The contact owns a 2002 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH and attempting to pass a slower vehicle, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the pedal suddenly extended to the floorboard causing the vehicle to immediately accelerate faster than intended. During the failure the speed increased to over 75 MPH before the contact shifted the transmission into neutral and the vehicle decelerated. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure on two other occasions and the cruise control feature was never activated during the failure. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 94,000.

I WAS DRIVING AND THE SPEED WOULD GO UP TO 90 MPH, THE TRUCK WAS NOT GOING THE SPEED IN REALITY. THEN THE RPM'S WOULD GO UP REALLY HIGH, I STOPPED THE TRUCK PUT IT IN PARK AND BACK IN DRIVE TRIED TO DRIVE OFF. THE TRUCK THEN WOULD NOT GO OVER 30 MPH AND THE GAS PEDDLE WAS ALL THE WAY DOWN TRYING TO GO, THE ENGINE STARTED SMOKING AND WHEN I PULLED OVER OPENED THE HOOD IT WAS SMOKING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE UPPER CORNER OF THE TRUCK. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC LOOK AT IT, HE SAID THE BREAK PRESSURE SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE IT'S A HOT WIRE AND IT'S LEAKING. AFTER CHECKING THE FORD VIN CHECK IT DIDN'T SAY MY TRUCK WAS APART OF THE RECALL BUT THEY YEAR AND MAKE AND MODEL IS. THIS IS FOLLOW UP ASSESSMENT TO MY 9/22/2019 CLAIM [XXX]- WHERE I FOUND MYSELF IN A VERY DANGEROUS VEHICLE RUN AWAY SITUATION THAT RESULTED IN A REAR END ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY MECHANIC'S FIRST OBSERVATION WHEN TURN IGNITION KEY, THE ENGINE RACED AT FULL THROTTLE OUT OF CONTROL. AFTER QUICKLY SHUTTING DOWN ENGINE THE SYMPTOMS LEAD MY MECHANIC TO TEST THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. HAVING NEVER SEEN THIS DANGEROUS SYMPTOM FROM A BAD IACV, HE CONTINUED TO DO FURTHER TEST ON THE IACV ONLY TO DETERMINE THE PART WAS INDEED DEFECTIVE. CAR WAS ON THE HIGHWAY DOING 65 MPH. WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES I WAS ABLE TO SLOW IT DOWN AND CONTROL THE CAR. GOT HOME FROM WORK PARKED MY VEHICLE IN MY CARPORT AVAILABLE SPACE IN MY APARTMENT. TURN OFF THE TRUCK COMPLETELY, NOTHING LEFT ON OR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS TO CAUSE A INCIDENT. WHEN TO MY APARTMENT UNIT TOOK A SHOWER AND NOT MORE THAN 20-30MINS WAS ALARMED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS CAUGHT ON FIRE. I IMMEDIATELY RAN OUTSIDE TO THE CARPORT SAW THE ENGINE ON FIRE, TRIED TO STOP IT WITH ANYTHING THAT I COULD FIND (WATER HOLES) OR EXTINGUISHER. MY NEIGHBORS CALLED 911 AS I SAW THE FLAMES GETTING HIGHER AND STRONGER THE FIRE MOVED INTO MY DAUGHTERS VEHICLE WHICH WAS PARKED NEXT TO OUR OTHER CARPORT SPACE AND CAUGHT ON FIRE AS WELL. OVERALL, THERE ARE TWO VEHICLES COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THERE WAS ALSO TWO OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED THAT HAVE SOME BURNING DAMAGES. AS WELL AS PROPERTY DAMAGES INTO OUR AVAILABLE PARKING SPACES. THE CRUISE CONTROL FINALLY WENT OFF. SEVERAL MILES DOWN THE ROAD I TRIED TO USE THE CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN WITH THE SAME RESULTS. MY TRUCK IS A 4.2L V6 AND HAS HAD THE RECALL TAKEN CARE OF SEVERAL YEARS AGO. THIS APPEARS TO HAVE HAPPENED TO SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE AND COULD HAVE HAD A DISASTROUS OUTCOME. *TR
ON MARCH 22, 2014, THE TRUCK WAS PARKED IN A LOCAL PARKING LOT, THE IGNITION KEY WAS REMOVED AND THE TRUCK WAS LOCKED. THE DRIVER RETURNED TO THE TRUCK TO FIND THAT WHILE IT WAS PARKED, A FIRE HAD BEGUN IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF THE TRUCK, AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE DEPARTMENT WERE ON THE SCENE PUTTING OUT THE FIRE. BECAUSE OF THE QUICK ACTIONS OF AN INDIVIDUAL PARKED NEARBY WHO USED A FIRE HOSE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE UNTIL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED, THE CABIN AND THE BODY OF THE TRUCK WERE SPARED, AND THE DAMAGE WAS LOCALIZED TO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH.

I AM REPORTING THIS INCIDENT AS THE PERSON WHO'S CAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE FIRE. I PARKED MY CAR NEXT TO A 2002 FORD F150, AND AFTER BEING HOME FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF, A POLICE OFFICER CAME TO MY DOOR AND TOLD ME THAT MY CAR (VW JETTA) WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR FIRE. APPARENTLY THE F150 CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED MY CAR, A BUSH, AND ANOTHER CAR. THE FIRE MARSHAL ON SCENE EXPLAINED TO ME THAT FORD HAD A RECALL ON MULTIPLE VEHICLES THAT HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE F150 IN QUESTION IS TOTALED AND HAS TO BE TOWED OFF THE PROPERTY. ON FEBRUARY 26, 2010 MY GIRLFRIEND AND I ALONG WITH OUR KIDS WERE DRIVING TO SAN DIEGO, CA. AS WE WERE SPEEDING UP TO PASS A SLOW SEMI-TRUCK MY TRUCK GOT STUCK ON THROTTLE, I STARTED TO PANIC ASKING MY GIRLFRIEND TO CHECK AND SEE IF THERE WAS A WATER BOTTLE STUCK UNDERNEATH THE BREAK PEDAL, SHE CHECKED, ALSO PANICKING BECAUSE WE HAD OUR CHILDREN ASLEEP IN THE TRUCK. I TRIED TO PUSH ON THE BRAKE BUT IT WAS REALLY TOUGH TO PUSH DOWN ON AND THE TRUCK WOULDN'T SLOW DOWN, WE STARTED TO PANIC EVEN MORE. I STARTED DRIVING OFF TO THE SHOULDER OF THE RODE AS I POPPED THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AND TURNED OFF THE TRUCK. I PUT THE TRUCK IN PARK AND TURNED IT BACK ON AFTER A FEW MINUTES AND THE RPM'S WHERE REVVING AT 6,000 AND THE BREAK PEDAL WAS STILL VERY HARD TO PUSH ON. I TURNED THE TRUCK OFF AGAIN. ON NOVEMBER 16, 2008 I WAS DRIVING 65 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED. TRAFFIC SLOWED IN FRONT OF ME SO I TRIED TO DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL. IT DID NOT DEACTIVATE WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE, SO I PUSHED THE OFF SWITCH. THE LIGHT INDICATING IT WAS ON WENT OUT, BUT THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT DEACTIVATE. I HAD TO LITERALLY STAND ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SLOW DOWN, (NARROWLY AVERTING A CRASH) AND STAYED ON IT UNTIL I WAS DOWN TO ABOUT 35 MPH. COMING TO A TURN-OFF, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF AT 35-MPH, AND TURN THE KEY OFF. UPON RESTARTING THE ENGINE, IT STILL RACED TO A HIGH RPM. I HAD TO PULL THE FUSE IN ORDER TO DRIVE HOME. I HAVE A 2002 FORD F-150 SUPERCREW PICKUP. THERE HAVE BEEN RECORDED INCEDENTS OF FAILURE OF THE SPEED CONTROL SWITCHES CAUSING FIRE OF THE VEHICLE AND ADJOINING PROPERTY. ON INCIDENT THAT OCCURED IN CORPU CHRISTI, TX IS WELL DOCUMENTED AND THAT FIRE WAS IN 2003 INVOLVING A 2002 SUPERCREW. I CALLED THE FORD DEALER ABOUT HAVING THE SWITCH REPLACED AND TO MY SHOCK/SURPRISE, 2002 SUPERCREWS ARE NOT ON THE RECALL LIST. THE SWITCH IS $15.00 AND I COULD BUY ONE, BUT I'M ON TOTAL DISABILITY AND CANT REPLACE IT MYSELF. I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO PUT THE HEAT UNDER FORD TO INCLUDE 2002 SUPERCREWS ON THE RECALL LIST. I DID DISABLE THE SWITCH, BUT IT MAKES IT WORTHLESS USING THE SPEED CONTROL. THANKS!
