THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE RADIATOR SUPPORTS WERE RUSTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE LAST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN WAS 2/14/2012. A NEIGHBOR WAS ABLE TO SPRAY WATER ON THE FIRE, AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ABLE TO GET THE FIRE OUT AND PREVENT THE FIRE'S SPREAD TO THE CAB, OR TO MY HOUSE. THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF FIRE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. THERE ARE SEVERAL COMPONENTS OF THE ENGINE MELTED ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE ENGINE, ABOVE THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING AND THE SPARK PLUG BLEWOUT OF THE MOTOR. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM,SO COMMON THAT THEY HAVE A KIT THATS A QWIK FIX. EVIDENTLY A PREVIOUS OWNER HAD THIS PROBLEM AND PUT THE KIT ON THERE GOT RID OF THE CAR AND IT WAS SOLD TO ME BY TOWN TOYOTA IN ROXBURY, NEW JERSEY. IT BLOWS MY MIND THAT I BOUGHT IT WITH 65,000 MILES AND IT ALREDY HAD A MAJOR PROBLEM NOT ONLY ONCE WITH A PREVIOUS OWNER BUT ALSO HAPPENED TO ME. MY 2002 FORD F150 WITH A 5.4 L TRITON V8 ENGINE SPIT OUT A SPARK PLUG FOR NO APPARENT REASON. MY F150 HAS 117,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS HAD NO MECHANICAL PROBLEMS OVER IT'S LIFE. IT IS SERVICED REGULARLY AND IS USED FOR ROUTINE DRIVING. I HAPPENED TO BE 30 MILES FROM HOME WHEN I HEARD A LOUD TAPPING COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. KNOWING A LITTLE ABOUT ENGINES I CHECKED TO SEE WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND NOTICED THAT THE SPARK PLUG HAD BEEN PUSHED OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD, CAUSING THE COMPRESSION TO CAUSE IT AND THE COIL PACK TO CONTINUALLY STRIKE THE FUEL RAIL. FORTUNATELY I KNEW A MECHANIC IN THE AREA 1/4 MILE FROM MY LOCATION AND SLOWLY DROVE TO HIS SHOP. HE SAID THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD 4.6, 5.4 AND 6.8 TRITON ENGINES. HE ADDED THAT THE ALUMINUM USED FOR THE HEADS WAS TOO SOFT CAUSING THE SPARK PLUGS TO SPIT OUT. THERE WAS NO WAY OF PREVENTING THIS FROM HAPPENING OR PREDICTING WHEN IT WOULD HAPPEN. THE HOLE FOR THIS SPARK PLUG HAD ALL THE TREADS BLOWN OUT WHEN THE PLUG CAME OUT SO I HAD TO LEAVE MY TRUCK AT THE GARAGE FOR REPAIR. THE REPAIR CONSISTED OF HAVING TO PUT A STEEL THREADED INSERT INTO THE HEAD IN ORDER TO SECURE THE NEW SPARK PLUG / COIL PACK. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT I SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT DRIVE IT SINCE IT COULD CAUSE A FIRE. I COULD SMELL THE GAS FUMES FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND FULLY BELIEVE THIS TO BE A GOOD POSSIBILITY. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE IF SOMEONE WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ENGINES AND CONTINUED TO DRIVE WITH THIS CONDITION WITH THE POSSIBLE RESULT OF A FIRE IN THE VEHICLE WHILE THEIR FAMILY IS ABOARD. I THINK FORD NEEDS TO DO A RECALL ON THESE ENGINES TO HAVE THEM REPAIRED IN A SAFE FASHION TO PREVENT A TRAGEDY OF A FIRE WHILE IN OPERATION. IN APRIL OF 2010 MY F-150 TRUCK "SPIT" A SPARK PLUG WHILE TRAVELING AT FREEWAY SPEED. THIS WAS A DANGEROUS SITUATION SINCE IT WAS DURING RUSH HOUR AND MANY 18 WHEEL TRUCKS WERE TRAVELING DOWN THE I-5 AT THE TIME AND WERE RELUCTANT TO ALLOW A CAR TO PULL OVER. I HAD THE TRUCK FIXED AT A AAA APPROVED REPAIR STATION WHICH REMOVED THE REMAINING SPARK PLUG, RETAPPED THE BLOCK, INSTALLED AN INSERT AND NEW PLUG. THEY SAID INDUCTION CLEANING WAS ALSO NECESSARY DUE TO THE NON-FIRING CYL, PLUS ALL NEW PLUGS. REPAIR COST $950. LOST USE OF TRUCK FOR TWO DAYS, AND THEN FOUND OUT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITHOUT A RECALL; AND IT COULD HAPPEN AT ANY TIME ON OTHER SPARK PLUGS. SPARK PLUGS ORIGINAL TO VEHICLE AND NORMAL MAINTENANCE WAS CONDUCTED ON THE TRUCK. WAS ADVISED I COULD HAVE DONE NOTHING DIFFERENT TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING.. I FOUND OUT THAT O'REILY'S SELLS A CYLINDER HEAD REPAIR KIT # 42025 SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PROBLEM, IT HAD A INSERT THAT YOU SCREWED INTO THE HEAD AND IT WAS THREADED ON THE INSIDE TO ACCEPT A EXTENDED LENGTH SPARK PLUG THAT WAS INCLUDED IN THE KIT, I TRIED THIS KIT @ $64 DOLLARS PLUS THE NEW COIL @ $43, UPON COMPLETING THE WORK WITH THE KIT AND THE NEW COIL INSTALLED, I STARTED THE TRUCK AND STILL HAD THE SAME WHISTLING PROBLEM AND WAS LOSING COMPRESSION, I CONTACTED A LOCAL MECHANIC, AND FOUND OUT FROM HIM THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND HE SEE THIS SAME PROBLEM ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS OR SO, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO HIM AND HE WORKED ON IT FOR APPROX. 6 HOURS AND HAS THE PROBLEM FIXED, HOWEVER, HE SAID HE COULDN'T PROMISE THAT THIS IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN, TO THE SAME PLUG OR OTHERS. I HAVE A 2002 FORD F150 SUPERCREW HARLEY DAVIDSON EDITION WITH A TRITON 5.4 L ENGINE. I PLACED THE TRUCK IN DRIVE AND HEARD A POP AND THEN A CONTINUED RHYTHMIC POPPING. I OPENED THE HOOD AND COULD TELL AIR WAS COMING FROM THE #4 CYLINDER. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND INVESTIGATED FURTHER. MY 2002 FORD F150 TRUCK, WITH THE 5.4 LITER ENGINE, HAS HAD 2 FAILURES ON 2 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS IN THE SPACE OF 8 MONTHS. THE DEFECTS WERE REPAIRED AT THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THE TRUCK WAS PURCHASED USING A THREADED INSERT INTO THE OLD HEAD AND A NEW COIL. TOTAL COST FOR BOTH REPAIRS WAS APPROXIMATELY $600, AT MY EXPENSE. I HAVE EMAILED FORD MOTOR COMPANY AND THEY RESPONDED SAYING THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE WERE NO RECALLS OR CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAMS IT WOULD NOT BE FIXED BY FORD. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW AND IT HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. I HAVE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF THESE ENGINES WITH THIS PROBLEM. I ALSO INCURRED A $200.00 TOWING BILL, AND HAD TO REPLACED A SPARK PLUG COIL WHICH WAS DAMAGED BY THE SPARK PLUG TO THE TUNE OF $100.00. WHILE DRIVING AT 45 MPH ON LEVEL SURFACE THE #5 SPARK PLUG WAS EJECTED FROM IT'S HOLE DAMAGING THE COIL OVER PLUG CAUSING ARCING FROM THE COIL TO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE PERFORMED AS USUAL FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS, AND THEN THE SAME EXACT SITUATION OCCURRED, INVOLVING THE SAME EXACT SPARK PLUG. THE SECOND OCCURRENCE, THE PLUG AND COIL WERE SO DAMAGED THAT THE HEAD COULD NOT BE RE-THREADED AND REPAIRED. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE, I FOUND THAT DOZENS OF OTHER OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, WHICH IS DUE TO AN ENGINE AND/OR PISTON DEFECT. THE SECOND OCCURRENCE REQUIRED DRILLING OUT THE AFFECTED HEAD, TAPPING IT, AND INSTALLING A HELICOIL BEFORE THE SPARK PLUG COULD BE REPLACED. I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK IN MY 2002 FORD F-150 TRUCK WHEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG UNDER THE HOOD FOLLOWED BY A POPPING SOUND AND A LOSS OF POWER. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AT THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY TO INSPECT UNDER THE HOOD. SEEING NOTHING EVIDENT I TOOK THE CAR HOME AT AN EXTREMELY REDUCED SPEED WHERE I LEFT THE VEHICLE UNTIL I COULD TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT A SPARK PLUG HAD COME LOOSE AND THE HOT GASES LEAKING BY IT RUINED THE COIL AND HEAD AND NEEDED REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD 31,800 MILES ON IT AND WAS 2 WEEKS OUT OF WARRANTY.*AK

VEHICLE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN STALLING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR CHECKUP, BUT THE CAUSE WAS UNDETERMINED.*AK
ELECTRICAL: AT 306 MILES THE SOLENOIDS HAD TO BE REPLACED. UPON SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF; THE DASH BOARD WOULD STILL ILLUMINATE. ALSO, UPON SHUTTING THE VEHICLE OFF IT WOULD CONTINUE TO RUN. THIS HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF FOUR TIMES. THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY FAILED WITH NO WARNING. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, AND WAS TOLD THE WINDSHIELD HAD A LEAK WHICH CORRODED THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS STARTED AT 44000 MILES. THE GASKET HAD TO BE REPLACED, AND THE HARNESS WIRING HAD TO BE REPLACED ALSO. UPON TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE AGAIN THE BATTERY WOULD BE COMPLETELY DEAD. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. *JB

A SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY TRUCK'S ENGINE. THIS WAS AT LOW RPM AND THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 28,000 MILES ON IT. HAVE LEARNED THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES. DEALER FIXED BECAUSE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BUT FREQUENCY INCREASES AS MORE MILES ARE ACCUMULATED. THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR. *JB

SPARK PLUG BLEW OUT OF CYLINDER ON MY TRITON 5.4L FORD F150 LIGHTNING TRUCK. 900 MILES AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED. FORD DEALER QUOTED $3,100 TO REPLACE CYLINDER HEAD WITH A 50% GOODWILL DISCOUNT. IN MY SEARCHES ON THE WEB THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. VERY COMMON ON THEIR V10 DIESEL ENGINES FORD DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT A DEFECT EXISTS.

DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 55 MPH AND HEARD A TERRIBLE SOUND COME FROM THE ENGINE. IT SOUNDED LIKE A PISTON DISCONECTED FROM THE CONNECTING ROD. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS THAT THE #3 SPARKPLUG LOOSEND UP AND DAMAGED THE PLUG HOLE. THE SAID THAT THE HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE BIIL WOULD RANGE FROM $3500-4500. I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO GET THE VEHICLE REPAIRED SO THE VEHICLE SAT AT THE DEALER FOR 5 MONTHS. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALER THEY SAID THERE WAS A REPAIR THAT COULD BE DONE BUT IT WASN'T RECOMENDED BY FORD. THE REPAIR WAS TO REMOVE THE HEAD AND SLEAVE THE BLOWN OUT SPARK PLUG HOLE. I HAD THEM REPAIR IT THIS WAY. THE COST TO ME WAS $1796.00 AND THERE WAS NO WARANTY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT A FORD RECOMENDED REPAIR. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A FAIRLY COMMON PROBLEM AND COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AT GREAT EXPENSE TO THE CONSUMER. NOT ONLY IS THERE GREAT EXPENSE BUT, IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC IT COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT.*AK
