Starting to exhibit signs of the death wobble at 46000 miles
In the last few weeks two of the trucks tire pressure indicators have failed on the right side of the vehicle
Front end wobbles, shakes and shimmies at speeds over 50mph.
Purchased the truck new from factory. Now I find after 5!years the lug nuts are defective and I can not even rotate my tires. Should be a ford defective issue. Swelling was not brought to my attention when purchased Victor bohannon 509 654 8278 I expect a call back.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned: Steering Dampner failed causing other issued in steering and front-end suspension failures. You can inspect anytime you want. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Repetitive failure on these components put me and family at risk and other drivers to the loss of control Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes problem has been reoccurring from 16k mile to present just under 100K miles. Truck has been in the shop multiple times for the same repetitive failure. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, ford has inspected it, independent shops have inspected it, the BBB has inspected it. Ford has told me on more than one occasion to go after market. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, on symptoms; loose steering and uneven wear patterns on the tires, then complete failure of multiple components.
DEATH WOBBLE
I experienced the “Death Wobble” for my first time today! Very scary! I had just reached 65 MPH and suddenly my 2017 F250 starting shaking violently. I had little to no control of steering. Fortunately, I had heard of it before from family and friends who also experienced it. I let off the accelerator and it ended as if nothing was wrong! My vehicle has slightly over 38K miles. There was no warning or messages. I am not aware of any road issues. I have talked with my Ford service department and they are ordered a damper kit. My vehicle is available for inspection.
Front wheels shake violently causing driver to have to brake hard and slow vehicle to regain control. Problem happens when vehicle is traveling at a speed of 50-60 mph and hits a rough spot on highway. Problem happens frequently and on several occasions has caused vehicle behind me to brake hard to avoid a rear end collision. The truck is not safe to drive.
Death Wobble on numerous occasions. I first took it to Ford and put some "dampener" on it to fix it. I noticed that the truck still vibrated, but did not go into the death wobble immediately.4-5 months later, a worse death wobble started. It always happens when you hit a bridge abutment paving transition. The violent shaking does not stop until you slow way down. I have had to leave the road twice due to 18 wheelers behind me. It is so bad now, vehicles around me can see the violent shaking and move over and get away from me. This is an extremely dangerous event. If a younger driver freaks out and lets go of the steering wheel, deaths will be inevitable.
WHENEVER DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 50-70 MPH, EVERY TIME I HIT A BUMP OR HOLE IN THE ROAD, MY TRUCK BEGINS TO WOBBLE, NEARLY UNCONTROLLABLY. AT SLOWER SPEEDS, I CAN STILL FEEL THE WOBBLE. IT ONLY DOES NOT WOBBLE WHEN I HIT BUMPS GOING 15 MPH OR LESS.

I WAS TRAVELING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT AROUND 70 MPH WHEN I HIT A SMALL BUMP. THAT BUMP CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL AND FRONT END SUSPENSION GO INTO WHAT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS A "DEATH WOBBLE." IT SHOOK UNCONTROLLABLY AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN TO AROUND 25 MPH. DURING THAT TIME THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK AND I DID NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF TURNING TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING THAT COULD CAUSE SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS. IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE THEN. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT MUST BE CORRECTED AND FORD MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE.

ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS THE VEHICLE HAS GONE INTO AN UNCONTROLLABLE FRONT END WOBBLE UPON HITTING ROUGH PAVEMENT ON THE INTERSTATE AT SPEEDS OF 70-75 MPH. THE WOBBLE CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY FOR APPROXIMATELY 3-6 SECONDS AND CAN ONLY BE STOPPED BY GRADUALLY REDUCING SPEED. STEERING IS NOT FUNCTIONAL DURING THE WOBBLE. THE FIRST TWO TIMES (OCTOBER 2019) THE VEHICLE WAS TOWING A TRAILER. THE LAST TWO TIMES (DECEMBER 2020) THE VEHICLE HAD ONLY TWO PASSENGERS IN THE CAB AND A FEW PIECES OF LUGGAGE IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK. IN MAY 2020 FORD INSTALLED A STEERING LINKAGE DAMPER TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THAT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, AND FOLLOWING THE DECEMBER 2020 INCIDENTS, SUBSTANTIAL FRONT-END REPAIRS WERE REQUIRED. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 36K MILES ON IT.

I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY ABOUT 75 MILES AND I HIT A BUMP AND I ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF MY TRUCK WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHAKING AND I HAD TO HOLD ON TO KEEP IT FROM GOING TO THE OTHER LANE TO AVOID HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. PURCHASED THE VEHICLE 2/03/17. ON 12/01/17 WIFE AND 7 YR. OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE 2017 F250 VEHICLE ON I205 NORTHBOUND ON GLEN JACKSON BRIDGE IN OREGON. SHE RAN OVER THE EXPANSION JOINT GOING ABOUT 60MPH AND THE THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK STARTED BOUNCING VIOLENTLY. OTHER TRAFFIC MOVED AWAY FROM HER AS SHE WAS LOSING CONTROL OF VEHICLE. SHE WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP SAFELY ON THE SHOULDER. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT GET THE ISSUE TO REOCCUR. THEY SENT IT OUT THE DOOR IN SAME CONDITION. ISSUE REOCCURRED MANY TIMES. FINALLY I WAS ABLE TO RECORD IT ON VIDEO AND ONLY THEN WOULD WESLIE FORD TAKE IT IN AND DO WORK ON IT. SERVICE WRITER [XXX] SAID FORD DID NOT HAVE A REPAIR FOR THIS ISSUE. SHE SAID THEY WOULD PUT SOME SHIMS IN TO HELP. IT DID A BIT. BUT STILL ACTUALLY BOUNCES SO BAD SOMETIMES THAT THE WHEELS LEAVE THE ROAD AND YOU LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING.. CALLED SERVICE MANAGER [XXX] AT DEALER AND TOLD HIM WE ARE LUCKY THAT MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER DIDNT GET IN A ACCIDENT, HURT, OR KILLED BECAUSE OF THE TRUCK MALFUNCTION. HE SAID "UNFORTUNATELY SOMETIMES THATS WHAT IT TAKES TO GET SOMETHING DONE". REALLY? I WAS SHOCKED! PLEASE FOLLOW UP WITH THIS AND ENSURE THAT WESLIE FORD, SERVICE WRITERS AND OTHERS ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. PEOPLES LIVES ARE IN DANGER AND AT RISK. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON LINE REGARDING THE PROBLEM (I AM NOT A CERTIFIED MECHANIC) BUT A COMMON PROBLEM THAT WAS VERIFIED BY MORE THAN 5 CERTIFIED MECHANICS WAS THE DEGREE OF CASTER IN THE AXLE. AN ISSUE FROM WHAT THEY BELIEVE ORIGINATED AT THE MANUFACTURER. I CANNOT UNDERSTATE THE SAFETY CONCERN THAT I HAVE DRIVING MY F250 THAT I LIMIT THE DRIVING I DO IN THIS VEHICLE. VERY DISAPPOINTING AND FRUSTRATING WHEN FORD DOES NOT RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM OR TRY TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH A RECALL. MY HOPE IS THAT THE NHTSA CAN INTERVENE AND PREVENT SOMEONE FROM BECOMING FATALLY INJURED DUE TO THIS PROBLEM.

OVER THE PAST 5 MONTHS (IT IS NOW 1/30/2020) THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED, TYPICALLY HIGHWAY SPEEDS, RANGING ANYWHERE FROM 50-80 MPH. ALTHOUGH, IT HAS HAPPENED AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 40-45. IT HAPPENS OUT OF NOWHERE WITH NO APPARENT PROVOCATION, I.E., HITTING A POTHOLE, TURNING, HITTING THE BRAKES, ETC. IT USUALLY HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE AND NOTHING SEEMS TO MAKE IT STOP. I'VE TRIED HITTING THE BRAKES, SLAMMING THE BRAKES, CONTINUING TO HOLD MY SPEED STEADY, ACCELERATING SLIGHTLY, AND PRAYING TO GOD TO MAKE IT STOP. NOTHING WORKS, IT JUST EVENTUALLY STOPS BUT NOT BEFORE TRAFFIC CLEARS ALL AROUND ME. IT IS NOTICEABLE FROM OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AS I HAVE SEEN DRIVERS HIT THE BRAKES AND FALL BACK IN TRAFFIC AROUND ME. THE VIOLENT SHAKING MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE STEADY OR IN MY LANE OF TRAFFIC. THE VIOLENT SHAKING MAKES THE VEHICLE BOUNCE ALL OVER THE ROAD. IT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD THE STEERING WHEEL STEADY OR STRAIGHT. IT IS TERRIFYING AND UNNERVING. I BELIEVE IT IS GOING TO KILL ME OR SOMEONE ELSE. I HAUL TRAILERS WITH HEAVY EQUIPMENT ALMOST DAILY. MANY TIMES I AM ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON CITY STREETS. IF IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN, THE DAMAGE WILL BE COSTLY AND MAY KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE, INCLUDING MYSELF. I PERSONALLY HAVE 2 FRIENDS WHO OWN 2018 & 2019 F-250 AND BOTH HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME "DEATH WOBBLE". DEALER STATES THE NEEDED PART TO REPAIR PROBLEM IS ON BACKORDER. ALSO STATED CURRENTLY THERE ARE 43K OF THESE COMPONENTS ON B/O. THESE NUMBERS MAKE IT EXTREMELY APPARENT FORD HAS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH POTENTIALLY THOUSANDS OF UNSAFE VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. THE DEFECT USUALLY BEGINS AT 15K TO 25K MILES. AS THESE TRUCKS REACH THAT THRESHOLD IT WILL ONLY BE A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SEVERELY INJURED. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT FORD ISSUE A NATIONAL RECALL ON THESE MODEL TRUCKS.

THE SEATS AND STEERING WHEEL WERE SHAKING. IT WAS TERRIFYING. I SLOWED TO 55 AND IT STOPPED. IT DID IT TO ME TWICE YESTERDAY WITH SOPHIE IN THE CAR. I GOOGLED 2017 F250 SHAKING. IT'S A DEATH WOBBLE. AND LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE ISSUE.

WITH ONLY 15,000 MILES, MY FORD F250 4X4 SUPER DUTY TRUCK (ALL STOCK) WOULD WOBBLE VIOLENTLY WHEN HITTING A BUMP OR DIP ON THE ROAD, TYPICALLY AT SPEEDS OVER 45MPH. I BROUGHT THE TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE AS THIS OCCURS FREQUENTLY. FORD REPLACED SEVERAL STEERING PARTS AND ADMITTED TO WHAT THEY CALL A "DEATH WOBBLE". WHAT SCARES ME THE MOST IS THAT THE WOBBLE WAS SO BAD, IT FORCED ME INTO THE MEDIAL OF THE INTERSTATE AND NEARLY CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. MY FEARS ARE MORE TOWARD THAT IF I HAD MY 17 YEAR OLD DRIVING THE TRUCK, MUCH WORSE COULD HAVE HAPPENED AS IT TOOK ALL I HAD TO MANEUVER THE TRUCK OFF THE HIGHWAY AND DOWN TO A SAFE SPEED TO BRING THE TRUCK BACK UNDER CONTROL. THE WOBBLE OR SHIMMY WAS SO EXTREME THAT I FELT IT NEEDED REPORTED. WHEN I ASKED IF THE PARTS REPLACEMENT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM INDEFINITELY, THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME A GOOD ANSWER. SO MY FEARS AGAIN ARE "WHAT IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN AND WHAT IF MY TEENAGER IS DRIVING". I DON'T FEEL THIS PROBLEM IS RESOLVED AND NEEDS FURTHER INVESTIGATION BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY HURT, OR WORSE.

AT APPROXIMATELY 65 TO 70 MPH AND UPON HITTING A BUMP/EXPANSION JOINT/POTHOLE IN THE ROAD, THE TRUCK WILL ENTER INTO A NON-DAMPENING CASTOR OSCILLATION (I.E. DEATH WOBBLE). WHEN THIS OCCURS IT CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL AND THE DRIVER MUST SLOW DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 40 - 45 MPH TO GET THE WOBBLE TO STOP. THIS CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN TOWING A LARGE/HEAVY TRAILER.

I HAVE A 2017 FORD F250 THAT HAS "DEATH WOBBLE" ISSUES. IT BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLE IF IT HITS ROUGH PAVEMENT ON THE HIGHWAY, USUALLY AT 70 MPH. IF THE TRUCK BEGINS TO SHAKE IT IS UNCONTROLLABLE. IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL IS TO SLOW TO ABOUT 20 MPH OR STOP COMPLETELY. WHILE DECELERATING IT WILL GET WORSE THAT AT 70 MPH FOR A SHORT TIME, AND THEN SLOWLY STOP SHAKING. I HAVE BEEN TO THE HELLER FORD DEALERSHIP IN EL PASO, THEY REPLACED A STEERING STABILIZER. THE TRUCK NOW HAS A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END, AND FEELS LIKE IT IS GOING TO START THE DEATH WOBBLE AGAIN. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID IT WAS BECAUSE OF WORN TIRES. THEY HAVE 9/32" OF TREAD ON THE FRONT. THEY ARE HOWEVER DAMAGED FROM THE WOBBLE, FORD WILL NOT REPLACE THE TIRES. THE TEARS HAVE ABOUT 7/32" AND ARE NOT "CUPPED" LIKE THE FRONT. THE TRUCK DOES THIS WHILE IN MOTION ON ALL TYPES OF PAVEMENT USUALLY 55-70MPH

DEATH WOBBLE.. WHEN DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 65 TO 70 ON HIGHWAY IF YOU HIT ANY KIND OF BRIDGE OR BUMP IN ROAD THE VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY LIKE A WHEEL HAS FALLEN OFF.. YOU HAVE TO COME DOWN TO 20MPH OR STOP TO REGAIN CONTROL.. I HAVE ONLY 19000 MILES ON MY TRUCK AND THIS HAS HAPPENED 4 TIMES NOW.. THIS IS GOING TO KILL SOME ONE NEEDS FIXED.. HAVE HAD IT TO DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES ON MY WAY FOR 4 TH TODAY . I BOUGHT A NEW TRUCK TO FEEL SAFE AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT NOW.

FRONT TIRES BEGIN TO "WOBBLE & SHAKE" VIOLENTLY OF SPEEDS ABOVE 60 MPH.

I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER AFTER I NOTICED THE TPMS WAS MALFUNCTIONING AFTER ABOUT 4,000 MILES AND 3 MONTHS OF OPERATION. THE TPMS ORIGINALLY SHOWED A DRAMATIC FAULT IN ONE TIRE, BUT LATER SHOWED FAULTS IN THREE. THE READINGS CHANGED CONTINUALLY FROM TIRE TO TIRE AND SOMETIMES WERE AS LOW AS 40 PSI IN SOME TIRES. THE DEALER REPLACED 1 SENSOR BUT COULD NOT GET THE TPMS TO CALIBRATE. I RETURNED THE NEXT DAY AFTER THE DEALER OBTAINED TWO MORE NEW SENSORS. AFTER THE TWO NEW SENSORS WERE INSTALLED IN TRUCK WHEELS, THE TPMS STILL WOULD NOT CALIBRATE. THE DEALER INSTALLED A NEW SENSOR IN THE REMAINING WHEEL AND WAS THEN ABLE TO CALIBRATE THE TPMS. THE DEALER BELIEVES THAT ALL FOUR SENSORS FAILED AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4000 MILES AND THREE MONTHS. THE DEALER SAID THAT ALL FOUR TIRES HAD "MOISTURE" INSIDE WHEN THEY INSTALLED NEW SENSORS AND ASKED ME IF I HAD USED A PERSONAL AIR COMPRESSOR TO ADD AIR PRIOR TO THE FAILURES. I RESPONDED THAT I HAD NOT DONE ANYTHING TO THE AIR PRESSURE BEFORE THE FIRST FAILURE AND ONLY CHECKED ALL FOUR TIRES FOR AIR PRESSURE AFTER THE SYSTEM SHOWED A PROBLEM. WHEN CHECKING ALL FOUR TIRES AFTER THE FAILURE I MAY HAVE ADDED A POUND OR TWO TO EACH TO BRING ALL UP TO THE RECOMMENDED PRESSURE. I HAVE SINCE CHECKED MY COMPRESSOR AND IT DID NOT EXPEL ANY WATER AFTER DRAINING. I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED THE FINAL SERVICE REPORT FROM THE DEALER, AS AFTER 4 HOURS OF WAITING FOR RESOLUTION, I WAS IN A HURRY TO GET HOME. OBVIOUSLY, ALL IS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.
