Front seatbelts on 2002 Ford F-150 become unlatched unexpectedly while driving. This has been noticed over the last two or three years occasionally, but has been getting worse. Seat belt has become unlatched about 5-6 times during a 600 mile road trip. Seat belt was confirmed by two passengers that it was indeed latched correctly and nothing pushing the release button. Seatbelt was confirmed to be latched by firmly tugging on seat belt to witness that it was latched. Both passengers confirmed that the seatbelt become unlatched randomly while driving. Passenger and driver safety is at risk. If driver seatbelt comes unlatched while driving or during accident, the driver could loose control of truck and put other drivers at risk. The unlatching does not show any warning signs as to when it will become unlatched. Seatbelt just becomes unlatched and starts to recoil without warning. Ford service just says that the truck is out of warranty and that they dont cover seat belt replacements as there is no open recalls for such. Seatbelt is still currently installed on vehicle but can be available for inspection on vehicle or removed for inspection.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURING INTO THE BUCKLE TO CLICK, LOCK, AND SECURE THE DRIVER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MULLINAX FORD OF MOBILE (7311 AIRPORT BLVD, MOBILE, AL 36608, 1-(888) 241-4640) AND AUTONATION FORD MOBILE (901 EAST INTERSTATE 65 SERVICE RD S, MOBILE, AL 36606, (251) 202-2016). BOTH DEALERS INDICATED THAT A SEAT BELT KIT NEEDED TO BE PURCHASED AS A UNIT, WHICH INCLUDED ALL OF THE SEAT BELTS IN THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE TO DETERMINE IF THEY COULD APPROVE JUST THE DRIVER'S SEAT BELT BEING REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT ISSUED ANY SEAT BELT RECALLS FOR THE YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THEY ISSUED TWO TSBS FOR THE SEAT BELTS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,000. *TT *JB

THE DEALER (SIMI VALLEY FORD, 2440 1ST ST, SIMI VALLEY, CA 93065) STATED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ATTACHED TO THE VIN AND, WITH THE VEHICLE BEING A DIFFERENT YEAR THAN WHAT WAS IN THE RECALL, THE FAILURE WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID OUT OF POCKET AT A COST OF $700. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE THROUGH EMAIL. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 180,000.

I ALWAYS LATCH MY SEAT BELT. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE 1983. I NEVER DRIVE WITHOUT MY SEAT BELT LATCHED. FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS MY DRIVERS SIDE SEAT BELT HAS BEEN MYSTERIOUSLY BECOMING UNLATCHED WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I THOUGHT I JUST WASN'T PUSHING IT IN FAR ENOUGH SOMETHING I HAVE NEVER BEFORE HAD AN ISSUE WITH IN ANY OTHER VEHICLE. AFTER A FEW MILES OF DRIVING THE SEAT BELT BECOMES UNLATCHED. IT IS VERY NOTICEABLE BECAUSE IT MAKES AN AUDIBLE CLICK AND RECEDES BACK SLIGHTLY RELIEVING ANY TENSION APPLIED TO MY TORSO. FOR A LONG TIME I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY AND I HAD JUST BEEN IN A HURRY OR SOMETHING. AFTER THE UNCLASPING I REINSERT IT INTO THE RECEIVER THEN I JOSTLE IT AND SEE IF IT UNCLASPING AGAIN. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO CAUSE IT TO BECOME UNCLASPED BY JOSTLING IT AND UP TILL TODAY IT WOULD NEVER BECOME UNCLASPED AFTER RESETTING IT. IT HAPPENS AT ALL SPEEDS. THE FREQUENCY HAS INCREASED TO AN ESTIMATED 1/3 OF THE TRIPS THAT THIS HAPPENS. WELL TODAY I EXPERIENCED IT AGAIN AND REINSERTED THE SEAT BELT AND JOSTLED IT AND CONTINUED DRIVING. THIS TIME I DIDN'T GET A MILE BEFORE IT BECAME UNCLASPED AGAIN. AHA! I AM NOT CRAZY. OKAY THAT SOUNDS A LITTLE LIKE I AM BUT I ASSURE YOU I AM NOT. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND IT HAS TAKEN ME SEVERAL YEARS TO FINELY PROVE TO MYSELF THAT THE SEAT BELT IS DEFECTIVE. SO BECAUSE THE DRIVER CAN NOT REPRODUCE THE UNCLASPING BY MANUALLY JOSTLING THE SEAT BELT WE TELL OURSELVES THAT IT MAY NOT BE THE SEAT BELT. THIS CAUSES THE DRIVER TO NOT TAKE THE REQUIRED ACTION OF HAVING THE SEAT BELT FIXED. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING WITH MY LIFE AT RISK FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. I HAVE JUST PURCHASED THIS USED VEHICLE, AND UPON INITIAL INSPECTION IT WAS IDENTIFIED THAT THERE ARE 2 SEATBELTS IN THE VEHICLE THAT ARE FAULTY AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN MY INSPECTION, I OBSERVED THAT THE SEATBELT BUCKLE'S BUTTON WOULD NOT IMMEDIATELY RELEASE AFTER BEING PRESSED. IT APPEARS THAT THE SPRING IS TOO WEAK TO FORCE THE BUTTON UP TO ENGAGE THE CLASP IN THE BUCKLE. IN SEARCHING FOR A REPLACEMENT SEATBELT, IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM BEING TALKED ABOUT IN DISCUSSION BOARDS ONLINE. IT APPEARS THAT THIS ITEM IS OUT OF WARRANTY. SEAT BELT BUCKLE - RECEIVER END INTERMITTENTLY RELEASES WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, WHEN COMING TO A SHORT STOP, OR MAKING A HARD RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. NOTHING IS PRESSING ON THE RED RELEASE BUTTON AND AREA IS KEPT CLEAR FOR THAT REASON. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY YESTERDAY AND WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED HAD TO STOP RAPIDLY. THE SEAT BELT BUCKLE RELEASED ON IT'S OWN AND I NEARLY SLAMMED INTO THE STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE SPOKEN TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY WHO STATES THAT THE SEAT BELT BUCKLES HAVE A 50,000 MILE/5 YEAR WARRANTY AND, UNLESS THERE IS A RECALL, THEY WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIR. I HAVE READ ON FORD TRUCK FORUMS MANY REPORTS OF THIS OCCURRING TO OTHER OWNERS OF THIS YEAR AND MODEL, AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2001 SEAT BELT BUCKLES BUT NOT ON THE 2002. WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR THE DOT TO ISSUES A RECALL - EVEN 1 DEATH WOULD BE TOO MANY! MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST BETWEEN $150-$200 WITH LABOR TO REPLACE THE PART, BUT IF THE PART IS DEFECTIVE, I DON'T WANT THE SAME THING PUT IN THE VEHICLE! THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT FORD SHOULD HAVE VOLUNTARILY REPAIRED WHEN FIRST DETECTED BY OWNER, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. FORD STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OVER 50,000 MILES AND NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY, THEREFORE THEY COULD NOT BE OF ASSISTANCE. THE VIN, ENGINE SIZE, PURCHASE DATE, AND SPEED WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

SEVERAL TIMES PER DAY, MY DRIVER SIDE SEATBELT POPS OPEN WHILE DRIVING. MY CONCERNS HAVE FALLEN ON DEAF EARS AT THE DEALERSHIPS. NUMEROUS FRIENDS, FAMILY MEMBERS, AND WORK ASSOCIATES HAVE WITNESSED THIS HAPPENING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A LOT OF OTHER FORD OWNERS THAT THEIR DRIVER SIDE SEATBELTS IN THEIR TRUCKS AND SUVS DO THE SAME THING. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM THAT HAS OCCURRED SINCE I PURCHASED MY 2002 FORD F-150 SPORT NEW. MY DRIVER SIDE SEATBELT UNBUCKLES ON ITS OWN AS I DRIVE. I HAVE WORN SEATBELTS SINCE THE LATE 1960'S AND DO NOT EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM IN THE OTHER 4 VEHICLES I DRIVE. IT IS TERRIFYING TO THINK THAT THE SEATBELT MAY NOT WORK IN A TIME OF EMERGENCY WHEN IT IS NEEDED. UNFORTUNATELY, I NEVER SEEM TO THINK OF THIS PROBLEM WHEN I TAKE THE TRUCK IN FOR FORD DEALER SERVICE. I WILL MAKE A POINT TO DO SO NEXT TIME I AM IN FOR SERVICE. THIS EVENT HAS OCCURRED TWICE IN THE PAST WEEK. FOR NOW, I TUG ON THE SEATBELT WHEN I BUCKLE UP TO SEE IF THE BELT IS LOCKED OR I THINK IT IS LOCKED.

THE REAR PASSENGER SAFETY BELT BUCKLE HAS BROKEN THROUGH NORMAL USE. THE DEALERSHIP STATES IT IS NOT COVERED BY MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS A RULING PERTAINING TO SAFETY BELTS THAT STATES ANY VEHICLE LESS THAN 7 YEARS OLD, THOSE SAFETY BELTS WOULD BE COVERED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *NM

VEHICLE HAS A GAP ON DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR OVER THE TOP. THE GAP CAUSES NOISE INSIDE THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. IT MAKES IT HARD TO KEEP THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD. MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WITH NO RESULTS.*AK THE DEALER INSTALLED A RUBBER SEALER AROUND THE GAP BUT THIS SEEMED TO CAUSE MORE NOISE. THE RADIO, CD PLAYER AND TV IN THE REAR OF THE VAN STOPPED WORKING. THE ROTORS WARPED AND CAUSED VIBRATIONS WHEN BRAKING. WATER HAD GOTTEN INTO THE LEFT SIDE PARK LAMP. THE SEAT BELT WARNING CHIME AND LIGHT FAILED INTERMITTENTLY, THE DEALER REPLACED THE MODULE. *NM

BOTH LOCKING PAWLS ON MANUAL SEAT ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM DO NOT LOCK INTO PLACE WHEN SEAT ADJUSTMENT LEVER IS RELEASED. ONE OR THE OTHER PAWL LOCKS INTO PLACE AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF SHIFTING FORCE IS THEN REQUIRED TO MOVE THE SECOND PAWL INTO A POSITION WHERE IT WILL ENGAGE. THIS WOULD ONLY BE A MINOR INCONVENIENCE IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE SEAT BELT CONFIGURATION OF THIS VEHICLE. THIS SEAT BELT ATTACHES NOT TO THE SUB FLOOR OR PILLAR BUT TO THE SEAT ITSELF. IF (AS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES TO ME) YOU ARE UNDER WAY AND REPOSITION THE SEAT, YOU MAY NOT REALIZE THE SEAT IS NOT SAFELY LOCKED INTO POSITION. IF YOU WERE THEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT THE STRAIN ON THE ENGAGED PAWL MIGHT BE BEYOND DESIGN PARAMETERS. WHEN THE UNENGAGED PAWL, TRAVELING TO ITS NEXT LOCKED POSITION UNDER THE FORCES OF THE ACCIDENT, MEET THE MASS OF THE OCCUPANT AND SEAT, THE SHEAR FORCES MAY CAUSE FAILURE OF THE PAWL ALLOWING THE OCCUPANT AND HIS /HER SEAT TO BE UNCONTROLLED DURING AN ACCIDENT. THIS COULD RESULT IN UNNECESSARY INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT. AN AIR BAG SRS COULD EXACERBATE THIS CIRCUMSTANCE CAUSING ESCALATING INJURY(S).
