The contact owns a 2001 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon entering the vehicle one day, there was an abnormal fuel odor outside the vehicle. The contact’s husband inspected underneath the vehicle and discovered that the fuel tank had detached from the subframe. The contact stated that prior to becoming aware of the failure, the low fuel warning light was occasionally illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer. The local dealer was contacted, and the contact was informed that there were no open recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 FORD F-150. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO DECELERATE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND POWERED OFF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED A CHUNK OF ICE IN THE CARBURETOR. THE ICE WAS REMOVED AND THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. I FILLED THE FUEL TANK WITH GAS AND DROVE ABOUT 20 MILES. WHILE PULLING INTO A RESTAURANT AT ABOUT 5 TO 10 MPH I WENT THROUGH A VERY SLIGHT DIP. I HEARD A SOFT THUNK AND HEARD SOMETHING DRAGGING ON THE GROUND. IT WAS NOT REAL LOUD SO I SLOWLY PULLED INTO THE PARKING LOT. WHEN I LOOKED UNDER MY VFORD F-150 I NOTICED THAT THE GAS TANK HAD DROPPED DUE TO BOTH STRAPS BREAKING. THE REAR OF THE TANK WAS HELD UP BY THE HOSE GOING TO THE GAS CAP AREA. FORTUNATELY, THIS DID NOT HAPPEN AT HIGH SPEED OR I MAY NOT BE AROUND TO REPORT THE INCIDENT. I CALLED FORD AND THEY STATE THAT THIS VIN NUMBER DID NOT HAVE NAY RECALLS. THE CUSTOMER RESOURCE PERSON (800.392.3673 OPTION 1, 5, 4) STATED THEY WERE NOT AWARE OF ANY GOVERNMENT NUMBER WHERE I COULD CALL IN THIS COMPLAINT. I QUICKLY DID A WEB SEARCH AND FOUND THIS NUMBER SO I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THEY DID NOT KNOW ABOUT IT. 2001 FORD F-150. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED DURING ROUTINE USE OF THE TRUCK, THE TRANSMISSION STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP, INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE CAST STEEL GEAR WITHIN THE TRANSMISSION HAD SHATTERED INTO TWO PIECES. IN OCTOBER 2009, DURING AN ANNUAL SAFETY INSPECTION, THE STRAPS HOLDING THE FUEL TANK IN PLACE WERE CORRODED AND ALMOST COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH. IN THE SUMMER OF 2013, FORD MOTOR COMPANY, SENT THE CONSUMER A NOTICE, INFORMING HIM THE FUEL TANK STRAP WERE BEING RECALLED. THE CONSUMER WAS NOT OVERLY CONCERNED, SINCE THEY HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED, FORD SENT ANOTHER RECALL. THE CONSUMER INFORMED FORD, HE HAD THE STRAPS REPLACED. FORD THEN ADVISED THE CONSUMER TO VISIT THE DEALER ABOUT REIMBURSEMENT. THE DEALER WANTED TO SEE WHAT REPAIRS HAD BEEN MADE. ONCE THE TRUCK WAS ON THE LIFT, IT WAS DISCOVERED THE ORIGINAL FAULTY TANK STRAPS HAD CAUSED A WEAKENING IN THE SKIN OF THE FUEL TAN ITSELF AND THAT IT WAS LEAKING GASOLINE THROUGH THE SKIN OF THE TANK. THE TANK WAS LEAKING FUEL AROUND THE AREA WHERE THE STRAPS RUBBED ON THE TANK. FORD WOULD ONLY HONOR THE RECALL, IF THEY REPLACED THE STRAPS. HOWEVER, THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE LEAKING FUEL TANK. *JB
I WAS DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON I-95 WHEN THE DRIVER OF AN ADJACENT VEHICLE ALERTED ME THAT THERE WAS FIRE SHOOTING OUT FROM THE AREA OF THE FUEL FILLER DOOR. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER ONTO THE HIGHWAY MEDIAN AND JUMPED OUT. THE TRUCK WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES, AND THE CAB WAS ON FIRE. ATTEMPTING TO PARK VEHICLE IN PARKING STALL WITH FOOT ON BRAKE STOPPING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE, FOR NO APPARENT REASON, ABRUPTLY ACCELERATED FORWARD STRIKNIG THE VEHICLE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PARKING STALL. THE RESULTING CRASH CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE 2011 GMC SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE AND TO THE FRONT OF THE 2001 FORD F-150. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AN INCIDENT SIMILAR TO THIS HAS OCCURRED. THE FIRST TIME WAS IN AUGUST 2011. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE DEMONSTRATED A SIMILAR PHENOMENA OCCURRED WHEN THE OWNER WAS PARKING THE VEHICLE IN A PARKING STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED IN THE PARKING STALL, THE DRIVER'S FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND THE VEHICLE ABRUPTLY ACCELERATED, FOR NO APPARENT REASON, OVER A CONCRETE PARKING BLOCK. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED INTO THE STREET AS THE DRIVER CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKE, ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE FORD F-150. THE DRIVER WAS UNABLE TO AVOID STRIKING A VEHICLE AFTER ENTERING THE STREET. *TR

A PLASTIC COVER OVER THE REAR PART (TOWARDS THE AXLE) OF THE GAS TANK HAS CAUSED A RUST HOLE IN THE TANK. THE PIECE IS HELD ON WITH 2 STRIPS OF DOUBLE SIDED ADHESIVE AND ATTACHES TO TWO CLIPS ON THE TANK. THE RUST DAMAGE IS UNDER THE ADHESIVE STRIP ON THE BOTTOM CAUSING A VERY SLOW LEAK. I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE FUNCTION IS FOR THIS PLASTIC PIECE AND I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT MY VEHICLE IS THE ONLY ONE AFFECTED BY THIS DESIGN FLAW? *KB
ON 11/11/11 I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN MY 2001 FORD F150 AND WAS APPROXIMATELY 1 AND A HALF BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE WHEN I HIT A POTHOLE AND HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THEN SOME METAL GRINDING OR DRAGGING WHICH I INITIALLY THOUGHT WAS MY EXHAUST THE WAY IT SOUNDED, SO I STOPPED THE TRUCK AND LOOKED UNDERNEATH. THIS IS WHEN I REALIZED THE MAGNITUDE OF THE SITUATION, A STRAP THAT HOLDS MY GAS TANK IN PLACE HAD BROKEN OFF FROM WHAT APPEARS TO BE RUSTED AND THE GAS TANK WAS HANGING BY ONE STRAP . AT THIS TIME I WAS ABOUT 100 FEET FROM MY HOUSE SO I HAD MY SON COME OUT AND I PUSHED THE VEHICLE TO IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS POSTED ANYWHERE. I HAVE RECEIVED THE FORD RECALL FOR THE FUEL TANK STRAPS. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP CALLED ME WHEN I TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR THE REPAIRS AND SAID MY FUEL TANK IS LEAKING. THE FUEL LEAK IS RIGHT BEHIND OR AROUND THE REAR TANK STRAP. I DO HAVE PICTURES IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE IT. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DIDN'T HESITATE TO TELL ME THAT IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL AND GAVE ME A QUOTE TO REPLACE IT. I FEEL IT SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE RECALL PROCEDURE. IT SURE SEEMS LIKELY THAT THE RUSTED STRAP CAUSED THE RUST AND EVENTUALLY CAUSED THE LEAK. NOW I HAVE A TRUCK THAT SHOULDN'T BE DRIVEN, WON'T PASS STATE INSPECTION AND FORD SAYS I'M ON THE HOOK FOR A NEW FUEL TANK. WE LIVE IN NORTHEAST NEBRASKA & HAVE A 2001 FORD F-150 TRUCK WHICH HAS ONE FUEL TANK STRAP THAT HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND THE OTHER IS RUSTED. A FEW DAYS PRIOR WE JUST GOT BACK FROM A TRIP TO SEE THE GRANDKIDS IN UPSTATE NEW YORK. WE DROVE AROUND NY WITH THESE CHILDREN IN THE TRUCK. IT GIVES ME SHIVERS TO THINK IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AND A SPARK WE COULD HAVE LOST OUR LIVES AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND I GUESS FORD HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS AND WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. WE HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED AND A NEW FUEL TANK, VENT VALVE, FUEL PUMP MODULE, PRESSURE SENSOR AND NEW FUEL TANK STRAPS. THE RUSTING OUT OF THE FUEL TANK STRAPS IS WHAT CAUSED THE GAS TANK TO DROP. OUR TOTAL FOR THIS REPAIR WAS 1,674.97. I WOULD THINK THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE STRAPS TO A GAS TANK RUSTING OUT. FORD DOES NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS AND I THINK THEY SHOULD.

I PULL OVER TO REALIZE THAT THE ENTIRE GAS TANK HAD COMPLETELY FALLEN OFF OF THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUCK, HAD PUNCTURED, AND WAS SPILLING OVER 20 GALLONS OF FUEL INTO THE ROAD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND SPENT TWO HOURS CONTAINING THE SPILLED FUEL AND ASSISTING THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TO READY THE TRUCK SO THAT IT COULD BE SAFELY TOWED. THE METAL GAS TANK STRAPS HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND BROKE LEAVING THE TANK HANGING ON BY ONLY A COUPLE OF SCREWS. THE TANK HAD TO BE FULLY REMOVED FROM THE TRUCK BEFORE THAT TOW TRUCK DRIVER COULD SAFELY TOW THE TRUCK TO BE REPAIRED. THIS TRUCK IS ONLY A 2001 MODEL AND ONLY HAS 75,000 MILES ON IT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF FUEL THAT SPILLED AND THAT IT OCCURRED ON A BUSY INTERSECTION. THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO SPARK FROM THE TANK WHEN IT HIT THE GROUND! ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2010 THE FUEL TANK ON MY 2001 FORD F-150 TRUCK BROKE FREE OF THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND WAS DRAGGED APPROXIMATELY 200 METERS BEFORE I COULD SAFELY STOP THE VEHICLE. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, I WAS TRAVELING 60 MPH. UPON EXITING THE VEHICLE, I SMELLED STRONG GASOLINE FUMES AND OBSERVED GASOLINE RUNNING FROM UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK. I MOVED AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND A TOW SERVICE. FROM A DISTANCE (APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET) THE GASOLINE TANK WAS CLEARLY RESTING ON THE ROAD SURFACE. ONCE HELP WAS ON THE SCENE, GRANULAR ABSORBENT MATERIAL WAS ADDED TO THE GASOLINE WHICH HAD SPILLED ONTO THE ROAD. THE NOW EMPTY GAS TANK WAS SECURED BY ROPE TO THE TRUCK UNDERCARRIAGE, REVEALING A LARGE HOLE IN THE GAS TANK. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE STRAPS HOLDING THE TANK HAD BROKE. THE TRUCK WAS REMOVED FROM THE SCENE ON A FLAT-BED TRUCK. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE #8 CYLINDER SPARK PLUG HAD EJECTED FROM THE CYLINDER (THE INITIAL POP SOUND) WITH SUCH FORCE THAT IT RUPTURED THE RUBBER FUEL LINE IMMEDIATELY ABOVE IT AND AFT OF THE STAINLESS FUEL INJECTOR BAR. WITH FUEL SPRAYING FROM THE HOSE, IT WAS THEN IGNITED BY THE COIL WHICH WAS STILL ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE AND EMITTING SPARKS. IT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN IN THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD A HISTORY OF PROBLEMS WITH EJECTING SPARK PLUGS DUE TO A LACK OF ADEQUATE THREADS IN THE SPARK PLUG HOLES.
