNING OUT BENEATH OUR VEHICLE. WE WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY THERE WAS NO FIRE. WE HAD TO PAY $240 FOR A FLATBED TO GET THE VEHICLE BACK HOME & ANOTHER $500 TO PUT ON A NEW GAS TANK & NEW STRAPS. NOT TO MENTION THE $65 IN GAS THAT POURED OUT ON THE ROAD. I THINK A WARNING FROM FORD WOULD HAVE SAVED US FROM WHAT EASILY COULD HAVE ENDED IN DISASTER.

I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A SMOOTH, PAVED ROAD, WHEN THE TWO STRAPS THAT SUPPORT THE VEHICLE FUEL TANK BROKE, AND THE TANK FELL TO THE ROAD. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OFF THE MAIN ROAD AND INVESTIGATED. 1998 FORD F150 FUEL TANK STRAP FAILURE: THE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND I WAS PREPARING TO DROP THE FUEL TANK TO PERFORM THE NECESSARY REPAIRS WHEN I REALIZED THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE TANK UP WAS THE BRUSH GUARD; THE STRAPS WERE RUSTED/ROTTED OFF AND THE FLEX HOSES FROM THE FILL TUBE TO THE TANK WERE STRETCHED OUT. THIS IS REGARDING A 1998 FORD F150. I WAS DRIVING ON A NORMAL ASPHALT ROAD, ABOUT 30MPG, JUST THROUGH AN INTERSECTION. THE FRONT OF THE GAS TANK DROPPED SUDDENLY. BY THE TIME I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER THE ROAD ABRADED A HOLE CLEAN THROUGH THE FRONT BOTTOM EDGE OF THE TANK. IT WAS RAINING HEAVILY, OTHERWISE I BELIEVE THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE. THIS LEFT A TRAIL OF GAS ABOUT 1/4 MILE LONG ON A BUSY ROAD, AND A LARGE GASOLINE PUDDLE THAT GREW FOR 15 MINUTES AFTER WE STOPPED. WE GOT AWAY FROM THE TRUCK AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. WE LOST THE FULL TANK OF GAS AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE GAS TANK WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP AT A COST OF OVER $700. I DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL GAS TANK. I HAVE A 1998 FORD F150 PICK UP IN WELL MAINTAINED CONDITION WITH 165K MILES. ON A RECENT TRIP WE WERE DRIVING AT A LOW SPEED (THANK GOD) THROUGH PORT HURON MICHIGAN. UNKNOWN TO ME, ONE OF TWO METAL STRAPS THAT HOLD THE FUEL TANK TO THE FRAME HAD CORRODED THROUGH. THE ENTIRE WEIGHT OF THE GAS TANK WAS SUPPORTED BY ONE REMAINING STRAP. AFTER FUELING (3/4 TANK), WHILE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE LAST STRAP BROKE AND THE TANK FELL TO THE PAVEMENT. THE GRINDING OF THE TANK ON THE PAVEMENT RUBBED A SMALL HOLE IN THE TANK AND CAUSED A MINOR LEAK. BECAUSE WE WERE TRAVELING SO SLOW, WE QUICKLY PULLED OVER AND THE DAMAGE WAS CONTAINED. WITH THE HELP OF A POLICE OFFICER, I RAISED THE TANK ENOUGH TO GET MY CAR JACK UNDER IT AND THEN STRAPPED IT TO THE FRAME RAILS WITH A SECTION OF ROPE. THE ONLY THING HOLDING THE TANK TO THE TRUCK WAS THE FUEL LINE WHICH WAS NOT SEVERED SO I WAS ABLE TO START IT AND I DROVE TO NEARBY FORD DEALER FOR REPAIRS. THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER IF IT HAD HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I WAS ONLY ONE MILE FROM GETTING ON I94 WHEN THE TANK FELL DOWN. FORD HAD NO RECALLS FOR THIS ISSUE AND OFFERED NO COMPENSATION, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO DESIGN DETAIL TO PREVENT THE TANK FROM FALLING TO THE ROAD WHEN THE STRAPS FAIL. THIS DESIGN WAS RELEASED IN 1996 SO MANY OWNERS COULD SOON EXPERIENCE THE SAME CORROSION FAILURE THAT LED TO MY INCIDENT. A SERIOUS FIRE OR INJURIES COULD EASILY BE PREVENTED BY STAINLESS STEEL STRAPS OR A FRAME DETAIL THAT PREVENTS THE TANK FROM COMING DOWN TO THE PAVEMENT. ON MONDAY AUGUST 11, 2003 I NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE ON MY 1998 FORD F-150 PICKUP. I FOUND THAT GASOLINE WAS RUNNING ALONG THE DRIVER SIDE FRAME AND LEAKING RATHER HEAVILY ONTO THE PAYMENT. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO A NEARBY AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE CENTER FOR EXAMINATION. I WAS SUBSEQUENTLY ADVISED THAT THE FUEL LINE HAD A CRACK AND WAS THE CAUSE FOR THE LEAKING FUEL. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE TECHNICAN THE CRACK APPEARED TO BE UNKNOWN INCLUDING ANY DAMAGE. I HAD EXTENDED WARRANTY INSURANCE WITH GEICO FOR THE $277.87 REPLACEMENT LINE. SINCE I HAD A $250.00 DEDUCTIBLE, THE COST WAS MOSTLY BORNE BY ME. THE OWNER OF THE SERVICE CENTER, SAID HE NEVER HAD A CRACKED FUEL LINE IN ALL HIS YEARS OF AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE. I ALSO IN MY 50 YEARS OF OWNING VEHICLES HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED SUCH A INCIDENT. MY BIGGEST CONCERN WAS THE EXTRAORDINARY DANGER THIS TYPE OF LEAK COULD CAUSE A MOTORIST, WITH GASOLINE LEAKING ON TO THE PAYMENT. OBVIOUSLY A DISCARDED CIGARET OR OTHER IGNITION COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS FIRE AND PERHAPS INJURY OR DEATH.I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS IS SOMETHING YOU ARE INTERESTED? GAS RAIL LEAKS ONTO THE MANIFOLD OF THE ENGINE. ALSO, THE "O" RINGS HARDEN AND THE GAS JUST STARTS LEAKING OUT AND VEHICLE OVERHEATED. CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER, AND THEY TOLD HIM IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE CONSUMER WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. *AK
