THE REAR BRAKE LINE FAILED DUE TO CORROSION. THE FAILED BRAKE LINE ALLOWED THE BRAKE FLUID TO TOTALLY DRAIN THE RESERVOIR ON THE MASTER CYLINDER. THE RESERVOIR FOR THE REAR BRAKES IS SHARED WITH THE FRONT BRAKES SO THAT THE FRONT BRAKES WERE NO LONGER ABLE TO FUNCTION AS WELL. THE OPERATOR THEN HAS NO BRAKES AT ALL ON THE VEHICLE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE PARKING BRAKE. IN THE CASE OF THE FIRST FAILURE, I WAS ABLE TO USE THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND THEN SHIFT INTO REVERSE (IT HAS SYNCHROS IN REVERSE AS WELL) TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IN THE CASE OF THE SECOND FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ONLY PUSHED ONCE, THE RESERVOIR STILL COMPLETELY DRAINED LEAVING ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKES. I FEEL THAT THIS BRAKE FAILURE MODE DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE INTENT OF WHAT I UNDERSTAND THE LAW TO BE, THAT REQUIRES A SPLIT BRAKE SYSTEM THAT ENABLES THE OPERATOR TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN EITHER FRONT OR REAR BRAKES FAIL. THE CURRENT BRAKE SYSTEM DOES HAVE A SPLIT MASTER CYLINDER BUT THE COMMON RESERVOIR FEATURE PREVENTS THE SPLIT MASTER CYLINDER FROM OPERATING AS INTENDED/REQUIRED.

WAS PULLING MY BOAT OUT OF THE WATER AND WHEN STOPPING HEARD A LOUD BANG. STOPPED TRUCK AND SAW FLUID LEAKING ON TO THE GROUND FROM JUST FORWARD OF THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE. FOUND FLUID TO BE BRAKE FLUID. BRAKE STEEL LINE THAT RUNS DOWN THE LEFT FRAME RAIL HAD BURST NEAR FUEL TANK. THIS AREA HARD TO SEE UNLESS USING A MIRROR AND LIGHT. THE BRAKE LINE WAS VERY CORRODED AND HAD RUSTED THRU IN THE AREA THAT IS HARDEST TO SEE. REPLACED THE STEEL BRAKE LINE TO REPAIR. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS TRUCK. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F-250 SD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE BRAKES UNINTENTIONALLY LOCKED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND REMAINED PARKED OVERNIGHT. THE FOLLOWING DAY, THE CONTACT STARTED THE VEHICLE AND RESUMED DRIVING WITH THE BRAKES FUNCTIONING NORMALLY FOR 15 MILES BEFORE THE FAILURE RECURRED. ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, ALL OF THE ROTORS AND BOTH REAR CALIPERS WERE REPLACED. IN ADDITION TO THE REPAIR, THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED FOR THE MOST RECENT FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS RELATED TO THE BRAKES. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 178,000.

I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED WITH 138,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE PUT ABOUT 122,000 MILES ON IT SO IT HAS ABOUT 250,000 MILES ON IT NOW. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS FRONT BRAKE ISSUES WITH THIS TRUCK. I HAVE HAD 8 BRAKE REPAIRS ON THE TRUCK SINCE I BOUGHT IT. THE TRUCK VIOLENTLY SHAKES WHILE BRAKING. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO MULTIPLE BRAKE SHOPS AND HAD FORD ORIGINAL PARTS PUT BACK ON IT. EVERYTIME THEY CHANGE THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS AND EVERY OTHER TIME THE CALIPERS. IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE I HAVE AN ACCIDENT. I RECENTLY HAD A REPAIR DONE AND I HAVE ONLY WENT 2,100 MILES AND IT IS VIOLENTLY SHAKING AGAIN. I USUALLY GET AROUND 18,000 MILES BETWEEN BRAKE REPAIRS. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND HAVE FOUND HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE WITH THIS TRUCK. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD F-250 SD. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED BURNING WIRES IN THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. HE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND OPENED THE HOOD. THE SMOKE CEASED, BUT THERE WAS A MELTED BLACK WIRE UNDER THE MASTER CYLINDER, WHICH HE BELIEVES CAUSED THE SMOKE. THE CONTACT DROVE BACK HOME, LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD AGAIN, AND NOTICED THAT IT WAS THE BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH. THROUGH RESEARCH, HE FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL, BUT IT DID NOT INCLUDE DIESEL ENGINES. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO ASSIST. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 160,000.

THE FAILURE OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR PARKED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR THE FAILURE FOR FREE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. BRAKE LINE FAILURE,WHILE BACKING DOWN DRIVEWAY, BRAKES WERE PUT ON THE STOP, PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, USED EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP, PULLED FORWARD BACK UP THE DRIVEWAY AND NOTICED A LOT OF BRAKE FLUID ON THE DRIVEWAY, UPON INVESTIGATION, NOTICED MAIN BRAKE LINE HAD RUPTURED NEAR THE FUEL TANK DUE TO RUST AND CORROSION,WENT TO NAPA TO GET NEW BRAKE LINE AND REPLACED OURSELVES BECAUSE IT WAS ON SUNDAY AND NO DEALERS WERE OPEN, TALKED TO FORD MECHANIC AT LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS WELL KNOW WITH THIS TRUCK,"POOR DESIGN HE SAYS" *JB

I HAVE A MODEL YEAR 2000 FORD F-250 PICKUP TRUCK WITH APPROXIMATELY 45K MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THIS TRUCK IS DRIVEN PRIMARILY IN THE SUMMER, AND HAS NEVER BEEN USED FOR SNOW PLOWING. YESTERDAY, AS I WAS DRIVING WITH MY YOUNG SON IN THE TRUCK, I EXPERIENCED A FAILURE OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM WHEN I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN DESCENDING A STEEP GRADE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AND EVENTUALLY BRING IT TO A COMPLETE STOP SAFELY. HAD THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN APPROACHING STOPPED TRAFFIC OR EVEN PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC, THE OUTCOME COULD HAVE BEEN FAR WORSE. I KNOW TWO OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES WITH FORD TRUCKS, ONE OF WHOM WAS IN A CRASH DUE TO IT. SINCE I HAVEN'T HEARD OF INCIDENTS LIKE THIS WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE, I SUSPECT THIS IS A PATTERN UNIQUE TO FORD, AND WANTED TO MAKE SURE IT WAS REPORTED. IT APPEARS TO BE A BRAKE LINE FAILURE, PRESUMABLY DUE TO CORROSION, BUT I HAVE NOT YET HAD IT SERVICED. *TR

TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FIRST TIME HE NOTICED A PROBLEM WITH HIS 2000 F250 TRUCK, WAS WHEN HE HIT HIS BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TURNED OFF VEHICLE AND CALL THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP ASK THAT HE BRING VEHICLE IN. ONCE THE DEALERSHIP LOOKED AT VEHICLE THEY SAID THAT HIS BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED OUT. THE CONTACT SAID THAT HE ASKED MECHANIC WHY THIS HAPPENED AND HE WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE VEHICLE SITTING FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. CONTACT STATED THAT HE ONLY DRIVES THIS VEHICLE ONCE A WEEK BECAUSE IT USES DIESEL FUEL. AND DURING THE SUMMER HE DRIVES VEHICLE MORE. CONTACT STATED THAT HE DOES USE THE TRUCK TO TOW HIS 5TH WHEEL CAMPER DURING THE SUMMER. THE REPAIR WAS DONE AND CONTACT DOES HAVE REPAIR ORDER.

DT: THE CONTACT COMPLAINED ABOUT A DEFECT IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. WHEN DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE FLOOR WITHOUT STOPPING THE VEHICLE. HE HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO STOP THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, POWER STEERING WORKED INTERMITTENTLY. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH COST OF REPAIRS THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN SEEN BY A DEALER. *AK

THE VEHICLE FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH. THE BRAKES JUST COMPLETELY FAILED. THIS HAPPENED ON 9-17-05. THE DEALER SAID THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. DEPRESSED CLUTCH PEDAL AND RELEASED IT. THE PEDAL ROSE AN ADDITIONAL 4 INCHES MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO USE THE CLUTCH. I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND I HAD BEEN LUCKY THAT IT HAD NOT RISEN AN ADDITIONAL .25 INCH BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE HAD NO CLUTCH. FORD KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE MASTER CYLINDER AND HAD AN UPGRADE KIT AVAILABLE WHICH I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT. I ASSUME THE SAME MASTER CYLINDER IS USED IN THE BRAKES.

2000 FORD SUPERDUTY BUILT AT KENTUCKY TRUCK PLANT EXHIBITS EXCESSIVE SHAKING DURING BRAKING SINCE @ 3,000 MILES. REPLACED FRONT DISCS/CALIPERS 5 TIMES BY 100,000 MILES EVEN THOUGH TRUCK IS DRIVEN VERY LIGHTLY (NO TOWING, MOUNTAINS ETC. JUST NORMAL HIGHWAY AND TOWN DRIVING) FORD DEALERS (THREE CONSULTED SO FAR) SAY THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND THAT POST-2000 MY VEHICLES RECEIVE IMPROVEMENTS. WE HAVE PUT THE BEST POSSIBLE MATERIALS/PARTS THAT WE CAN IDENTIFY TO MINIMIZE PROBLEM. WE BELIEVE THAT REPLACEMENT PARTS REPRESENT POST-2000MY IMPROVEMENTS. BRAKES CONTINUE TO WEAR RAPIDLY, WARP AND CAUSE SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION DURING EVEN VERY MODERATE BRAKING. WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH LEFT FRONT WHEEL LOCKED UP, CAUSING THE FRONT AXLE TO BREAK. ALSO, THERE WAS A BROKEN ROTOR AND A DESTROYED ANTI LOCK BRAKE SENSOR. CURRENTLY, THE RIGHT WHEEL BEARING MALFUNCTIONED. *AK

AGAIN GOING ONLINE I FOUND MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. ALL WITH THE FORD F250, 350 MODEL YEAR 1999 - 2003. PRESENTLY I HAVE HAD MY FRONT ROTORS EITHER CUT OR REPLACED 4 TIMES. ESTIMATED TIME LINE THAT WORK WAS REQUIRED.; 30000, 44000, 60000 AND THE CHIMMY IS BACK AT 76000 . THIS PROBLEM CAUSES THE TRUCK TO SHAKE AND CHIMMY. DROVE TO NEARBY REPAIR CENTER FOR REPAIR. DURING REPAIR IT WAS ALSO DISCOVERED THAT LEFT FRONT CALIPER WAS ALSO STICKING.

BRAKE ROTORS WARP ALL THE TIME, CAUSING SEVERE VIBRATION WHILE BRAKING. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FIXED 5 TIMES. FIRST THE ROTORS WERE TURNED, THEN REPLACED, THEN TURNED ETC, ETC. I'M DUE TO GO IN AGAIN FOR THE 6TH FIX, WITH ONLY 5,000 MILES ON THE NEWEST SET OF ROTORS. I ONLY HAVE 52,000 ON THE TRUCK. SO FAR THE DEALER HAS STOOD BEHIND THE FIXES BUT THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AS WELL AS A FINANCIAL CONCERN SINCE THEY WILL START TO MAKE ME PAY. I'VE BEEN A HIGHWAY PATROLMAN FOR 18 YEARS. FORD REFUSED INITIALLY TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS, SO I WAS TAKING VEHICLE TO LOCAL TIRE/BRAKE SHOP. SCHAWB TIRE 1201 HILLTOP DR REDDING CA.96003...PH. 530 221-5314.... FINALLY TOOK PICKUP TO DEALER, FOUND FRONT HUB FAILURE, WORN OUT BALL JOINTS, WARPED ROTORS. COVERED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY. HOWEVER....7,000 MILES LATER, PROBLEM IS BACK!. AT TIME OF SERVICE BY CORNING FORD, I ASKED SERVICE MANAGER, STEVE LOWERY, WHAT WAS TO PREVENT THE BRAKES FROM FAILING AGAIN IN THIS MANNER. HE SAID... NOTHING! SURE ENOUGH, HE WAS RIGHT! THIS STARTED IN 2001, ON THE WAY HOME FROM ALASKA..IN THE YUKON. TOOK IT TO SHOP AS SOON AS I GOT HOME. MY EXTENDED CNA SERVICE WARRANTY TERMINATES AT 100,000 MILES. SINCE I KEEP MY VEHICLES FOR 200,000 TO 300,000 MILES, I'M VERY CONCERNED AS TO THE POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEMS THAT THIS FAILURE COULD CAUSE, AND THE MONEY OUT OF MY POCKET TO KEEP THIS VEHICLE IN SAFE OPERATING CONDITION.
