APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR AFTER BEING PARKED IN PARKING STALL AT MY RESIDENCE, NEIGHBORS NOTICED FIRE COMING FROM THE HOOD AND UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE (THE FIRE ORIGINATED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE).THEY ATTEMPTED TO PUT OUT THE FIRE AND CALLED 911. SAN JOSE FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED TO THE CALL AND FINISHED PUTTING OUT THE FIRE. THE VEHICLE HAD VISIBLE BURNT WIRING, RIGHT SIDE FENDER DAMAGE FROM HEAT (INSIDE AND OUTSIDE) AND THE RIGHT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE SUSTAINED DAMAGE DUE TO MELTING DEBRIS FALLING ON TIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TOOK A REPORT OF THE INCIDENT. AS I HAVE RELAYED THIS EVENT TO OTHERS, THEY HAVE MENTIONED THAT THIS IS PROBABLY A "RECALL FIRE" AND THAT I SHOULD REPORT THIS INCIDENT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F-250 SD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE HEARD A CLICKING NOISE AND THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FLICKERED ON AND OFF. ONCE HE TURNED THE HEATER CONTROL OFF, THE FLICKERING STOPPED BUT RECURRED WITHIN A FEW MINUTES. THE CONTACT PARKED THE VEHICLE AND WHEN HE RETURNED, THE VEHICLE WAS ATTEMPTING TO START INDEPENDENTLY. HE REMOVED THE POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES FROM THE SOLENOID TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. HE THEN REATTACHED AND THE FAILURE RECURRED. IN ADDITION, SMOKE WAS EMITTING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 218,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 217,000.

I HAD A SPARK PLUG BLOW OUT OF THE CYLINDER HEAD, AS MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, AND THEY KNOW IT, SINCE THEY CHANGED THE DESIGN. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS, SINCE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND IF I CANNOT FIX IT, IT WILL COST ME $2400 FOR A NEW CYLINDER HEAD. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F250 HD. EVERY OTHER DAY, THE BRAKE LIGHTS AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS STOP WORKING. THE CONTACT MUST CONSTANTLY REPLACE THE FUSES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC AND HE DIAGNOSED FAILURE IN THE WIRING. HE STATED THAT THE FIVE ROUND WIRING HARNESSES IN WHICH TO TOW A CAMPER WAS PUT IN POOLY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,513 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,650.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2000 F-250 FORD PICK UP TRUCK EQUIPED WITH THE 7.3 LITER DIESEL ENGINE, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY STOPPED RUNNING, WITHOUT ANY WARNING SIGNS. THIS OCCURED WHILE I WAS ENTERING A CIRCLE INTERSECTION, FORTUNATELY VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING BEFORE ANY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. WHEN THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN I LOST BOTH THE POWER STEERING AND THE POWER BRAKING SYSTEMS. I WAS STARTING MY TURN TO ENTER THE CIRCLE AND AT FIRST THOUGHT THAT I HAD A FRONT FLAT TIRE AS THE VEHICLE BARELY RESPONDED TO MY EFFORTS TO GRADUALLY TURN TO THE RIGHT. THEN, WHEN I TRIED TO STOP IT TOOK AT LEAST TWO TO THREE TIMES THE DISTANCE TO COME TO A STOP, AS IT USUALLY DOES, EVEN WITH GREATLY INCREASED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF THER HAD BEEN A VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME OR ANOTHER SORT OF OBSTRUCTION I COULD HAVE EASILY HIT IT. I WAS ABLE TO RETURN HOME, A DISTANCE OF APPROX 2/3 MILES , DURING WHICH THE VEHICLE STALLED OUT 4 MORE TIMES, WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS OF VERY POOR STEERING AND BRAKING . THE REPAIR SHOP REPLACED AN ELECTRICAL COMPONET REFERED TO AS A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AT A COST OF APPROX $377.00 . I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND ENGINE COMBINATION USUALLY HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM OF FAILURE OF THIS SENSOR WITHOUT ANY WARNING, E.G. THER WERE NO DASH WARNING LIGHTS OR ANY WARNING OF ANY SORT AND THE ENGINES CAN STALL OUT EITHER RUNNING AT 65 MPH OR AT IDLE OR ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN. I WAS FORTUNATE, IN THAT I WAS GOING SLOW AND THAT THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC. *NM

MY CPS FAILED WHILE DRIVING AND THE ENGINE STALLED LEAVING ME WITH LIMITED STEERING AND BRAKING. THE TRUCK IS A FORD F-250 WITH THE 7.3 POWERSTROKE DIESEL. THE PART WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY BUT I HAD TO PAY A $100 DEDUCTIBLE. *NM

CAME OUT FROM WORK TO GO HOME, TRUCK WOULD NOT START, JUST FILLED THE PARKING LOT WITH WHITE SMOKE. CPS SENSOR HAD FAILED WITH NO WARNING. GOT A RIDE HOME AND NEXT DAY PURCHASED A REPLACEMENT SENSOR. INSTALLED IT THAT DAY AND THIS ONE LASTED ABOUT 9 MONTHS AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AGAIN WHEN IT FAILED. IF THIS SENSOR WERE TO FAIL WHILE DRIVING, LOST OF STEERING AND BRAKING WOULD OCCUR. *JB

MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE CPS (CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR) ON THE FORD 7.3L POWER STROKE ENGINES. IT SEEMS THAT MOST/ALL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THIS SENSOR HAVE EXPERIENCED FAILURE, WHICH RESULTS IN THE VEHICLE STALLING. I BELONG TO SEVERAL FORUMS AND NEARLY EVERYONE HAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THAT SENSOR AND IT IS "RULE OF THUMB" TO CARRY ONE IN YOUR GLOVE BOX FOR WHEN IT GOES BAD. THIS HAS BECOME SUCH A PROBLEM THAT YOU CAN NOW BUY THE SENSORS ON EBAY, PEOPLE HAVE BOUGHT THESE BY THE TRUCKLOAD TO SELL SINCE THEY KNOW OF THE PROBLEM. WHY SHOULD WE CONSUMERS HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SUCH AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF THE ENGINE FAILING? WE SPEND 20-30-40K DOLLARS ON THESE VEHICLES AND CAN BE LEFT STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD DUE TO THIS ONE PART FAILING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. PLEASE, SOMEONE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!*JB

CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. AT FIRST, VEHICLE LOST CRUISE CONTROL. THEN IT LOST THE BRAKE LIGHTS. WHEN TAKEN TO BE SERVICED, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A BLOWN OUT WIRING HARNESS CONNECTED TO THE CRUISE CONTROL.*AK

ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK I HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE EMINATING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF MY 2000 FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY, 6.8 (V-10) TRUCK. I THOUGHT IT WAS AN XHAUST MANIFOLD LEAK. I PULLED ONTO A GRAVEL ROAD, LIFTED THE HOOD AND CLIMBED UP TO LOOK TO SEE WHAT I COULD FIND. IMAGINE MY SUPRISE TO SEE A LEFT BANK SPARK PLUG, #8 CYLINDER, LYING AGAINST THE FUEL RAIL AND THE COIL FIRING AGAINST THE HEAD. I LIMPED HOME, WONDERING ALL THE WHILE HOW MUCH FUEL WAS POURING INTO THE OIL PAN! I USED A STRONG FLASH LIGHT TO PEER INTO THE SPARK PLUG HOLE AND FOUND TO MY SUPRISE, VERY LITTLE IF ANY THREADS TO CONTIAN THE SPARK PLUG. I THEN USED A 90 DEG. PICK TO "FEEL" THE THREADS. NONE. I CALLED JOE MACHENS FORD IN COLUMBIA, MO. TO SEE IF THIS MIGHT BE A COMMON PROBLEM. THEY INFORMED ME THEY SEE QUITE A FEW OF THE 5.4 LITER CYLINDER HEADS IN FOR REPAIR AND HAD HAD ONE 6.8. THEY INFORMED ME THAT FORD HAD ISSUED A TSB FOR THE LIGHTNING WITH THE 5.4 ( I CAN SEE WHY, A COMPRESSOR ON TOP OF THE ENGINE CAN CREATE PROBLEMS) OTHER THAN THE AFORMENTIONED TSB, NO OTHERS EXIST AND FORD HAS YET TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. I CHECKED FOR INFO VIA THE GOOGLE SEARCH ENGINE AND WASN'T ABLE TO FIND MUCH INFORMATION. I PROBABLY USED THE INCORRECT TERMINOLOGY. WHO KNOWS HOW MUCH OF THE ALUMNIUM THREADS WERE INGESTED INTO THE CYLINDER, WHICH IN TURN WILL CAUSE SCARRING AND OIL CONTROL PROBLEMS. I DO KNOW HOWEVER, DUE TO WHAT I WAS TOLD BY THE PERSON AT JOE MACHENS FORD IN COLUMBIA, MO., IT SEEMS AS THOUGH FORD HAS NOT PRACTICED DUE DILIGENCE AS TO FINDING A SUITABLE COST EFECTIVE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT FOR THIS PROBLEM.*AK

APRIL 2004. FAULTY CABLE IN STEEING COLUMN. THIS CABLE CAUSES A FAILURE WHICH DISABLES THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG IT ALSO DISABLES THE HORN AND CRUISE CONTROL. AFTER GOING TO SEVERAL DISCUSSION FORUMS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AFFECTING 100'S PERHAPS 100 OF FORD SUPER DUTY F250, F350 VEHICLE. PER THE CHAT PAGES FORD WAS ABLE TO GET AROUND THIS ISSUE BY STATING THE FAULTY CABLING EFFECTS THE CRUISE CONTROL ONLY. THIS IS A MISCONSEPTION. ALSO BASED ON THESE CHAT PAGES THIS PROBLEM EFFECTS MOST F250,350 FROM 1999 - 2003. THE AVERAGE FAILURE TIMELINE IS 45000 - 70000 MILIES. MINE OCCURED AT 68000. *AK
