The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and turned off the vehicle suddenly caught on fire and was destroyed. The fire department was called to the impoundment lot and extinguished the flames which came from the engine compartment. A fire report was taken at the scene. The cause of the fire was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 190,000.

WE PURCHASED OUR 2001 F150 SUPERCREW USED. I AM A MECHANIC, SO THE FIRST THING I DO WHEN BUYING A USED VEHICLE IS INSPECT IT THOROUGHLY. THERE WERE A FEW MINOR ISSUES, BUT ONE STOOD OUT AS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IT SEEMS TO BE EXTREMELY COMMON TO ALL 1997-2003 F-150S. SYMPTOMS - THIS ISSUE MAINLY AFFECTS THE REAR LEFT AND RIGHT BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, AND HAZARD LIGHTS. THESE LIGHTS, PARTICULARLY BRAKE LIGHTS, CAN CEASE TO FUNCTION ENTIRELY, INTERMITTENTLY AND UNKNOWN TO THE DRIVER. CAUSE - THERE IS A WIRE HARNESS WHICH CONNECTS TO THE "MULTI - FUNCTION SWITCH". THIS WIRE HARNESS IS PULLED WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TILTED DOWN. AS A RESULT, THE CONNECTOR OR INDIVIDUAL TERMINALS CAN BECOME LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED. THIS PROBLEM IS MOST PREVALENT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE DOWN POSITION, BUT ONCE LOOSE CAN HAPPEN AT ANY POSITION AND ANY DRIVING SITUATION. SOLUTION - REPAIR OR REPLACE WITH MOTORCRAFT PART# WPT607, AND ENSURE THE HARNESS HAS ENOUGH SLACK TO ALLOW STEERING WHEEL TILT WITHOUT TENSION ON THE HARNESS. IN OUR CASE, I REPLACED THE CONNECTOR AND PULLED THE WIRES ENOUGH TO ALLOW SLACK FOR STEERING WHEEL TILT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS ISSUE ONLINE, AND IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED BY F150 OWNERS. I HAVE PICTURES BUT THE FILE SIZES ARE OVER 5MB.

THE DEALER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 275,000.

ALL I KNOW IS I WAS AT A NEIGHBORS FOR AROUND 1 1/2 HOURS AND WE HEAR A LOUD BOOM. WE RAN OUT SIDE AND MY TRUCK HOOD WAS ON FIRE, IT BURNED EVERYTHING VISIBLE ON TOP OF THE MOTOR AND TOWARD THE DRIVER FIREWALL . IT BUSTED THE DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND COMPLETELY BURNED EVERYTHING VISIBLE UNDER THE HOOD. THE DASH COMPONENTS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE ARE NOT BAD, UNKNOWN OF INTERNAL DAMAGE.I'M NOT SURE WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM. I DID GO TO THE RECALL SITE TO SEE IF THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOMETHING I DID FIND THIS CONTROL SWITCH FOR SPEED RECALL AND NOT SURE IF IT APPLIES TO MINE.EVEN THOUGH IT BROUGHT IT UP WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN #. I DID RECEIVE A RECALL ON THE GAS TANK STRAPS BUT DID NOT REPLACE THEM THEY WERE IN GREAT SHAPE. BUT I DID NOT RECEIVE ON ON THIS. I DO HAVE PICTURES IF YOU NEED THEM. THANKS

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AUTO THEFT SENSOR ILLUMINATED SEVERAL TIMES AND CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE RANDOMLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO REPLACED THE KEY, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO HAVE EXTREME DIFFICULTY WITH TURNING THE KEY TO START THE IGNITION AND THE AUTO THEFT WARNING LAMP CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I KEEP HAVING MAJOR ISSUES WITH MY TRUCK EJECTING SPARK PLUGS FROM THE ENGINE WHICH IS BREAKING NOT ONLY MY SPARK PLUGS BUT MY COIL PACK AS WELL. THIS IS REDICULIOUS. THE FIRST TIME I WAS AT A LIGHT AT A DEAD STOP WHEN I HEAR A LOUD BANGING NOISE LIKE SOMETHING EXPLODED THEN MY TRUCK STARTED RUNNING ROUGH AND HAD TO GET IT TOWED. IT STRANDED US 45 MINUTES FROM HOME. THE SECOND TIME WAS TWO DAYS AGO ON MARCH 18 I WAS DRIVING THROUGH A DRIVE THRU AGAIN AT A DEAD STOP AND HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND HAD THE SAME ISSUE. AGAIN MY SPARK PLUG WAS EJECTED AND COIL PACK BROKEN. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN CYLINDER 1 AND WAS REPAIRED THEN ONE MONTH LATER THE NEXT TIME CYLINDER 2 EJECTED. 5 MINUTES AFTER IT WAS REPAIRED AND HAD NEW PLUG AND COIL PACK IT AGAIN EJECTED. IM UPSET BECAUSE I CAN NO LONGER DRIVE MY TRUCK. IF FORD DOESNT FIX THIS I WILLNEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER FORD. NOW IT IS USELESS SITTING IN MY GARAGE TAKIN UP SPACE. *TR

REAR LIGHTS, INCLUDING BRAKE, TURN SIGNALS, AND HAZARD LIGHTS QUIT WORKING. THIS ISSUE CAN BE FOUND ON MANY ONLINE FORD F-150 FORUMS. THE STEERING COLUMN WIRING IS TOO SHORT, AND BREAKAGE IN THE WIRE, OR CONNECTORS CAN OCCUR WITH THE TILT STEERING MECHANISM. THE TILT STEERING MECHANISM AND SHORT WIRING HAS CAUSED THE CONNECTION TO BREAK INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN TRIM ON OUR VEHICLE, WHICH CAUSED THE LIGHTS TO STOP FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I INSPECTED THE PROBLEM, AND FOUND THE CONNECTOR CAN MOVE FREELY. I FEEL THIS IS AN ISSUE SINCE I AM ABLE TO LOCATE MANY OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE FROM 1997 UP TO 2001 FORD F-150S. *TR

I PULLED OVER RIGHT AWAY, IT SOUNDED LIKE A BAD EXHAUST LEAK. I LOOKED ALL UNDER THE TRUCK AND COULDN'T FIND ANY LEAK , SO I HAD MY SON TOW ME HOME , AS I OPENED THE HOOD AND STARTED THE TRUCK I HEARD THE NOISE COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE MOTOR, AFTER LOOKING CLOSER WITH A FLASHLIGHT I FOUND THE PROBLEM THE NUMBER 7 PLUG HAD BEEN BLOWN RIGHT OF THE HEAD AND WAS LAYING ON TOP OF THE INTAKE,BREAKING THE COIL PACK IN THE PROCESS. IT STRIPPED THE THREADS RIGHT OUT OF THE HEAD,,,I DID FIND A REPAIR KIT AT NAPA FOR $220.00 AND IT STILL IS NOT RUNNING RIGHT , AND I ALSO LEARNED THEY ONLY MAKE A REPAIR KIT FOR THE FORD MOTORS NO OTHER MAKE HAS THIS REPAIR KIT,, SO IT SOUND LIKE FORD HAS A DEFECT WITH THE HEADS NO OTHER MAKE HAS THIS ISSUE. *TR

I OWN A 2001 FORD F150 LARIAT 1/2 TON PICKUP TRUCK WITH 95,000 ORIGINAL MILES ON IT. ON MY WAY TO WORK I NOTICED IT BEGAN RUNNING VERY ERRATIC AND THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE SHOP. THE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK REVEALED THE #7 COIL WIRE WAS IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT. THE SHOP ADVISED ME TO CHANGE ALL COIL WIRES AND SPARK PLUGS AS I WAS NEARING THE 100,000 MILE MARK, THE COST WAS $1,200. I OPTED TO JUST HAVE THE SPARK PLUGS CHANGED AND THE # 7 COIL WIRE REPLACED FOR $240. THE NEXT DAY THE SHOP CALLED AND SAID THERE WAS A BIG PROBLEM, THE #7 SPARK PLUG BROKE OFF DURING THE EXTRACTION. THE $240.00 COST IS NOW $1800.00. THE SHOP SAID THE HEAD WOULD NEED TO BE REMOVED TO REPLACE THE BROKEN SPARK PLUG. MAY 19, 2011 AT AROUND 4:20 AM WE WERE AWAKEN BY OUR NEIGHBORS THAT OUR TRUCK WAS ON FIRE. OUR 2001 FORD F150 WAS ON FIRE, AN EXPLOSION HAD MADE A HUGE HOLE IN THE HOOD ON THE FRONT OF THE DRIVER SIDE. THE TRUCK HAD LAST BEEN DRIVEN THE MORNING OF MAY 17, 2011 AND HAD BEEN SITTING IN OUR DRIVEWAY SINCE THEN. THE FIREMEN SAID THE FIRE WAS DUE TO ELECTRICAL WIRING. WE ALWAYS KEPT UP WITH ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE. WE HAD NO IDEA OF THE PROBLEMS FORDS WERE HAVING, WE NOW ONLY HAVE ONE VEHICLE TO GET AROUND AND THE WORST PART IS THAT IT'S A 2004 FORD F250 WHICH COULD ALSO BE A RECALL VEHICLE. I WENT FISHING ONE EARLY MORNING AND I STOPPED FOR GAS AND NOTICED THAT MY LIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN OFF. I NORMALLY KEEP THE SWITCH IN THE AUTO-DETECT MODE. I SWITCHED TO OFF AND THEY STILL WOULD NOT TURN OFF. AFTER GETTING TO THE DOCK, I TURNED OFF THE MOTOR AND LOCKED IT. MY F-150'S HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN OFF AND WOULD BLINK ON AND OFF. THE SWITCH WOULD NOT WORK, NOR DID LOCKING THE VEHICLE TURN OFF THE LIGHTS. I EXPECTED THE BATTERY SAVER WOULD ACTIVATE TO TURN OFF THE EXTERIOR LAMPS. IT ALSO FAILED. I THOUGHT THAT MAYBE THE NEIGHBOR KIDS WERE PLAYING WITH FIREWORKS, BUT IT SOUNDED PRETTY CLOSE TO THE HOUSE ON THE GARAGE SIDE. WHEN I LOOKED IN THAT DIRECTION I SAW AN ORANGE GLOW. I WENT AROUND THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE AND SAW MY TRUCK ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I RAN INTO THE HOUSE, CALLED MY WIFE TO GET UP, GET OUR DAUGHTER, GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND CALL 911. 911 TOLD US TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND AS FAR AWAY AS POSSIBLE. WE EVACUATED OUR HOME W/ OUR DOGS IN TOW AND WE ALL PROCEEDED TO WATCH IN HORROR (WITH THE ENTIRE SUBDIVISION) AS THE TRUCK WENT UP IN FLAMES AND SMOKE, NOT KNOWING IF THE HOUSE WOULD BE NEXT. UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES MY TRUCK WOULD HAVE BEEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE. MY DAUGHTER'S BEDROOM IS RIGHT ABOVE. THE FIRE CHIEF SAID WE WOULD HAVE LOST OUR HOUSE NO QUESTION AND VERY POSSIBLY OUR LIVES IF THE TRUCK WAS IN THE GARAGE. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAS BEEN OUT TO LOOK AT THE TRUCK; IT'S DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. EVERYTHING FROM THE FRONT END THROUGH THE CAB IS BURNED UP OR A MESS OF METAL, PLASTIC, ETC. MELTED ON MY DRIVEWAY. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN A FIGURE FOR THE TRUCK AND ASKED TO SETTLE. NO FURTHER DISCUSSION AS TO THE DAMAGE TO MY WIFE'S CAR, THE BOAT, AND RUINED CONCRETE DRIVE. THE FORD DEALERS RESPONSE WAS "WELL, FORD IS A BIG COMPANY AND HAS A LOT OF POWERFUL ATTORNEYS." HOW SICK IS THAT?! WE'RE AT A LOSS. WHAT WE SAW WAS TRAUMATIC. 1 MONTH AGO MY 2001 F150 WOULD NOT CRANK. I CHECKED THE FUSE AND THE #6 FUSE (5 AMP) HAD BLOWN. I REPLACED IT WITH A NEW 5 AMP FUSE AND IT BLEW AGAIN. I CALLED OUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND ASKED THAT THE TRUCK BE TOWED AS WE WANTED TO KNOW WHY IT WAS BLOWING THE FUSE EACH TIME WE REPLACED IT. THE REPAIR SHOP HAD THE TRUCK FOR 2 DAYS AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM ABOUT 10 DAYS LATER IT BLEW A FUSE AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS THE #15 FUSE(STILL A 5 AMP FUSE) AND THIS TIME THE TRUCK WOULD CRANK BUT WOULD NOT GO OUT OF PARK. CALLED A TOW TRUCK AGAIN AND HAD IT TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP THAT NIGHT. I SPOKE WITH THE REPAIR SHOP OWNER ON SAT JULY 1 AND TOLD HIM IT WAS A SECONDARY VEHICLE AND AS THIS WAS A HOLIDAY WEEKEND NOT TO RUSH. JUST WHEN THEY OPENED BACK UP AFTER THE HOLIDAY IF HE COULD GET IT FIXED THEN. ON THE MORNING OF JULY 4TH 2006 WE WERE CALLED AROUND 10:30 AM BY THE REPAIR SHOP OWNER, WHO WAS ALSO A TENANT IN THIS BUILDING, THAT OUR TRUCK HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE DURING THE NIGHT AND WAS A TOTAL LOSS. HE ASKED THAT WE COME RIGHT OVER. WE CALLED OUR INSURANCE ON THE WAY AS WE LUCKILY STILL HAD FULL COVERAGE EVEN THOUGH OUR TRUCK WAS PAID FOR. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP HAD ALL THE BAY DOORS CUT OPEN BY THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DURING THE NIGHT(JULY 3RD) AND THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER CARS IN THE BUILDING THAT WERE DAMAGED ALSO. AT LEAST ONE OF WHICH WAS A TOTAL LOSS ALSO. THE BUILDING HAD WATER AND SMOKE DAMAGE EVEN IN ITS RESTROOM. THE REPAIR SHOP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO OPEN ALL WEEK AND WHO KNOWS HOW LARGE HIS DEDUCTIBLE, ETC IS. I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT MY FORD 2003 EXCURSION HAS A FIRE RECALL ON IT. I AM TERRIFIED TO HAVE MY CHILDREN IN IT OR HAVE IT NEAR MY HOME OR SOMEONE ELSE'S AS I DON'T WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. I HAVE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD OF 26 HOUSES. MY 2001 FORD F150 XLT CREW CAB EJECTED A SPARK PLUG ON 03-03-06. THE EJECTED SPARK PLUG CAME FROM THE SECOND CYLINDER FROM THE FIREWALL, ON THE PASSENGERS SIDE. THE ENGINE IN THIS TRUCK IS A 5.4 TRITON. THE FUEL RAIL IS IN THE FLIGHT PATH OF THE SPARK PLUG WHEN IT BECOMES A PROJECTILE. THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A MAJOR DISASTER, IF THE FUEL RAIL RUPTURES. BECAUSE WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING THE COIL ON THE SPARK PLUG CAN AND WILL IGNITE THE SPRAYING FUEL. THE CYLINDER HEADS ON THESE 5.4 TRITONS ENGINE MUST HAVE A MAJOR DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BY FORD MOTOR COMPANY, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. *JB

PRELIMINARY DATA.. FORD F150 2001 SUPERCREW WAS LEFT UNATTENDED WHILE SHOPPING. UPON RETURN I NOTED A PUDDLE OF FLUID THAT WAS NOT PRESENT EARLIER UNDER THE VEHICLE. UPON LEANING DOWN ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT TO INSPECT FOR THE SOURCE OF THE LEAK SMALL FLAMES WERE NOTED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. UPON OPENING THE HOOD FOR FURTHER INSPECTION IT WAS NOTED THAT THE REAR DRIVER SIDE OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS ON FIRE (APPEARING TO ME AND OTHER OBSERVERS TO BE ELECTRICAL IN NATURE) WITH THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR COMPLETED MELTED. THE FLAMES FIRST OBSERVED WERE FORCED BY THE MOLTEN PLASTIC DRIPPING DOWN INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS NOTIFIED BUT THANKS TO SOME EMPLOYEES OF THE SHOP AND THE AVAILABILITY THERE OF AN APPROVED EXTINGUISHER, THE FIRE WAS TERMINATED BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT SOME 7 MINUTES LATER. COMMENTS WERE MADE BY OTHERS AND LATER BY INTERNET RESEARCH THAT THE DAMAGE HAS ALL OF THE APPEARANCES OF BEING FORCED BY THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH ISSUE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY UNDER EVALUATION BY A FORD DEALERSHIP AND MY INSURANCE COMPANY. FORTUNATELY THE VEHICLE WAS UNOCCUPIED AT THE TIME AND WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF A STRIP CENTER PARKING LOT WITH NO VEHICLES AROUND IT SHOULD THE FIRE HAD TIME TO DEVELOP FURTHER. THE SECOND ONE LEFT ME AND MY FAMILY (WIFE AND 3 CHILDREN AGE 5 & UNDER) STRANDED IN THE DESERT BETWEEN SAN DIEGO AND EL CENTRO ON INTERSTATE 8.*AK 3) THE PLUGS STRIPPED OUT THE THREADS ON THE HEAD AND AFTERMARKET INSERTS WERE INSTALLED IN ORDER TO INSTALL NEW PLUGS. AFTER DISCUSSING THE PROBLEM WITH A COUPLE OF GARAGES AND DOING SOME ONLINE RESEARCH I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM. IT APPEARS THAT BY FORD DESIGN THEIR ARE ONLY 6 OF THE 12 THREADS ON THE SPARK PLUG THAT ARE ENGAGED IN THE HEAD. AFTER SOME TIME ENGINE VIBRATION AND EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION OF THE HEAD DUE TO HEAT ALLOW THE SPARK PLUG TO LOOSEN UP. AT THAT POINT, THE PLUGS INCREASED MOVEMENT HAS ENOUGH FORCE TO DESTROY THE REMAINING THREADS. FROM THE NUMBER OF REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM, I BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL EITHER RESULT IN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OR A FACTORY RECALL. HOWEVER, I LIKE FORD AS A COMPANY AND HOPE THAT THEY TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE POOR DESIGN BEFORE A SUIT IS FILED.

AFTER GOING BACK THRU THIS WHOLE THING I STARTED THINKING IT HAD TO BE THIS MAIN FUEL RELAY AND DECIDED TO DO SOME TESTING ON MY OWN. I WORK IN ELECTRONICS AND SO I GOT A COUPLE TYCO RELAYS AND A CAN OF FREEZE SPRAY. THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENED I PULLED THE FORD RELAY AND REPLACED IT WITH A NEW ONE - THE TRUCK STARTED RIGHT UP. THE NEXT TIME I GET THE CAN OF FREEZE SPRAY OUT AND COOL THE RELAY AND THE TRUCK STARTS UP. IM FINDING THIS TO BE WARM WEATHER RELATED AND EVERY TIME IT GET HOT OUTSIDE I CAN PLAN ON THE TRUCK NOT STARTING AFTER DRIVING A SHORT TIME AND THEN SHUTTING OFF. IF THE TRUCK SITS BY ITSELF LONG ENOUGH FOR THE RELAY TO COOL DOWN IT WILL START I THINK FORD SHOULD COME UP WILL A LONG TERM FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM INSTEAD OF REPLACING RELAYS.*AK

I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE STARTS TO MAKE A POPPING SOUND. I PULLED OVER AND RAISED THE HOOD. THE #3 SPARK PLUG HAD BLOWN OUT FROM ITS SEATING IN THE CYLINDER HEAD. I HAD THE TRUCK TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE CYLINDER HEAD. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THE FUEL INJECTION RAIL. THE SPARKPLUG IS LOCATED DIRECTLY BELOW THE FUEL RAIL. IF THE SPARK PLUG COMES LOOSE AND IT FLIES INTO THE FUEL RAIL, THE RAIL COULD BURST CAUSING FUEL TO SPRAY INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT IGNITING A FIRE. THE SPARK PLUG PROBLEM WAS TAKEN CARE OF BY FORD, HOWEVER NOTHING WAS DONE TO GUARD THE FUEL RAIL.
